Optimizing the Hunchback

Contest number twenty-five is a pretty tough road to hoe thanks to my HBK-6K Hunchback (posted below) which I consider the optimal Hunchback (featuring an AC/20) of the time with the technology at hand. Some of you may dare try to overcome this hard charger but there are also many Swayback variants which go away from the AC/20 and the traditional Hunchback look. You could also jump on board the 6K train to add some fun fiction or variants of that too but as always that choice remains yours. I really like this design even though my player characters never really used it in game play and I am very curious to see how you guys will improve on it for the Salient Horizon setting.

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday August 28th, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

Overview:
Focusing on pilot safety and making effective use of lostech the HBK-5M Hunchback debuted in 3046. While meeting all FWLM design specs many were disappointed by the new model’s lackluster performance. Excess Double Heat Sinks were the subject of many critiques which often pointed out the impossibility of overheating due to engine damage or repeated inferno round attacks. The presence of superfluous ‘freezers’ wouldn’t have been so bad if it wasn’t for the tiny ammunition load that the model possessed for its main gun. With only five rounds available for combat thanks to its single ton of ammo many Mechwarriors joked the 5M was safer for pilots, their opponents! Even the advanced tech Sunglow Prism-Optic Small Pulse Laser drew criticism for its insignificant short-range punch.
These drawbacks proved minor compared to the rise of long range weaponry like the Gauss Rifle and ER PPC which threatened to make the AC/20 obsolete. This was true at least for slow moving BattleMechs like the Hunchback which had difficultly closing range with faster XL Engine opponents fitted with distant hard-hitting firepower. The Clan Invasion and FedCom efforts to optimize their individual war machines in its wake threatened to make this venerable war machine and its main weapon increasing inconsequential on the modern battlefield. As the Marik Civil War began there were already several design proposals to address these problems. So, when Guardian Hestor Hepburn-Marik of Kalidasa wanted a deterrent against possible Lyran adventurism engineers from Kali Yama stepped forward with what would become the new 6K.

Capabilities:
The focus of the entire concept was to improve this venerable trooper’s rate of movement without degrading its toughness or raw firepower. While an Extra Light (XL) Engine promised greater speeds with lighter weight cores they were far bulkier and much costlier which made them somewhat of a liability. These cumbersome power plants also intruded on side torso space which would affect the placement of the Kali Yama Big Bore Autocannon/20. Thankfully engineers found the solution to this dilemma with the old Magna 250 Fusion Engine from the TBT-5N Trebuchet was on hand and readily available. This standard larger engine also had the added benefit of incorporating all ten Double Heat Sinks saving valuable internal space for advanced weight saving materials which would make the final product possible. Nine and half tons of Aldis Heavy Ferro-Fibrous developed for a new design still years away from production provided the maximum protection for this fifty-ton BattleMech. Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE) located in the Left Torso was retained from the 5M to help mitigate any internal explosions during combat. The only component that would have to be newly manufactured was the Crucis Type VI Deluxe EndoSteel structure upon which the BattleMech would be built. Thanks to some foreign investment and the new TBT-7M Trebuchet chassis this obstacle would be overcome relatively painlessly. Even the larger three-ton gyroscope required to balance the new design was relatively easy to obtain thanks again to the Trebuchet. The weaponry remained largely unchanged with the exception of the additional Hellion V Medium Laser which replaced the head mounted Sunglow Prism-Optic Small Pulse Laser. Even with this upgrade the design still runs cool during the most strenuous combat situations with coolant to spare thanks to the Double Heat Sinks. The only other addition was one more ton of autocannon ammunition which augmented the staying power of the faster Hunchback’s main gun.

Deployment:
Since the new HBK-6K Hunchback was funded in part by Tai-sho Isoroku Kurita of the Draconis Combine a portion of production was slated for the Dieron Regulars. During the Marik Civil War all new models went to the Silver Hawks and 31st Marik Militia as Guardian Hestor Hepburn-Marik and Tai-sho Kurita agreed. Rumor has it the 6K designation was bestowed for the twin K (Kalidasa and Kurita) creators of this Hunchback. Its performance in combat has thus far been impressive surprising opponents with its speed and toughness. Closing much quicker than older models the 6K has devastated unwary adversaries who were under the impression it could not close distance. Those who made that mistake have not survived to tell about it.

Variant:
A future theoretical variant could drop the Ferro Fibrous armor and return to its original armor plating making way for a Triple Strength Myomer. This model would have to downgrade the head mounted Medium Laser back to the original Small Laser as well and return to ten single Heat Sinks enabling the design to ‘overheat’ and activate its new myomers. Simulations show this future variant would be even faster than the new 6K.

In a rare move by a major arms supplier, Kali Yama Industries actually responded to the complaints coming from the Mechwarriors that were assigned to the HBK-5M Hunchback. The lack of ammunition for the Kali Yama Big Bore auto-cannon was the simplest of fixes. So simple that those responsible for the original design have been sacked and replaced by younger more adaptive engineers. The three superfluous double heat sinks were removed and replaced with two extra tons of ammunition for the Big Bore. An added bonus was the addition of a rear-mounted small pulse laser to discourage attacks from the rear. The Hunchback now has sufficient ammo for its main weapon should it ever be lucky to get close to the enemy to use it.

The new engineering team assigned to future Hunchback projects went to work immediately and set about work on a design that did not use the ammo-dependent Big Bore. The obvious replacement was an energy based weapon that had the ability to defeat the enemy with one shot just like the old Big Bore. The answer was the oft neglected Binary Laser Cannon, or Blazer, produced by CBD Industries deep in the Free Worlds League. It has greater range the Big Bore and enough power to remove the armor from the cockpit of any Mech and penetrate deep into the Mech. To give it even more tactical flexibility, the Mech is powered by a new Magna 250 XL fusion engine. This increases top speed by 33 percent allowing to keep pace with the newest heavy Mechs in current production. To make up for the short-range destructive power of the Big Bore, an Artemis IV FCS-equipped SRM6 launcher and a pair of new medium pulse laser have also been added. The two Hellion V medium lasers carry over from the original Hunchback. A total of thirteen double heat sinks do their best to keep the heat of the energy weapons under control while 10.5 tons of standard armor keep the Mech and its pilot well protected.

The HBK-5N Hunchback is another design coming from Kali Yama and is a modern take on the HBK-4N model that first saw life as a field refit. It uses the same powerplant found in Kali Yama's new HBK-5B proposal but retains the standard chassis (unlike the HBK-5B). The original AC/5 has been replaced by an Ultra model built Imperator Weaponry with one ton of ammunition. All of the energy weapons have been replaced by three Priestly 600P medium pulse lasers. The LRM10 launcher has been retained to give the pilot long-range options. The ten double heat sinks are more than sufficient to handle the heat generated by the weapons. The armor protection remains the same with some of the front torso armor shifted to the rear for better protection from attacks from behind.

Desinger's Note: Screw what TPTB say, I'm designing a Hunchie that can use a Gauus!


While the Draconis Combine still lacked a facility1 that could produce the Gauss Rifle, they still had a source courtesy of the Free Worlds League. This allowed the engineers at Luthien Armor Works' new factory on Abiy Adi to design a medium weight 'Mech featuring the most powerful weapon available to the armed forces of the Inner Sphere. When initial applications lead to multiple incident in which the Mech toppled to ground after firing the new weapon. LAW engineers went to work to solve the problem. After several tension-filled weeks they came upon a solution. It was neither novel nor difficult. They changed the mounting location from high on the torso down to a position just above the waist. Much like how the auto-cannon on the Orion is mounted. After a dozen test shots, the only side effect was a twisting of the torso rearwards with no toppling or balance effects. There's was much joy and drinking of sake by the engineers whey their solution worked. The 'hunchbacked' aesthetic is now gone with the new location of the main weapon, but rest of the chassis is still reminiscent of the original Hunchback

The Imperator Dragon's Fire Gauss rifle is fed by a two-ton magazine and is mounted CASE protected torso. Additional weaponry consists of a quintet of a variety of Victory Industries-produced lasers. 10.5 tons of standard is more than sufficient to keep the new Hunchback on the field. The only constraint appears to be when the ammo runs out.

ComGuards has been desperate to replace all of the materiel lost during the Battle of Tukaayyid and some would believe that these two new Hunchback variants could help answer their Battlemech shortages. Both are optimized for close quarters combat and tactical mobility. Both variants come equipped with a 200XL fusion engine and four jump jets. Both are armed with a pair of large lasers a brace of SRM launchers and Guardian ECM suite. The main difference between the two is that the HBK-SP2 is equipped with ER large laser and triple strength myomers, while the HBK-5SP has larger SRM racks and Artemis IV fire control systems.

The Mini-line of Hunchbacks began as an in house project to imitate other House's favored Heavy and Assault designs as trial pieces against Coventry produced designs in battlefield conditions. It was discovered shortly after the conversion to the newer Endo Steel internal structure that many of the more favored designs weapons loads could be outfitted on the traditional Hunchback frame. Produced originally in just small numbers as the situation warranted, the popularity amongst many of the test pilots was overlooked until one of the public relations directors was giving a tour to visiting AFFC brass and instead of the prototype design that was being showcased the Hunchback variants stole the show. When questions arose on why these models weren't being offered for sale Coventry Metal Works realized that they had an opportunity in their hands. Retooling their Hunchback production took just a short amount of time and the newly coined pint sized assault 'mechs began being advertised.

Two designs that were submitted to the Lyran Command's Division of Logistics and Procurement nearly simultaneously. The first comes from Norse-Storm Battlemechs and is based on the HBK-4H variant of the venerable Hunchback. Modern upgrades abound as the engine and armor take advantage of the technology found in the Helm Core. A new 250 XL fusion engine gives this Hunchie greater speed while the ferro-fibrous armor allows for the same protection at a lighter weight. The old Class 10 auto-cannon has been replaced by a new LB 10-X clustergun from Defiance Industries. This new gun is backed up by a variety of standard and pulse laser. Norse-Storm plans to build this Mech at their Loxley facility and have informed the LCAF that their Solaris 7 facility will be submitting a new design as well, once certain 'legal' hurdles have been cleared.

Coventry Metal Works has also submitted an upgraded version of a common Hunchback variant, the LRM-equipped HBK-4J. The new HBK-5J shares the new 250XL and ferro-fibrous armor of the HBK-5H while being a straightforward upgrade. The twin LRM10s now feature Artemis IV FCS guidance packages. There is a total of four tons of ammunition for the launchers. Matched pairs of standard and pulsed medium laser provide the close range fire support for this Mech.
