For design contest twenty-eight we go to one of BattleTech’s most iconic ‘Mechs which has been unseen and now reseen again. The Griffin has always been there in my home campaigns in one form or another so I might call it a favorite but more accurately it is a staple. From guarding the Lyran throne room to regular mercenary service this war machine can be found almost everywhere in the InnerSphere so I expect a lot of different variations. I anxiously await your different entries to see what becomes of this ubiquitous BattleMech in the Salient Horizon setting. Thankfully the main boards seem to be back up and there is a Mech of the Week article link as well as a sarna link for you to draw inspiration from.

Design Criteria
Design: Griffin Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 55 tons
Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!
Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle

Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine
InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera

C3 Computer
Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.
Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday October 16th 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

My basic premise for all these will be the Inner Sphere learning quickly what having all your weapons on one side of your 'Mech does when fighting the Clans with Targeting Computers
A Comstar recreation from historical references of the Royal Griffin variant that served during the Star League. Understanding the basics of the design Comstar reached out to Kallon Industries for for acquiring the schematics of their 1DS variant which utilized many of the upgraded technologies. The exchange allowed Kallon access to a trained and knowledgeable pool of scientists and engineers which seem to used towards upgrading their production methods on Hesperus.
Outfitted with advanced technologies the 2NB variant while not having as a high of a survivability rate as the original design due to the inclusion of an XL engine the increased weapons output was seen as a must. Due to the large increase throughout the Innersphere in production of XL engines specifically the type and make as found on the 55 ton design costs have started to decrease as production surges.

Never their own the Draconis Combine and the Griffin 1DS never gained traction amongst the DCMS. Only utilizing the design due to the already costly expenditures upgrading the production facility by the Federated Suns allowed the Chancellor to invest in upgrading other longer loyal industries to the Combine. As time moved on though the design was seen as flawed. The Smoke Jaguar forces utilizing their advanced targeting computer were able to neutralize the designs quickly. Having failed in their initial upgrading of the Hunchback with Gauss technology Victory Industries attempted to incorporate the weaponry into their new 1DC variant. Replacing the Large Pulse with the Gauss while taking a significant tonnage dedication dramatically increased its range and damage potential. This caused the normal long range missiles to be removed and instead replaced with a shorter range missile system. To supplement these ammo dependent systems a single medium pulse laser as well a battery of medium lasers have been added to the design.

Griffin GRF-2TW
Taking the long standing gag about Lyrans and their assault 'Mech scout forces the engineers at the Talon Wernke production facility for Kallon Industries have taken the traditional Griffin design and turned it into one of the largest scout Battlemech in the Inner Sphere. Keeping costs low the team kept the traditional engine over the costlier and more vulnerable XL variants. Feeling that this would allow the designs to survival longer behind enemy lines and allowing the pilots to escape. The incorporation of the MASC systems allows the design to escape from heavier foes as well as hunt down lighter designs for ant scouting maneuvers. Removing the traditional missile support systems weaponry the design kept the design with an all energy battery of weaponry. Downgrading the traditional PPC for the lighter Large Laser for tonnage savings reasons. These tons were then able to be devoted towards the new Beagle Active Probe and Guardian ECM systems integrated into the design. Supported with Targeting Acquisition Gear and Remote Sensor buoys that the 'Mech can leave for continuous sensor coverage over large areas. With three medium lasers and a flamer for ant infantry and guerilla actions the design is a solid addition to the AFFC.

Reviewing the designs of the Federated Commonwealth during the so called Year of Peace the FC quartermasters and senior leadership came to a startlingly discovery. The iconic design of the Lyran Commonwealth Griffin had more than a double digit lead over all other medium weight 'Mechs in their forces in losses and downtime due to repairs. The seemingly pinpoint accuracy of certain Clan designs were able to target the vulnerable right side of the design specifically the Right Torsos. Which when lost removed all offensive weaponry of the design. With the rather lackluster approval by the AFFC forces towards the upgraded 1DS design, it was decided to rethink the design and come up with a better option.
Looking to give the design a facelift and some saying it was a way to blend the Lyran design with Davion flair the traditional PPC was replaced with the LB-10X 30mm autocannon, allowing for versatility with its multiple ammo types. Downgrading the Doombud 20 LRM system to its smaller 15 missile system but boosted with Artemis FCS for nearly identical missiles on target with most shots. Backed by twin medium lasers for additional short range damage and some weaponry in the cases where it depletes its main ammunition stores.

The GRF-1DS Griffin was thought by many of the pilots who drove it as something of a failure. Under-armored, under-gunned and over-sinked were just some of the words uttered by those lucky survivors of the Clan Invasion who made it back to Lyran worlds. One of the earliest and most wide spread fixes was initiated Hauptmann Lisa Kildare of the 23rd Arcturan Guards. Her company was assigned four of these Mechs and after seeing combat she thought it was best to expand the weapons loadout of the GRF-1DS. While at the Regimental Repair Depot, she had the techs replace the large pulse laser with a Cyclops XII ER large laser and a brace of Defiance B3M medium lasers. Additionally, she had the extraneous double heat sinks removed. With the weight savings she added a Cyclops Painter Artemis IV FCS system to the Doombud LRM20 launcher. Another ton of ammunition was added as well. Finally, another ton of armor was added to the Earthwerk chassis. While heat can be unmanageable with an alpha strike, Hauptmann Kildare discovered that she could dance her new Griffin around the edge of the battlefield with little heat build-up while jumping and firing both long-range weapons. Norse Battlemechs has seized upon her creation and is making preparations to begin production within the next year.

Seizing upon Hauptmann Kildare's refit of her GRF-1DS, Defiance engineers went a bit further than she did. Instead of the standard medium laser, the Defiance engineers mounted a pair of Defiance P5M medium pulse lasers. The LRM20 was downsized to Coventry Starfire LRM15 with an Artemis IV FCS with two tons of ammunition. Armor has been maxed out with the application of 10.5 tons of Lexington Ltd. High Grade ferro-fibrous armor thus increasing the survival of both pilot and machine.

Agreed 100 percent. I understand was the Soltic H8 Roundfacer so had to try and fit it into the BT universe weaponry wise, but could have done a much better job. Never understood the Lyran love affair either

I was specifically talking about the GRF-1DS, but I guess it applies to the original as well.

MRBC Review Volume 1 – 3052 – Outreach Press
Mercs and their toys
Who said that only big companies or the Successor States could innovate? In this new section, we are going to show you how mercenary units can make the best of what they have and sometimes find new solutions to old problems.
Today we will have a look at Griffin’s Pride, a heavy unit that after winning a straw of stunning victories on the fringes against raiders decided to upgrade their forces. Having at their core an understrength of Assault and Heavy ‘Mechs with a lance of vehicles, Major Sabine Griffin selected to go for more mobile designs and having completed several missions in the Free Worlds League opened her command to Marik ‘MechWarriors.
The first to come was a former member of the Dark Knights Cooperative that brought along his refitted Griffin, a special model made on the basis of a GRF-1N by Innovative Design Concepts, a Solaris VII design firm. The GRF-1N-S7 had been modified for fighting in the arenas with improved armour thanks to 9.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous Armour and the LRM-10 being replaced by 2 Harpoon-6 better suited to the close ranges fight of Solaris VII and that could be easily found on the market since it was the missile system of the Wolverine. To ensure its survivability, a CASE was added, allowing it to be more easily repaired should its ammo be destroyed.
Impressed by the idea but unsure if such a ‘Mech would suit the tactics of her units, Major Sabine Griffin got in touch with Innovative Design Concepts that agreed to produce several test units to see if something fit the wishes of the Griffin’s Pride.
The GRF-1N-GP1 was designed as a protective unit for the missile units used to lay minefields on the battlefield. Keeping the PPC and the Ferro-Fibrous of the S7 (even if the armour was slightly reduced), 2 Medium Lasers and 3 Streak SRM-2 were added, all courtesy of the Free Worlds League left-overs from their upgrade process of the Shadow Hawk.
The GP2 is a deep raider with 1 Large Laser (taken from stockpiles remaining after the WVR-6M had been upgraded) 4 Medium Lasers, 17 Heat Sinks and 9.5 tons of armour, it can stay on the battlefield nearly forever and thanks to its mobility, it can select its battles and focus on vulnerable ‘Mechs, launching counter-strikes when needed.
The final prototype, the GP3, is a variant over the traditional Griffin, focusing on long range firepower with 4 LRM-5, taken from left-overs after the upgrade of the Shadow Hawk and a Large Laser.
Griffin’s Pride put these 4 variants into a special Lance acting as a mobile reserve and the first fights have been promising (as some rogue mercenary units discovered), showing that they were really a force multiplier. Even if the unit had no intention of getting more of it, be it because of a lack of cash or a will to still focus on heavier designs, other Marik affiliated mercenary units or third rate Free Worlds League units and even Periphery units have been asking Innovative Design Concepts to upgrade their Griffins to one of these 4 variants as they are solid yet affordable, a quality of its own on these worlds..
Because of the “high†demand (high for a small company like IDC), IDC has been contemplating selling the concept to bigger companies already producing the Griffin in the Free Worlds League or in the Periphery.

The GRF-3ELH was originally designed at the request of the famed Eridani Light Horse. As mercenaries, the unit has to weight the cost of a mech versus it's capabilities. While looking to upgrade their many Griffins, the ELH found that both of the models produced by the Federated Commonwealth were too fragile and too expensive for them. The ELH procurement team approached Kallon Industries of Talon about developing a new model for the mercenary market. The new design would retain the older CoreTek engine, reducing the cost, while increasing the survivability of the mech. In an effort to free up mass for other improvements, the ELH specified use an Endo Steel chassis. While this required significant work, the company undertook it based on a market analysis they did for the new GRF-3ELH. It showed that based on the cost of the mech, they could expect to sell twice as many of the -3ELH as the GRF-1Ds model they were were currently producing.
While the original Griffin was designed as an assault and fire support unit, the ELH was looking for a mech that could fill the cavalry role. As such they specified a number of changes to the mech's weapon systems. The PPC and LRM launcher were removed and a completely new weapons array was mounted. The main gun of the GRF-3T is the BlazeFire Sweetshot ER Large Laser. The LRM launcher has been removed and replaced with 4 Federated SuperStreak Racks, These are all located in same drum housing that had been previously used for the LRM rack. The hope is that by retaining the silhouette of the GRF-1DS, opponents will not know which one they are fighting until it is too late. Rounding out the weapons are a Sutel Precision Line Medium Pulse Laser in the left torso and 2 Exostar Small Pulse Lasers on the left arm. The Magna Exostar SPLs are intended to give the Griffin a limited anti-infantry capability.
In addition to the extensive changes to the mech's weaponry, there were a number of changes made to the Griffin's cooling system and armor. Three heatsinks have been removed. While this reduces the cooling capacity, it is still more then adequate for all but the heaviest firing. The armor has been upgraded providing approximately 20% more protection. This comes from a combination of adding an additional ton of armor plating and switching to the more advanced Kallon Unity Weave Ferro-Fibrous armor that is used by the Jagermech. To protect the mech against ammunition explosions, the SRM rounds are protected by a CASE system.
The new Griffin performed very well during trials and the ELH has purchased the entire initial run. The AFFC and other mercenary units have shown interest in the new design and all of the mechs scheduled to be produced in the next 2 years have already been sold.

Following the introduction of the GRF-3ELH Kallon Industries found itself with a deluge of orders for the new mech. It also began to receive requests from a number of mercenary units, including the Illician Lancers and Lexington Combat Group, about building a model using the same chassis, but that retained the Griffin's role as a fire support and light assault unit.
Having seen the profitability of the GRF-3ELH, the company was eager to meet the requests of these units for an alternate model. The newly designated GRF-3Z shares the same chassis, armor, motive power and cooling systems as it cousin. The only differences are in the weapons arrangement. The old Johnston Parti-Cannon PPC of the GRF-1N has been replaced with a Johnston High Speed ER PPC. The Valiant Heavy CrossBow LRM launcher of the GRF-1N has been retained but features improved accuracy through the addition of an Artemis IV fire control system. For close in defense, an issue with the original Griffin, an Intek Medium Laser is mounted in the left torso. The armor and cooling system are unchanged from the GRF-3ELH.
While some consideration was give to adding 1-2 heatsinks at the expense of the medium laser and some armor, this was rejected because it would require major changes to the mech. Currently the GRF-3ELH and GRF-3Z share over 90% commonality. The biggest difference between the two mechs the removal of the power feeds for the Small Pulse Lasers and changes to the ammo feed system to support the LRM. Fortunately the smaller size of the LRM missiles has allowed the engineers to fit the reload feed tubes in the same amount of space as the GRF-3ELH uses for the SRM launchers. Adding 1 or 2 additional heatsinks, while sound like a simple modification would require numerous changes to the mech's torso. This would introduce a number of differences between the two models and reduce the manufacturing efficiency that are gained from having two mechs that share so many common components.

Manufacturer: Kallon Industries, Brigadier Corporation
Primary Factory: Talon (Kallon), Oliver (Brigadier)
Communications System: Neil 6000
Targeting and Tracking System: Octagon Tartrac, System C
Overview:
One of the most widely available 'Mechs in the Inner Sphere, the Griffin was being constructed on three worlds within the Federated Commonwealth by the time of the Clan Invasion and made up a sizeable percentage of their cavalry force.
In order to quickly refit their existing designs, the AFFS requested a simple upgrade package and Brigadier, eager to validate the investment in their restored factory, rushed the 2D model into readiness.
Capabilities:
The new Griffin refits the heatsinks and armour of the 'Mech with advanced materials, saving two tons of payload at no loss in protection and almost doubling the ability to handle heat.
With the Johnston High Speed ER PPC already in high demand, the availability of the Fusigon Longtooth from the FWL after the Outreach Conference, solved what seemed like a major logistical snarl. This is the primary weapon of the refitted Griffin.
Supporting the ER PPC is a LRM-15 augmented by artemis guidance. While it only has a single ton of ammunition, a full jumping alpha-strike impairs even the improved heatsinks and most mechwarriors reserve the missile launcher for optimal shots anyway, or cite the lack of CASE as a reason to empty the ammunition bins as quickly as possible.
Variants:
As their bid for a new construction Griffin, Brigadier have dug out the VOX 330 reactor used on their older SCP-1N Scorpion. Already working on an extra-light version for that design, they fitted it into the Griffin and moved the ammunition storage to the left of the redesigned torso, adding another ton of ammunition and the requested CASE. This variant also sports improved protection to the arms and rear.

Manufacturer: Defiance Industries
Primary Factory: Hesperus II
Communications System: HartfordCo COM 4000
Targeting and Tracking System: HartfordCo XKZ 1
Overview:
Not entirely pleased with the Griffin variants being developed on Oliver and Talon, Defiance Industries decided to leave the refit market to other corporations and focus on new-build Griffins, exploiting their unmatched production capabilities.
The GRF-2BLR was the result of collaboration with Red Devil Industries, struggling to diversify their resources given proximity to the Jade Falcon Occupation Zone. Using advanced technology for the integral systems has allowed the Griffin to mount armament of readily available weapon systems equivalent to a 'Mech thirty tons heavier - the BLR-1G Battlemaster from which its
designation is taken.
Capabilities:
Sporting essentially the same speed and mobility as other Griffins, the 'GriffinMaster' retains a PPC in the right arm, although it has switched from a Fusigon to a Donal that meshes better with the electronics (which are for simplicity's sake simply copied from the Battlemaster's).
The secondary armament does away with the LRM launcher for a SRM launcher on the opposite shoulder, upgraded with Artemis fire control and cellular storage for the missiles. The main battery at close range is six medium lasers, quite enough to shred lighter 'Mechs with a single volley.
Despite switching to double heatsinks, the GRF-2BLR is far from able to cope with an alpha strike. The PPC is usually used in hit and run attacks exploiting the jump-jets, switching to lasers and SRMs for point-blank brawling.
Deployment:
The first two Griffins to leave Hesperus II were sent directly to the Royal Guards, who have assigned them to the Archon's throne-room.

Very nice drakensis!!
-
The Griffin is perhaps one of my favorite 3025-era 'Mechs! Sure, it wasn't the most efficient, or best protected, or carried the heaviest armament, but there is just something about that 5/8/5 medium able to reach out and tag you at long range that I just LOVED.
So, for this contest, I am submitting a plethora of Griffins! I've tried to stay true to the spirit of the 'Mech, and I hope ya'll enjoy my take on the following eight (EIGHT!!) designs.
Now, onto the 'Mech at hand.
-
GRF-2D Griffin
The Davion version of the upgraded Griffin spared little expense. Kallon Industries used the latest in recovered technology, as well as combat reports from the Clan Occupation Zones, to rework the Griffin into a fast cavalry unit. At its heart, the new upgrade utilized a 330 Extra-Light Fusion engine to give this design the speed of the Phoenix Hawk . . . while a sixth jump jet was added to increase mobility. This new engine was obtained from the Brigadier Corporation production lines on Oliver (originally intended for their Scorpion upgrade), although Kallon is planning on constructing a new factory on Talon to build the engines closer to their production lines.
Kallon engineers also incorporated an Endo-Steel II chassis, allowing for enough weight savings to install CASE in the right torso for the long-range missile launcher's ammunition. The Delta Dart LRM-10 was upgraded to incorporated Artemis IV Fire Control Systems, while the original Fusigon PPC was replaced with a Johnston High Speed Extended-Range PPC.
Armor was increased to 11.5 tons of Starshield A, providing the new Griffin with exceptional protection for a 55-ton 'Mech, while 11 double-strength heat sinks eliminates most (but not all!) of the excess overheat production. Indeed, the GRF-2D utilize a running Alpha Strike (or a jumping Alpha Strike of 90 meters or less) and remain heat neutral.
With the final 1.5 tons remaining, the design team installed a Beagle Active Probe in the -2DA model. Intended for scout leaders, as well as lance and company commanders, the -2DA offers the MechWarrior piloting the 'Mech with exceptional sensor capability. The -2DB, on the other hand, replaces the Active Probe with a Guardian ECM Suite.
Impressed by the results of Kallon's engineering teams, Hanse Davion ordered full production in early 3053. Currently, the AFFS is assigning newly produced GRF-2Ds (of both makes) to the 1st Federated Suns Armored Cavalry and the Davion Light Guards. Both the Deneb Light Cavalry and Ceti Hussars have been informed that they are the next units that will receive these new Griffins, with other regiments not projected to see any in their ranks for at least the next five years.
Both the 1st FSAC and Davion Light Guards have been highly impressed by the new designs which are well suited for their fast cavalry strike tactics, although to date neither Griffin has so far engaged the Clans.

GRF-2K Griffin
House Kurita acquired a production line for the GRF-1N Griffin following the War of 3039 when it acquired Norse BattleMech Works on Marduk. Renamed Victory Industries by the Combine, this factory had yet to received any schematics for upgraded Griffins, giving the DCMS a free hand in designing their own 'Mech.
Always concerned about cost, the DCMS took a less agressive approach in their overhaul and redesign than House Davion. Retaining the 275 standard fusion engine, the GRF-2K has the same speed and maneuverability as the traditional GRF-1N. The Combine did incorporate Endo-Steel II internal structure and Ferro-Fibrous armor plating (10.0 tons), however, along with 11 double-strength heat sinks (despite the chronic shortage of such equipment in the DCMS!).
The Fusigon PPC was replaced with a standard Lord's Light PPC (not the extended range Lord's Light 2!) as the weapon was readily available throughout the Combine . . . and also because the engineers were concerned about excess overheat production (even with the 11 freezers mounted!).
The Delta Dart LRM launcher was removed and replaced with five (FIVE) Streak SRM-2 launchers fed by a ton of CASE-protected ammunition! The last remaining ton was used to install a C3 Slave Module in the head.
While capable of devastating damage at short-range, the outward appearance of the GRF-2K is virtually indistinguishable from the older GRF-1N model, making identifying the GRF-2K on the battlefield quite dicey for hostile MechWarriors. However, the design is outranged by virtually all modern Clan weapon systems, and MechWarriors assigned a GRF-2K find that they must use terrain (or urban combat environs) to mask their approach until they reach their own optimal engagement range.

GRF-2M Griffin
The Mark version showcases the new Free Worlds League obsession with the NARC Missile Beacon. However, it has also proven quite successful on the battlefield! Especially when used in conjunction with other Mark missile carriers!
Retaining the standard 275 fusion engine, the GRF-2M uses Endo-steel II and Ferro-Fibrous armor plating (9.5 tons), with CASE and ten double-strength heat sinks.
The main gun is a Fusigon Longtooth ER PPC, supported by two Delta Dart LRM-5 launchers, each fed by a ton of ammunition. But the FWLM also installed a NARC Missile Beacon fed by two tons of ammunition. While the design has to close to utilize the NARC homing beacons, its speed and maneuverability (and armor protection!) makes it far more likely to survive to get in close. At which point, the ample missile magazines should still contain several missile salvos . . . and other missile armed 'Mechs in the Marik force will throw their own LRMs and SRMs at any hostile target struck by a beacon.
Although the GRF-2M has not seen combat against the Clans, it has proven very capable against Steiner and Liao forces and promises to be a mainstay of the FWLM for decades to come.

GRF-2S Griffin
House Steiner was not concerned with cost when it requested an upgraded Griffin. Instead, they demanded a dramatic increase in firepower. Using a 275 Extra-Light fusion engine and 10.0 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor plating, along with ten double strength heat sinks, the design team at Defiance Industries managed to increase firepower by 50%.
The Fusigon PPC was replaced with a Defiance 1001 Extended-Range PPC, increasing engagement range and eliminating minimum range problems. The Delta Dart LRM-10 launcher was retained, but Artemis IV FCS was added for the two tons of ammunition. And then the engineers added a second Delta Dart launcher (and two more tons of ammunition) in the left torso! However, there simply was not ample room to install CASE, so a MechWarrior must keep a watchful eye on any potential magazine breaches!
While running quite hot, the GRF-2S can project devastating firepower at long-range and maintains the speed and maneuverability of the GRF-1N. In fact, as the design team pointed out to the LCAF, excess overheat production is virtually the same as that of the older Griffin.
In addition to production on Hesperus II by Defiance Industries, the LCAF has recently retooled the Brigadier Corporation factory on Oliver to produce additional GRF-2S Griffins (as the demand has been quite high). Although slower than most Clan medium-weight designs, these new Grffins have proven to possess enough firepower that it is possible to engage some Clan medium-weight designs on a 1-on-1 basis and have the Lyran MechWarrior a chance at winning the engagement.

GRF-2T Griffin
Produced by Vandenberg Military Industries on Illiushin, the Griffin was a prime candidate for upgraded technology. However, the Taurian Concordat was (understandably) cautious in their approach.
The standard 275 fusion engine was retained, along with the Earthwerks GRF internal structure. However, the Starshield A standard armor was replaced with 10.0 tons of Starshield A/F Ferro-Fibrous armor plating and CASE was installed in both torsos. The twelve single heat sinks were also replaced with ten double-strength freezers.
The Fusigon PPC was kept, but the Delta Dart LRM-10 launcher was replaced with two smaller Delta Dart LRM-5 launchers (each fed by a ton of ammunition).
Having 1.5 tons remaining, the TDF authorized the installation of a pair of Voelkers 200 Machine-Guns in the left arm, fed by a ton of ammunition, giving the Concordat's new Griffins some much needed anti-personnel capabilities.
Two variants were also proposed and authorized for production.
The GRF-2T-2 replaces both Delta Dart launchers with Shannon Fore SRM-4 launchers (and two tons of ammunition). Although hotter running than the -2T-1, the excess overheat production is minimal and quite effective at short and medium range.
The GRF-2T-3 retains one Delta Dart (and a ton of ammunition) but replaces the second with a Shannon Fore SRM-4 launcher (and a ton of ammunition). Perfectly heat neutral even on a jumping Alpha Strike, the -2T-3 offers the TDF a balanced blend of long-, medium-, and short-range capabilities (as well as AP capabilities) on a robust and fairly maneuverable platform.
Currently VMI is overwhelmed by orders from the TDF and mercenary commands for the new war-machine and is working to expand their production capacity on Illiushin and has proposed constructing a new Griffin production line on New Vandenberg itself!

Whew! I did mention that liked Griffins, right? ;)
Anyway, that is my entries to this contest. Hope ya'll enjoyed them and perhaps you will use one or two (or six or eight!) in your own games.
Good night. And good luck.
-
Wow, that was a Griffin-gasm!
Going to be reviewing this one for a while I see. Maybe a will streamline my process from here on out.
-
I've got three or four more that need fluff. It's nice to see a Mech that is not unique to one faction and with the Shadow Hawk and Wolverine coming in the future we should see a plethora of designs.
-
Whew! I did mention that liked Griffins, right? ;)
I bow to you. 8)
-
Looking forward to your four Abele!
Yeah these Mechs should be pretty diverse in make up
-
Well basic fluff done for 3 of my 5. I know the one is going to be a Marik design got to figure out fluff for the Gauss one. If anyone wants to use it go for it. I'll try to finish these otherwise tomorrow
-
Today is the final day for entries folks so get those Griffins done!
-
Note: This fluff will suck as I am writing it while I'm angry
The first innovations coming from the Helm Core reached the realms of the periphery much later than it reached the realms of the Great Houses. The first to reach the Taurian Concordat in the mid-3040s and, initially, was limited to double heat sinks and CASE. Even with this limited technological information, one engineering team saw some promise in it and thus the GRF-2T Griffin was born. Seeing to mount even more weapons on the GRF chassis the team decided to replace the Core Tek 275 engine with Warner 220N borrowed from the Seydlitz aerospace fighter. This move freed up 7.5 tons of weight after replacing the 12 single heat sinks with 10 double heat sinks. To fix balance problems with gyro's software package the Donal PPC was moved to the left arm. A Delta Dart LRM15 launcher replaces the smaller Holly LRM10. Two Omicron 3000 medium lasers take up the space vacated by moving the PPC to the left arm. For added support two LFN Lindblad machine guns are mounted in the center torso. For additional protection this new general purpose Griffin now has eleven tons of standard. CASE has been added to the left torso.
All weapons are of local manufacture making repairs and logistics simpler. Marshal Cham Kithrong requested a number of these Griffins when word reached him at his VI Corps headquarters. Even though they are slower than the GRF-1N Griffin, many proponents believe that it is more durable and tactically flexible.

Once more technology became available through trade and intelligence efforts, the GRF-3T came into being. The most expensive piece is the 275 XL which was acquired through sources in the Free Worlds League along with the technology to build pulse lasers. In a move to follow the tend set by the GRF-2T, the engineers sought to take the Griffin of long range fire support to that of a trooper 'Mech. The first step was to replace the PPC with the newly designed Thunderbolt-12 large pulse laser. This new weapon is meant to cover the short-range gap of the LRM10. In keeping with the design changes made by the GRF-2T, the pulser is mounted in the left arm while the two medium lasers remain in the arm. The two machine guns have been moved from the center torso to the left torso. A Hotshot flamer is now mounted in the center torso. Armor protection is provided by ten tons of ferro-fibrous armor.

Overview:
One of the first designs to fi ll the void between the
massive Mackie and the smaller recon ’Mechs, the Griffin
was considered an advanced design for the time. With the
mobility of a recon unit and the fi repower and armor of a
heavy ’Mech, Earthwerks’ creation reigned supreme on the
battlefi eld for a brief period. Then everything else caught
up, leaving the Griffin filling the role of a mobile fire-support
unit.
Capabilities:
Fast and equipped with substantial long-range striking
power, the Griffi n is a favorite of pilots and commanders.
With two tons of ammo for the missile launcher and
almost ten tons of armor, the Griffi n has staying power
as long as the pilot watches heat levels. The only notable
weaknesses the ’Mech possesses are the lack of shortranged
weapons and the concentration of weaponry on
the right side.
A Lyran Griffin and Black Knight battled a Davion
Grasshopper and Trebuchet on New Earth in the Second
Succession War over a cache of Stingrays. With the Griffin
providing fire support, the Knight closed but collapsed
after inflicting massive damage. When a well-placed
PPC shot detonated the Trebuchet’s ammunition, the
combat became a duel between two abused ’Mechs.
Damage to the ’Mechs’ legs limited their mobility, and
both kept collapsing. The Griffin finally backed off and
used its PPC to finish the crippled Grasshopper. After the
battle, the exhausted MechWarriors found their efforts
were moot—a treaty hammered out by diplomats gave
the fighters back to the Free Worlds League.
Deployment:
Any major military will have Griffi ns on their roster.
The Capellan Confederation is the only great House not
manufacturing the design, but they are able to purchase a
limited number from the Taurian Concordat.
Variants:
The only production variant is made on Hesperus II
by Defiance Industries. The GRN-1S downgrades the PPC
to a large laser and the LRM-10 rack to a five-tube rack
but adds a pair of medium lasers and four additional
heat sinks. This has turned the Griffin from a long-range
support ’Mech into a medium-range brawler.
Notable 'Mechs & MechWarriors:
MechWarrior “Dropkick†Darvin Webster: A member
of Winfield’s Brigade, “Dropkick†is well known for using
his Griffin, “Hopalong†to get in close against opponents.
Shocked by his presence, they aren’t ready for
his version of death from above, the jump-kick. Though
this has left Hopalong battered, his opponents take the
brunt of the damage.
MechWarrior Elle Bennett: A new recruit from Sanglamore,
Elle performed admirably as the Fifth Donegal Guards drove
into the Draconis Combine during the War of 3039. On Alrakis,
Combine forces weren’t ready for “Sparky,†her Griffi n
modifi ed to replace the launcher with fi ve medium lasers,
armor, and another heat sink. On Alrakis, Elle would trade fi re
with Shadow Hawks and Dragons before closing on them. At
short range, they found themselves outmatched by Elle and
Sparky but unable to escape. Elle racked up eight kills this
way, leaving a laser-cut “E†in each victim’s fallen ’Mech.

Couldn't get to sleep as I'm stressing, so here's my Kuritan model.
Victory BattleMechs decided that the soldiers of the DCMS needed a Griffin that was wholly of Combine origin and not a foreign design captured when Marduk was taken from the Federated Suns. Using the GRF-1DS chassis and 275XL engine as the basis for the design, it was decided to replace the LRM-20 with a pair of Artemis IV FCS-equipped LRM-10s with tow tons of ammunition for each launcher in CASE protected bins. A quintet of medium lasers, four standard and one pulse, provide the extra firepower to counter Clan battle armor. An extra ton of armor has been added along with a C3 slave unit for better unit cohesion.
Some mechwarriors have expressed concern over losing the ER PPC, but most have learned to adapt to the new layout and the ability to 'spam' the enemy with missile barrages of greater accuracy.

Great to see your fluffed entries Abele!
Did anyone try their hand at a ComStar Griffin or tell a story about how it drove off the 503rd? ;)
A little more than eight hours to go before another contest bites the dust.

Well, this review listing took a long time because of the twenty-eight entries from six different designers I had to review. Add to that the number of Griffin production facilities in the InnerSphere (six) and there was a lot of room for possible winners. All the entries except one qualified for the review and the quality of the designs I have to say was very impressive. So, here is the listing without further delay with some comments to follow.

First off let me say that if Abele’s GRF-4M qualified for the contest it would have stood a good chance against masterarminas’ GRF-2M for the Marik slot. Both designs were very well suited to the Free Worlds League at this time and the competition would have been razor tight. I really loved Griffin’s Pride by Ice Hellion (requesting more details on these mercs) and their designs but they seem too unique to be official models. So, they will be joining Salient Horizons along with their group but as one of custom designs. I had to pick one of the mercenary designs to be the winner and ultimately that was Irose’s GRF-3ELH. Figure for the overall universe I will simply combine the stories and have these merc builds made on Solaris. In order to meet demand Kallon will license out limited production rights to Innovative Design Concepts. Bradshaw’s GRF-2NB will officially become the GRF-2CS as will his GRF-2TW become the GRF-3D made on Talon. Same with drakensis’ GRF-3D which will be known as the GRF-3DS made on Oliver along with his fantastic GRF-BLR ‘GriffinMaster’ which will be the GRF-3S made on Hesperus II. That Medium Mech with the firepower of an Assault very nearly won the whole contest but was ultimately defeated by the can’t miss GRF-2K by masterarminas. Congratulations! This challenge had nearly everything for me. Great contest, super competitive, and hard to judge. Awesome job everybody!!
