As some of you have already guessed contest number twenty is for the Hatchetman which is truly a revolutionary design. Not only the first new BattleMech designed by the Great Houses since the early days of the Succession Wars but one that ushered in a deadly new weapon. The Hatchet was the first ever dedicated melee weapon developed for a ‘Mech which says a lot about their previous role. While some ‘Mech combat before may have been improvised in this fashion now it was firmly entrenched in the physical arena. This was one of my favorites and I am looking forward to seeing what our designers can do with the Hatchetman for the Salient Horizon setting. This time around we do have a Mech of the Week Article on CBT for the Hatchetman and of course there is always BattleTechWiki!

Role. This BattleMech is a close-range urban combat master thanks to its mobility and trademark hatchet.
Factories. 4
Defiance Industries (Hesperus II) - production of this BattleMech began here in 3023
Johnston Industries (New Syrtis) – in 3049 production began here to help meet demand
Independence Weaponry (Quentin) – following the War of 3039 the Combine created their own
Taurus Territorial Industries (Taurus) – reverse engineered and began production in 3054
Design Criteria

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Design Traits of this Setting
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy.
Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.
Deployment
The Hatchetman was one of the first examples of cooperation between the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth. As such it quickly became a symbol of their new united realm and continues to be a mainstay for the massive Federated Commonwealth. With two factories churning out new models the AFFC and certain mercenaries in its employ will likely continue to be the single largest users of this BattleMech for years to come.
While the Draconis Combine captured many examples and successfully reverse engineered the BattleMech its warriors had little enthusiasm for it. Largely because of its association with the Federated Commonwealth and the inelegance of the Hatchet as a weapon. So, in canon production was halted which could perhaps change in the Salient Horizon setting especially with a good story as I feel there are many opportunities to do so this time around.
Finally, the newest producer of the Hatchetman are the Taurians which we have many fans around here so I expect to see a few variations. My advice to you is just remember to keep it decidedly low-tech but improvements can certainly be made to the original 3F in my opinion.
Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday June 19th, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

Overview:
The HCT-3F Hatchetman was the first truly innovative BattleMech design introduced in centuries. Not only did it feature a completely new weapon dedicated to melee combat, the Hatchet, but the full head-ejection system was quite frankly revolutionary. Twenty-six years later the first lostech refit of this BattleMech dubbed the HCT-5S debuted just before the Clan Invasion. While this upgrade proved effective against Clan Elementals it was vastly outmatched by Clan OmniMechs especially when fighting in open terrain. Also, Clan warriors tended to single the Hatchetman out for additional punishment because of its very physical nature which they considered an anathema. This gave FedCom designers who had already been tasked with improving the ‘Mech extra motivation.
Capabilities:
Considered slow for even an InnerSphere Medium BattleMech, designers focused in on improving the Hatchetman’s speed which would help it close more quickly with any threats and eliminate them. To that end they utilized the new General Motors 270 XL Engine which was in development for another project to boost its overall movement. Now capable of ninety-seven kilometers per hour this jump in acceleration also allowed them to add two additional Luxor 2/Q Jump Jets for greater mobility. In order to make room for these additions its armament was reengineered with a lighter energy arsenal which included a Defiance 1001 ER PPC and four Defiance B3M Medium Lasers. This would allow the Hatchetman to stay it the field longer even while its ten Double Heat Sinks were overtaxed to take advantage of its most radical addition. A Triple Strength Myomer was included further boosting max speed to nearly one hundred and twenty kilometers per hour. This highly advanced musculature also doubled the impact of its Hatchet making its trademark cleaving attacks even more deadly. Finally, a Guardian ECM Suite was added to enhance the design’s ambush attacks within an urban environment. These countermeasures promised to knock down certain high-tech targeting devices the Clans often used in combat. Other than that several components like the Chariot Type II chassis, the eight and a half tons of Durallex Super Medium Ferro-Fibrous, and TharHes electronic systems remained wholly unaltered allowing for refits of existing models.
Deployment:
Defiance took great pains in testing their redesign even going as so far to test it in the arenas of Solaris VII prior to full scale production. While the new Hatchetman had mixed results with the gladiators there the AFFC was convinced of its superior capabilities. Orders were placed for several FedCom units despite the models high price which is seen as some as a big drawback. Despite this many elite commands are anxiously awaiting the new variant in their ranks and a chance to use it.

The Hatchetman has been designated as one of the high priority designs for the AFFC. As a result it was one of the first mechs to be upgraded with advanced technologies recovered from the Helm Memory Core. In a rush to deploy new the new technologies upgrades were introduced that were in some cases suboptimal. There were many reasons why this happened, but in most cases it boiled down to either the design teams not realizing the capabilities and limitations of the new technologies or a push to use readily available technologies, rather then waiting for some that would take longer to implement. The HCT-5S fell into the latter category. The design team debated different ways they could save weight in order to improve the weapons and armor of the HCT-3F. After analyzing several different options, the design choices came down to the Model 87 that used an XL engine and the Model 90 that used an Endo-Steel frame. Ultimately they decided to put the Model 87 into production as the HCT-5S. The main reason for this decision was simply that the mech could be put into production in 6 months, the Endo-Steel frame for the Model 90 was proving difficult to mass produce. This was due to the need for a new orbital foundry to produce Endo-Steel, which needs to be manufactured in a zero gravity environment.
As reports came back from the field, there were several complaints from Mechwarriors assigned to the new HCT-5S. While they appreciated the additional armor and fire power of the mech, they had 2 major complaints. One is that the XL engine is prone to damage, several Hatchetmen were lost when their side torsos were penetrated, destroying the engine. The other complaint was the limited ammo for the Hatchetman's main gun. This was felt to be insufficient for extended deployments.
Responding to these complaints, the designers at Defiance Industries went back to the drawing board and revisited the discarded Model 90. By this time they now had sufficient production capacity that the Endo-Steel frame was not a problem. By switching to an Endo Steel frame, they could use the old GM 180 engine of the HCT -3F, reducing the mech's vulnerabilty. The space freed up by changing the engine allowed the designers to add a second ton of autocannon ammo.
Other changes were made to the secondary weaponry. The designers removed the right arm laser, as it was mounted on the same arm as the Hatchet it was rarely used in combat. The left arm laser was switched back to the older Defiance B3M model, some mechwarriors felt the shorter range of the pulse laser was a hinderance, even on a mech designed for physical combat. By switching the arm mounted laser to a standard model and the keeping the torso mounted one as a pulse laser the designers felt that they had come up with a compromise that would satisfy most mechwarriors.
The final change involved the armor. In order to make space in the Hatchetman's slender chassis for the Endo-Steel frame they were forced to revert to the older Durallex Medium armor. However, they were able to mount an additional half ton of armor, providing the HCT-6S with almost the same protection as the HCT-5S.

The HCT-4S has utilized advanced technologies to realize the original Lyran prototype, the HCT-2B. The design of the Hatchetman actually predates the Federated Commonwealth Accords. Development started in 3019 at Defiance Industries. The design team soon ran into a number of issues, the most difficult of which revolved around the main gun of the Hatchetman, the massive Defiance Mech Hunter Autocannon. It was only after the FedCom Accords that real progress was made on the Hatchetman. Dr Banzai and the engineers at the NAIS were asked to look at the design and make suggestions. It was Dr. Banzai who contributed not only the novel full head ejection system, but he was also responsible for convincing the Lyran engineers that bigger is not always better. It was his advice that led to the choice of the Defiance Killer Autocannon as the main gun of the Hatchetman. The final design proved to be a great success and was deployed in large numbers.
Even so the Lyran engineers still longed to produce a variant with the Defiance Mech Hunter autocannon. It was not until the unlocking of the Helm Memory Core that they were finally able to implement their ideas. Starting with the an HCT-5S Hatchetman with all of the weapons other then the Hatchet removed, the design team mounted a Defiance Mech Killer Autocannon in the torso. The massive size of the weapon, combined with the bulky extra light engine forced them to relocate the CASE protected ammo bins to the left torso of the mech. For secondary weaponry they mounted a pair of medium laser, similar to the HCT-3F. One was mounted in the left arm and the other was mounted in the left torso.
Due to the high heat output of the large autocannon the designers upgraded the mech's cooling system, using freezers to double it's heat dissipation capacity. Finally the mech carries 8 and half tons of Durallex Medium armor. Due to the bulky size of the Autocannon, Fusion Engine and Heatsinks they could not fit Ferro-Fibrous armor on the mech's slender chassis. As a result the HCT-4S is not as well protected as the -5S model.

Following the 4th Succession War the Taurian Concordat acquired several Hatchetmen when several companies of Richard's Panzer Brigade left the unit and headed to the Taurian Concordat. Realizing the value of the mech, the Concordat began reverse engineering the design in an effort to put the mech into production. This effort was delayed in part due to efforts by the Taurian engineers to develop an improved version of the mech. The main change revolved around the mech's big gun, the Defiance Killer Autocannon. It was suggested that the mech could switch to a large laser. This would not only remove any ammo dependance from the mech, but it would free up tonnage that could be used to improve the armor of the Hatchetman. Unfortunately efforts to reverse engineer the Hatchetman, while at the same time redesigning it, greatly slowed the program. It was not until the late 304s that everything seemed to becoming to fruition, when the sudden availability of double strength heat sinks lead to another delay. The new Hatchetman has finally begun to come of the production line at Taurus Territorial Industries.
The HCT-4T removes the Defiance Autocannon and replaces it with the Sunglow Type Two Laser. Both weapons have similar range, but while the Sunglow laser has slightly less armor penetration capability then the autocannon, it does not depend on ammunition and weighs considerably less. Of course the Sunglow generates more heat then the Autocannon which is why the original prototype of the HCT-4T mounted a large number of heatsinks.
The availability of the double heatsinks allowed the designers to remove 5 heatsinks in favor of additional weapons, while still maintaining sufficient cooing. The HCT-4T mounts 5 Diverse Optics Medium Laser, one of which covers the rear of the mech. This provides the mech heavy firepower as it gets into position to use it's powerful hatchet. The rear mounted laser provides additional protection in an urban environment. Because of the threat that infantry and vehicles pose in an urban setting, the Hatchetman carries 2 Hotshot Flamers, 1 firing to the front and one to the rear. Of limited use against other mechs, they are deadly to infantry.
The designers also greatly increased the armor of the Hatchetman. The HCT-4T mounts almost 50% more armor then the HCT-3F. This allows the mech to take heavy beating on the battlefield and continue to fight. During field trials the HCT-4T proved to be very durable, surviving damage that would have destroyed other mechs. It quickly drew comparisons to the Grasshopper, which is also known for surviving massive damage due to it's heavy armor and lack of ammo based weapons.

I'm with Grayson Carlyle - can this thing remove the hatchet?
*Edit - Unless there's been errata, active TSM adjusts the Walk speed BY 2! Not one. By these rules, that makes it 8/12, and an 18-pt hit.
Hmm.

From the fighting pits of Solaris 7 come the Hatchetmen of the Mad Hatters Combat Team. The Mad Hatters are made up of four former officers of the 8th Lyran Regulars and another from the the 10th Lyran Regulars.
First is the Hatchetman of the team's captain, Gustav Maurus. A new 225 XL engine replaces the old GM180 and the auto-cannon is removed and replaced with a mix of nine lasers and a token Streak SRM2 launchers. There are ten double heats sinks that cannot handle the full load of the lasers, but that is not a problem as this Hatcheman is also equpped with triple strength myomers. Excellent at short range combat, it needs the help of its lancemates to move in close to deliver its onslaught.

The third new variant is piloted by Tuomas Bender and is fairly close to the original Hatchetman as it retains the auto-cannon unlike the rest of the team's Hatchetmen. It now uses an XL version of the GM180 which allows for the addition of more armor and an extra medium laser. The ammo is moved to the CASE protected left torso while two jupj ets are moved from the legs to the center torso.

The fourth variant is piloted by the former 10th Lyran Regulars, Arabella Haldane. She has replaced the hatchet with a pair of retractable blades.** Out side of the Mech is known for her skills with various types swords and blades. She is rarely seen without some sort of blade on her person. Another user of the the 225 XL engine. it allows for the fifth jump jet and the large pulse and pair of medium pulsers that rpelace the auto-cannon. The two standard mediums have also been retained. With arenas with greater space, Arabella uses a standard PPC in place of the large pulse laser.

The last is the hatchet-less variant belonging to Werner Böhringer, formerly of the 8th Lyrans. After replacing the engine, he subbed in a pair of SRM6 launchers to replace the loss of the hatchet and the auto-cannon. Limited to short-range combat, which is a plus in many Solaris 7 arenas, Werner has to make use of manuever and cover to get close enough to an enemy. As compliments to the twin launchers, Werner mounts a pair each of medium pulsers and stanrd medium and small lasers.

All five of the above Solaris 7-based Mechs have led to the development of the newest version of the Hatchetman proposed by Defiance Industries, HCT-S7. It mounts the Binary Laser Cannon in place of the old auto-cannon and retains the hatchet in the right arm. The two standard medium lasers are retained while a small pulse laer has also been added. Defiance Industries also retained the TSM that several of the Mad Hatters use. An LRM5 has been added to give the Hatchetman some reach. 8.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor give this new Hatchetman an excellent protection.

* - the Mace is illegal by the rules of the contest as it does not make its official appearance until 3061, but I wanted to add some spice to the contest.
** - according to the fluff in SSW, these debuted in 2420 and thus are legal in my opinion.
Author's Note: I don't expect the Mad Hatter S7 mechs to get a chance in this contest as they are unique custom designed to fight in a particular place.

Here's another one. This is a Davion variant is designed by Johnston Industries on Addicks. It removes the jump jets and uses the same powerplant as the new Phoenix Hawks that are rolling off assembly lines across the Inner Sphere. It mounts an ER large laser in place of the AC/10. It retains the hatchet and the two standard medium lasers and supplements them with a trio of pulse lasers and a machinegun. Heat levels can get high, but are easily disspated when the triple strength myomers are activated. A well trained pilot will only use the TSM when necessary and will practice heat discipline in the mean time.

The next three were developed by the Taurian Concordat with assistance from engineers from the Shengli Arms company in the Capellan Confederation. The first Taurian variant and the Capellan version both share an Artemis IV-equipped LRM15 launcher. The first Taurian mounts a pair of medium pulse lasers and a small pulse laser in place of the standard mediums. The Capellan version retains the standard medium placers and adds a Guardian ECM suite and flamer while carrying an extra half ton of armor.
The second Taurian variant uses a standard PPC in place of the LRM launcher while adding a pair of Streak SRM2 launchers to its arsenal. The two standard medium lasers are kept and backed up by a medium pulse laser. Seven tons of a ferro-fibrous armor mounted on both Taurian version while the Capellans carries 7.5 tons.

Hatchetman HCT-4X
Overview
The return of the Clans in 3050 saw the High Command of the AFFC despairing of matching Clan technology in the field, where the lighter, more powerful, and longer-ranged weapons forced commanders to search desperately for strategies and tactics to slow the juggernaut of Clan Jade Falcon. Among these were the clear advantages of limiting line-of-sight, through weather, terrain, or obscurants, such as smoke from natural fires or specialty ammunition. It was in this way the Hatchetman, designed at the founding of the Federated Commonwealth, became one of the specialty units most in demand to defend it in late 3052.
Capabilities
Taking a page from the Clans who used their technological prowess to reserve as much payload as possible for their advanced weapons, engineers at Coventry Metal Works used the same formula to significantly upgrade the mobility, armor protection, and weaponry of the Hatchetman-4X with the newly re-discovered technology sweeping the Inner Sphere to fight in these confined areas.
Beginning at the core with the Endo-Steel skeleton and General Motors 270 XL where the -4X found most of its weight savings, the -4X continued to exploit the technical advantages available to the Inner Sphere with assistance from an unlikely source; the Capellan Confederation.
Extensive diplomatic efforts to gain the Triple-Strength Myomer technology from House Liao failed as the designers worked at a feverish pitch to put the -4X into protection, leading to its current weapons configuration, although with the assistance of the St. Ives Compact the first production models were retro-fitted with the technology. Forced to manually control the (x2)HS, a more refined model was eventually put into production, the -4X-A.
Removing four of these heat sinks from the cooling loop brought the TSM to active status, increasing the ‘Mech’s top speed to over 120 kph without the dangerous MASC system, allowing it an advantage against many of the Medium ‘Mechs it faced despite the standard laser weaponry it carried. Equipped with the Guardian ECM System to help it conceal itself and allied units, the -4X was considered extremely expensive, but probably worth it if the right circumstances could be arranged.

As engineers fiddled with heat dissipation to reduce strain on the Mechwarrior, the more flexible -4X-A was put into production. Able to reach activation level of the TSM with only it’s JJs and ER-LgL, it could easily maintain it either running or Jumping or defend itself from enemy Elementals seeking to ambush it in retaliation.

The -4X-B retained the E-S IS, XL engine, and (x3) Myomers, but exchanged the design’s namesake weapon for a LRM-5 and a single ton of ammunition, designed to use FASCAM ammunition within the confines of an urban battlefield to channel attackers into ambush range.

Wow, look at all those Hatchetmen!!!
Nice job Irose, Abele, and Red Pins.
As far as I know Triple Strength Myomer boosts Walking MP by 1 and correspondingly the Running MP. I suppose it is possible that has been changed like the MASC rules over time though. Love to hear why.

Wow, I am old!
In universe i might say this is an improvement made after 3067.
-
Could say earlier, you don't really see any canon designs with TSM until TRO 3055 with Berserker which used a MASC but now with the change of rule, Id say TSM is much better option. Would go 6/9 instead of 4(8)/6
-
No doubt about the Berserker being better with a TSM than a MASC period. That decision made literally no sense. You really don't see any canon designs with a TSM until much later. Perhaps it was too gimmicky but a +2 is certainly better than a +1. The MASC also got a lot better too with rule changes.

Did anyone request a Taurian upgrade?
Overview
When a group of mercenaries came to the Taurian Concordat, carrying with them their HCT-3F Hatchetman, they initiated a paranoiac search in Defiance Industries, looking to find out who had leaked the plans of the “new†‘Mech to the Taurians.
Willing to play upon this, Protector Thomas Calderon ordered Taurian Territorial Industries to reverse-engineer the ‘Mech to add it to their production. For different reasons (among them a lack of money available for this project.), it took more time than expected and it is by now (3052) still not finished.
Unwilling to face the wrath of the Protector, Taurian Territorial Industries found a solution: upgrade the 3F to the modern battlefield. This is how the HCT-4T came into being
Capabilities
More an evolution than a revolution, the HCT-4T kept what makes the strengths of the Hatchetman while improving on it.
The starting point was the upgrade of the armour thanks to the use of Durallex Light Ferro-Fibrous rediscovered for the Maultier. The weight was also increased by one ton thanks to the replacement of the original 11 simple ones by 10 Double Heat Sinks (insuring a market for Taurian Territorial Industries as this change can’t be made without some assistance), improving the protection by almost 30%.
The 2 Medium Lasers were kept as they were reliable and efficient but where both moved to the Left Arm to avoid losing some firepower when the Hatchet comes into play.
However the main gun was deemed too weak and replaced by a PPC produced by Sterope Industries for the Warhammer and a Large Pulse Laser from Vandenberg Mechanised Industries, giving it a more Taurian feeling.
This choice was seen as the best one allowing the new Hatchetman to mix its firepower depending on the range, the opponent and the mission but sending a clear message: no one can escape the Taurians.
Battle History
So far, only pirates have been facing the wrath of the new HCT-4T. One such example was on Althea’s Choice where Subaltern Florence Power in her brand “new†Hatchetman fought against the ‘Mech of the leader of the pirate band trying to raid the town of Althea’s Choice
The Wolverine receiving shots from a PPC tried to get at closer ranges, until he found out the foolishness of such a move as the small canyons of the mountains of Althea’s Choice were a perfect set for the Hatchetman hunting it and finishing it with a Hatchet strike in the head.
Variants
This peculiar variant is so liked that Thomas Calderon ordered Taurian Territorial Industries to produce this variant when they will be able to do so instead of the 3F.
Deployment
Every single Hatchetman in the Taurian Defense Forces has been upgraded to this new standard and Taurian Territorial Industries has even been receiving orders from abroad.
Notable ‘MechWarriors
Subaltern Florence Power is the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion of the Pleiades Lancers and a convinced user of the new Taurian Hatchetman. She led her unit into several defensive battles against pirates, making perfect use of her ‘Mech to set ambushes and to force the raiders to face her unit in restricted ground.

And now the TSM Axe (but with a mistake in the speed since SSW is not up-to-date on the TSM rules)
Overview
The Hatchetman was first and foremost an urban combat ‘Mech where its combo of mobility, firepower and hatchet was more than a match for most ‘Mech in its preferred fighting area but that was before the arrival of the Clans.
The Hatchetman was too slow, undergunned and not protected enough, while using a physical weapon was both a blessing (as the Clans didn’t use them) and a curse (as they thought of it as being a break of proper combat rules).
The HCT-5S while adapted to fight against the Inner Sphere had shown some serious limitations and it was time to turn out a successor. Luckily, Defiance Industries had begun working on one and was able to quickly produce the prototypes of what would become the HCT-5FC and send them for trials and tests by the AFFC.
Capabilities
Deciding to focus on what was the main advantage of the Hatchetman, i.e. its mobility and its hatchet, Defiance Industries redesigned the whole ‘Mech around a TSM, able to increase both the damage and the ground speed of the HCT-5FC.
This was a huge engineering problem as the heat balance had to be carefully thought to allow for the ignition of the system in most situation and keeping it active while giving it enough firepower.
The “ideal†simulated solution focused around a PPC and 6 Medium Lasers together with a jumping capacity of 150 meters.
However, there was no way to fit all that in the Hatchetman.
The solution came from the Draconis Combine. Thanks to the rescue of Hohiro Kurita by Victor Steiner-Davion, the relations between both realms had cooled a little and access to advanced gear was possible under conditions. Since the Draconis Combine had built a factory to produce a new engine, the 225 XL, with the aim of designing a new ‘Mech based on it, ‘Mech that was not yet operational, they agreed to sell at a good price a part of their production.
This new input gave Defiance Industries what they needed to finish their prototype, giving it a maximal ground speed a little under 90 KpH before activating the TSM.
The protection was not forgotten with 9.5 tons of standard armour, giving the HCT-5FC almost the maximum bearable for a ‘Mech of 45 tons and a Guardian ECM to neutralise the electronics of other ‘Mechs at short ranges where the Hatchetman is supposed to fight.
Battle History
During one of the raids on Timbuktu by the infamous Morrison's Extractors, a Hatchetman of the 11th Lyran Guards assigned to defend a convoy carrying germanium managed to hold a full Lance of Star League level Light ‘Mechs until reinforcements arrived and the convoy could escape.
In its after-action report, the pilot praised the responsiveness and the extra speed of the new Hatchetman as well as the might of its Hatchet.
Variants
A missile armed Hatchetman is said to be in the works but the main problem will be the ignition of the TMS system with ammo-based weapons, which in a long campaign could prove difficult.
Deployment
As a reminder of its origin, the first patch of Hatchetman was sent to the 10th Lyran Guards, the same unit that had allowed it to come into existence.
After that it spread into the whole AFFC becoming a favourite of ‘MechWarriors assigned to urban or restricted grounds.
Notable ‘MechWarriors
‘MechWarrior Maryvonne McKenzie was assigned a HCT-5FC upon her arrival in the 11th Lyran Guards and she has put it to good use her “Slasher†against Morrison’s Extractors. After her fight, she has been requested to train other ‘MechWarriors assigned a HCT-5FC into riding the “heat wave†like she did.

Two very good ones Ice! Really surprised that more Taurian models haven't showed up here. I am looking at you masterarminas!!!
Not to many Draconis attempts either from what I see.....
Ice in regards to the Triple Strength Myomer and the new rules I think I am going to stick with my first instinct.

Hatchet are too barbarian ;D
Ice in regards to the Triple Strength Myomer and the new rules I think I am going to stick with my first instinct.
My fluff still holds.
-
I was thinking something from the Sohei perhaps as they break with DCMS concepts and perhaps include a C3 Slave for maximum team work! ;)
-
From who?
-
I'll see if I can put a decent Kuritan Hatchetman (ono-hei 斧兵) together when I get off work in the morning.
-
Oh, the -5K. Got it.
-
In the mid-30490s Hachiman Taro Industries gained access to several captured Hatchetman and began to reverse engineer the Mech to suit the taset of the warriors of the DCMS. Using the Ryu-no-Tsuyo-sa Repair facility as their base of operation the Hachiman Taro began by changing the aesthetics of the Mech by giving it a more bulky appearance. They accomplished this by shaping the exterior with additional and more varied appearance. There was little that could do to hte head/cockpit due to the nature of the full-head ejection system. The shape of the axe head was changed giving the 'blade' end amore rounded edge and adding a spike to the back end. The hatchet is now made out of proprietary tungsten steel alloy. All three variations created by Hachiman Taro feature the Nissan 180XL and nine tons of Durallex Special Medium armor. Like so many Mechs produced in the Combine, these One-hei are not fitted with double heat sinks, so heat management is a priority for the Mechwarrior in the cockpit.
The Ono-hei-4K is a fairly standard upgrade of the original Hatchetman which see the Imperator Code Red LB 10-X autocannon found in the Wolf Trap replacing the AC/10. A third medium laser is mounted and a C3 slave has also been mounted. Again, like many Combine Mechs, no CASE has been added to the ammo bins to protec both Mech and pilot.

The Ono-hei-4KX is a testbed model that replaces the hatchet with a katana-style sword (still awaiting approval) to better appeal to the more traditional samuai with in the DCMS rank and file. Additional weaponry is confined to close quarter combat as a quartet of various-sized pulse lasers make up the battery.
A Guardian ECM suite gives the Ono-hei additiona battlefield protection.

Nice Abele!
The Ono is the name of a 55 tonner I did for the Sohei already based on the Hitotsume Kozo.

Overview:
As one of the FedCom's flagship 'Mechs, the AFFC needed the Hatchetman to be able to operate on the frontline against the Clans. However, the sad fact was that the 'Mech proved slow and fragile in the face of the invaders. Advanced technology, including data shared by the Draconis Combine, was brought to bear to correct this as quickly as possible.
Capabilities:
To reduce the speed disadvantage of the Hatchetman, an extra-light engine was demanded. This proved challenging until the Combine shared the VOX engine they were developing for a future Elemental-hunter medium 'Mech in the same weight bracket. With this to work with, engineers designed a new torso for the Hatchetman, almost tripling the protection.
Reports had shown that the right arm laser was of limited use in the field since Mechwarriors wanted to use the hatchet held in that arm, so the weapon was removed and a small pulse laser fitted to fire backwards, covering this blind spot since it was assumed that in close assaults the Hatchetman could find itself swarmed by Elementals. The left arm's weapon was upgraded to a similar but larger pulse laser.
Johnston Industries obtained Kallon's new copy of the Combine's C3 unit, integrating it into the Hatchetman and arguing that the 'Mech makes an ideal spotter for a fire-support lance since it should always be trying to close with the enemy. They also fitted triple strength myomers to improve ground mobility and removed one heatsink, allowing the Hatchetman to build heat for this more effectively.
Variants:
While Defiance happily built weapons for the new Hatchetman, there was an argument that the advanced systems made refitting existing units almost impossible so they also began developing a refit package. Built around the same new reactor, this HCT-4S variant fits double heatsinks and removes the right arm laser, replacing the autocannon with a pair of the largest pulse lasers available. Proponents of the refit argue that removing the ammunition makes the 'Mech fare more survivable.
On Quentin, the Draconis Combine is building its own Hatchetman, the HCT-4K. Like the HCT-4S they have removed the heavy autocannon but they have instead opted to use the Hermes 270 extralight reactor they developed for their Wolf Trap and Mauler 'Mechs, adding yet another jump jet for the most agile Hatchetman yet. In place of the autocannon is a Lord's Light 2 Extended Range PPC and an anti-missile system. The Combine have not removed the laser from the right arm and have fitted a katana-like sword blade in place of the hatchet.

Very nice drak!
-
Not to many Draconis attempts either from what I see.....
;D
Here is the HCT-3KS with a small reference for Blacknova and bigger ones for you Takiro.
Those out of the Way
Might still be found worth of it
With their own ways.
During the latest wars between the Federated Commonwealth and the Draconis Combine, the DCMS managed to get their hands on a lot of typical Steiner and Davion ‘Mechs, among them the “barbarian†Hatcheman with its inelegant and unworthy of a true Samurai.
Orders were given to device something with a true Warrior blade but the truth is that it was never a top priority by the traditionalist industrial basis of the Draconis Combine. All it took for a Hatchetman to be upgraded along Kuritan ways was someone thinking out of the box like the Sohei unit.
Shodan Asano Kai was the perfect fit to pilot this peculiar ‘Mech. Born on Kessel from a mixed couple, his father being a Lyran merchant and his mother a Kuritan Aerotech, he was always ostracised as being different (being tall and sporting red hair didn’t help him) and earned a nickname from early school years “namban†or “Barbarian from the Southâ€. In spite of this or because of it, he tried to enter the DCMS through several proving grounds rising from infantry to ‘Mech only to be rejected for the heir of some noble. Instead of allowing himself to fail, Asano Kai simply accepted his faith and decided to serve the Draconis Combine by becoming a tech and perhaps one day reaching his “true†potential. It is thanks to his dedication that he was rewarded by a billet for the Sohei unit and that he felt in love with Ono (the Axe) the Hatchetman HCT-3KS and its blend of speed, firepower and protection.
The protection of the HCT-3KS was improved thanks to the use of 8.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous Armour, courtesy of Luthien Armor Works. Since this ‘Mech was supposed to get at close ranges to bring in its Hatchet, it was given an Anti-Missile System with one ton of ammo (after all, fights with the Clans aren’t supposed to last) shielded in a CASE and a MASC system to allow it to close the gap with its target as quickly as possible.
The AC/10 has been replaced by a tried Lord’s Light PPC from a Panther, the Medium Laser in the Right Arm moved to the Left one to supplement the one already there and a Victory 23R Medium Laser from a Dragon has been added to the Right Torso. Thanks to the 10 Double Heat Sinks, it can fire and move almost without any problem.
Going through a specific training regiment, Shodan Asano Kai managed to develop specific tactics using the firepower of Ono his ‘Mech at longer ranges before quickly closing in bringing in more firepower (from the 3 Medium Lasers and from other friendly units thanks to the C3 Slave unit located in the Head) before unleashing a single hit from his axe destroying most targets.
By the end of 3052, It remained to be seen if this tactics would be efficient against the Clans

Nice Ice!
Only one more day left for Hatchetman entries folks, get them done!!
-
Hatchetman and Blackjack were tough. Hope the next one's easier.
-
It's the Phoenix Hawk next, I believe. I've already got six designs down for that one. Just need some fluff.
-
Ugh. Almost as bad. Besides laser boat, there isn't much. Now, the Cicada...
-
Lets stay focused on the Hatchetman for another fifteen hours then it is all over. ;)
-
Only four and a half hours remaining!
-
Probably not gonna get a chance to fluff this one used on Solaris 7 by a Kurita Cooperative but I thought I'd post it for your viewing pleasure.

Ok folks, this contest is over. No more entries please.
-
Almost a month after our contest has concluded and I am still going over entries. Hopefully I will have something this week for everyone.
-
Well folks this one is probably a good two months in the offing and all I can say is sorry. Should have been done sooner. Sure it is the summer time and it is easy to get side tracked and yeah there were twenty-eight (28) different entries from six different designers (2 Takiro, 3 Irose, 13 Abele, 4 Red Pins, 3 Ice Hellion, 3 drakensis) say you could say a lot of people took a hack at this one. Well enough apologies and jokes – lets just get on with it!
DISQUALIFIED
28. HCT-4K (Takiro) Kurita
Now I know a Gauss Rifle ain't the best up close weapon but its big long-range punch would make the Hatchetman pretty formidable. A Solaris variant utilized in our home games by a Kurita Gladiator this would certainly be different. Unfortunately, I didn't get the fluff done so it ends up disqualified but I wanted to get a Gauss Hatchet in for the sake of diversity. No matter, no fluff and ya get disqualified!
27. HCT-4K (drakensis)
This Kurita variant tried to bring a Sword to a Hatchet contest and as a result got disqualified which is too bad. Reminds me a lot of my FedCom 5P with its 270 XL Engine (6/9/6), the Triple Strength Myomer (7/11), ten Double Heat Sinks, and ER PPC main gun. For a while it had me second guessing myself that the 5P may have been better served as a Draconis Combine BattleMech rather than a FedCom one. The C3 Slave certainly would have been a great addition to my 5P but I am not sure I love the Anti-Missile System. Nine tons of standard armor (144 factor) isn’t bad by any means but the inclusion of a Sword sort of doomed the whole enterprise before it began which sucks.
26. HCT-4KX Ono-hei (Abele)
The Kurita Mech-Sword is not developed till 3058 by the Draconis Combine as an “honorable†alternative to the “crude†hatchet so I have to place this design here. I like the 4K series basis upon which this experimental is being developed as it uses the common Chariot Type II frame, your Nissan 180 XL Engine (4/6), four Jump Jets (4), and nine tons of Durallex Special Medium armor (144 factor). Armed with a Large Pulse, two Medium Pulses, and a Small Pulse it would be deadly accurate not to mention the C3 Slave protected by a Guardian ECM Suite making this ‘Swordsman’ even more precise. I understand the philosophy behind using fourteen Single Heat Sinks but for an experimental model you can certainly get some Double Heat Sinks.
25. HCT-S7 Altrichter (Abele)
While I liked this Solaris blazer entry it had to be disqualified because of its use of Mace which was not available at this time. Using a 225 XL Engine and another Jump Jet it moves faster (5/8/5) than its predecessors which is further augmented by a Triple Strength Myomer (6/9). This would make the Mace even more terrifying in combat which could cause some devastating damage along with that Blazer. Backed by two Medium Pulses and a Small Laser it is capable of immense destruction plus it has eight and half tons of ferro-fibrous armor for max protection. All in all a scary Maceman coming soon (but just not now) to an arena near you!
NO HATCHET
24. HCT-S7 Bohringer (Abele)
This faster (5/8/5) Solaris fighting Mech featuring twin SRM-6s, two Medium Pulses, two Medium Lasers, two Small Lasers, a Flamer and no Hatchet is certainly intriguing but how can it be a Hatchetman?! It makes me think of a larger Commando with great short-range killing power but would certainly be limited by its weapon range. Still it is a nimble city fighter certainly and an interesting concept which I wouldn’t mind seeing more of but not a design that is going to win this Hatchetman concept.
23. HCT-4X-C (Red Pins)
With no Hatchet, and unlike his other designs, no Triple Strength Myomer this anti-Elemental Mech sure is different. After trying a Clan massed ER Small machine in combat my flavor for those grouped tiny weapons has sort of disappeared. I probably would have gone with four Mediums over the eight Small Lasers you did here. The Beagle Active Probe works as an infantry finder for its role and the EndoSteel frame with the 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) works as a nice base for the machine. Eleven Double Heat Sinks can dissipate the heat of those tiny lasers just fine but the two Large Lasers can’t be fired at the same time without some overheating. Finally, nine and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) do a great job at protecting it. Unfortunately, without a Hatchet and with all those Smalls I can’t really place it higher.
22. HCT-4X-B (Red Pins)
While I’d like to see a Hatchetman without a Hatchet – as Grayson Carlyle might say – it wouldn’t be in a contest where I am looking for the best most optimal Hatchetman. Like your other 4X models the B has an EndoSteel chassis and is powered by a 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) along with Triple Strength Myomer (7/11). Eleven Double Heat Sinks dissipate what is generated by the two Large Lasers, two Small Lasers, and the LRM-5 which has been added in place of the hatchet. Using FASCAM munitions for that small missile rack and having a Guardian ECM Suite makes me think is this a Capellan design? Either that or for some reason I am thinking about a larger version of the Spector. Nine and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) also provide a very near max armor arrangement. In conclusion good design but just not a Hatchet, MAN!
21. HCT-S7 Haldane (Abele)
This is a truly innovative Solaris fighter featuring two Retractable Blades rather than a Hatchet. A fascinating gimmick for the arenas it was not introduced in canon timeline until 3067 but it is indeed around thanks to AgroMechs who began using them in 2420. Rather cutting a swath through crops it was the Word of Blake who transformed it into a combat weapon but this design could start that process early. This Twinblade is faster thanks to the 225 XL Engine and slightly more mobile (5/8/5). Armed with a Large Pulse, two Medium Pulses, and two Medium Lasers it is a deadly accurate close in fighter but it isn’t really a Hatchetman without two Retractable Blades. An intriguing idea though which I wouldn’t mind seeing developed further.
PASSABLE
20. HCT-S7 Maurus (Abele)
This Solaris no big gun entry is certainly interesting as it uses a 225 XL Engine and another Jump Jet to exceed the movement profile (5/8/5) of its forebearer. I got no problem with four Medium Lasers, three Medium Pulses, the Small Pulse, and even the Small Laser as they make up a Piranha like arsenal that can be devastating at close range. A Triple Strength Myomer does add to your combat effectiveness and makes some sense with all that laser weaponry. However, I dislike a single Streak SRM-2 or an SRM 2 for that matter simple because they have too much ammunition. If those fifty rounds blow up you are screwed even with a CASE as it takes out your XL Engine. I could see this as a unique Solaris Mech certainly but sorry to say not a fan of it otherwise.
19. HCT-S7 Bender (Abele)
This Solaris gladiator reminds me of the original AC/10 variant with a couple of notable exceptions. One, it uses the 180 XL Engine (4/6/4) from the 5S to save on weight which looks like it goes to the armor of this Hatchetman. Now protected by nine and a half tons of standard armor plating this forty-five-tonner now features near maximum protection. Second, a Triple Strength Myomer has again been added boosting its speed (5/8) and damage following activation. Not bad at all but it still reminds me of a one off arena fighter which is unique in design and not quite what I am looking for here.
18. HCT-4T (Abele)
This Taurian variant made with Capellan help strikes me as far too advanced for either power at this time. Armed primarily with an LRM-15 with Artemis IV FCS and three tons of ammo along with the trademark Hatchet it like the Futoushibing reminds me a lot of the AXM-2N Axman. Rounding out the armament is two Medium Pulses and a Small Pulse which is even more lostech. Seven tons of ferro-fibrous (125 factor) with CASE is in line with the Capellan basis and is perhaps the most plausible lostech addition. Built on the standard Hatchetman chassis and the 180 Fusion Engine (4/6/4) it is also equipped with ten Double Heat Sinks. Perhaps if there was less cutting-edge Star League weaponry I’d be ok with this design but it is just too much for the Concordat at this time.
17. HCT-5T (Abele)
Very similar to Abele’s 4T and Liao’s Hatchetman this Taurian model made with Capellan help is probably too high-tech for the Concordat. Although I find the PPC more reasonable than the LRM with Artemis variant that preceded it. The two Streak SRM-2s I’d be willing to overlook even though the Medium Pulse might be the straw that broke the camel’s back here for me. Two Medium Lasers and the trademark Hatchet round out the armament which is cooled by ten Double Heat Sinks. Built on the standard Hatchetman chassis and the 180 Fusion Engine (4/6/4) it is protected by seven tons of ferro-fibrous armor (125 factor) with CASE. Better than your 4T Abele but there were better Taurian variants presented.
16. HCT-4X-A (Red Pins)
Using an EndoSteel frame and the 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) with Triple Strength Myomer (7/11) like the rest of your 4 series is a solid basis for the Hatchetman. Not sure why you downgraded to ten Single Heat Sinks here though especially with the ER upgrade to one of the Large Lasers or just didn’t go whole hog with two. Four Small Lasers here could have been upgrade to two Mediums as well as I really don’t like whole bunch of tiny laser weapons any more from experience. Kept the Hatchet which is good for this contest as well as the nine and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) which provides solid protection. Overall, not a horrible design with some curious choices which is in line for an experimental machine but there were better presented here in my opinion.
15. HCT-6S (Irose)
Correcting the 5S faults this entry went to an EndoSteel chassis and returned to the GM 180 Engine rather than the Edasich Motors XL model which is prone to destruction due to its bulky nature. Two solid design decisions but why not keep the ferro-fibrous as you would certainly have the space? This would have given you the near max armor factor and at least another half-ton of mass to work with. Also, I might have gone with all Medium Lasers as opposed to one Medium Laser and one Medium Pulse for secondary weaponry which seems a bit weak to me. Heat Sinks is a small issue as I generally prefer Double but only a jumping Alpha Strike will generate an overheat (+3). I also may have dropped the ballistic LB 10-X for a lighter energy weapon and uprated to a 225 Fusion Engine. Not some bad ideas Irose but I preferred others more than this concept.
14. HCT-4D (drakensis)
This Davion variant used an advanced EndoSteel chassis and a VOX 225 XL Engine (5/8/5) from the Komodo along with a Triple Strength Myomer to create an interesting Hatchetman. The LB 10-X Autocannon, Medium Pulse, and Small Pulse do seem like an underwhelming offensive design but one that ten Single Heat Sinks could probably deal with. Nine tons of standard armor (144 factor) creates a pretty good protective shell for this BattleMech but it was the C3 Slave that goes a little too far for me. While the Combine might neglect the technology because of it’s traditionalist warrior beliefs I doubt they would export it to a mortal enemy who has just recently become an ally because of the Clan invasion.
13. HCT-4C Futoushibing (Abele)
The Axe Soldier is something very interesting to me and I wish there was something more. This Capellan Hatchetman reminded me of the AXM-2N Axman with its LRM-15 with Artemis IV FCS that is feed by three tons of ammo. Protected by a CASE this large munition supply provides two dozen rounds of firepower. It comes on the standard chassis which is presumably copied from the original as is the 180 Fusion Engine (4/6/4). Seven and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (130 factor) is a little light in terms of protection but better than the original 3F. It also is equipped with two Medium Lasers, a Flamer, and a Guardian ECM Suite. Ten Double Heat Sinks disperse even Alpha Strikes when jumping. It is a bit early for Shengli Arms of Victoria which didn’t reopen in canon till 3057 and it is a real shame that there isn’t more here for the only Liao entry. Perhaps this could have been designed as a Capellan OpFor Mech or as part of a Capellan Imposter program to infiltrate FedCom planets especially ones occupied in the Sarna March or even Chesterton.
12. HCT-S7 (Abele)
Inspired by the Mad Hatter’s S7 variants this Defiance production does feature the 225 XL Engine (5/8/5) that many of them utilized. I can get behind that as well as the eight and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) plus who doesn’t like the Blazer? I like it a lot here especially when combined with the Triple Strength Myomer which helps the Hatchet. Two Medium Lasers and even a Small Pulse make for nice supplementary weapons but I am not sure I like the LRM-5. Probably would have gone with an SRM-4 instead for greater short-range pop. Other than that, she certainly ain’t bad my friend. Ultimately others outdid you in this contest but this was a real good try.
11. HCT-4D (Abele)
This Davion TSM variant made on Addicks was even faster using a 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) which was supplemented even more by a Triple Strength Myomer. Using EndoSteel over Ferro-Fibrous is a nice touch as well and the energy armament seems good as well. Not sure why you threw in the Machine Gun though as a second Small Pulse Laser would have done the job just as well. That is really the only thing I don’t like about this variant which compares quite well to my HCT-5P. Different loadouts certainly with your ER Large Laser as a main gun while two Medium Lasers, two Medium Pulses, Small Pulse, and that Machine Gun serve as backups. Not bad at all but not good enough to win, sorry bud!
Contenders
10. HCT-4S (drakensis)
This Steiner dual Large Pulse variant which goes to a VOX 225 XL Engine (5/8/5) and Triple Strength Myomer (6/9) is my favorite from drakensis this contest. Going with an EndoSteel chassis was a nice touch especially in conjunction with the Komodo power plant for great weight savings. A Medium Laser was also included with the Hatchet and two Large Pulses which may seem short range or underpowered but I like it. This energy arsenal can be cooled by ten Double Heat Sinks and it doesn’t utilize the C3 Computer which is probably verboten at this time outside Kurita space. Nice job bud but I liked others better.
9. HCT-4KC Ono-hei (Abele)
The Hatchetmaster is very much like the Kurita 4K presented by Abele as it is based on the Standard Chariot Type II chassis, powered by a Nissan 180 XL Engine (4/6), featuring four Jump Jets (4), and nine tons of Durallex Special Medium armor (144 factor). However, the 4KC which is also made at the Ryu-no-Tsuyo-so (Strength of the Dragon) Repair Facility on Oshika has an ER PPC as its main gun rather than a LB 10-X AC and only can muster two Medium Lasers instead of three. What is most fascinating about this Hatchet wielder is that it fields a massive C3 Master allowing it coordinate the operation of an entire C3 lance as well as TAG opponents for artillery. Unfortunately, it again features fourteen Single Heat Sinks which especially with its new energy main gun seems to hold it back in my opinion. I understand your justification based on traditional design norms but fielding a Hatchetman for the DCMS is hardly typical to begin with. Darn shame.
8. HCT-4X (Red Pins)
My favorite of your 4X series is the base model with an EndoSteel chassis and 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) with Triple Strength Myomer (7/11) that reminds me a lot of my own entry. Armed with two Large Lasers and two Small Lasers it has a simple all-energy arsenal which doesn’t require resupply. A Guardian ECM Suite makes it an excellent raider and the Hatchet can be quite destructive when the TSM is active. Eleven Double Heat Sinks do a good job cooling what they can and nine point five tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) produce near max protection. A very solid contender for the FedCom top spot indeed with good fluff I can certainly see it competing against a few others as an experimental unit. However, I liked other designs just a bit better Red Pins – very sorry. Good try!
7. HCT-4S (Irose)
This AC/20 carrier is what Steiner designers originally intended and I really like the angle of an idea that just won’t die. It could even be a Lyran patriot's answer to a Davion dominated Federated Commonwealth. Ultimately, I am not a fan of the 180 XL Engine which is more expensive but it does already exist. I probably would have gone with Ferro-Fibrous and EndoSteel but I am not sure some entitled Steiner advocates would agree with that assessment though. Good hook but not enough to get you into the winner circle though. I like this as a limited refit package or in the hands of a few individuals spread throughout Lyran space.
NEAR MISSES
6. HCT-4K Ono-hei (Abele)
This Kurita 4K series used the standard Chariot Type II chassis, a Nissan 180 XL (4/6), four Jump Jets (4), and nine tons of Durallex Special Medium armor (144 factor) to establish a sound foundation for a Draconis Hatchetman. Ferro-Fibrous could have gotten you to max protection level and a CASE would have been better for pilot safety. I really like the concept of the Ryu-no-Tsuyo-so (Strength of the Dragon) Repair Facility on Oshika which would be Uncle Chandy’s personal ‘Mech factory. The LB 10-X Autocannon with two tons of ammunition (20 rounds), three Medium Lasers, and the trademark Hatchet or Ono in this case makes for a very familiar arsenal which is very good. The addition of a C3 Slave is perhaps the best with this BattleMech as it can close in and let its lancemates join in the action too. Eleven Single Heat Sinks while justified as a traditional Combine design practice were probably why this one was a near miss. The drive to optimize the Dragon’s BattleMech forces is not traditional at all and ten Double Heat Sinks probably would have put you over the top.
5. HCT-5FC (Ice Hellion)
This high end AFFC model which is built with Kurita parts was very good and nearly made it to the top of my list. Importing the 225 XL Engine (5/8/5, presumably the VOX used on the Komodo) from the Draconis Combine is a bit of a stretch but not too much of one that can be overcome. However, even with the Triple Strength Myomer (6/9) this version is a step slower than mine (5P) even though you saved 3 tons between the engine mass and one less jump jet. Yours is probably cheaper as well because it uses a smaller engine and achieves armor maximum by utilizing nine and a half tons of armor (152 factor). Both use the standard Chariot Type II chassis which does make use of existing parts and allows for refits of existing Hatchetman. Both also come equipped with ten Double Heat Sinks and a Guardian ECM Suite which enhances their operations. The big difference between my 5P and your 5FC seems to be armament well aside from the Hatchet anyway. You have a standard PPC instead of an ER PPC and six Medium Lasers compared to my four Medium Lasers. So it seems like you’ve poised an excellent design question here Ice - which do I like more here for the Hatchetman – movement or firepower? To me the answer is movement simply because of the Hatchet and the need to close as quickly as possible to deliver its signature cleaving. Also, the ER PPC allows the 5P to engage targets at longer range as well but my man this was some contender. Very very close, made me stop and think, great job!
4. HCT-4T (Ice Hellion)
This Taurian entry with excellent fluff was so very close to the winner’s circle but was beat out by one other design. Nothing real wrong per say with this PPC, Large Pulse, dual Medium Laser, Hatchet wielding badass. Ten Double Heat Sinks help dissipate most of the heat generated by the arsenal and seven point five tons of Ferro-Fibrous (134 factor) provided pretty good protection. Using more lostech and being slow (4/6/4) with less armor plating than your competitor (who went on to win the whole contest) was ultimately the deciding factor. Very well done but just shy of being a winner. Sorry Ice!
WINNER
3. HCT-3KS (Ice Hellion)
An excellent Kurita entry by Ice Hellion featuring in universe fluff which details the Sohei. Using the base HCT-3F this Draconis variant replaces the AC/10 with a PPC and adds one Medium Laser (3 total). Eight and a half tons of Ferro-Fibrous (152 factor) provide near total protection for this 45-tonner which is augmented by an Anti-Missile System. This Kurita Hatchetman with a CASE to protect the ammunition from this added defensive system is pretty darn tough especially when combined with the GM 180 Fusion Engine (4/6/4). A two-ton MASC (8) provides a boost to that speed for a Berserker like feel but would be difficult to refit. C3 Slave is also added which is a big plus and while it feels like a unique variant rather than a production model this one is just good enough to sneak into the winner's circle. The fluff was what put you over the top here Ice, good enough for bronze. This will take its place as the new HCT-4K in the Salient Horizon setting.
2. HCT-5P (Takiro)
This high-tech AFFC model really set the bar for me in this contest with its new General Motors 270 XL (6/9/6) combined with a Triple Strength Myomer (7/11) for rapid maneuvering and maximum hatchet damage (18). Now the XL Engine does have its drawbacks (fragility and high cost) but the improved speed here has its advantages. It can rapidly close with its opponents to use its four Medium Lasers and Hatchet in devastating fashion. Using the ER PPC as this 'Mechs main gun gives it superior range and hard-hitting fire power at range as well. For defenses this Hatchetman features eight and half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) which is near max plus a Guardian ECM Suite. This can help to knock down advanced targeting systems and improves the Mech's survivability. Retaining the Chariot Type II internal structure with the TharHes electronics along with other existing components does allow for refits of existing models even though that would not be a simple process. Good enough for silver this time around with too a high bar for most of you to overcome. This will take its place as the new HCT-5FC in the Salient Horizon setting.
1. HCT-4T (Irose)
This hot Taurian all energy variant narrowly overcame Ice Hellion’s own 4T to win not only the Concordat’s top prize but our overall competition as well. I ultimately judged this model which compares well to the Grasshopper more realistic than Ice’s as it only uses Double Heat Sinks for lostech innovations. Its Large Laser, five Medium Lasers, two Flamers, and Hatchet don’t run out of ammunition meaning it can stay in the field forever. Using most of the surplus weight for armor plating, nine and a half tons which results in near total protection, means it can take a licking and keep on ticking. I like to think of this design as a hardpoint against enemy incursions which is tough to overcome especially when paired with other defenses. Even crazy Thomas Calderon would appreciate that as it would give Davion aggressors or would be bandits second thoughts about trying to take Concordat property. Congratulations to our gold medalist and new HCT-4T of BT Salient Horizons!

As to the no hatchet thing, there was a canon variant without one, the HCT-3NH. Should not e a reason for basically DQ'ing four entries.
-
Like I said during the review it is an intriguing idea but your not gonna finish high up in a contest looking for a HATCHET, man! Or mech in this case.
-
Glad you liked the HCT-4T.
I agree with your comments on the HCT-4S about the XL engine but I could not get the design to work without. If you keep the standard engine and use Endo Steel you still need to come up with 1.5 tons- either dropping a medium laser and half a ton of armor or dropping 1.5 tons of armor. Unfortunately there is not enough space for FF armor and you have to switch back to standard heatsinks so the design will run hot.

It was so very Steiner!

Congratulations Irose.

Ferro-Fibrous and Pulse Lasers are not too much for the Taurian Concordat :P
