Mechs of the TDF 3059 Edition
« on: August 20, 2020, 09:20:57 PM »

Jeff

As requested here is the update on  the machine portion of the Men & Machines program.  Just like the training and tactical programs, the material programs have been a huge success.  The new battlemechs being introduced are proving highly effective.  Combat efficiency and performance are up over 33%.  A lot of this is a result of new agreements with the St Ives Compact.  The technological exchange and aid have allowed us to accelerate the upgrading of our factories and the introduction of recovered advanced technologies.  TTI's Hyades Orbital Foundry is already operating at full capacity, they have even been able to supply endo steel alloys to the Magistracy for the new Shadow Hawk and Whitworth models. According to reports I have received the New Vandenberg and Pinard orbital foundries are nearly completion, the should be online by the end of the year.  The upgrades to our component lines are taking a  bit longer to complete.  Magna and Sterope Defense Industries should begin turning out advanced weapons within 6-12 months.  Until that time we have been purchasing what we need from the SIC.

My contacts in the SIC are very pleased with the current arrangements- and you should be also be happy. Even selling them raw materials and mechs at below market rates, we have increased exports by 200%.  TTI and VMI have both reported record profits for the quarter and I expect that PPL and TMM will also report record results when they release the data next week.

Attached to this report you'll find updates on some of the newest mechs entering service with the TDF.  We have not introduced any upgraded aerofighters or tanks yet, once SDI and Magna are operating at full capacity we plan to begin a major upgrade plan for both of those branches.

The STG-7T was originally developed during the early 3050s.  Originally developed as a testbed for new technologies being introduced from both the Helm core and materials reverse engineered from the Star League depot on Celeano, the design was not originally intended for full scale production, but rather to test the new technologies and evaluate their effectiveness.  However, during testing the new design was found to be highly effective as both a raider and, in the words of the chief test pilot, a gnat that will annoy the heck out of the enemy.  However the advanced technology, combined with Protector Thomas Calderon's reluctance to fund anything other then fortifications resulted in the design being shelved.  With the aid of engineers from the St Ives Compact we have been able to put the design into production at both VMI and PPL.

The main gun of the Stinger is the newly introduced Sunglow Type 5 Extended Range Large Laser.  This gives the Stinger a true stinger and makes it a threat to other larger mechs, especially when it can get behind them.  The design also makes use of an XL Fusion and an Endo Steel structure, which free up the mass needed for the heavier weapons array.  The Stinger originally mounted standard heatsinks, but these were soon replaced with new double strength models- during testing, the combination of the Extended Range Laser and jump jets resulted in a number of shutdowns.  The Medium Laser and Machine Guns were removed and replaced with a flamer to the right arm.  The flamer is mounted in the same gun pod that formerly carried the Medium Laser.  It is intended that the Flamer will be used to deal with any infantry threats the mech may encounter as well as being able to be used to create smokescreens, allowing the mech to escape if it is outmatched.

The WTH-3T is a new variant of the Whitworth that is being produced by Vandenberg Mechanized Industries.  VMI acquired a license for the Whitworth in exchange for our providing the Magistracy with Endo Steel alloys from the Hyades Foundry and helping them build their own Endo Steel foundry over Dunianshire.  While similar to the Canopian WTH-3C, VMI engineers made several changes to meet the needs of the TDF.  The original LTV 160 engine has been upgraded to the Warner E, increasing the speed of the mech.  The heavier weight of the engine is offset by the use of an Endo Steel frame.  The design also removes one of the medium lasers, allowing the addition of a 5th jump jet to the mech.

The HCT-5T is an upgraded version of the Concordat's Hatchetman.  While the JCT-4T was well received by the Mechwarriors of the TDF, one of the complaints about the mech was it's slow speed. While this was sufficient for urban combat, it was found to be too slow when the Hatchetman was deployed in open areas.  In many cases, the Hatchetman had difficulty catching up with other mechs so that it could use it's powerful hatchet.  The HCT-5T seeks to solve this problem by replacing the GM 180 engine with the larger Warner 225B.  This increased the speed of the mech by 25%.  The larger engine required several other changes.  The biggest change was the introduction of a new Endo Steel chassis.  This freed up most of the mass needed for the new engine.  The other changes involved removing the center torso medium laser and replacing it with an additional heat sink and the removal of a half ton of armor.  The firepower of the mech is improved by replacing the old Sunglow laser with the new Type 5 Extended Range model, giving the mech a longer range attack.  While there is some concern about having removed some armor, the increased speed more then offsets that reduced armor plating.

This is is largely inspired by your design challenges- but these are designs that don't work for the TC in the 3052 time frame. I have a few more that I need to post.

The GRF-2T is one of 2 new models of Griffin that are entering service with the TDF.  Based on the original GRF-1N, the -2T improves the heat dissipation, armor protection and fire power, of the original with out sacrificing any of the qualities that makes the Griffin so valued.  The key to these improvements is the new Endo Steel chassis. This saves enough mass to make all of the other changes.  The old Donal PPC has been replaced with a Johnston High Speed ER PPC from the Federated Commonwealth.  This weapon is only a stopgap measure until Sterope Defense Industries can begin full scale production of their Donal Super Shot ER PPC.  The mech retains the Delta Dart LRM launcher of the original but improves it by adding an Artemis IV fire control system, increasing the accuracy of the launcher.  For close in defense, an issue with the original Griffin, a Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Laser is mounted in the left torso.

The armor of the new Griffin has been greatly improved.  Carrying 10.5 tons of Durallex Super Medium Ferro-Fibrous Armor, the -2T has approximately 20% greater protection then the original.  To protect against ammunition explosions, the LRM rounds are located in a CASE system.

The final change is to the mech's heat dissipation system.  While carrying 1 less heatsink then the GRF-1N, the use of double strength heatsinks provides adequate cooling for all but the heaviest fighting.

The end result is a mech that is improved in every aspect.  The new Griffin has been receiving rave reviews from the mechwarriors that have been assigned to the mech.

The GRF-3T was designed as an alternative to the GRF-2T. Intended as a close assault unit, the mech shares the same chassis, armor, motive power and cooling systems as it cousin.  The only differences are in the weapons arrangement.  The main gun of the GRF-3T is the Sunglow Type 5 ER Large Laser, which replaces the ER PPC on the -2T.  The Delta Dart LRM has been removed and replaced with 4 Pinard Reaper Streak Racks,  These are all located in same drum housing that has been used for the LRM rack.  The hope is that by keeping the two variants visually similar, opponents will not know which one they are fighting until it is too late.  Rounding out the weapons are a Diverse Optics Type 27P Medium Pulse Laser replacing the Type 18 on the -2T and 2 Magna 200P Small Pulse Lasers not he left arm.  The Magna 200Ps are intended to give the Griffin a limited anti-infantry capability.

The only complaint about the GRF-3T is that it tends to run a bit hotter then the -2T.  While some consideration was give to adding 1-2 heatsinks at the expense of the pulse lasers, this was rejected because it would require major changes to the mech.  Currently the GRF-2T and GRF-3T share over 90% commonality.  The biggest difference between the two mechs are the left forearm armor panel which on the GRF-3T has been modified to mount the 2 Magna 200P Pulse Lasers.  Power for the Small Pulse Lasers is provided through the left arm actuator power feeds, which are sized to handle the energy needs of the Small Pulse Lasers.  Even the missile launchers manage to share a common feed mechanism, the GRF-3T simply disables two of the 10 feed tubes that run to the missile pod.  Adding 1 or 2 additional heatsinks, while sound like a simple modification would require numerous changes to the mech's torso.  This would introduce a number of differences between the two models and reduce the manufacturing efficiency that we gain from having two mechs that share so many common components.

One of the first fruits of the Jeffrey Calderon's rise to the Protectorship was the improvement of relations between the Magistracy of Canopus and the Taurian Concordat, two traditional allies.  In exchange for aid improving the Concordat's medical capabilities, the Concordat sent engineers to the Magistracy to help improve their industrial capabilities, including their weapons industries.  The first efforts were concentrated at Majesty Metals & Manufacturing's Dunianshire plant.  Within months, the factory had begun producing Ferro-Fibrous armor, double heat sinks and Streak Missile Launchers.

With the availability of advanced technologies, the Concordat engineers began helping the MM&M redesign their products and increase the number produced each year.  The Shadow Hawk, the heaviest mech produced by the Canopians, was the first candidate for upgrades.  The initial design, the SHD-5C reworked the Shadow Hawk to improve it's firepower.  The old Armstrong J11 Autocannon and Holly LRM 5, along with 2 heatsinks, were removed and replaced with an Imperator Code Red LB-10X that was imported from the Free Worlds League.  The SRM rack was upgraded to a Streak launcher, while the ammo was protected by a CASE system.  Finally the armor was improved by using Ferro-Fibrous armor to provide more protection for the same weight.

The new Shadow Hawk was considered a huge success and a number were sold the Taurian Concordat. With the completion of TTI's Hyades Orbital Foundry, the Concordat made a new proposal to the Magistracy.  The Concordat would supply MM&M with Endo Steel chassis for the Shadow Hawk, as well as help the Canopians build their own foundry. In exchange the Canopians would help develop a new model of the Shadow Hawk for the Concordat and upon completion of the Canopian Endo Steel foundry license the design to Pinard Protectorates Limited.  The end result was the SHD-6T.

The SHD-6T begins with the SHD-5C and adds an Endo Steel chassis to save weight for other modifications.  The weight savings allows for the addition of a second Streak Launcher in the right torso, another jump jet and a half ton of armor.  The SHD-6T has completed field trials and approximately 25% of all the Shadow Hawks being built by Majesty Metals & Manufacturing are being completed to this configuration for the TDF.
