GOL-2FC Goliath

Soon after capturing the Brigadier Corporation facility on Oliver, the AFFC reviewed the new Marik Goliath, the GOL-2M.  While impressed with the increase in firepower, armor protection, and heat dissipation, the team that surveyed the design recommended that Brigadier design and produce a different model for the AFFC.  Especially as the Federated Commonwealth does not rely on NARC Homing Beacons spotters to the same degree as the FWLM.

Their design (the GOL-2FC) reverted to 15.5 tons of standard armor plating (slightly more than 94% maximum coverage for an 80-ton Quad chassis) but utilized a much lighter Endo-Steel II internal structure.  The engine was retained, along with the thirteen DHS installed by Brigadier engineers and 'Mech designers.

The weaponry package was removed and replaced with a Defiance 1001 ER PPC (right torso), supported by two Delta Dart LRM-10 launchers fitted with Artemis IV Fire-Control Systems (right torso and left torso, fed by three tons of ammunition for a total of 18 tandem salvos).  CASE was retained in both the right and left torsos as well.

A Defiance B4M Medium Pulse Laser was installed in the center torso.

With three tons remaining and minimal critical slots, the design team at Brigadier decided to use a modified version of the Rawlings 55 Jump Jets from the Griffin production line on Hespersus II.  These jump jets alleviate (to some degree) the lack of the Goliath to torso-twist and bring arm mounted weaponry to bear against targets on the rear flanks.  While maximum jump distance was limited to just 90 meters, this was deemed enough to give the GOL-2FC a tactical advantage on the battlefield with the ability to maneuver into an opponents vulnerable rear if they got too close.  It also helps the Quad navigate through difficult terrain and bypass obstacles with some degree of ease.

Excess overheat production was roughly the same as that of the GOL-2M, which was deemed satisfactory by the AFFC.  Full-scale production of the design began in 3051 with the first new Goliaths arriving at AFFC units in the fall of 3052.

Re: Optimizing the Goliath
« Reply #19 on: September 04, 2021, 09:27:58 PM »

Many are surprised to learn that the Goliath is one of the more common Assault mechs in the Taurian Defense Forces. The reason for this is that during the Star League era a number of Goliaths were sold to the Periphery states at dirt cheap prices.  This was because the Goliath faced an uphill battle for acceptance due to the poor performance of the Scorpion and the disdain for quad battlemechs.  It was hope that the Periphery states would show the value of the mechs during their operations against pirates and generate interest, and more importantly orders, from the SLDF.  This plan had just begun to work when the Amaris Coup occurred, disrupting the SLDF's plans to acquire the Goliath.  After the Uprisings the TDF deployed a number of Goliaths and continued to work to keep them in operational condition during the Succession Wars.  They were aided in these efforts through a trickle of trade with the Free Worlds League.  Brokered by the Alphard Trading Corps, the TDF was able to acquire just enough parts from the Corean factory on Stewart to keep their Goliaths operational.

With the recovery of lost SLDF technology, the TDF contracted with Vandenberg Mechanized Industries to upgrade the Goliaths.  Several variants were tested before the final design was settled on.  By removing 7 heatsinks and switching to double strength models, the engineers were able to improve the cooling system while simultaneously saving weight to upgrades the weapons.   The weight savings allowed the replacement of the old Holly LRM racks with the Delta Dart LRM 15 launcher that is used on the Thunderbolt.  The engineers were able to use the same missile pod design as the Thunderbolt, only slight modifications were need to the Goliath.  To increase the endurance of the Goliath the ammo supply is doubled to 4 tons. The final addition is a medium laser for close in defense against opposing forces that get under the minimum range of the mech's main weapons.

To provide more protection to the mech, the old armor has been removed and replaced with a new Duralles Heavy Ferro-Fibrous armor.  For the same mass, this significanty improves the armor protection of the mech's legs.

The new Goliath has largely been met with enthusiasm from TDF mechwarriors.  One of the few complaints revolves around the additional ammo for the LRM racks.   As all 4 tons of ammo are located in the left torso, along with the machine gun ammo, there is concern that if enemy fire penetrates the left torso armor it could set off a a catastrophic explosion.  In response to these complaints VMI has begun looking at an alternate configuration, the GOL-2TE1.  This design removes the LRMs in favor of 2 more PPCs.  The ammo bin is replaced by heatsinks, which enables the mech to deal with the higher heat weapons. It was not yet been determined if the Goliaths will be upgraded to the -2TE1 configuration.

While the Lyran Commonwealth did produce the Goliath during the Succession Wars, they did value the mech, and as a result emphasized their maintenance.  To this end, Defiance Industries supplied the LCAF with the parts they need to keep their Goliath's operational.  Recently, in an effort to increase their profits, Defiance Industries has been looking into producing new Goliaths for the LCAF.  Recently several prototype Goliaths have come off the assembly line of Defiance Industries. It is expected that full production of the mech will begin soon.

The heart of the GOL-2S is the Hermes 320XL.  This is imported from the Free Worlds League.  It is believed that either Defiance Industries of Edasich Motors is working on a 320XL engine that will replace the League engine as soon as it is available.  The mass freed up by using the lighter engine, along with the removal of all of the GOL-1H's weapons allowed the design team to mount a pair of Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifles.  The quad design of the Goliath has proven to be a very stable platform for these massive weapons, during firing tests the Poland Main Model A was found to be 10% more accurate on the Goliath then the Victor. The massive size of these weapons, combined with the bulky engine force the engineers to come up with an innovated solution for the mech's ammo bays.  Two tons of ammo are stored in each of the mech's rear legs.  While unusual, this placed the ammo close to the end of the Gauss Rifle and actually simplified the ammo feed system.  The machine guns, used for defense against infantry, have been replaced with a pair of Maxell Small Pulse Lasers.  These are nearly as effective against infantry as the old MGs, but do not need ammo, removing the threat of an ammo explosion.  Rounding out the weapons array is a Defiance B3M medium laser.  This provides protection against any enemy forces that get into close range.

In an effort to better protect the mech, the armor has been upgrade to 16.5 tons of  Durallex Special Heavy armor.  This provides much better protection to the mech, more then even the famed Battlemaster.  The bulk of the additional armor is located on the legs, it is hoped this will help to protect against leg damage, which can be particularly crippling to quad mechs.  As the mech no longer mounts high heat weapons, the cooling system drops 7 heatsinks.  The use of double heatsinks was considered unnecessary and so single strength models were used to save money.

Goliath GOL-3D

Mass: 80 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Quad
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Age of War/Star League
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/E-F-D-A
Production Year: 2750
Cost: 8,659,200 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,825

Chassis: Corean VIII Standard
Power Plant: Hermes 320 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 43.2 km/h
Maximum Speed: 64.8 km/h
Jump Jets: None
    Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
    3 Rand PPCs
    1  Guardian ECM Suite
Manufacturer: MacAdams-Suharno
    Primary Factory: Stewart
Communications System: Corean TransBand-J9 w/Guardian ECM Suite
Targeting and Tracking System: Corean B-Tech

Overview:
With the Goliath being revisited in light of lostech recovery, the MacAdams-Suharno branch of Corean decided to explore the possibilities of double-heatsinks on the 'Mech. To fully utilise this, they replaced both LRM launchers with additional Rand PPCs, expecting to overstrain the cooling system. To their surprise, this wasn't the case and the demand for lostech 'Mechs once the Clans arrive led to the production of a refit kit to upgrade existing Goliaths to this specification.

Exported to the Federated Commonwealth, these upgrade packages are identified as 3D variants, due to a bureaucractic error having them labelled as manufactured at Corean's New Avalon plant.

Capabilities:
With three PPCs providing firepower equal to that of an Awesome but better ground speed, the GOL-3D is excellent for endurance and long range engagements. While it isn't particularly agile, it has been layered in upgraded StarGuard plating that drastically increases the protection - particularly on the vulnerable forward legs. The loss of Machineguns means that it's even more vulnerable at close ranges.

In addition, MacAdams-Suharno incorporated powerful ECM systems into the Goliath's electronics - believed to be a prelude of using the same technology on a new quadrupedal 'Mech that remains under development.

Deployment:
Thus far the GOL-3D has been seen only in service with the AFFC, although a number of Goliath pilots in mercenary units have expressed interest. The FWLM thus far seems more interested in the more advanced GOL-3M that entered production in 3047.

Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:
Mechwarrior Warren Hestrus of the 26th Lyran Guards had his Goliath upgraded after their retreat from Thun. The Goliath in question has been handed down to Hestrus after generations of service (it's the victor of the only recorded Goliath vs Goliath battle) and carried him through the Fourth Succession War, the War of 3039 and finally the Clan Invasion.

While the 26th Lyran Guards RCT is not expected to be combat ready for several years, having battled Clan Wolf on three worlds, Hestrus is eager to add more victories to his name, refusing promotion to officer status in order to ensure he remains on the frontlines for any action his unit may have.

I wasn't planning on joining in on the contest but Irose's 2S got me going. I took his concept to the 'max' for a refit of existing FedCom Goliaths. Basically dropped a Gauss, doubled the Heat Sinks plus one and threw on an ER PPC and an LRM-15 with Artemis. While it is a formidable mixed fire support asset it does have its drawbacks. One, obvious is increased danger for catastrophic ammo explosions. CASEs are really hard to fit with the lack of arms (twelve less overall critical spaces) in big Quads. What do you guys think?

Re: Optimizing the Goliath

Substituting an XL engine for a standard engine always seems like a major overhaul (not that I have not done it on occassion.)  If I were going for a field refit of the Goliath I would do something like this:

One of the largest users of the Goliath, the former Lyran Commonwealth made great efforts to maintain them.  While they did not produce new Goliaths, Defiance Industries would produce replacement parts, allowing the LCAF to repair all but the most badly damaged units.  With the recovery of lost Star League technology, the AFFC felt it was important to develop a field refit kit for the GOL-1H.  Several different field refit kits were developed before the AFFC finally settled on what would be come the -1S model.  This model removed all of the Goliath's weapons in favor of a new weapons array.  The Rand PPC has been replaced by the new Defiance 1001 ER PPC.  This provides a longer range punch, allowing the mech to engage clan mechs at nearly equal ranges.  The old LRM launchers have been removed and replaced with a Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifle mounted on the left side of the mech.  This weapon has equal range to the old LRMs but provides a stronger punch, one that is able to tear through the armor of most mechs.  Backing up the main guns are 2 Defiance B3M Lasers and 2 Maxell Small Pulse Lasers.  The B3Ms are used to deal with enemy mechs, typically lighter units, that get too close t o Goliath, while the Small Pulse Lasers fill the anti-infantry role that had been taken care of by the old Machine Guns.

The added mass of the Poland Main Model A required the design team to remove 7 heatsinks.  To compensate for this, the GOL-1S uses double strength models for the remaining heatsinks.  This allows the Goliath to maintain a steady rate of fire in all but the heaviest combat.  Finally in an effort to improve the protection of the Goliath the old StarSlab/3 armor has been replaced with the newer Glasgow Limited Primo Ferro-Fibrous Armor.  While weighing the same amount as the older armor, the advanced plating has significantly improved protection, especially on the mech's vulnerable legs.

GOL-2ADA Goliath

The GOL-2ADA Goliath was an initial concept developed by Corean Enterprises of Stewart before the full realization of the potential of recovered technology was understood.  This version of the 80-ton Quad 'Mech reduces the engine to a smaller 240 standard fusion engine, reducing ground speed to just 32.4 kilometers per hour walking and 54.0 kph running.  Corean decided to utilize double-strength heat sinks, but retained the standard chassis and armor (although armor protection was increased to 16.0 tons).  Due to the time involved in a redesign of the side torsos, CASE was not fitted, despite the heavy dependence on ammunition based weaponry.

The GOL-2ADA focuses on Air Defense and is rather optimized for that role.  The longest-ranged weapons are pair of Holly LRM-5 launchers (right torso and left torso), fed by two tons of ammunition for 24 tandem salvos.  Next is a Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Laser (center torso); while not quite as powerful as the Rand PPC originally mounted, the Sunbeam was chosen for its additional bit of range and slightly more compact nature.

Two Imperator Code Red LB-10X Autocannons come next (right torso and left torso), each fed by two tons of ammunition, typically one each of cluster and slug.  These weapons are formidable in the air-defense role and serve equally well against vehicles and 'Mechs.

Ten double-strength heat sinks eliminate all weapons heat from these weapons, but movement heat is still generated as excess overheat.

At close range--and to defend against infantry attacks--there is an Olympian Flamer in the right torso.

Finally, the design team fitted a powerful Irian Illuminator Searchlight in the head.  With a range of 5,100-meters (170 hexes!), this powerful spotlight can illuminate distant targets (both ground and air) for other 'Mechs and vehicles in the same unit as the GOL-2ADA.

Although slow, the GOL-2ADA proved a superb air-defense platform, as the stability of the Quad design simply adds to the effectiveness.  In the end, however, Corean only produced roughly sixty of the GOL-2ADA, deciding instead to reserve production lines for the newly developed GOL-2M that would be the "official" Free Worlds League model.  An occasional example is produced when requested for a small and select client base, but otherwise only those first sixty units remain in service.  However, it is rumored that Captain-General Marik is considering expanding the production lines on Stewart to restart limited construction of the GOL-2ADA alongside the GOL-2M.

GOL-2M-IST Goliath

Another specialized design concept by Corean Enterprises was the GOL-2M-IST:  the Infantry Strike Transport.  This Goliath variant is based on the GOL-2M, but sacrifices some weaponry and heat sinks to carry two four-ton Infantry Compartments, each able to hold either a full-strength 21-man Jump Infantry Platoon or a Squad of four Battle Armor Troopers.

[NOTE:  SSW does not seem to want to allow this on 'Mechs, so I had to use Cargo Bays (Standard) instead.  So, the cost may not be accurate, but the tonnage and critical slots are.]

The concept called for a heavily armored BattleMech that could carry Infantry into combat and retrieve them from even the hottest evac sites, all the while laying down fire and sustaining damage that no conventional infantry transport could sustain.

To that end, Corean installed a total of 14.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating and 11 double-strength heat sinks.  This is enough to use the long-range battery and run without overheating, though adding the AP battery will generate some excess overheat.

The main guns are four Holly LRM-5 launchers (two each right torso and left torso) with each fed by one ton of ammunition (24 quadruple salvos) and a Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Laser (center torso).  These guns are supported by two Diverse Optics Type 10P Small Pulse Lasers (right torso and left torso).  In addition there are two four-ton infantry compartments (right torso and left torso), each with a pair of doors on either the right or left side of the 'Mech.

One problem with these compartments is that only jump-capable Battle Armor or Jump Infantry units can utilize them effectively; foot infantry must rappel down on zip lines, while neither motorized nor mechanized infantry can use them at all.

Still, Corean engineers felt that this design was a cost-effective means to transport either two Squads of Battle Armor or two Platoons of Jump Infantry onto the battlefield, all within a unit more than able to hold its own in heavy combat conditions.

The FWLM agreed and limited production began in 3054.

Some intriguing concepts there guys. I've seen cargo space on Mechs before but not actual bays for infantry.
