Optimizing the Goliath
« on: August 29, 2021, 10:46:23 PM »

Contest number forty-eight brings us our second four-legged friend, the Goliath. This walking tank has been described as some what of a rarity during the Succession Wars and I have to agree with that for my own home games. Rarely featured this unseen is not one of my favorite BattleMechs of all time but I’m looking forward to you guys trying to change that. Add to that the 3M is considered one of the worst lostech upgrades of TRO3050 (two tons of machine gun ammo, WTF!?) and you have a good chance to make a real impact here. Don’t forget factoring in the Marik design traits (LRM-5s and Blazers) when trying your hand at this challenge. Thankfully we have both the Mech of the Week Article from the CBT main boards as well as the BattleTechWiki page to help inspire us.

Goliath - BattleTechWiki
https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Goliath

Design Criteria
Design: Goliath Assault BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 80 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday September 10th 2021 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

Gah, quads.  Hells Horses and the Republic finally find a way to do them better, but not until waaaaaay after the Jihad.

The problem is that quads can't torso-twist, and also don't have arms -- so that DRAMATICALLY limits their fire arcs, meaning that they need higher speeds than comparable bipeds in order to just aim their weapons.

The stop-gap solution (at least until the post-Jihad era) is quad turrets, which were developed in the pre-Star League era, but technically are considered level 3 because...reasons.

I really recommend allowing quad turrets, much like blazers are allowed for purposes of this design challenge, especially with a slow assault like a Goliath (4/6 quad is effectively equivalent to a 3/5 biped, imo).  With a turret, you can hunker down on a quad, side-step and keep firing, and generally lean into the (few) advantages that quads have.  Without them, the Goliath is only useful for fire support and...that's about it.  An overweight Archer with four legs.  Whoop de doo.  Or they're free victory points for anything that can flank them, which is basically everything.

Yeah unfortunately I can't allow turrets cause they are level 3 cause ...reasons. We already did the Scorpion without a turret or turrets which are great but not available at this point. I'm sorry but those are the limitations even though there are benefits like higher armor levels. And I'm sure you guys can out do the TRO3050 version.

About that... all the winning Scorpion designs you chose had 6/9 speed, which was enough to reposition the (limited) fire arc of its big gun.

The Goliath maxes out at 5/8 speed, which is very weak-sauce.  But I suppose it'll be an interesting design challenge, making something that's only sub-optimal as opposed to total hot flaming garbage.

Debuting in 3047 the 3M variant was one of the earlier full production run lostech upgraded designs produced by the Free Worlds League. Long hated by mechwarriors the Goliath was chosen for this very reason as a means to entice reluctant warriors to give the design another chance. Unfortunately despite the costly investments Corean Enterprises was unable to create the buzz that they wanted with the new variant. Meanwhile Brigadier Corporation continued with the older 1H variants until 3052 when they finally retooled their lines for their own unique take on the design. Keeping costs low and realizing established mechwarriors would not take to the design Brigadier instead markets their design more towards militias and other urban defense orientated units. Where the designs limited firing arcs aren't as much as a hindrance to the design. With increased accuracy inherent in the pulse laser technology, lower trained and green mechwarriors can keep up with elite and veteran aggressors. Slower speeds also allow for paved surfaces and keep the more stable 'Mech firmly planted on its feet.

A variant produced by General Motors on Kathil the 3D variant gives the Goliath that Federated Suns flair. Using mainly local produced and designed components the only similarity to the original Goliath is the old Nennison 40 Chassis. Stripping the traditional weaponry from the design the 3D is outfitted with a twin battery of General Motors Nova-5 class autocannons. Giving the 'Mech a solid punch at long ranges and unlike its predecessor it has a nice punch for closer ranges with a battery of Magna Mk II lasers and due to it limited mobility a Magna Mk I laser was added as a minor deterrent for opponents getting into its rear arc.

Goliath GOL-3S

Originally a unique variant piloted by one Hauptmann David Elhanan of the AFFC whose Goliath named the Flying Pig as he outfitted his 'Mech with 3 HildCo Model 12 Jump Jets to assist with the limited mobility of Quad designs. Often mocked and laughed at by superior officers it wasn't until the Hauptmann fought with a Jade Falcon Diashi one on one and with the mobility offered with the design was able to maneuver his 'Mech on the battlefield to achieve a victory. It was after this victory that he was able to replace his older Defiance Killer Type T AC/10s with the newer Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifles. He was forced to remove some of his secondary weapons systems from his original configuration but he was happy to make the change. It wasn't until later that Defiance Industries having discovered his unique variant approached him and his tech team for feedback that the megacorp put it into wide production for the AFFC.

Putting money where my mouth is.  Given the limitations of the quad, it needs to be either as mobile as possible, or designed purely as long-range fire support, preferably capable of indirect fire (sit hull-down behind a hill and just let other units TAG for it).  This is the former, and given the nature of the design (rare components in 3053, insanely high retail price), it makes the most sense as a Solaris VII arena design.  It's also half-decent on the battlefield, and superior to the 3M (which is admittedly a very low bar).

Type: Destrier GOL-4S7
Production: Solaris VII (OmniTech Industries)
Combat Value: 1921 BV
Total Cost: 22,301,249 C-Bills (including x1.8 tonnage premium)

Internal Struc (std): 8t
Engine: Hermes 400XL: 26.5t
  Walking: 5 (6)
  Running: 8 (9)
Heat Sinks: 11(22): 1t
Gyro/Cockpit (std): 7t
Armor Factor (std): 16.5t (263-max pips)

Head: 3/9
Center Torso: 25/31/19
R/L Torso: 17/21/13
R/L Front Leg: 17/34
R/L Back Leg: 17/34

Quirk: Multi-Trac, Exposed Actuators

2x PPCs (6cr, 14t) RT/LT
5x Spikes (5cr, 2.5t) RFL/RT/CT/LT/LFL
4x Medium Lasers (4cr, 4t) RT/LT/2CT-r
1x Small Laser (1cr, 0.5t) H
1x Triple-Strength Myomers (6cr) RFL/LFL/2RRL/2LRL

One of a number of successful Solaris VII design firms, OmniTech Industries had a good deal of success in the lighter-weight circuits with their Koto and Morpheus designs, but struggled to break into the Assault and Open-weight circuits as they scaled up their ‘Mech tonnages.

By 3053, the design firm had settled on one of two concepts: a short-ranged Frankenmech brawler with jumpjets, based off a Marauder II chassis married to a King Crab – dubbed the Colossus – and a faster-moving melee charge specialist that highlighted the Spike upgrades that had been so distinctive on the Morpheus.  It was this latter design, which utilized a Goliath chassis, that saw combat in the Solaris VII arenas starting in 3053 sectionals.

The redubbed “Destrier” was intended to be an all-around ‘Mech with both long-range options and bruising melee attacks.  It fitted a salvaged and rebuilt Hermes 400XL (from a Draconis-built Charger II CGR-3K) to a frame strung with Ares-Bergan brand Triple-Strength Myomer, giving the Destrier an eye-popping top speed of 96kph when the myomer is overheated.  Battlemech spikes – associated with OmniTech designs for several seasons — have been affixed to the forward torsos and forelegs of the ‘Mech, giving it modest protection and a ferocious charge or kick attack in combination with the advanced myomers.  Sixteen and a half tons of Valiant Lamellor provide maximal protection, and the graphic designers were able to shape the armored protection to rather notably resemble the equine monicker (in fact, in the 3060s this upgraded silhouette would be licensed and tweaked by Vicore Industries to produce the updated line of Goliath ‘Mechs)

The weapons load-out on the original Destrier is otherwise quite modest.  OmniTech retained the Corean Transband-29 comms system and Corean B-Tech targeting system capable of quickly marking and finding firing solutions for multiple opponents, even at different angles or range-bands; although not typical in arena combats, the system proved quite handy for retaining target locks even when making aggressive combat maneuvers such as melee charges.  A pair of Rand PPCs are the primary weapons, dorsal-mounted along the Destrier’s side torsos, giving the ‘Mech some impressive medium to long range punch.  Although OmniTech seriously considered the use of Large Pulse Lasers, given that the Destrier is intended to be a close-range brawler, they simply did not have the ability to acquire sufficient weapons to kit both the Destrier and their other assault design, the Colossus.

A mix of medium and small lasers round out the firepower of the Destrier, with two medium lasers rear-mounted to discourage flanking or ambushes.  The array of lasers allow a pilot to quickly overheat and engage the triple-strength myomers, can bracket-fire with the PPCs at closer ranges, and/or allow a trained pilot to maintain their heat levels (and myomer-enhanced speed) in various combinations.

Initial results in sectionals have proved to be quite promising, with the Destrier being a versatile combatant and crowd-pleaser.  Given the enormous expense sourcing and maintaining both the extra-light engine and the triple-strength myomers, however, OmniTech has very tight operating margins with the GOL-4S7.  And, what with the added expense of a completely different new assault prototype in the Colossus, Solaris VII analysts and outside observers are somewhat concerned at how little margin for error OmniTech faces.

A Berserker precursor – and that’s written into the fluff, below.  Again, speed is everything with a quad, and if fitted with the Inner Sphere large pulse laser, it needs to have more speed than that.  An assault ‘Mech with 5/10 speed is fun and friendly, and has a chance to get those pulse lasers in range.  It can also close and deliver a few nasty kicks in melee if it needs to, much like the 5/8 Charger and its only real combat utility back in the Succession Wars era.  Plus, arguably superior to the Goliath 3M, which is (again) a spectacularly low bar.

In 3053, Defiance Industries began production of an upgraded Goliath with relatively little fanfare.  In the context of the Federated Commonwealth’s frantic rebuild of the battered AFFC, the updated Goliath line seemed at first blush to make sense, but outside observers have noticed a number of oddities.

First, the Goliath quad chassis has a poor reputation, and Defiance did very little to change the key weaknesses of the design – it remains rather top-heavy, and retains the fragile leg actuators of the original 1H design (a major weakness if the ‘Mech is expected to face battle-armor forces like those of the Clans).  Although Defiance did appear to layer on additional armored protection to the legs, upgrading the fourteen and a half tons of armor carried by the Goliath to Durallex Special Heavy Ferro-Fibrous armor, the major change in the newly designated GOL-2S is a striking one: it utilizes a far more powerful engine, being fitted with an LTV 400-rated extra-light fusion engine, a design that Defiance appears to be newly capable of manufacturing on Hesperus II.

With the installation of the 400XL, this new Goliath has an impressive top speed of 85kph, made even faster by the installation of MASC technology in the right torso, and capable of hitting bursts of 106kph with the circuitry engaged.  The speed allows the assault design to close to the brawling ranges that would allow its twin torso-mounted Sutel Precision Line Large Pulse Lasers to be effective, although the ‘Mech still carries a pair of Holly-5 LRM launchers (along with a ton of ammunition) in a dorsal mount in the center torso for a modest amount of additional long-range firepower.

The new speedy Goliath is a very odd design choice for Defiance, which has historically specialized in lumbering assault juggernauts like the Atlas, or the more modestly mobile Zeus.  Although well-suited to be the bruiser and anchor in pursuit and striker lances, and even hunting mediums and lights that don’t expect its mobility, the price-tag on the new Goliath is prohibitive, in large part because of its pricey new extra-light engine combined with expensive Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry on a ‘Mech with an engine this size.  The most likely explanation is that Defiance is developing a new ‘Mech design that uses many of the same components, and simply decided to make the under-performing (and poorly selling) Goliath chassis as the testbed for many of those technologies.  The 400XL and MASC combination is an unusual one, and there are already rumors that Defiance is developing a heavy or assault variant of their signature Hatchetman, although more measured analysts believe that a more mobile Atlas variant seems more likely.

And here’s the “budget” version of the Goliath, a pure fire-support design.  I’d prefer to use massed LRM-5s, but there’s just not enough crit space for the necessary heat sinks to make that work, so  I’m going with the second most efficient LRM design, the LRM-15, instead.  This variant puts out the firepower of a Salamander, and between side-step and hull-down, can manage some battlefield shenanigans that should make it possible to keep even Clan 5/8 heavies to its front arc (= only arc) of fire.  As an added bonus, the four different LRM launchers play very nicely with the Multitrac quirk of the Goliath.

When Corean Enterprises of Steward upgraded the Goliath in 3047 with the 3M, Brigadier Corporation, the original designers of the Goliath and long-time manufacturer, felt they were now put on notice.  After reviewing the Corean upgrade, Brigadier engineers concluded that that 3M was a medicre ‘Mech, but still a clear upgrade over the much-maligned (and admittedly underperforming) Goliath 1H.  The onus was now on Brigadier to either upgrade their existing Goliath production line, or consider rebuilding it entirely to produce a superior and better-selling ‘Mech instead.

By 3050, having seen some successes already with their Griffin 3M and Crusader 5M upgrades, Brigadier decided to attempt an upgrade of their Goliath line – some discussion was made about focusing on the Scorpion lines first, but corporate executives decided that potential Scorpion sales would simply cannibalize their own Griffin manufacturing, as they were both medium-weight designs.  The company then focused the next two years on producing a viable and upgraded Goliath – right as the Clans invaded, and in an environment where the Combine and Commonwealth were desperate for more (and more cost-effective) ‘Mech designs.

Given the direction of the market, Brigadier chose to rework their Goliath and produce a highly cost-effective support-fire assault design, one capable of providing excellent firepower that would be effective against even Clan opponents, while still being affordable for cash-strapped Great Houses attempting to rapidly rebuild.  The redesignated GOL-2M saves considerable weight by downgrading its engine, rather than installing a pricely extra-light.  It is powered by a Pitban 240-class fusion engine, sourced from long-time corporate collaborator Nimakachi Fusion Products of Tematagi, who was delighted to find a buyer for their Pitban engines, as they had switched much of their own ‘Mech production from Spiders to Venoms (which utilizes a VOX 280XL engine instead).

With the Pitban, the 2M moves at a relative snail’s pace, with just 53kph top speed.  However, Brigadier designers have focused on creating a pure support-fire design, accepting the poor mobility as a necessary trade-off to make a cost-effect assault ‘Mech.  Instead of direct-fire weapons like a PPC or Gauss Rifle (such as fielded by their competitor), the Brigadier Goliath instead doubles down on the indirect fire of LRM launchers.  With their Crusader line already churning out Magna Longbow LRM-15 launchers, it was quite straight-forward to fit four of these LRM launchers into the torsos of the 2M, where it can lay down a withering volley of fire that surpasses that of nearly all other LRM-equipped ‘Mechs in the Inner Sphere.  The Corean B-Tech targeting system even allows pilots to easily split fire from the four launchers against multiple opponents.  Seven tons of CASE-protected ammunition, split between the left and right torsos, give the 2M reasonable endurance, and a pair of Intek Medium Lasers (also from their Crusader line) give the 2M some backup short-range punch – one fitted to the head, and one rear-firing in the center torso.

Finally, Brigadier added an additional two tons of StarSlab-3 ‘Mech armor to their Goliath, bulking up the armored protection on the four legs of the ‘Mech, as well as a modicum of extra protection to the side torsos.  Although still a tall ‘Mech, the revamped Goliath 2M is heavily armored, capable of providing half a lance’s worth of fire support all on its own, and in the hands of a good pilot capable of maximizing a quad ‘Mech’s unique quirks, capable of utilizing cover and maneuvering to maintain its range advantage as necessary.  Most importantly, the revamped design comes in under 8 million C-bills, dramatically less expensive than Corean’s somewhat lackluster “upgrade”, and helping Brigadier stay well positioned to keep growing its market share and expanding their ‘Mech offerings into the future.

A field variant utilized by the Magistry of Canopus and may be the precursor to the new swarm LRM philosophy overtaking the Free Worlds League. Dropping the speed and tonnage of its engine system down to the Pitban 240 the 2MoC variant doesn't need to be first to the party it just needs to be fast enough to get into range with its battery of Holly LRM 5s. With the ability to thrown down as many missiles in a volley as the old Longbow BattleMech, with a similar speed profile the design is more than likely heavily influenced by it. Unlike the Longbow this Goliath variant is able to incorporate some lostech technologies allowing for an improved secondary firepower complement. Centered around its Sunglow large laser it is able include direct fire long range support at times its supported by a singular Hotshot flamer in each leg allowing for nearly 360 coverage in short ranges and can be devastating to any infantry attempting to storm the 'Mech.

Sometimes supply meets demand, sometimes supply exceeds demand. The latter is the only reason the 3K variant of the Goliath exists. While ordering a shipment of Hermes 400 XL engines for their Charger line one unfortunate administrator put in for an order of 100 engines while the intent was only for 10 engines. This overproduction of a extremely expensive piece of equipment somehow slipped through the bean counters scrutiny. Three months later when yet another shipment of engines arrived at the facility it was finally discovered that there was a snafu in the ordering of parts. Utilizing them all for the Charger was the original thought but several engineers asked for permission to upgrade the small stockpile of Goliaths in the DCMS hands. While not very numerous many 'Mechs had been sitting in mothballs due to the lack of interested pilots. Refitting the weaponry with other on hand available parts and two months later, the 3K was born.

GOL-2M Goliath

Corean Enterprises on Stewart is producing the GOL-2M Goliath for the Free Worlds League Military.  The design was also supposed to be manufactured on Oliver by Brigadier Corporation, but the loss of that system to the Federated Commonwealth has resulted in a different model of Goliath serving in the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth.

The Marik variant features 14.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (for more than 98% of maximum armor protection on an 80-ton Quad chassis) and thirteen double-strength heat sinks.  The chassis and engine (Hermes 320 Standard Fusion Engine) remain the same as on the base GOL-1H.

The armament package has been completely reworked, with the main weapon being a Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Laser in the center torso.  While capable of dealing slightly less damage than the old model PPC used prior, it does possess a slightly superior range and lacks any problems engaging targets in close.  The missile launchers have been removed and replaced with six Holly LRM-5 launchers fed by four tons of ammunition (three launchers and two tons of ammunition in each of the right and left torsos).  The LRMs are most often NARC-homing warheads, relying on other members of the lance or company to tag the target with a homing beacon.  However, Thunder munitions are occasionally used as well.  The side torsos are both CASE protected as well, giving the MechWarrior assigned to a GOL-2M a greater chance of survival in the event of an ammunition detonation.

Both machine-guns have been removed and replaced by three Defiance Type 10P Small Pulse Lasers (one in the left torso and the remaining pair in the right torso, one positioned to fire towards the rear).

While 13 DHS cannot fully compensate for the heat generated, excess overheat production is relatively minor and should be easily handled by any skilled MechWarrior.
