Flame On! Contest number nine features another niche light 'Mech by way of House Steiner. In true Lyran fashion we get even heavier this time around as we break into the thirty-five ton weight class. To be honest I don't ever think we've utilized the Firestarter too much in our home campaigns. My opinion would likely rate this as an over specialized 'Mech which has limited applications. Perhaps I am wrong in this assumption and would love to be shown the error of my ways. Unfortunately I couldn't find a MotW Article: Firestarter on the main boards so there is only the link from BattleTechwiki below to inspire you.
https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Firestarter
Optimal Design Thoughts on the Firestarter
Role. Infantry destroyer, tank cooker, and disruptor of a well designed heat scale the Firestarter is a Mech that will win few battles on its own but can be an interesting asset if used correctly. Presumably keying in on high energy opponents this fast moving (6/9 MP meets my Light Mech minimum) can dramatically reduce their capabilities. Setting other objects ablaze can also serve to cover friendly unit movement and slow enemy advances. Meant to impede adversaries as opposed to other military components it is no surprise to me that this Mech might not be a favorite per say. I like odd balls though and those who dare to be different which the Firestarter certainly is.
Factories. 1 [2]
[DESTROYED] Skye (Argile Technologies) Lyran Commonwealth
Beginning production in 2550 it produced the FS9-H exclusively until 2776 and the Amaris Coup with nearly 3,000 Firestarters in total seeing active duty. According to House Steiner Sourcebook (pg 67) the Battle of Skye in 2895 lasted for thirteen months and destroyed not only this factory but large swaths of the planet.
[DESTROYED?] Erdvynn (Diplass Technologies) Rim Worlds Republic
Mentioned under Infrastructure Ingerity in Field Report 2765: Periphery (pg 10-11) as a supplemental site for Diplass BattleMechs. This facility and it's production started sometime after the Reunification War apparently with an agreement with the Lyran Commonwealth. While I can find no specific instance of its destruction we must presume that it was destroyed. Diplass facilities were said to be damaged during fighting with SLDF who no doubt would have salvaged whatever they could have.
Coventry (Coventry Metals) Federated Commonwealth / House Steiner
Following the destruction of Argile Technologies in 2895 this facility picked up production of the Firestarter. Presumably this occurred around 2900 sometime during the Third Succession War. In 3049 they produced the first lostech version of the Firestarter, the FS9-S.
Internal Structure. The three ton Argile H/09 chassis developed for the original design appears to have been unchanged till 3049. This is when the Foundation Ultralight EndoSteel which weighs a ton and a half was designed by Coventry Metals. So either choice exists at this time for designers to play with.
Engine. The GM 210 Fusion Engine allows for what I consider minimum speed for a Light BattleMech. Any slower than 6/9 and you’re asking for big trouble in this fragile war machines which often rely on speed for life. Without high armor to stop damage Lights must make opponents miss and the Firestarter can do that at these speeds if only a little bit. The 210 XL Engine is a little hard to come by at this time but I see several of our designers pulled it off.
Jump Jets. Six Luxor Load Lifters allow the Firestarter to leap 180 meters which is a big plus. This mobility allows the Light BattleMech to maneuver effectively in confined spaces like cities or forests which helps it survive in heavy combat situations. I might go as far to say that these Lifters are a must for the Firestarter but I won't require them at this late date.
Heat Sinks. It doesn't appear that any Firestarter available in 3050 utilized Double Heat Sinks. While ten Single Heat Sinks are pretty common and easy design wise they really don't keep their Mechwarrior cool. With a high heat energy arsenal and jump jets pilots have to bracket fire and monitor their movement carefully or heat will be a problem for you more then your enemy. I would suggest Double Heat Sinks as a relatively simple lostech upgrade for the Firestarter which would make it a more effective design.
Cockpit & Gyro. Not much can be done here to improve the performance of the machine given the available level of technology. However, both components are plentiful and have proven to be reliable over time.
Armor. The thirty-five ton chassis has a max armor factor of 119. Seven tons of armor would be a 112 armor factor while six and half tons of Ferro-Fibrous would be 116 armor factor. The FS9-H features five and a half tons of Livingston Ceramics standard plating which has a 88 armor factor or approximately 74% of max protection. The lostech FS9-S may have switch the brand of armor to Durallex Nova but it provides the same protection as it's 3025 precursor. The FS9-A, which was the original Firestarter, had six tons of armor thanks to having Small Lasers instead of Machine Guns and their ammunition which equals a 96 armor factor or approximately 81% of max protection. The only other existing model is FS9-M or Mirage which I would disqualify here for dropping not only the Flamers but adding three tons of armor! Not sure what good eight and half tons, a full ton and a half over max, would do except waste tonnage.
Weapons & Equipment. A Firestarter must have a Flamer, at least for this contest it must, as this weapon defines this Light BattleMech. Because of this and it's other point defense arsenal this design has to get in close to utilize it's weaponry. Also this thing runs hot as much of its firepower is bought to you by energy weapons. Ammo explosions from said heat build ups could be a concern or at least it is to me.
Design Criteria
Design: Firestarter Light BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 35 tons
Weaponry: Flamer is a must!
Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. I've also become a fan of massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries (Free Worlds League in particular has gone in this direction) which could provide closer equivalents to Clan LRMs. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Produced by the Lyran Commonwealth (House Steiner) the Firestarter is seemingly deployed by every Successor State. I suppose the LCAF wouldn’t have minded the sale of this Light ‘Mech to others as they traditionally prefer heavier war machines. Distant purchases by the Capellan Confederation (House Liao) and Federated Suns (House Davion) would be plausible in my opinion. The dawn of the Federated Commonwealth alliance bought further opportunities for the proliferation of this design to the AFFC at large but it still appears in limited numbers there. Salvage opportunities abound for the Draconis Combine (House Kurita) and the Free Worlds League (House Marik) throughout the Succession Wars. The ComGuards also deployed the Firestarter on Tukayyid against the Invading Clans but along with the Capellans probably field the least of these ‘Mechs. Mercenaries would also be another user of this ‘Mech which reaches out into the Periphery thanks in part to Amaris who had a factory for this design.
Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday December 27, 2019 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

All the same rules apply for this one folks I just didn't have time to finish this write up off.

Over the course of the Succession Wars the Draconis Combine captured a number of Firestarters from the forces of the Lyran Commonwealth. While some of the mechs were put into service with the DCMS, many moderate to heavily damaged examples were put into storage, where they sat for many years. Following the Clan assault, the DCMS found itself in need of replacing large numbers of Mechs which had been destroyed during the invasion. One of the biggest problems was that the DCMS faced a shortage of light mechs, as the factories which built the Panther were lost to the Clans. In an effort to make up the shortage the DCMS contracted with Diplan Mechyard to rebuild the many stored Firestarters into new mechs for the Combine regiments. In conjunction with this contract, Diplan Mechayards received a contract to build a new mech, the first they had built in centuries. Using funding from Hachiman Taro Electronics Limited, Diplan upgrade a component factory on Aix-la-Chapelle into a full production facility. The company has been rebuilding Firestarters from the DCMS, using the mechs to test new equipment for Diplan's new mech, the Hitman.
Diplan has produced 2 variants of the Firestarter at Aix-la-Chapelle. The FS9-K was turned into a hard hitting strike mech. Diplan Engineers started by stripping the mech to a bare chassis. They then replaced the old GM 210 engine with a new GM 210XL engine. The extra light engine is being developed for us on the new Hitman mech. By using the engine on the Firestarter, the engineers not only save weight for other upgrades, but get to field test the new engine before the Hitman enters into service. To provide the Firestarter with an extra boost of speed, the mech carries a MASC system. This unit, the same as the one that will be carried by the Hitman, allows the Firestarter to race away from dangerous situations.
The Mech's weapons have been updated to provide more of a punch. 2 of the flamers and the the machine guns have been removed and replaced with an Extended Range Large Laser. These are supported a pair of arm mounted flamers and medium lasers that are retained from the original Firestarter. With all of the heat generated by the weapons, the designers replaced the old cooling system with double strength models.
The Firestarters old electronics have been replaced with new models. The Sipher CommCon SCU-4 and Cat's Eye 5 are reliable systems found in numerous mechs in the DCMS. Using these systems simplifies logistics and makes it easier to support the Firestarter in the field. The Firestarter also carries a C3 Slave, allowing the mech to take advantage of C3 networks for improved targeting abilities.
Lastly the old Livingston Ceramics armor has been replaced with New Samarkand Royal Ferro-Fibrous armor. The advanced armor provides extra protection to the mech.
The FS9-KC3 was designed to serve as a command mech for a light mech lance. While sharing many components, most notably the GM 210XL engine, with the FS9-K, the -KC3 removes the Large Laser for a C3 Master Computer. Given the limited combat capability of the -KC3, the design team felt the mech was best suited as an advanced electronics unit. The C3 Slave and MASC systems were removed and replaced with A Guardian ECM and Beagle Active Probe. This allows the -KC3 to serve as a high tech scout unit. Lastly the -KC3 retains the standard heat sinks of the FS9-H since the limited weapons do not require the extra cooling capabilities.

The FS9-Z was developed after the clan invasion in response to the Elemental Battle Armor. The original Firestarter was considered one of, if not the best, anti-infantry mechs in existence, With it's machine guns and flamers, the Firestarter could quickly devestate large infantry formations. Unfortunately these weapons were not as effective against armored infantry. Coventry Metal Works has proposed an upgrade to the Firestarter which would turn it into an Elemental hunter. Retaining the Endo Steel frame of the FS9-S, the FS9-Z switches to an Omni/Edasich 210XL. A joint program, between Coventry Metal Works and Edasich Motors, this has replaced the old Omni 210 that was built by Coventry Metal Works. The new engines frees up additional mass for other upgrades.
All of the Defiance B3M Medium Lasers, Diverse Optics Type 10 Small Lasers and 3 of the 4 Hotshot Flamers have been remove from the Firestarter. In the place there are 4 Defiance P5M Medium Pulse Lasers and 3 Magna 200P Small Lasers. The Pulse Lasers not only hit harder then standard Medium Lasers, they are more accurate, which has proven valuable against small targets like the Elementals. The Small Pulse Lasers, one of which is mounted to protect the mech's rear, can be used against Battle Armor or regular infantry, allowing the mech to retain some anti-infanty capability. Lastly the Firestarter retains the Anti-Missile System of the FS9-S. While many mechwarrior complain that the AMS does not carry enough ammo for extended encounters, in this case the AMS has proven very effective agains the Elementals SRM launchers. With only a limited number of shots, the Elementals tend to run out of ammunition before the AMS. The center torso mounted Flamer has been retained. This allows the Firestarter to fulfill the incendiary, as well as for use against conventional infantry and tanks.
To cope with the heat from the new weapons array the Firestarter carries a 10 double strength heatsinks. This allows the mech to keep up a high rate of fire.
Lastly, the FS9-Z removes the beagle active probe. This allows the Firestarter to carry 1.5 tons of additional armor, providing much needed additional protection.

A good start Irose but your third design I would question as a Firestarter should probably have at least one Flamer just cause its still a Firestarter. Thoughts?
-
I figure the Firestarter has 2 main roles on the Battlefield - incendiary work and anti-infantry. The FS-9Z is designed for the anti-infantry role - in this case to counter the Elemental. I figured the pulse lasers are more useful in this role. If you really feel it needs a flamer then I would replace the forward CT small pulse laser with a flamer.
Let me know and I will adjust the design and fluff accordingly.
-
I would say the Flamer is a must for the Firestarter. My bad for leaving this incomplete

Overview:
For decades engineers at Majesty Metals & Manufacturing (M3) have been
attempting to reverse engineer the Firestarter and finally achieved the
feat in 3050. The variant they ended up with was the FS-9K variant. A total of
six were built, with four going to the 1st Canopian Light Horse and the last
two retained as test vehicles for new technology.
Their next desire was to modernize the Firestarter. However, to do this
they would need help. Diplomatic efforts over the past decade to repair or
improve relations with the Capellans and Taurians and the engineers hoped that
the recovery of this ancient design. The Capellans were the first to agree and
quickly followed by the Taurians. In exchange for providing the advanced
technologies, the Capellans would eventually receive 40% of all production from
the two facilities that would end up producing the Firestarter, M3 on
Canopus and Vandenberg Mechanized Industries (VMI) on Illiushin. The Capellans
would supply the initial fifty 210XL engines until the two factories could
produce the engines themselves. The advanced weapons would be supplied by the
Capellans for a longer period of time as means of control over the two
periphery powers.
Capabilities:
The Firestarter maintains a pair of flamers for anti-infantry work and
potential combat against battle armor, like those on the Clan front. It's
intended mission is as a striker and deep raider. To accomplish this it is
armed with an ER large laser and Guardian ECM unit. In addition to the flamers,
a medium pulse laser and small laser provide additional firepower. Ten double
heats are mounted to handle the heat of the energy-based battery, but proper
heat discipline still needs to be maintained. Seven tons of standard provide
nearly 30% more armor protection than the original FS-9K.
Variants:
The lone variant was developed by the Capellans and removes the ER large laser,
medium pulse and one fo the flamers and replaces it with an ER PPC.

Here's one more.
This is a rather simple modification which involves the upgrading of the armor to the ferro-fibrous compound. Weapons modifications include the replacement of the two medium lasers with a single medium pulse laser. The centerline flamers were removed and replaced with a pair of machineguns and a ton of ammo. These changes cut down on the heat burden of the original FS9-H. The mission remains the same as it still means infantry suppression and scouting.

Very nice Abele!!
-
Okay, updated the FS-9Z with a flamer.
-
The F9-P is a nightmare that has been seen in limited numbers in the rimward area of space near the Federated Commonwealth's Periphery border and the Taurian Concordat. All of the information about this mech comes from a report on one that was captured by the TDF on Dicallus. The mech was unmarked but appears to be operating with pirates from the Pirates Haven Star Cluster.
Based on the serial number, the basic chassis was traced to a shipment of of FS9-S Firestarters that was reported stolen by pirates from a AFFC depot on Tsamma. Exactly why the high tech mechs had been shipped to the backwaters of the old Federated Suns is not clear and the AFFC has not been willing to offer any explanation.
Based on a study of the mech it appears that the pirates made numerous modifications to the mech using components acquired across the rimward and spinward regions. The Omni 210 engine was replaced with a Hermes 210XL engines. These were part of shipment of engines for the Raven that was stolen from the Capellan Confederation. Based on the complexity of this engine replacement it appears the pirate band has significant technical capabilities.
The weapons arrangement of the Firestarter has been significantly altered. The Hotshot Flamers and Defiance B3M Medium Lasers have been retained but the Small Laser, Anti-Missile System and Beagle active probe have all been removed. In their place the mech carries 4 Armstrong Minigun Machine Guns stolen from the Outworlds Alliance and 4 Sian/Ceres Lynx SRM Launchers stolen from a shipment in the Capellan Confederation. The targeting and tracking system has been replaced with the simpler O/P 911, again stolen, this time from the Taurian Concordat. The number of weapons greatly taxes the cooling system of the Firestarter, to cope with the added heat the mech carries 10 double strength heatsinks that were stolen from the Federated Commonwealth.
While it is not clear who exactly built these mechs, it is clear how they are intended to be used. So far the mechs have been reported on a number of raids against lightly defended planets. On these raids the Firestarters have been used as terror weapons, the flamers, machine guns and SRMS, loaded with Inferno rounds, have terrorized the local populations into submitting to the pirates demands. The only reason we have any hard data on these mechs is because during a recent raid against Dicallus in the Taurian Concordat the pirate force ran into a company of the TDF mechs conducting a training maneuver. The TDF forces easily overwhelmed the pirates and captured the Firestarter which was ill-suited for fighting other mechs.

Firestarter Charlie
Seen as a revision of the old K variant that was considered inferior to the H variant, upgraded now with new lostech technologies Coventry Mech Works believes they are able to meet the needs of both H and K variant lovers. Still outfitted with the Hotshot Flamers and twin Coventry Light Autogun Machine Guns, the Charlie variant replaces the Defiance B3M Medium Lasers with a single Cyclops XII ER Large Laser. Utilizing a General Motors MASC-B system for short to intermediate bursts of speed for tactical flexibility. The Charlie variant is slightly less armored than the H or S variants but engineers believe between the new increased speed and the integrated SureFire 444 Anti-Missile System pilots won't notice the the loss.

Firestarter Prodigy
The Prodigy variant is built upon the same frame as the Charlie variant. Designed more as an Urban Prowler compared to the Charlies open field design. The Prodigy maintains the Defiance B3M Medium Lasers from the original design, incorporating into the design with the tonnage savings of its new XL engine a Guardian ECM system for increased survivability in its urban home. Some pilots have switched the ECM systems out for Beagle Active Probes depending on their roles within the Regiment. A TAG system was installed on this variant as a means for Regimental Command to utilize the Mechs to call in artillery support if needed.

Firestarter King
A King variant is being produced for both Federate Commonwealth and Draconis Combine forces the only change between the two is the DCMS model is outfitted with a C3 Slave unit, while the AFFC model is outfitted with a TAG both located in the Head. Designed to integrate into front-line units the King variant is a much cheaper option than the two specialist variants which are being allocated to Regimental Command forces for their individual specialty needs.

This Firestarter is a creation of Achernar Industries in the Federated Suns. It features a 210XL engine that allows this new Mech to carry more weaponry than the original. Armaments include an ER larger a pair each of medium pulse lasers and the ever-present flamers. To perform the task of being a scout a Beagle Active probe has been added. To achieve greater speed triple strength myomers have been installed. The standard armor has been replaced by ferro-fibrous armor and gives it 10% more protection without adding any extra weight.

I have one or two but I need some free time to write things done.
Great! Free time is harder and harder to come bye these days for me. Hopefully after Saturday things will open up though.
-
Icestorm today folks really put a damper on finishing up my design thoughts. Gonna try to finish them up soon.
-
Was horrible up by me shocked they only delayed my school and didn't cancel. Was thinking it wasn't as bad further south but guess it wasnt
-
We could have used a Firestarter to thaw some of the ice. ;)
It was a little slippery down here today but not as bad as the weather folks made it out to be. Concrete and non asphalt surface did experience frozen rain but the roads didn't freeze per say. We did treat them once and needed spotty touchups throughout with sidewalks needs more attention.
-
Funny enough I was thinking of order one of these for snow removal

-
Lol, definitely for a Firestarter. ;D
-
Was able to finish research on the Firestarter factory info and thoughts on internal structure. Hoping to wrap this up by tomorrow even though it is the end of the contest.
-
Still working here on the criteria but stumbling upon the Mirage (cool name) variant of the Firestarter I was thinking of a new concept I may detail after the contest concludes.
Less than six hours remaining folks!
-
I thought about playing with the mirage variant but it just wasn't any good. I've been told small lasers vs infantry sucks compared to mg or flamers with newer rules
-
I hear ya Bradshaw but I found the original Mirage quite flawed. Seems like it was over armored to me and I am no fan of Small Lasers either. However, I like the name and was thinking of FedCom or ComStar recon specialist on par with the Raven. We might have a bit of extra time here too as I discovered this in my criteria.
Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday December 27, 2019 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!
So it seems like we have another week here and I was in error about the 6 hour warning. Please continue your Firestarter musing.
-
Very odd as usually only 2 weeks
-
Perhaps Tak simply miscalculated
-
He is bad at basic math but not as bad our other friend matt who's great at advanced math but can't do basic any longer
-
Just super busy, hopefully this will give me time to do some other BattleTech stuff.
-

This is fine for me as I was too busy to deal with this project until now.
I have the stats and the fluff idea. I just need to write it down after doing some other things (3rd rank on my to-do-list).

To: Loremaster Kael Pershaw
From: Merchant Michael
Subject: Invasion of Barcelona
Loremaster,
As requested, we headed towards the Barcelona system to check for details about the latest invasion by the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth and their successful retake of the system over our forces. In spite of the Federated forces still in system, we managed to get into system and do a successful survey of the planet before extracting ourselves to a Jade Falcon world and prosecuted with the interrogations of the remains of our defending forces.
I must say that the approach via a Pirate Jump Point was very efficient and allowed us to perform our mission. I would not recommend such Dezgra tactics for true war operations lead by our Touman against the Freebirths of the Inner Sphere but it is perfect for the type of “merchant business†you sent me to do on Barcelona.
You will find enclosed the results of these debriefings and I will let you judge if the Provisional Garrison unit assigned to Barcelona is still worth of the trust of our Khan for its defeat against the Federated Commonwealth.
You will find below some information regarding a new BattleMech that seems to have appeared among the ranks of the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth operating under Kommandant Adam Steiner. Some of our Warriors even said that this BattleMech was only assigned to the 1st Sommerset Strikers or that it was assigned to a kind of ghost elite unit (a shocked veteran Warrior that had done all Operation Revival and was in the hospital even told me that he had seen the Callandra Witch coming for him, this coward was discharged with dishonour from our troops and his legacy erased from our genetic banks) but I found no evidence behind these claims in the battle footages and Battle ROMs I got access to as there seems to be several of these Firestarters among the Federated troops, each pairing distinctive marks quite recognisable. This could also be part of an elaborated trick to make us believe that there are more units being produced than in reality and thus confusing us about their real strength.
This is why I took the liberty to ask my fellow Merchants to look for any sign of this new BattleMech during their trips or in the reports they manage to get. So far, none has been find apart those from the battle of Barceona.
I do believe that the eyes of our Clan did not fail us as the look of this Firestarter, that we christened FS9-SAS both for S Model Adam Steiner (as we do believe he was involved in its development) and for the Special Armed Services of the Star League Defence Forces, whose deep raids and head hunting missions, this BattleMech should be able to perform, the look of this Firestarter is far more angular than the classical one, a proof of the use of Ferro-Fibrous Armour. If like I think it is this BattleMech is a prototype or a retrofit of the existing FS9- S, this armour is probably the same that could be seen on the different BattleMechs produced by Coventry Metal Works, which could meant that its protection has been increased.
Apart from this slightly different look, it seems to have the same capacities as the standard FS9-S, being able (according to our Warriors) to fool our battle computers or to do “its†job of burning everything down but without any real data we cannot know this for sure and we might see this as an overreaction of defeated Warriors making a new “wonder weapon†responsible of their defeat (see two paragraphs above).
What further complicates the estimates is that this Firestarter is not meant to fight in the front lines like all true Warriors should do but rather to act as a deep reconnaissance unit, being able as our forces experimented on several occasions to jam our sensors and to detect hidden units. This probably means that it is using a combination of Guardian ECM and Beagle Active Probe.
However on one footage, I was able to see a Firestarter reach the speed of an Ice Ferret, which means that it is either using an advanced Extra Light Engine or a special equipment like a Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry. Since this footage was the only one where we could see such a ground speed, I would dismiss the first option for the second one.
Before I close this email, I would also like to inform you that our Warriors reported on several occasions running into remote sensors and destroying them. No one knows if this has a link with the new FS9-SAS or if this is a new Dezgra tactics used by the Federated Commonwealth Armed Forces. This is a matter that could be further investigated but if proved right, it would only be a further proof of their total lack of honour and that we, the Children of Kerensky, his Chosen, should be able to bring the light back in the Inner Sphere.
Since we know so little about its real capacities but knowing the fondness of Kommandant Adam Steiner for information (“Information is ammunitionâ€) and the likeness to have other Federated Commonwealth unit adopt his tactics as he was successful twice against our Clan because of his Dezgra tactics, I would suggest that the capture or the analysis of any Battle ROM with a Firestarter in it becomes a top priority for our Watch.
Yours,
Merchant Michael
Idea dismissed for now. We do not have the resources to micromanage everything. Let us focus our efforts on the bigger picture for now.

Lol, nice job Ice!

Engineers at the Earthhwerks facility on Calloway VI developed these two variants of their Firestarter from salvage taken over the past two centuries of warfare with the Lyran Commonwealth. The two variants are intended to serve alongside the new PHX-3M Phoenix Hawk on scouting and raiding missions. In a cost savings measure an endo-steel structure was not incorporated in the design, especially with the inclusion of the 210XL fusion engine. Armament consists of a pair each of medium pulse lasers and the ever present flamers along with a Streak SRM2 launcher. The rest of the weaponry is defensive in nature with the addition of an anti-missile system and an active probe or an ECM suite.
Initial trials have proven the Firestarter can keep up with the Phoenix Hawk on the battlefield and works well in the close support and anti-infantry role. Armor protection is adequate for a light Mech and it is excellent a short-ranged combat by Inner Sphere standards.

I think your the first bud, can't wait for the fluff. Just make sure you have it in by tomorrow, the final day of our contest here.

Very good, just a quick comment. Oliver is still in the hands of the Federated Commonwealth at this moment, circa 3053.

Thanks for the 411. It has been edited.

No worries Abele, it wasn't like your fluff didn't work before as the Phoenix Hawk was deployed by the AFFC as well but it read like a Marik product.
I should also mention that Ice Hellion's excellent fluff includes mentions of Barcella which I think is just an error and should read Barcelona.
Here is the Mirage which doesn't really qualify for this contest but I'd love to hear what you guys think about this Firestarter based BattleMech. Enjoy!

OVERVIEW
FedCom engineers scouring existing variants for every possible advantage against the Clans stumbled upon the FS9-M Firestarter. This heavily armored concept from Skye dubbed the Mirage was intended as more of a frontline fighter without the Flamers. Corean Enterprises of New Avalon was intrigued by the possibilities that lostech could further upgrade this well protected war machine into a premier reconnaissance unit. Authorities enamored with the thought that this Skye innovation would be embraced by the entire Federated Commonwealth approved a limited run of the newly renamed FS9-D Mirage.
CAPABILITIES
Based on the old FS9-M concept with advanced components like Foundation Ultralight Endo Steel provided by the FS9-S this new Mirage was Davion built. This resulted in six and a half tons of StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous from the VLK-QD Valkyrie being used to maximize the new BattleMech’s protection. Despite designers’ best efforts the construction process still resulted in excess armor (+6) because of a lack of internal space. However, featuring a ton less of armor (+1 excess) than the earlier FS9-M which used standard plating was considered by many to be a plus. Four Photech 806c Medium Lasers from the Centurion provided the offensive firepower of the Mirage which had better range than its point defense wielding forerunners. The real gains in capabilities were made by the sophisticated electronics package that the reengineered Light ‘Mech offered. A Beagle Active Probe could find almost any hidden enemy while a TAG can paint targets for friendly artillery. The Guardian ECM Suite not only defended these superior detection and tracking devices but could also jam enemy sensors if so desired. While these bulky components resulted in tight working conditions on the interior for technicians’ designers were pleased with the just under than four million C-bill cost of the new machine. This was only nine hundred thousand more than the FS9-M and much less than other nations premier Light surveillance assets.
DEPLOYMENT
Thus far the FS9-D Mirage has only been made in a limited run which shows promise but remains to be embraced by many units. Training formations like NAIS were the first to receive the Mirage but acceptance of this product by Albion and Sanglamore Cadres has been slow at best. Albion’s rivalry with NAIS and Sanglamore’s dim view of this Davion rip off maybe partially to blame but proponents hope that actually battlefield performance can overcome any lingering doubts.

FS9-MX Firestarter
Following the Clan Invasion in 3050, Coventry Metal Works acquired a contract with the Lyran State Command of the Federated Commonwealth to produce an upgraded Firestarter BattleMech for service with the AFFC. CMW had already submitted a proposal to the Lyran State Command for such an upgrade, but until the Clan Invasion began, had yet to receive an answer.
With the sudden appearance of a heretofore unknown threat (and one whose depth the FC intelligence community could only offer guesses toward), CMW was instructed to proceed ASAP with the new Firestarter design.
Based upon the FS9-M Mirage, the new Firestarter was intended to serve as a formidable scout and scout hunter. Negotiations between Mountain Wolf BattleMechs (who had just begun reconstruction of their facilities on Vendrell to produce a Lyran version of the Merlin BattleMech) resulted in CMW acquiring the plans for the once extinct GM 210XL Fusion Engine (intended for the Night Hawk BattleMech currently being designed and tested).
CMW added their own experimental technology in the form of a prototype Endo-Steel Internal Structure intended for the new Hollander light BattleMech.
Using these two technologies (and double-strength heat sinks), Coventry Metal Works was able to fashion the prototype FS9-MX Firestarter into a formidable light striker. However, the revelations of the Clan "Toads" (i.e., Elemental infantry) and their vulnerability to fire-based weaponry forced the Lyran State Command to reject the first prototype (which incorporated six Medium Lasers and lacked any Flamers).
The second attempt debuted in 3053, showing the same speed and mobility as existing Firestarters, while boosting increased armor protection (although not quite as much as the older Mirage chassis). Armament consisted of two Purity-L Series Flamers, four Magna Mark II Medium Lasers (one rear firing), one Magna Mark I Small Laser, and four Magna 200P Small Pulse Lasers.
This weapons loadout resulted in a BattleMech capable of annhilating entire platoons of unarmored infantry -- and able to deal with the threat posed by Clan Elemental forces. While still posing a credible threat against hostile 'Mechs.
The FS9-MX was authorized into limited production in 3053, with plans by the Lyran State Command to supply at least one lance to every formed Regiment within the Lyran Commonwealth by 3060. Although production never quite managed to reach such an ambitious goal, the appearance of the FS9-MX Firestarter on the front lines of the Clan Occupation Zones soon proved the capability of the design against both Clan Elementals and light-weight OmniMechs.

Yeah, I'm real sorry masterarminas but the time stamp says your an hour and a half too late. I'll review your design anyway but along with my own design of the Mirage it will be disqualified.
The contest is over folks. My work focus will be split between the review which I'll start in the morning and the next contest outline which will go up Sunday night.
Nice job everyone, thanks again!!

Sorry to hear that masterarminas, hope you had good holidays in spite of the extra work.
This time around for the Firestarter we were blessed with seventeen (17) different design concepts from six (6) designers. This pretty solid contest that last three weeks gave me some time to work on some other things and catch up in general. While we had three winners ultimately there could have been more if things turned out differently. Presentation is important and I encourage you guys to work together as there were some really awesome concepts offered up here. Off to start on the next contest folks, hopefully I’ll see you all there. Enjoy the review and thanks again for all your efforts!
Disqualified
17. FS9-D Mirage (Takiro)
My Mirage was more of a reconceptualization of the Firestarter than a refit. Meant to be the AFFC’s Raven this electronic warfare specialist would have been well suited with an ECM Suite, Active Probe, and TAG. Four Medium Lasers have nice range and provide suitable standoff weaponry. While I over did it with the armor (+6 excess) and was not happy with that it is in line with the original Mirage. Like its toughness too with the standard 210 Fusion Engine and all that plating plus the endurance of zero ammunition is desirable. Running out of internal space thanks to the EndoSteel, Ferro-Fibrous, and unmountable Double Heat Sinks was a minus though along with the wasted armor which was a bye product. Too bad I really like that name as a ghost which invokes this new role but it is not a Firestarter plus no Flamer so it is disqualified.
16. FS9-MX (masterarminas)
Another take on the Mirage variant was this beauty by masterarminas who it is good to see designing again. His infantry annihilator and toad squishier is armed with four Medium Lasers, 4 Small Pulses, a Small Laser, and two Flamers. Twelve Double Heat Sinks barely cool an Alpha Strike but you’d have to be at point blank range to do that. Still monitoring movement especially jumping and weapons fire is a must for Mechwarriors here. Seven tons of standard armor for a near max protection factor of 112 helps you stand up to tight quarters combat against infantry which it is very capable of dispatching. Thanks to EndoSteel and the superb use of a future GM 210 XL Engine from the Night Hawk masterarminas fits all this into one Light Mech, not bad. Unfortunately, it was entered too late and must be disqualified which really sucks. This was a good one and I hate to do that.
Deficient
15. FS9-MG (Abele)
This level one upgrade only uses Ferro-Fibrous as a lostech upgrade which is fine but what I didn’t like was the range reduction of the weaponry. The Medium Pulse is a nice weapon for the Firestarter but losing the Medium Lasers for it reduces your reach. More Machine Guns is fine too but do we really need another ton of ammo which is a hundred shots per weapon! While heat is reduced from this loadout moving especially jumping can result in an overheat which makes for a big explosion. Yes, that is unlikely but in combat the worse case often finds you. Fluff was a little too simple too. Sorry pal would have liked to have seen better here.
13 & 14. FS10-M (Abele)
Thankfully someone tried their hand at a Marik version of the Firestarter which would certainly be plausible. I combined both variants (Beagle Active Probe/ Guardian ECM Suite) for one review as they are identical except for their advanced electronics. Your fluff is confusing as you say that neither version used EndoSteel as neither should have in my opinion. But in fact, one does – the first Beagle variant. While you didn’t explain it the Hermes 210 XL would be widely available thanks to the Jackal which began production in 3052 so I had no problem with that. The Streak SRM-2 seems to be poorly placed here for anti-infantry support role as I’d rather have two SRM-2s armed with inferno rounds. Too bad cause this would be a nice companion to the Phoenix Hawk. Sadly, these designs were a little muddled and further work needed although it has promise.
12. Charlie (Bradshaw)
A combination of H (the original) and K (Large Laser) variants which thanks to advanced technology can work. Somehow crafting a 210 XL Engine is an issue and your fluff is a bit thin on how to address that while adding a MASC would require a lot of rework. I do like the speed and weight savings offered but like it would be costly. Like your half ton of Machine Gun ammo the best and wish more people would do that but not sure I like the Anti-Missile System. Both those guns are explosive and this design can run awful hot even with Double Heat Sinks. 25 heat from weapons and 6 more possible with jumping. Plus, only five tons of armor is again a bit thin and your pouring money into this thing. Too expensive for me.
11. FS-9TP (Abele)
I like the idea of Majesty Metals & Manufacturing trying to build their own Firestarter in the Magistracy of Canopus. The government would be behind such an effort and I support the build myself but this design is a bit too advanced. An XL Engine on a Periphery Mech is probably too early at this point even though I am pointing to an earlier alliance between Sun Tzu and the Centrellas for the purpose of supporting Isis in the Free Worlds League. I would have preferred something simpler in that vein and involving the Taurians is something that is just a non-starter at this point. The design seems like a longer-range harasser with an ER Large, Medium Pulse, two Flamers, and a Small Laser. The ECM would certainly help disrupt enemy formations perhaps ideally as a raider and deep striker. A bit flawed overall but I liked the chance you took here with fluff. Don’t be disappointed as whacker ideas could work.
10. FS9-KC3 (Irose)
I was not as high on this C3 Master Mech as I was its base model because of its lack of speed (no MASC) and its limited short ranged arsenal. Yes, this design should never be participating directly in combat with all its electronic goodies but two Medium Lasers and two Flamers really aren’t a threat to much. Plus, you got get close to use them which requires speed or get away from your opponent which is more difficult without the MASC. The C3 Master, Guardian ECM, and Beagle Active Probe are certainly outside the box here wish I like. Interesting concept but not enough supporting equipment to make it viable in my opinion.
Close
9. FS-9L (Abele)
I could see the Capellans wanting to expand especially into the Firestarter business and the 210 XL Engine would be available thanks to the Raven. The ER PPC and Medium Laser I like better than the FS-9TP as it has better reach and can serve as a raider with pop. The minimum one Flamer keeps you in the contest and a Small Laser add slightly to the overall arsenal. Not bad, it is better than the FS-9TP but still lacks something to me. Plus this variant is more plausible as I can see the Capellans building something from salvage for testing or perhaps buying from the Canopians for some chassis. Plus you could field test these raiders on the battlefields of the 3rd Marik Civil War. Not bad but just not good enough.
8. Prodigy (Bradshaw)
I like Prodigy a lot better than the concept it was based on which was Charlie that probably tried to do too much. This well described urban prowler is a nicely armed scout with two Medium Lasers, four Flamers, and twin Machine Guns. This loadout is much more heat friendly and manageable than Charlie plus the Guardian ECM, or Beagle Active Probe if so desired, with a TAG is well suited to the Firestarter. The MASC and 210 XL Engine would require a lot of work but I like them here. Armor is slightly better too which is a major advantage to me. Not bad at all Bradshaw unfortunately you were beat out by another design.
7. King DC (Bradshaw)
While I really liked this simple upgrade another competitor beat you out with something a bit more complex. Still this joint effort to upgrade the Firestarter summed up as the King variant was good with four Medium Lasers and four Flamers. Kurita access to advanced internal structure made less sense for their models but I did like the C3 Slave. This is a solid addition to any Kurita BattleMech at this time. Sorry bud not a bad try, fluff could have been a bit better but I liked Irose’s concept better for the Dragon.
6. FS9-Z (Irose)
This Elemental killer or Toad stomper is a very solid concept which would only require the creation of Omni/Edasich 210XL Engine. Certainly, the Federated Commonwealth would be looking for a way to check the powerful advantage offered by Armored Infantry during the Clan Invasion. Barely qualifying as a Firestarter with a single Flamer to fulfill its original role against other conventional forces this design features six Pulse Lasers (four Medium and two Small) in order to decimate Elementals. With 30 points of damage max you could perhaps take out two Elementals a turn requiring three turns for the destruction of a point at close range. Good armor and I like the Anti-Missile System especially against Elementals. The ammo has got me worried about possible internal explosions. Ultimately the high price mostly due to the XL Engine which would likely be magnified and other lingering concerns make this design close but no cigar for me Irose, sorry! Be a nice test bed concept for something else one day perhaps.
5. FS9-D (Abele)
Using a standard chassis for what is perhaps the best upgraded version of the FS9-K is this Firestarter from Abele. The ER Large is well suited here on this Davion variant whose obsession with Light weight harassers is known. Two Medium Pulses and two Flamers can still do a number on enemy infantry which thanks to a Beagle Active Probe can be rooted out effectively. The Triple Strength Myomer is a nice touch on such a hot ‘Mech whose Double Heat Sinks could keep up with careful management but why not go for that +9 bonus which ramps up movement to 7/11. This is very nicely done. I would have liked a little more than five and half tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor for a 98 factor but it ain’t bad. My biggest question is where does the 210 XL Engine come from? Very close on this one but it just comes up short. I’d like to combine your concept with Bradshaw’s King approach of a SDK joint design. That would have easily won, sorry bud. Great concept though.
4. FS9-SAS (Ice Hellion)
First off great fluff on this entry Ice Hellion, written from the viewpoint of a ‘Merchant’ / pseudo-Watch operative this summation on the Battle of Barcelona was well done. Eluding to a shock veteran sighting the Callandra Witch from the Pentagon Civil War and Adam Steiner’s involvement was very well done. While your armament was paired down to two Medium Lasers and two Flamers your recon capabilities were ramped up with Guardian ECM, Beagle Probe, and Remote Sensors. A MASC gives you extra speed while EndoSteel and Ferro-Fibrous provide extra weight but I am guessing you ran out of space as there are no Double Heat Sinks. So very close, I liked one design just a bit better but won’t mind if this were a one off custom job built just for the Somerset Strikers.
Winner
3. King FC (Bradshaw)
This cheaper variant is a winner in my opinion with EndoSteel, Ferro-Fibrous, and Double Heat Sinks all doing a great job of simply improving on the existing design. Six tons of advanced armor provides a 107-armor factor which is close to max protection for a thirty-five tonner. Weaponry is simplistic with four Medium Lasers splitting time with four Flamers and while this could cause heat issues especially combined with jumping simply alternating fire relieves any problems. Going all energy weapons eliminates the need for resupply and it can stay in the field forever. The TAG in this case works great for artillery support while scouting something the Federated Commonwealth would certainly desire. I would have loved to have had a deeper fluff understanding of this coordinated improve effort between Kurita and Steiner-Davion but it works. Nice job!
2. FS9-K (Irose)
Irose came up with this design using captured Firestarters from the Steiner front during the Succession War and the new GM 210 XL Engine from the soon to be released Hitman. I really like this Mech developed by Diplan at their emerging Aix-la-Chapelle facilities. Replacing Light Mechs destroyed by the Clans during the invasion makes a lot of sense and this high tech upgrade certainly fits the bill. It is an extensive upgrade utilizing a MASC also found on the Hitman and a C3 Slave to tie in with other equipped units. Armed with an ER Large, two Medium Lasers, and two Flamers it has variable range armament. Despite Double Heat Sinks you still have to watch your movement and rate of fire. Six tons of Ferro-Fibrous protecting that old Argile H/09 chassis is pretty solid. Great job on this one.
1. F9-P (Irose)
Love this pirate nightmare created through theft and duplicity out in the Pirate’s Haven Star Cluster. The unknown group fits with the Salient Horizon storyline and is a nice touch. Stealing components from the Federated Commonwealth (FS9-S and Double Heat Sinks), Capellan Confederation (210 XL Engine and SRMs), Outworlds Alliance (Machine Guns), and Taurian Concordat (Targeting and Tracking Systems) is ballsy. Some may say stretches believability but at this time it fits plus this Terror Mech in the hands of bandits is well placed. Way to take a chance here Irose and it pays off big with a first place finish, well done!!
-
Knew I should have fluffed more with DC version was thinking it would be shipped to them where the C3 would be installed all the rest was built on conventry.
-
Congratulations to the winners.
As for the Double Heat Sinks, I didn't have room but I could have dropped the Ferro Fibrous for it but I didn't see these Double Heat Sinks as fitting the recon part of my version of the Firestarter.
-
That is understandable Ice, you very narrowly missed out this time around.

I’m laughing that the FS9-P won. The only reason I can up with it was because if your comments about the FS9-Z having no flamers (if you ever do an official Mirage contest the FS9-Z with no flamers is my entry). I figured I’d come with a design that emphasized the anti-infantry role.
The inspiration for the was the Bandit from the pirates haven star cluster. I couldn’t necessarily justify building a mech from scratch but a heavily modified mech using stolen components seemed reasonable. Of course future runs depend on the availability of more firestarters and the necessary components. I can see the weapons
Load out changing based on what is available(I.e. what they can steal).
-
The whole concept of the Firestarter as a weapon of terror in the hands of pirates is just so spot on.
