ARC-3C Archer

While the Magistracy of Canopus does not produce the Archer, Magistracy Mines & Metals has introduced an upgrade to the ARC-2R standard model, with roughly a dozen existing 'Mechs being refitted and overhauled each year.

The Canopians--assisted by the engineers from the Taurian Concordat--have removed the Doombud LRM-20 launchers and using the weight saved, installed a total of 13 double-strength heat sinks. The armor has been replaced with 12.0 tons of Ferro-Fibrous plating providing a slight increase in protection over the ARC-2R. All four Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers were retained (right arm, left arm, and two rear-firing in the center torso).

The main weapons of the design are a pair of Fusigon PPCs (right torso and left torso), supported by two Holly LRM-5 launchers (right torso and left torso, with two tons of ammunition for 24 twin salvos). The thirteen DHS allows the ARC-3C to run and fire the LRMs and PPCs without generating any excess overheat.

Finally, CASE has been installed in both the right and left torsos and fifth Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Laser installed in the head (for a total of five, three of which firing forward).

ARC-3CS Archer

Comstar has restarted production of the Archer at their Skobel Mechworks factory on Terra. Designed to counter Clan war-machines, this version uses a massive Magna 350XL fusion engine to boost speed to be on par with most Clan heavy-weight OmniMechs.

Armor has been increased to 13.5 tons of standard plating, while the internal frame has been replaced with Endo-Steel II. Ten double-strength heat sinks provide more than ample cooling for the standard armament (two Doombud LRM-20 long-range missile launchers and four Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers, two firing to the rear). Artemis IV Fire Control Systems have been added to the Doombuds, while CASE systems in both torsos help to protect the MechWarrior from ammunition explosions.

ARC-3D Archer

House Davion has transformed the Archer from a long-range missile boat into a long-range direct fire support 'Mech. Earthwerks, Incorporated on Tikonov refits more than a score of 'Mechs each year, giving the Federated Suns a powerful supplement to their armed forces.

Ten double-strength heat sinks replace the standard models of the ARC-2R, while both Doombud LRM-20 launchers and their ammunition have been removed. Twelve tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor plating replace the thirteen tons of standard armor previously mounted.

All four Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers have been retained, but the main long-range weapons now consist of a Johnston High Speed ER PPC (right torso) and a Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifle (left torso) fed by three tons of ammunition for 24 shots.

The stability of the Archer chassis proved ideal for the installation of the massive and recoil prone Gauss Rifle . . . and the ARC-3D has quickly become a favored 'Mech of Davion MechWarriors.

ARC-3K Archer

House Kurita has developed its own refit package for the Archer using the massive complex of Luthien Armor Works on Luthien.

As with other upgrades previously shown, the Doombud LRM-20 launchers have been downgraded to Doombud LRM-15 launchers, keeping four tons of ammunition for additional combat endurance. CASE has been installed in both the right and left torsos. Twelve tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor plating replaces the thirteen tons of standard armor seen on the ARC-2R.

A Tanadi Citizen C3 Slave Module has been installed in the head allowing the ARC-3K to coordinate with up to three other 'Mechs in a combat network for improved fire control.

Only a single Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Laser (left arm) has been retained from the original design. In their place, the engineers at LAW installed a Lord's Light PPC in the right arm. While the use of an Extended-Range PPC was considered, engineers were concerned about heat management; indeed, the current weapons layout allows the ARC-3K to run and fire both LRM packs and the PPC without generating any excess overheat.

ARC-3L Archer

Ceres Metals Industries has undertaken a program to refit Archers of House Liao. This design utilizes ten double-strength heat sinks and 11.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous Armor plating. All four Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers have been retained (but the rear-firing center torso lasers moved to the right torso and left torso, one each) and a fifth added to the head, just beneath the cockpit. CASE is fitted to both the right and left torso and a Guardian ECM Suite has been installed in the center torso. The Doombud LRM-20 launchers have been downgraded to Doombud LRM-15 launchers, each with two tons of ammunition.

Finally, four Anderson Propulsion 30/Heavy Jump Jets have been fitted to the design, giving these new Capellan Archers a 120-meter jump capacity. These jump jets are almost identical to those fitted on the Vindicator, but are double the weight (although they consume the same amount of space) to lift 70-tons rather than 45-tons.

Ceres Metals Industries is only able to refit and overhaul about eighteen Archers each year, but the CCAF has contracted with the company for exclusive rights to the refit until 3060.

ARC-3M Archer

House Marik's new ARC-3M Archer is already in full production at the Earthwerks, Incorporated facility on Calloway VI. This model features ten Double Strength Heat Sinks, twelve tons of Ferro-Fibrous Armor, and CASE installations in both the right and left torso.

All four Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers have been retained (one each in the right and left arms, two in the center torso mounted to fire to the rear).

The Doombud LRM-20 launchers and ammunition have been removed, however in order to fit nine Holly LRM-5 launchers and six tons of ammunition. Not only is the total throw-weight of missiles heavier than the ARC-2R, but ammunition endurance has also increased (16 total salvos versus 12 total salvos).

This change reflects a recent doctrine shift in the FWLM with an emphasis on lighter missile launchers using NARC compatible seeker heads. The multiple lighter systems give the MechWarrior more chances to land at least some of his missile payload on target, whereas a smaller number of heavier launchers increases the possibility of missing with the entire salvo.

While other powers have not (yet) begun to follow this doctrine, the FWLM believe it will be effective and has gambled with their current designs to place an emphasis on lighter missile launchers combined with NARC beacons. And, on paper, this doctrine change promises to be extremely effective. Whether or not it proves so in reality remains to be seen.

ARC-3O Archer

The Outworlds Alliance military is so small that it requires multi-purpose BattleMechs, rather than those designed for a specific battlefield role. However, it does possess several ARC-2R Archers. As a result, when recovered technology became available by Mountain Wolf BattleMechs in 3053, a new variant--the ARC-3O--was designed and existing units refitted. Production is limited by the necessity to import Double Strength Heat Sinks from the Lyran Commonwealth, Federated Suns, or Taurian Concordat.

The ARC-3O retains three of the Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers mounted on the ARC-2R (losing one center torso mount that fired to the rear) and downgrades the Doombud LRM-20 launchers to Doombud LRM-15 launchers (all four tons of ammunition have been retained, however). The engineers at Mountain Wolf then added two Harpoon-6 SRM-6 launchers (one each in the right and left torso) along with two tons of ammunition. Lacking space as well as the equipment to refit the base chassis with CASE, Mountain Wolf decided to simply leave the torso ammunition storage magazines intact.

Despite this lack, the ARC-3O is a capable design easily able to engage foes in both long and short range engagements.

ARC-3R Archer

The ARC-3R Archer was produced by Gorton, Thorpe, and Kingsley Enterprises, but both their plants have now fallen into the hands of the Clans. The factory on Satalice was captured intact by Clan Wolf and now the ARC-3R is being produced as a third-line/Garrison BattleMech for their gendarme and solahma troops. However, GTK is working to restart production on Tok Do, although the vulnerability of that system calls into question whether or not the ARC-3R will survive should the Clan Invasion ever resume.

Much of the recovered technology on the ARC-3R comes from ComStar who aided GTK Enterprises in the design and construction of the ARC-3R. Using an Endo-Steel internal structure, CASE in both torsos, and ten Double Strength Heat Sinks, GTK engineers were able to down grade the Doombud LRM-20 launchers to Doombud LRM-15 launchers . . . but added Artemis IV Fire Control Systems. The arm mounted Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers were retained (and a third added to the head), but the rear-firing center torso mounts were removed. In their place, GTK installed a Diverse Optics Type 30 Large Laser. With the remaining tonnage, two additional tons of LRM ammunition were installed and an additional half-ton of armor added (for 13.5 tons of standard armor).

ARC-3S Archer

Designed by Defiance Industries of Hesperus II, the ARC-3S Archer is the definitive House Steiner variant of this venerable BattleMech.

Like the Rasalhague version, Defiance used Endo-Steel II Internal Structure, while increasing the standard armor to 13.5 tons. The standard heat sinks were then converted into double strength models. With the remaining three tons available, the engineers added CASE to both torsos and Artemis IV Fire Control Systems to the Doombud LRM-20 launchers. All other weapons and equipment remains the same as the ARC-2R Archer.

However, Defiance engineers have noted that the ARC-3S platform is perfect for testing the proposed (but not yet designed nor tested) Light Fusion Engine that has been theorized by scientists from the LAF Research & Development departments. Should this intermediate weight, less vulnerable engine ever reach development or production stages, then it is possible to see further upgrades to this chassis.

ARC-3W Archer

Produced exclusively for Wolf's Dragoons by Bowie Industries on Alarion, the ARC-3W Archer is very similar to some of the other designs see above. Ten Double Strength Heat Sinks are installed, along with twelve tons of Ferro-Fibrous Armor. CASE is fitted to both the right and left torsos as well.

All four Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers are retained, but the sole rear-firing weapon has been moved from the center torso to the left torso and the remaining laser is fitted to the head, firing forward. Both Doombud LRM-20 launchers have been downgraded to Doombud LRM-15 launchers, but each has been fitted with Artemis IV Fire Control Systems.

Finally, two Coventry T4H Streak SRM-2 launchers have been fitted to the center torso, fed by a single ton of ammunition stored in the right torso.

Very few examples of the ARC-3W exist outside of Wolf's Dragoons, but there are a few, most of which have been gifted to talented mercenaries by Jamie Wolf himself in recognition of an impressive victory . . . or, in some cases, a defeat suffered with honor.
