Title: Optimizing the Blackjack
Post by: Takiro on May 25, 2020, 01:23:23 PM
Looks like I am thirteen hours late with this one thinking its still Sunday.  ::)

For contest number nineteen I’d like to welcome our designers at long last to our forty-five tonners starting with the Blackjack. Maligned as it may have been in some sort of political or corporate smear campaign this BattleMech actually seems pretty good. I will admit that it is not one that I usually use in my campaigns but I am looking forward to see what our designers can do with the Blackjack for the Salient Horizon setting. Unfortunately, I could not find a Mech of the Week Article on CBT about the Blackjack but there is always sarna!

Optimal Design Thoughts on the Blackjack

Role. Originally designed as a medium fire support ‘Mech with insurgency suppression capabilities for the SLDF. I would call the Blackjack a slow moving but mobile harasser with close range punch.

Factories. 2 [1]

[DESTROYED] General Motors (Kathil)
Production of this BattleMech began here in 2757 but it is unclear how many units were made in light of all the bad press it received. No one lost any sleep when this manufacturing line was destroyed by the Capellans during the 1st Succession War in 2796. Presumably all models that fought throughout most of the Succession War were made during this thirty-nine-year span.

Ceres Metals Industries (St. Ives)
The BJ-3 was original built by the Capellan Confederation here sometime during the 4th Succession War and soon thereafter fell into the hands of the St. Ives Compact. Apparently continuing to produce this model all the time it is likely the source of all new Blackjacks right up to the Clan Invasion. Likely a good source of income for the Compact who have a friendly nearby market in the Federated Suns as well as becoming the workhorse for their military going forward.

General Motors (Talcott)
Apparently refit kits and limited production for the BJ-2 began here in early 3052 but full production did not apparently restart for the Davions until 3054 just after the publication of Objective Raids. This new facility will likely play heavily into our contest here and should be interesting to see what becomes of it going forward.

Internal Structure. False claims that the GM BJ-1 had narrow footpads which hampered mobility and stability aside this chassis seems to be very solid. Both the St. Ives and Talcott factories appear to have an EndoSteel foundry for the production of a lighter weight advanced lostech chassis but neither appeared to utilize it in canon but I’d say it is certainly a possibility.

Engine. The GM 180 Fusion Engine is one of those rare power plants made by the BattleMech’s actual manufacturer making it a real single company project. Where the 40-ton designs made a lot of sense to optimize at 5/8 speed, because their 200 rated engines maxed out the abilities of a two-ton gyro, the Blackjack and its 45-ton brethren are a different story. To go 5/8 you'd need a 225 engine requiring a 3 ton gyro and if you are going to go there why not just go 6/9 with a 270?? Personally, I think 4/6 is a Heavy Mech speed while Mediums should go 5/8. That being said a step slow isn't horrible I guess but against the Clans can you really afford to be a slow Medium?

Jump Jets.  Four Whitworth Jetlifts mounted in either legs give the Blackjack the ability to jump 120 meters at a time. These components appear to be the same as the Whitworth which is a surprise to me and may assist in the production of that Mech as well.

Heat Sinks. The original BJ-1 featured 11 Single Heat Sinks which were upgraded to Double Heat Sinks for the lostech BJ-2. With the relatively small 180 Fusion Engine only 7 Heat Sinks can currently be mounted integrally meaning at least 3 most be placed elsewhere on the BattleMech. This somewhat limits the amount of firing and maneuvering that this war machine can do at once especially because it traditionally has jump jets as well as a couple of energy weapons. In fact, both models are bracket firing machines which have to alternate long and short-range weapons or face overheating conditions.

Cockpit & Gyro. Nothing much can be done with the 3-ton Cockpit at this time but the 2-ton Gyroscope could be replaced for a larger one depending on the type of engine used in the design. The 180 power plant as I commented in the engine section keeps the gyroscope small while any attempt to increase its speed must also be meet with a corresponding increase in gyroscopic weight.

Armor. Claims that the StarGuard II armor plating was brittle and tended to fall off seem to be fake news if I can steal a modern-day pejorative. Despite these claims most Blackjack models carry about 89% of maximum armor protection (153 max) thanks to eight and half tons of standard plating. Nine and a half tons of standard armor (152 factor) or eight and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) would provide the most complete defensive rating this forty-five-ton BattleMech could hope to possess.

Weapons & Equipment. The Blackjack employs a mixed bag of ballistic or missile weapons in conjunction with lasers. The BJ-1 uses two arm-mounted Autocannon/2s fed by a single ton of ammo (22 rounds of continuous fire available) for long range engagements while four Medium Lasers take care of any close quarters opposition. The BJ-2 flips that arrangement replacing the large ballistic cannons with ER Larges while the Medium Lasers themselves are swapped out for four Streak SRM-2s fed by a single ton of ammo for a dozen rounds of lock and fire shots. I should note that the Capellan, now St. Ives, model the BJ-3 goes full energy arsenal substituting the AC/2s for PPCs which adds a lot of long-range firepower.

Design Criteria
Design: Blackjack Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 45 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy.
Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Deployment
Seems like the Federated Suns was the one Great House who truly valued the Blackjack as Davion Techs worked to keep it operational throughout the Succession Wars until the Battle for Xhosa VII in 3022. Its performance here made several in the AFFS including Hanse Davion take notice and it has gone from service in March Militias to duty with the Deneb Light Cavalry and the Crucis Lancers.
The St. Ives Compact became the second biggest user of the Blackjack after the 4th Succession War when it broke away from the Capellan Confederation or at least what was left of it. Combat losses and this treasonous act may have tainted the ‘Mechs image in House Liao’s eyes. Previously it was the Confederation which had been the second employer of the Blackjack but now they may even try to off load it to others (Isis or Canopians?). Still this Mech’s importance to the St. Ives Military Command (SIMC) should not be overlooked.
If a could pitch a third outside option perhaps just for Salient Horizon if you wish? What about the Lyran Commonwealth?? Certainly, their ties to the Federated Suns might just help proliferate the Blackjack to House Steiner. Second, the German name (Totschlager TG-1) was adopted for the Blackjack’s designation in German language so I thought another possible connection there. Finally, there is the Blackjack system itself which fell to Jade Falcon during the Clan Invasion and could serve as a sort of rallying call for liberation especially in light of the FedCom Alliance. The razing of the Blackjack School of Conflict by Steel Viper in 3052 could also be another powerful motivator for a group armed with this Mech.

Quirky Design
The Bad Reputation that the Blackjack supposedly had due to erroneous balance issues and faulty armor kills its resale value according to the letter of the quirk. I wonder if this ‘Mech took another hit to its image when the St Ives Compact broke away from the Capellan Confederation. Previously it had been the other Great House which utilized the Blackjack maybe because it couldn’t afford to be choosy due to its deprived circumstances. After the secession of St. Ives it seems to have been reviled at least until the Compact’s reunification. I just wonder if the sight of this Mech could provoke an unhinged response from Liaoists at this time adding to its poor rep.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday June 5th, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

The BJ-2A and BJ-2B were designed in response to feedback from the Mechwarriors about the BJ-2. While they appreciated the heavier punch of the twin Diverse Optics Sunbeam Lasers, they had 2 complaints about the design.  The first was that the cooling system, while improved, was not adequate for the high heat output of the Extended Range Lasers.  The second was that the while the AC ammo was removed, eliminating the risk of an ammo explosion, that benefit was negated by the addition of the Hovertec Streaks and their missile.

As General Motors is currently constructing a facility on Talcott to build the Blackjack, the company took the criticism very seriously.  Several studies were conducted testing various configurations.   Ultimately two prototypes were built to test two slightly different configurations.  Both of these are currently undergoing testing at the Kathil Proving Grounds to determine which model will enter production when the new line begins production on Talcott in the next year or 2.

Both designs share a common weapons array.  Retaining the Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER lasers of the BJ-2, they retain the 4 Intek Medium Lasers of the BJ-1. This provides the mech with a heavy punch that does not rely on ammunition.

The difference between the 2 mechs revolves around the age old question of armor versus speed, a debate that has been going back to the early days of tank design on Terra.

The BJ-2A features heavier armor, mounting 8 and half tons of StarGuard Ferro-Fibrous Armor.  This provides improved armor protection to the arms, legs and side torsos.  The design also adds 3 additional Double Heatsinks, greatly improving the cooling capability of the mech.

The BJ-2B retains the standard armor plating (however they did change to the latest StarGuard III composite rather then the Blackjacks original StarGuard II due availability issues), and instead upgrades the old GM 180 engine to an Extralight 225 engine.  The GM 225XL was developed for an aerospace fighter project which was canceled in the wake of the Clan Invasion.  GM chose to repurpose the engine for use on the Blackjack.  This increased the speed Blackjack, but prevented the use of Ferro-Fibrous armor, as the extra bulk of the engine took up much of the volume in the mech.  However the engineers were able to squeeze in an additional heatsink, giving the BJ-2B a superior cooling system compared to that of the BJ-2A.

Many of the other changes to the mech were made to simplify production. The old Whitworth Jetlift jump jets were replaced with new 100AFVTA models.  These are apparently being produced for a new mech that is under development at GM's Kathil plant.  Similarly the old Dalban AQ targeting system has been replaced with the more modern Dalban HiRez targeting system.

The Blackjack-2AC us a fairly simple upgrade of the BJ-1 that switches the engine over to the new 180XL. The armor is upgraded to ferro-fibrous and adds CASE protection. All four of the medium lasers have been retained while a Streak SRM2 has been added along with an additional ton of autocannon ammunition. Armor protection is now near the maximum capable of the frame.

The Blackjack and Whitworth are a recent project, especially since the Blackjack got me to Tier 4 in MWO.

Blackjack BJ-1B

Seeking to find some use for the much-maligned Blackjack, Blouschitz Enterprises turned to the latest technology to reach the military-industrial complex in an effort to turn a profit.  Saddled with sub-par speed, armor, and weaponry to fight the Clans and the growing preference for Kallon Industries’ C3-linked Partisan heavy tank for the AA role, the thousands of existing units scattered across the F-C were going for reduced prices and low rates as the nobility and AFFC tried to abandon the design in favor of newer, more effective designs.

Identifying artillery as among the few roles the Blackjack might be suitable for, BE armed the BJ-1A with a massive Arrow IV launcher, and ten rounds of ammunition with a single Medium laser as a back-up weapon.

The upgraded ‘Mech raised a few eyebrows when announced to great fanfare by BE, making them an overnight sensation on the comedy circuit of New Avalon, as comedians hastened to draw comparisons to the even more disdained UrbanMech.

Stung by the refusal to consider their premiere design, BE senior management and shareholders demanded engineers go back to the drawing board and re-work their initial design.  Frustrated engineers quickly pointed out management’s refusal to approve the newly reinvented EndoSteel internal structure of their original proposal, allowing the Blackjack to carry twice the ammunition.

Despite the false-start of the BE Marketing team, the AFFC Department of the Quartermaster approved the BJ-1B conversion program based on the possibility of the NAIS’ Top-Secret L-I weapons development program being an effective defense to the longer-ranged Clan energy weapons.

The eventual failure of the program had little effect on BE’s business, the conversion program remaining a money-making proposition as the existing owners of the Blackjack found the prospect of upgrading rather than becoming Dispossessed a more economical option.

Hmm.  Can I submit a 3060 design as an eventual upgrade of my BJ-1B in new production?  The CASE can't be retrofit, can it?  I call it the Rifleman II - twin LAC/5, L-PPC, and ER-ML.  I originally did it on the Whitworth chassis, but it was out the contest parameters.

*edit - It was easier than I thought.  .5 heavier armor, and a HS.  Cool.  Here it is.  Just sayin'...

An interesting take Red Pins and certainly out of the box.

As for the advanced tech entry it would ultimately disqualified but I can give you a few comments on it during the review.

Really with Level 1 or 3050 tech? Hard to do, no?

I have an idea which may get fleshed out over the weekend for a high end level 2 (XL Engine plus) which is kind of a split the arsenal (half energy-half ballistic) main guns concept.

The BJ-4D is another design being developed by General Motors.  While the BJ-2A/B were designed to improve many of the experimental models that were developed in the 3020s, the BJ-4D takes a different approach and looks to create a mech that meets the original specifications for the mech, which called for a "medium BattleMech with insurgency-suppression and fire support capabilities."  The Whirlwind-L Autocannons proved only moderately successful in the fie support role, the light rounds of the guns were simply ineffective against heavily armored mechs.

After several failed experiments it was realized that there would have to be major changes made to the Blackjack in order for it to fulfill the fire support role.  The BJ-4D features a new endo steel frame and Edasich Motors 180XL engine to save mass for other improvements.  The old Whirlwind-L autocannons have been replaced with the GM Nova-5 Ultra Autocannons. Not only does the Nova-5 have a slug that hasapproximately 150% more penetration capability compared to the older Whirlwind-L it is able to fire 2 rounds at a time greatly increasing the damage curve of the Blackjack.  Due to the high ammo consumption, the Blackjack carries 2 tons of ammo for each cannon.  The ammo bays are protected by CASE systems.

Much of the secondary weaponry has been removed to save space.  Of the 4 lasers carried by the BJ-1 only 1 remains.  The designers also removed a single jump jet.

Anxiously waiting for those ideas Ice, one week left to go! Here is one of two concepts I have for the Blackjack. Both are rather high end. Hope you enjoy!

BJ-2S BLACKJACK

Mass: 45 tons
Chassis: GM BJ-2 EndoSteel
Power Plant: Edasich Motors 180 XL
   Cruising Speed: 43 kph
   Maximum Speed: 65 kph
Jump Jets: Whitworth Jetlift
   Jump Capacity: 120 meters
Armor: StarGuard II
Armament:
1 Defiance Disintegrator LB 10-X Autocannon
   1 Maxell Large Pulse Laser
   2 Intek Medium Lasers
   2 Defiance B3S Small Lasers
Manufacturer: General Motors
   Primary Factory: Freedom
Communication System: Dalban Micronics
Targeting & Tracking System: Dalban AQ

Overview:
The Clan Invasion was a mighty blow to the pride of once nigh invincible Federated Commonwealth. The alliance’s glory days seemed well behind it as the juggernaut that was Kerensky’s descendants blitzed through the Tamar March absorbing some sixty-seven star systems. One of those systems, Blackjack, was home to a rather unorthodox military academy named the School of Conflict. Its colorful graduates included native General Charles Rhodes who was displaced by the conquest and returned home to take charge of the planetary militia. Using his innumerable contacts within the AFFC he began gathering those who very much like him wanted to return to Blackjack and worlds surrounding it one day to eject the Clans. Rhodes realized they would need further industrial backing to succeed in building such a Freedom Legion to liberate these occupied worlds. Thankfully for them General Motors was also looking to expand its facilities into the Lyran half of the Federated Commonwealth and a deal was struck. GM would establish a new high-tech factory on world for a new upgraded version of their flagship product which had special meaning to his assembling formation. Thus, was born the BJ-2S Blackjack.

Capabilities:
General Motors was able to use EndoSteel and two Defiance B3S Small Lasers manufactured for the WSP-1S Wasp made on Furillo for its new Blackjack. GM is making do with this imported advanced structure while a new EndoSteel foundry is being constructed in the Freedom star system. The Edasich Motors 180 XL Engine used on the HCT-5S Hatchetman is also imported as is the Defiance Disintegrator LB 10-X Autocannon. Together with the Maxell Large Pulse Laser used on the upgraded Chippewa Aerospace Fighter made on Chukchi III these twin big guns provide the BJ-2S with its main firepower. These weapons are quite accurate and can be devastating at close quarters especially to conventional forces and Battlearmor. Two Intek Medium Lasers from the original BJ-1 model supplement this mid-range firepower which combined with the Small Lasers at point blank ranges give the Blackjack a solid arsenal. Ten Double Heat Sinks can dissipate these Alpha Strikes but movement can send the BattleMech overheat so careful management has to be kept. Nine tons of StarGuard II armor plating provide improved protection from its predecessors which also use four Whitworth Jetlift jump jets to give the Blackjacks their trademark mobility.

Deployment:
Production has been slowed by the lack of pre-existing construction facilities on Freedom but thanks to partnerships with Defiance Industries, who is likewise trying to expand into the Davion half of the Federated Commonwealth, the first models have already reached the Freedom Militia. The new GM assembly plant on world has been skillfully bringing together components shipped from Furillo, Edasich, Hesperus, Chukchi III, and even far away Talcott. Production should steadily increase as on-site component plants come on line until one day everything on the BJ-2S will be made on Freedom. Many units are anxiously awaiting reports of the BJ-2S whose loadout looks like it will be one hell of an Elemental hunter in the days to come. Inquiries have been made by the Tamar March Militias, the Crucis Lancers, as well as other AFFC regiments deployed along the Clan front. Some closed minded Lyran traditionalists have already dismissed the Blackjack as a flawed Davion concept but that has done little to dampen its reception on Freedom.

BJ-2D BLACKJACK

Mass: 45 tons
Chassis: GM BJ-2 EndoSteel
Power Plant: Edasich Motors 180 XL
Cruising Speed: 43 kph
Maximum Speed: 65 kph
Jump Jets: Whitworth Jetlift

Manufacturer: General Motors

Targeting & Tracking System: Dalban AQ

Overview:
Davion techs continual efforts to fiddle with their favorite Blackjack project of the month has drawn praise from General Motors executives keen on improving their flagship product. To this end they have directed their designers to keep an eye out for any promising new variants which might be better than their BJ-2 lostech upgrade currently being manufactured at their new Talcott facility. With countless customized Blackjacks in AFFC service featuring advanced technology in response to the Clan Invasion theirs is a truly daunting task. One such testbed model dubbed the BJ-2D under development at NAIS on New Avalon has grabbed the attention of many including Team Banzai. Aiming to maximize the BattleMech’s performance they have engineered this high-end variant to optimize the Blackjack.

Capabilities:
By utilizing a newly fabricated GM BJ-2 EndoSteel chassis and the Edasich Motors 180 XL Engine researchers at NAIS were able to replace the original twin Whirlwind-L Autocannons with two General Motors Nova-5 Autocannons. First utilized by the WVR-7D Wolverine these advanced rapid firing guns developed during the Star League and recently recovered add new firepower at long range for the Blackjack. Retaining the original four Intek Medium Lasers and replacing the Heat Sinks with new ‘freezers’ able to dissipate double the waste heat has vastly improved the ‘Mech’s rate of fire. If a BJ-2D Mechwarrior wanted to repeatedly Alpha Strike and jump there is no chance of overheating even when continuously double firing the Autocannons. While this could rapidly dissipate the two tons of Ultra Autocannon ammunition carried by the design this increased firepower is considered by many worth the risk. Armor already had to be slightly reduced by a half a ton to incorporate the second full ton of ammo so there was no room for any additional without sacrificing the Medium Lasers or Jump Jets. The same can be said as to why this experimental model lacks a CASE.

Deployment:
Still very much in the testing phase the BJ-2D continues to undergo field tests by the NAIS Cadet Cadre who have been impressed by its improved striking power. Concerns remain however regarding the Ultra AC/5s tendency to jam when repeatedly ‘double fired’. Still most reviews are positive when it comes to this new Blackjack possibility.

Blackjack BJ-C (Conjectural)

Overview
The arrival of the Clans brought massive change to the armies of the Inner Sphere – among those, the most jarring was considered to be the armored infantry that accompanied them.  The armored suits were small, but their durability and mobility brought fear into the cockpits of even the most dangerous Heavy and Assault ‘Mechs of the AFFC and DC.  In order to safeguard these valuable units at close quarters on the battlefield, tacticians, military planners, and engineers concluded a ‘bodyguard’ able to engage these ‘Elementals’ was vital.
Compiling a list of specifications that included a top speed of roughly 65 kph, heavy armor, and enough energy-based weapons to quickly decimate an attacker, repeatedly, several options were considered before Blouschitz Enterprises proposed a conjectural variant of the Blackjack being renovated at BE’s facilities in the Federated Commonwealth near the front lines.

Capabilities
Having learned the necessity of paying close attention to requirements, CEO and major stockholder Manfred A. Blouschitz insisted none of the specifications were to be skipped, resulting in a disorderly collection of equipment dumped on the floor of the makeshift ‘Mech hanger until they could be shoehorned into the prototype.
Hastily stripped to the frame and kept as mechanically simple as possible, the cavernous Internal Structure of the Blackjack was gutted of its original weapons in favor of a heavy energy battery of Medium Lasers.  Cooling capacity proved the Achilles heel of the design, forcing engineers to reduce offensive potential to accommodate the limited numbers of the new ‘Freezers’ that quickly filled the available space and choked out the remaining equipment specified by the AFFC Department of the Quartermaster.
Equipment not in common use among the several variants of Blackjacks converted by BE was left out of the prototype, with appropriate mass and space left vacant, until a sample could be obtained by the company.  This piecemeal method of development found the design changing several times a day, as time began to run out for engineers to finalize which equipment would find its way into the design.  According to a formal submission to the Quartermaster by BE, the design incorporated advanced electronics in the form of a Beagle AP to locate concealed enemy units lurking in ambush before bringing the heavy laser battery of eight Defiance B3M Medium lasers to bear.  Aware of the need to avoid becoming heavily engaged, the 120 m Jump capacity and twin AMS kept the Blackjack from getting too close to the enemy.
Anti-personnel pods offered a quick defense against troops the Mechwarrior failed to prevent from closing, with the nine and a half tons of standard armor providing the maximum amount of armor in case the last-ditch defense was called into play.
Aware the Blackjack would need to offer a defense to these ‘Elementals’ in open-field situations outside the range of its main weapons, a single LRM-5 assigned to carry the new ‘Thunder’ FASCAM munitions was provided, with engineers forced to provide a prototype with the appropriate mass and space required for Cellular Ammunition Storage and the C3 Slave to enhance accuracy at long range manufactured by the DC left carefully empty.
As Quartermaster inspectors and technicians examined the Blackjack with a jaundiced eye, BE executives decided to hedge their bets by approaching the DCMS with the design, to be politely rebuffed.  (In hindsight, Procurement officials aware of the rushed development of the Komodo by LAW would have refused to purchase the design regardless, as no production facilities for the Blackjack existed to produce the numbers required by the DCMS in Combine space.)
The eventual decision not to adopt a specific anti-Elemental design had severe consequences for BE; the expense of holding up contracted work on converting the various Blackjack variants to the -1B standard in favor of pursuing a contract with the AFFC and licencing the design to manufacturers across the FC caused cash-flow problems which led to a hostile takeover of the company by creditors before BE’s successful Blackjack conversion line was acquired and shut down permanently by Defiance Industries.

*Yes, most of the lasers are mounted in the torsos – given this thing is meant to chaperone Heavy and Assault units, its not inconceivable that it could be in the crosshairs of units that would absolutely dominate the BJ-C.  Keeping them in the torso and relying on keeping the enemy battlearmor in the front arc was a small price to pay for not losing them with the 15th point of potential damage, keeping them in the field longer to boot.

You’ll notice also the expensive electronics are kept in the CT and Head respectively – as long as those get back, you can rebuild the ‘Mech around them.  These two items add up to 652,500 C Bills – about 15% of the cost of the ‘Mech – and are much rarer than a ML, LRM-5, HS(x2), or AMS.

I wanted to cram a Flamer on there too, for starting fires, but they were just too heavy at a full ton apiece.

And, its a ZOMBIE!  You're Wel-Come!   8)

There isn't much a 4/6 low-end Medium can really do - artillery and bodyguard kinda top the list for me, unless you want me to dip into my AU tech.  I was going to do something with a Mace (an actual 'blackjack'), but it's hard to make an urban ambushed that traditionally doesn't have hand actuators.

The next two new Blackjacks come from the design bureaus of Defiance Industries. The first comes from the facility on Furillo and is meant to be an Elemental hunter/killer. It is armed with a pair each of flamers and pulse laser (both large and medium). Tactical movement remains the same as the original Blackjack. it is now protected by 9.5 tons of standard armor and has eleven heat sinks to help mitigate heat buildup.

About: GM Blackjack Retrofit Factory

Sir,

I know you will find this report quite long but some troublesome facts were brought to my attention.

With all due respect, I still have troubles dealing with the way the Lyran half of the Federated Commonwealth gets things done.
For example, money gives you so much power in their system, including in the military before we founded the Federated Commonwealth. I know that money isn’t a bad thing, after all “If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to.” but this Blackjack School of Conflict is something else and is playing in a different league.

It produced good soldiers, no doubt about and even the Jade Falcons that went against their training battalion in the 4th wave of their invasion recognise it. This recognition is probably why the Steel Vipers having earned the planet through a Trial decided to raze the School.

And this is where money comes in. You know that everyone could get access to this School through a “decent” tuition fee? Well, it seems that a kind of old alumni network was created after the Clans invaded Blackjack and they put together money to officially “help the Federated Commonwealth to get free of the Clans”.
This sounds promising and like a lot of organisations out there, isn’t it?
However, instead of buying war bonds or funding new factories or whatever else most people do (I admit that for the factories things, only really rich ones can do it), they decided to approach several ‘Mech producing companies, requesting for their use a specific design aimed at (I quote from the specifics they sent) “slaying the Clans, giving us a Totschläger to deal with them.“
I am ashamed to say that they received answers to this completely illegal request (you know what our orders are regarding private armies).

It seems that the one that caught their eyes was a proposal by General Motors to design several new Blackjacks (another name for a Totschläger) in their refit factory on Talcott (the same one used also for the Whitworth). It seems that since the AFFC or the SIMC are not too keen on retrofitting more Blackjacks or on really using them, General Motors tried to find a way to make for its investments in this brand new installation.
Another interesting thing for them was that GM not only proposed them 1 Totschläger but 7 of them, with one being obviously targeted at the Kuritan market with the inclusion of a C3 Master and another being perhaps targeted at exports on backwater worlds or in the Periphery.

Here is what we could find on the different designs.
First of all, they are basic variations over the BJ-2 featuring a classical GM 180 Engine with only 10 Double Heat Sinks (instead of the 11 of the BJ-2) and still jumping 120 meters. The first improvement is the use of StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous armour with depending on the models 8 or 8.5 tons (the ones with ballistic weapons carry a CASE and pack only 8 tons of armour), which is still nearly the maximal this chassis can bear.
As a side-note, I would like to point out that apart for the C3 Master, every single item in the TG-2 series comes of the Davion half of the realm. We don‘t know if this was requested by the “clients” or was a deliberate choice by General Motors.

The first prototype, the TG-2, is just an upgrade of the classical BJ-1 and packs two Large Lasers with an impressive 6 Medium ones and to deal with the armoured infantry favoured by the Clans 2 Small Pulse Lasers. It can’t obviously fire all its weapons at once but a good ‘MechWarrior should be able to select the optimal weapons at each range.

The TG-2AG, AG standing according to some internal memos we got our hand on for Aerospace Grounder, is geared towards dealing with Aerospace Fighters but can deal with other targets too and even provides some fire support for its unit. With 3 LRM-5 and a TAG, it can be more than a nuisance, preventing opponents to get too close to it. As a finishing touch, it packs a Magan 900P Large Pulse Laser, known for its accuracy and 2 Medium Lasers.

The TG-2EW is the electronic warfare design. With a Guardian ECM, a Beagle Active Probe and a TAG, it can play several roles, including being used as a bodyguard for bigger and meaner ‘Mechs. Thanks to the use of advanced technologies, it can pack 2 Large Lasers and 4 Medium Lasers. This choice of older weapons and not so potent ones is probably due to the need to keep heat under control and to avoid the combat temptation for its ‘MechWarrior.

The TG-2HP or High Power has a real Davion flavour to it and is really straightforward packing a LB 10-X with 2 tons of ammo and 5 Medium Lasers to deal with those closing in.

The TG-2GW, GW standing for God of War, brings the power of an Arrow IV system to a rather light chassis. Even if it packs 2 tons of ammo, the TG-2GW will need supplies near it. 2 Small Lasers give it some back-up firepower should anyone try to engage it.

The last two blueprints seems to be made for exportation.
The TG-2K has a rare C3 Master into it, allowing it to be the centre of a C3 Lance. Two Large Lasers and 6 Small ones allows it to cut any opponent to pieces as they close in.
The TG-2E (E for Export?) has 2 Whirlwind L with two tons of ammo and 4 Medium Lasers, making it a safer version of the classical BJ-1.

Now it remains to be seen what are the plans of these people as except the TG-2K, all these Blackjacks are able to support regular forces or to be a part of a pure ‘Mech forces.
The production capacity of GM remains unknown as well as the capacity of the “old alumni network” to fund them. So far, a little over one company has been produced with a mix of the different versions (save for the 2K and the 2E).

According to intel I got from the LIC, it seems the services of the Archon are receiving request upon request to launch Operation Luft, which seems to be a number of deep raids by “rogue” mercenary units against Clan territory. Is there a link between both? So far we don’t know.

I think we should act quickly as someone is likely to create a private army and perhaps set a private war loose, a thing we can’t hardly afford right now.

The early 3050s is a time of developing Clan technology for the InnerSphere who is still trying to understand some of it's simple concepts. Except for unique individuals (Victor, Hohiro, and Kai) and the Wolf Dragoons such equipment will not be possible. So, no.

There is a list of available equipment on page 1 of this challenge.

And another one.

Overview
Following their creation of new versions of the Blackjack, General Motors saw an opportunity for a “new” ‘Mech, one that would cost almost nothing to create but would be sure to be sold without problem to the main users of this design, i.e. the AFFC and the SIMC.
Using their acquired knowledge and eager according to some to redeem themselves, they launched the BJ-2DB.

Capabilities
Willing to allow the new Blackjack to fight head on against the Clans at a reasonable price and after looking at the different weapons available, they decided to go for a straightforward approach with an ever increasing firepower as one comes into range.
For longer ranges, the choice was made of a typical Lyran weapon: a Binary Laser Cannon produced by one of the most renowned company in the Federated Commonwealth, Defiance Industries, that had put to good use what they had learned in miniaturisation for the lasers of the Zeus to make a more viable weapon.
For the closer range barrage, one Large Pulse Laser was combined to the original 4 Medium Lasers to create a firing wall that would make even heavier units think twice before getting into it even if it is a bit taxing on the 10 Double Heat Sinks but this was seen as a small price to pay for this extra firepower.
Apart from that, the only major change made to the design was to use an Endo-Steel Chassis to allow all the improved weapons to easily fit in.

Battle History
To maximise its effect, the Blackjack was given for free to pro Federated Commonwealth Stables on Solaris VII and so far the most spectacular fight happened in the Jungle where one BJ-2DB of the Overlord Stables fought against a Vindicator of the Tandrek Stables with both machines fighting at the close ranges allowed by the Capellan Stadium. The 2 walls of fire proved too much for the Tandrek Stables ‘MechWarrior and resulted in the destruction of his ‘Mech.

Deployment
Following several tests, several units specialised in urban combats in the AFFC and the SIMC have begun to take a liking to the specific mix of firepower, mobility and protection of the newest Blackjack and are bringing in their lightest units.

Notable ‘MechWarriors
In a gesture of PR, General Motors sent the first BJ-2DB to Michael Ubodo in the 8th Deneb Light Cavalry, who accepted it and renamed it Arrow.

Blackjack BJ-2C

Mass: 45 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 3,879,475 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,322

Chassis: Ceresplex IVB Endo-Steel
Power Plant: GM 180 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 43.2 km/h
Maximum Speed: 64.8 km/h
Jump Jets: Anderson Propulsion 30
    Jump Capacity: 120 meters
Armor: StarShield Standard Armor
Armament:
2 Ceres Arms Warrior ER PPCs
    2 CeresArms Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: Ceres Metals Industries
    Primary Factory: Capella
Communications System: CeresCom Model 21-Rs
Targeting and Tracking System: C-Apple Churchill

Overview:
Facing the Capellan March, the Capellan military had the second largest stock
of Blackjacks in the Inner Sphere, but centuries of battles and a shortage of
parts meant that many were little more than stripped chassis in boneyards where
they had been stripped of parts to get other 'Mechs working.

Returning from Outreach with technical knowledge from the exchange between
participants - something Chancellor Liao had enjoyed the benefits of, while
refusing to commit Capellan soldiers to battle against the Clans - the Capellan
leaders were now able to combine this with intelligence data gathered from
Capellan spies within General Motors and the St Ives Compact, bringing many of
these chassis back into action.

Capabilities:
Ceres Metals Industries, who already manufacture the similarly sized
Vindicator, took point on reassembling the Blackjacks and as a result many of
the parts used are shared with the Capellan's workhorse medium 'Mech. This
eases logistics for CCAF units equipped with the Blackjack.

The primary armament of the new Blackjacks are a pair of ER PPCs buried in the
torso where the original chassis mounted mere medium lasers. This design
decision was based on the desire to avoid a situation where the loss of an arm
could drastically cut the armament of the 'Mech. CMI based this on a BJ-1DB
variant sometimes found in the Aurigan reach, the corner of the periphery
flanked by the Confederation, Concordat and Magistracy.

A lightweight endosteel structure frees up tonnage for additional heatsinks,
which with modern cooling technology makes it possible to use the ER PPCs
fairly steadily - at least as much as Warhammers and Marauders from the
Succession Wars could use their own main guns.

As secondary weapons, the Blackjacks retain a medium laser in each arm, with
full flexibility to rotate the weapons for rear-coverage. This leaves the 'Mech
quite capable in urban environments since even outflanked it can bring the
lasers to bear.

Deployment:
The new Blackjacks are being assigned alongside new Vindicators with mixed
lances being sent out to the units most loyal to the new Chancellor. As a
result, they are currently mostly found in the Red Lancers, the Warrior Houses
and McCarron's Armored Cavalry.

Variants:
Some Capellan Mechwarriors have requested that the arm lasers be replaced with
flamers for anti-infantry work. A few test units have been shipped out but this
is mainly seen as something to be used by Home Guard units for crowd control,
not for the frontline units that should receive the Confederation's newest
technology.

You know, I don't think I ever asked how the winner was chosen - it was just his preference, right?  I was thinking I would play it in network of I was doing it.

Grr.  Auto-correct.  Maddening.

No, I'm getting ready to playtest a bunch of designs for a project, but haven't tried to download MM yet.  I understand it's possible to input your own designs and play them, so I'm trying to find someone that's done it.

Oh, and hurry up!  ...I'm bored.  Really, really, bored.   ;D

Yeah I use MM a lot I did a lot of the Clan designs I think I almost finished those before i got fried and moved on to other things. I thought it should be done that way in some sense if he gave categories, like Missiles or close range fighters and such but he goes by fluff a lot and thats not quantifiable in MM Ive done some playing around had designs fight each other but they were mostly variant vs variant not Omnimech X vs Omnimech Y

I'd love to hear which Mech designs did better on MegaMek. It would factor into my decisions. Nearly done with the Whitworth if you guys want to put the Blackjacks through their paces then go right ahead.

I understand it's possible to input your own designs and play them, so I'm trying to find someone that's done it.

I did it a while ago.

Cool, Bradshaw is my MegaMek man and he hasn't taken that angle yet. That would be pretty cool. I am still evaluating the Whitworth by the way.

I remember. We still have a Trial of Refusal pending  :P

Hey guys, I am starting my written review of this BattleMech and was wondering if anyone (Bradshaw, Red Pins, or Ice Hellion) is working on a MegaMek breakdown of the contenders? Might be fun if that happened!

No, it's something I'd like to learn how to do, but can't sit at my desk right now.  It's going to get worse as I try to catch up with hard work and maintenance stuff as well as work.

Okay thanks Red Pins! How about you Bradshaw or Ice Hellion?

I could, I haven't been up keeping my database, too many variants as well. I'd suggest asking for attachments be made of the files if using megameklabs or SSW as knowledge of critical locations are sometimes needed

Not for this one.
Perhaps we could do it for the Hatchetman?

I'd suggest asking for attachments be made of the files if using megameklabs or SSW as knowledge of critical locations are sometimes needed

But in zip as the types of files are limited.

This cursed review brought to you by the wanton destruction of computer crashes and lost data which has caused long double-veloping but thank the gods it is done. With twenty-two different entries by six designers (3 Irose, 5 Abele, 3 Red Pins, 2 Takiro, 8 Ice Hellion, 1 drakensis) I got a whole new understanding of the Blackjack. Thanks to you there is a deeper understanding of this BattleMech and its place has been firmly established in the Salient Horizon setting. So, before I lose all this work again let’s get this review posted!

DISQUALIFIED

RFL-2-01 (Red Pins)
This one wasn’t even close to be legal for this contest but Red Pins wants a review so here it comes. The Light Autocannon/5s were prototyped in the late 3050s and I have to say I like their abilities. The old ACs are usually too heavy to be advantageous at least in my opinion so a 90 meter or 3 hex reduction for 3 tons is certainly worth it in my opinion. Likewise, the Light PPC is a pretty kick ass weapon with an 18 range, 3 minimum, 5 heat, 5 damage, occupying only 2 criticals at 3 tons. Almost too good in my opinion but this Lite Rifleman would certainly get the job as a long-range sentinel. Not too sure how it would do against Fighters though as anticraft abilities maybe inferior to the Rifleman. InnerSphere ER Lasers on the other hand always struck me as overrated and in this case with Mediums get you 2 more heat for 3 more range. Not really sure they are worth it and I would recommend a return to the old models for a more advantageous feel. Heat wise you are pretty well balanced and armor is nearly full given nine tons. I have become a fan of the standard Fusion Engine over the InnerSphere XL Engine for certain tough designs. Your arm mounted Rifleman Lite of the future here could honestly benefit from an XL but a standard does keep cost down. So, there you are on it. For Salient Horizons currently set in 3053 it is far far away from even a drawing board but those are my thoughts.

BJ-C (Red Pins)
This conjectural design which attempted to create the ultimate bodyguard Mech was another design I had to disqualify. Unfortunately, the A-Pods alone were illegal enough to get you tossed here but this design could be considered experimental in this setting as they will be available in two years’ time. This Komodo-esque modification of a Blackjack certainly abandons all or most of its traditional big two weapons for more Medium Lasers. The FASCAM or Thunder LRMs are an interesting if perhaps Capellan approach but I could see St. Ives spies bringing said innovation to the table for a unified Martial Accords (anti-Clan) effort. Bradshaw and I have debated the worthiness of Anti-Missile Systems on the Komodo but for a bodyguard zombie like you attempt here it could work. You have only six rounds of ammunition (btw I do like the new rules which have extended their usefulness in game) thanks to one ton which actually may now be enough for a ‘shieldbearer’ type Mech. Sorry but if you switched the A-Pods for a Flamer it would have gotten you in the door.

TG-2K (Ice Hellion)
Unfortunately, this referenced in fluff entry (t looks like you doubled the stats on the 2E) was not presented in this contest but I reviewed it based on fluff. Like the rest of the TG-2 series it probably used the standard GM BJ-1 chassis, 180 Fusion Engine (4/6) with Jump Jets (4), 10 (20) Double Heat Sinks, and was protected by 8.5 tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) I think. Functioning as a C3 lance commander with a C3 Master, 2 Large Lasers, and 6 Small Lasers would have been an interesting role reversal for the Blackjack which I view more as an escort. This concept may have worked but I would have preferred 2 Medium Lasers and 2 Smalls for greater reach. It’s a shame that this rare Kurita entry was ultimately unavailable for review and had to ultimately be disqualified.

PASSABLE

19. TG-2AG (Ice Hellion)
For some reason Blackjacks with missile racks in an arm in place of a big gun or large energy weapon just don’t cut it for me. I liked the core of your TG-2 series with the original GM BJ-1 chassis and classic 180 Fusion Engine (4/6) plus Jump Jets (4). Ten Double Heat Sinks and eight tons of ferro-fibrous (143 factor) with CASE provide for a solid performance. However, I just didn’t care for the Large Pulse paired with three LRM-5s (48) supported by two Medium Lasers and a TAG. Perhaps if you guys had gone with arm mounted ER Larges and torso mounted LRMs for a pure long-range fire support BattleMech I could have gotten into it but even that probably doesn’t work. Anyway, thanks but no thanks on this one Ice.

17 & 18. BJ-2LB & BJ-2LB2 (Abele)
With the LRM-5 and SRM-4 swap fresh in our minds from the Whitworth contest I know where at least part of this variant came from. Not a bad semi-modular switch to keep in mind for future designs but not sure if missiles work with the Blackjack. I know the canon 3050 upgrade does use Streak SRM-2s quite effectively but not really as part of the main arsenal more of a supporting role. I like the LB 10-X AC usage here as one of my concepts included this larger autocannon as part of the Blackjack approach but your model sort of leaves it with a single big gun. I like two for the Blackjack with other smaller supporting weapons but thanks for playing this time around.

16. BJ-1B (Red Pins)
This artillery model from Blouschitz Enterprises is certainly outside the box. I like the idea of utilizing disfavored chassis in a new way but this one started out with a new EndoSteel internal structure. When building off an old design starting with ‘new bones’ strikes me as super odd but I suppose that utilizing old 180 Fusion Engines (4/6) is somewhat more practical. I really miss the jump jets of the Blackjack here too for their maneuverability especially on fire support or artillery ‘Mechs. This lack of mobility prevents them from setting up on advantageous terrain or escaping pursuers without them. The massive Arrow IV Launcher with ten reloads and a single Medium Laser compose its only weaponry which certainly provides it a role that the AFFC would need to fill. A dozen Single Heat Sinks do the job of cooling the Mech while it moves and fires so no objection there. I really enjoyed the fluff which was spot on in my opinion but the design was a bit off starting with the EndoSteel. Ultimately I see the Blackjack as an escort for such Artillery ‘Mechs but not one of these Mechs.

15. BJ-2N (Abele)
This Hesperus manufactured design by Defiance Industries is based on the same Abele 2S model
More of a missile boat with arm mounted LRM-10s with Artemis IV FCS replacing the main guns of the Blackjack which makes it feel very much out of character to me. An ER Large Laser mounted in the center torso really transforms it into a fire support machine which could use an escort like the Blackjack to defend it at close range. Granted it does have a Medium Laser but this new design which is intriguing on face value and reminds me of a TRO3055 Hammer somewhat. Unfortunately, it now needs a bodyguard unit like the original Blackjack for folks who get in too close.

14. BJ-2AC (Abele)
While purportedly a very simple upgrade the 2AC is no doubt something that could be considered by lostech advocates but its ultimate usefulness is somewhat debatable. I like the eight and half tons of ferro-fibrous armor (152 factor) which provides near max protection for the Blackjack but the 180 XL Engine brings several issues. One, the proposed refit is not simple and quite expensive even if the component is readily available. Plus, the Extra Light Engine makes it vulnerable to disabling damage from ammunition explosions even with the new torso CASEs included. While the AC/2s do provide long range pop it isn’t much more than harassing level damage which doesn’t put off too many BattleMechs especially the Clans. For that reason, the Streak SRM-2 addition seems rather pointless as most opponents (including those Spheroid based ones) are just going to trade long range volleys. So, while passable I really didn’t love this design.

13. BJ-2B (Irose)
This speed over armor model which featured the larger 225 XL Engine was a nice entry but was not worth it in my opinion. Not only is the Extra Light Engine more vulnerable to destruction but it also makes the Mech’s price tag much higher. For a bodyguard unit this is somewhat undesirable because I feel you want a tough but somewhat expendable guard at least in my opinion. Higher speed is good for quicker reactions to threats but I was a little disappointed that this faster model didn’t have a corresponding boost in jumping as well. The heat dissipation is better with fifteen Double Heat Sinks helped by a higher rated engine that can mount two more of these bulky freezers internally. I understand you did get victimized by a three-ton gyro and a larger engine with more integral heat sinks does help deal with all that energy weapon heating but the corresponding fragility is too much for me.

CONTENDERS

12. TG-2GW (Ice Hellion)
The God of War here is my preferred approach to Blackjack Artillery Mechs if there was such concept. It retains the Jump Jets (4) for mobility and the core chassis remains unaltered along with the GM 180 Fusion Engine (4/6). Ten Double Heat Sinks are the big difference allowing you to save two tons and, in my opinion, more ably use existing core equipment of the Blackjack in an upgrade. Eight tons of ferro-fibrous (143 factor) with CASE provide pretty solid protection for this mobile Arrow IV System (10 reloads). I didn’t care for two Small Lasers however because of their short-range and would have liked a single Medium Laser as Red Pins did with his ArtyJack. As I said to him though I feel like you need a Blackjack to guard this variant and so to me anyway the concept isn’t that desirable.

11. TG-2HP (Ice Hellion)
While I didn’t tend to like the unbalanced Blackjack this one with a LB 10-X AC (20) and five Medium Lasers had potential especially for whacking Elementals. With ten Double Heat Sinks you can really fire away with impunity as overheating is not really a concern. The 180 Fusion Engine (4/6) with Jump Jets (4) only produce a slight spike while Alpha Striking and Jumping. This all mounted on the classic GM BJ-1 chassis and protected by eight tons of ferro-fibrous (143 factor) with CASE is pretty solid. It reminds me more of the Snake than a Blackjack and I do miss a second big gun (perhaps a Large Laser may have worked) but this was a good contender.

10. BJ-4D (Irose)
While I was busy coming up with my own concepts Irose drew first blood on the twin Ultra AC/5 concept. His design pretty similar to mine but had some differences which I didn’t care for as much as my own. Doubling your ammunition is nice sure especially in light of the double shot capabilities of the Ultra ACs but it seemed to take a lot away from yours. Sure, having only twenty shots per AC cuts your available ammo for double fire down to ten rounds but I also fear ammo explosions. You did have CASEs which I didn’t but I’d rather combine three tons of ammo into a single location to save weight for a single CASE optimally. Most notably the secondary close-range arsenal was cut to a single Medium Laser and even the jump jets were cut by one which I don’t really love. All in all, I liked mine better but I feel this concept was a real contender.

9. TG-2 (Ice Hellion)
Seems like we were thinking with the same brain on this one Ice as the fluff elements from my BJ-2S and this one share much it common. Using the core GM BJ-1 chassis and the 180 Fusion Engine (4/6) with Jump Jets (4) was solid in every variant you presented. Ten Double Heat Sinks did a good job at dispersing most weapon fire heat generated but I really preferred the eight and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) armor present on all energy-based entries you made. Especially thick-skinned energy boats were my escorts of choice here for the Blackjack and this one went for it. Two Large Lasers were well suited for a longer-range bracket while six Medium Lasers made up a short-ranged arsenal that was joined by two Small Pulses at knife range. All and all not too shabby here bud. You just got beat by better designs at least in my opinion.

8. TG-2E (Ice Hellion)
E is for Easy as this fairly simple refit using Ferro-Fibrous, a CASE, and Double Heat Sinks basically takes the old Blackjack and polishes it up. Remaining nearly identical to its predecessor in terms of weaponry this would be a first step in lostech recovery or a simple Periphery upgrade. So nice you posted it twice it surprises me that nobody attempted a similar bump up of the BJ-3 with at least the full protection Ferro-Fibrous armor. Would have been nice for St. Ives forces and such a low-tech upgrade would have been great for mercenary forces around the InnerSphere not to mention the Robinson aka Draconis March. Such a simple 3 plus variant could have been in widespread demand easily. Here the AC/2s just fail to impress the hell out of me as their weak harassing fire seems easily ignored in the Clan War environment of the 3050s. While I did consider it higher on the list this design placed here.

NEAR MISSES

7. BJ-2S (Takiro)
My initial concept for the new and improved Blackjack was to try a mix of energy and ballistic weaponry at least in regards to its main guns that worked so well with my Stormbringer upgrade of the Warhammer. Accomplishing this with an LB 10-X AC (20) and Large Pulse mounted in either arm makes for a perfect Elemental killer or light AA defender. Going so large however with the main weaponry cost me as I had to curb two Medium Lasers to Smalls plus a new EndoSteel frame and XL Engine were also necessary. Ten Double Heat Sinks are enough to deal with weapon fire but movement can be somewhat tricky. Admittedly the Small Lasers aren’t going to be firing often so that isn’t too bad plus the fluff came together well. Nine tons of armor (144 factor) and the fluff were pretty good. However, must say that my Steiner Blackjack was defeated by a superior concept. I would like to add my fluff however.

6. BJ-2D (Takiro)
Being the hardest on myself this twin Ultra AC/5 (40) concept was pretty solid but failed to land a spectacular win here. The upgrade of the main ballistic weaponry to the next size and lostech up required some significant sacrifices. Got most of the weight from a new EndoSteel structure and the readily available 180 XL Engine, thanks Hatchetman! Ten Double Heat Sinks do a great job at dissipating weapon fire from its new double shot main cannons and four old Medium Lasers. Even when combined with maximum movement (4 jump) continuous fire remains heat neutral which is fantastic. Eight tons of armor (128 factor) though together with the XL Engine do present a costly hazard for this high-tech Blackjack. Fluff was good although I feel I could have done better given more time. To be honest this was always my second favorite concept although I feel it came out better than my BJ-2S.

5. BJ-2S (Abele)
This model from the Furillo division of Defiance Industries certainly fulfills the original infantry suppression role of the Blackjack. With two Large Pulses, two Medium Pulses, and two Flamers it certainly would be death to all troopers unlucky enough to approach it in battle. While some might point out the range limitations of such an approach the only drawback that really matters to me is the high heat generated by this all energy array. Alpha Striking and running (not jumping) will put you over by fourteen which is way too much for me. I suppose bracket firing is a possible approach to relieve this ‘heat wave’ but this takes a lot of the teeth or damage potential out of this Blackjack which is disappointing. I really don’t see a better way to address the heat management issue as I like the eleven Double Heat Sinks which is better than average. Still there is a lot to like here which includes a max amount of armor (9.5 tons) protection and nothing else really outlandish to this Blackjack.

4. BJ-2DB (Ice Hellion)
This bracket fire special creates a dual wall of fire thanks to a Blazer, Large Pulse and four Medium Lasers. Using the headcapping Binary Laser Cannon to clip opponents at long range could indeed cause them to charge into a heavier shorter-range barrage from the Pulse and four Mediums. Tough choice to make because you can get pounded to death at either. Eight and a half tons of armor (136 factor) provides pretty solid protection for this Blackjack which retains the same movement rate. The use of the standard GM 180 Fusion Engine to achieve this maneuverability also provides a level of durability and low cost. Ten Double Heat Sinks do a pretty nice job dispersing weapons fire especially if the intended bracketing is carried out. Nice job on the fluff to from the story about its appearance in the Solaris arenas to the other GM PR stunt with Ubodo. Very, very close but I feel like this a limited-edition Solaris Mech.

WINNER

3. BJ-2C (drakensis)
This Capellan model taps into the original twin PPC concept of the St. Ives BJ-3 and I could certainly see Sun Tzu pressing the Mech back into service just because of the CCAF’s need to field whatever it can at this time. Its similarity to the Vindicator and Liao familiarity could certainly help in the Blackjacks’ reintroduction. Although I am picturing a tiny armed BJ-2C (L?) with Medium Lasers alone being a lot less impressive then Autocannons or ER PPCs (now mounted into the side torsos) this model could be quite effective as fire support for other units. It may face something of a heat buildup problem as its fourteen Double Heat Sinks are not enough to disperse weapon fire from its main two weapons and movement alone but this can be managed by alternating fire (2 -1 pattern). Manufacturing a new EndoSteel structure would be the major obstacle but the Snake is soon to be rolling out of Ceres Metals so that materiel would likely be available so you’d just have to create the appropriate molds. Good enough for the bronze this time around drak, congrats on the BJ-2L of the Salient Horizon universe!

2. BJ-2A (Irose)
This simple all energy possible refit which uses eight and half ton of advanced Ferro-Fibrous armor is just very solid to me. While slower than Irose’s 2B it is just a tough little zombie that retains the same speed and mobility of the original. Using fourteen Double Heat Sinks to cool the all laser arsenal which includes two ER Larges and four Mediums is quite enough to Alpha Strike but good enough for smart bracket firing. While heat spikes could be a problem any possibility for ammunition explosion is removed also meaning this Blackjack could stay in the field indefinitely watching your back against almost any opposition. A true enduring bodyguard unit which this escort design maybe most truly suited. I am officially naming this one the BJ-2D for the Salient Horizon setting and congratulations on the silver medal!!

1. TG-2EW (Ice Hellion)
Using the GM BJ-1 chassis along with its tried and true 180 Fusion Engine along with ten Double Heat Sinks was a solid basis for the entire TG-2 series. Eight and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) armor makes for near max protection which is great for any bodyguard unit. I like replacing the two light arm cannons with two Large Lasers which may seem backwards to some but there is a big increase in firepower. Plus they don’t inflict as much of a heat bloom as ER models might give and the four Medium Lasers remain for much needed short range pop. What I really liked is the addition of an advanced electronics warfare package which runs the gambit from a Beagle Active Probe, Guardian ECM Suite, and TAG. With the appearance of the Clans a very effective EW bodyguard is effective in more ways than one and was the big concept clincher to me. First prize and the gold medal to Ice Hellion for a similar but different Steiner Blackjack design!!! I would like to combine our fluff if permissible for the best possible BJ-2S, congratulations and thanks again everyone.

Not much to do with 4/6.  Frankly I wanted practice with MML more than anything.  It is maddening that I can't seem to get the contest rules though my head, though.

So, what comes next after the Hatchetman?

Yup.  Saw it, kinda following it, but that's it.  I really like the classic, don't think it can be improved much.
