Optimizing the Dragon/Grand Dragon
« on: January 17, 2021, 10:10:10 PM »

Happy New Year everyone and onto optimization contest number thirty-two where things get Heavy. First up is the Dragon which was originally a failed Star League era proposal circa 2754 to replace the Shadow Hawk that was picked up by House Kurita becoming their Succession War era hallmark. So many of these Draconis BattleMechs were produced that they eventually ended up as salvage employed by the Federated Suns, Lyran Commonwealth, and numerous mercenary commands. Eventually the breakaway Free Rasalhague Republic became perhaps the second largest user of the Dragon following its declaration of independence in 3034. The latest evolution of this design has been the move to the more advanced Grand Dragon by the Draconis Combine in 3040.

There are many directions potential entries can take here from reactionary Black Dragons, to Rasalhagian rebranding, to mercenary lostech refits, or maybe even the most ideal Grand Dragon yet to be discovered. At home this Mech usually served as an adversary or at best third-party unit which I personally didn’t get that much use with but I am anxious to see what our designers can come up with here. To assist us in this effort we once again have a little help from the Mech of the Week Article and BattleTeckWiki (links below). Once again, the winner or winners will be enshrined in my setting as one of the Optimized TRO 3050 designs. I will refine a concept that I am working on myself for the Salient Horizon universe and I wish everyone good luck!

Design Criteria
Design: Dragon/Grand Dragon Heavy BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 60 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday January 29th 2021 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

I have always liked the Dragon, and as such, I have got seven ready to roll out (four ballistic, three energy based, including three C3 Master Units . . . one of which carries TWO C3 Masters just for those folks wanting to field a full company of Dragons and Grand Dragons.  Just waiting for time to write the fluff and post them.

DRG-2x Dragon

The iconic heavy-weight 'Mech of the Draconis Combine is the Dragon.  Although at the lower end of the heavy-weight category, the Dragon has served House Kurita well throughout the centuries.  Well protected, fast (for a Succession Wars era 'Mech), and decently armed, the Dragon is a solid performer on the battlefield.

With recovered technology from the Helm Data Core becoming available in the late 3030s and early 3040s, the DCMS began looking at ways to upgrade this staple.  One school of thought advocated using a newly developed 360-rate Extra-light Fusion engine to boost the ground speed even higher . . . although the projected cost would rise dramatically as well.  This version, based on the DRG-1G Grand Dragon was designed and developed . . . but the resulting fragility (and the high cost of acquisition) caused by the XL engine caused Theodore Kurita to order Luthien Armor Works to explore other options.

By 3049, eight new prototypes were in development and preparing to enter field testing trials.  Theodore had insisted that LAW concentrate on improving the ruggedness and firepower of the design, but keeping the standard fusion engine used by the DRG-1N and DRG-1G.  While speed would not be improved, these new Dragons and Grand Dragons were expected to be tough enough that they could survive on the battlefield . . . and the cost would be low enough that House Kurita could continue to manufacture them in large numbers.

The Clan Invasion would see the introduction of these seven new variants of the Dragon and Grand Dragon.  And while some MechWarriors would miss the increased speed of the original concept, their ability to network together using C3 slave modules and master control computers, their improved survivability, and increased firepower soon quieted the critics.

The basis for all seven variants would be the same.  Each would use a newly developed Alshain Type 560-60ES Endo-Steel II internal structure and would carry eleven full tons of New Samarkand Royal Ferro-Fibrous armor plating.  Each would feature a Vlar 300 standard fusion engine.

Two alternate production concepts were developed simultaneously.  Those designated the Dragon (DRG-2N, DRG-2Nc, DRG-2K, and DRG-2R) would utilize ballistic weapons as the main gun, similar to the DRG-1N Dragon.  Standard single-strength heat sinks would be fitted to these four 'Mechs as heat production would fall within the norms for the Inner Sphere at the time.

The DRG-2G, DRG-2H, DRG-2Gc, and DRG-2Gcc, on the other hand, would feature a Lord's Light 2 ER PPC (or the Lord's Thunder Binary Laser Cannon) as the main gun and would be designated as the Grand Dragon.  These three designs would draw upon the limited stockpile of double-strength heat sinks to deal with the increased heat production of the Extended Range PPC.

The base DRG-2N incorporates a C3 Slave Module in the head, along with CASE in both the right and left torsos.  The main gun is an Imperator Ultra-5 Ultra AC-5 Autocannon in the right arm, fed by two tons of ammunition in the right torso.  This is supported at range by two Thunderstroke-L LRM-5 launchers in the center torso, fed by two tons of ammunition stored in the left torso.  Two medium lasers (one left arm, one rear-mounted in the right torso) round out the weapons payload.  Cost for the DRG-2N was finalized at less than six million C-Bills.

The DRG-2K removes one Thunderstroke-L LRM-5 launcher and its ammunition bin in order to upgrade the Imperator Ultra-5 autocannon to an Imperator Code Red LB-10X Autocannon, also supplied with two tons of ammunition.  Not quite as long ranged as the DRG-2N, the -2K adds flexibility in being able to use both slug and cluster ammunition and has proven deadly against vehicles, VTOLs, both conventional and aerospace fighters.

The last Dragon variant is the DRG-2Nc.  Armament is based on the DRG-2N, but both Thunderstroke-L LRM launchers, their ammunition bins, and the left torso CASE have been removed to accomodate a 5-ton C3 Master Computer in the right torso.  The rear-firing Victory 23R Medium Laser has been moved to the left torso and a third Victory 23R added to the center torso to compensate for the loss of the LRMs.  Finally a ChisComp 32 Small Laser has been added to the left arm.  The DRG-2Nc retains the C3 Slave Module as well as having the C3 Master Computer; this allows the DRG-2Nc to network into a full company of C3 'Mechs rather than simply a lance.

DRG-2x Grand Dragon

The final four 'Mech variants of the Dragon are designated as the Grand Dragon.  All of these utilize double-strength heat sinks to accommodate the higher heat production of the energy based weapons array.

The DRG-2G is equipped with CASE in the left torso and a C3 Slave Module in th head.  Armament consists of a Lord's Light 2 Extended Range PPC in the right arm, supported by two Thunderstroke-L LRM-5 launchers in the center torso (fed by two tons of ammunition in the left torso).  In close, there are three Victory 23R Medium Lasers (one in the left arm and two in the right torso, one of which fires to the rear) and a ChisComp 32 Small Laser in the left arm.  Thirteen DHS provides ample cooling.

The DRG-2H is a limited production unit that uses the experiment Lord's Thunder Binary Laser Cannon rather than an ER PPC as the main gun.  To mount this weapon, the design team had to remove one of the Thunderstroke-L LRM launchers and ammunition bin, but added a fourth Victory 23R Medium Laser in the left torso to compensate.  Heat production is slightly higher, but the DRG-2H has proven itself to be a capable bodyguard 'Mech usually assigned to defend the company commander during battle.

Finally, there is the DRG-2Gcc Company Command BattleMech. The head mounted C3 Slave Module has been removed, but a second C3 Master Computer has been installed in the left torso, allowing the DRG-2Gcc to coordinate up to twelve 'Mechs on the battlefield.  Armament consists of a Lord's Light 2 ER PPC in the right arm, a Thunderstroke-L LRM-5 launcher in the center torso (fed by a ton of ammunition in the left torso), and a Victory 23R Medium Laser in the left arm.  Only ten DHS are installed, but this adequete for the reduced weapons loadout.  Unfortunately, the design engineers at LAW had to removed the left torso CASE system in order to accomodate the second C3 Master Computer.

Tacticaly, the DCMS has been fielding companies of Dragons and Grand Dragons, normally with one lance of Dragons and a second company command lance of Grand Dragons.  The third lance is usually an ad-hoc assembly of C3 equipped 'Mechs led by either a Dragon or Grand Dragon . . . but all 'Mechs within the company match or exceed the speed of the DRG-2x series.

These new company formations have performed well on the battlefield against the Clans, although the prevalence of ECM Suites amongst Clan OmniMechs has somewhat hindered their ability to coordinate fire.  However, when there is no hostile ECM, these new DCMS "Storm Dragon" Companies are absolutely devastating being able to engage the enemy at range and tough enough to take incoming fire . . . at least long enough to put a serious hurt on hostile forces.

Very nice masterarminas!

Here is my Dracon for the Rasalhague Kungsarme and the Varangian Guard. Hope you enjoy!

DRC-2N DRACON

Mass: 60 tons
Chassis: Advanced Alshain Type 56-60H EndoSteel
Power Plant: GM 300 XL
Cruising Speed: 54 kph
Maximum Speed: 86 kph
Jump Jets: None
   Jump Capacity: None
Armor: Maximillan Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
1 Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifle
1 Lord’s Light 2 Extended Range Particle Projector Cannon
2 Coventry Five-Tube LRM-5s
1 A5L Small Laser
Manufacturer: Odin Manufacturing
Primary Factory: Orestes
Communications System: Sipher CommSys 3
Targeting and Tracking System: Eagle Eyes SY10-10

Overview:
Rasalhague efforts to rebrand their ancient oppressor’s premier BattleMech dated back to the birth of the Free Republic itself in 3034. Many Kavellrists quickly dubbed it their Mech’s the Dracon which was officially codified by Republic officials. However, these DRC-1Ns were little if any different from their Draconis forebearers. Preliminary work for a lostech upgrade variant of the Dracon began on Rasalhague in the early 3040s partly in response to Kurita’s development of the so-called Grand Dragon. Work was slow however as the Republic had other priorities at the time than rolling out a high-tech heavy cavalry unit it could ill-afford. While the Clan Invasion altered that pre-war thinking the speed of Kerensky’s juggernaut further hampered development efforts and ultimately made full scale production impossible. Thanks to the assistance of the Federated Commonwealth a handful of DRC-2Ns made it into service just prior to the Truce of Tukayyid.

Capabilities:
The core of the DRC-2N is composed of Advanced Alshain Type 56-60H EndoSteel which was originally manufactured on New Oslo by GKT Enterprises. This light weight but bulky chassis was but the first of weight saving lostech utilized in this cutting-edge design. Eleven tons of Maximillan Ferro-Fibrous manufactured by Rasalhague Armor Works not only saved valuable tonnage but also increased armor protection to near maximum levels. Armor improvements were made to the center torso, side torso, and most significantly the arms and legs of the BattleMech. The left arm Victory 23R Medium Laser was replaced by a Lord’s Light 2 ER PPC previously used on the Panther. The other rear mounted Medium Laser and Telos DecaCluster LRM-10 were replaced with twin Coventry Five-Tube LRM-5s and the rear firing A5L Small Laser were all manufactured on Kirchbach for the Rommel and Patton Tanks. Most of the other systems like the Sipher CommSys 3 and Eagle Eyes SY10-10 electronics remain from the original Dragon design.
Other high-tech items necessary for the completion of this design had to be imported from the Federated Commonwealth. Thankfully these components were from a single upgrade package assembled by Bowie Industries on Carlisle for the MAD-5S Marauder. Both the GM 300 XL and the Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifle (shipped from distant New Syrtis) would be vital in the realization of this Rasalhagian concept. However, designers had to remove the right upper arm actuator in order to make room for the massive Gauss Rifle that replaced the Imperator-A Autocannon/5. Indeed, the inclusion of an Extra Light Engine, EndoSteel skeleton, and Ferro-Fibrous armor took up virtually all internal space. Techs have a difficult time work on the Dracon as a result of this cramped interior.

Deployment:
Rasalhague has been almost completely gutted of its industrial strength by the Invading Clans whose blitz through a majority of its worlds have left it without much manufacturing capability whatsoever. Originally a product of Rasalhague Armor Works assembly of any remaining Dracons has fallen to Odin Manufacturing on Orestes. One of the only component factories to survive the Clan assault it is struggling to slowly refit existing Dragons. Thankfully FedCom assistance has recently been joined by ComStar and the once hated Draconis Combine. Even with imported components it still maybe years, if ever, that Odin could commit to full scale production of the Dracon. Thus far every model has seen service with the Drakon Regiments of the Rasalhague Kungsarme. However, two Dracons have recently been seen in the Illyrian Palantine in the service of the Varangian Guards.

Re: Optimizing the Dragon/Grand Dragon

The DRG-2R was developed by the Free Rasalhague Republic in the wake of the devastating losses suffered by the KungsArme during the initial Clan invasion. Having suffered significant losses, the FRR was desperate for mechs to defend it's few remaining worlds. At the same time, the tiny nation found itself with only limited funds, forcing it to be very careful with its expenditures. While many other nations were re-equipping with modern advanced weapons, the FRR, despite aid from Comstar, simply could not afford large numbers of new mechs.  Forced to be more creative, the FRR acquired a large number of DRG-1N mechs from the Draconis Combine.  These older mechs had seen decades and in some cases, centuries of use and were badly worn.  Where the Combine saw mechs that were best suited for the scrapyard, the FRR saw the opportunity to re-equip its forces.

The DRG-1Ns were send to Odin Manufacturing, where they were stripped down and reconditioned to a like new state.  The mechs were then changed from a fast assault unit to a potent replacement for assault and heavy mechs.  The large Vlar 300 engine was removed and replaced with the lighter Edasich Motors 240 engine.  These were acquired cheaply as they had been produced for the Vulcan, which instead switched to a lower rated engine.  Using weight savings from the smaller engine, the design team dramatically increased the firepower of the Dragon.

Just like the Grand Dragon, the DRG-2R replaces the Imperator-A Autocannon with the harder hitting Lord's Light Particle Beam Weapon.  The older Lord's Light PPC came from a stockpile that was established after the Panther switched to the more advanced Extended Range Lord's Light 2.  The old Talos DecaCluster LRM launcher was replaced with a  15 tube Shigunga LRM Launcher.  These came from an overrun produced for the Mauler battlemech.  Complementing these weapons was a Diverse Optics Type 30 Large Laser.  As with the other weapons, these also came from an excess production run, in this case the Phoenix Hawk, which replaced the Type 30 with a more advanced Extended Range model.  The DRG-2R retains both of the Victory 23R medium lasers, but moves the rear facing torso mounted to fire forward.

Other changes to the Dragon include an increase in armor plating.  Intended to serve in the assault or defensive anchor roles, the designers increased the armor protection by 25%.  This turned to the Dragon from a well protected mech to one with above average protection. Simulations have shown that the Dragon can absorb more damage then famed Warhammer or Marauder, increasing it odds of surviving on the modern battlefield.  The other major change was to the mech's cooling system.  With so many high heat energy weapons, the design team replaced the original heatsinks with double strength models.  While more expensive, these allow the mech to remain reasonably cool under all but the heaviest firing.  The designers also managed to mount an additional heatsink in the torso, filling some of the space that was freed up by using a smaller engine.

During the design process, the Rasalhague engineers noticed a similarity between the DRG-2R's weapon array and that of the Zeus, as design which had been acquired  from the Federated Commonwealth by the KungsArme.  As a result the DRG-2R soon acquired the nickname of the baby Zeus, much to the chagrin of Combine engineers who were helping the FRR with the project.

Dragon DRG-2M

Mass: 60 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Age of War/Star League
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/E-F-D-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 5,374,080 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,231

Chassis: Alshain Type S6-60H Standard
Power Plant: Vlar 300 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 54.0 km/h
Maximum Speed: 86.4 km/h
Jump Jets: None
    Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
1 Kali Yama Weapons Industries LB 10-X AC
1 Irian Weapons Works Medium Laser
    2 Holly LRM-5s
Manufacturer: Kali Yama / Alphard Trading Corps
Primary Factory: Kendall, Kalidasa (refit kits)
Communications System: Irian Orator-5K
Targeting and Tracking System: Wasat Aggressor Type 5

Overview:
Kali Yama were commissioned to provide refit kits for the Dragon following the
Outreach conference and largely handled this by adapting weapons and
electronics from their successful Orion.

Capabilities:
The DRG-2M struggles to cram in the larger autocannon adopted by Kali Yama.
Weight-savings come in replacing the missile launcher with a pair of the
ubitqious Holly launchers, and removing the rear facing laser.

The chassis, reactor and heatsinks aren't upgraded - the 'Mech doesn't tend to
run warm so double heatsinks weren't seen as needed. The new armour is
StarGuard CIV, a popular choice in the Federated Commonwealth and doesn't leave
the AFFC purchasers dependent on importing replacement armour plating. FWLM and
DCMS users are less happy with this choice.

Battle History:
Early recipients of the refit kits were the three surviving Tamar March
Militias, which had received a number of salvaged Dragons during the 3040s and
are now in desperate need of upgraded 'Mechs to fight the Jade Falcons and
Steel Vipers.

Deployment:
Having been built in the Free Worlds League, these refit kits are readily
available for the small number of Dragons in their possession. Most of the kits
have been exported to the Federated Commonwealth who have accumulated a large
number of Dragons in salvage over these years. Many of these need major refits
anyway, so a complete weapons, armour and electronics replacement is quite
welcome.

The Draconis Combine, building their own refits, would very much like not to
need to import the kits but the sheer number of Dragons in their forces more or
less require them to purchase from Kali Yama as well.

Re: Optimizing the Dragon/Grand Dragon
« Reply #10 on: January 23, 2021, 11:36:40 AM »

The DRG-2D is the the latest development from Project Aegis, Duke Sandoval's program to strengthen the defenses of the Draconis March.  Following the successful upgrades to the Urbanmech, Whitworth and Vindicator, the Duke saw a need for a heavier mech able to anchor a battle line.  One mech found be available in large numbers was the Dragon, one of the signature mechs of the hated Draconis Combine.  Realizing that beggars can't be choosers, Duke Sandoval ordered the development of a new model of the Dragon that would be become the backbone of the Draconis March Militia heavy units.

During the development of the new mech, the design team spent a significant amount of time looking at whether or not to replace the massive Vlar engine with a smaller Pitban 240 model.  The smaller engine would save significant weight for additional weapons and equipment.  However, after much discussion, including meetings with a number of senior officers in the DMM, it was decided to retain the larger engine.  With so few mechs available to the Draconis March following the reassignment of units to the Clan front, it was felt that the best tactic would be to hold the DMM's heavy units in reserve and deploy them to reinforce the line once the enemy has revealed their main point of attack. The higher speed to of the Dragon would allow the meh to move into position faster, hopefully blunting the enemy attack quickly.

Having decided to retain the Vlar engine, the designers then look at changes to the mech's weapons systems.  The Imperator-A Autocannon was removed and replaced with a pair of ChisComp 43 Special Large Lasers.  These came from a large stockpile left over when the the Enforcer was upgraded and are also slated to be used on the new Watchman mech, helping ease logistics.  One of the lasers is mounted in the mechs right arm, replacing the Autocannon while the other is mounted in the torso using space freed up by removing the Autocannon's ammo bay and feed mechanisms.  The Telos DecaCluster LRM launch was also removed and replaced with a Sian/Ceres Jaguar LRM Launcher.  These LRM lunchers were removed from the Vindicators that were upgraded as part of Project Aegis.  While most of the Aegis mechs have tried not use ammo based weapons as a cost savings measure, it was felt that the LRM would prove useful in some cases.  Given the mech's defensive role, it has been suggested that the LRM launchers will typically be used to carry special munitions such as Thunder Rounds and Smoke missiles if they are available. The reason for using the smaller launcher was to try and reduce the cost of ammunition expenses.  By reducing the number of missiles per salvo, it was hoped to reduce the ammo expenditure in a typical battle by approximately 40%.  So far battle simulations have proven this to be accurate.

For secondary weaponry, the DRG-2D retains the Victory 23R medium lasers of the original Dragon and adds a Zippo Flamer in the head to handle any infantry it may encounter.  Given the location of the weapon, many troops have begun referring to the flamer as the "Dragon's Breath".  With addition to the heat generating large lasers, the Dragon's cooling system had to be upgraded.   A single heatsink was added to the mech, while switching to double strength models.  This allows the mech to maintain a high rate of fire without easily overheating.   Other changes to the mech include replacing the electronics with the same Acherner Electronics HICS-11 and Federated Hunter systems used by the Vindicator.  This change was mainly to simplify training and logistics for the DMM.  The other change was to up-armor the design, add 2 tons of armor plating.  This allows the mech to withstand more damage, allowing it to survive longer on the battlefield. The new armor plating also modifies the silhouette of the design, making it look less like the Dragon.  This has resulted in the final change to the mech, a new name the St George, given to it in the expectation that it will be a Dragon killer.
