Title: Optimizing the Hermes II
Post by: Takiro on April 12, 2020, 09:19:25 PM
Number sixteen in our optimization series is another forty-ton BattleMech with a message for the InnerSphere. Another Marik favorite in this weight class the Hermes II is a larger version of a SLDF scout made by Irian BattleMechs Unlimited. Associated not just with the FWLM but specifically the Dark Shadows Battalion which figures prominently in the 3rd Marik Civil War as a proudly pro-Paul force composing his new Marik Guard along with other intelligence assets like the Eagle Corps. I’d assume this ‘Mech would be the core of Corrine’s loyalists but I suppose other factions could have a supply as well. Let's see what you guys can do with this Medium BattleMech for the BattleTech: Shattered Dawn setting. I imagine there is a few variants which might make it here.

Alas, there is no Mech of the Week Article again for us to draw inspiration from but there is always Sarna.net!

Design Criteria
Design: Hermes II Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 40 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy.
Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday April 24th, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

Based upon the HER-1S variant that was utilized in the origins of the designs past while the Autocannon issue was being addressed, updated with Lostech equipment including the MASC system for increased speeds, Endo Steel and Ferro Fibrous for additional armor protection. Utilizing one Extended Range Large Laser with a traditional Large Laser allows for a continuous barrage at various ranges without the worry of heat buildup. The choice of the standard engine over the extra light variant pleased older Hermes pilots for its survivability in the field.

Also swapping out the Autocannon for an energy based weapon this one though chooses the added punch afforded by the ER PPC. With additional tonnage available due to the engine swap and bevy of secondary weapons and equipment were available to be added for medium range support a pair of Medium Lasers have been added, for infantry support twin small  pulses and a single flamer are included with design. The Hermes II HER-5S has become the example of what happens when you rush upgrades without actually thinking about what is really needed by the Mechwarriors in the field.  Eagerly anticipated by the troops, the HER-5S turned out to be a disappointment when it entered service.  The design fixed non-existent problems, like the heat dissapation system, while ignoring one of the biggest complaints about the original Hermes II, the lack of sufficient ammo for its main gun.  After complaints began to come in from the field (followed by declining orders from the FWLM), the engineers of Irian Battlemechs took a second look at the Hermes.  This time, rather then just throwing new technology haphazardly at the Hermes II, they studied the actual strengths and deficiencies of the mech.

The first thing they noted was that many mechwarriors were complaining about a lack of ammunition for the Autocannon.  This problem was only exacerbated by the new Ultra Autocannon that consumed ammunition at twice the rate of the older Oriente model.  As the mechwarriors did like the additional hitting power of the Ultra AC-5, it was decided to keep that model but to increase the ammo bins, doubling the ammo supply.  With so much ammo it was also decided to mount a CASE system to protect against an ammo explosion.

To save weight for these changes the Intek Medium Pulse Laser was replaced with the older Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Laser.  While this reduced the damage curve of the Hermes II, it has a longer range which was preferred by the Mechwarriors.  They felt that the Medium Pulse Lasers very short range does not complement the Ultra AC-5 which has a minimum effective range.  The design team also removed a half ton of armor for the CASE system, however by switching to a Ferro-Fibrous compound they were able to provide marginally better armor protection.  Even so the legs remain weak point, due to their slender size they were unable to add any additional armor there.

The final change was to replace the double heatsink with standard models.  During field testing it proved impossible to overheat an undamaged Hermes II.  Not only were the engineers able to save on costs (such to appreciation of the FWL treasury), they were able to save space needed for the bulky Ferro-Fibrous armor.

The new Hermes II has began deployment to the front line troops, where it has been greeted with great enthusiasm by the troops.

The Hermes II has long been a mainstay of House Marik.  As technology recovered from the Helm Memory Core was being introduced, the FWLM decided to undergo a dramatic revision of this BattleMech.  Originally, the goal was to match the speed of the original SLDF HER-1A Hermes while retaining the same chassis.  However, the design engineers at Irian BattleMechs Unlimited raised serious concerns over using such a large engine (a 360 extra-light fusion engine would be required for such mobility . . . and that engine was not even in the planning stages yet!).

Instead, in the fall of 3050, the engineering team turned over their idea of what a Hermes III might look like.  The design would still incorporate an extra-light engine, but it would be a more common (relatively speaking, that is) VOX 280XL currently being developed for Archer and Warhammer production lines within the League.  This engine would boost the speed of the Hermes III to 75.6 kilometers per hour walking and 118.8 kph running . . . roughly equal to the ground speed of an Assassin or Jenner.

A new chassis would have to be developed using Endo-Steel II internal structure components, and the design called for 7.0 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor plating, giving the Hermes III slightly improved protection.  The improved protection, however, was to the arms and torsos as the engineering research team determined that the internal structure of the legs was liable to be stressed if additional tonnage was added there.

CASE (Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment) would be installed in the right torso, where the design team planned to move the autocannon magazine . . . and double it in size.  The AC-5 Autocannon would be replaced with a newly developed LB-10X Autocannon, however.  This weapon would double the damage (from slugs) and add a flexibility in its ability to use Cluster ammunition, while still retaining the same range as the old autocannon.  The original Medium Laser and Flamer were retained as were the ten standard heat sinks.  Due to the fairly low heat of the weapons mix, the use of standard heat sinks was not considered a problem and indeed the prototype Hermes III proved itself to be heat-neutral even on a running Alpha Strike.

Finally, the design team installed a Beagle Active Probe in the center torso which allows the Hermes III to continue its role as a scout leader and "point-man" for its lance mates.

The FWLM procurement board was impressed . . . but also dismayed by the projected price of acquisition of these new BattleMechs.  However, in 3052, the Captain General ordered Irian to begin limited production for field testing with select units of the Free Worlds League Military.

Field tests and trails began in early 3053 and early reports indicate that the Hermes III is being eagerly accepted by those MechWarriors and units lucky enough to be assigned one.

One variant has surfaced . . . the HER-3M which replaces the Flamer with a second Medium Laser.  While this reduces the anti-personnel and anti-vehicular capacity of the BattleMech, it also increases effectiveness against hostile 'Mech forces.  So far, fewer than two dozen HER-3Ms have been produced for field trials.

Here's my two. Fluff will follow

Two new designs coming out of Irian Battlemechs Unlimited, one for general use by FWLM, while the latteris designated for use by the SAFE's Eagle Corps. Both models feature the new 280 XL Fusion with its eleven fixed double heat sinks. The general use HER-4M features the recently acquired Binary Laser Cannon from the CBD Corporatiion. Along with the Blazer, a pair of medium pulse lasers are mounted while the Olympian flamer was retained from the original. This gives the Hermes II the ability to headcap an enemy Mech while having the speed to quickly engage and disengage contact the enemy.

This replacement for the original and obsolete 'Mercury Elite' model is loosely based on the new HER-4M with the addition of an endo-steel chassis allows the replacement of the Binary Laser with an ER Large Laser, a Guardian ECM and a sextet of jump jets. This allows the new Elite to jump and engage at longer ranges, while having added maneuverability and stealth capabilities. The two medium pulse lasers and flamer from the 4M have been retained while 8.5 tons of standard replaces the ferro-fibrous arnour of the 4M.

Hermes II HER-4S

Mass: 40 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-D-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 3,404,380 C-Bills
Battle Value: 973

Chassis: Irian Chassis Class 40 Standard
Power Plant: Hermes 240 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 64.8 km/h
Maximum Speed: 97.2 km/h
Jump Jets: None
    Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: Riese-456 Standard Armor
Armament:
4 Magna 400P Medium Pulse Lasers
    1 Magna II Medium Laser
    1 Purity L-series Flamer
Manufacturer: Coventry Metal Works
    Primary Factory: Coventry
Communications System: Irian E.A.R.
Targeting and Tracking System: Wasat Aggressor

Overview:
Over the course of the Succession Wars, many Hermes II 'Mechs have fallen into the hands of the Lyran Commonwealth. With the sanction of the Captain-General and the Archon after the Outreach Conference, Coventry Metal Works reached out to Irian BattleMechs Unlimited to develop a refit process to upgrade the 'Mechs to face the Clans.

Capabilities:
As part of the refit, Hermes II who have recieved this upgrade see their armament completely replaced. Because most of them were captured and have seen hard service, the original weapons were often replaced with improvised expedients. Going forwards, they replace the arm mounted weapons with equivalents readily available from Coventry (the Magna II and the L-series flamer are used on their Firestarter light 'Mech).

Irian have agreed to ship both replacement electronics to restore the original hardware configurations after similar field expedients, and advanced pulse lasers to replace the Oriente autocannon. While the autocannon is highly reliable, the appearance of the Elemental on the modern battlefield means that 'Mechs need accurate short range firepower to deal with them. The four pulse lasers are mounted centrally and assessment is that if two of the four hit a single Elemental then there is a better than 90% chance of a kill.

Understandably, this has increased the heat profile of the Hermes II, so the refit package also includes double heatsinks that bring the heat burden under control.

Deployment:
The AFFC is deploying the Hermes II alongside Commandos as 'light trooper' lances as they feel that the two designs are no longer suited to a reconnaissence or fast strike role, with more advanced designs regularly able to outpace them. Irian is also manufacturing a similar refit package (without replacing the arm-weapons), for use by the FWLM, provincial forces and their Capellan allies.

Communications System: Irian E.A.R.
Targeting and Tracking System: Wasat Aggressor

Overview:
Based on their joint development of the HER-4S with Coventry, Irian have unveiled their own upgrade package. Unlike the earlier variant, which is intended for refitting existing 'Mechs, HER-4M Hermes II are built from the ground up to integrate advanced technology.

Capabilities:
With a new internal structure, the HER-4M Hermes II has the free tonnage to add jump jet capacity, greatly increasing the design's mobility.

While the original flamer is maintained, the right arm laser is upgraded to a pulse model and the autocannon is replaced by an Extended Range PPC. Double heatsinks make the 'Mech easily able to over-heat, but IBMU argue that it is intended as a sniper, with the ER PPC mostly to be used from outside the range of the other weapons or as a last resort.

Deployment:
Production runs of the HER-4M are going firstly to the Free Worlds Legions for evaluation. If reports are positive then shipments will likely go to other core units of the FWLM federal forces.

    1 Garret-Guardian Interface 2B Guardian ECM Suite
Manufacturer: Irian BattleMechs Unlimited
    Primary Factory: Shiro III
Communications System: Irian E.A.R.
Targeting and Tracking System: Wasat Aggressor

Overview:
IMBU's Shiro III facility is definitely producing HER-4M models of the Hermes II for use by FWLM regular forces, with all references to an alleged HER-4ME model with substantially superior technology the result of wild speculation based off a careless mistyping and could result in legal action under the FWL's official secrets act.

Capabilities:
The HER-4ME does not use a VOX 280XL engine to reach speeds of over 111kph. There is no truth to the rumours that advanced alloys provide it with increased protection across the arms and bodies.

If the HER-4ME were to exist, it could be easily distinguished from its original design by the additional medium lasers in each arm if they had not been cunningly built into recesses that merely appear to thicken the limbs slightly, with retractable caps covering the lenses.

The Imperator Ultra-5 autocannon would, were it hypothetically fitted to the (entirely speculative) HER-4ME provide double the long range firepower at a cost in reliability. Should such a design exist it would require expanded ammunition bins to retain the original endurance and this could be wrapped in Cellular Ammunition Storage for the safety of any mechwarrior.

Battle History:
The HER-4ME does not exist, has never seen action and the only conflicts it has been involved in is SAFE's aggressive reactions to any suggestions that it may have been employed in covert operations on either side of the FWL's borders.

Deployment:
The HER-4ME does not exist and therefore cannot be the exclusive property of SAFE's Dark Shadows at this time.

Very nice drakensis, I was going to bow out of this contest altogether with Abele entering a Blazer version even though his is different from mine but now unless someone else beats me to it I have another idea.

How about a refitted Capellan version of the Hermes II in service with Isis Marik's followers with Sun Tzu's blessings? In fact I'll go one further with the creation of a new 'allied' force drawn from the Confederation which is directly participating in the 3rd Marik Civil War utilizing Free Worlds designs piloted by 'volunteer' Liao Mechwarriors. Still thinking of a unit name but it would make a lot of sense for Liao to put another finger on the scales of the contest like this. Trying to think of what the Free Worlds Confederation joint unit would be called though........

Capellan Foreign Legion?

Kapteyn Lancers?

Atrean Armored Cavalry?

Capellan Foreign Legion?

Kapteyn Lancers?

Atrean Armored Cavalry?

Hmm, of those I like the Kapteyn Lancers the best but the only problem is that this has nothing to do with the old Concord which is long ago defunct. Likewise wouldn't go Atrean cause they don't yet have Atreus. The Foreign Legion would work but I am actually using that in another fashion for this setting plus I think calling them Capellan defeats the purpose of creating a truly joint force. Good ideas though, please keep the suggestions coming!

A wiki link below for further inspiration on this idea....
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_legion

If we start with the Free Worlds Confederation ruled by House Liao-Marik that might be too far into the future as the next super state of the InnerSphere. A grandiose plan but not in the moment of the 3rd Marik Civil War. Hmm, they are Volunteers for Isis but since I have the Cult of Isis I would stay away from her first name here too but Volunteers does work as a unit name. Perhaps the best way to go is with the Commander's surname (it is a very Liao naming tradition) serving as the first half of these Volunteers and maybe he even pilots a Hermes II?

Another possibility is just to reform the Andurien Hussars (or we could call them the Andurien Volunteers) as it seems to be the focus of Isis military forces is the nearby Duchy. Don't know if I love the idea of mixing the two concepts however but that is a historic thread to point out.

Capellan Foreign Legion?

Kapteyn Lancers?

Atrean Armored Cavalry?

The Thousand Worlds Volunteers?

https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Thousand-World_Coalition

The reference might be a bit too anti-Marik but the name would be grandiloquent enough for Liao while being something totally not Capellan.

And 3 Hermes II with one "mysterious" one :P

Comrade,

As requested we have been gathering intel on the latest developments in the Free Worlds League to help the Chancellor, our Great Leader, decide on the best course of actions for the greatness of the Capellan Confederation.

Thanks to the work performed by the Chancellor’s Ear, we got information on the latest development in Irian BattleMechs Unlimited on their Hermes II. It seems that either Irian BattleMechs Unlmited is experimenting with newest technology or that someone was really not delighted with the HER-5S.
The second hypothesis would indeed be in line with our own analysis of this upgraded ‘Mech that if I may remind you of our analysis “is clearly lacking in terms of raw firepower or even endurance. One also has to wonder why Double Heat Sinks were used when no weapon or mix of it could generate as much heat.”

3 new versions are being tested and if the results are positive, they are likely to be deployed quickly.
We managed to get our hands on extracts from the after-action reports for one of them and to the blueprints for the second one, access to data about the last being a bit more tricky.

“The extra speed provided by the MASC system is a really added-value to the Hermes as it allowed me to keep in pace with a Locust in a pure speed race. In combat, I doubt it could be kept on forever as when used too much, this system has a tendency to freeze the ‘Mech in the middle of its move, leaving it vulnerable.
However to quickly get through a huge area or to bring me in a favourable situation to bring my guns on a target…
Speaking of which, I really like the new weapons: it combines the traditional feeling of the Hermes with a Flamer and a Medium Laser with the touch of extra firepower that was really needed and is provided by a brand new Hellion V Special Binary Laser from Irian BattleMechs Unlimited. The  range is slightly under the one from the usual AC/5 or UAC/5 but the extra damage capacity is something needed to put a quick end to any fight the HER-5T might get involved in, something that might prove useful when the Clans come to us.”

This new version seems to be a simple retrofit of the HER-5S, keeping everything in place and improving through a simple refit kit .
The 5TA is a bit more advanced and could be the next production set for the Hermes if only the Free Worlds League manages to increase the supply of advanced engines. So far, the prototype uses an Hermes 240 XL found in the RFL-5M produced by Kallon Industries.
The saved weight allows for the use of a Guardian ECM, near maximum armour as well as Jump Jets used on Irian for the Trebuchet.
The estimated guess from Capellan Confederation honourable ‘MechWarriors with the right security clearance is that this could lead to even more aggressive use of the Hermes by the Free Worlds League, giving it an edge when trying to scout unnoticed or to get into range for its weapons.

No real information could be found on the latest version, just some observations made when it was out on the field for tests in a black paint.
Its ground speed seems in par with the other Hermes or even a little faster. A further hint is that some engines are coming from a brand new factory built on Irian for new XL Engines that until now were stockpiled without any further use.
It also seems to be able to guide other ‘Mechs or artillery, making us suspect the use of TAG or Narc Missile Beacon.
According to our assessment, the ‘MechWarrior piloting it seems to have been a kind of elite pilot or the Marik engineers have found a way to make easier the piloting of their ‘Mechs.
The weapons are also 100% energy based but its main one seems to have more range than the Binary Laser Canon from the two other versions. Our educated guess is that it is either a PPC, an ER Large Laser or an ER PPC. Due the shortage of PPC, an ER Large Laser is the most likely solution but this must be confirmed.

According to intel gathered on the spaceport (someone in the Master of the Port offices has a weakness and gave us access to shipping logs), a Lance of the mysterious Hermes was sent to the 4th Oriente Hussars on Atreus, which is strange since this unit is supposed to be made of Heavy ‘Mechs.
Kits for the HER-5T are being produced and sent to all the units equipped with HER-5S. It seems that Irian BattleMechs Unlimited is waiting for more engines to produce the second improved Hermes. We have been requesting intel from our comrades following Kallon Industries to see if they could give us some information.

For the Chancellor,

Lei Kaili

Very nice Ice Hellion!

I think the Thousand World Coalition is not what we are looking for given its anti-Free Worlds League intent but not a bad historical try.

Right now I am leaning towards a name like Baranov's Regulars or Volunteers. Originally it was supposed to be a Capellan unit for BattleTech: Shattered Dawn.

Quote
Baranov’s Regulars (6 regiments)
Overview:  Faced with the prospect of returning Capellan nationals and those citizens who espoused Star League ideals polluting Liao military establishment a new unit was created to keep all the bad eggs in one basket. They are named for their commander and the Star League Regulars who now fight to uphold Liao’s rightful claim to the First Lordship. Their “foreign values” may have forever put them under the thumb of the Maskirovka. Only through dedicated and unquestioning service to the CCAF can these soldiers ever hope to prove their worthiness for citizenship. Despite the clash of military doctrines the Regulars are an invaluable force to the Chancellor.
Justification: The last CCAF Parent Formation created, they address the question what happened to all the Capellans returning from SLDF service. Assembled from elements joined the Capellan Confederation in the SLSB.
Child Units: It is possible that the regiments of the Regulars reflect the SL units who mainly made up this formation. 133rd Jump Infantry Division, 202nd Mechanized Infantry Division (The Pride of Cuba), 147th Mechanized Infantry Division, 265th Mechanized Infantry Division (Pride of Pittsburgh), 166th Mechanized Infantry Division (Red Diamond Division), and 7th Jump Infantry Division. They could also contain some or all of the ancestors of the Dismal Disinherited which were assembled in the 2nd Succession War from Capellan Mechwarriors who traced their heritage back to SLDF so their units could also be foreshadowed here.

Now I could include some parts about this unit embracing Star League values but I more had in mind the Chinese volunteer units from the Korean War.

I changed slightly the fluff as I had forgotten my own explanation for the 280XL but you have to know your fluff to understand it (let's say Omni).

Geneva's Volunteers?

Quote
The Andurien Peace Treaty gave Andurien to the Capellan Confederation. In return for this, Terence Liao signed the Treaty of Geneva, the first treaty which would pave the way to the constitution of the Star League. In return for the concessions made in the Andurien Peace Treaty, the Treaty of Geneva guaranteed House Marik the right to the seat of the Free Worlds League at the later Star League High Council.

Geneva's Shadows wouldn't be a bad nickname as it implies a justification for the Marik-Liao Concord involving Andurien. Still I'd probably get away from Baranov's origins as a Star League unit because of the distant linkage. Doubt many in the Confederation would dare speak openly of their love of the old League. Probably have Baranov as a Tikonov expatriate who has vowed to do the utmost in order to further the goals of House Liao-Marik. Just as easily a sink unit for the Capellans to justify involvement in the 3rd Marik Civil War.

Minimalist fluff added to my two Hermes II models. This will be the last 40-tonner I do until the Whitworth comes up for optimization. The Sentinel and Vulcan both fit into the same category as the Assassin, Clint and Hermes II.

The problem is most variants of the Hermes II that I could come up with look like a Clint without jump jets.  It's pretty boring.

Don't shoot the messenger here folks! Sorry I couldn't resist that Hermes joke. Anyway we will break out of this 40 ton morass soon enough. I think the key is to focus on the Mechs role and optimize it accordingly otherwise it will be just like the rest of its weight class and that is no fun. Gonna get my two in here soon as time is slipping away. Here is the first.

HER-5LM HERMES II

Mass: 40 tons
Chassis: Irian Chassis Class 40
Power Plant: Hermes 240
Cruising Speed: 64 kph
Maximum Speed: 97 kph
Jump Jets: None
   Jump Capacity: None
Armor: Hellespont Lite Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
1 Firmir DualMax Binary Laser Cannon
   2 I.W.W. Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: Hellespont Industrials
Primary Factory: Betelgeuse
Communication System: Irian E.A.R.
Targeting & Tracking System: Wasat Aggressor

Overview:
The need for war materiel was keenly felt by all factions in the 3rd Marik Civil War which resulted in some interesting new designs like the HER-5LM Hermes II. Chancellor Sun Tzu Liao's general order to all Capellan citizens that they assist their valiant Marik allies in every way they possibly could resulted in a comprehensive review of all state equipment. This included many salvaged Marik BattleMechs which had been mothballed rather than utilized by the proud CCAF who considered them at best fit for target practice. These cast offs were shipped to Betelgeuse following the outbreak of hostilities for reactivation by Hellespont Industrials who restrarted their shuttered facilities to expressly assist Isis Marik. Liao engineers inspired by the Draconis effort which produced the HER-4K, often referred to as the Hermes III, that utilized two Large Lasers set out to modernize the design to the greatest extent possible. While limited by the lack of certain lostech items their endeavor quickly pushed ahead and produced a highly quality Medium combatant.

Capabilities:
At its core this simple refit swaps the old Oriente Autocannon/5 with the new Firmir DualMax Binary Laser Cannon. This double-barreled Large Laser not only improved on the original light hitting ballistic weapon's firepower but it eliminated the need for ammunition. This increased pilot’s safety eliminating any possibility of ammo explosion while extending its battlefield endurance to maximum. Without the need to resupply this Hermes II can remain in action for as long as its Mechwarrior can remain effective. While the Blazer loses some of the Autocannon's range the exchange of the Olympian Flamer for a second I.W.W. Medium Laser enhanced its mid-range range firepower well past the point of the original Hermes II. Upgrading to Double Heat Sinks helped handle the increased head load from these energy weapons pretty well. A running Alpha Strike will result in a slight overheating condition but one that doesn't produce any negative side effects, at least at first. Finally, the Mech's protective rating was reinforced to near maximum with seven and a half tons of Hellespont Lite Ferro-Fibrous.

Deployment:
Found exclusively in the service of Baranov's Volunteers who have pledged themselves to the future of the Liao-Marik alliance this new design has yet to see combat. Staffed by Liao Mechwarriors in salvaged Marik BattleMechs this new force has only recently been activated. While it remains to be seen if their vaunted Free Worlds Confederation will ever become an actual political reality these warriors are absolutely committed to making this dream come true. If so this new Hermes II may become a flagship Mech of this proposed super state which would rival all others.

Title: Re: Optimizing the Hermes II
Post by: Takiro on April 24, 2020, 05:27:04 PM
Here is my second one which previously appeared after the conclusion of another design contest some time ago. Modified a few things and tried to finish up the fluff.

HER-5DS HERMES II

Mass: 40 tons
Chassis: Irian Second Generation Class 40 Endo Steel
Power Plant: Edasich Motors 280 XL
Cruising Speed: 75 kph
Maximum Speed: 118 kph
Jump Jets: None
Jump Capacity: None
Armor: Kallon FWL Special Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
1 Kali Yama Big Bore Autocannnon/20 (imported from Kalidasa – Silver Hawks)
Manufacturer: Irian BattleMechs Unlimited
Primary Factory: Irian
Communication System: Irian E.A.R.
Targeting & Tracking System: Wasat Aggressor

Overview:
Following the success of the Hunchback designers began to think of even better ways to deliver the short-ranged raw destructive power of an Autocannon/20 into battle aboard a BattleMech. Some thought that a lighter and faster deliver system could better strike and evade even better than the reliable Hunchback. First attempts made by the Regulans to outfit a Cicada armed with this massive gun were tantalizing. Although this ‘Killer Bug’ could rapidly assail an enemy at 129 kilometers per hour its slightly improved armor was still pretty thin and even worse it could only hold a single ton of ammunition. This limited its effectiveness to just five short rounds and left the Cicada completely unarmed. While a slower variant showed promise Gibson Federated BattleMechs pulled the plug and discontinued the project in favor of the CDA-3CJ Cicada. Learning of the project and sensing the potential in such a unit Irian BattleMechs Unlimited immediately saw the potential for its flagship product. Executives knew if they could turn the Hermes II into a fast AC/20 delivery system using cutting edge Star League technology it would boost their bottom line. While some wanted to increase its tonnage and possibly rebrand the new design the company managed to keep the upgrade relatively simple. It would only have to acquire three critical supplies in order to complete the new modifications. While the Civil War delayed this process when it came to mass production several individual examples were completed during the conflict which proved the viability of the final product.

Capabilities:
Using the special Mercury design model a larger 280 XL Engine replaced the old Pitban 240 Engine increased maximum speed by twenty-one kilometers per hour. Obtaining this lostech power plant proved difficult during the Civil War forcing Irian to rely ironically on foreign manufacturers. Edasich Motors in the Federated Commonwealth eventually agreed to the sale of their products for a substantial markup to cover supply difficulties encountered during the conflict. Seven and a half tons of Kallon FWL Special Ferro-Fibrous was far easier to obtain from producers on nearby Stewart. This high-tech armor plating allowed the Hermes II to feature near maximum armor protection increasing its survivability on the battlefield. The Mech’s sole big gun, the Kali Yama Big Bore Autocannnon/20, was imported from Kalidasa in the Silver Hawks Coalition and used on the Hunchback which inspired its design. Removal of the left arm’s lower actuator was necessary to allow the Hermes II to mount the massive cannon in a single location. Ten rounds of ammunition protected by a CASE provide just enough endurance to hit and run in true Hermes fashion. Unfortunately, the large size of this mammoth weapon precluded the inclusion of any supplemental weaponry. Despite this drawback the hard charging nature of the design justified its limited deployment and the rest of the components were readily available thanks to the rapid proliferation of the HER-5S released prior to the Clan Invasion.

Deployment:
Manufactured in limited numbers at the end of the Civil War exclusively for the infamous Dark Shadow Battalion of Paul Marik’s Guard the HER-5DS was a feared opponent. While its low amount of ammo limited its battlefield presence during extended conflicts the presence of these lightning strikers was certainly noticeably especially in the hands of such elite operators. Mechs sporting the names Special Delivery, Goin’ Postal, and Return to Sender are still the stuff of legends. Renowned for their sudden stunning appearances which were often marked by enemy carnage despite larger size comparisons. An effort was made to hunt every single unit down but some are thought to have survived the great conflict.

Variant:
The HER-5DS1 is slightly different from the base model substituting a Gauss Rifle for the AutoCannon/20. While the hitting power is seventy five percent less the range has been dramatically improved. Heat buildup was also drastically decreased making this hard-hitting sniper very capable on the battlefield. As the Gauss ammunition is not explosive the CASE was dropped along with a half-ton of armor. This did lower the war machine’s protection factor but allowed in to maintain two tons of Gauss ammo.

The Hermes is so jealous of the Clint no love coming its way.

The problem is most variants of the Hermes II that I could come up with look like a Clint without jump jets.  It's pretty boring.

Felt the same, I had no urge to fluff what design I could come up with, I don't foresee a good score due to that

With only fourteen entries by seven designers (2 Bradshaw, 1 Irose, 1 masterarminas, 2 Abele, 3 drakensis, 3 Ice Hellion, 2 Takiro) the Hermes II was not as well received as the Clint but the quality of entries was still top notch. No disqualifications again this time around which is a good thing and every entry was at least a contender. However, my standards were very high here for House Marik’s premier BattleMech so only a couple survived to make it to the winner’s circle.

CONTENDERS

14. HER-5DS (Takiro)
This Dark Shadows variant is a fast-moving heavy hitter thanks to its Edasich Motors 280 XL (7/11) Engine and its Kali Yama Big Bore Autocannon/20. Both items having to be imported to Irian would make its creation more difficult. As it only has two tons of ammo for the massive main gun (10 rounds) which is its only weapon that is another negative. I left the 10 (20) Double Heat Sinks which seems to be a large oversight as they are certainly not needed here as even a running Alpha Strike results in only 9 heat. The EndoSteel internal structure already seems to be in place and the 7.5 tons of ferro fibrous (134 factor) with CASE seems easy to get but in the end I am hardest on myself so last place. Already limited in overall number I could see one or two being out there in the service of Marik Special Forces but anymore I really doubt.

13. HER-4S (drakensis)
I am surprised that this salvaged Mech design from Coventry Metal Works in the service of the AFFC as an Elemental killer built with Marik assistance wound up here. Reminding me of the Venom this four Medium Pulse armed Hermes II wasn't the sniper so typical of this Mech. Usually armed with one big gun this design has to close with its armament which includes Medium Laser and Flamer. With its 240 (6/9) Fusion Engine it could perhaps have been a little faster to close with its opponents. Adding to my disappointment was the standard chassis and 7.5 tons of standard armor (120 factor) which occupied none of the massive internal space available. Ferro-fibrous would have been nice but the 10 (20) Double Heat Sinks do a nice job in cooling most of the heat generated. I do have to say that despite finishing here it did inspire my foreign Hermes II Capellan entry which did finish higher.

12. HER-5DS (Ice Hellion)
Seemingly another Dark Shadows Battalion variant which could do a little bit of everything. Jack of all trades and master of none with an armament ranging from an ER Large Laser to a Medium Laser and Flamer which is pretty Hermes II. A Narc Missile Launcher (6) is a Marik like add which is supplemented by a Guardian ECM Suite. Then there is also a TAG which makes it into an artillery spotter. Not bad but a little all over the place and I would have liked a little more focus. I like the 280 XL (7/11) Engine with the MASC (14) for great burst of speed. EndoSteel, 10 (20) Double Heat Sinks, and 8.5 tons of standard armor (136 factor) all do a fanatatic job design wise. Fluff from the Capellan spy angle is solid bud but ultimately I liked other designs better. Sorry!

11.  HER-4ME (Abele)
A modern replacement for the 'Mercury Elite' which I liked with an advanced EndoSteel structure, 11 (22) Double Heat Sinks, and 8.5 tons of standard armor (136 factor). Very similar to Ice Hellion's Dark Shadows varaint which was also armed with an ER Large Laser. While I liked the range and the firepower was better than the old Autocannon/5 it still doesn't have the knock out potential of the PPC or Blazer. This is primarily why both landed here. The two Medium Pulses, a Flamer, and a Guardian ECM Suite round out the weaponry and equipment which liked. The 280 XL (7/11) Engine along with Jump Jets (6) are really nice movement wise as well. All around solid but I just liked other designs better.

10. HER-5TA (Ice Hellion)
A possible new build based on the 5T which I like better than a refit although it does have a tendency to run hot. The Blazeris a solid replacement for the AC/5 and I like the addition of the Guardian ECM Suite. Retaining the Medium Laser, the Flamer and the 10 (20) Double Heat Sinks is fine but then came the movement. Going with a 240 XL (6/9) Engine with Jump Jets (6) and a MASC (12) was a bit much for me. I would have preferred picking either the MASC (my choice more heat friendly) or Jump Jets but not both. I get that all those movement options could be advantageous but more focus could have gonna a ways here. More heat sinks may have provided for a killer design or maybe another piece of equipment may have done better. In any event the EndoSteel structure and the 8.5 tons of standard armor (136 factor) were top notch.

9. HER-4M (Abele)
This Eagle Corps variant with the ability to headcap opponents was pretty good and I really liked your CBD corporate mention as the Blazer manufacturer. I didn't love the secondary weaponry, however, with two Medium Pulses and a Flamer supporting the Blazer. I geuss the main weapon is good against Mechs while the rest is good against conventional forces but I think they are too short ranged. Glad you added a Double Heat Sink for a total of 11 (22) cause it can run hot with a +5 overheat on a running Alpha Strike. Very solid other than that with the Standard chassis being outfitted with a 280 XL (7/11) Engine, and 7 tons of ferro fibrous (125 factor). Good job bud but you were unfortunately upstaged by other entries.

8. HER-5T (Ice Hellion)
A simple refit of the HER-5S (canon 3050 upgrade) which swaps the Ultra AC/5 for a Blazer, goes back to a regular old Medium Laser instead of a Pulse, and adds a MASC (12). The last, the MASC, is not such a simple upgrade and could present difficulties in refit. Keeping the 240 (6/9) Engine and the Flamer works fine and the EndoSteel chassis is available with the 5S, so no problems there. The 10 (20) Double Heat Sinks work pretty well with a running Alpha Strike only going 4 over heat and 7.5 tons of standard armor (120 factor) make for pretty solid protection. This one is my favorite of your three bud cause it was focused but unfortunately like so many others here I thought others were better.

7. HER-5S (Bradshaw)
This custom order for Eridani Light Horse is certainly intriguing with many different capabalities. Using an advanced EndoSteel chassis along with a 280 XL (7/11) Engine and a MASC (14) it can certainly move. Like the ER PPC for its firepower and range as a great replacement for the AC/5 and two Medium Lasers work well in support. Two Small Pulses and the signature Flamer seem to be intended for anti-infantry work. Firing this all in an Alpha Strike manner is unlikely and unwise with only 10 (20) Double Heat Sinks. Bracketing fire is probably the best way to operate this machine. Then there is the sophisticated electronics which includes a TAG for spotting and a Guardian ECM Suite, not bad. Seven and a half tons of standard armor (120 factor) provides good protection. It can be a fast sniper, a spotter, or an infantry killer which is cool but not sure if it could be made at this time thanks to the 3rd Marik Civil War.

6. HER-4ME (drakensis)
I may have liked this design if I knew about its existence but since I can't confirm or deny the fact that it may or may not have been posted for this contest all I can officially say is no comment. Seriously loved the tongue and check fluff plus the design featuring an EndoSteel chassis, a 280 XL (7/11) Engine, 10 (20) Double Heat Sinks, and
7 tons of ferro fibrous (125 factor) with CASE is pretty freaking good. Utilizing an Ultra AC/5 (40), three Medium Lasers, Flamer, and a Guardian ECM Suite it is pretty well equipped. However, it just missed the near miss bar as others beat ya out.

NEAR MISSES

5. HER-5M (Bradshaw)
An interesting mix of the old and new from Irian BattleMech Unlimited on Irian which avoids heat build up thanks to its Large Laser combo. With one ER Large Laser and one Large Laser you have nice reach, if not solid firepower, which works well. Like that combo alot especially in concert with 11 (22) Double Heat Sinks which cools the machine superbly. The EndoSteel structure and the 7.5 tons of ferro-fibrous (134 factor) works well along with the old 240 (6/9) Engine. A MASC (12) makes this Hermes II even faster although it may complicate refits of exist models. Not a huge concern as this Marik fast moving harasser would be a nice asset for the Free Worlds League. Again others beat you out - sorry bud - interesting concept though.

4. HER-4M (drakensis)
This new build from Irian BattleMech Unlimited for the FWLM was intended as a sniper thanks to it ER PPC. I like this weapon for the Hermes II as it replaces the old AC/5 or the new Ultra AC/5 with superior range and firepower even though it runs a bit hot. Don't love the Medium Pulse and Flamer with the big lightning cannon though as their close ranges negate any support possibilities. Cooling these weapons are  10 (20) Double Heat Sinks which do a pretty good job even though running Alpha Strikes will stress the system. An EndoSteel chassis is a plus but I would have expected either an XL Engine or Ferro Fibrous here as well cause we got the internal space. Probably would keep the 240 (6/9) Engine for lower cost and higher durability but the 7.5 tons of standard armor (120 factor) could be near maxed if ferro-fibrous was used. Not bad at all, just three better in my opinion.

3. HER-6S (Irose)
A nice fix to TRO3050 variant by Irian BattleMechs Unlimited (Irian and Shiro) which is usually a winner for me. Gone is the Medium Pulse replaced by the Medium Laser and the Double Heat Sinks, which were pointless, are replaced by ten Single Heat Sinks. Solid changes which were added to by the addition of seven tons of ferro fibrous (125 factor) with CASE which protects the now two ton ammunition bay of the Ultra AC/5, also an improvement. Remaining are the EndoSteel chassis, the 240 (6/9) Engine, and the Flamer which is all good. I like it but this design just came up a little short for me. It is better true but I don't love the Ultra AC/5 especially in relation to the other weapons. So I am really sorry bud, you got the bronze but finish just outisde the winner's circle. Good try.

WINNERS

2. HER-5LM (Takiro)
My Liao-Marik refit to aid Isis in her quest to become Captain-General of the Free Worlds League was inspired by drakensis HER-4S. A foreign upgrade of a Marik design this one is a pure combatant armed with a Blazer and two Medium Lasers. Solid firepower even though it runs a little hot with 10 (20) Double Heat Sinks which results on a 4 overheat on a running Alpha Strike. The Standard chassis and 240 (6/9) Engine provide a solid core which is protected by seven and a half tons of ferro fibrous (134 factor). Good enough for the silver medal and just barely making it into the winner's circle.

1. HER-3S (masterarminas)
This is the way the Hermes II should have been at its 3050 optimal with a LB 10-X AC (20) serving as its main weapon which complements its other weapons and equipment. Suddenly the Flamer makes a bunch of sense with the Medium Laser supporting them both linked to a Beagle Active Probe. This Marik vanguard is a true scout leader and a great point 'Mech for any FWLM lance at this time. An EndoSteel chassis and a 280 XL (7/11) Engine provide a great core for the Hermes and ten Single Heat Sinks cool it well. Seven tons of ferro fibrous (125 factor) with CASE provide superior protection for it as well. Top marks to the gold medalist and congrats to masterarminas on the win!

Congratulation MasterArminas.

And Takiro, for this design and its role in the Marik force, I had made the choice of an around mobility as it provides you with an edge in combat but I see what you mean (we have each our own ways).

For the MASC, I checked and for me and officially (https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,26083.msg600434.html), it is a class C to a class D refit, meaning one made during maintenance times.

Wow, I would think a MASC would be much more difficult then place and plug. I would have thought all sorts of myomer adjustments would have to be made for compatibility sake but I guess not.

I agree with you about the AC/5 Ultra - it is my least favorite weapon from the SL era.  That said I used it because replacing it with anything else made the design feel like one of the Clint variants without jump jets.  The AC/5 Ultra at least made the mech feel like a Hermes II.

I understand what you are saying Irose. I think the Ultra AC/5 has a place on Mechs perhaps like the Rifleman but with the Hermes II the LB 10-X AC just made so much sense to me. I feel like the canon Hermes II is a light hitting harasser at best with a mish mash of weapons to cover long, medium, and short ranges. It seems more formidable to me with these two Salient Horizon variants something needed for the 3rd Marik Civil War.
