Title: Optimizing the Clint
Post by: Takiro on March 29, 2020, 10:57:18 PM
The fifteenth optimization challenge for the InnerSphere stays in the forty-ton weight class with the Clint. Not as fast as our first two forties the Clint is more of a fighter who says 'go ahead, make my day'. I didn't really appreciate this design until BattleTech: Shattered Dawn came along and Irose really opened my eyes to just how versatile it was. Let's see what you guys can do with this Medium BattleMech which I expect to have a lot of different variants.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a Mech of the Week Article over on CBT of the CLNT-*** Clint but there is always sarna!

Design Criteria
Design: Clint Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 40 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy.
Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday April 10th, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

Expanding into the Federated Suns was seen as a gamble by stockholders of Defiance Industries, but with a large amount Davion space relatively untapped resource wise the Lyran behemoth was more than able to take advantage of this fact. Diversifying the company and creating the Defiance WarWorks name in Davion space made sense with the tax incentives they were able to gain as a "new" company on the poetically chosen planet of Defiance. Easing the friction caused by this moving into traditionally Davion weapon contractors territory was at first very severe but actions and backroom deals were made and the result was that certain systems are subcontracted out to others such as the GM 280 XL engine from Johnston Industries or the communications and targeting systems from Achernar BattleMechs.

The design itself is something that has thrilled former Clint 'Mech Techs. Long known as a technician's nightmare the Defiance design has basically started from the ground up, but at a cost. The original Clint's were known as being designed as a cheap recon unit, Defiance is hoping to change that reputation. Originally having a top speed of 97.2 km/h, this new variant tops that at 118.8 kph, while maintaining the 180 meter jump radius. Utilizing the latest in Lostech the DW variant incorporates Defiance's own blend of Endo Steel and Durallex Ferro Fibrous armor. This with the inclusion of the larger but lighter GM XL engine gives a lot of versatility to its supplementing weaponry. Changing the role of the Clint from scout to scout hunter is the DW's role. Incorporating both the Defiance ER PPC and Large Laser gives the design a much more potent punch than many other designs in its weight category. With its increased speed, armor and firepower the first opponent that believes this is the old Clint is waiting for a rude awakening.

A common field refit seen by mercenaries and periphery forces utilizing the Clint Battlemech. A kit that takes some effort with the conversion of the integrated heat sinks in the older Pitban 240 engines but easily handled by veteran Mech Techs. Beginning by replacing the ammo dependent Armstrong J11 Autocannons with a variety of ER Large Lasers that have begun filtering their way down now even to some of the lesser powers throughout the Inner Sphere. The smaller size and tonnage of the laser gives the option of adding another medium laser to the design, additional armor coverage and an additional heat sink. All these positives can make it obvious why this variant is quickly gaining popularity among Clint pilots.

Not able to be completed in time for Battle of Tukayyid, the Comstar variant of the Clint coming from Skopel Mechworks of Terra, is based off intelligence gained by ROM about second line variants seen on some Clan held worlds. Fixing the issues with the original framework with the changes to the Skopel Template structure the designers were able to return to the original design and add the Autocannon 10 back to the frame. Utilizing the 'Mech-mounted shotgun gives the design much greater flexibility on the battlefield swapping back and forth between the critical seeking cluster rounds and the armor piercing standard slugs. Unable to keep the speed from the original design was the drawback to this increase in firepower but it was a sacrifice many felt fine making. Skopel with the assistance of ROM have been able to redesign the Sloane 220 Lockover System thanks to finding references to the schematics sent in old HPG transmissions intercepted during the 1st Succession War. Four Martell medium lasers back up the Imperator Code Red LB-X Autocannon.

A variety of the Clint thats found some popularity as a refit coming from the Bell Refit Yards. Intelligence coming out of Capellan space talks about a variant incorporating pulse laser technologies, Davion looking to see what might be possible have begun a small project at experimenting with the design. Long known for multiple variants due to the need to replace many of the inferior components, engineers have put together a rather serviceable design. Utilizing smaller captured Nissan 200 engines has lowered the speed of the design but allowed for the inclusion of a larger package of weaponry and equipment. Seeing the new design as a defender and not as a scout the long ranges of the AC/5 were not needed instead the Large Pulse Laser fits the role as primary weaponry for the design with its increase accuracy collateral damage is lessened as the 'Mech fights in urban settings. An additional Medium Laser was also added to the design to finalize its offensive improvements, to fill its role as urban hunter though an active probe system has been added along with remote sensors to allow it monitor a much larger area.

Thinking of some Clint Eastwood easter eggs and a particular variant myself that will be asking 'Do you feel lucky? Well do ya, punk!'

Now where can I drop Callahan in the InnerSphere?

The Clint, despite being relatively rare, has always been a popular design with the Taurian Defense Forces.  Used a cavalry mech, the Clint is commonly found in many of the Concordat's lighter units, such as the Red Chasseurs and the Hyades Light Infantry.  Unfortunately the Clint suffers from the problem of being a maintenance nightmare due to the non-standard parts used by Andoran Industries.  In an effort to improve the reliability and availability of the Clint, the TDF began a major reconstruction program.  Stripping the mechs down to a bare chassis, they were rebuilt using new, readily available parts that would improve the performance of the mech and simplify repairs.

The modifications to the Clint start with the heart of the mech it's fusion engine and motive systems.  While the Pitban 240 is a common model and highly reliable, the mech's Gyro is not.  While some thought was give to simply replacing the Gyro with the same model used by the Griffin produced Vandenberg Mechanized Industries on Illiushin, the TDF eventually decided on a more radical modification.  In an effort to free up more room for additional weaponry and armor, the Pitban 240 was replaced with the Warner 200E produced by Magna for the Lightning Aerospace fighter. The old balky gyro was replaced with the new one that is being developed for the Concordat's Hatchetman.  The combination of the smaller engine and gyro freed up significant room for other improvements.

Always light armored, new Clint features 7.5 tons of Durallex Light Ferro-Fibrous armor.  This more then doubles the protection of the Clint, allowing to survive multiple hits. Complementing the heavier armor is a new more powerful weapons array.  The main complaint about the Clint's weapons is the lack of ammunition for the Armstrong Autocannon.  To solve this problem the auto cannon has been replaced with a Donal PPC. This provides a hard hitting, long range punch that does not rely on ammunition.  The Clint retains the 2 Martell Medium Lasers and mounts a Shannon Fore SRM 4 Launcher to provide an additional punch at close range.  To protect the mech from an ammo explosion the SRM ammo is stored in a CASE protected ammo bin.

Other changes to the Clint include the use of Double Heatsinks to compensate for the heat output of the new weapons array,  the replacement of the old Andoran Model JJIII with newer Rawlings 54 models and the replacement of the Radon R1 comm system with the Neil 5000.  The Clint does retain the superb Sloane 220 Lockover System which is considered one of the finest targeting systems ever developed.

Having completed testing a prototype, the TDF has began retrofitting all of the Clints at Pinard Protectorates Limited facility on MacLeod Land. There has been some discussion of a possible variant that replaces the Shannon Fore launcher with a Delta Dart LRM 5 launcher for additional long range firepower.

The CLNT-2-4D is an experimental model that has been developed by the New Avalon Institute of Science.  Based on the original prototype Clint, the CLNT-1-2R, which mounted a Armstrong Buster AC/10, the new model attempts to improve the firepower of the Clint while avoiding the problems that made the -2R a failure. The original CLNT-1-2R was forced to make a number of design compromises in order to mount the heavier autocannon, the NAIS engineers avoided these issues by replacing the old Pitban fusion engine with the new GM 240XL engine, while requiring more space in the mech, it significantly reduced the weight of the engine, freeing up more room for other improvements.

The biggest change was the replacement of the old Armstrong Autocannon with the new Mydron Excel LB-10X.  This doubled the firepower of the Clint, giving the mech a big gun to go with it's highly accurate Sloane 220 Lockover Targeting System.  To prevent the flaws that faced the -2R, the chassis has been strengthen, allowing the Clint to withstand repeated firings of the Mydron Excel.  To ensure adequate endurance on the battlefield, the Clint now carries 2 tons of ammunition for the autocannon.  The ammunition is stored in large ten round clips, similar to the Enforcer, making reloading a quick process.  The secondary weaponry is unchanged from the CLNT-2-3T.

The other major change to the Clint is the replacement of the old Durallex Medium armor with 6 tons of StarGuard Ferro-Fibrous Armor.  This provides a nearly 50% increase in armor protection, allowing the Clint to better survive on the modern battlefield.

The new Clint has been undergoing trials at the NAIS where it has received rave reviews from the Mechwarriors assigned to the program.  There are rumors that the AFFC is looking to establish a refit yard on Bell at the site of the old Andoran Industries to upgrade the existing Clints.  It is believed that the CLNT-2-4D modifications will be preformed at this facility.

There is also some rumors that the Clint may be restored to production in the near future.  The NAIS design team has suggested that a production variant of the CLNT-2-4D, the CLNT-2-5D. This model would replace the original Andoran Model III Chassis with an endosteel version and use the weight savings to provide a CASE for the mech ammunition and an addition 1.5 tons of armor.

The CLNT-2-3Z was developed by the Capellan Confederation after one of their engineers realized the stupidity of the CLNT-2-3U upgrade.  While the replacement of the ammo dependent Armstrong Autocannon with the more powerful Magna Firestar ER PPC was a significant upgrade, the replacement of the Martell Medium Lasers with pulse laser was, at best, a dumb idea.  The short range of the of Medium Pulse Lasers, combined with the Clint's use as a sniper or in hit and run operations, made the pulse lasers nearly worthless.  After the first several refits of the -3T into the -3U it was suggested that it might be better to keep the original Martell Medium Lasers and use the available mass to upgrade the mech's armor.  One Clint was modified with 6.5 tons of Hellespont Lite Ferro-Fibrous Armor.  It was determined that the mech could take significantly more damage, allowing to survive longer on the battlefield.  Based on these results, the upgrade kit for the Clint was modified, instead of replacing the medium lasers, it included new armor modules that would replace the old armor.  While a bit more involved (although most of the armor had to removed anyway to make the necessary upgrades to the cooling system) it was decided the extra effort was well worth it.  All remaining Capellan CLNT-2-3Ts are being upgraded to the -3Z configuration and those that have already been modified to to the -3U will be receiving the armor upgrade in the near future.

Wow, three from Irose. Well here is my version dreamed up last night. Enjoy!

CLNT-3-GT CLINT

Mass: 40 tons
Chassis: Andoran Model III
Power Plant: Hermes 240 XL
Cruising Speed: 64 kph
Maximum Speed: 97 kph
Jump Jets: Andoran Model JJII
Jump Capacity: 180 meters

Armament:
1 Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifle
1 Martell Medium Laser
Manufacturer: Andoran Industries Limited
Primary Factory: Bell
Communication System: Raldon R1
Targeting & Tracking System: Sloane 220 Lockover System

Overview:
For those Clint Mechwarriors unsatisfied with their firepower some errants, gladiators, and mercenaries have begun to customize their venerable war machine with the most powerful ballistic weapon known to man. Using pieces of other lostech refits they have been able to craft this dangerous upgrade package which is becoming standardized around the InnerSphere.

Capabilities:
The goal of the entire project from the start was to replace the Armstrong Autocannon/5 with a Gauss Rifle. Utilizing the Poland Main Model A would deliver at least three times as much damage to opponents as the older AC/5 which was also shorter ranged. Designers swapped the old Pitban 240 Fusion Engine for the lighter Hermes 240 XL from the RFL-5M Rifleman in order to get the mass necessary for such an operation. This was largely responsible for the almost three million C-bill increase in this Clint’s price tag from the original model. Some disliked the fragility of the bulkier light weigh power planet which undercut its durability not to mention the limited amount of ammo and armor it featured. Replacing the four and half tons of Durallex Medium with four tons of Durallex Super Medium Ferro-Fibrous from the HCT-5S Hatchetman did address this issue somewhat. However, because of the massive size of the Gauss Rifle a half ton of armor had to be removed offering the identical amount of protection of its forebearer. A Martell Medium Laser mounted in the left torso also had to be removed in order to make room for the massive ballistic canon. Despite these drawbacks the dramatic increase in offensive firepower was considered worth it by some Clint Mechwarrior who want to make someone’s day.

Majority of fluff is done, might alter some later but the intent is there.

Tak, I'd drop it down to 5/8/5 and make in Capellan would make a good companion design for Liao Hunchbacks. Could get an additional ton of ammo out for it and more armor.

An interesting idea Bradshaw. Standard 200 Fusion Engine weighs in at 8.5 tons correct? Loss a ton for the gyro (could have a story behind that, perhaps previously scrapped Clints from a junkyard, the gyro was frequently taken), and minus half a ton for jump jet. Would need another ton to make that work but I like the cost drop and the durability increase. EndoSteel chassis would make it work but I'd have to say a FedCom version is more likely given they control Bell and apparently Defiance Industries of Furillo is soon to produce new models in 3055 (per canon).

CLNT-2-4U is a bit of mystery that has been seen on the edges of Lyran space (Even the exact designation of the mech is unclear, we have assigned it the CLNT-2-4U based on it's possible lineage.).  The design has been seen operating with the New Belt Pirates under the command of Susie Morgraine-Ryan.  The source of the mechs is uncertain but long standing rumors have claimed that Redjack Ryan had several Clints in his forces.  There is little hard data on these mechs, most of the data has been extrapolated from several holovid recordings.  The mechs have clearly been heavily modified, it is not know where or when these modifications were made.

Based on readings of the mech's engine output, the CLNT-2-4U mounts a 200 rated engine, reducing it's speed.  It does retain it's jump jets, allowing it to maintain good mobility on the battlefield.  The weight saved by using the smaller engine, was used to upgrade the weapons array.  The Armstrong Autocannon was removed and replaced with a pair of SarLon Class 2 Autocannons.  This is similar to the rarely seen CLNT-2-4T (Hence assigning it the CLNT-2-4U designation).  While it seems that this may be a downgrade in fire power, the mech has proven very effective in the Pirate's hands.  Many of the planets that the pirates raid are poorly defended, mechs are very rare and most defense units are built around armored vehicles.  These vehicles are very vulnerable to the SarLon canons which, combined with the extreme accuracy of the Sloane 220 Lockover system, can hit them from long range cripple their mobility.  Once the vehicles are crippled the pirates can simply bypass them, hit the target and escape with minimal damage.  The single ton of ammunition provides more the adequate endurance for any mission.

The only other modification to the mechs is a slightly heavier armor configuration.  Additional armor plating has been added to the torso and legs.  While crudely applied, it does provide marginal additional protection.

It was a field refit and only the Davion and Liao seemed to have looted enough Clints to try to make something out of it.

The Clint was originally designed as a recon unit for the SLDF. Over the centuries it was deployed in a variety of roles, from recon to cavalry operations.  The Duchy of Andurien has captured several of these mechs for the Capellans over the course of the Succession Wars and has typically deployed them in the recon role. Following the Andurien Succession, these mechs were assigned to the Free World Legionaires.  While the Legionaires are loyal to the Captain General, they have maintained ties with the Duchy of Andurien.  Over time, a large number of troops from the Duchy have joined the Legionaires. Despite stringent loyalty tests, many of these new recruits secretly favor the Duchy over the federal government.

With the recovery of SLDF technology, the Legionaires sought to improve their recon forces.  While some members of the Legionaires pushed for a new variant of the Hermes II, many saw the Hermes as not only a flawed mech, but a symbol of the FWL's federal government.  These officers instead suggested developing a new version of the Clint.  Thus the CLNT-2-3A was born.

Unable to incorporate massive modifications such as using an Endosteel Chassis or XL Fusion Engine, they instead chose to focus on the weapons, armor and electronics. The old Armstrong Autocannon was removed and replaced with a Hellian-A ER Large Laser.  While some consideration was given to using an ER PPC, similar to the Capellan upgrade, the shortage of those weapons in the FWL made that impossible.  Even so the ER Large Laser provides a solid punch while removing the ammo dependance of the Autocannon.  The secondary weaponry remains unchanged.

The other major change to the Clint is the mech's electronic systems.  The Sloane 220 Lockover is upgraded with a Beagle Active Probe.  Somewhat surprisingly, given the normal difficulties the Clint faces with maintenance, the Sloane 220 is a highly modular system and easily accepted the Beagle Active Probe.  The Raldon R1 system proved less adaptable, ultimately the engineering team decided it was easier to just replace with the Datacom 50 with Guardian ECM Suite that is produced by Garret SatComm on Dalton.  The new electronics turn the Clint into a superior scout mech.

Other changes include an upgrade to the mech's heat dissipation system, allowing mech to handle the higher heat of the Extended Range laser, and improved armor.  The CLNT-2-3A carries 5.5 tons of Jolassa 328 Ferro-Fibrous armor.  This greatly improves the protection of the Clint.

The new Clint has proven popular with mechwarriors and there has been some discussion about trying to put it back into production.

CLNT-3-3T Clint

Overview:
The Taurian Defense Force has a number of old Clints in its inventory. Seeking a means to make these ancient 'Mechs more combat effective, the Protector authorized Taurus Militaryl Industries to use recovered technology to overhaul and upgrade this BattleMech.

Capabilities:
TMI carefully considered the problems with the Clint and finally decided upon a rather radical solution. Having a number of 200 Nissan power plants available from Davion and Liao Centurions destroyed (or captured) over the centuries, the design team removed the Pitban 240 from the Clint and installed these lighter engines in their place. While this reduced the maximum speed from 97.2 kph to 84.6 kph--and maximum jump capability from 180 meters to only 150 meters--it did free up a large amount of tonnage which TTI could then use to increase armor and armament. The substitution of the lighter power plant also called for a reduction in the size of the gyroscope, freeing up yet another ton of mass.

Wanting to keep the simple weapons arrangement of the Clint intact, TMI replaced the standard weapons with Taurian made equivilants. The troublesome AC was replaced by a Hyades Weapons Consortium Retaliation Ultra AC-5, and the cumbersome magazine feed through the shoulder was removed completely. Instead, the CLNT-3-3T houses the autocannon ammunition in the right arm, reducing the length and complexity of the feed systems and eliminating the threat of ammunition feed jamming (although jamming from using the Ultra double-tap mode still remains).  Because of the high rate of fire of the HWC Retaliation, a second ton of ammunition was added to boost combat endurance. Both medium lasers were replaced with Martin Gordon Rapiers, and reposistioned in the center and left torsos. To aid in preserving the life of the MechWarrior assigned to the CLNT-3-3T, CASE was installed in the right torso, which substantially improves the odds of the MechWarrior (and BattleMech) surviving combat.

Having two tons remaining, TMI removed the original armor package from the Clint and instead installed the Renault Composites 116-FF Ferro-Fibrous armor package--increasing armor protection from 4.5 to 6.5 tons. Although still light for a medium-class BattleMech, this improvement in armor protection was a welcome addition to the Clint.

Deployment:
Debuting in 3053, the new CLNT-3-3T Clint was accepted by the TDF with only a few misgivings and virtually all TDF Clints have been upgraded. The rarity of this BattleMech in TDF service--and the inability of Taurian industries to produce additional units--makes it unlikely that additional Clints will be converted for the TDF, but TMI makes the conversion available for approved domestic (and foreign) clients.  Currently several mercenary commands are in negotiations with TMI for a similar conversion of their own Clints.  Other clients include at least two dozen Nobles looking to upgrade their own 'Mech forces to current TDF standards, as well as the Magistracy of Canopus and the Outworlds Alliance.  Rumor suggests that Captain-General Marik is interested in the design as well and may well begin talks with Protector Calderon to obtain the design for his own Free Worlds League.

I realize that my CLNT-3-3T is very similar to the CLNT-2-5T designed and posted by Irose on the previous page.  But there are subtle differences.  While the conversion to ER Large Lasers, Blazers, and (in this case) PPCs may well be more efficient, the Clint (in my own humble opinion) needs to have an autocannon.  Or a Gauss Rifle!  It also eliminates the need for double-strength heat sinks . . . which are still quite rare in the Concordat at this early date.  Although my design can overheat (+3 on a jumping Alpha Strike with a double-tap from the UAC-5), the amount is marginal.

Anyway, that is my take on an upgraded Taurian Clint.  Hope ya'll enjoy her!

The Federated Commonwealth took a different approach to upgrading the venerable Clint.  Having no lack of resources, plans were developed to restart production at Hesperus II in the Lyran Commonwealth (Defiance Industries) and Quentin in the Federated Suns (Independence Weaponry).  Although actual production was still years away, when the Draconis Combine successfully took Quentin, they gained the design schematics as well as preliminary development data for restarting production.  Never one to take any such gift lightly, Theodore Kurita ordered the CLNT-4-1FC intended for the Federated Commonwealth to enter service with the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery as well.

Capabilities:
The new CLNT-4-1FC utilized many of the advanced recovered technologies that had been unlocked from the Helm Memory Core.  While the speed of these new Clints remained the same, the old Pitban 240 fusion engine with replaced with newly produced Pitban Extra Light 240 fusion engine, saving some six tons of overall mass.

New internal skeletal components were crafted from Endo-Steel (saving two more tons), while 7.0 tons of Durallex Super Medium Ferro-Fibrous armor plating was installed (three tons more than the that carried by the common CLNT-2-3T).

Both Martell Medium Lasers (left arm) were retained, but the troublesome Armstrong J11 Class 5 Autocannon was removed and replaced with a Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifle!  Ammunition storage was doubled in size (to two tons) and moved to the right arm alongside the Gauss Rifle to eliminate the old problems with the ammunition feed linkages.

Both the Raidon R1 communications array and the Sloane 220 Lockover tracking and targeting system were retained from the original Clint.

However, weight and internal space restraints forced the Federated Commonwealth design team to remove the six Andoran Model JJII jump-jets.

Although unable to jump, this new Clint remained fast enough to serve as a heavy Scout leader . . . and with the Gauss Rifle as a primary weapon it proved quite able to support the lighter scouts under its command.  The LCAF in particular was pleased at how well the design complemented their own Commando in the field.

The loss of Quentin to the Draconis Combine delayed the introduction of this BattleMech into the AFFS by several years, but the DCMS quickly rushed their newest Clints into deployment with veteran and elite Combine regiments already fielding fast light and medium units (the Arkab Legions, the Properina Hussars, the Nightstalkers, the Genyosha, and the Sword of Light among them).

Deployment:
In the LCAF, the new Clint is often assigned three Commandos (or two Commandos and a Hermes II in some regiments, primarily on the FWL border) to form a Recon Support Lance.   It is occasionally assigned to a heavy weight lance instead to provide to provide a "spotter" that is quite well armed.

The AFFS, on the other hand, still lags behind the LCAF in deployment due to the loss of the Independence Weaponry plant on Quentin.  The few CLNT-4-1FCs available have all been assigned to the Kathil Uhlans, the 1st Federated Suns Armored Cavalry, and the Davion Light Guards.  As more (slowly) become available, the First Prince plans to incorporate them into more line regiments and RCTs.

The DCMS also uses the Clint as a scout leader, often teamed up with Kurita variants of the Phoenix Hawk providing long-range fire support for the actual light-weight scouts.  It also sees extensive service in combination with the Dragon (especially the Grand Dragon with whom it shares the same ground speed) in fast strike lances.

Just getting into MML, did this as a practice piece.  Also, does MML do Primitives?  Anyway.

Overview

Pinard Protectorates Limited, as part of a general upgrade to the products produced by the company, has recently introduced a modern take on a old classic.  Taking action to finally fix the continuing difficulties with maintenance, PPL secured the rights to the Commonwealth's -5U design.  Unable to manufacture several components of the new design, PPL has come under fire by its critics in the TDF who have noted their new design is reliant on imports from the sharp merchants of Defiance Industries, who make a tidy profit selling components.

Capabilities

With the high costs of producing a modern design rather than continue to supply Militia-quality equipment, designers have modified the design to carry several more economical weapon systems in an effort to keep the -5U-T attractive to the TDF.  Upgrading further to utilize a 240 XL rather than Light engine, designers have seized on the idea of using cast-off Blazers to allow the -5U-T to use its expensive Freezers to provide a deadly knockout blow.  Adding two of the more common standard Medium lasers as back-up weapons, part of the weight savings from the bulky XL engine was used to add a SRM-6 with a single ton of ammo, making Wolverine -6R pilots look on in amazement.

Aggressive pilots have noted the Clint has the ability to deliver repeated Alpha strikes before its heat becomes dangerous, making it a dangerous, high-intensity brawler.

Deployment

The Clint-5U-T is still undergoing testing, but the prospect of a Medium frame - even a Clint - with the potential weight-saving technologies that allow a payload of nearly 50% of the design's total weight is extremely attractive to the TDF, who are interested in discovering what further radical changes to the design might be effective.

Ironically, Defiance has floated the idea of purchasing the rights to the -5U-T to provide the design to the LCAF, offering long-term discounts on components in exchange to make the design more attractive to the TDF.

Clint CLNT-2-3S

Mass: 40 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Experimental Tech
Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 3,755,080 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,060

Chassis: Andoran Model IV Standard
Power Plant: Pitban 240 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 64.8 km/h
Maximum Speed: 97.2 km/h
Jump Jets: Rawlings 52
    Jump Capacity: 180 meters
Armor: Durallex Medium Standard Armor
Armament:
    1  Binary Laser Cannon
    2 Defiance B3M Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: Defiance Industries
    Primary Factory: Furillo
Communications System: Angst Discom
Targeting and Tracking System: Angst Accuracy

Overview:
With the switch in production to the RFL-5D and the refit of many of their existing Rifleman 'Mechs to this specification, the Federated Commonwealth armed forces suddenly had a surplus of Pitban 240 reactors. Looking to repurpose this, they commissioned Defiance Industries to build new Clint chassis that could be paired with these surplus reactors and provide a new secondline medium 'Mech, replacing those being sent to face the Clans.

Capabilities:
Defiance Industries slightly modified the chassis of the Clint to use standard parts in place of some of the custom components that had made the design such a nightmare for technicians over the centuries, but were able to source enough Durallex Medium armour to duplicate the original arrangement.

The original jumpjets were impractical to replace in a reasonable timefrome so an arrangement of Rawlings 52 jumpjets replace the JJII units originally used. Standard for use on the ubitquious Wasp, Rawlings are easy to come by and maintain.

The electronics are somewhat harder to work with, since Defiance engineers adopted a suite that is still under development for a heavy 'Mech project years away from completion. If that design is ever rolled out, it may help availability but for now the cockpit is where technicians deem the 'curse of the Clint' to have returned.

For the mechwarriors who pilot them, the main difference is the replacement of the autocannon. Defiance have used the new Clint as a testbed for the D16X Binary Laser Cannon, an enormously powerful weapon that costs the 'Mech some of its range. Even with the installation of double heatsinks (the 2S version lacked these, which was... detrimental to effective operations) leaves the 3S running fairly warm.

Deployment:
The CLNT-2-3S is primarily found in the Tamarind March Militia at this time, although Defiance have also offered it to mercenary units facing the Clans. So far there has been a small order from the Kell Hounds, which may increase the design's prominence if the legendary mercenaries make a splash with their use of the 'Mech alongside their Wolfhounds.

I'm sure I missed something, but its late, and the wife is giving me a passionate nudge.  I'm sure you'll tell me if I missed something.  Hope the Blazer is available for the contest, I forgot to confirm that.

The Blazer is certainly available for this contest but the MRM and ER Mediums are NOT. To qualify for this 3053 era design you'll have to replace them for the moment with something else. Perhaps a LRM and standard Mediums. Good to see you back at it!

Well I fell asleep yesterday when I got home and thus did not post my Clints. Since then three of my four designs have been replicated by others in very close detail. This will involve a re-think on my part as I will need something to set them apart spec-wise as I will not be able to compete fluff-wise.

Fixed the ER-ML issue and changed some text.  Damn kids.  People are right, the user interface on MML is kind of basic.

*edit - Ugh.  Didn't READ that.  Damn Kids.  AND it just snowed 2-3".  I hate quarantine.  Substitute a SRM-6 for that.  Hmm.  Kind of reminds me of a lighter Wolverine.

In 3049, Oskar Boehringer, the Seniro VP for Research and Development for StarCorps Industries, sent out the design specifications for a new Clint chassis to all eight StarCorps facilities throughout the Inner Sphere. His instruction for the design teams at each location to design a new variant, based on regional needs and supplies, of this 'Mech. In the end only two facilities, Son Hoa and Fletcher, did not submit proposal back to StarCorps headquarters

Loburg

The factory in the Lyran half of the Federated Commonwealth submitted a design built around the new LB 10-X autocannon and a new 240XL engine. This Mech is designed to exploit Mechs that are already damaged using the cluster ammunition. Two pulse lasers and a medium laser supply the backup fire power while an extra ton of armor has been added.

The main Capellan facility's submission replaces the old autocannon with Artemis IV-equipped LRM15 launcher with three tons of ammunition. This is all
made possible by using a 240XL engine and the new endo-steel chassis. The special weapon is the Guardian ECM that helps cut the risk of counter battery fire.
Armor protection is greatly increased by the addition of 2.5 tons of extra armor. A medium pulse laser and a standard medium laser provide the close-in
support.

Title: Re: Optimizing the Clint
Post by: Abele on March 31, 2020, 01:34:51 PM
This Canopian model is a dedicated brawler and replaces the original Clint's weapon with an array of medium lasers, both standard and pulse. Armor protection has increased by nearly 75% while the Pitban 240 has been redesigned to be equipped with double heat sink due to the assistance of Capellan engineers. Each arm is fitted with a standard and pulser medium lasers, while another medium laser is mounted in the center torso. A machine gun is mounted in a rear firing position in the center torso. All onboard electronics has been replaced by locally produced gear. When local suppliers could not be used, Capellan sources have been used.

Overview:
The old axiom that one man's trash is another man's treasure defines the development of the CLNT-1-2D Clint. The depravations of the Succession Wars took their toll on many BattleMechs but none more so then the Clint which used non-standard parts. The manufacturer Andoran Industries, Limited utilized these components in order to profit from their original bid to undercut competitors. These shoddy parts which seldom lasted a year needed replacement which was highly profitable during the Star League era but quickly became a technicians’ worst nightmare once the unity of the InnerSphere fell apart. The destruction of Andoran facilities in 2812 effectively made the search for spare parts into an impossible quest. Prices, particularly for a Clint’s gyroscope, skyrocketed and many were simply stripped for parts to repair other damaged machines. Over one hundred of these chassis were in FedCom scrapyards until the Clan Invasion forced the AFFC to redeploy garrisons from the Draconis March. Desperate to replenish its BattleMech forces to acceptable levels several projects were begun including this one which would recycle scrapped Clints for service once more.

Capabilities:
Plucking Clints from boneyards in the Federated Commonwealth and beyond many Andoran Model III chassis were shipped to Robinson Standard BattleWorks for complete refurbishment. Stripped down to its internal structure and musculature techs found that the core of the Clint was still good as were its electronic systems and jump jets. While these lifters had to be repositioned to the legs and center torso, they remained quite operational. Even the original Martell Medium Laser mounted in the center torso was simply reconditioned as part of the process. The Nissan 200 Fusion Engine and two-ton gyroscope newly manufactured on Robinson for other rumored designs in pre-production eliminated maintenance concerns while freeing up mass for armor and weaponry.  Six tons of StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous previously used on the Enforcer refit and a ChisComp 43 Special Large Laser which replaced the old Medium Laser in the left torso were imported from New Avalon. These products made at Archernar BattleMechs along with Double Heat Sinks allowed this Clint to operate almost hassle free. Lastly a Parti-Kill Heavy Cannon made by New Earth Trading Company and previously featured on the Manticore replaced the old Armstrong J11 Autocannon/5. This PPC was a drastic offensive improvement over that ballistic weapon even though it generated far more heat.

Deployment:
The CLNT-1-2D has been issued to recalled veterans, formerly dispossessed, and new recruits throughout the Draconis March by an anxious Duke Sandoval. Quickly earning praise from Mechwarriors and Technicians as the ‘Little Enforcer’ it rarely requires maintenance like its forebearer. Its all energy arsenal also means it can stay in the field for a long time without returning for resupply.

The 2nd St. Ives Lancers was always the workhorse of the St. Ives Armoured Cavalry, eager and willing to do their duty whatever the odds.
Part of this performance came from the dedication, part of their training and part of their willingness to explore new avenues to improve their efficiency, like the acceptance and then generalisation of the VND-1R St. Ives Blue turning it into the VND-1SIC, the standard Vindicator used by the Saint Ives Military Command.

Eager to make her familial Clint outperform anyone, SubCommander Xiulan Pound had first decided to retrofit her CLNT-2-3T to a CLNT-2-3U giving it more firepower and making it less supply dependant. However, she soon found herself complaining about the lack of range of its secondary weapons and lack of increased protection to deal with the new threats on the battlefield.

This is why together with a team of techs of the 2nd St. Ives Lancers, she upgraded the 3U making her own Little Dancer (the name of her ‘Mech) version of it. Her first move was to drop the twin Medium Pulse Lasers for a trio of Medium Lasers, increasing both the firepower and the range of the secondary weapons. With the free ton left, they decided to upgrade the armour bringing it to 5.5 tons and turning it into a ferro-fibrous one, improving the overall protection by around a third.

Willing to play a trick with Little Dancer against the Capellan Confederation, she ordered that all the weapons and equipments should come from typical Capellan ‘Mechs like the Raven or the Vindicator. Luckily for her, the 2nd St. Ives Lancers was in the process of being upgraded, meaning that a lot of “outdated” or damaged equipments were available for her to make as she saw fit.

So far, the CLNT-2-3U Little Dancer has only seen action against the SIAMS Training Group where her recon Lance (made only of ‘Mechs with energy weapons) has been performing deep strike raids on a regular basis while proving difficult to catch thanks to their combo of firepower (with the Clint being the main reason behind the firepower of this Lance) and speed.

Hmm.  Reminds me of a slightly heavier Wolfhound, plus Jump.  Good rationalization of new parts/loadout, too.  Well done!  This one gets my vote.

Hey Red Pins, you just reminded me that while browsing yesterday I noticed that your otherwise excellent Clint CLNT-5U-T still features MRMs which is too advanced for this setting. It is currently 3053 or 3054 at latest which is far too early for the Taurian Concordat to be fielding them. Thanks again, sorry to be such a nag.

Well the Clint sure sparked a lot of interest this time around generating twenty-three separate proposals by eight different designers (4 Bradshaw, 5 Irose, 2 Takiro, 2 masterarminas, 1 Red Pins, 1 drakensis, 7 Abele, 1 Ice Hellion). While some design choices were debatable, the high quality of all was not in doubt as every single one made the cut making my job especially though.

CONTENDERS

23. CLNT-3-GT (Takiro)
This rather high end refit of existing Clints is possible but expensive thanks in large part to the 240 XL Engine (6/9/6). Supply of this lostech power plant isn't the problem just its cost and the extensive refit needed to make it work. Stripping off the old standard armor is necessary as its replacement with four tons of ferro-fibrous (72 factor) is called for. I've become a big fan of max armor especially if an XL Engine is present and because of the Gauss Rifle that is not possible here. Love the punch provided by the Gauss Rifle but it only has eight shots and a single Medium Laser in support. The design does retain its standard chassis and ten Single Heat Sinks to rein in its luxury tech items but it is still costly. Therefore any examples are likely rare to unique which limits its  impact here and of course I am hardest on myself.

22. CLNT-1-2D (Takiro)
I really love this recycled Draconis March precursor of the Watchman which utilized salvaged Clint standard chassis and level one weaponry like PPC, Large Laser, Medium Laser to create a solid fighter. This is accomplished by reducing the power plant to a 200 Engine (5/8/5) which also allows the gyroscope to be reduced from three to two tons. The extent of lostech used to enable its operations are eleven Double Heat Sinks and six tons of ferro-fibrous (108 factor). Well protected and durable this was my favorite entry but failed to reckon with another submission which was very similar in armament. Being hardest on my self this design fell out of the winner circle all the way to here some fourteen spots. Ouch but that is the level of competition here.

21. CLNT-5U-T (Red Pins)
While the fluff doesn't make sense, true, it is a very good design that I'd like to work on. In 3053 it is a bit too advanced for Taurians at this time with an EndoSteel chassis and a 240 XL Engine (6/9) highlighting that excess. No objection to the 12 (24) Double Heat Sinks or Ferro-Fibrous as I think the Periphery States may be able to pull that off at this time. Not sure about the Blazer either as it is just getting popular in the 3rd Marik Civil War and the Concordat might not even have access. The rest from the SRM-6 (15), two Medium Lasers, and 8.5 tons of standard armor (136 factor) makes for a very solid design. I'd love to get this going as a DCMS variant of the Clint which Ican really see working at this time. So great design but just needs a new back story really.

20. CLNT-3-4MC (Abele)
The Canopian model developed with the help of Capellan engineers suffers from its lack of a big gun. To a large degree I felt like this contest was a 'let's arm the Clint with this weapon' but this entry went with a bunch of small ones. Three Medium Lasers and two Medium Pulses was an interesting mix but I didn't understand keeping the Machine Gun (100)? Certainly, this many small energy weapon approach called for a Small Pulse Laser instead, no? Got no problem with the ten Double Heat Sinks or the 7.5 tons of ferro-fibrous (134 factor) as other lostech additions. As I said Periphery States at this time can utilize such 'simple' or available lostech. The rest is fairly simplistic from the Standard chassis to the 240 Engine (6/9/6) but in the end I just didn't care for the no big gun approach mixed with a machine gun.

19. CLNT-4-2 (Abele)
The second no big gun entry was this long-range missile carrier which featured an LRM-15 with Artemis IV FCS (18). This Capellan Confederation probably should have been a little lower tech too given House Liao poor economic condition. I find it unlikely that even StarCorps of Menke with the help of Big Mac could pull off such a high-tech design with EndoSteel and a 240 XL Engine (6/9/6). Ten Double Heat Sinks sure and even the Medium Pulse Laser plus the Guardian ECM Suite I find very acceptable. Seven tons of standard armor (112 factor) with CASE makes for some solid defenses but I just think this one is too much for the Capellans at this time plus there were other designs that were better IMO.

18. CLNT-3-1A (Bradshaw)
This ComGuard Clanbuster from Skobel (which you misspelled) was too slow for my tastes especially when facing the Invaders. Usually downrating the engine allows you to get tougher especially in the InnerSphere but here you got slower and kept the vulnerability of a 200 XL (5/8/5). Together with EndoSteel and ten Double Heat Sinks (to a lesser extent) this is an expensive project. Yes, eight tons of standard armor (128 factor) provides for excellent protection and the LB 10-X AC (20) together with four Medium Lasers makes for a nice Elemental killer. Less expensive then the Komodo I suppose but not good enough to best your other ComGuard or LB 10-X competition in this contest. Sorry bud!

17. CLNT-4-4 (Abele)
While I could certainly see the Free Worlds League being interested in a Blazer armed ‘Mech I don’t think it would be the Clint. It has certain Capellan overtones that would effectively dissuade investment in this EndoSteel built and 240 XL (6/9/6) powered high-tech new build at Emris IV. Also not sure I loved the two Medium Lasers and why not a Small Pulse instead of the Machine Gun? I know the heat generated is high but you have to add a CASE for protection plus going all energy eliminates the need for resupply. Eleven Double Heat Sinks do a nice job keeping the design cool as 7.5 tons of standard armor (120 factor) grants solid protection to the ‘Mech. Ultimately I liked another Clint from the Free Worlds League better.

16. CLNT-4-3 (Abele)
I could see the Federated Suns experimenting with a new build EndoSteel Clint chassis as well as a 240 XL Engine (6/9/6) at an NAIS campus somewhere. Combined with a Triple Strength Myomer (7/11) that would be an interesting experiment for sure but beyond that? Two ER Larges are the direct opposite of two Medium Pulses which make up this testbed put together by StarCorps on Crofton. A dozen Double Heat Sinks sort of puzzle me though cause don’t you want to go over heat to activate the Myomer. Seven tons of standard armor (112 factor) does provide excellent protection without a doubt to this fast-moving cutting-edge Clint. Unfortunately, you just got beat out by other Davion Clints.

NEAR MISSES

15. CLNT-4-1 (Abele)
I liked this high end Lyran new build of the Clint from StarCorps Industries of Loburg which featured a LB 10-X Autocannon and two tons of ammo. While the EndoSteel chassis and 240 XL Engine (6/9/6) make for an expensive project House Steiner is good for it. While the ten Double Heat Sinks are somewhat of an extravagance given that only Alpha Strike movement will overheat you, again I can deal with it. Two Medium Lasers and Small Pulse Laser make for a nice complement. Five and a half tons of standard armor (88 factor) provides for descent protection which is perhaps my only slight disappointment with this one. Unfortunately, you were defeated by other better challengers who either featured the LB 10-X or a Steiner backstory. Rough luck pal.

14. CLNT-2-3M (Bradshaw)
This Davion urban fighter out of the Bell Refit Yards was solid featuring the old reliable standard chassis. Downgrading to a 200 Fusion Engine (5/8/5) allowed plenty of other goodies to hop aboard as well as improve durability and cut cost. Eleven Double Heat Sinks worked well to cool weapon fire from the Large Pulse and three Medium Laser which makes up this ‘Mechs arsenal. Also like the surveillance gear which includes a Beagle Active Probe and Remote Sensor Dispenser to help hunt down any in city opposition. With seven tons of ferro-fibrous (134 factor) armor this Clint can really take a licking and keep on ticking. Very nice overall but you were beaten by some stiff competition.

13. CLNT-2-3S (drakensis)
A new AFFC build from Defiance Industries of Furillo which uses a Blazer and existing components was a solid entry from drakensis. Probably the best of the Blazer entries thanks to a solid design combined with solid fluff it nonetheless came up a little short. Don’t get me wrong I liked the use of the Standard Clint chassis as well as the good old 240 (6/9/6) Fusion Engine which along with the ten Double Heat Sinks allowed for good heat dissipation of this ‘Mechs all energy armament. The Blazer (simply replacing the old AC/5) being supported by two Medium Lasers can overheat you if combined with a Jump but pilots should know better. You could have sexed this one up a little bit more with ferro-fibrous as 4.5 tons of standard armor (72 factor) can be improved on. Very nice but you got out dueled by another Lyran entry.

12. CLNT-3-3T (masterarminas)
Quite the solid Taurian refit of the Clint was also produced by masterarminas who like some of us downgraded his power plant to a 200 (5/8/5) Fusion Engine saving valuable tonnage on the same old chassis. Ten Single Heat Sinks did a fine job dissipating heat from movement and the Ultra Autocannon/5 (40) along with the two Medium Lasers. Alternating jumping and running should easily be enough to mitigate any hot runs a Mechwarrior could go on. Six and half tons of ferro-fibrous (116 factor) along with a CASE provide fine protection for this Concordat Clint. Alas there can be only one and another bullheaded challenger managed to get on bye ya.

11. CLNT-4-6 (Abele)
The finest ComGuard Clint presented here was this cutting-edge design newly manufactured on Earth. Using EndoSteel and the larger 320 XL (8/12/6) Engine this thing could really move to counter fast Clan OmniMechs. The ER PPC gave it solid range and a punch which was further backed by two Mediums Lasers. While ten Double Heat Sinks struggle to keep up with its high heat weaponry and movement factor it is a pretty solid challenger for the Invaders which would add nicely to a rebuilding ComGaurds after Tukayyid. Plus, seven and a half tons of standard armor (120 factor) granted it a measure of protection which gives this sniper a good chance in combat. I liked but unfortunately it reminded a little too much of another ER PPC carrying Clint which beat you out Abele. Not bad at all though.

10. CLNT-1-DW (Bradshaw)
Perhaps the best hook of the entire contest was Defiance Industries expansion into the Federated Suns to where else but the planet of Defiance! Not only good on a purely corporate branding strategy but the world does seem ripe for industrialization and development. The EndoSteel structure above anything else did give me a little bit of a pause however as the establishment of EndoSteel orbital facilities might be a high bar to begin with. The 280 XL (7/11/6) Engine could be imported as could the dozen Double Heat Sinks and the seven tons of ferro-fibrous (125 factor). The new ER PPC and the old Large Laser make for interesting pairing which I could actually get behind. Like the other near misses though you were beaten by other craftier designs at least IMO. Keep the background story though, I liked it very much!

9. CLNT-2-3U (Ice Hellion)
The Little Dancer from the St Ives Compact was so very close to making the grade here but in the end lost on a design basis to another Liao-Allard entry. Your story was excellent and the design which utilized the standard chassis along with the old reliable 240 (6/9/6) Fusion Engine top notch. Ten Double Heat Sinks work well as does the five and half tons of ferro-fibrous (98 factor) armor. The ER PPC along with three Medium Lasers resembled another winning entry however which I did my best to differentiate the entries by. This narrowly left you out of the winning circle this time around, sorry bud. Very close.

8. CLNT-2-2U (Bradshaw)
Even closer was this standard refit of existing models often used by mercenaries which I went back and forth on a few times. Pretty simply replacing the old Autocannon/5 with a new ER Large Laser and eleven Double Heat Sinks made for a pretty solid approach. Backed by three Medium Lasers this upgrade of the standard chassis and original 240 (6/9/6) Fusion Engine has got a solid punch. Six and half tons of regular old armor (104 factor) plating makes it pretty durable. Regrettably another entry which placed higher is just too similar - bouncing you oh so narrowly from the winner’s circle. Sorry, maybe next time!

WINNERS

7. CLNT-4-5 (Abele)
In a dog fight with Ice Hellion’s Little Dancer this new build from StarCorps Industries of St. Ives Compact narrowly won out. This EndoSteel structured ‘Mech powered by a 240 XL (6/9/6) Engine is geared towards urban combat with its highly accurate Pulse Laser (Large, Medium, and Small) arsenal backed by a Streak SRM-2 (50). This thing is gonna hit ya and with its Beagle Active Probe you’re not gonna be able to sneak around it plus the Guardian ECM Suite means it can win on the electronic battlefield. I can see it hunting down Capellan infiltrators who could make trouble for the Compact in this time of strife. Ten Double Heat Sinks cool all but a Jumping Alpha Strike completely while seven and a half tons of standard armor (112 factor) with CASE provide solid protection. While Ice’s fluff was better this one was a better fit for me and just edged into the winner’s circle. Congrats Abele!

6. CLNT-2-4U (Irose)
A pop gun pirate refit armed with twin Autocannon/2s in the service of the New Belt Pirates is intriguing to say the least. While these two long range light hitters can’t finish someone off per say they are enough to harass opponents into distraction especially with two Medium Lasers backing them up. Using the standard Clint chassis along with a downgraded 200 (5/8/5) Fusion Engine this design is a real delight. Like the ten Single Heat Sinks and five tons of standard armor (80 factor) which isn’t advanced at all but capable. Love the bandit angle and it just fits nicely overall. Nicely done Irose, the first of many here!

5. CLNT-2-5T (Irose)
This Taurian refit which does an excellent job of using existing parts to enhance the Clint standard chassis. Things like the two-ton gyro from their new Hatchetman and the 200 (5/8/5) Fusion Engine from the Lightning Aerospace Fighter are superb matches here. While it uses lostech like 7.5 tons of ferro-fibrous (134 factor) with CASE, and ten Double Heat Sinks the design isn't that advanced. With a PPC, SRM-4 (25) rack, and two Medium Lasers it packs a wallop for the Concordat who could use this design to augment their forces. As Abele quite correctly pointed out Irose made a larger Panther out of the Clint which made for a winning concept to me. Win number two!!

4. CLNT-2-4D (Irose)
The domination continues with this NAIS testbed design that goes back to the Clint's bigger AC/10 roots with an LB 10-X upgrade. Using an LB 10-X AC (20) along with two Medium Lasers is an effective combination and only required a 240 XL (6/9/6) Engine to make it fit. The standard core chassis remains now protected by six tons of advanced ferro-fibrous (107 factor) armor which is certainly an improvement. Ten Single Heat Sinks seem adequate especially on Running Alpha Strikes and only Jumping Alphas really tax the system. Not only could this design work against BattleMechs more effectively but it could be useful versus Clan Elementals as well as conventional armor. Nicely done Irose for win number three!!! Question for you and Bradshaw- I was thinking that this could be the design which Defiance picks up for its Defiance expansion in the Federated Suns – what do you guys think? Could start with extensive refits at a growing facility and grow into something more…..

3. CLNT-2-3A (Irose)
This Andurien refit of salvaged Capellan Clints that they favor over Marik Hermes II was good enough for the bronze here. It really made a lot of sense given the standoffish relationship that this wanna be breakaway province. Refurbing captured Capellan chassis which uses the good olde 240 (6/9/6) Fusion Engine they add ten Double Heat Sinks and 5.5 tons of ferro-fibrous (98 factor) to an all energy armament. The ER Large and two Medium Lasers aren’t really about offense so much as they complement the high-tech electronics package. A Beagle Active Probe and a Guardian ECM Suite make this BattleMech an excellent medium scout just like the Hermes II should be. Great job Irose, win number four here!!!!

2. CLNT-4-1FC (masterarminas)
This FedCom new build is very Lyran which is why I like it so much, why cause its armed with a huge Gauss Rifle (16) and backed by two Medium Lasers. Intended as a heavy scout leader it could work well with the Commando and unlike many Clints presented here this one doesn't jump. EndoSteel and a 240 XL (6/9) Engine make way for the big gun as well as seven tons of ferro-fibrous (125 factor) armor. The Gauss and the lack of jump jets keep the heat profile so low it only requires ten Single Heat Sinks to keep it cool even while running and gunning. This one really grew on me and I could see the Lyrans loving this precursor to the big gun Hollander. Good enough for the silver medal masterarminas this time around, congrats! Please note I could see the DCMS capturing the design but I'd think traditionalist would shelve it until the Clan Invasion and Martial Accords could unleash a version of it. Hint, hint, Red Pins.

1. CLNT-2-3Z (Irose)
Perhaps my favorite upgrade of the existing TRO3050 variant which simply drops the Medium Pulses for the old standard Medium Lasers which have superior range. This Capellan model makes the most sense and was ultimately too hard to beat with its simplicity. The ER PPC makes for a hard-hitting long-range weapon which is cooled adequately by ten Double Heat Sinks. Yes you can get into trouble Alpha Striking especially in concert with a Jump or two but this can be effectively managed. The standard chassis and the old Pitban 240 (6/9/6) Engine are well protected thanks to six and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (116 factor) armor. This is another big improvement over the canon lostech model. Gold medal and a big congratulations to the winner of the Clint challenge, IROSE!!!!! Great job bud, you really ran this contest.

Congratulations Irose and MasterArminas (and the others too).

Logical with 23 entries for a design that generated so much interest but was never produced in great numbers

The interest level was great btw and we ended up with several possible new Clint factories as a result which is fitting. It seems like the Federated Commonwealth and the Taurian Concordat could overtake the Capellan Confederation one day as the primary users of the design.
