In the future of the 1980s that is BattleTech can any ‘Mech be better named the Awesome? I don’t think so! That’s right folks we have arrived the forty-sixth design challenge and it’s time to go over the biggest BattleMechs available, the Assaults. That’s right folks if PPCs are the drink of choice then your gonna get trashed pretty quick playing with this ‘Mech. According to the Random Assignment Table in Mechwarrior 2nd Edition (page 20) every Great House save Kurita makes use of this formidable BattleTech. I’d expect to find it even in Draconis space in limited numbers and probably in the service of some mercenary units as well. The 8Q even saw service in ComGuard Fire Level IIs at the Great Battle of Tukayyid so basically everyone can use it. Two manufacturers (Technicron Manufacturing on Savannah and Irian BattleMechs) lay within the Free Worlds League and could play a major role in the ongoing Civil War arc. A lot of possibilities here folks. I really can’t wait to see what you can come up with for the BattleTech Salient Horizon setting. The Mech of the Week article from CBT and BattleTechWiki are also available to provide us with some inspiration (links below)

The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.
Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday August 13th 2021 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

Awesome AWS-9R
A refit of the 9M design from Irian BattleMechs Unlimited utilizing their expanding production of the valuable Endo Steel Battlemech component. Finding the the large and expensive Hermes 320XL not as effective as was believed on the design. Long loved and feared the older 8Q variant was a terror on the battlefield with its never ending firepower and strong and durable design. The 9M was found to be extremely vulnerable once the torso armor was breached effectively taking the 'Mech out of the battle where the older variant would be able to keep on slugging away. With the opening of trade unseen since the days of the Star League between the Great Houses, due to the Clan Invasion, Irian has reached out Defiance Industries for a supply of Pitban 320 fusion engines. This was done in an effort to maintain the maneuverability offered 9M variant but keep the inherent dependability of the 8Q. This was able to be done by the reworking of the chassis with the expanded Endo Steel production. Additional tweaks to the design were also required for this increased tonnage, some of the coolant systems were needed to be removed due to their large sizes and with this decision it was also decided to remove one of the Fusigon Longtooth ER PPCs for a Magna Mk III Large Laser. The Diverse Optics Type 10 Small Pulse Laser has been kept and as additional support an Olympian Flamer has been added. For additional defense an Octagon Anti-Missile system has been added for shooting down incoming missiles.

In a public relations maneuver the Federated Commonwealth has begun construction on Demeter of a new Lycomb-Davion IntroTech facility. Taking advantage of the large population base and old history between the planet and company, the Federated Commonwealth has begun a large effort of expanding their war production and spreading out from the existing worlds. This is seen as essential in bolstering the economy of many of the regional areas in the realm. With the shortening of some supply lines as a added bonus. Not expected to be completed until 3055 this new facility will showcase an improved variant of the Awesome, records shared by unnamed sources indicate the design was a variant that was proposed to the SLDF by LDI in the 28th century but never approved for production.
Keeping many of the features that 8Q including the engine and armor the design calls for the inclusion of Endo Steel as a weight saving method. Replacing the standard heat coolant technology with the bulkier but more effective advanced heat reduction technologies 13 tons was able to saved as well. These saving were dedicated to the replacement of the arm mounted PPC with instead a Gauss Rifle. With nearly identical range but 50% more damage the cool running weapon allows the design to be much more heat efficient. With 24 rounds devoted towards this new weapon only extremely long campaigns will see the 'Mech fall short with ammo. With the additional tonnage still available an Anti-Missile system has been added to the design to increase the already survivability of the "Zombie" design. The last change was the removal of the small laser and replacement with a Targeting Acquisition Gear for those opponents that even this awesome design can't tackle.

AWS-9D Awesome
While House Davion does not manufacture the Awesome, the Federated Suns has adopted a refit/upgrade program from those BattleMechs already within the AFFS. The Pitban 240 fusion engine has been retained, along with 15.0 tons of Durallex Heavy armor plating and the electronics packages (communications as well as targeting & tracking) remain unchanged.
Earthwerks, Incorporated did however choose to replace the existing heat sinks (18 tons worth!) with new production double-strength freezers . . . nineteen in total. Having nine free tons, the design team added one additional Kreuss PPC (left arm) and two rear-firing Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers in the center torso.
While mobility has not increased, nor has engagement range, the AWS-9D is able to bring four PPCs to bear on a target in their front arc . . . and has the heat dissipation capabilities to fire all four of them on a regular basis, generating only slight excess overheat. But using the weapons in a 4/4/3 firing pattern will keep overheat buildup to a minimum.
As with the older AWS-8Q Awesome, the AWS-8D is proving it is just as much of what is commonly referred to as a "Zombie". Lacking any explosive components and having its internal spaces filled with DHS that can absorb damage (even if they are inoperable from other damage), this Davion version promises to be extremely effective on the battlefield.

AWS-9L Awesome
In a similar fashion, House Liao has also begun a program to overhaul and refit their Awesomes. The old Pitban 240 fusion engine has been replaced with a Pitban 320 to increase overall speed and mobility. The armor plating has been replaced with 13.0 tons of Durallex Heavy Special Ferro-Fibrous, resulting in a slight loss of protection over the AWS-8Q. Nineteen Double-Strength heat sinks have been fitted as well.
The armament package has been completely changed, resulting in a 'Mech that bears more resemblence to the Flashman than the Awesome. Primary armament consists of three Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Lasers (right torso, left torso, and right arm), supported at closer ranges by four Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Lasers (right torso, left torso, head, and left arm). A Guardian ECM Suite has been mounted in the center torso as well.
While this variant will overheat on an Alpha Strike, at range it is able to run and gun with the three ER Large Lasers and remain heat-neutral. In close, it can cut one ER Large Laser from the firing circuit to add all four Medium Lasers and still remain heat neutral on a run.

AWS-9K Awesome
While House Kurita fields the fewest number of Awesomes of any Great House, it too has begun a refit and upgrade program at their Luthien Armor Works facility on Luthien. Like the Capellan model, it removes the Pitban 240 fusion and replaces it with a Pitban 320 for increased speed. Ferro-Fibrous armor plating (13.5 tons) has been fitted, giving slightly greater armor protection than the AWS-8Q.
Sixteen DHS have been fitted as well, providing ample cooling for the three Lord's Light PPCs that this variant mounts. The head-mounted Small Laser has been removed and replaced with a center torso mounted Diverse Optics Type 10P Small Pulse Laser . . . giving this Awesome some limited anti-infantry capacity. In addition, a Tanadi Citizen C3 Slave Module has been installed in the head.
The sixteen DHS allows for the Kurita Awesome to run and gun with the PPCs without suffering any excess overheat buildup; adding the Small Pulse Laser at point-blank range adds just minimal excess overheat.

AWS-9M Awesome
House Marik has upgraded both of its facilities that produce the Awesome in order to field the newly designed AWS-9M model. Using advanced Endo-Steel internal structure and carrying 20 Double-Strength Heat Sinks, the Mark Awesome takes advantage of the weight savings to upgrade the Pitban 240 engine to a Pitban 320 (taken from Goliath production lines) providing a boost in speed.
Fifteen tons of armor plating is identical to that of the AWS-8Q, providing excellent protection and a very robust, zombie-like 'Mech.
Armament consists of two Fusigon Longtooth ER PPCs (right torso and left torso), a Fusigon PPC (right arm), and a Diverse Optics Type 10 Small Laser (head).
While the armament package has not been greatly changed, the AWS-9M has greater range and the two Longtooth ER PPCs have no minimum range. Excess overheat production is relatively minor as well, even with the heat spike produced by the twin ER PPCs.
Since 3052, the AWS-9M has been in full production on both Savannah and Irian.

AWS-9S Awesome
And, finally, there is the AWS-9S variant which House Steiner has begun to refit and overhaul at their Defiance Industries facility on Hesperus II. Full-scale production is not yet available, but existing AWS-8x models are being upgraded as quickly as Defiance can perform the work.
Like the Davion version, the engine remains the standard 240-rate Pitban fusion engine seen in the AWS-8Q, although the armor has been replaced with 14.0 tons of Durallex Heavy Special Ferro-Fibrous (for the best possible armor protection available for an 80-ton bipedal chassis). Only ten heat sinks are mounted, but these are Double-Strength Freezers.
The armament package has been completely reworked, as Lyran engineers decided to use the 'Mech as a test bed for a multiple Gauss configuration. Two Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifles are mounted as the primary weapons (right torso and left torso, fed by three tons of ammunition for a total of 24 shots, 12 per Gauss Rifle), supported by a Defiance 1001 ER PPC in the right arm. The Diverse Optics Type 10 Small Laser mounted in the head was retained unchanged.
Despite mounting just 10 DHS, the AWS-9S is heat neutral even on a running Alpha Strike . . . no mean feat for an Awesome. Maximum damage is solid as well, but one minor complaint has been that the 'Mech is no longer as much of a zombie, despite the increase in armor protection. Due to the explosive nature of the Gauss Rifles themselves, it does make this variant slightly more vulnerable (but proponents say the danger is minimal and even one of the Gauss Rifles detonates, the damage is relatively minor and well worth the additional range and concentrated damage inflicted).
Rumor suggests that Defiance is attempting to convert a production line for this new variant to begin full-scale production of new Awesomes, although this may simply be a rumor.

And there you have it. Five awesome Awesome variants (heh!), one for each Great House. I didn't do any for the Periphery because it just doesn't fit (at least not well). Might do a Comstar version later as well, but I'm not sure about that (they will probably just use (and build!) the Marik version).
Anyway, hope ya'll enjoy!

Well done Bradshaw (3) and masterarminas (5)!!
A bunch of good Awesomes to kick us off in a major way for this contest.
You both hit on my two concepts and with your last two posts in a big way. Was going for a Large Laser loadout by ComStar which could well be a refit of existing Awesomes based loosely on the Flashman. Probably commissioned to make good on losses suffered at Tukayyid. I was planning on five in my concept but six is impressive!

The AWS-10M is a minor upgrade to the AWS-9M. Built by Technicron, the AWS-9M addresses the biggest complaint about the -9M, the inclusion of ammo dependent weapons. The original Awesome, besides possessing incredible firepower, was highly regarded for the fact that none of it's weapons required ammo, allowing the mech to remain on the battlefield indefinitely and removing any possibility of an ammo explosion. Many mechwarriors were upset about the inclusion of a pair of SRM 2 Streak launchers with their associated ammo bin in the mech's leg. This unhappiness turned into outright anger when a -9M was destroyed while defending against a pirate raid. The mech was only lightly damaged when it took a hit to the leg ammo bin. The ammo bin, which was nearly full exploded, destroying the mech's leg and badly damaging the side torso. The mechwarrior survived but was badly injured. When word of this reached other mechwarriors, they began leaving the ammo bin empty.
Technicron fearing that the bad publicity would hinder sales of the -9M, quickly introduced a new model. Removing the SRMs and their ammo bins, they added additional lasers to the mech. The center torso mount Medium Pulse Laser was moved to the left arm and a second laser added. Firing through the missile ports for the SRM 2 Streak Launcher on the -9M, the -10M is nearly impossible to visually distinguish from the -9M. The only other change was to add a pair of rear firing medium lasers to protect against any enemies attempting to get behind the Awesome.

One of the challenges facing Technicron Manufacturing is that their two signature ‘Mechs – the Quickdraw and the Awesome – are also produced by much larger armaments firms with stronger ties to the Great Houses – Luthien Armor Works for the Quickdraw, and Irian Battlemechs Unlimited for the Awesome. Ironically, both competitors arose as a result of Technicron’s struggles to survive throughout the Succession Wars, but despite that, Technicron has often had to demonstrate considerable agility in order to retain market share against their far larger rivals.
Technicron invested heavily in lostech in the 3040s, choosing to focus on Star-League era extended range energy weapons and extra light fusion engines. The AWS-9M was released to great fanfare in 3049, and its 64kph top speed and ER PPCs were major selling points, and the tremendous retail price of the 9M (over double that of the classic 8Q) was eagerly paid by House forces anxious to gain an edge over their rivals.
Then the Clan Invasion changed everything. Following the peace at Tukayyid, rebuilding FedCom and Combine forces were unwilling to spend over twice as much for an assault ‘Mech that was only marginally faster and longer-ranged than an older variant, and as a smaller firm, Technicron was unable to offer value-added service and logistics contracts that could compare to those underwritten by Irian. The problem was exacerbated by the chronic shortage of Fusigon Longtooth ER PPCs, which had been advanced ordered well into the late 3050s by the Federated Commonwealth for their own ‘Mechs and units.
Technicron scrambled for an alternative, and were able to restart production of older Kreuss standard PPCs, but had already converted their Pitban 240 standard fusion engine production lines, and the only ready source of 240-rated engines would have been the Hermes 240, manufactured by… Irian Battlemech Unlimited, which was already offering limited runs of classic, low-cost AWS-8Qs to interested parties. Instead, Technicron acquired the remaining stockpile of Magna 250 engines being held by smaller firms Kali Yama Weapon Industries of Kalidasa, and Corean-Stewart. The Magna 250s were available in part because both firms had upgraded their Trebuchet lines to use XL engines. Although intended purely as a stop-gap measure, Technicron discovered that the slightly oversized fusion engine allowed them to squeeze in additional double heat sinks to increase the cooling capacity of the Awesome. Test pilots also liked the modest additional ‘responsiveness’ of the lumbering ‘Mech, and as a result, their so-called 250 series effectively became their new standard power source.
The core Awesome in Technicron’s new catalog is the back-numbered AWS-8U, which represents a sizable step back from Technicron’s massive investment in XL technology and ER weaponns. The 8U is an extremely basic design, with four reliable and durable Kreuss PPCs, and twenty double-strength heat sinks packed into its massive 80-ton frame. It carries a full fifteen-and-a-half tons of “Durallex Heavy” standard ‘Mech armor, half a ton more than the classic Awesome, but does sacrifice any short-ranged firepower in doing so, relying exclusively on the threat of its four big guns.
Due to customer interest, Technicron offers two other variants to its 250-series, with the AWS-8T2 an upgrade of a moderately popular LRM variant from the Succession Wars era. Fitted with sixty-tubes of Zeus LRM launchers (sourced from KaliYama and Corean-Stewart) with thirty in each side torso, and a Magna Mk III large laser in the right arm housing as a ‘backup’ weapon, the AWS-8T2 has double the throw-weight of the older 8T variant, more than even an Archer or Longbow – an achievement possible because of the use of double heat sink technology. Ten tons of CASE-protected ammunition supply the launchers, with five tons of missiles in each side torso.
Technicron also offers the AWS-8Y, effectively turning the Awesome into a bipedal Demolisher. It carries a massive Kali Yama Big Bore AC/20 in each side torso, with six tons of ammunition in a boxy left-shoulder ammunition feed, indirectly CASE-protected at the left-torso rotator joint. As a single “backup” weapon, it carries a Magna Mk II large laser, and unusually, it also equips a Guardian ECM Suite in its center torso. Intended purely as a defensive anvil and offensive linebreaker, the 8Y has truly terrifying levels of firepower, although it is hampered to a great extent by the limited range of its primary weapons systems.
With an eye toward the future, Technicron is already working on a licensing deal with ImStar Aerospace to manufacture a ‘Mech-based variant of their GM 250a fusion engines, and the popularity of their AWS-8U, in particular, has forced Irian to re-assess their own production of Awesomes.

The AWS-10I was developed in response to complaints about the AWS-9M and it's usage of an XL engine. More fragile then a standard engine, many mechwarriors considered the use of an XL engine a mistake. Irian Technologies began looking at new versions of the Awesome that did not rely on an XL engine. A number of variants were developed by Irian. Some of them retained a 320 rated engine and the PPC armament. Others went back to the older 240 rated engine and looked at alternative weapons load outs. Recognizing the need for a heavy long range fire support unit, Irian developed the -10I based in part on the old -8R. Using the older Hermes 240 Engine, the mech uses a newly developed endo-steel frame. However instead of mounting a Large Laser and a pair of LRM15s, the mech carries 4 Zeus LRM 15 racks. Each rack is supplied with 2 tons of ammo. With so much ammo, the bins are protected by a CASE system. Secondary weaponry consists of 3 arm mounted medium lasers to protect against any threats that get under the minimum range of the missile systems. There are also 2 torso mounted medium lasers that are used to protect against attacks against the mech's rear by flanking units. Lastly a small pulse laser provides protection against infantry that may get close to the Awesome.

Had the same concept as misterarminas, but attributed the design to Irian, who also has the capability to produce an Endosteel chassis and really up the battlefield durability of the design. The price-point is solid, but the BV is monstrous, mostly because it has a double-Gauss setup.

Following the Clan Invasion, and the desperate military rebuild of the AFFC and DCMS, Irian Battlemechs Unlimited was faced with the possibility of significant losses with the upgraded AWS-9M line, an assault ‘Mech line that was commonly seen as overpriced, underpowered, and (most devastatingly) undersinked for its weapons systems. While their marketing team set about trying to sell their existing stockpile of AWS-9M war machines, the home company’s technical teams were tasked with quickly producing a viable Awesome product, given the company’s existing resources.
Unlike many of their competitors in the 80-ton assault market, due to their huge and diverse offering of upgraded battlemechs, Irian had ready access to a variety of lostech weapons systems, as well as lostech components such as Crucis-brand Endosteel and Jolassa-328 Ferro-Fibrous armor. Engineers chose to bulk out their existing Crucis-I Endosteel frames (in production for the Guillotine), as that was seen as simpler to accomplish in the short time frame than creating a new set of armored molds for their Ferro-Fibrous armor, which to date was only being used on their light scout ‘Mech, the Hermes Mk I. The expensive (and unpopular) Hermes 320 XL engine was traded out for a cheaper and smaller Hermes 240, already in production on-site, and the Awesome’s already impressive protection was increased even further, to fifteen and a half tons of “Durallex Special Heavy” armor.
As for weapons systems, Irian was facing the same supply shortage of Fusigon Longtooth ER PPCs that all League manufacturers were facing, due to the Federated Commonwealth having cornered the League’s ER PPC production. As a result, Irian’s reworked Awesome offering, designated the AWS-9A, carries just one ER PPC in the right arm housing. In the two torsos, the AWS-9A equips Zeus Slingshot Gauss Rifles, a new Irian product that just reached mass production in 3053. Supplied with a generous five tons of ammunition, and with integrated CASE protection for each Gauss Rifle, the AWS-9A can sustain a lengthy fussilade of supporting fire, and protect the valuable 80-ton assault chassis from complete destruction in the event of catastrophic failure of the Gauss Rifles’ powerful magnetic rails.
The new Awesome has been received enthusiastically by customers across the Inner Sphere, but Irian has been quietly reserving a sizable portion of their new AWS-9A production for friendly League units in the rapidly expanding Marik Civil War.

Really? Seems like a pretty obvious way to add the extra double heat sink. And it makes more sense than the silly ECM in the 9Q. Why would you put an ECM bubble on a long-range support mech?
-
Following the introduction of the -10I, Irian began looking at other possible weapons configurations using the same engine and chassis. One proposal called for the removal of the LRMs and replacing them with a pair of Gauss Rifles, providing a powerful direct fire long range weapon. Mounted in the torso of the mechs, the Gauss Rifles are supplied with 2 tons of ammo each, allowing the mech to maintain a steady rate of fire. Supporting the Gauss Rifles is a Fusigon ER PPC in the right arm. A single medium laser protects the rear of the mech, while a small pulse laser deals with threats that get too close or infantry targets. The mech only mounts 10 double strength heatsinks but this has proven to be able to handle all but the heaviest sustained fire.

ECM for defensive purposes was my thought not the sneaky side of it
-
Bradshaw: ECM for defensive purposes was my thought not the sneaky side of it
With regard to the 9Q, what defensive purpose?
The ECM is 'defense' against Artemis and C3 and Narc systems. I guess it helps a little against C3-equipped forces? But the benefit against Artemis is 1 or 2 missiles per flight... less than an anti-missile system. And if you're wasting time Narcing a long-ranged support unit, ECM or no ECM, then you're wasting your initiative and Narc beacons.
Obviously the ECM on an Awesome isn't going to be useful for Stealth armor. So the only remaining real utility is to act as an ECM bubble that protects *other* nearby 'Mechs. But that's not helpful for long-ranged support units, because the bubble is most useful when it's right in the middle of the brawl and affecting as many LOS shots as possible.
And an ECM at the back edge isn't going to be useful for any of the advanced rules uses of ECM either, like ECCM or hidden movement shenanigans.
Strikes me as BTech designers wondering what to do with the "spare" 1.5 tons of weight because they couldn't squeeze in another double heat sink, and decided to install a 200K c-bill electronics system. By comparison, I increased the engine weight to 250 (which costs 53K c-bills) and voila! Space for another 6K double heat sink. Badda bing, badda boom.

Looking forward to the Charger concepts in two weeks! ;)
It seems like designers agree that the ECM is a waste given its range (6 hexes) and here I thought the 9Q was pretty darn optimal.
Overpowering the Awesome with a 250 Fusion is ingenious, optimal, and not against my contest rules. Is it something you'd see out of a manufacturer or something out of a custom refit.
Nice Dual Gauss and ER PPC entry Irose. I believe this is the third variation on that theme. You guys are giving me an idea though...

AWS-9DS AWESOME
Mass: 80 tons

Power Plant: Pitban 240
Cruising Speed: 32 kph
Maximum Speed: 54 kph
Jump Jets: None
Jump Capacity: None
Armor: Durallex Heavy with CASE
Armament:
2 Defiance Disintegrator LB 10-X Autocannons
2 Kreuss Particle Projection Cannons
1 Martell Medium Laser
Manufacturer: Lycomb-Davion IntroTech
Primary Factory: New Avalon (refits only)
Communications System: Garret T19-G
Targeting and Tracking System: Dynatec 2780
Overview:
The destruction of the Lycomb-Davion facility on Demeter in 2795 by the Capellan Confederation nearly annihilated them from the face of the InnerSphere. Luckily for the company construction of a second factory on New Avalon far from the border regions was completed saving their primary Aerospace production. Unfortunately, their secondary BattleMech assembly lines that included the Awesome could not be saved. While the firm continued on as a premier fighter manufacturer throughout the Succession Wars no one could have anticipated that its ‘Mech production would ever be restarted. This all changed after the Truce of Tukayyid when FedCom engineers began looking for ways to upgrade every available ‘Mech. Discovering that Lycomb-Davion still had license to the Awesome spurred on some initial research done on New Avalon. The AWS-9DS refit project came together quickly thanks to cooperation at multiple levels including government, corporate, and scientific entities to numerous to list.
Capabilities:
The endeavor began with existing Awesome ‘Mechs in service with the Federated Commonwealth being shipped to Lycomb-Davion IntroTech for extensive overhauling. Their Type G EndoSteel chassis which was directly based on the original hardy Technicron standard skeleton. While Lycomb-Davion was responsible for the frame design they relied on other New Avalon companies like Achernar BattleMechs and Corean Enterprises to supply the actual EndoSteel from their existing forges. The highly reliable Pitban 240 Fusion Engine was retained to power this new Awesome which featured only thirteen Double Heat Sinks rather than the previous twenty-eight Heat Sinks. Two Defiance Disintegrator LB 10-X Autocannons previously used on the Hatchetman provided better heat balance than the PPCs. These side torso mounted guns favored by Davion Mechwarriors are fed by thirty rounds of ammunition. These shells are stored in the right torso which is safeguarded against catastrophic explosions by a CASE. Additionally, two of the Kreuss PPCs have been retained and placed in each arm giving this ‘Mech a fearsome punch. Together these four main guns can fire continuously on this design for fifteen rounds with an effective combat range of five hundred and forty meters (18 hexes). A single Martell Medium Laser from the Stuka K5 replaced the head mounted Diverse Optics Type 10 Small Laser for supplemental close-range firepower. This impressive offensive firepower coupled with fifteen tons of Durallex Heavy armor plating that provides near maximum protection for this eighty-ton BattleMech make it a truly dangerous, albeit slow moving, foe.
Deployment:
The first refurbished AWS-9DS was immediately assigned to Team Banzai for extensive field testing. Initial reports describe it as an extremely rugged cost-effective siege master that can lay waste to almost any opponent. Superior Clan speed and weapon ranges do give even the staunchest design proponents pause but as a defender for static high value targets it cannot be outmaneuvered. In this fashion it will make any threat force pay heavily for ground taken from the Federated Commonwealth.

Just because why not?
A one off design engineered for Lieutenant Giles "The Banger" Barners of the Brion's Legion. Whose Awesome the Kwik Killer was upgraded by Comstar Astech's upon request after the signing of Brion's Legion during the 4th Succession War. Though no longer piloted by Lt. Giles the 'Mech is now piloted by his daughter Lieutenant Amanda Barners. With it slowly being upgraded over the years from the chassis to the engine into a true killer. Outfitted with three M-7 Gauss Rifles and nothing else the damage output for this design is 50% more powerful then the traditional Awesome, though extremely heat friendly it unlike its predecessor does not have the staying power upon the battlefield with less armor and ammo concerns a major issue. The Barners though have not had to worry about this issue as they have been stationed on Terra for the past few decades and its unknown when the design will ever see true battle.

Doesn't it affect Streaks and Targeting Computers as well?
NVM I see it doesn't affect either. Yeah you're right its a waste of tech.
-
I thought it did effect Streaks and Targeting Computers but not NARCs. Still you have your adversary in that 6 hex bubble to have it work and for the Awesome that is not in the cards.
Nice job on the Tri-Gauss-some!

The following five designs represent factory approved upgrades to the lower tech variants that have been extant since the end of the end of Star League. The first is quite expensive for most mercenary units and is intended for house militaries. Using the AWS-8Q as a template, all of the the PPCs have been removed and the single heat sinks have been replaced by double heat sinks. A 240 XL engine replaces the standard 240. The main firepower is provided by an Imperator Dragon's Fire Gauss rifle and is backed up by a pair of Diverse Optics Type 30P large pulse lasers. Close range support is provided by a trio of Diverse Optics 20P medium pulse lasers. To defend against enemy missile attack, a Voelkers Parasol anti-missile system with two tons ammunition is mounted.

The second upgrade is based on the LRM-equipped AWS-8R. The Awesome-9R is intended for larger mercenary units or house militaries. The standard 240 engine has been modified to mount double heat sinks with a total of eleven being mounted. The twin LRM15s have been replaced by a pair of Artemis IV FCS-equipped LRM20s, each with three tons of ammunition. Support weapons include an ER large laser and a pair of standard medium lasers. To protect against counter-battery fire an anti-missile is also mounted. A half-ton of armor was sacrificed to make all of these changes.

The third upgrade is based on the AWS-8T with its twinned large lasers and LRM15s. Double heat sinks are now mounted in place of the old single heat sinks. The major change is the upgrade of the large lasers to pulse models while the ammo bins for the LRM15s now carry three tons of missiles for each launcher. A medium laser and a small laser provide some added firepower for this model. Thirteen double heat sinks handle the heat load while armor protection is the same as the AWS-9R upgrade.

The final upgrade to the Awesome involves the AWS-8V variant. There are two versions of this design, the factory built one and the its proposed after market refit. Both variants see a speed increase due to the application of a standard 320 fusion engine. The factory-built variant sees the PPC replaced by a large pulse laser while the large laser has been upgraded to an ER model. The major weapons change is the replacement of the LRM15 by a LB 10-X auto-cannon with two tons of ammunition. Support weapons include a single medium laser and a small pulse laser. Thirteen tons of ferro-fibrous protects the pilot and Mech and a total of twelve double heat sinks are used to handle the heat of the energy-based weapons.

Nice Abele, looking for some Blazer Awesomes!

Walter 'Killer Koala' Kowalski is a Lyran-born Mechwarrior from the planet of Adelaide. He's veteran of the Fourth Succession War and the War of 3039 and has, until recently, made his living on Solaris VII. His Awesome has been refitted with a pair of Binary Laser Cannons acquired by his former stable master Basia Preobrazhenskaia. His Awesome is unique in that also mounts a trio of jump jets to increase its mobility in the arenas. With all three PPCs removed and the small laser being replaced by a medium pulse laser, the twin binary laser cannons now provide the major firepower. The third has been replaced by a trio of SRM4 launchers that share two tons of ammunition. Fifteen double heat sinks are barely enough to handle the load of the laser cannons. Armor protection is identical to the original model, but some armor has been shifted to the forward portions of the torso. An Anti-missile system kept enemy missiles away and is fed by a two-tom magazine. Once he left Solaris VII with the rest of his former stable, he saw that the long range weapons would be a handicap and he replaced the SRM4s with LRM5s.

Kowalski, being the enterprising capitalist that he is, offered the schematics of his 'Drop Bear' to Technicron and Irian Battlemechs. Eventaully, Irian Battlemechs ponied up with the most Eagles. IBMU made a few changes that resulted in a faster and more mobile plaform. The laser cannons were retained, of course, while a single LRM5 launcer and the AMS were removed while a small pulse laser has been added. Another pair of double heat sinks have also been added to handle the high heat of the binary lasers.

and watch the mech melt in the process. No thanks. I had to remove the missiles and jump jets, but here's what you get. While there's enough crit space for more DHS, there's no where to put them thanks to the 3-crit nature of IS DHS and only having two spaces open in any given location.

Yeah the 3 Blazer Awesome would be a beautiful hot mess.
Clantech is a no no Bradshaw plus I don't see a IIC with an XL Engine.
-
<snip> plus I don't see a IIC with an XL Engine.
Especially one that big or expensive.
-
Wasn't planning on entering it but XL on IIC and same tonnage.
https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Phoenix_Hawk_IIC
-
There are IICs with XL like the insanely expensive Phoenix Hawk but I ascribe to the bulk of the garrison forces being cheaper standard Fusion Engine equipped.
-
How about this for a garrison Awesome IIC? Use the amazing clan large pulse lasers, instead of ER PPCs.
Endo (4t), 240 engine (11.5t), gyro/cockpit (6t), armor (15.5t) = 37t
4x Clan Large Pulse Lasers (24t), Targeting Computer (5t) = 29t
+11x Double Heat Sinks (11t)
You still have 3 tons and 6 crits free for nonsense. I would probably include 3 jumpjets for additional mobility. Runs purely heat-neutral, and is just plain tougher -- and more accurate because of the Targeting Computers -- than the Rifleman IIC.
You could also run something punchy with real durability, using three ERPPCs and some Jihad-era tech, as such:
Structure (8t), 240 engine (11.5t), compact gyro/cockpit (7.5t), Ferro-Lamellor armor (17.5t) = 44.5t
3x ER PPCs (18t), Targeting Computer (4t) = 22t
+13x Double Heat Sinks (13t)
(spare 0.5t, spare ER Small laser?)
Finally, here's a very un-Clan like variant using nearly maximal hardened armor. Suuuuuper durable, but also WICKED slow:
Endo (4t), 240 engine (11.5t), gyro/cockpit (6t), Hardened armor (30.5t) = 52t
3x Large Pulse Lasers (18t), Targeting Computer (4t) = 22t
+6x Double Heat Sinks (6t)
Honestly I think I'd hate the last one most of all. Trying to grind through 488 pips of armor (effectively) on a Zombie Mech build that can reach out and touch you from 20 hexes away at a -3 to hit you? Good god.
-
As if battles already weren't long enough hardened armor is crazy

A one off variant of an older Project Phoenix prototype. This new Super Awesome prototype is able to take advantage of issues with its predecessor. The ability to now incorporate double heatsinks into its engine, the ability to take advantage of its excessive heat due to the dual blazer cannons with the newest variant of working Triple Strength Myomers giving it incredible speed boosts at times and devastating physical attack damage in close ranges. Used exclusively as a test bed for Team Banzai and NAIS experiments with new technologies this design does not appear to be considered for full production at any time in the near future.

3 Kreuss PPCs
2 Delta Dart LRM-10s
Manufacturer: Luthien Armor Works
Primary Factory: Luthien
Communications System: Garret T19-G
Targeting and Tracking System: Dynatec 2780
Overview:
Eager to build on their successes in refitting the Charger production lines 'inherited' from Wells Technologies, Luthien Armor Works decided to look at directing as many parts as possible into construction of a similarly sized assault design.
The Awesome was infamous as perhaps the most successful 80 ton BattleMech in history and close coordination with the Combine's government turned up a license reportedly granted by Technicron in the days of the Star League (Technicron's own records don't mention this license, causing some spirited discussion with between the governments on Luthien and Atreus. But since the DCMS needed 'Mechs, there was no question of ceasing development.
Capabilities:
The AWS-9K uses the same chassis and engine as most Awesomes, with the latter obtained from Nimakachi Fusion Products Limited (who already built it for use on their Spider light 'Mech). Conveniently, the armour was of the same type used on the Charger.
The principal update is a switch to using double heatsinks. The tonnage saved is dropped into fitting two modest LRM racks (Delta Darts that were commonly found on the Quickdraw) and two tons of ammunition. CASE storage reduces the danger posed by the munitions.
The loss of the small laser got complaints about lacking an anti-Elemental weapon, but LAW have pointed out that any Awesome pilot close enough for this to be a concern should be calling for help already.
Battle History:
While not yet having seen real action, drills have earned the AWS-9K respectable reviews for the heat management as long as one or both LRMs are held back.
Deployment:
Thus far the new Awesome has only appeared in LAW security and some militia units, replacing losses suffered in the defence of Luthien. Given the low cost, it is likely they will be marketed soon unless the legal wrangling becomes too much of an embarrassment. Some suggestion has been made to licensing the variant to Technicron in settlement of the current dispute.

4 Firmir Standard Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: McCarron’s Trading Company
Primary Factory: Menke (refits of the 9M)
Communications System: Garret T19-G
Targeting and Tracking System: Dynatec 2780
Overview:
Not everyone was pleased with the AWS-9M which seemed to lack the BattleMech's trademark durability. The fragility of the Extra Light Engine and its corresponding high cost were only outshined by the infamous SRM ammo storage in the BattleMech's left leg. Despite the design's issues House Liao was not in the position to be picky after its 4th Succession War calamities. The new Marik alliance made this refit widely available to the Capellan Confederation who really needed to maximize every Assault 'Mech it could. The outbreak of the 3rd Marik Civil War bought new opportunities for the realm specifically through the participation of McCarron's Armored Cavalry as Isis Marik's primary force. In search of a faster Assault Mech without ammunition concerns the mercenaries took a second look at the lostech Marik Awesome and started to add some new tech of their own.
Capabilities:
This new refit performed McCarron’s Trading Company on Menke was based directly on the 9M. The Marik lostech Awesome had its weaponry replaced entirely by lasers manufactured by Firmir Weaponry of Betelgeuse. Two arm mounted Firmir DualMax Binary Laser Cannons formed the core of this formidable field upgrade. These new double-barreled Large Lasers which first debuted on the HER-5LM Hermes II saw increasing use during the 3rd Marik Civil War. Despite their high waste heat which exceeds ER PPCs and their middling range Blazers possessed superior firepower able to behead any BattleMech with a single strike. To complement these hard hitters a single Firmir UltraLase Extended Range Large Laser mounted in the center torso along with four leg affixed Firmir Standard Medium Lasers. These secondary weapons are designed to fire in a bracket fashion with the ER Large engaging threats at long range while the Mediums dispatch any enemies at closer ranges.
In order to make this design possible the 9L features what maybe the most extensive cooling system ever before seen in the InnerSphere. This mass of Double Heat Sinks weighs more than the Pitban 320 Extra Light Engine which itself incorporates one dozen ‘freezers’. Two Double Heat Sinks each in the arms help directly cool the Blazers while three more are fitted within each side torso. These twenty-two Double Heat Sinks cools the Blazers and either the ER Large or the leg mounted Medium Lasers without factoring in movement. In order to fit all of these ‘freezers’ one ton of Durallex Heavy Special armor plating had to be stripped from the final product. While this results in slightly lower overall protection reconfiguring its locations has produced better center torso protection.
Deployment:
The overwhelming percentage of these new Liao Awesomes is located within McCarron’s Armored Cavalry. This is due in large part to Marik battlefield salvage which has provided some replacements to these Capellan mercenaries in service to Isis. Eventually other CCAF units will receive these newly upgraded ‘Mechs but the Chancellor has thus prioritized foreign combat operations over domestic refits. A lack of 320 XL Fusion Engines may prevent further refits eventually but the performance of this Assault ‘Mech may justify production of this lostech power plant within the Confederation eliminating such concerns. Of course, if Isis successfully ascends the Atrean throne this would also cease to become a problem.

I am breaking Awesome protocol with this one and using a ballistic weapon for my Urban Assault variant. A 4/6/4 mover with paired large pulsers and standard medium lasers in the arms. A small pulser in the head accounts for those nasty crunchies while an LB 10-X auto-cannon is the primary combat weapon. It has a three-ton ammo bin that can be loaded as desired (standard load is 2 tons of cluster and 1 ton of slugs). It is highly mobile in urban terrain with a quartet of jump jets borrowed from the locally produced Quickdraw. Armor is maxed out and of the ferro-fibrous variety. Fourteen freezers can handle the heat excepting a jumping alpha strike, of course.

Thought of a similar urban variant perhaps with just large pulse lasers perhaps. Wouldn't want to fight it in reduced ranges. Nice load out.

Overview
Alshain Weapons lost a lot during the Clan invasion and was only saved through the vast grants given by the Draconis Combine to keep its main supplier of the Panther operating.
However they knew something had to be done and this is why the company approached several potential partners requesting in exchange for a fee access to the blueprints from their heaviest ‘Mechs and the licence to retrofit them as they saw fit.
Only Irian Technologies agreed to the deal and even agreed to send all the research they had made on the Awesome for a sum that was never discarded.
Thanks to the data they had and a few prototype to test their ideas, Alshain Weapons quickly came up with the AWS-9NK, a Kuritan Awesome.
Capabilities
Deciding to keep what had always been at the core of the Awesome (firepower and protection) and at a reasonable cost (an indication that perhaps Alshain Weapons paid a lot to Irian Technologies), the first choice made was to keep the original speed, engine and armour, focusing first and foremost on the weapons.
The first step was to maximise the heat dissipation capacity and the Heat Sinks were converted to 18 Double ones, which allowed it to fire the 4 Lord’s Light PPC available from the surplus of the older Panther ‘Mech almost continuously.
Satisfied with that aspect, Alshain Weapons decided to go for something that would not take too much space (the Double Heat Sinks being quite demanding in terms of internal space) but still give the Awesome a distinctive Kuritan feeling. This is why a C3 Slave was added in the Head and accepting the proposal from Tanadi Computers a TAG was also added to allow for more firepower to be brought upon the Awesome opponents.
Instructed by the close quarters combats against hidden Elementals, the final step made was to use a Beagle Active Probe, allowing it to detect hidden units before they can open fire.
Combat History
So far the Awesome AWS-9NK only saw simulated combats where it was used as the anchor to the defensive lines of the DCMS allowing the lighter and more mobile units to strike by surprise on the flanks and rears of busy opponents. It remains to be seen how the Clans will react to this “dezgra” tactics.
Variants
A single variant was produced, switching the Beagle Active Probe for a Guardian ECM Suite but since it doesn’t work at longer ranges, this ‘Mech isn’t liked by the ‘MechWarriors of the DCMS and is only done on request.
Deployment
Due to its extra firepower, the DCMS tends to favour this retrofit and the Procurement Department issues regular requests for Alshain Weapons to retrofit an Awesome from a ‘MechWarrior “deserving it”. Apart from this limitation, the capacity of Alshain Weapons to retrofit them and the number of Awesome in the DCMS are the only limits in making their numbers bigger.
Notable ‘MechWarriors
Daima Jin is the name of a ‘Mech of the Izanagi Warriors that remains there in spite of having already changed several times of ‘MechWarrior. Usually each new member brings its own ‘Mech but the "Big Demon" (a 8Q) served so well in the Battle of Luthien that it was awarded the honour of staying on the unit roll and was upgraded to the 9NK standards.

Overview
Irian Technologies came up with the idea to upgrade the AWS-9M at the request of several pro-Marik stables that liked the design but wanted to have something that would better suit the Game World.
Always looking for good marketing opportunities, the company decided to dedicate some resources to this project and to make a cutting edge BattleMech that would serve as a test-bed for the TSM, something that they so far hadn’t used in any design and that suited Solaris VII.
Capabilities
Since TSM was at the core of the project, what was needed was the perfect combo to trigger its ignition and to keep it active during the whole fight.
Unwilling to focus on short-ranged weapons as most of its competitors, Irian Technologies made the unusual choice to focus on the middle to long range segment.
The first weapons used where some ER Large Lasers, one of the furthest reaching weapons of the Inner Sphere, designed to begin destroying the opponent while it is getting into range. This is when two Binary Laser Cannons designed by Magna Metals Inc. add their firepower to the first lasers, allowing the Awesome to oversaturate the 17 Double Heat Sinks and to trigger the TSM while keeping it active as long as it only fires the Binary Lasers.
Almost as a second thought and to keep it out of harm way, a Beagle Active Probe and a Guardian ECM Suite were added to both shield the ‘Mech at the closest range a fight happens on Solaris VII and allow it to detect hidden threads, a tactic favoured by several ‘MechWarriors in some arenas.
Combat History
Pictures of the first arena battles of the AWS-9S7 and its capacity to blast its way through any opponent in a mix of lasers and physical fury have been used by Irian Technologies to promote the ‘Mech. For now, the AWS-9S7 are winning match after match, indulging in fire as if it was a benediction.
Some matches have been won through the “walk in the fire” of the Awesome, making their opponent lose their nerves and forfeit. Will this be enough to win the Championship? Only time will tell.
Variants
Since it is such a specialised ‘Mech, no variant was even considered.
Deployment
Irian Technologies is eager to sell their newest toy but so far only Stables on Solaris VII have been interested.
However it is rumoured that several small mercenary units employed by the Free Worlds League are being supplied with this design and that they might be send sooner or later on some sort of secret mission for the League.
Notable ‘MechWarriors
Victoria Emmet, said to be the Master of Assassin of Brombley Stables, has been seen at the command of a AWS-9S7. However it is unknown if this is her official ‘Mech or if she just borrowed it.
