Our thirteenth optimization looks at one of my personal favorites which I have often tried to improve but have yet to really figure out. The Assassin is a fast moving, highly mobile medium BattleMech that has light hitting power and not much armor. It could be a Scout or Harasser but if this is an Assassin shouldn’t it have some really killing ability especially if you wanted to create a backstabber? I guess we will see what role you think this 3025-era classic should have in a post Clan invasion universe with the best lostech available and I for one will be happy to see that!

Optimal Design Thoughts on the Assassin
Role. Once thought of as a replacement for the light Wasp and Stinger by the SLDF the Assassin has proven to be an excellent Light ‘Mech hunter and reconnaissance unit over its service life.
Factories. 0 [1]
[DESTROYED] Maltex Corporation (Errai)
Production of the Assassin began in 2676 during the height of the Star League and lasted for one hundred and fifty-nine years. Fluff indicates that there were two factories producing several hundred Assassins until quality control violations slowed that pace. Not only could the design have served the SLDF and the Marik Militia but it could have also been deployed by the Amaris Empire after its takeover of the Hegemony. Following its collapse, the Draconis Combine held the factory right up till its destruction in the early Second Succession War in 2835.
Internal Structure. The Maltex 40 chassis is one of the few components not to have problems on the Assassin thanks to shoddy workmanship and cutting corners. With the destruction of the Errai factory more than two hundred years ago no new Assassins have been produced since meaning that most everything is a refit or refurbed. Unlike other ‘Mechs which have seen their primary factories obliterated there are some intriguing possibilities here. The Maltex 40 internal structure is interestingly enough the same chassis, at least name wise, on the new Battle Hawk. Additionally, Defiance which builds the Battle Hawk also builds a Lyran Assassin during the FedCom Civil War. While there is a ten-ton difference in these designs so I doubt there is a direct correlation it is a possible connection which could go beyond branding which could open options for a new Assassin chassis here. EndoSteel maybe tough to pull off here though as it would require some new manufacturing center but because of Maltex’s ‘design house’ setup there are possibilities.
Engine. The VOX 280 Fusion Power Plant is the quite capable heart of the Assassin allowing it to move at nearly 120 kph. Unfortunately, it takes up a lot of weight (sixteen tons to be exact) which accounts for forty percent of the design’s overall mass. Thankfully there are plenty of 280 Extra-Light (XL) Engines available at this point already with more on the way. This maybe the best and most feasible way of updating the Assassin at this time.
Jump Jets. Able to jump up to two hundred and ten meters at a time thanks to Seven Lox Lift Series 1 Jump Jets the Assassin is a highly mobile design. This mobility is a definite advantage for it on the battlefield and helps give it character. While some variants remove some of these devices, I really can’t see this BattleMech without some type of jump maneuverability. I will not require them for this contest but designers should probably retain jump jets in one form or another.
Heat Sinks. As a light hitter the Assassin never really needed anything more than ten Single Heat Sinks especially if it doesn’t jump. However, if we really want to upgrade its capabilities Double Heat Sinks are likely a good addition. Thanks to the large 280 Engine as many as eleven of these ‘freezers’ can be mounted without the use of any internal space on the BattleMech.
Cockpit & Gyro. Usually there is nothing to see here and in regards to the three-ton gyroscope which helps balance the massive 280 rated engine there isn’t. All is well until you try and cram your self into what may be the BattleTech universe worse control center EVER!! Noted for its cramped conditions and Mechwarriors with a history of back issues this area could use some definite improvement. I talk about the negative quirks assigned to this design (Poor Life Support and Cramped Cockpit) later on but if anyone can try to get rid of this horrifically designed piece of junk. Priority upgrade needed badly!!
Armor. Certainly not well armored with four and half tons of 100 AFVTA armor plating providing a 72-armor factor which is a little over fifty percent maximum possible coverage. With a maximum armor factor of 137 being possible for 40-ton BattleMech I for one would like to see an increase. 8.5 tons of standard armor would give you a 136 near maximum armor factor while just 7.5 tons of ferro-fibrous would give you a 134 near maximum armor factor.
Weapons & Equipment. With only a right arm mounted Medium Laser and side torso two side torso missile racks (LRM-5 and SRM-2 each with one ton of ammunition) the Assassin is a light hitting Medium Mech capable of 14 points of damage. With the range limitations of the LRM and the ammo load problems of the SRM this arsenal is further handicapped. Personally, I want to see more even if only a limited refit is proposed. Much better can and certainly should be done.
Design Criteria
Design: Assassin Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 40 tons
Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!
Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle

Design Traits of this Setting
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy.
Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.
Deployment
It seems that the Assassin can be found in the service of every Great House however it is important to note its use is declining. Mechwarrior 2nd Edition RAT (page 20) which is set circa 3052 has only the Federated Commonwealth (which has each half with a 8.3% chance of having the Assassin occupy a Medium ‘Mech spot in their units) and the Free Rasalhague Republic (5.56% chance of a random Medium) fielding this BattleMech at this time. Kurita, Marik, and Liao all seem to have phased it out of front-line service but I am positive they remain. Marik was at one time among the most noted user of the Assassin along with the SLDF and there are noted examples of Kurita Mechwarriors using this Mech. Liao is always desperate for Mechs and in canon future seems to have deployed them in a specific role. The ComGuards also deployed the ASN-21 and ASN-23 on Tukayyid against the Clans and it seems to be this Mech would be a natural mercenary choice. The Taurians and Canopians also have use for the Assassin so oppurtunities abound for your faction choice here.
Quirky Design
It appears that the Assassin is an extremely quirky design featuring no less than five design oddities. On the good side it seems Easy to Maintain which makes it simple to keep in the field and repair when necessary. Although I don’t understand how with Non-Standard Parts which are pretty tough to come by especially since the factory went boom! Then there are two cockpit negatives (Poor Life Support and Cramped Cockpit) which makes the Mechwarriors life even more difficult. Not to mention the Ammunition Feed Problem which the SRM-2 seems to have in earlier models which are still plugging along. Certainly, makes this interesting and adds flavor but I wouldn’t mind if you guys addressed these in your refit or remodel.
The Maltex Connection
While I wouldn’t call Maltex the next Quicksell company in the BattleTech universe things are definitely a little shady here. They cut corners on the Assassin in particular during the height of the Star League and didn’t fix the SRM bug until the Succession Wars were underway. Not a good track record here when it comes to quality which could be attributed to corruption. However, the depravity of the Succession Wars clearly made them a bit better perhaps out of sheer desperation. They fixed the SRM problem only to get their factory on Errai blown up two decades later. This increased the licensing of their designs far and wide so that several different manufacturers across the InnerSphere were making Maltex products. Then they get involved with the Hatamoto-Chi maybe but one thing is clear, this corporation is shady.
Future Production
Errai – Rebuilding Maltex’s facilities on Errai is quite possible in my opinion earlier than canon. The same plant was expanded presumably from an AgroMech plant upgraded following the 4th Succession War by the Draconis Combine to produce the first Hatamoto-Chis. (Dark Age: Republic Worlds 3130). ComStar provided Maltex with investment capital to reconstruct their Errai factory for production of the Wyvern and Thug following the formation of the Second Star League (TRO 3050 Upgrades) with both reaching manufacturing by 3064. In my setting you have two events which may significantly accelerate things but how this relates to the Assassin I leave to you. One, is the Martial Accords which I outlined here earlier (link below) which establish a formal anti-Clan alliance whose short-term goal is replacing the lost manufacturing of the Free Worlds League. The opening of Terra by ComStar and the formation of the Ceti March by the Federated Commonwealth attack that problem directly by attempting to restart the old industrial centers of the Terran Hegemony and yes, the Draconis Combine is onboard. Industries on Errai could be jump started by all three factions committed to defeating the Clans with Maltex and the Assassin all benefitting.
Defiance – Either on Furillo (Objectives: Lyran Alliance) or Hesperus there is a definite possibility that the Federated Commonwealth may authorize production of the Assassin to help defeat the Clans. There are links between Maltex and Defiance (canon licensing deals not to mention the Battle Hawk connection) which shows that such things are very possible.
Sian – Hellespont ‘Mech Works eventually (TRO 3050 Upgrades) produces the Assassin for the Capellan Confederation and its Periphery allies in canon. With licensing deals perhaps already in place or in the near future I could certainly see House Liao which in this setting is struggling to help Isis take over the Free Worlds League could authorize new construction of this ‘Mech to fill its needs. Plus, there is the Canopian angle which is starting to come together as early allies of this effort to see Isis on the throne.
Keystone – Earthwerks Incorporated already has a deal in place with the Maltex Corporation to produce the Thug and with the Civil War on more production may just be needed like the Assassin. I for one have an idea in mind to turn this light hitting Mech into a real killer for House Marik that promises to eliminate key dissenters on the battlefield. I could see other Provincial factions turning to the Assassin as well for necessary support during the war.
Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday March 13th, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

So begins the Blazer series lol love it. Got mine on my work computer but think I remember them enough to recreate after I go grocery shopping
I am a man of my word. I will make a blazer for just about every Mech out there from here on out.

Nice Abele, I was thinking about a Blazer version myself. ;)
Keep those designs coming folks!!

The Assassin IIC is the result of Clan Nova Cat's interest in providing their touman with replacement 'Mechs after the losses on Tukkayid. While long term work has begun on a new heavy OmniMech inspired by the Jade Falcon's Night Gyr, the Khans knew that they could not wait half a decade for the design to be finalised. In response, scientists took the Consolidated reactor being prepared for the future Nova Cat and modified it to fit into a smaller 'Mech, basing the design on the common SLDF recon 'Mech.
The recon role is no longer relevant, but the Assassin was also known for use as a light 'Mech hunter, ideal for Nova Cat units hunting down DCMS troops that have gone to ground in their occupation zone and still causing problems as guerrilla fighters. Meanwhile the advanced targeting computer raises the possibility of inflicting severe damage to much heavier designs, while using its agility to avoid their fire.
While the supply of Extended Range Medium Lasers was initially problematic, this has been overcome by trading with homeworld clans using resources from the Occupation zone and the Burrocks, Ice Hellions and Goliath Scorpions are all eager to obtain the design if it proves itself in action, so the Nova Cats are preparing to defend the production line vigorously - although hints have been dropped that challenges to obtain design data alone would face a less ferocious defense, a decision that could see the Assassin proliferate among the Clans.

Yeah a couple of major things drak.
1. InnerSphere lostech only. Clan designs using InnerSphere tech have won contests prior (Commando and Panther) and are usually used by solahma or bondsman units. For that reason I wouldn't call it a IIC either.
2. The Hell Cat (or Nova Cat in canon) was advanced more quickly thanks to Quicksilver.

A refit of the Assassin that came about during Anton's Revolt. The 21A is a minor revision of the standard 21 armaments. A swap of the Holly SRM-2 for an additional Holly LRM-5 changes the Jack of all trades feel of the arsenal to more a light support 'Mech. Giving the design longer range punch while still allowing the design to fight at shorter ranges with its Martell Medium Laser.

A Lostech upgrade of the Assassin introduced just prior to the 3rd Marik Civil War. Replacing the weighty 280 standard engine with the lighter but bulkier 280 XL allowed for multiple upgrades including the limited weaponry of the old design to be bolstered significantly adding a Cyclops XII ER Large Laser for an additional long range weapon to work with the twin Holly LRM-5s, the original Martell Medium Laser still exists just moved from the right hand to the left. An additional ton and a half of armor has been added and improved to Hellespont Lite Ferro-Fibrous w/CASE.

Constable
An unusual variant seen only in the Magistracy of Canopus, after acquiring a stockpile of Assassin frames from Andurien during the failed secession of the early 31st century. The Canopians needing to bolster their armed services following the failed operations began refurbishing the design. Unwilling to use same 'Mech design as the FWL the Canopians took the frame and completely reinvented its mission profile. Lowering its overall speed by nearly 40% the newly christened Constable has been kitted out for a more utilitarian role. Centered around its Sunglow Type 2 Large Laser and Holly SRM 4 missile system. For anti-infantry puposes a trio of machine guns and a single flamer have been added.

The Federated Commonwealth Type 51 Variant is a product of Kallon Industries. Winning the bid from the FedCom brass for the refurbishing of the Assassins in mainly Steiner hands, Kallon has gone for a lower top speed for the design. Utilizing their Hermes 240 XL engines found on many designs throughout the Inner Sphere. With the now increased allotment for weaponry and armor. They have added an additional ton and half of Kallon Unity Weave Ferro Fibrous armor. Removing both missile systems and the necessity for a CASE system to protect the potential ammo bins of them, Kallon has attempted to make a competitor for the Phoenix Hawk 3D coming out off Achernar BattleMechs production lines. With twin Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Lasers as the sole weapons systems, the design doesn't do much more damage then its predecessor but it improves drastically its electronics package. With a Guardian ECM system and Beagle Active Probe the design is able to live up to its name seeking out enemy light 'Mechs and striking from surprise with its long range capability. If the variants prove as successful as Kallon believes they will they are prepared to begin full production of the variant in 3054.

I don't want to wander off topic but I do have a version of the Assassin IIC which featured prominently in someone's Star Adder Symphony which I believe we spoken about. ;)

Assassin
The ASN-201 was developed at the request of Capellan March Militia command. With the AFFC focused on the lan threat, the Capellan Confederation began to probe the Capellan March for weakness. Seeking to counter the Capellan scouts, which were composed mainly of Wasp, Stinger, Locust and Raven mechs, the CMM commanders sought a new scout hunter. While the Valkyrie was traditionally used in this role, many of those mechs had been transferred to counter the Clans. Many of the mechs remaining in the Capellan March were older designs and ill-suited to serve as scout hunters.
The commanders of the Capellan March began a program to develop new designs that could meet their needs.
The Alcyone March Miltia was chosen as the trial unit for the new designs. Among the mechs in the Alcyone March Miltia were the only 3 ASN-101 Assassins. These mechs reduced their jump capacity and armor to add 3 small lasers. Considered an ineffective design, they were very much unliked by the mechwarriors of the Alcyone CMM. It was soon proposed to refit these mechs. The old Holly short range missile rack was removed and replaced with a second Holly Long Range Missile Pack. The old electronics were upgraded with more modern Dalban communications and targeting systems. This allowed the mech to carry a Beagle Active Probe, giving the mech the capability to locate enemy scouts. To offset weight of the Beagle Probe, the 3 Maxum 50 Small Lasers were removed. Finally the old Lox Lift Series armor was removed and replaced with StarGuard Ferro Fibrous Armor, providing almost equal protection to the original ASN-21 model.
Field testing showed that the new mech was an ideal scout hunter. It's long range firepower was very effective against most light mechs, which lacked long range weapons. The high speed and jump capacity of the Assassin allowed it to keep up with and catch most light mechs. The Beagle Active Probe ensured that enemy mechs could not hide from the Assassin. Based on these successful trials, the Capellan March Militia command has ordered all remaining Assassins converted to this variant. General Motors of Kathil has been selected to conduct these refits.

Fair enough. It's been my go-to upgrade for almost 12 years now and I perhaps got a bit too excited.
I don't want to wander off topic but I do have a version of the Assassin IIC which featured prominently in someone's Star Adder Symphony which I believe we spoken about. ;)
Well that pretty much is what I posted, but with a different history.
And no promises, but I have been looking at that again.
(words I never thought I'd type in a BT fic plan. "Sharon Bryan is right.")

Nice Irose!
Cool, love to see a reposting of SAS. ;)

A Clan Buster refit, the 007 model was contrived as a means to hunt down Clan scout 'Mechs. Created as an amalgamation of the Talon and Assassin BattleMechs. Utilizing the stripped 280 Extralight engines from the Talon BattleMechs that fell in the Amaris Coup and had been stockpiled for a later date. The design is able to correct one of the longest issues with the design, a cramped cockpit, with the maneuvering of some equipment and replacement of the communications and targeting gear for the same gear found on the Talon. Unfortunately this change caused the loss of some tonnage, but it has nearly doubled the cockpit size making it rather spacious.
Replacing the standard weaponry with a Lord's Light 2 ER PPC and two ChisComp 39 Medium Lasers some designs still use the Martell Medium Lasers depending on whichever cache was used. The last item added was a McArthur Anti-Missile system to assist with the defense from incoming fire.

Manufacturer: Earthwerks Incorporated
Primary Factory: Errai
Communications System: CommuTech Multi-Channel 10
Targeting and Tracking System: BlazeFire Sightlock
Overview:
With the ramping up of producing advanced technology starting from the Clan Invasion there was occasionaly over-run between the various demands for a given piece of equipment. Since it would be ridiculous to simply stockpile them against future use while the Clans were carving their way across the Inner Sphere, an office of the AFFC began actively looking for way that these components could be rushed into service.
Part of this effort was picked up by the continued efforts to convince EarthWerks Incorporated to commit more resources to the Federated Commonwealth than the rather lacksadasical production of the Cataphract on Tikonov, something well below the potential output of Tikograd. The result was an agreement to let Earthwerks pick up the remaining Maltex facilities on Errai, which had fallen under administration after Maltex's supposed involvement in developing the Hatamoto-Chi.
Maltex had managed to keep some parts production going, primarily for the Assassin medium recon 'Mech, so this was where Earthwerks focused their efforts. The first production unit was handed over to the AFFC shortly after the Battle of Tukkayid, although this was workshop assembled and it would be another year until the production line was fully operational.
Capabilities:
Restoring the most intact production lines, Eartwerks engineers quickly that they could modify the chassis of the Assassin to accept the same GM 280 XL reactor used in their Cataphract, creating room for several weapons imported from other worlds.
With the tonnage freed up by the ligher engine, the Assassin sports formidable armament - the same Cyclops XII extended range laser as the Wolfhound provides the primary armament, backed up by an LRM launcher more commonly found in the Valkyrie and a Streak SRM launcher from a Javelin. This makes it simple to group Assassins with these common light 'Mechs of the AFFC.
Deployment:
The first ASN-111, dubbed Triple-I, has been sent to Prince Victor Steiner-Davion's Revenants and assigned to a recon lance as the unit rebuilt after the Teniente operation. Depending on its performance, the Assassin may enter wider use and there is some discussion over Earthwerks providing refit kits for existing Assassins.

Very nice drak!
-
Only two days remaining!!
-
Final day for entries folks. Get your fluff done and everything finalized if you'd like to participate. I've got my four nearly ready to go. All should go up tonight. Good luck!
-
I have removed both of my entries as I will not have time to write the fluff. As fluff-less entries are eliminated from consideration, their presence in this thread was deemed unnecessary by myself.
Good luck to those that found the inspiration to write some fluff. Maybe I can get inspired for the Cicada (which should be next).
Actually, I may miss of the rest of these as too many of the Mechs are built on only one world or their factories were destroyed during the first two Succession Wars. This makes for a very boring contest as we will all be limited on what we can write about, which means the better writers will win. I do not include myself amongst the better writers. I got lucky in the Clan contests.
-
That's a damn shame Abele, was really looking forward to a Blazer carrying Assassin. It would have had real killing power to justly been dubbed an Assassin.
My four will be going up soon, get those designs in folks before midnight ET!

ASN-19 ASSASSIN
Mass: 40 tons

Cruising Speed: 64 kph
Maximum Speed: 97 kph
Jump Jets: Lox Lift Series 1
Jump Capacity: 180 meters

Armament:
1 Martell Medium Laser
2 Holly-5 LRM Launchers
Manufacturer: Hellespont ‘Mech Works
Primary Factory: Sian
Communications System: Ceres Metals Model 668
Targeting and Tracking System: Apple Churchill 2000
Overview:
While the Assassin had been slowly retired from service throughout the InnerSphere due to its many shortcomings the Capellan Confederation needed every BattleMech it could get its hands on. Desperate augment its force and neck deep in the 3rd Marik Civil War despite its ‘official policy of neutrality’ the CCAF authorized the Xin Sheng Program. Aimed at revitalizing Capellan military designs it aimed to utilize both existing 3rd Succession War equipment and new lostech discoveries to enhance Liao troops. With only the most rudimentary lostech available and limited resources upon which to draw this design program produced some interesting results. One of these was the slower but far more durable and longer reaching ASN-19 Assassin which would quickly go on to see service in three different nations as well as some mercenary units.
Capabilities:
The core of this Assassin refit is the Pitban 240 Fusion Power Plant which was fairly common and generally available. Replacing the larger VOX 280 did slow the BattleMech’s speed and reduce its maximum jump capacity but this engine produced on Ares by the Quickscell Company for the Manticore did free up five tons for design improvements. Much of this weight savings went to armor protection which was maximized thanks to seven and a half tons of Hellespont Lite Ferro-Fibrous originally used on the Raven. The SRM loading problem was also solved by its wholesale replacement with a second Holly-5 LRM Launcher which was carefully installed to make certain ammunition jams would not reoccur. Just to be on the safe side engineers were sure to install a two-side torso mounted CASEs to mitigate the possibility of ammo explosions completely. The refit also addressed the poor life support system in the cockpit by swapping out the original electronics systems with newer Capellan made products and redressing the heat shielding. Despite bringing things up to spec in those regards the cockpit is still cramped but Assassin Mechwarriors can deal with that inconvenience. Also retained were the right arm Medium Laser as well as the Lox Lift Series 1 jump jets even though one was removed. Even the Hellespont Type A 40 Series internal structure was merely a copy of the original Maltex 40 chassis which first debuted in 2676. It was further agreed by designers since the max heat generated by a Jumping Alpha Strike produced minor overheating conditions that expensive Double Heat Sinks were not required for this Assassin. Mechwarriors are advised to vary their movement continuously in order to manage these conditions. The cost of this machine compares very favorably to the original ASN-21 which is less than twenty-five thousand C-bills cheaper.
Deployment:
The first combat ready Assassins in this series were refits carried out on Sian, Canopus, and liberated (or occupied depending on whose side you’re on) Andurien. Existing BattleMechs continue to be upgraded in this fashion even if the modification is somewhat backwards. Hellespont ‘Mech Works has recently begun to produce new ASN-19 models from its Sian assembly lines thanks to a licensing agreement reached with Maltex. Currently appearing in the armies of three nations each has its own uses for the Assassin.
The Capellans generally use the Assassin as a cheap way to rebuild their still beleaguered forces after the horrendous damage done by the 4th Succession War. It generally sees service with mostly green and reserve formations who use it as a fire support unit for pursuit and strike lances. The CCAF has employed it as a raider, a minelayer thanks to Thunder LRM rounds, and an effective counter for Davion Light ‘Mech harassers.
Isis Marik has utilized it in her quest to ascend her rightful throne on Atreus which has been aided by Wrath of Blake fanatics. Some of her Cult of Isis followers have terrorized neutral or opposing Provinces in order to advance their own agenda. Rumors have it that ComStar renegades were instrumental in helping this refit along and have even formed a secret unit within the Capellan Confederation but this can’t be proven.
The Marik Stalwarts like their Canopian allies use this new Assassin in tandem with the shorter ranged Amazon. Both mobile ‘Mechs have proven to be excellent compliments to each other on the battlefield. Credible reports indicate that Majesty Metals and Manufacturing on Canopus is trying to reach a licensing agreement with Hellespont and Maltex but these negotiations have been slow going.

ASN-31 ASSASSIN

1 Octagon Missile-Magnet Narc Beacon
Manufacturer: Caliphate Arms
Primary Factory: Ayn Tarma
Communications System: Garret T-15B with Guardian ECM Suite
Targeting and Tracking System: Garret 500S
Overview:
The ASN-23 lostech refit introduced in 3050 was as underwhelming as its predecessor which was slowly being retired from service. Work on a true upgrade package didn’t become a priority until the need for additional BattleMechs was keenly felt in the Free Worlds League. The 3rd Marik Civil War required every possible war machine be pressed into service often against quality lostech opponents. A cultural affinity and military proficiency lead the emerging Province of Tarmanid to order a high-quality refurbishment of the Assassin. Using existing FWLM research and financed by Muslim groups around the InnerSphere this project quickly came together. The newly founded Caliphate Arms of Ayn Tarma had begun to renovate existing Assassins into the ASN-31 by 3053.
Capabilities:
Building on the massed LRM-5 battery philosophy augmented with NARC units the FWLM doubtlessly intended for this drawing board design to be a testbed at best. The internal strife that overtook the League however saw these blueprints fall into Tarmanid hands who quickly went about putting this Assassin into the field. Since it was built on the dependable Maltex 40 chassis, used the capable Lox Lift Series 1 jump jets, and the venerable Garret electronic systems a refit was certainly possible. Especially when paired with the new VOX 280 XL which was manufactured on nearby Tematagi for the Venom. However, in order to install this bulkier high-tech power plant an extensive overhaul was required. While time consuming, this allowed technicians to address many of the Assassin’s faults like low armor plating. Seven tons of Durallex Medium Ferro-Fibrous replaced the four and half tons of 100AFVTA standard armor plating which had to be stripped off anyway. In order to facilitate this process, the Sultan of Tarmanid quickly reached an agreement with Durallex to establish a new foundry on Ayn Tarma. Designers had hoped to maximize the armor protection of the Assassin but ultimately had to free up a half ton for additional equipment resulting in a ninety one percent defense factor. Octagon Missile-Magnet NARC Beacons were initially obtained from Shiro III and then Kendall while the widely available Martell Medium Laser were often originals from the ASN-21. Six of these well-respected energy weapons now compose the ASN-31’s arsenal which has an effective weapons range of two hundred and seventy meters which includes the Narc Missile Launcher that amplifies friendly missile support on enemy targets. Jumping alpha strike will produce a heat spike but running fire will be heat neutral thanks to ten Double Heat Sinks. Finally, a Guardian ECM Suite rounds out this Assassin’s advanced equipment which enables it to nullify enemy electronics or protect friendly electronics. The final cost of nearly seven million seven hundred thousand C-bills more than doubles the original model’s price but numerous proponents say it is worth it.
Deployment:
The need to obtain components for this advanced design lead to its rapid proliferation across the Free Worlds League. Of course, Tarmanid forces field the most of these new Assassins which they use quite effectively with their heavier Dervish’s that provide LRM support. The Rimward States have the next most under arms followed by the Mosiro Archipelago and Kendall Dominion which have all provided vital components in exchange for production share. Rumors that Earthwerks Incorporated on Keystone may soon begin manufacturing new ASN-31 Assassins seem to be well founded as Maltex executives have been spotted in the Marik Commonwealth. A new licensing agreement there would boost numbers of this ‘Mech dramatically among the FWLM and thanks to past arrangements with the Thug both corporations have a relationship to build on.

3 Guided Technologies 2nd Generation Streak SRM-2s
Manufacturer: Maltex Corporation
Primary Factory: Errai
Communications System: Garret T-15B with C3 Slave
Targeting and Tracking System: Garret 500S
Overview:
The Clan Invasion introduced a new threat unit to the modern battlefield of the InnerSphere named the Elemental. This Battlearmor which could effectively threaten a BattleMech terrified many in the Great Houses and demanded a suitable military response. While many existing weapon systems were identified and several new 'Mech designs were proposed none were readily available. The Assassin, which was being retired from service slowly, only required a refit as some Maltex designers claimed. With sufficient lostech equipment they could transform it into an 'Elemental Assassin' which could serve as part of a 'kill team' and effectively neutralize this Clan advantage. However, support for such a refit package was slow to emerge but thankfully for Maltex the Martial Alliance emerged to enable the venture.
Capabilities:
Some have accused Maltex of ripping off concepts used on other Assassin designs which they have licensed to build this advanced war machine. It is true that this ‘extensive refit’ of existing Assassins is very similar to the recent Free Worlds League variant. Both use a VOX 280 XL Engine, which in some cases came from the Venom now produced on Lapida, and seven tons of ferro-fibrous armor to achieve the exact same protection factor as the Marik variant. While the brand of Ferro-Fibrous may indeed be different it’s nearly identical layout both externally and internally have raised some red flags. Legally difficulties normally occurring from this intellectual property theft are not likely in the near future given the ongoing 3rd Marik Civil War and the chaos which has engulfed the League.
However, similar accusations have been leveled by Ceres Metals who have accused the Alliance of copying the armament configuration of their new SNK-1V Snake. Maltex officials are quick to point out that the Victory Drumbeat Large Pulse Laser is very different from the Mydron Excel LB-10X Autocannon used on the Snake. While the three Guided Technologies 2nd Generation Streak SRM-2s are identical to the Snake's their layout is also different. Maltex says that Ceres is simply jealous of their 'Elemental Assassin' which will likely eliminate any market share that the Capellan firm was hoping to exploit. Not to mention Maltex's addition of a C3 Slave which makes it part of a very effective Elemental kill team.
Perhaps even more troubling than these allegations was the late addition of EndoSteel and the removal of a jump jet in order to make the proposed variant work. It seems that overambitious engineers miscalculated the mass needed and more extreme measures had to be taken. Unfortunately, these modifications, especially to the internal structure, required even more of an overhaul than originally thought. Not only did this cause delays in anticipated production but it also prevented work on the Assassin’s cramped cockpit which had poor heat shielding.
Deployment:
The ASN-25 is more of a rebuild than a retrofit now conducted at Maltex's rebuilding Errai facility which has struggled to meet even limited demand. Thus far only been able to mold EndoSteel chassis for existing Assassin most of the components have had to be imported. Thankfully the Order of Five Pillars (O5P) stepped forward to facilitate this arrangement or else production might have ground to a halt. Currently the only unit slated to receive the 'Elemental Assassin' is the Sohei whose affiliation with the O5P may make this an exclusive arrangement depending this BattleMech's success. Both ComStar and the Federated Commonwealth have been offered a production share of the ASN-25 but with the proprietary Draconis C3 technology replaced with a TAG. Thus far these allies have refused this generosity either waiting for Maltex’s Wyvern and Thug manufacturing to begin on site or preferring their own Assassins.

Manufacturer: Defiance Industries
Primary Factory: Furillo
Communications System: TharHes Crystal Flower RG-2
Targeting and Tracking System: O/P 911 with Beagle Active Probe and Targeting Acquisition
Gear
Overview:
Perhaps the most ambitious Assassin BattleMech project launched since the design’s original release is the ASN-33. Built at Furillo by Defiance Industries this program was not intended as a refit of existing models but an entirely new Assassin. Licensed from Maltex this concept would reimagine the ideal by introducing lostech and redesigning some of its trademark equipment. While the overall general appearance and even some components would remain the same it was hoped this new Assassin could effectively serve as a superlative front line recon spotter for InnerSphere forces facing the Clans.
Capabilities:
Basing a new EndoSteel internal structure on the Maltex 40 chassis was the first step in the overhaul process. Development of the new lostech frame did have the additional benefit of aiding the Draconis Assassin being retrofitted on Errai as well as assisting in construction of the new Battle Hawk. Next engineers turned to the Edasich Motors 280 XL used on the ARC-5S and 5W Archer to provide a lighter weight engine which could provide the same high power. This was augmented by the addition of Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry which boosted the 'Mechs speed by forty-three kilometers per hour in short bursts. Seven Rawlings 52 Jump Jets used on the Wasp replaced the old Lox Lift Series 1 as did the eight tons of Riese-100 standard armor plating. Offering slightly more than ninety three percent of maximum protection for this forty-ton BattleMech. The armament was modeled after the Venom likely with input from Draconis Combine. Four Magna 400P Medium Pulse Lasers which had been used on the ASN-23 upgrade were repositioned in the side torsos taking up the space previously occupied by missile systems. As a result, a right-hand actuator was added to the Assassin changing its trademark appearance and enabling greater capabilities when engaged in raiding. Extensive redesigning was also undertaken on the head which now included a full head ejection system similar to the Battle Hawk and the Hatchetman. Along with a new electronics system a Beagle Active Probe and Targeting Acquisition Gear have been added to enhance this 'Mechs primary role, recon spotter. At a cost of over eight million C-bills this is easily the most expensive Assassin design ever before fielded but designers feel it is worth the price tag.
Deployment:
In the Federated Commonwealth the first models of this BattleMech have been requested by the Davion Light Guard, Deneb Light Cavalry, and the 25th Arcturan Guard. Lyran opposition (prejudice) toward such an extravagant light 'Mech has been led by Kommandant Thomas Hograth who has derided its 'Davion influence'. As a result, much of House Steiner's allotment has gone to the elite mercenaries of Eridani Light Horse. The ComGuards have deployed their new Assassins in a similar fashion as the faster Ostscout in the 12th Army. Both spotters stand ready to repulse any new Clan drive toward Terra alongside their Arrow IV equipped compatriots.

Dont mind the 31 model but ones with pulses yuck. Also you got variant numbers wrong for archer its 5s and 5w
-
I think the Pulses have their role. What did you think about the 19? And your right about the Archer number. Changing it now!
Only an hour left folks!!
-
It's a mix of my 21a and Irose 201 definitely more fluffed up then mine. I think it doesn't need max armor could have added another medium laser or something. I like Irose adding the beagle. Thought of making a full scout one but it's not produced anywhere I felt odd evening giving to Liao as production variant. Though I do think the plans were sold to earthwerks so at least a chance.

Well folks that is all we have time for. No more entries please.

No but I was away. Unfortunately I didn't have time. I will link it to the Mercenary thing.

Sorry to hear that Ice, the Assassin review is under way though despite my extreme busy status.

This time around we had eleven designs from four designers (5 Bradshaw, 4 Takiro, 1 Irose, 1 drakensis) plus. Unfortunately, a drakensis design was Clan based and can’t be considered while Abele had a few without fluff he pulled including one with a Blazer. This was indeed a tragedy as ideas and concepts which don’t always win contribute invaluably to each challenge. Even our misses serve to enrich our life and their ruins are the stuff triumphs are built on. While Bradshaw would call this ripping off ideas isn’t that just what BattleTech did? Pacific Rim was a very enjoyable movie just not terribly original. The point is I hope that future contributions lacking fluff or feeling lacking in some way will not be withdrawn as they are valuable too.
PASSABLE
11. ASN-51 (Bradshaw)
A true light Mech hunter this Assassin gets a little slower thanks to the ubiquitous 240 XL (6/9/6) available for many BattleMechs at this time including the Rifleman. Building of the standard chassis allows this to be a refit or a new build which I like a lot. Two ER Large Lasers have nice range but really lack punch which concerns me a lot when using the Beagle Active Probe and Guardian ECM Suite. You have to get in close, six hexes I believe, when using these and your speed reduction makes it harder to get away especially when you factor in twelve Double Heat Sinks. They cool the weapons but not the movement which is a compounding problem in my eyes which will cause you to eventually not fire a ER Large burst or suffer massive overheating. Six tons of ferro-fibrous armor (109 factor) is quite good but I liked another Federated Commonwealth variant better to be honest.
10. ASN-21A (Bradshaw)
This pretty simple mostly level one refit of an earlier refit I could see working pretty well except for one thing which is admittedly my conclusion. This Marik effort is based on a refit seen during Anton’s Revolt which swapped out the SRM for another LRM-5. The 280 Fusion (7/11/7) remains along with ten single Heat Sinks and the trademark Medium Laser which completes its appearance. The only level two improvement which was presumably made recently is 4.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor (80 factor) which would apparently replace the same amount of standard armor (72 factor). Not bad but I have it in my mind as an Anton variant which might have a bit of a rebel stigmata to loyal FWLM types. I like it and sets up others quite well but others even low-tech approach variants are better in my opinion, sorry Bradshaw!
9. ASN-22 (Bradshaw)
This a big upgrade from the Capellan Confederation that utilizes a 280 XL (7/11/7) Engine and ten Double Heat Sinks to turn it into a highly mobile sniper. An ER Large, two LRM-5 (48), and a Medium Laser give it pretty solid medium but mostly long-range firepower. Six tons of ferro-fibrous armor (107 factor) with CASE is pretty good protection wise. All in all, a pretty darn capable Medium BattleMech with only one problem to me. It is a little too advanced for House Liao, especially without direct Marik support, at this time at least in my opinion who’d probably go in a less sophisticated but effective direction.
CONTENDERS
8. Constable (Bradshaw)
Slowing it way down with a 200 Fusion (5/8/5) Engine and renaming it the Constable which is presumably used for keeping order. With a Large Laser, SRM-4 (25), three Machine Guns (100), and a Flamer it is more of a mid to short range attacker. A dozen single Heat Sinks do a pretty good job of keeping this design cool while seven tons of standard armor (112 factor) do a nice job of protecting it from enemy fire. Not a bad trooper at all for the Magistracy of Canopus but unfortunately, I was thinking of taking a different direction for their Assassin.
7. ASN-201 (Irose)
Building on the canon 101 this variant likewise sacrifices two jump jets but retains the 280 Fusion (7/11/5) Engine. It also drops the SRM for a second LRM-5 and retains the Medium Laser making it a good long-range hitter especially against light units its designed to hunt. Ten Single Heat Sinks still do a solid job of dissipating weapons fire and movement heat. Four tons of ferro-fibrous armor (71 factor) nearly matches the armor protection of the original model. I would have liked to have seen this improved but as a Capellan March Militia (CMM) counter for Capellan light raiders it is acceptable. The Beagle Active Probe can detect hidden units true but I worry that a design like this might find trouble it is unable to deal with. However, it is fast enough to get out to effective weapons range should trouble appear and the fluff is spot on. Close call but I like some others better, sorry Irose.
6. ASN-111 (drakensis)
This Federated Commonwealth model called the ‘Triple I’ features a 280 XL (7/11/7) Engine and ten Double Heat Sinks. With an ER Large, LRM-10 (12), and a Streak SRM-2 (50) the weapons have all been upgraded especially in regards to long range firepower. An Artemis IV FCS for the LRMs or a second Streak SRM-2 would have been nice and extra mass could have been obtained by use of EndoSteel especially since this is a new build at Errai. Five tons of standard armor (80 factor) is an improvement over the original but I wish that Ferro-Fibrous had been included for even more protection. Still very close but just not what I was looking for here, sorry drakensis.
WINNERS
5. ASN-25 (Takiro)
An ‘Elemental Assassin’ from the Draconis Combine sure would be a good concept for House Kurita at this time so I sat down and looked over designs. While the Komodo stood out from TRO 3055 so did the Snake and Kurita’s refusal to purchase it. A little strange given their need but what if they already had a version of it that could do what it promised. Enter this design which uses a 280 XL (7/11/6) Engine to exceed the Snake’s speed and maneuverability. The Large Pulse Laser replaces the LB 10-X Autocannon which has its trade offs but I think is a net positive. The energy weapon is lighter, doesn’t require ammo, and is more accurate than the lower heat generating and longer-range ballistic rifle. Ten Double Heat Sinks do much to alleviate overheating concerns which thanks to three Streak SRM-2s (50) can be further mitigated. Already highly accurate a C3 Slave just adds to its ability to work as part of a kill team and seven tons of ferro-fibrous armor (125 factor) is pretty solid protection. While I was hoping for more out of this design, such as the ability to refit existing standard chassis, some bad math early on prevented this and required EndoSteel. So, while it fits my ideal of a Kurita Assassin at this time it is ranked five because of this disappointment.
4. ASN-33 (Takiro)
This newly built Assassin from the Federated Commonwealth was supposed to be the epitome of the hunter killer described in the original fluff. Utilizing EndoSteel, a 280 XL (7/11/7) Engine, and MASC (14) this light weight core for this Medium BattleMech would make the Assassin the most expensive design here but worth it in my opinion. This would allow a Beagle Active Probe to discover any hidden units and a TAG to call in artillery support in order to decimate them. Using the Venom’s armament of four Medium Pulses allows it to deal effectively with any close-range opposition which could range from scout ‘Mechs, Elementals, or infantry. Even a Jumping Alpha Strike from this Mech would not produce a drastic overheat that could be mitigated by running the following turn. Eight tons of standard armor (128 factor) give it the second most protection of any Assassin here. It is expensive yes and uses all the lostech goodies it can to maximize its operations true but that is why others are placed higher here.
3. ASN-31 (Takiro)
This was the initial Assassin concept I had courtesy of Miss Kotare and her Tarmanid peoples which are combined with the growing Marik philosophy NARC Beacon in the Salient Horizon setting. Using the existing Maltex 40 chassis, the 280 XL (7/11/7) Engine serves as the main component for this upgrade which allows for the addition of the Narc Missile Launcher (6) and five additional Medium Lasers. Ten Double Heat Sinks allow this machine to close distance with an enemy showering them with a Narc Beacon and laser fire. Seven tons of ferro-fibrous armor (125 factor) mean this fighter can take some punishment while it and its Dervish friends eliminate any opposition. Good enough for the bronze this time around.
2. ASN-19 (Takiro)
The second Assassin concept I had was this lower tech approach would be an effective and cheap refit. Using a 240 Fusion (6/9/6) this downgrade swaps out the SRM-2 for a second LRM-5 like others have here and uses ten Single Heat Sinks to cool it. Again, by alternating jumping and running Alpha Strikes this can be managed quite ably. Seven and a half tons of ferro-fibrous armor (134 factor) is the best of any Assassin featured here. This Capellan refit which is being used by Isis Marik loyalists and Canopians as well some others grew into my favorite submission. I can see the Confederation activating these Mechs for defense and helping to refit its allies who it is arming at this time. Silver medal.
1. ASN-007 (Bradshaw)
Mechwarrior Bond, James Bond, is presumably going to be piloting this ‘Mech licensed to kill Clan scout ‘Mechs. This Clanbuster apparently deployed in limited numbers on Tukayyid utilized parts from the Talon to enhance the Assassin. Chief among these are the 280 XL (7/11/7) Engine, the ER PPC and two Medium Laser. This effectively crosses both designs creating a highly mobile long-range sniper which is well protected thanks to an Anti-Missile System and 6.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor (116 factor). Eleven Double Heat Sinks cool its operations except when combining extreme maneuvering (jumping) with an all-out barrage. I could certainly see a handful of these Assassins being used at the great battle and the ComGuards issuing a call for more afterward. Nice job and top prize to this double contest winner, congrats Bradshaw!

I didn't look at what others did before but my own idea was a lot like Bradshaw's ASN-21A, which I found one of the most plausible upgrade as this is an Assassin, not a really common 'Mech.
-
Yeah wasn't even thinking it as an Anton design just that it came about back then but whatever. Tak with almost the clean sweep.

I believe there were three designs [ASN-21A (Bradshaw), ASN-201 (Irose), & my ASN-19] which replaced the SRM-2 with a second LRM-5. It is was a solid approach as I liked all three but sadly there could be only one!
I always give preference to competitors here rather than myself Bradshaw but this time felt like my designs were the way to go. Congrats on your ComStar Clanbuster! Q branch did a nice job!! ;)
There maybe a surprise late addition here at a later date, which would be a first, stay tuned!
