Optimizing the Banshee
« on: November 21, 2021, 10:25:31 PM »

Our second to last InnerSphere design optimization is the fifty-fourth of its kind and comes screaming in like a Banshee. I sort of look at this one as the slightly smaller but faster version of the Atlas. I do have to confess that the BNC-5S is one of my favorite designs from Technical Readout 3050 which I still enjoy using in my home campaigns. One of the earliest BattleMech designs debuting for the Terran Hegemony in 2445 just six years after the Mackie it has sure stuck around. Produced by three different manufacturers and in service for over six hundred years the Banshee just might be the heaviest most numerous BattleMech in existence. Plus, its original design was so poorly regarded that it was often relegated to reserve duty. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if Periphery Bandit Lords piloted these designs which should be all over the place. The Federated Commonwealth probably has the most Banshees in service right now but I really think you could find it all over. Thankfully we have a massive CBT Mech of the Week article and sarna’s wiki page for inspiration this time around. I’m really looking forward to seeing what you guys can come up with as the most optimal Banshee for the Salient Horizon universe, good luck!

Design Criteria
Design: Banshee Assault BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 95 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday December 3rd 2021 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

Banshee "Bradley"

Mass: 95 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E-A
Production Year: 3070
Cost: 13,379,178 C-Bills
Battle Value: 2,125

Chassis: Star League XT Standard
Power Plant: GM 380 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 43.2 km/h (54.0 km/h)
Maximum Speed: 64.8 km/h (86.4 km/h)
Jump Jets: None
    Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: Lexington Ltd. High Grade Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
    1 Lord's Light 2 ER PPC
    4 Defiance B3M Medium Lasers
    1  Hatchet
    1 Defiance B3S Small Laser
1 Tanadi Citizen C3 Computer (Slave)
Manufacturer: Arc-Royal MechWorks
    Primary Factory: Arc-Royal
Communications System: Angst Clear Channel 3
Targeting and Tracking System: Angst Clear View 2A

Overview:
Scott Bradley Junior, of the Kell Hounds, upgraded his Banshee to this model through the course of the Clan Invasion after it was damaged badly during both the fighting on Twycross and then Luthien. The same Banshee captured from DCMS Tai-sa Palmer Conti in 3029, the ancient assault chassis was refurbished with advanced technology into a ferocious close-combat machine.

Capabilities:
The first upgrade, following Twycross, was to fit Triple-Strength Myomers and replace the wrecked Imperator-A autocannon with four medium lasers and a hatchet. The purely energy armament made it very easy to super-heat the 'Mech - to the point that Double-Heatsinks were requested but couldn't be fitted before Hanse Davion requested that the Kell Hounds join forces with the DCMS on Luthien.

The Banshee barely walked off the battlefield of Luthien, with armour almost entirely destroyed, the Magna Hellstar PPC lost and the electronics overloaded by several hits by Clan PPCs. However, Bradley had also won the respect of the 1st Sword of Light, with many samurai having fought shoulder to shoulder with the mercenary officer during the chaotic final battle of Kado-Guchi Valley (perhaps mistaking the damaged red and black livery of the Kell Hounds for battle-damaged Sword of Light crimson). With the permission of Coordinator Takashi Kurita, Tai-sa Shigeru Yoshida,  formally presented Bradley with an advanced ER PPC and one of their cutting edge C3 systems, for use by his lance.

Fully refitted with fresh electronics developed for the 5S Banshee on Hesperus II, ferro-fibrous armour intended for Commandos and finally receiving the requested double-heatsinks, the "Banshee Bradley" is able to keep pace with most Clan heavy 'Mechs and inflict crushing close-range damage with its seven ton hatchet. While limited to a single extended-range weapon, Bradley can use his C3 systems to feed targeting data to his lance so they can support him with devastating effectiveness - picking off those 'Mechs able to stay out of his reach.

Deployment:
A few other Banshees within the Kell Hounds have been refitted on Arc-Royal to similar standards. The offer is open, parts permitting, to other AFFC and mercenary units in reach of the Kell Hounds' homeworld.

Variants:
With C3 systems still rare outside of the DCMS, some 'Mechwarriors opt for a TAG system instead. Similarly, Defiance 1001 PPCs are more available than the Lord's Light 2, and sync better with the targeting system.

Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:
Scott Bradley Junior is, of course, the most noted user of this Banshee variant. It's believed that he may succeed his father as commander of the Kell Hounds' second regiment in the near future.

The interesting thing is the 5S is just coming out now. So I guess this would be the 5S I think should have come out instead.

My personal philosophy for upgrades has always been "Dare to do the obvious thing!" if the obvious thing seems like a good idea in and of itself. In other words, don't be imaginative just for the sake of being imaginative when being unimaginative will yield results that are just as good or even better. Plus, it seems to me to be more plausible for a new upgrade to be green-lighted for full production if it follows the precedents set by previous ones.

BNC-5FC BANSHEE

Mass: 95 tons
Chassis: Foundation 210 EndoSteel
Power Plant: Edasich Motors 380 XL
Cruising Speed: 43 kph
Maximum Speed: 64 kph
Jump Jets: None
   Jump Capacity: None
Armor: Longanecker PlastiSteel with CASE
Armament:
1 Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifle
1 Defiance Disintegrator LB 10-X Autocannon
   1 Defiance 1001 Extended-Range Particle Projection Cannon
1 Cyclops XII Extended-Range Large Laser
Manufacturer: Defiance Industries
   Primary Factory: Hesperus II
Communications System: Angst Clear Channel 3
Targeting and Tracking System: Angst Clear View 2A

Overview:
This design more closely matches the image obtained by ComStar ROM agents in 3051 during the height of the Clan Invasion. Originally thought to be the 5S it was in actuality one of several Banshee prototypes built and tested by Defiance Industries of Hesperus II. An assault ‘Mech built for long-range engagements with solid speed to match heavier Clan opponents this variant has been described as a direct fire ‘Battlecruiser’ or ‘light heavy-weight’ approach. This all-big gun fast mover certainly has its advantages as well as some drawbacks but the AFFC seems to be a believer in this new Banshee.

Capabilities:
In order to achieve the lightest possible core mass Defiance equipped its newest Banshee with an EndoSteel chassis as well as a 380 Extra Light Engine. This enabled many upgrades including a second ton of Gauss ammo which was placed with its massive cannon in the distinctive barrel shaped left arm. Also, one of the two Defiance 1001 ER PPCs found on the 5S was replaced by a Cyclops XII ER Large Laser previously used on the ZEU-9S Zeus. This long reaching weapon located in the right arm was small enough to retain a hand actuator while the remaining ER PPC was placed in the left torso. All the secondary weaponry from the 5S like the SRM-6, four Medium Lasers, and the two Small Lasers was removed. In their place a Defiance Disintegrator LB 10-X Autocannon first used on HCT-5S Hatchetman was mounted in the Right Torso along with two tons of ammunition. To safeguard against catastrophic ammunition explosions a CASE was designed into that armored location. While fifteen tons of Longanecker PlastiSteel remains some rear armor protection has been reallocated to the arms which left the legs relatively less guarded. This lack of complete armoring is the major disadvantage to this Banshee variant but it was justified by its impressive long-range firepower and rapid movement rate for an Assault ‘Mech. Critics point out that this speed is only made possible thanks to the vulnerable XL Engine which can be more easily disabled thanks to its bulky nature. It also makes the BattleMech expensive in nature costing 3.4 million C-bills more than the 5S. However, a fifteenth Double Heat Sink was added to this massive power plant to assist in the dissipation of continuous long-range weapon fire which it does well. Only movement during an Alpha Strike will result in a slight overheating condition which is the whole point of this concept. Fully engaging opponents at five hundred and forty meters with four heavy weapons was considered worth it for the AFFC.

Deployment:
New production models of this type have been immediately dispatched to FedCom units serving along the Clan Occupation Zone in what remains of the Tamar March. Early reports indicate that it has performed well in limited actions and Mechwarriors seemed satisfied with its impressive capabilities. The ComGuards have also been impressed by this war machines potential and thanks to the new Martial Accords made official offers to purchase production runs from Hesperus in order to rebuild its forces. While kits to refit existing Banshee’s are also being made to maximize numbers as quickly as possible extensive modifications that would be required will slow its introduction in the near future to mainly new manufactured products.

Odin Manufacturing of Orestes is one of the largest construction and development companies in the Free Rasalhague Republic, with a proud history that predates the Star League.  As a sideline, the firm also produces military supplies, including (throughout the succession wars) the Puma PAT-005 Main Battle Tank, a lumbering fire-support vehicle with impressive levels of firepower.

Following the Clan Invasion, the remnants of the Kungsarme turned to firms like Odin to refit some of their surviving ‘Mech assets.  Although the firm lacked the capability to manufacture ‘Mechs, they had the entirety of their Puma assembly plant available to raid for components, and with the help of ComStar engineers, quickly worked up a number of refits, including for the venerable Banshee.  Due to its resilience and durability, quite a number of these Assault ‘Mechs had survived the Invasion, and Odin was tasked with upgrading both Kungsarme and Comguard units as quickly as possible.  As it turned out, that turn-around took less than a year, with the first of the BNC-5R refit/upgrades cycling into the field by the end of 3053.

The 5R is no more and no less than a Puma Main Battle Tank in Battlemech form.  It swaps out the 380-rated engine of the original Banshee for a Pitban 285, from their Puma line, slowing the Banshee to a modest 53 kph top speed.  Although the Star League XT standard-grade chassis is retained, Odin slathered on eighteen and a half tons of AmberStar Weave standard-grade armor, three and a half tons more than the BNC-3E, for the maximum effective protection available for a 95-ton assault ‘Mech.  The heavy armor protects the ‘Mech’s new guns – the anemic weapons array of the BNC-3E having been swapped for what is effectively the powerful weapons array of a Puma – with a few upgrades, courtesy of Comstar.

The main gun, mounted in the right torso, is a Blankenburg 200 ER PPC, which appears to have replaced the Donal PPC lines at Odin’s arms facility.  It provides fearsome bite at long ranges, but the twin Artemis IV fire-linked Holly LRM-20s in the left torso truly provide even more hitting power – and are the main threat of the Puma, as well.  Six tons of missiles sit in a CASE-protected ammunition bin in the right torso, just below the ER PPC mount.  A pair of Krieger Medium Lasers, one in each arm, provide secondary firepower, and a Skylight Model 5 flamer in the head weapons mount, to act in an anti-infantry (and fire-starter) capacity.  The BNC-5R technically forgoes the additional close-range bit of a Puma’s SRM-4 and small laser, but those were deemed acceptable trade-offs.  The ferocious heat generated is managed ably by the fourteen double-strength heat sinks installed in the ‘Mech, mostly venting out ports in the back shoulders.

This new Banshee upgrade is thus far proving quite popular with the units that have been receiving them, and Comstar is suspected to be pouring quite a lot of investment capital into the Clytemnestra region of Orestes, with major expansions of the arms facility clearly visible to on-lookers – entirely done in-house, by Odin’s construction branch, of course.

As part of an effort to rebuild the Magistracy Armed Forces following their disastrous showing in the Andurien Secession, Magestrix Emma Centrella heavily subsidized the nation’s armaments firms, with Magesty Metals and Manufacturing foremost among them.  The Dunianshire facility was ground zero for the MAF’s efforts to develop a Canopian-specific assault ‘Mech variant, based on upgrading the widespread (and, until the Clan Invasion, relatively low-cost) Banshee 95-ton ‘Mech.  Canopian merchants did much of the leg-work, scouring the Inner Sphere for cheap Assault ‘Mechs for their star realm, including the Banshee.

Work on creating an MAF-specific refit variant actually began prior to Emma Centralla’s ascendance to the Magestrix, but clearly has her fingerprints all over the design process.  The first variant produced, the 3MC, replaced the AC-5 of the 3E with a heavier AC-10, but sacrificed heat sinks in order to make the design work, causing the final variant to run a bit hot.  However, even with the greater hitting power, the ‘Mech still was somewhat underpowered, leading to the development of the 4MC variant, which first saw deployment in 3049, about a decade later.

The original 4MC model (now designated the 4MC1) stripped out the massive GM 380 engine entirely, instead fitting a modified Rawlings-schematic fusion engine with a lower 285 rating, and some of the excess shielding stripped out – the 300-rated variant had been manufactured for centuries for MMM’s Marauder lines.  Preserving the original Star League XT chassis, the MMM-Dunianshire refit includes three more tons of armor than the original, using a full eighteen tons of Maxmillian 43 weave from their Shadow Hawk line.  As part of its modifications, the Rawlings engine has double-strength heat baffles, with two additional double-strength heat-shunting vents in the left arm and shoulder assembly of the Banshee, for an effective strength of thirteen “freezers” of heat sinking.

The modifications turn the Banshee into a true Assault ‘Mech, with a lumbering 53kph speed and near-maximum effective armored protection.  Within that frame, MMM designers fit no less than two Pontiac 50 AC/10 autocannons, one in each of the original torso weapons mounts of the BNC chassis and fed by three tons of ammunition in the right torso, then added three Martell Large Lasers for additional firepower – one in the center torso, in line with the Pontiac 50s, and one mounted just below each massive Pontiac 50 autocannon barrel in each torso.  This variant Banshee has somewhat limited effective range, but is devastating against most opponents, particularly once it reaches middle-ranged brawling distances.

However, MMM-Dunianshire wasn’t done, as they released an upgraded 4MC2 just a few years later, in 3052.  This variant is nearly identical to the 4MC1, but swaps out the Pontiac 50s for a set of Mydron Excel LB 10-X Autocannons, which are apparently being sourced from Bithinia Ballistics of the Capellan Confederation, at least until MMM-Dunianshire develops the capability to manufacture their own.  This suggests a degree of friendly co-operation between the two stellar nations that is worrying some observers, even as the Third Marik Civil War heats up, and with both the Magistracy and Confederation close on the League’s borders.  Regardless of the politics, the LB 10-X are clearly superior to the older AC/10s in nearly every way, including weight reduction – the weight savings are plowed into an additional ton of ammunition (making four tons total for the two autocannons), and adding an additional double heat sink to make for an extremely cool-running ‘Mech.

Finally, in what might be one of the largest departures, a few variants of a third Canopian variant appears to have surfaced in a few units along the League border – this version has one less large gun barrel, but is peppered with Martel Medium Lasers in swivel-mounts on the “hips” and left arm.  The unofficial designation for this variant, the 4MCS, reflects the understanding that the “big gun” in the right torso is probably a Sniper Artillery Piece, with an effective range of 9km, and able to hit with the raw strength of an AC-20 at direct-fire ranges of just over 500 meters.  The artillery Banshee may be a reaction to the artillery-equipped Catapult in the Confederation arsenal, but regardless, artillery-supported MAF forces in more effectively optimized ‘Mechs are bound to be quite formidable, and avoid some of the mistakes of the recent past.

Following the devastation of the Clan Invasion, the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery scrambled to hastily rebuild their shattered forces.  Although many new ‘Mechs were clearly needed, the existing inventory of older ‘Mechs needed to be upgraded with advanced technology, and better able to face off against the still-extant Clan threat.

The DCMS had quite a number of Banshee BNC-3E assault ‘Mechs, either captured over centuries of conflict with their Lyran neighbors, or purchased from those same neighbors during periods of relative stalemate or ceasefire.  With decent but not terribly thick armor (only 82% of effective maximum protection for a 95-ton ‘Mech) and incredibly anemic, mid-ranged firepower, the Banshee was in dire need of a refit in order to make it more effective on the modern battlefield.  Yori Mech Works of Al Na’ir, manufacturer of both Atlases and Hatamoto class assault ‘Mechs, submitted a proposed facility refit that was quickly accepted, and the first upgraded Banshee BNC-4K models began rotating back to their regiments in the final months of 3053.

The BNC-4K replaces the heavy GM 380 fusion engine of the 3E variant, for a much more compact Pitban 280-rated fusion engine, imported from Independence Weaponry of Quentin – an engine rating that suggests that Independence is in the process of developing their own 95-ton assault ‘Mech.  The single heat sinks of the 3E are stripped out entirely, and replaced completely by double-strength heat baffles integral to the fusion engine (thus obviating the need for separate double-strength “freezers” – which remain in critically short supply in the post-Invasion Combine).  Finally, the entire ‘Mech trades out the fifteen tons of standard armor plating for sixteen tons of Durallex Ferro-Fibrous, also imported from Independence Weaponry (where it is used in their criminally unpopular Jagermech lines).

Yori also updated the electronics and control elements of their Banshee, stripping out the ancient Dalban systems (which in some cases have developed unusual glitches and “ghost echos” over the centuries) with the versatile and relatively ergonomic Colmax 90 comms and Garret D2j targeting systems from their Hatamoto lines.  This is combined with a high-tech Tanadi Coordinator C3 Master suite in the heavily armored left torso of the ‘Mech, giving the Dragon yet another durable and hard-hitting command node for their new C3 technology – all for a relatively modest twelve million or so C-bills in total value, or just about three million C-Bills in upgrade and refit costs per Banshee.

With this base chassis in place, the remaining weight (just over 40 tons) are used to massively up-scale the armaments of the BNC-4K.  Two Imperator “Dragon’s Fire” Gauss Rifles are fitted into the two torso weapon mounts of the Banshee, each fed by two tons of ammunition in the right and center torsos.  A Tiegart Maximum ER PPC is arranged higher in the right torso in a ‘shoulder’ mount, adding additional long-ranged firepower that is not ammunition dependent.  A Martell Medium Laser in the head mounting adds a modicum of close-ranged firepower and a backup weapon if the Gauss Rifle ammunition has run out.

However, Yori was not finished – they produce a second 4K variant (the 4K2) that is even more of a pure fire-support ‘Mech, with LRM-15 launchers in each arm and torso of the Banshee, each with an Artemis IV fire-control system.  The launchers are fed by eight tons of missiles in two CASE-protected bins; a six-ton bin in the right torso, and a two-ton bin in the right torso (fitted around the massive C3 Master control system).  Again, a Martell Medium Laser in the head mounting adds a modicum of close-ranged firepower and a backup weapon if the missiles are all fired.

This last variant may be a ‘field-test’ variant of the new ‘Mech being developed and tested by Independence Weaponry, which early reports describe as being a “Jagermech on steroids, with the firepower of a Longbow”.  (The ‘Mech in question, the Naginata NG-C3A with C3 Master system, was ultimately released in early 3055, supplementing the refitted Banshees of the Combine, which Yori had almost entirely upgraded by that date).

McCarron’s Trading Company was established on Menke shortly after the disastrous Fourth Succession War, in order to help rebuild the shattered McCarron’s Armored Company, and its primary objective remains to provide new technology and supplies to the Big Mac.  Throughout the 3040s, MTC Inc grabbed up a number of discount heavy and assault weight chassis (included scavenged components), and began developing several Big Mac “specials” – ‘Mech upgrades or refits that are intended primarily or exclusively for use by the regiments of the Armored Company.

Given the large surplus of Banshee BNC-3E assault ‘Mechs in the CCAF, and the poor reputation the ‘Mech had throughout the late Succession War, MTC ended up with quite a few of these ‘Mechs, and developed the BNC-4L as a low-cost Capellan upgrade for the Banshee, with MTC’s facility on Menke acting as the refit facility (and earning even more profits for the Company in the process).  The “Big Mac” Banshee retains most of the framework of the Banshee, including its Star League XT chassis, but sheathes the ‘Mech in eighteen tons of StarSlab-4 standard-grade armor, three more tons than standard in the 3E variant.  MTC also traded out the sixteen single heat sinks of the ‘Mech for a full fifteen double-strength “freezers”, with most of the sinks integrated into the 285-rated fusion engine.  Although a rare engine rating, StarCorps-Menke produces a VOX 280 fusion engine for their Warhammer lines, and MTC was able to readily upgrade the engine rating of the VOX engine, and add an additional half-tone of fusion shielding, to create a purely functional power system – and one that saves a great deal of tonnage for additional weapons systems.

The standard “Big Mac” Banshee BNC-4L is a versatile assault design that carries a mix of hard-hitting weapons systems.  Its primary weapon is a Mydron A Class-20 Autocannon, imported from Bithinia Ballistics, fitted into the Banshee’s right torso, and fed by three tons of CASE-protected ammunition.  Unusually, two tons of ammunition are in a hip-mounted ammunition bin, which are potentially crippling if the ‘Mech takes internal leg damage, but necessitated by the bulk of the Mydron A autocannon.  Two Ceres Arms Smasher PPCs (supplied by Ceres Metals on Menke) in the left torso add some long-ranged fire support, as well as a pair of Sian-Ceres Jaguar LRM-5s (also from Ceres-Menke), fed by a single ton of CASE-protected ammunition also in the left torso.  Three Martell Medium Lasers (sourced from the StarCorps facility also on Menke) add some close-ranged and backup firepower.

MTC’s alternative refit, however, is proving to be even more popular than the variant with the big AC/20 “Boom Stick”.  Given the relative lack of Awesomes in the Confederation, the BNC-4L2 is intended as a heavier, better armored, harder-hitting, and more versatile (at all ranges) Awesome.  Instead of heat-intensive ER PPCs, the 4L2 carries a quartet of Ceres Arms Smasher standard PPCs, with two mounted top-to-bottom in each torso of the Banshee.  No fewer than nineteen double heat sinks are crammed into the ‘Mech, with eleven integrated into the upgraded VOX 285 engine, and eight bulky heat exchangers venting out the back shoulders and rear torsos of the 4L2.  Finally, with the remaining tonnage and internal space, the 4L2 equips a total of eight Martell Medium Lasers, scattered across the arms, center torso, and even hips of the ‘Mech, resulting in no effective reduction in firepower even if opponents close to within the effective range of the PPCs.  Even with nineteen “freezers”, the 4L2 can easily overheat if its pilot does not carefully manage its heat load, but the ability to operate free of ammunition needs – and with its legendary durability enabling it to forgo regular maintenance for long periods of time – this 4L2 is ideal as a strategic raider.  It is already quite popular with pilots in McCarron’s Armored Company, especially after having seen some use in the Third Marik Civil War, and has even earned a catchy nickname: the “More Awesome”.

Type: BNC-4D Banshee

Armor Factor (std) 18t (288 pips)

Head 3/9
Center Torso 30/45/14
R/L Torso 20/30/10
R/L Arm 16/32
R/L Leg 20/38

Quirks: Rugged 1 (2x time between maintenance)

2x Arrow IV (30cr, 30t) 8RA/7RT/7LT/8LA
6x Ammo (Arrow) 30 (6cr, 6t) RT/LT
2x CASE (2cr, 1t) RT/LT
2x Medium Lasers (2cr, 2t) H/CT

With the former Davion half of the Federated Commonwealth having seen the value and impact of Arrow IV close artillery support, fielded in the Catapult design by both Confederation and Combine forces, forces in both the Capellan and Draconis marches have long agitated for the development of an AFFC specific Artillery ‘Mech.  Following the devastation of the Clan Invasion, the Commonwealth high command was finally willing to entertain proposals for an Arrow-IV equipped “artillery” ‘Mech design, and the winning proposal came from Valiant Systems on Robinson.

Valiant System’s refit and redesign of the BNC-3E, designated the BNC-4D, is quite ambitious for what was until this point a conventional vehicle manufacturer that specializes primarily in civilian hover cars.  However, they had connections to a number of more established Commonwealth firms, like Achernar and Robinson, and even had good relations with Scarborough Manufacturers in the Combine, from which they had licensed the Pegasus hovertank.  Using their industry ties, they acquired some surplus Vlar 300-rated engines from Robinson Standard BattleWorks, down-rating the engine to a 285 rating, and stripping a ton and a half of now surplus shielding from the engine to save additional weight.  Although this reduces the BNC-4D’s top speed to a modest 53kph, Valiant designers also installed a set of HildCo Model 12 jumpets into the rear torsos of the assault design, providing a 90m jump distance, and making their artillery ‘Mech quite nimble even in broken and urban terrain.

Given that the Dalban electronics of older Banshees struggle to handle the indirect-firing solutions required of the Arrow IV systems, Valiant also rewrote the firmware of their Wunderland XX-3 series electronics, originally used in their 35-ton Striker Light Tanks, to handle the communications and targeting needs of the 95-ton Assault ‘Mechs.  Valiant also stripped out any older armored plates from ‘Mechs, replacing it with eighteen tons of signature Valiant Lamellor – three more tons of protection than the classic BNC-3E variant.  All of the heat sinks have also been stripped out, and replaced by ten double-strength heat baffles, all of them integrated into the modified fusion engine.

With thirty-nine tons of free weight for armaments, Valiant installed their newly developed “Valiant Catapult” Arrow IV system, with one complete launcher system in each side torso and upper shoulder.  The Banshee’s bulky torsos proved ideal for fitting these systems, and unlike the Catapult, both lower arm and hand actuators could be retained, giving the BNC-4D a fair degree of versatility as a result.  Six tons of CASE-protected ammunition feed the launchers, with a three-ton bin in each side torso, enough for fifteen separate artillery strikes per launcher.  Finally, two Defiance B3M Medium Lasers provide a modicum of backup firepower in a pinch, mounted center-line in the head and center torso of the ‘Mech.

Although Valiant Systems is still in the late testing and shakedown stage of their refit and development, orders have already flooded in from AFFS regiments throughout the Commonwealth, happy to find a use for older (and thoroughly mediocre) BNC-3E designs, but unwilling to pay the high cost of the Defiance Industries BNC-5S upgrade, which utilizes an extremely pricey XL fusion engine – costing roughly 15 million C-Bills for the upgrade, compared to the Valiant Systems offering which comes in at well below a million C-bills for the refit.  For their part, Defiance Industries chooses to ignore the newfound popularity of Valiant Systems’ Banshee BNC-4D, seeing it as nothing more than a flash in the pan, and not a threat to their bottom line or corporate reputation.
