Title: Optimizing the Centurion
Post by: Takiro on July 19, 2020, 10:21:54 PM
Our twenty third optimization contest turns to a House Davion favorite which will be the first in the fifty-ton weight class. Originally designed as the Trebuchet’s partner in crime during the last days of the Star League the Centurion went its own way and became a staple for the AFFS. Starting as the CN9-A two other Succession War era variants were developed featuring an AC/20 (the CN9-AH introduced in 2874) and a Large Laser (the CN9-AL introduced in 2915). I must admit to some negative feelings about these blow up machines featured in the BattleTech cartoon during the Clan Invasion but over the years this ‘Mech has grown on me. This is probably cause of the two Yen Lo Wangs and numerous examples of this BattleMech coming in handy during our home campaigns. We already have two lostech variants (the CN9-D introduced in 3049 and the CN9-D3 which features a Triple Strength Myomer introduced in 3053) but can you do better? Can’t wait to see how you think the Centurion fits into the Salient Horizon setting in its most perfect form.

Design Criteria
Design: Centurion Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 50 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

The Centurion in Action: Today
Undoubtedly, you’ll find the Centurion in the service of the Federated Commonwealth at this moment in time. Featuring much more prominently in traditional Davion commands than anywhere else the Centurion has been a symbol of the AFFS might for centuries. The FedCom RCTs and their AFFC brethren use a mix of Steiner-Davion equipment which obviously includes the Centurion. No doubt seen in service alongside some Lyran favorites in these units this dynamic should make for some interesting pairings. However, many Steiner patriots may look down on this inferior Davion machine meaning traditional LCAF commands may feature the Centurion but at a less prodigious rate than AFFS and AFFC. Mercenaries, especially in some long-term Davion employees will also field the Centurion which is highly regarded among their for-hire community. The St Ives Compact with whom the Yen Lo Wang currently remains in service with will also field their share of Centurions.
The Clans will likely remain the Centurions chief adversary even after the Truce of Tukayyid. Likely all lostech models will be pushed into service along the former Tamar March where they will participate in raids, assaults, and defense of FedCom worlds. Raiders from neighboring states (Draconis, Capellan, and Taurian) and Pirates will make up the rest of the Centurion’s opposition. However, these will likely be lower tech opponents for older models to deal with which could be helped by more sensible upgrades.
I make no secret about the fact that the Marian Hegemony desiring this BattleMech but the nation would not realistically have the means to produce one even in the far future. However, a low-tech variant sold to them as a refit package would be an idea as a market would no doubt exist.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday July 31st, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

The Lexington Combat Group (LCG) is one the largest 'mercenary' commands in existence and have been under the employ of the Federated Suns for the past two centuries. In this time they have purchased a significant number of the Centurion battlemechs. And it is this fact in mind that Major General Malcolm Feinman consulted with Lieutenant Colonel Margrethe Kempner, commander of the LCG's Support Branch on what could be done to improve their combined fleet of over sixty Centurions. Kempner and her team of engineers made up from the LCG's three subordinate support battalions worked diligently for the next 50 days and came up with two designs that share all of the same components with the exception of their weapons configurations. They both use the same 250XL found in the newest version of the Enforcer and have the same 8.5 ton of ferro-fibrous armor. They also share one shared medium laser and a Guardian ECM suite. There are two versions. One is designed for prolonged long-range combat, while the other is optimized for short range combat.

The first variant steps away from the traditional use of an auto-cannon and replaces the AC/10 with an ER PPC. This reduces this Centurion's dependence on ammunition and increases the range of the Mech's main weapon. The LRM10 launcher has been replaced by an Artemis IV-equipped LRM15 fed by a three ton ammunition bay. While excelling at long-range combat, this variant is lacking at short range with only a standard medium laser and a medium pulse laser as support to the main weapons.

The second variant is the exact opposite of the first and excels at short-range combat. Based on the CN9-AH version of the Centurion and utilizes the Class 20 auto-cannon to deadly effect. It has a deeper ammunition bay than the CN9-AH with three tons of of AC/20 ammunition. Additional short range firepower is provided by and SRM4 launcher and the medium lasers from the original Centurion. Together these two variants make an excellent combat pair that can mutually support each other on the battlefield. It is the intent of the LCG's command staff to acquire these two Mechs in what amounts to a 60/40 split of the fleet. Additionally, it is hoped by Lt. Colonel's staff that the AFFS Procurement Office sees the value in these two designs and considers them both as future acquisitions for the combined commands of the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth.

While having a much smaller army than its two largest neighbors, the Free Worlds League and the Magistracy of Canopus, the Marian Hegemony has the desire to update its legions. With less than a dozen Centurions in its forces, it is still one of the popular Mech in the legions. While built from piracy, the Hegemony is still wanting to be seen as a legitimate nation. With that in mind, the Hegemony went through legitimate sources to acquire the ferro-fibrous armor and the binary laser cannon that is being used in their upgrade package for their Centurions. The binary laser cannon replaces the auto-cannon and gives the Mech slightly increased striking while not sacrificing any range. Heat is an issue which is mitigated by the weight savings from the weapons and armor switches leading to the addition of six single heat sinks. Alpha striking would be very dangerous for the pilot, but sustained firing of the LRM10 and the binary laser cannon is possible, but not without complications. The rear firing medium laser has been moved to the front in a means to increase overall striking power.

Three good starts Abele!

I know I have a AC/20 variant of the Centurion somewhere. Probably for the AC/20 contest we did.

Yup the Invictus....

Title: Re: Optimizing the Centurion
Post by: lrose on July 21, 2020, 08:07:42 AM
Originally introduced in 2801, the Centurion was designed to be an operating partner for the Trebuchet, providing close in defense with its massive autocannon.  Produced at Corean Enterprises factory on Ramen II, the design was found in numerous FWL lances.  It is also found in large numbers in the AFFC, so much so that the mech is considered an unofficial mech of House Davion.  While most of the records were lost when the Ramen II plant was destroyed in 2845, it appears that the majority of the production runs were sent to the Federated Suns.  These shipments, conducted in secrecy, were in violation of FWL trade laws.  This has resulted in the suggestion that the Ramen II plant was not destroyed by the Capellans, as is claimed in the history books, but rather by the FWLM when the deception was discovered.  Regardless, following the destruction of the plant, Corean Enterprises relocated their corporate headquarters to New Avalon, where the Corean family received a title of nobility from the Davions.  For the next 150 years, the company continued to turn out spare parts for the Centurion until they finally constructed a new manufacturing line at their New Avalon plant in 3012.

While the mech proved popular with the Federated Suns, it balky autocannon was its Achilles Heel.  For much of the Succession Wars, Corean attempted to fix the problem but found the solutions were worse then the original.  Only 2 variants ever saw significant deployment, the CN9-AH with it's massive Luxor DDX-5 Autocannon and the laser equipped CN9-AL.   It was the reintroduction of advanced technologies in the 3040s that finally allowed Corean to fix the problems of the Centurion.

The initial model made significant changes to the mech, incorporating an XL engine to greatly increase the speed, while also replacing the old problematic Luxor autocannon with the Mydron Excel LB-10X, which due to its compact size could fit easily in the space available.  While much improved, complaints started coming back from the field.  One set of complaints centered around the weapons.  With the increased speed, the mech was seen as an excellent raider.  However the ammo dependent weapons meant the mech could not operate away from its base for extended periods of time.  The other complaint came from mechwarriors who saw the mech as a trooper type mech.  While they did not complain about the increased speed, they were upset by the use of an XL engine which made the mech susceptibility to engine damage, reducing its durability.

Realizing that there was no one solution to the complaints, Count Corean ordered his engineers to develop 2 new models, one as a raider and the other as a standard trooper battlemech.  The CN9-DR is designed to be used as a raider.  Retaining the XL engine, the mech models its weapon configuration after the CN9-AL version.  The autocannon is replaced with a Blazefire Sweetshot ER Large Laser.  This provides the mech with a hard hitting weapon that does depend on ammo.  The 10 tube LRM launcher is upgraded to a 15 tube model, providing more firepower at long range. To ensure that the mech has an adequate supply of ammo for long duration missions, the launcher is generously supplied with 3 tons of ammo.  Other changes to the weapons include the addition of a third medium laser and a small pulse laser.

All of these energy weapons generate a significant amount of heat, to deal with the increased heat output the mech switched to the use of Double Strength heatsinks.  Other changes include a Guardian ECM to increase the stealthiness of the mech and an additional 1.5 tons of armor, providing more protection for the vulnerable engine.

The other model, the CN9-DT is designed as basic trooper mech for medium companies.  The GM 300XL engine has been replaced by the original Nissan 200 engine, greatly lowering the speed.  The weapons array is unchanged from the CN9-D, however the engineers were able to redesign the armor protection providing the mech with 10.5 tons of armor.

The more advanced CN9-DR has entered production at Corean's plant on New Avalon, while the lower tech CN9-DT has been licensed to Jalestar for the factory on Panpour.

Title: Re: Optimizing the Centurion

The CN9-DZ was designed in response to feedback received by Corean Enterprises from mechwarriors following the introduction of the CN9-DR and CN9-DT.  While the feedback on modifications was generally positive, a few mechwarriors suggested that the CN9-DT could be further improved by mounting an ER Large Laser in place of the autocannon.  While at first Corean resisted developing another new model of the Centurion, the AFFC agreed to fund the R&D project, which resulted in the CN9-DZ.  Starting with the basic CN9-DT chassis, the designers removed the Mydron autocannon and replaced it with the Blazefire Sweetshot ER Large Laser.  The laser freed up significant amounts of tonnage for other improvements.  A third medium laser was added to the mech, similar to the CN9-DR.  The designers also upgraded the LRM launcher, replacing the old 10 tube model with a 20 tube launcher.  To compensate for the added heat build up of these weapons, 2 additional heatsinks have been added and the mech makes used of double strength models.

The CN9-DZ has proven popular with some mechwarriors, while others prefer the autocannon of the CN9-DT.  As the two mechs share significant commonality, it has been decided to keep both in production since this not pose a significant burden on the AFFC's logistics system.

I also wanted to open up discussion on the the CN9-D which is featured in Technical Readout 3050. In my opinion it is one of the few examples of a solid lostech upgrade. Maybe it could be a little more optimized but it isn't horribly flawed. Curious to see what you guys think on that topic as well.

From the depths of the Solaris 'Mech pits to your backyard comes the new CN9 Urban Peacemaker. Have a grudge against someone and don't know what to do about it? How about a 4 ton piece of sharpened titanium-alloyed steel to get your message across. Updated with the latest in IFF technology the CN9U can target and identify all your enemies within secs on the chaotic and uncoordinated battlefield. Precision is in the name of the game, we don't want Mary Ellen from the local bakery to be shot in the crossfire. So the primary weaponry for our design is from the Sutel Precision Line out of Tancredi with the large Pulse Laser integrated into its top of the line targeting and tracking system. Whats that Bandit armored transports and infantry are on their way to poor Mary Ellen's bakery for a taste of her baked goods. Well with its twin Holly SRM 4 packs I think they are in for some humble pie as missiles rain down upon them and they might have to worry about their pie being extra crispy as most designs are equipped with a loadout of one ton of Inferno rounds to light up the town. And for those rare down times whats better than sitting around drinking a few with friends and BBQ's some local wildlife with the Hotshot flamer, guaranteed to roast its targets.

So come on down to Slocom Joes and pickup the newest in variants from the minds of Corean Enterprises.

In a historical cooperative effort between the Federated Commonwealth and the Draconis Combine a new variant of the Centurion has arrived in the Inner Sphere.  Creating the Centurion into a medium range command 'Mech for both great houses. Integrating the Command equipment becoming prevalent in the DCMS with the high end electronics packages from the AFFC breathes new life in the historical design.

In a desperate need for Mechs that could support Heavy and Assault lances and were cheaper than building more expensive Rifleman Mechs, Corean Enterprises was commissioned by the FWLM for just such a Mech. The result was this heavily modified Centurion that features a smaller callibre auto-cannon and a larger LRM launcher fitted with an Artemis IV FCS. Deadly accurate at longer ranges, this variant can effectively engage targets with impunity due to the modified Garrett D2j targeting system borrowed from the Rifleman. The Guardian ECM suite helps shield the Centurion, and it allies, from enemy Mech attacks while the TAG unit guides friendly Arrow IV missiles onto the enemy' Secondary weaponry is limited to a pair of Magna Mk II medium lasers and single Magna 400P medium pulse laser.

The CN9-M Centurion is an upgrade that was introduced by Bowie Industries.  Unable to manufacture the mech, Bowie Industries saw an opportunity to introduce an upgrade for the Centurions operated by the AFFC in the Lyran state and mercenary units. The new design is based around the CN9-AL model that was popular in the old Commonwealth.  The CN9-AL removed the Autocannon in favor of an Large Laser, a Small Laser, 6 extra heatsinks and 2.5 tons of armor.  The new CN9-M makes changes to the mechs weapons and heat dissipation system, incorporating advanced technologies to improve the performance of the mech.

The Angst Large Laser carried in the right arm has been replaced with a Defiance 1001 ER PPC.  This places a significant heat burden on the mech.  To compensate for this, the heat sinks are replaced with double strength models.  This allowed the removal of 4 heatsinks, while still improving heat dissipation by 50%.

Using the weight savings from the heat dissipation system, the designers made changes to the mech's secondary system.  The LRM was upgraded with an Artemis IV system improving it's accuracy.  A third medium laser was added to the mech, although many techs have complained about the use of a Defiance B3M Medium Laser.  While a reliable and commonly available weapon, the techs complain that they now have 2 different types of medium lasers on the same mech, requiring more parts.  Lastly the old Angst Light Laser has been removed and replaced with a Maxell Small Pulse Laser, improving accuracy and making it more effective against infantry.

Now a great city fighter

Around 3050 Capellan March Militia units started to convert Centurions into city fighting battlemech, which they needed more then the original model. These Centurions were brought back to a depot were they were given a moderate upgrade, replace the old chassis with endo steel and then added both a Beagle Active Probe, and Guardian ECM Suite allowing for the Centurions to truly function as a city fighting battlemech Replacing all of the weapons with five SRM-6 launchers with three tons of ammo, this allowed for the battlemech to strike enemy battlemechs from behind without problem.

Centurion CN9-M

Mass: 50 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 8,021,000 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,439

Chassis: Corean-II Deluxe Endo-Steel
Power Plant: Magna 250 Fusion XL Engine
Walking Speed: 54.0 km/h
Maximum Speed: 86.4 km/h
Jump Jets: None
    Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: StarGuard III Standard Armor
Armament:
    1 Zeus Slingshot Gauss Rifle
    2 Photech 806c Medium Lasers
    2 Holly LRM-5s
Manufacturer: MacAdams-Suharno
    Primary Factory: Stewart
Communications System: Corean TransBand-J9
Targeting and Tracking System: Corean B-Tech

Overview:
With the blessings of Captain-General Thomas Marik, the AFFC requested that Corean Enterprises reach out to their former FWL-based branch to begin production of the Centurion, an increasingly popular workhorse of their medium lances after the exploits of Justin Allard and Kai Allard-Liao.

MacAdams-Suharno were generally co-operative, enough to alarm SAFE and MIIO, which had both suspected that the division from Corean was more on paper than reality, and a range of security checks and investigations delayed sending the detains of the new CN9-D from New Avalon to Stewart. Eager to receive the promised funding, MacAdams-Suharno went ahead with their own variation, the first shipments due to reach the AFFC early in 3053.

Capabilities:
The CN9-M uses the same extra-light engine and endosteel structure being prepared for the Trebuchet, long it's partner in FWL service. This gives the 'Mech a needed increase in speed to what is now considered average for medium 'Mech movements - sufficient for its workhorse role.

Inspired by reports of Kai Allard-Liao's upgraded Yen-lo-Wang, designers replaced the autocannon with a Zeus Slingshot. MacAdams-Suharno had been preparing this for an upgrade packages of the venerable Cyclops, this was readily available and significantly enhances long range firepower.

The  Luxor LRM launcher in the chest was no longer readily available to MacAdams-Suharno so they elected to replace it with a pair of smaller Holly racks, an increasingly common arrangement in the FWLM, but perhaps not an ideal fit for the AFFC.

To save time, neither CASE nor double-heatsinks have been fitted to the CN9-M Centurion. The 'Mech doesn't run particularly warm unless the rear-mounted medium laser is used, so this isn't considered a major issue. MacAdams-Suharno did reinforce the armour protection across the forward torso with an extra half-ton of armour, something that is quite welcome for Mechwarriors.

Deployment:
The CN9-M is expected to be shipped directly to the Tamar March where it is hoped that the Clans will confuse them for CN9-D models, although given their familiarity with OmniMechs, some analysts suggest that it is more likely Clan warriors will assume that the differences in armament are the result of Omni-tech.

House Stewart has raised the possibility of funding a second production line of the Centurion, eager to see advanced 'Mechs entering the Stewart Dragoons. Given the close relationship between House Stewart and House Marik, approval by the FWLM is unlikely to be a barrier.

Garnet Sommersby is one of Corean's best engineers and he was set the task of building a better Centurion. Sommersby jumped at the mission set before him. His prime thought was to give the Centurion the most powerful gun available, the Poland Model A Gauss Rifle. In order to accomplish this, Garnet decided to add the GM 200XL fusion engine which saved a good deal of weight and along with the addition of ferro-fibrous, the Gauss Rifle could be easily mounted in the space that once contained the Class 10 auto-cannon. The LRM launcher has been replced by a pair of Federated SuperStreak Streak SRM2 launchers and the standard medium lasers were 'upgraded' to a pair of Magna 600P medium pulse lasers.

The CN10-G has the ability to stay in the battle for a long time due to the deep ammo bin for Gauss rifle and heavy armor protection to the nine tons of ferro-fibrous armor. In trials, it easily bested Mechs in its own weight class and those of heavier weights. Its only failing is its lack of mobility due to the lack of jump jets.

To address the mobility issues, Sommersby also put forth the CN10-H Centurion which is more conventional than the CN10-G. It uses an advanced version of the Class 10 auto-cannon from Mydron Industries. The Streak SRM2s have replaced by a pair of Federated 5-Shot LRM5s to give this variant added long-range firepower. The twin medium pulse lasers ahve been retained. Armor protection has been uprated to the addition of an extra half-ton of ferro-fibrous.

To correct the mobility issues. a quartet of Pitban LFT-50 jumpjets, normally found on the Hornet light Mech, have been added to the chassis. This gives the Mech the same mobility as the original Enforcer. This gives a field commander greater tactical flexibility and gives the Centurion an added ability.

Title: Re: Optimizing the Centurion

It seems we all had the same idea: here is my addition to the Gauss Rifle mafia.

And before anyone say anything, my personal vision of CASE is that it only prevents damage transfer from ammo explosions and since for Gauss Rifles, the ammo doesn't explode but the Rifle can, I don't use it where I should/could (I know I am wrong by the rules but this makes more sense to me).

First here is the fluff, with one reference (but a big one :P).

Overview
The Centurion has always been a unofficial Davion design and Corean Enterprises with the help of the NAIS had turned it into the primary test-bed for new technologies, which had led together with an aggressive marketing policy and the licensing to Jalastar Aerospace to a new era for a ‘Mech that was a few decades ago on the verge of phasing out.
However Corean Enterprises knew that something more was needed to bring the Centurion at the forefront of the AFFC and to make it compete with the Enforcer, securing its position, not only as a wonder toy but as a true front-line ‘Mech.
Thanks to the new licence agreement with Jalastar Aerospace, they could produce a new version without anyone looking too much at them as this new facility was clearly targeted at second-rated units.

Capabilities
The Centurion had always been a fighter known for its slow but steady advances and its increased firepower as it came closer to its enemy. The CN9-D, which was the most up-to-date variant of this ‘Mech, changed that thanks to the inclusion of a XL engine, improving by a third its maximum speed while keeping the original firepower and giving it some extra flexibility with the use of a LB 10-X.
However this was not seemed enough as the Centurion has always been known for its big gun and the confidence it gave to its ‘MechWarriors, meaning that Corean Enterprises wanted to bring a Gauss Rifle on this chassis while having as little as possible to change on its production lines.

Thanks to a deal with Johnston Industries that used this as a way to expand further its facility on New Syrtis dedicated to “lost tech” items, they secured access to a supply of Gauss Rifles. However with the Gauss Rifle weighing 4 tons more than the Mydron LB 10-X meant some radical measures were to be taken to ensure that the new gun would fit in the arm (having learned from its mistakes, Corean Enterprises had no will to go for a specially designed Gauss Rifle that could generate problems later on).
The first step was to put 8 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armour improving its protection and freeing some tons. The rear firing Medium Laser was replaced by a Small one, enough to deter most opponents from getting too close and the LRM-10 by twin LRM-5 without Artemis IV with only one ton of ammo shielded by a CASE.
The inclusion of the Gauss Rifle meant that the Lower Arm Actuator had to be removed to make room for the bulkier rifle but this was seen as a minor sacrifice for the increased damage capacity and range enjoyed by the new Centurion with its improved speed over the classical one, turning it into a real hunter on the battlefield (even if because of the inclusion of so many advanced technology, the ‘Mech is filled to the maximum and maintaining one remains a nightmare) or so Corean Enterprises hoped.

Battle History
The classical overconfidence of the Centurion ‘MechWarrior has been restored with this brand new version and this showed on several occasions. For example, on one occasion during a raid by pirates against a convoy organised by Consolidated Utilities and Services in the Outback.
In spite of being outnumbered with only 1 ‘Mech against a Lance of Pirates, ‘MechWarrior George Smith, the Centurion pilot decided that “A piece of spaghetti or a military unit can only be led from the front end” and thus went hunting using its range and speed to take his opponent from afar with one shot than another. The Pirates were not match for the speed and range of the Green Hornet and were quickly destroyed.

Deployment
All production lines except those working for test-bed versions have been switched to the new CN9-D2 with them being sent only to AFFC units or to mercenaries with outstanding loyalty and service history.
Strangely some CN9-D2 and A2 have been appearing in a few Regulan Hussars Siege units. Since DMI didn’t find any leak towards the Marik part of Corean Enterprises and since the Captain-General has made sure that the upgrade priority was not given to these units as a mean to punish them for their resistance to his reforms, the origin of these ‘Mechs remains a mystery for now.

Variants
The first test-bed for the new Centurion, the CN9-A2, was seen as a good compromise between modernisation and cost, perfect for militia units or mercenaries and packs almost the same weapons as the CN9-D2 (the fact that it has nearly the same free amount of tonnage for weapons helped).
Jalastar Aerospace has stopped the production of the classical CN9-A for the new one, which thanks to its Gauss Rifle and twin LRM-5 packs the same long-range punch as the CN9-D2. The protection was improved with 8 tons of Ferro-Fibrous locally produced and a CASE to protect the ‘Mech should the ammo of the missile launchers explode. Some have criticized the lack of secondary weapons but with one Medium Laser pointing forward, the CN9-A2 is only lacking regarding the rear protection when compared to almost any Centurion.
In spite of this short-coming, the CN9-A2 was a success and the 4 next production runs have already been bought, ensuring a influx of money for both Jalastar Aerospace and Corean Enterprises.

Notable ‘MechWarriors
The Grimm family has piloted Centurion for decades if not centuries and always in the Illician Lancers. Although Ian Grimm is no longer in his prime years, he is still as aggressive as before and the new Centurion suits him. He has christened it Eckesachs for the sword of an ancient German folk hero that belonged to a giant and was used to kill members of his family by the hero.

Great job Abele and Ice Hellion!

I won't add to the Gauss-a-thon now sweeping this contest but how about I Blaze a new trial with this one?  ;D Record sheets included!!

CN9-B CENTURION

Mass: 50 tons
Chassis: Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel
Power Plant: Magna 250
Cruising Speed: 54 kph
Maximum Speed: 86 kph
Jump Jets: None
   Jump Capacity: None
Armor: StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous with CASE
Armament:
1 Armstrong Class-B ClusterGun
2 Holly LRM-5s
2 Photech 806c Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: Bander BattleMechs
Primary Factory: Terra Firma
Communications System: Corean Transband-J9
Targeting and Tracking System: Corean B-Tech

Overview:
Corean Enterprises was eager to upgrade all existing Centurions with lostech but had to admit the expense was significant. While the CN9-D was pretty successful some garrison commands and mercenaries sought a more cost-effective upgrade for their venerable Centurions. Felifious Bander, the former Chief Tech of the 12th Star Guard and new CEO of Bander BattleMechs, approached them with one such reasonable refit kit. Envisioning the ‘Mech as it should have been during the Star League era, especially when paired with the Trebuchet, provided his inspiration for the design. Bander also effectively imparted the urgency of performing such an upgrade to other mercenary commands as Succession War era variants grew more and more obsolete each day. Not only were these relics hopelessly outmatched by Clan technology but other lostech InnerSphere designs easily surpassed them as well. Pre-orders rolled in soon after word of the project leaked which in turn lead to a licensing agreement for this new Centurion between Bander and Corean Enterprises. Thus far the arrangement has worked nicely for both companies allowing them to keep up with the increased demand.

Capabilities:
Bander was able to use common parts from other ‘Mechs to complete this ‘tough’ refit of the Centurion. Unfortunately, this means advanced materiel like the Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel has to be imported from New Avalon which causes inevitable production delays. The three-ton gyroscope from the CN9-D is usually also included in the refit kits but other like devices can be made to work with the new Magna 250 Fusion Engine. Used on the Trebuchet this power plant can be obtained from many different sources including salvaged Crabs as well as other ancient BattleMechs, Combat Vehicles, or Aerospace Fighters. Modifications to a Rawlings 250 featured on the Thrush, the GM 250-a used on the Cheetah, or the GM 250 long employed on Sabre will also do in a pinch. Seven and a half tons of StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous with CASE seen on the ENF-5D Enforcer is commonly used on the CN9-B upgrade and provides near identical armor protection as other current Centurion models despite a one-ton overall reduction. The new high-tech plating has been redistributed in order to take either a Gauss slug or a Clan ER PPC blast without sustaining critical damage. The CN9-B, like the new Bandersnatch, uses an Armstrong Class-B ClusterGun as its main weapon but can also use the Mydron Excel LB 10- X Autocannon found on the CN9-D if available. Two 2 Holly LRM-5s replace the single Luxor 3R LRM-10 used on other Centurion models saving some important mass for other necessary components. To eliminate any overheating concerns ten Double Heat Sinks were used despite their higher cost. Money saved by not using an Extra Light Engine made this a wise investment as the 250 Fusion Engine also incorporated all of these advanced freezers further eliminating critical damage concerns. The rest of the parts including myomers, electronics, and Photech 806c Medium Lasers are all from existing C99-A units.

Deployment:
Many CN9-B Centurions have been tasked to the rebuilding 12th Star Guards as part Hanse Davion’s pledge to restore that nearly shattered command. Lieutenant Colonel Napoleon Hobart was initially reluctant to accept this gift which his broken unit could never repay but the First Prince was adamant. Currently on cadre duty in the Sarna March the Twelfth trains AFFC units on their way to the Clan front in the best uses of artillery against the invaders. The new CN9-B has often been found operating as an escort for the Guards large fire support assets which includes Trebuchets obtained from the Free Worlds League. This has been done through careful trading with the Silver Hawks Coalition and Thermostar League in spite of the 3rd Marik Civil War. Demand from units with SLDF origins working in those two provinces have generated this closely guarded mercantile activity in spite of the risks. Likewise, some Davion units with a common Star League heritage have also expressed interest in this new design. However, the new CN9-B has become especially prolific in the Capellan and Sarna March were the perfect storm of engine availability and Capellan activity have generated the most need.

Variant:
Felifious Bander was so intrigued by the performance of the Binary Laser Cannon during the 3rd Marik Civil War that he created a new variant dubbed the CN9-BL which mounts a Blazer in place of the LB 10-X AC. The single Luxor 3R LRM-10 launcher returns on this model along with Artemis IV FCS featured on the CN9-D. Two Double Heat Sinks have also been added, one mounted in each side torso, to deal with the extra heat generated by weapon fire. Cheaper than the previous variant it has impressed many with its concentrated firepower which can behead enemy ‘Mechs in a single blast.

Came up with two more Centurion variants based off my originals for a pretty nice family or lance. Hope you enjoy!!

VARIANT:
Seeking ways to boost the efficiency of the CN9-B even further some Star Guard Mechwarriors replaced the LB 10-X AC with the smaller Ultra AC/5. Successful double fire from the Ultra, which has longer range, can match the firepower of the larger Autocannon. The space freed up by this weapon swap made room for a third Holly LRM-5 launcher which further supplemented long-range firepower. Bander quickly incorporated these changes into a third Centurion refit kit he dubbed the CN9-U.

Type: CN9-U Centurion
Technology Base: Inner Sphere - Level 2
Tonnage: 50

Equipment                        Mass
Internal Structure:         EndoSteel         2.5
Engine:            250            12.5
Walking MP:         5
Running MP:         8

Weapons and Ammo      Location      Critical   Tonnage
Ultra AC/5          Right Arm       5      9
Ammo (Ultra AC/5) 40   Left Torso      2      2
3 LRM-5s         Right Torso      3      6
Ammo (LRM) 48      Left Torso      2      2
CASE            Left Torso      1      .5
2 Medium Lasers      Center Torso      2      2

Cost = 4,538,000 C-bills

VARIANT:
The CN9-BR is based off weapon swaps performed by Star Guard Mechwarriors in the field who were unsatisfied with their CN9-BL. After witnessing first hand the effectiveness of ranged weaponry in combat with the Clans they replaced the Blazer with an ER PPC which extended their own striking power. Then they upgraded from an LRM-10 to an LRM-15 which further enhanced ranged firepower compensating for the loss of the Blazer. They also removed a Double Heat Sink to make room for another ton of LRM ammo which gave the BR the same staying power as the BL. Bander was impressed by this long-range fire support Centurion and quickly incorporated these changes into a fourth refit kit.

Type: CN9-BR Centurion
Technology Base: Inner Sphere - Level 2
Tonnage: 50

Equipment                        Mass
Internal Structure:         EndoSteel         2.5

Title: Re: Optimizing the Centurion
Post by: masterarminas on July 29, 2020, 12:56:54 PM
When Corean Enterprises was tasked with upgrading the CN-9A Centurion using recovered technology, there was a debate within the research labs and conference rooms.  While the proposed CN9-D was impressive, many engineers and technicians were concerned that too much emphasis was given to speed . . . and the use of a (relatively) fragile Extra-Light Fusion engine gave concerns that the new upgrade might prove to be less rugged than the older variants.

Indeed, the Centurion had long been known as a "trooper" 'Mech on the battlefields of the Inner Sphere and Near Periphery.  Not the best at delivering raw damage, not the fastest, not the toughest, but good enough in each of these categories to be counted on as a rugged, dependable BattleMech.

Accordingly, Corean offered the AFFS (and the Federated Commonwealth) an alternative design:  the CN9-B.

The CN9-B retains the Nissan 200 standard fusion engine of the CN9-A, but incorporates an Endo-Steel II internal structure to save mass.  This allowed the design team to add two tons of Star Guard III armor plating, making these new Centurions even more rugged and survivable on the battlefield.  The old Luxor AC-10 autocannon was replaced with a Mydron Excel LB-10X Autocannon, saving another ton which the design team used to add Artemis IV Fire-Control Systems to the Luxor 3R LRM-10 launcher.  Internally, all ammunition was moved to the right torso which was equipped with CASE (Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment) increasing the odds of the MechWarrior surviving even in the event of an ammunition explosion.  Both Photech 806c Medium Lasers were retained (one still mounted firing to the rear).

Although these were only moderate improvements in weapon range, accuracy, and flexibility, Corean design engineers (and AFFS consultants) believed that the increased survivability and ruggedness of the design were well worth the cost.  And without an expensive XL engine, the AFFS could procure more than twice as many 'Mechs for the same expenditure of funds.

The AFFS procurement board was impressed by Corean's arguments, but in the end decided to field test both the CN9-B and CN9-D for further evaluation under combat conditions by veteran MechWarriors.  Eventually, it was planned to concentrate production on one design or the other, but the Clan Invasion changed that strategy as the AFFS (and Federated Commonwealth) found it needed every last 'Mech it could produce.

Consequently, the lower-cost CN9-B Centurion can be found throughout the Federated Suns and Federated Commonwealth serving alongside the higher-tech CN9-D and the new Enforcers being produced by Achernar.

The CN9-BH is a similar upgrade to the "Heavy" variant of the Centurion.  The Mydron Excel LB-10X Autocannon has been removed and replaced with a Luxor Devastator 20 AC-20 (with three tons of ammunition).  To accommodate this heavy weapon, the design team had to removed the Luxor 3R LRM-10 and ammunition, replacing it with a Luxor 3L LRM-5 launcher and a single ton of ammunition (and forgoing the use of Artemis IV FCS).  An additional heat sink has been added as well (for a total of 11).

While some MechWarriors love the heavy firepower of this design (especially in an urban environment), many believe that the reduction in range is a fatal flaw.  Which is why Corean also introduced the CN9-BG which replaces the AC-20 and extra heat sink with a Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifle.  All other weapons remain the same as the CN9-BH.

Next, Corean offered the CN9-BL version for extended operations where ammunition resupply might be problematic.  This version retains the Luxor 3R LRM-10 with Artemis IV FCS (and two tons of ammunition for 24 missile salvos) and the two center torso mounted Photech 806c Medium Lasers, but replaces the autocannon with a Blazefire Sweetshot ER Large Laser in the right arm, a Sutel Precision Line Medium Pulse Laser (also in the right arm), two Defiance D5S Small Pulse Lasers (left arm), and a third Photech 806c Medium Laser (in the head).  The single heat sinks are replaced with double-strength freezers and three additional heat sinks added.  Although still capable of overheating, the margin is minor even on a running Alpha Strike . . . and Corean emphasizes that given the inaccuracy of LRMs at ranges where the Small Pulse Lasers come to bear, it is unlikely that both systems will be used simultaneously.  Of course, on the battlefield, most MechWarriors will push their machine to the limits and beyond . . . even if the firing solutions are "iffy", especially when one final weapon strike could mean the difference between victory or defeat.

Finally, Corean introduced the CN9-BL2, which removes the ER Large Laser, the Medium Pulse Laser, and both Small Pulse Lasers to install a Blazefire Doubleshot Binary Laser Cannon in the right arm.  Although shorter ranged, this weapon inflicts nearly as much damage as a Gauss Rifle and is favored by some MechWarriors.  Especially since this one of the few Inner Sphere weapons that can remove the head of a BattleMech in a single shot, even if it has not been damaged previously.  This variant retains the LRM-10 (with Artemis IV) and all three Photech 806c Medium Lasers (one still firing to the rear), along with all thirteen double-strength heat sinks.  While some consider the CN9-BL2 to be oversinked, MechWarriors in the field appreciate being able to use the Blazer Cannon without roasting themselves!

Post by: Takiro on January 11, 2021, 03:16:47 PM
This contest conducted in late July 2019 saw twenty-six (26) design entries submitted by eight ( 8 ) designers (2 Bradshaw, 4 Irose, 1 David CGB, 1 drakensis, 6 Abele, 2 Ice Hellion, 5 Takiro, 5 masterarminas). In perhaps what might be a first during these challenges the CN9-D set out in TRO 3050 is actually pretty freaking good giving us some solid canon competition. I just may keep this variant in production in the Salient Horizon universe depending of course on the results of this contest. Speed was definitely a factor in my grading here as the 4/6 movement profile just felt obsolete to me especially in light of the Clans. To have a Medium BattleMech move that slowly really hampers its survivability on the battlefield and leads me to think of the slow blow-up machines shaking around in the BattleTech cartoon for the invaders target practice. Lastly, I’d like to apologize for the delay again as I lost all the data half way through this comprehensive evaluation but I’m proud to say for the second time in a row every single entry qualified for the competition making this contest extremely close and tough to grade. Thanks again for all your terrific efforts in this challenge and now let’s down to it.

PASSABLE

16. CN10-M (Abele)
This FWLM upgrade of the Centurion finished last in my review because of the Nissan 200 XL (4/6) which really drew my ire. I really don’t like this design choice for its high cost (7.5 million C-bills), slow speed, and increased vulnerability. Yeah, you get more throw weight for weaponry and armor but I at least need jump jets for enhanced mobility or long-range heavy weight weaponry. The popgun Autocannon/2 (45) is long range certainly but is more harasser than heavy weight even though it is paired with an LRM-20 (18) linked to an Artemis IV FCS. Solid secondary weaponry though with the traditional two Medium Lasers joined by a Medium Pulse. Like the Guardian ECM Suite but I find the TAG a third oddity here on this entry. I like the Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel chassis, the ten Double Heat Sinks, and ten tons of standard armor (160 factor) with CASE but the three issues I have mentioned are just too big to ignore. So, I am sorry Abele I have to place it here, better luck next time.

15. CN10-H & CN10-G (Abele)
Two variants made by Corean Enterprises of Augusta finish next to last for me as both share the GM 200 XL Engine (4/6) with the CN10-M. As before I really don't like this choice as it costs a bunch of C-bills (7.5 million) while keeping the Centurion slow and vulnerable. I like the use of the standard Corean Model K7 chassis, ten Double Heat Sinks, and advanced ferro-fibrous armor but what sets them apart from the C10-M is two key things. The 'H' is mobile with for Jump Jets that adds another level of maneuverability to the Centurion while the 'G' is armed with a Gauss Rifle. This massive main gun can threaten any Mech from range and makes the Centurion a potent sniper. As a result, I feel like they are a step up but just barely from the CN10-M and so finish here.

14. CN9-DT & CN9-DZ (Irose)
I might be being overly harsh here or this could be an indication of how good the competition was with these two slow entries finishing fourteenth. The GM 200 Fusion (4/6) is a cheap and hardy option but I wonder aloud; is it obsolete on the Centurion given the introduction of Star League and Clan technology? The DT produced at Jalestar Aerospace on Panpour is supposed to be the Davion lower tech trooper variant which addresses the shortcomings of the initial 3049 lostech upgrade while the DZ variant combines the best of both variants (DR & DT). I like the Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel chassis serving as the core for both and the ten and a half tons of standard armor (160 factor) [ERROR, should be 168?] with CASE is solid. The DT has 10 Single Heat Sinks and is armed with LB 10-X AC (20), LRM-10 (24) with Artemis IV FCS, two Medium Lasers while the DZ has 12 (24) Double Heat Sinks and is armed with an ER Large Laser, LRM-20 (12) with Artemis IV FCS, and three Medium Lasers. Unfortunately, I just didn’t feel that these slow Centurions had enough firepower and armor to justify their existence.

13. CN9-CMM (David CGB)
This Capellan March variant focused on city fighting is interesting even though it is still powered by the GM 200 Fusion Engine (4/6) which makes it pretty slow. I would liked to have seen jump jets on this urban combatant which would have provided additional mobility. An EndoSteel chassis, a dozen Double Heat Sinks, a Beagle Active Probe, and a Guardian ECM Suite make up the lostech components of this Centurion. I liked the advanced electronics package which would provide advantages and the advanced lightweight skeleton but at least one of the Double Heat Sinks could be removed. Ten and a half tons of standard armor (168 factor) with CASE is near max protection which is always good. Five SRM-6s makes for a solid short-range arsenal but with only three tons of ammo (45 shots) it only has nine rounds of fire. So, there is some good here but I’m afraid it is outweighed by the bad hence its placement here.

CONTENDERS

12. CN9-B series (masterarminas)
These Federated Suns and FedCom variants which is lower tech than the CN9-D was still a bit too slow to me but I understand the trooper concept. Every model uses the Nissan 200 Fusion (4/6) which is cheap but almost too slow on the rapidly modernizing battlefields of the Salient Horizon setting. I approve of the Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel chassis and the 10.5 tons of standard armor (168 factor) with CASE which provides solid weight saving with excellent durability. The base CN9-B uses ten Single Heat Sinks to cool a low heat arsenal of an LB 10-X AC (20), LRM-10 (24) with Artemis IV FCS, and two Medium Lasers which isn't too shabby. I wasn't as fond of the CN9-BH which is similar to the ‘AH’ or Heavy variant which utilizes eleven Single Heat Sinks to cool a massive Autocannon/20 (15), an LRM-5 (24), and two Medium Lasers. This is the least practical variant to me cause unless you run into its short firepower it can either be avoided or decimated from range. The CN9-BG or Gauss variant is much more attractive because of the throw range of the Gauss Rifle which replaces the AC/20 and a Heat Sink of the BH. The two energy variants, the BL and BL2, utilize thirteen Double Heat Sinks to dissipate the massive heat blooms from their main guns. The BL which is similar to the ‘AL’ or Long variant is armed with an ER Large Laser, LRM-10 (24) with Artemis IV FCS, three Medium Lasers, Medium Pulse, and two Small Pulses while the BL2 or Blazer variant has that weapon as its main gun backed by an LRM-10 (24) with Artemis IV FCS and three Medium Lasers. All in all, not horrible but just too slow especially in comparison to the competition here.

11. CN9-M (Irose)
This Lyran refit introduced by Bowie Industries of Alarion based on the CN9-AL variant is intriguing. While I didn't love the Nissan 200 Fusion (4/6) for its low-speed approach the idea of House Steiner picking up this design perhaps in part to foster FedCom unity or at the very least operations. Using the standard Corean Model K7 chassis this retro package is protected by ten and a half tons of standard armor (168 factor). Perhaps I might have utilized ferro-fibrous to provide some weight savings but not bad though. I like the ER PPC being used as the main gun here as it provides exceptionally long-range firepower which is supplemented by an LRM-10 (24) with Artemis IV FCS. I probably would have uprated that battery to a 15 rack rather than adding a third Medium Laser and a Small Pulse. I feel that the slow speed of this design needs the most long-range firepower as possible. A dozen Double Heat Sinks do a nice job cooling the arsenal and provides a bit of lostech goodness to the base design. Nice try Irose, unfortunately not good enough.

10. CN9-LCG1 & CN9-LCG2 (Abele)
These two variants from the Lexington Combat Group form an effective combat duo with the ‘1’ being a long-range support asset and the ‘2’ being the short-ranged slugger. These refits utilize the standard Corean Model K7 chassis and the 250 XL Engine (5/8). This leads to some concerns about the 9 million C-bills and 8.5 million C-bills respective price tags which is a lot. Vulnerability also becomes as issue but at least it adds some speed to the Centurion which I think is desperately needed. Both designs are also protected by eight and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) with CASE as well as a Guardian ECM Suite which is quite solid. The variants also utilize Double Heat Sinks with the ‘2’ featuring only the base ten freezers while the ‘1’ has added one more because of its armament. An ER PPC, LRM-15 (24) with Artemis IV FCS, Medium Laser, and Medium Pulse Laser provide that higher heat long range firepower. The ‘2' on the other hand is armed with the massive AC/20 (15), SRM-4 (25), and two Medium Lasers which provides close hard-hitting firepower. On the battlefield in tandem these variants would be quite formidable and I like the Lexington Combat Group angle. That being said it is probably a bit too expensive for them to undertake and I'd rather go with a less expensive competitor who did it a little better. However, I'd like to use the Lexington development in a revised fluff piece, nice job.

NEAR MISSES

9. CN9-A2 (Ice Hellion)
This new less sophisticated AFFC Gauss variant made by Jalastar Aerospace of Panpour wasn't too shabby even when powered by the small Nissan 200 Fusion Engine (4/6). The huge Gauss Rifle really balances the lower movement factor with long-range hitting power. The standard Corean Model K7 chassis and ten Single Heat Sinks remain along with eight tons of standard armor (143 factor) with CASE. The remaining armament of two LRM-5s (24) and a Medium Laser is a little weak but I can forgive it somewhat thanks to the big Gauss. Overall, I like it Ice but that 4/6 speed for the modern Centurion was just too much for me to get past. Sorry bud.

8. CN9-D2 (Ice Hellion)
This new AFFC Gauss variant made by Coean Enterprises of New Avalon was a real contender folks. Using the advanced lightweight Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel chassis and GM 300 XL Engine (6/9) frees up a lot of weight for that massive main gun along with two tons of ammunition. Two LRM-5s (24) rather than the single LRM-10 saves another ton while one of the Medium Lasers was also reduced to a Small Laser. Ten Single Heat Sinks really don't need upgrading with this arsenal's low heat scale. Finally, eight tons of ferro-fibrous (143 factor) with CASE provide pretty good protection. I could nitpick a few minor negatives but this entry was very solid. However, other designs beat you out here Ice which is pretty tough I know. Hang in there and better luck next time.

NEEDS WORK

7. CN9-MH (Abele)
This refit of existing Centurions by the Marian Hegemony, which is a very 'Nova Roma' favorite, utilizes a Blazer as its main weapon. This is certainly something I can see especially given their involvement in the 3rd Marik Civil War. I can somewhat excuse the use of the GM 200 Fusion Engine (4/6) as the Hegemony is not that technological advanced. Plus keeping the cost to only 3.5 million C-bills is a bonus while making it highly durable. Likewise, the standard Corean Model K7 chassis is also retained along with the LRM-10 (12) and two Medium Lasers. I like the eight and half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) but not the sixteen Single Heat Sinks. I know that they make sense given the Hegemony's backward tech level but they somewhat hamper this variant's battlefield operations. Marik merchants could have provide freezers, aka Double Heat Sinks, in my opinion for a price drastically improving its effectiveness. Indeed, such an arrangement could still be in the works and may eventually happen. For these reasons I am rejecting the entry at this time but would like to refine it for near future introduction, nice job Abele.

6. CN9-DK (Bradshaw)
This cooperative effort between the Federated Commonwealth and the Draconis Combine to produce a high-tech command BattleMech is probably too much of a stretch but might happen thanks to the Clan threat. Using existing EndoSteel chassis and a 250 XL Engine (5/8) this Command Centurion frees enough tonnage for a whole bunch of special equipment. This includes a Command Console, C3 Master Computer, Beagle Active Probe, Guardian ECM Suite, and a Remote Sensors/Dispenser. I might whittle this assortment of advanced electronics down a bit as the Remote Sensors could really be left to a dedicated scout and the Command Console to a larger command asset such as one with two C3 Master Computers. I would have liked to have seen a bit more of a long-range punch as well to add to the ER PPC which is a solid main gun. LRMs would have been good but the three Medium Lasers and Anti-Missile System (12) feels more defensive too me. A dozen Double Heat Sinks do a good job of dispersing heat on the design and ten tons of standard armor plating (160 factor) provide solid protection. So, I like the concept of a Command Centurion which perhaps could include ComStar in its development to bring the fight to the Clans. Right now, I'd say this effort is ultimately experimental but I'd like to see more work on what could one day become the CN9-C Lance Commander.

GLADIATORS

5. CN9-U (Bradshaw)
The Urban Peacemaker is a wild write up from the distorted mind of Bradshaw which I gotta say is fun at the very least. Using an EndoSteel chassis, which would be available, the design is powered by a 250 Fusion Engine (5/8). This is a great move especially when combined with ten Double Heat Sinks that are completely housed within this durable power plant. It also makes the design cheap too, costing just 4.75 million C-bills, which is another big plus. Nine tons of ferro-fibrous (161 factor) with CASE provides the maximum amount of protection for this BattleMech. Armed with a Large Pulse Laser, two SRM-4s (50 shots), a Flamer, and a Hatchet it has descent short range pop which is augmented by a good hack. A Beagle Active Probe rounds out this intriguing submission which really grew on me the more I reviewed it. Plus, it feels like a less advanced version of my Invictus but in line with other hatchet wielding machines. I’d like to refine it a little more for Solaris and limited deployment elsewhere in the Salient Horizon universe. However, this gladiatorial design derived from the Centurion will need a name of its own and I will work on fleshing out Slocum Joe’s for Solaris (perhaps a Corean front) as well. Good job and congrats on this special fifth place Bradshaw!

4. INV-1DS Invictus (Takiro)
This NAIS AC/20 concept design based on the Centurion will also see limited deployment in the arenas of Solaris VII and perhaps a few wealthy notable warriors beyond. I am thinking that this is leading to a Corean facility on the Game World which would be quite advanced. Considering it features an advanced Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel chassis and a GM 300 XL Engine (6/9) with Triple Strength Myomere (7/11) it is quite high tech and likely very expensive. It also has limited ammunition for its fearsome main gun, the massive AC/20 (10), which probably gives the AFFC enough cause for concern to pass on wider scale deployment at least for now. Perhaps deemed experimental some regiments like the Knights Exemplar (with a Hatchet Lance or Company) or Team Banzai (testing new designs in coordination with NAIS) will field it still. Of course, future military innovations like the Ultra AC/20 and ER Mediums could be tested on this machine first and perhaps best. The NAIS Cadet Cadre could therefore be a recipient or perhaps Albion which is competing with them. Still the Mech is likely pretty rare and if used in the arenas probably comes with the blessing of Kai Allard-Liao which would be a special event. Still there might be one. More likely a super-rich Lyran, Davion, or perhaps St. Ives Mechwarrior could afford one too but these would-be rare cases I would think. Love to hear your thoughts as I am still thinking about the original deployment rewrite that has Morgan sit down with Hanse to tell him that the Invictus just won’t work in the main body of the AFFC.

WINNERS

3. CN9-B (Takiro)
Of the ‘Centurion Troopers’ entered in this challenge I thought my own refits from newly born Bander BattleMechs of Terra Firma was the best. The rugged ‘B’ series are a low-cost option built for mercenaries who want to improve this BattleMech’s performance without an Extra-Light (XL) Engine. Thanks to old Magna 250 Engines (5/8) obtained mostly from old Trebuchets which have been refitted or other sources costs have been capped for these war machines at about five million C-bills. The movement upgrade combined with the durable nature of the standard power plant make this Trooper highly attractive to me. Weight savings for these variants comes from the advanced lightweight Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel chassis imported from New Avalon. Also imported from New Avalon for these refits is the seven and a half tons of StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous with CASE utilized by the ENF-5D Enforcer. This armor protection while lighter than others is, I feel, sufficient for this Centurion whose smaller power plant makes it more rugged. The main model CN9-B uses ten Double Heat Sinks and is armed with a LB 10-X AC (20), 2 LRM-5s (48), and two Medium Lasers. I will add distribution authorization for military units with First Star Heritage (like the Illician Lancers and Lexington Combat Group) which could also include FedCom commands and perhaps even ComGuards. The CN9-BL which uses two more Double Heat Sinks than the base model to cool the Blazer is rarer and I will officially redesignate it the BZ for ‘Bander Blazer’ often used by mercenaries perhaps operating the 3rd Marik Civil War. A more common refit would be the CN9-U which keeps the base ten Double Heat Sinks for its smaller Ultra AC/5 (40) and 3 LRM-5s (48). I am going to change the designation here as well to the BU for ‘Bander Ultra’. Finally, the CN9-BR has one more Double Heat Sink than the base model to help cool the ER PPC and LRM-15 (24) with Artemis IV FCS. This variant probably in use by mercenaries engaged on the Clan front will be redesignated the BL for ‘Bander Long’ in honor of the original AL variant. All in all, I really like this design and hope to incorporate other elements from your entries into it.

2. CN9-M (drakensis)
Capitalizing on the success of others is such a solid strategy for the merchants of the Free Worlds League. Inspired by the battlefield exploits of Kai’s upgraded lostech Yen Lo Wang this design also draws upon the arms deal between House Marik and the Steiner-Davion’s to help fight the Clans and the original manufacturer (Corean Enterprises or at least their satellite plant MacAdams-Suharno on Stewart) of the Centurion. All these story elements tie in a nice design which uses a Corean-II Deluxe EndoSteel chassis (which appears to be slightly different from the advanced FedCom molds) and the Magna 250 XL Engine (5/8). This power plant while expensive is readily available thanks to the lostech TBT-7M and provides the necessary speed increase for me along with the space for the massive Gauss Rifle. Supplied by a three-ton ammo bin (24 shots) this huge main gun makes the Centurion into an excellent sniper whose long-range firepower is supplemented by twin LRM-5s. These smaller missile racks replace the usually LRM-10 found on the Centurion in very Marik Salient Horizon fashion. The two Medium Lasers commonly found on the Centurion are also retained to supplement its firepower which is good since its other weapons all have minimum ranges. Since its heat profile is pretty low only ten Single Heat Sinks are retained along with nine tons of standard armor (144 factor). This is a half-ton more than the CN9-D but it lacks a CASE which does concern me especially for its two-ton LRM ammo (48 shots total). However, all the goodness outweighs that minor spec which even throws in a nice line about the Stewart Dragoons getting this Mech. Congrats drakensis on the silver medal here, nice job!!

1. CN9-DR (Irose)
My favorite entry was this Federated Commonwealth (Davion) high tech raider which optimizes the initial 3049 lostech upgrade produced at Corean Enterprises on New Avalon. It retains the CN9-D’s advanced lightweight Corean Model KL77 EndoSteel chassis along with its GM 300 XL Engine (6/9) as a very solid core especially for a medium raider which is design focus here. The DR upgrades the Heat Sinks to lostech Double strength ‘freezers’ which greatly enhances the Mech’s dissipation rates. This allows for the replacement of the LB 10-X AC with the much hotter but much lighter ER Large Laser. I know this is a departure for the Davion loving Autocannon users out there but it makes a tremendous amount of sense especially in combating the Clan invaders. The extended range laser uses no ammunition eliminating the need for resupply and even has a slightly longer reach (one hex). While the damage does fall off from 10 to 8, I really think this trade off is worth it especially when considering that the eight (8) tons of savings allows you to do so much more. Like the enlargement of the LRM rack from a 10 to a 15 and the addition of a third ton of ammunition which enables a total of two dozen missile salvos. The Artemis IV FCS is also retained so this Centurion has better long-range firepower than the CN9-D. Secondary armament not only retains the two center torso mounted Medium Lasers but adds another in the left arm plus a Small Pulse in the head. These can help supplement the main weaponry if carefully regulated as they can produce a massive heat bloom (27 heat) on an Alpha Strike. More realistically they can deal with Elementals or deal with any opposition that makes it inside the LRM’s minimum range. Defensively, a ton and a half of armor (now 10 tons in total with a 160 factor) is also added along with a Guardian ECM Suite. So, this Centurion is better offensively and defensively as well as serving a necessary purpose right now (raiding the Clan Occupation Zone) for the Federated Commonwealth. As a result, it is the clear winner in this contest and will officially become the CN9-FC for the Salient Horizon setting. Congratulations Irose on the gold medal this time around!!!

I'm glad you liked the CN9-DR.  As to your comments about speed, obviously I think a 4/6 trooper mech is viable- I did design 3 of them for the competition.  From  my view this is the argument that happened in the real world during the 1960s about tank design.  You have 2 different schools of thought.  The US/British view was to heavily armor their tanks, at the expense of mobility.  The French and German view (at the time) was to sacrifice armor protection for increased speed/mobility, relying on the higher speed for protection.

We have the same argument here- a faster Centurion, featuring an expensive/more vulnerable XL engine versus a slower/more survivable model.  Personally I tend to dislike XL engines, particularly on heavier mechs, I'm not a fan of the increased vulnerability and in the real world cost would be an issue.   But there are times when it makes sense - the DR was designed as raider, where speed is more important so I though the use of an XL engine was justifiable.  On the other hand the Trooper model needs to be able to survive as long as possible since you don't want the mech knocked out because of the loss of a side torso.

In the end, both views have their advantages and disadvantages- just figured I'd share my thoughts on the design process.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the design process here Irose. I write these reviews to provide insight into my reasoning for the 'optimum design' and clearly the DR hit the mark here. As I reviewed each entry it became clear to me that speed was a major factor as for an InnerSphere Medium BattleMech such as the Centurion or it better mount something like a Gauss with major throw power at range to make up for it. To be clear, armor was a major factor as well but was indeed mitigated by superior 5/8 speed which I contend is a big improvement over 4/6 especially for a Medium. As we get to Heavies in the near future - 4/6 speed is probably going to be the norm for the InnerSphere whose Optimized war machines tend to be slower but carry max armor compared to the Clans Quicksilver designs. ;)

I'm of the opposite opinion, I prefer the heavier mechs to have XL as they are usually more well protected. I feel its better for a few Mechs with XL then tons of little ones that are easier to kill and thus replace running around with them.

I write these reviews to provide insight into my reasoning for the 'optimum design' and clearly the DR hit the mark here.

Which is the problem here (not the DR but the other part of your sentence). I doubt that they could optimise every 'Mech produced here and there in the Inner Sphere.
First there is the limited supply of advanced tech. Second, we would end up doing vanilla 'Mechs, ie 'Mechs that are all the same (just look at the 3 classical 55 tonners). Third, it is not fun (unless you are an Ice Hellion at heart).

To both yours and Bradshaw's comment I say it depends on the Mech's role and for the Centurion we had three answers (actually four if you wanna count gladiator). Trooper, Sniper, and Raider all won the day here. All have varying levels of power, weaponry, and even armor to survive on the modern battlefield against the Clans. They all bring something to the table and in their roles are the very best at what they do.

I can see XL Engines working on larger Mechs again depending on their role.

I have the opposite view.  Lighter 'Mechs need XL engines because they are already fragile.  Heavier (Inner Sphere and Star League designs) don't . . . the increased risk of critical damage outweighs their improved firepower (most of the time).   Now, this is not always the case, but generally speaking, a Heavy or Assault weight design should be just fine moving at 4/6/x or 3/5/x when using ES and/or FF and DHS without risking six extra engine critical hit spaces. Especially in designs with max (or near max) armor.

Light and mediums, on the other hand, tend to depend on speed rather than armor as defense.  (To a degree, at least, there are always exceptions.)  But there are slow moving lights and mediums (relatively speaking, of course) that break that rule.  The Centurion is one of those.

You have to ask, is the extra speed worth the increased cost and increased risk of critical engine damage to be worth it?  Some will say yes, I, on the other hand, tend to say no.  Because the Centurion has always been more of a trooper 'Mech . . . the slow moving in your face 'Mech that just keeps on coming until you put them down hard.  Having an XL engine just seems wrong . . . even if you are moving faster.

That being said, if you can move faster WITHOUT an XL engine (like Irose did), then it is all good.  I've got no problems with how this contest turned out, but did want to say that having an XL for the sake of just having an XL is . . . bothersome for me.  At least for the Inner Sphere using Star League tech.  It really has to be worth it to justify that cost.

Now Clantech is different . . . not quite as much risk (4 extra crits compared to 6) and a viable speed bump over IS/SL tech BattleMechs (especially when combined with Clan ES and FF).  But,. for the most part and as a general rule of thumb, IS 'Mechs in the Heavy and Assault weight classes should not use an XL because it poses a greater threat to them in comparison to the armor they can carry despite the weight savings.  I'd rather use ES and FF to save tonnage for those two weight categories . . . and some mediums.

Like your "Fastback" Hunchback . . . no XL.  But same weaponry just greater speed and armor and resilience without using an XL engine.

Just my thoughts.

Its funny how the InnerSphere Extra-Light (XL) has gone from perhaps the first lostech item (Double Heat Sinks are up there though) I'd think of enhancing a design back in the day to now the last resort and then if only absolutely necessary. EndoSteel is the best way to gain tonnage now for me but realistically it would probably be much more daunting then replacing Power Plants. So perhaps there is a bit of real world seepage to the return of the XL Engine followed by its sideways replacement by other lostech innovations.

And I really like that 'Fastback' Hunchback nickname. Great post MA!

MA hit it on the head for me. Lights and some mediums can never be armored enough.  They survive by speed ( for the most part). So if you can use an XL engine to increase the speed while keeping some armor and enough weapons or electronics that is worth the cost to me.  A heavy mech is not going to be getting a lot of to hit modifiers so they are more likely to be hit and take damage.

One of my favorite mechs is grasshopper particularly the 5N variant. It’s a zombie mech that just won’t stop until you completely destroy it.

Playing MWO has definitely soured me on ISXLs. Both for the vulnerability and the cost (I can barely ever afford them)
