Project 3000 (Phase V): Pocket Assaults
« on: May 26, 2020, 11:24:46 AM »

One significant weakness of the Taurian Concordat industry is their lack of any Assault-weight BattleMech in production.  Without access to the firepower and heavy armor carried by most Assault 'Mechs, the TDF would (on occasion) find itself unable to match hostile forces.

Project 3000 (Phase V) was intended to correct that perceived deficiency.  However, design a new Assault-weight BattleMech (from the drawing board) was somewhat outside the wheelhouse of all three of the Concordat's major arms manufacturers.  And while they could obtain guidance from the Free Worlds League and Lyran Commonwealth, Protector Calderon did not want the Concordat to become indebted to foreign powers.

The breakthrough idea behind the three 'Mechs that would comprise Phase V originated in a study by TTI of several variants of the Stalker.  One of the most interesting variants reduced the onboard weapon systems to lower the overall mass of the 'Mech to 75-tons . . . a heavy-weight design more than capable of being produced by existing Taurian factories.

Dubbing his idea as a "Pocket Assault", the lead design engineer at TTI proposed a series of three 70-ton BattleMechs using a smaller (GM 210) fusion engine while retaining the same chassis, electronics, and armor protection as the previous Phase IV Heavy-weight designs.  But the three 'Mechs of Phase V would each have some thirty-five tons of space for weapons and equipment.

Intrigued by the proposal, Protector Calderon approved a limited production run of each 'Mech for field trials and testing.  The 'Mechs selected to Phase V to emulate were the Awesome, the Highlander, and the Stalker, as commanders of the TDF believed these three designs would give the TDF the punch it needed to deal with potential hostile forces.

AST-1A Assailant

Pinard Protectorates Limited made the contribution to Phase V of Project 3000 by modifying four of their Mantis heavy-weight BattleMechs from Phase IV.

Lacking the facilities for a full production run, PPL executives and design engineers took four stock 'Mechs from the production line and removed the engine and jumpjets.  A smaller, lighter GM 210 Fusion Engine was then installed, providing for a walking speed of 32.4 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 54.0 kph.

All weapons and heat sinks were then removed.  The Assailant, as the new prototype was designated, would be based on the Awesome.  Although PPL realized that their design would not be as robust and able to absorb damage as that 80-ton zombie, they believed that they could achieve a very similar product on a 70-ton chassis.

Initial plans to mount three High Energy System Corona PPCs were quickly discarded, as the excess overheat production was simply too high.  Instead, PPL decided to mount two HES Coronas along with a Martin Gordon Lance Large Laser.  Combined with 26 standard heat sinks, this would allow the Assailant to run and gun with an Alpha Strike for minimal excess overheat production (+4).  By holding fire from the Lance every other firing cycle, the Assailant would be heat-balanced in the long term.

Only four prototypes were modified and these were assigned to the elite 1st Battalion of the Taurian Guards for field testing.  So far, reviews from the field have been positive as the design is hard-hitting and very durable on the battlefield.  However, some detractors cannot help but point out that this 70-ton pocket assault cannot fully duplicate what the Awesome has to offer.

But since the Taurian Concordat does not produce the Awesome, PPL points out that the Assailant is quite close enough to filling the same niche.

So far (in 3039), the TDF has made no public decision about whether or not to try to place the Assailant in general production, either by converting an existing production line or by attempting to expand production capability.

NVA-1A Nova

Vandenberg Mechanized Industries attempted a different take on the Phase V Pocket Assault 'Mech.  Modifying their Dragoon (produced on New Vandenberg), they added three Hamilton LiftJet 90 jump-jets, while downgrading the engine to a GM 210 Fusion Engine.  Thirteen standard heat sinks were also fitted to the design.

Using the 90-ton Highlander as inspiration, VMI attempted to use weaponry still in production than the cutting edge Star League tech that made the Highlander so feared.

The original LRM-20 was downgraded to an LRM-15 (with two tons of ammunition for 16 missile salvos), while the Gauss Rifle was replaced with an AC-10 autocannon (also with two tons of ammunition for 20 bursts of fire).  At range, these weapons allow the Nova to perform a jumping Alpha Strike and still remain quite cool.

In close, the armament mirrors the original Highlander.  An SRM-6 pack (but with just one ton of ammunition for 15 missile salvos) and two Medium Lasers.  Combined with the AC-10, the Nova generates only movement heat when using these four weapon systems.

Although slow moving, the jump jets allow for some tactical flexibility and few other heavy-weight designs have the same damage capacity without also being burdened by excessive overheat production.

As with PPL, VMI converted four Dragoons into Novas for field testing with the 1st Battalion, Taurian Guards.  To date, reports from these soldiers seem to indicate the design is very capable for urban defense, lacking only an anti-personnel weapon to make it ideal.  Rumors abound that the TDF may be planning to authorize VMI to begin full-scale production in or around 3040.

TPT-1A Tempest

The final entry into the Phase V competition is the TPT-1A Tempest fielded by Taurian Territorial Industries.  Using a modified Huntsman chassis, TTI design teams attempted to replicate the 85-ton Stalker on a far lighter 70-ton frame.

The design features eighteen standard heat sinks, which--while not capable of dissipating all of the heat this 'Mech can generate--can allow a MechWarrior to utilize his long-range or short-range brackets without serious excess overheat production.

At long range, the Tempest features a Martin Gordon Lance Large Laser in the center torso supported by four Aurora Missiliers Privet LRM-5 launchers, each fed by a ton of ammunition.  Although this is a reduction in firepower compared to the original Stalker, this weapons arrangement allows for twice the combat endurance in the field, and is perfectly calibrated to be heat neutral even on a run.

In close, four Martin Gordon Rapier Medium Lasers are main weapons, supported by a pair of Aurora Missilier Foxglove SRM-4 launchers (each with a ton of ammunition).  Once again, this weapons arrangement is slight lighter than that of the Stalker, but only generates movement heat as excess overheat production.

When missile stores are running low, a MechWarrior assigned to the Tempest can instead use the large laser and all four medium lasers for minimal overheat production (before movement).

As an added bonus, armor protection was only slightly less than that found on the original Stalker design (although the 'Mech's internal structure is not quite as robust and thus more easily damaged or destroyed; easily being relative, of course).

Along with PPL and VMI, TTI produced four Tempest prototypes for field testing with the 1st Battalion, Taurian Guards.  Reviews of this 'Mech in particular have been extremely optimistic.  While the slow speed of this pocket assault gives some TDF officers pause, the sheer firepower that the design can deliver on the battlefield makes it a valued addition to any unit.  It is all but certain that the TDF will approve the Tempest for full scale production within the next year.

Re: Project 3000 (Phase V): Pocket Assaults
« Reply #5 on: May 27, 2020, 12:43:04 AM »

While only a company (in total) of Phase V prototypes were produced, TDF MechWarriors of the 1st Battalion, Taurian Guards were greatly impressed.  The slower than normal speed (for a heavy-weight design) caused some initial concern, but once it was accepted that these 'Mechs were indeed "Pocket Assaults", that concern slowly vanished.

The firepower that these designs can bring to the TDF makes it highly likely that PPL, TTI, and VMI will receive additional funding from the Protector to construct new production lines to begin limited construction.  At least until the Concordat can design, build, and then mass produce its own "True" Assault-weight BattleMech.  But for now, this compromise between capability and desirability seems well worth the price that the Protector is willing to pay.

And there are many MechWarriors within the TDF (and associated mercenary commands) who would be more than willing to take one of these designs into battle.  Only time will tell if the TDF's "Pocket Assault" concept is able to withstand the test of time or if it is merely a flash-in-the-pan and appropriate only for the combats of today rather than those of tomorrow.

Not bad bud. Thought you'd go to 75 or 80 tons. What's your primary AC/20 deliverer, Mech wise? I ask cause you either have a fast hard hitter or a slow take a pounding but I'll dish out twice as more going on. With such a light force seige assaults and heavy planetary defense might be beyond your capabilities.

The 4/6/0 Aggressor from Phase IV is the only AC-20 'Mech.  I could have done an Atlas-lite, but I figure the Concordat is already pushing their industrial base with just the 'Mechs I've already done.  Plus, the cooling system would be very inadequate (only 14 heat sinks for an AC-20, SRM-6, 3 medium lasers (1 rear mounted), and an LRM-15).

Anyway, hope ya'll like them.

I always considered the Orion the Atlas-lite anyway. So I might bug you for a 75 or even 80 tonner and stop there.
