Optimizing the Javelin
« on: September 20, 2019, 10:37:13 PM »

Our fifth InnerSphere BattleMech to undergo optimization is the thirty-ton Javelin, a favorite of the House Davion. It reminds me a lot of our last contest, the Commando, right down to its name not evoking a connection to the ‘Mech. I probably utilized it a little more in my home gaming scenarios though but I don’t have any custom designs handy for this one. Less competition for you guys I guess but hopefully we will toon it up to the max in order to defeat the Clans. Again, I couldn’t find a ‘Mech of the Week Article on the Javelin so I will link us up with the BattleTech wiki page.

Optimal Design Thoughts on the Javelin

Role. The Javelin, like the Commando, is a small unit which relies on massed short to medium ranged firepower to destroy its opponents. Curiously though it is not referred to as a ‘striker’ but rather a recon asset which is really sneaky. An excellent ambusher the AFFS uses it to anchor scout lances or create mobile fire support lances. Also referred to as sturdy and reliable war machine that has served with distinction on the battlefield. Apparently eclipsed by the Commando and the Valkyrie as the standard Light Mechs of the Federated Commonwealth probably because of no active production.

Factories. None [2]
[DESTROYED] Caph (Stormvanger Assemblies, Light Division) Terran Hegemony
First built in 2751 as an export to member-state militaries this plant was destroyed in 2774 during the SLDF’s liberation of Caph.
[FUTURE] Panpour (Jalastar Aerospace) Federated Commonwealth/ Davion
In 3055, this company began producing Davion’s favored light BattleMech design, the JVN-10P Javelin, in accordance with AFFC High Command request.

Internal Structure. The three-ton Duralyte 246 chassis was only in production for twenty-three years but many have apparently survived the Succession Wars till this day. This means that the newest chassis around is pushing 280 years of age which speaks volumes in its own right about its rugged dependability. Presumably a fair deal of maintenance has been done just to keep these machines in the field but I suppose someone working hard on a ‘handmade’ model could have believable generated a handful more during the Succession Wars. Unfortunately, the new factory on Panpour isn’t up and running yet so EndoSteel might be out of the question to begin with but I suppose a good enough story might be able to justify it. In future canon Corean Model KL83 Endo Steel was used for a new and improved Javelin frame so it is doable a few years down the road anyway.

Engine. With the GM 180 Fusion Engine being called one of the most reliable power plants in existence it is tough to advocate any change for the Javelin. Able to cruise around at 64 kph with a maximum speed of 97 kph or 6/9 movement rate in game terms meets my minimum requirements for a Light BattleMech. However, thanks to the Hatchetman a 180 XL Engine also exists at this time which could allow more mass to go to improving armor or adding weapons and equipment. It also looks like the GM 180 XL Fusion Engine was made on Talcott eventually for an advanced Javelin variant manufactured on Panpour.

Jump Jets. The Javelin is a mobile BattleMech thanks to its six Rawlings 95 Jump Jets. I would say in most cases these are integral but a few existing canon variants which do not feature these lift aids. My preference is to probably include them but you could make a good argument for a non-jumper.

Heat Sinks. With a 180 Fusion Engine you can mount 7 Heat Sinks as an integral part of the power plant’s interior but 3 other base Heat Sinks have to be mounted within the Javelin itself. Going Double means you’ll eat up a minimum of 9 more critical spaces which might be tough fit if you use EndoSteel or Ferro-Fibrous not to mention an XL Engine. As it is with the base SRM weaponry the Javelin isn’t exactly a high heat monster but jumping can change that equation so perhaps a doubling is in order.

Cockpit & Gyro. While the cockpit of the Javelin will not be changing in any event the two-ton gyroscope might go up in mass if you try to make it any faster.

Armor. This 30-ton Mech has a 105 maximum armor factor and with 6.5 tons of standard armor a near max 104 armor factor could be generated. Not bad. InnerSphere Ferro-Fibrous (x 1.12) brings you slightly over max factor with 6 tons of that advanced armor generating a 108 factor. I don’t like wasting armor points but 5.5 tons only gets you to a 99 armor factor. In any event ferro-fibrous is only gonna save you a half a ton or a ton at most. I’d rather go with EndoSteel but Ferro-Fibrous is far more available and easier to refit existing models.

Weapons & Equipment. While the SRM batteries remind me of the Commando it is repeatedly said the Javelin is a sneaky scout so how about an Active Probe or ECM Suite? Even a TAG could be appropriate for this scout. The Fire Javelin which mounts a lot of Medium Lasers could be another way to go here as well.

Design Criteria
Design: Javelin Light BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 30 tons
Cockpit: (3 tons)

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. I've also become a fan of massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries (Free Worlds League in particular has gone in this direction) which could provide closer equivalents to Clan LRMs. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

The Javelin seems to be a Davion BattleMech but serves in other Successor States as well so it is possible that other variants exist per nationality. Certainly, the Federated Commonwealth might help spread the design to the Lyran side of that great alliance. Let us also not forget that the Steiner-Davions employ a lot of mercenaries so I can easily see a few major units utilizing this premier Light Mech. I’d say both the Draconis Combine (House Kurita) and the Capellan Confederation (House Liao) could have salvaged their fair share of Javelins during the Succession Wars. Their militaries could feature a Javelin or two but the Free Worlds League might be the rarest user of the Javelin. Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting.

I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday October 4, 2019 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full seven days for this contest, good luck!!

Jalastar Aerospace and Achernar Battlemechs, separately, have developed a simple upgrade kit for the Javelin battlemech as there are significant numbers in service with the AFFC and mercenary units affiliated with the Federated Commonwealth. The only bit of Lostech in this upgrade kit is four tons of Ferro-fibrous armor that replaces the standard armor. This application allows for ten percent increase in overall protection. The weapons are all replaced and combine aspects of the JVN-10n and the JVN-10F while providing long range firepower with the addition of an LRM5 launcher. Two medium lasers and an SRM4 launcher provide the short range arsenal that the Javelin is known for. The first customers for this upgrade kit were the Lexington Combat Group and the Wild Geese mercenary group.

Targeting and Tracking System: Dynatec 128C with Corean Sync Lock

Overview:
While Stormvanger Assemblies had been destroyed in 2774, the large number of Javelins in the AFFS required a supply of spare parts and following the First Succession War, Jalastar Aerospace had received the contract for this. A steady supply of components allowed the AFFS to operate Javelins well after other states found theirs useful for little more than scrap.

With advanced technology returning to the battlefield and the return of the Clans, Jalastar decided to market a simple upgrade package - although differing specifications ultimately led to two distinct packages being made available.

Both of the JVN-10D packages replace the original StarGuard I protection with a layer of ArchShield Maxi IV ferrofibrous armour, which Jalastar had ready for use on an under-development urban combat vehicle. This provides the equivalent of almost half a ton of additional armour.

The JVN-10D1 simply replaces the original SRM-6 launchers with artemis-guided SRM-4 launchers, the improved guidance making up for smaller volleys and extending ammunition endurance - important on a design that has no energy weapons.

The JVN-10D2 also uses artemis-guidance but turns the design into a light fire support unit with a pair of LRM 5 launchers. While under-armed compared to a Valkyrie, the increased mobility helps it support light units that a Valkyrie might not be able to keep up with.

Both refit packages have been picked up by the AFFC and sold extensively to the mercenary market via Outreach.

Overview:
Nimakachi Fusion Products had never manufactured the Javelin, but they did manufacture the similarly sized Spider and when the FWLM offered a contract in 3051 to explore rebuilding the large number of currently unserviceable Javelin chassis they had in storage from the early Succession Wars, Nimakachi's engineer saw the chance to explore the options for their new SDR-7M Spider on the Javelin.

What began as a testbed turned into a limited production run of Javelins, mostly shipped to the Draconis Combine. Negotiations for licensing of further production are currently deadlocked between Nimakachi, Jalastar Aerospace and the heirs of Stormvanger Assemblies with the political pressure that allowed initial production using 'original' chassis lessened with the Clans halted at Tukkayid.

The JVN-10MP is a very different beast from its predecessor with a completely different skeleton and subtantially reinforced armour. While sophisticated electronics make it far more suited to the traditional scout role, Nimakachi's Javelin has paid a price in weapon payload with the four lasers (obtained from scrapped Galleon light tanks) comparing poorly to the original SRM racks.

Spider pilots using the JVN-10MP are less concerned by the lack of firepower and more by the relatively poor mobility. The armour protection has been well received however so it's possible that if Nimakachi can obtain a license that they'll be able to market the JVN-10MP to militias along the League's periphery border.

Re: Optimizing the Javelin
« Reply #4 on: September 23, 2019, 03:49:13 PM »

I wasn't planning to do a variant of the Javelin but then this idea came into my head.

The JBN-12ELH is an experimental upgrade to the Javelin that was developed jointly by the Eridani Light Horse technicians and engineers from the New Avalon Institute of Science.  As part of their recent contract with the Federated Commonwealth, the ELH was to receive access to some of the new technologies being rushed into service.  While a few Mechs were provided, the ELH mainly received advanced weapons which were retrofitted on to their mechs.  In the case of the Javelin, the NAIS offered to help with the refit.  It is unclear exactly why the NAIS engineers offered to help with this upgrade but rumors abound that the Federated Suns is seeking to put the Javelin back into production and this upgrade may be intended as a test bed for the new Federated Commonwealth model. Whatever the reason, the new Javelin has been returned to service and is expected to see action soon.

The ELH chose to upgrade the Javelin used by Mechwarrior Lidwine Hesselgesser who serves in the 4th Recon Company of the 6th Recon Battalion in the 151st Light Horse.  Originally a JVN-10N, the new -12ELH model has more in common with the -10F Fire Javelin.  Removing both of the SRM launchers, the engineers were able to replace them with a pair of BlazeFire Sweetshot extended range lasers.  These heavy guns provide the Javelin with a much stronger weapon, that can hit the enemy at longer ranges.  The large size of the weapons took up significant space in the torso, to accommodate the weapons, the design team replaced the GM 180 fusion engine with the smaller Omni 150 that is commonly used on the Valkyrie.  Since so much of the mech had to be modified to fit the Omni 150 engine, the design team decided to strip off the old Star Guard 1 armor and replaced it with the StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous armor used on the Valkyrie.  This provides the Javelin with improved protection for the same mass.  The last change made to the Javelin was to upgrade the coolent system to use the new developed double heat sinks.  With so much heat generated by the extended range lasers, it was necessary to make this change, otherwise Javelin would face a potential shutdown every time it fired it's weapons.

It is worth noting that when the design team was laying out the new armor and weapon configuration they made every effort to retain the look of the old JVN-10N.  The BlazeFire Sweetshot is designed to not need a barrel, instead it is mounted in the torso of the Javelin so that it looks like one of the tubes for the SRM launcher typically found on the Javelin (albeit a slighter larger then normal SRM tube).  The result is that is very hard for enemies to determine if they are fighting a JVN-10N or the new -12ELH, fully keeping with the Javelins reputation for being sneaky.

Overview:
While most of the remaining Javelins were in the hands of the Great Houses, ComStar also had a number within their stockpiles on Terra. During the preparations to face the Clans, Precentor Martial Focht had the Mechs re-activated with one simple modification.

In pace of the original SRM racks, the Javelins were fitted with a pair of Narc beacon launchers. While this left them entirely unarmed (except for their actual arms), this gave the ComGuard pilots a very good chance of locking a beacon onto one of the Clan Mechs.

During the Battle of Tukkayid, the Javelins were assigned as the sixth 'Mech in many Level II units on the frontlines. While the rest of their unit engaged a Clan Star, the Javelin would wait and then launch their beacons at damaged Clan Mechs, marking them for fire from hidden LRM units.

This tactic helped considerably during the early stages, although many outraged Clan warriors got off enough shots to damage or destroy the Javelins before they fell. By the time Clan Wolf landed, they were well briefed on this approach and had in any case abandoned zellbrigen. As a result, the JVN-10C Javelins were priority targets and very few survived the battle.

While not commonly seen the 10k is a variant found amongst the Draconis Combine with their captured Javelins. It combines the 10N and 10F weapons loads into a new one. Utilizing little in the way of LosTech. It upgrades the armor to Ferro Fibrous for an increase in its protection. Swapping out one of its SRM6 launchers and having to shift the remaining one to the center to assist the gyro in its new balance. Twin Medium Lasers fill out its weapons layout and the new C3 Slave has been added to assist lance maneuvers.  Double Heat Sinks have been added to allay any heat concerns the design may have.

Continuing with the captured and refitted variants brings us a completely different look with the 10L. Oddly enough the design is more like a Valkyrie variant than a Javelin one. It totally departs from the traditional load of the Davion Javelin. Stripping out both SRM6s and ammo it instead utilizes an ER Large and LRM5 for harassing purposes. Using Double Heat Sinks again to allay heat concerns, this variant is able to stay in the field with its main weaponry much longer than its compatriot variants.

Two variants recently being seen are rumored to be test beds for what some believe to be the first new production runs of the Javelin in nearly 250 years. The labeled 11X and 12X variants seen in limited action versus the Clans both utilize energy based weaponry completely changing the traditional look and feel of the Javelin.

The 11X is very similar to the 10F but with the ability to use newer technology in the case of Double Heat Sinks its able to increase the armor layout as well as its damage potential while able to maintain comfortable conditions for the pilot in all but the most extreme conditions.

The 11X is outlier of the configurations with its entirely new look and feel. Plus its exorbitant price increase makes it the more difficult choice for the number crunchers. With the survival rate of light Mech's vs the Clans being in the teens the 11X is twice the cost of the 10X. While the budgetary office would prefer the 10X the military commanders would prefer the 11X. With an increase in speed but a loss in maneuverability the 11X utilizes as much of the newer technologies as possible. With the larger Pitban 240XL commonly seen on Davion Rifleman the 11X is able to increase its armor factor as well as being able to mount the larger ER PPC. Utilizing as well the new MASC again gives a tactical speed increase doubling its overall speed from the 10N variant. Time will tell which variant ultimately chosen by the FC High Command.

Did those others a week or two ago, but now thinking about it here's another I just did

With the order from the First Prince for the construction of a new Javelin Production center ideas have been flying everywhere around the design room for the new and upgraded design for the wildly popular Javelin scout 'Mech while many new and exciting ideas have been thrown around and even experimental models produced. One man in the design room who actually once pilot the design came up with his own solution. Keeping with the traditional weaponry of the design Paul Casio decided to limit the introduction of newer technologies until such time as they proved needed. Downgrading the twin SRM6s to SRM4s and conceiving the notion of a new Endo Steel Structure the design to keep to its name sake and add additional LRM 5s for a longer strike to harass until entering short range. Slightly lowering the jump capabilities allowed for an increase in armor protection as well as the introduction of CASEs to the design to ensure the survivability of experienced Davion MechWarriors.

Designed and built by Coventry Metal Works, the JVN-10S Javelin uses the same engine that is used VT-5S Vulcan giving it a top speed in excess of 120 kph while maintaining its 180 meters. An endo-steel structure frees up enough tonnage to mount 6.5 tons of standard armor and leaves enough weight for two medium lasers, a medium pulse laser and a Streak SRM2 launcher. This increase in speed allows this new Javelin to keep pace with most of the light Clan Mech, even though the weapons are not quite on par with their new enemies,

This a Capellan refit of a captured Javelin and features the engine from the modern Raven. The 210XL gives the javelin increased and a added jump jet gives it greater jumping range to 210 meters. Matched pairs of medium lasers and Streak SRM2s provide the main firepower which is backed up by a small pulse laser. 4.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor protect the ancient skeletons. The inclusion of perfected triple-strength myomers gives this Mech an added burst of speed when needed to close with the enemy or withdraw hen the situation has become dire. The Guardian ECM units keep the enemy from hitting the Capellan Javelin, which is called Biāoqiāng by the engineers at the Hellespont Mechworks on Sian.

Built by Jalastar Aerospace on Panpour in conjunction with their upgrade kit, this model uses a 180XL to bring the free weight down. An ER large is the main weapon and it is backed up an Artemis IV-equipped SRM and a medium laser. 5.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor keep this Mech well protected,

JVN-11S JAVELIN

Mass: 30 tons
Chassis: Duralyte 246
Power Plant: Edasich Motors 180 XL
Cruising Speed: 64 kph
Maximum Speed: 97 kph
Jump Jets: Rawlings 95
Jump Capacity: 180 meters
Armor: StarGuard I with CASE
Armament: 5 Holly Streak SRM-2s
Manufacturer: Lycomb-Davion IntroTech
   Primary Factory: New Avalon
Communications System: Garret T-10B
Targeting and Tracking System: Dynatec 128C

OVERVIEW
Scientists in the InnerSphere have long been researching the Streak SRM-4 and the Streak SRM-6 prior to the appearance of Clan technology. Modern day efforts began when Streak technology was recovered in 3035 by continued examination of the Helm Memory Core. Since that time researchers from all the Great Houses have labored to enlarge the Streak SRM-2 into SRM-4 and SRM-6 racks. Fledgling Steiner and Davion efforts were combined at NAIS following the War of 3039 as the research team joke goes ‘two Great Houses are better than one.’ This New Avalon based project was handsomely funded and unlike other efforts at the time got some money for a showcase ‘Mech design. While some argued for the Commando to be this testbed the heavier Javelin won out as a better choice for high tech enhancements. While difficulties in scaling up the Streak SRM guidance remained a few JVN-10S debuted on AFFC Proving Grounds just before the Clan Invasion.

CAPABILITIES
Engineers used existing JVN-10N models to create this new Javelin armed with five Holly Streak SRM-2s. Made by Lycomb-Davion IntroTech these weapon systems are grouped just like the new JVN-10P model. The effective range of these accurate missiles is two hundred seventy meters which remains the same as standard SRM packs. These smaller racks can be interlinked for the identical (maximum) effect if so desired by the Mechwarrior. To make room for these larger missile racks the GM 180 Fusion Engine was replaced with the Edasich Motors 180 XL used on the updated Hatchetman. Double Heat Sinks were also included thanks to the increase in heat generated by the smaller Streaks. These freezers became necessary when a total lock was achieved during Jump Jet maneuvering. One ton of Streak SRM-2 ammunition allows ten rounds of continuous fire by these advanced missile racks. This ammo is further protected by a CASE that serves as a valuable safety feature if critical damage finds these explosive rounds within. This is more difficult thanks to two and a half more tons of StarGuard I armor plating which provides near total protection for this thirty-ton war machine. Much else like the electronics, chassis, jump jets, and general appearance remains completely unchanged. The price tag is far more expensive than the old Javelin thanks to the XL Engine, Double Heat Sinks, and other high-tech devices.

DEPLOYMENT
Refits of this cutting-edge Javelin have been carried out near Lycomb-Davion IntroTech aerospace facility on New Avalon. Rumor has it that this testbed was the basis for the JVN-10P which also debuted in 3049. The Clan Invasion caused the Federated Commonwealth to ramp up production of this Javelin refit for possible frontline service. None arrived to AFFC units before the Truce of Tukayyid halted their advance towards Terra but it has been assigned to specialized raiders who are supposed to see action soon.

VARIANTS
The recently introduced JVN-11D is a very similar refit by Johnston Industries billed as the Davion answer to the Capellan Raven. This New Syrtis product is a Fire Javelin type which uses energy weapons rather than missile racks for its arsenal. It removes the Streak SRMs from the 11S for 5 Medium Lasers and mounts an impressive electronic package including a Guardian ECM, Beagle Active Probe, and a TAG.
