The tenth contest for our optimization of InnerSphere BattleMechs brings us to the Jenner which is synonymous with House Kurita. I have to say despite my first allegiance to the Draconis Combine this was not one of my favorites cause of its fragile nature. Often during this challenges you guys open my eyes to new aspects of each design so I am looking forward to seeing what you can come up with. Optimal Design Thoughts on the Jenner
Role. A hard-striking flanker whose high speed and mid to short range firepower make it a favorite to some.

[DESTROYED] Diplan Mechyards (Ozawa) varied
In operation since 2660 when the MON-66 Mongoose began production this facility catered to the SLDF till the Amaris Coup. This began an extended period of turmoil into which Jenner production began in September 2784. This despite Federated Suns oversight of the planet which continued until 2791 when the Draconis Combine conquered the planet. Despite the hostilities of the 1st Succession War construction continued until 2815 when a shortage of raw materials bought the assembly line to a halt. Diplan continued to produce its Mech chassis until 2823 when full production resumed. Chassis were shipped to a Diplan subsidiary on Luthien for final assembly. This factory was destroyed in 2837 by a nuclear detonation set off by retreating DCMS troops.
Luthien Armor Works (Luthien) Draconis Combine
The modern Jenner line apparently re-opened here in 3046 after Gunji-no-Kanrei Theodore Kurita made it a top priority. This is the first manufacturing line operational since 2848 which may be related to the mention of warship bombardment damaging the Luthien line but there is a lot of conflicting information here.
Internal Structure. The JR7-D featured the three and half ton Diplan Scout-A internal structure which is the same as the Alshain Class 48 chassis found on the lostech JR7-K. Unfortunately there is a missed opportunity here for EndoSteel which was apparently deliberate in order ‘to preserve the core advantages of the original Jenner.’ However, the Wolf Trap chassis produced at Luthien Armor is EndoSteel so the advanced facilities for the production of this cutting edge materiel are indeed present.
Engine. Magna 245 Fusion Engine that makes the Jenner move at an impressive 7/11 clip across the battlefield is unique. Hard to find another XL model in that rating as it may only service a 35 ton Mech going at 7/11 effectively. So unless you have a couple of 35 tonners using the identical power plant your probably not gonna find common components here. However, justifying the creation of a new 245 XL Engine is plausible to me thanks to the importance of the Jenner to the Draconis Combine and the need to defeat the Clans.
Jump Jets. Five Simthson Lifters enable the Jenner to jump 150 meters at a time and this mobility, while not the maximum allowable, is an asset. Its ground speed is naturally complemented by this agility and as this Light BattleMech serves as a flanker these lift devices are vital. While not required for this contest I would recommend jump jets to all entrants trying to make a better Jenner.
Heat Sinks. Nine out of ten Heat Sinks can be incorporated into the existing 245 Engine and because of that I really can’t believe that designers did not chose to include Double Heat Sinks. A Jumping Alpha Strike from the base model Jenners produced 20 heat exactly which could be perfectly dealt with the inclusion of Double Heat Sinks. Not sure why the JR7-K doesn’t include them as it is relatively straight forward modification.
Cockpit & Gyro. Not much can be done here to improve the performance of the machine given the available level of technology. However, both components are plentiful and have proven to be reliable over time.
Armor. The thirty-five-ton chassis has a max armor factor of 119. Seven tons of armor would be a 112-armor factor while six and half tons of Ferro-Fibrous would be 116 armor factor. Often described as a glass hammer the JR7-D Jenner has four tons of standard plate for a 64 armor factor which really ain’t much. The upgraded JR7-K has even less with three and a half tons of Ferro-Fibrous which is only a 62 armor factor.
Weapons & Equipment. Armed with a SRM-4, which is supplied by ton of ammo (25 salvos), and four Medium Lasers the Jenner has traditionally been a hard charging short range fighter. I am opened to changing things up which could be interesting and of course utilizing the C3 system seems to be catching on here in the Salient Horizon setting.

The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. I've also become a fan of massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries (Free Worlds League in particular has gone in this direction) which could provide closer equivalents to Clan LRMs. Here is a list for your design reference. The main user of the Jenner is the Draconis Combine which sees this Light BattleMech as a symbol of its power. There are a few in service with other Houses but the great majority are in the service of the DCMS. Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. The recovery of lost technology and the Jenner's prominence within the DCMS made it a prime candidate to receive new upgrades, however Luthien Armor Works deliberately avoided any radical changes to preserve the original's core advantages. Hence while the new JR7-K began replacing the earlier model with little fanfare, it wasn't until recently that Jenner pilots began complaining as it was quickly becoming outclassed by other designs using superior technology. Still there was reluctance to make any changes, it wasn’t until recently that the the Gunji-no-Kanrei decided to take the mixed blessing of the Battle of Luthien and the exorbitant amount of Clan salvage to order the complete upgrade of the beloved DCMS design. Hoping to produce their own OmniMech was the target but while the new JR8 Jenners are not true omnimechs they do have some modular upgrades allowing for some solid integrated systems with flexibility in payload options.
Lead by Senior Designer Tohka Yatogami of Luthien Armor Works the Draconis Engineers started from the internal structure and moved out. The design starts with the new Alshain Class 48 Endo Steel while bulky the usage of Endo Steel allowed for an increased load in its weaponry and equipment. Upgrading the speed of the design came next. Utilizing the new VOX 280 XL engine allowed for increase in speed from 118 kph to 129 kph. Keeping up with all but the fastest of Clan OmniMechs. Maintaining the old Smithson Lifters the design team was able to increase its jumping capability by an additional 30 meters. Completely stripping away its communications and targeting systems and upgrading with the newest in technologies with the Sipher Security Plus w/C3 Network and Matabushi Sentinel w/Beagle Active Probe & TAG respectfully. The armor still remains the traditional Starshield blend, though an additional ton and half has been added.
Integrated in all the new variants is the C3 system, Beagle Active Probe and Targeting Acquisition Gear. The new 1-4 variants are all geared for separate roles centered around these electronic systems.
Starting with JR-1 this variant allows for versatility in its weapons package. Blending twin Medium Lasers with equal battery of LRM 5 launchers this variant allows for engaging foes at multiple ranges and providing improved indirect fire support for units within its C3 equipped lance. The JR-2 is more of an urban and short range brawler. Replacing the twin LRM 5s for SRM 4 missile systems. This design is suited for closing the distance with its foes and providing enhanced targeting solutions throughout its lance while able to exploit holes in the enemy 'Mechs with its SRMs. The JR-3 steps away from the missile systems entirely, opting for direct fire support with its ER Large Laser backed again by the twin Medium Lasers. Designed for extended stays in the fields and raids behind enemy lines where the ability to reload is often not an option. Last of the designs and the one least produced is the JR-4 variant opting for increased Lance support functionality it removes the main weaponry systems of the other variants and instead includes a NARC missile system boosting the support of any missile boats in its Lance or outside of it.

Overview:
Although the Jenner had been out of production for over two hundred years, enormous numbers had been built for the DCMS and many remained in service even after the Clan Invasion, with new production having been begun on Luthien in 3046. Upgrading these was a priority for Gunji-no-Kanrei and after the Outreach Conference in 3051 he ordered a refit package to ready the Jenner for modern battlefields.
Capabilities:
The refit package swaps the Jenner's armour for ferro-fibrous armour built on New Samarkand and the four medium lasers for pulse lasers built on Marduk, both factories well away from the Clan border and therefore secure.
The additional protection is very well received given the poor armour of a Jenner and the accuracy of the pulse lasers is extremely valuable in the fast moving fights that the Jenners are usually involved in. While the overall firepower is reduced, the Jenner lacked the heatsinks to make full use of its armament in a sustained fight anyway, and as the Kanrei pointed out to critics, firepower that doesn't hit its target may as well not exist.
Deployment:
The JR-8K upgrade has been widely distributed to the Ryuken, Legions of Vega and Ghost Regiments, all units that benefit from their ties to Theodore Kurita.

Overview:
Luthien Armor Works took advantage of the new detente with the Federated Commonwealth, to contract with Norse-Storm BattleMechs, Inc. of Loxley for some of the Magna 245 XL reactors that they were putting into production in their attempt to bring back the SLDF's Spector light 'Mech.
The JR9-K was a mix of ideas from the JR8-K upgrade package and preparations for the Owens OmniMech that is under development. After several months of squabbling between designers, management of the project was replaced and the new team leader re-focused the work on providing a Jenner that could skirmish but primarily acts as the eyes of a C3-equipped lance.
New Jenners to this specification are beginning to leave LAW's factories and going directly to rebuild units damaged fighting the Clans on Wolcott and Luthien.
Capabilities:
The new Jenners have sophisticated sensors and communications gear, letting them spot and mark targets. In a recon roles they are sometimes partnered with a JR8-K refit, the second Jenner loading Narc-compatible SRMs, and a pair of Whitworths to support them with LRMs. However, full use of the JR9-K will require the use of a C3 network.
Without any SRMs carried, the Jenner needs to use its lasers and in this case the four original medium lasers were retained. With the tonnage freed up by the lighter engine, designers subtantially reinforced armour protection and added two new jump jets - something that Jenner pilots had desired for a long time.
Deployment:
The Sword of Light regiments and the Genyosha are the main recipients of the JR9-K, leaving the design more associated with the traditional units who may undervalue the intent behind it. Hohiro Kurita made a point of having one attached to his command lance so that he can demonstrate its proper use.

Overview:
The second largest user of the Jenner is the AFFC, with many Jenners having fallen into FedSuns and Lyran hands over the course of the Succession Wars. Even such famous units as Delta Company of the Davion Light Guards have made use of it.
As such, refitting the Jenner for their use was a priority for them and the winning contract for a refit package came from Norse-Storm who had entered into a partnership with the heirs to the original production firm. Norse-Storm contribute the engines (having been alerted to the possibility by sales to the Combine), the Federated Commonwealth provided funding and Diplan re-entered the Jenner business by assembling the kits. Whether they will one day be able to build Jenners again on Ozawa remains to be seen.
Capabilities:
The JR8-F uses a mix of standard and pulse lasers as the primary armament, with an upgrade of the original targeting computer managing them and double-heatsinks making the load managable. As a secondary armament the SRM launcher has been replaced with a smaller Streak package.
To avoid complications, the armour is reinforced but doesn't use lighter alloys. The engine replacement is hard enough to carry out, but overall Diplan's new armour schematic pushes what the frame can carry, making the upgraded Jenner a dedicated skirmisher.
Deployment:
The JR8-F has primarily gone to units like the Davion Light Guards that make heavy use of light 'Mechs. Initial shipments were sent to regiments being shifted to face the Clans, although rumour has it that some have also been sent to the Sarna March to assist in covering the border against Capellan adventurism.

I've got three variants for you.
Jenner JR-8A
This is an upgraded version of the JR-7A model of the Jenner and the Large Laser upgraded to an ER model. Armor protection has increased by 25% due to the use of ferro-fibrous armor and an endo-steel structure. A pair of small lasers serve as the only backup weapons. An additional jump jet has been added to this Jenner a jump range of 180 meters. In a rare move, this Kuritan Mech is also fitted with double heat sinks, as all three models are. Due to the location of the large laser being mounted above the cockpit, it is mounted in a blister that allows the laser 30 degrees in either direction. This addition plus the shorter barrel lengthallows the pilot to eject safely (just barely).

Jenner JR-8X
The JR-8X is an experimental model that was in development prior to the Clan invasion and is seen as reconnaissance asset. Featuring the latest in electronic warfare and surveillance equipment. This includes a modern ECM suite and active probe. A C3 slave has been added for greater communications between its lancemates, while a TAG unit allows target designation for the new Arrow IV artillery systems being fielded by the DCMS. With the acquisition of Clan Omnitechnology through salvage from Luthien and Wolcott, it is hoped that this chassis could be developed into a Kuritan OmniMech.

The Jenner is one of the most common light mechs in the Draconis Combine. Since it's introduction it has become a signature mech of the DCMS, filling a variety of roles, from front line combat to scouting and screening missions. One of the few complaints about the Jenner was the SRM ammo bay which seemed to be vulnerable to to combat damage. There were numerous instances of lightly damaged Jenners being destroyed when the Ammo bay was hit by a lucky shot. The original DCMS upgrade to the Jenner solved this problem by protecting the ammo bay with a CASE system. While this solved the explosion problem, it did little to improve the Jenner's performance. As a result the mech found itself outmatched by other designs which took advantage of the recovered Star League technology to improve their performance.
The DCMS issued a call to Luthien Armor Works to develop an improved version of the Jenner. The designers quickly identified 4 areas that could be improved: Firepower, Survivability, Cooling and Electronics. Realizing the extensive changes would take up significant mass, the design team proposed developing a new 245 rated extra light engine. The engine required significant effort to developed but freed up mass for other improvements. The design team looked at various options for the weapon array. It was decided to remove the Thunerstroke SRM Launcher, removing the threat of an ammunition explosion. To replace the SRM the design team looked to the original Jenner and mounted an Extended Range Large Laser. Rather then try to implement the complicated turret, the laser is mounted in the mech's torso. The 4 arm mounted medium lasers have been retained. With the high heat generated by the laser weapons, the new Jenner switches to double strength models.
While the removal of the SRM helped improve the survivability of the Jenner, the designers decided to improve it further by adding additional armor. Mounting 5.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor the JR7-N is the best protected model other then the JR7-F.
The final changes involved upgrades to the mech's electronic systems. To improve the Jenner's scouting ability, the targeting system features a Beagle Active Probe. This allows the Jenner to locate enemy units. The mech also mounts a C3 Slave unit, increasing it's value as a cavalry mech. As the Jenner typically uses it's superior mobility to flank and close with the enemy, the C3 system will allow it's lance mates to take advantage of the Jenner's close proximity to the enemy to improve their accuracy.
The new Jenner has received rave reviews from the test pilots assigned to it and it has been ordered imto mass production for the DCMS.

The JR-7FC was developed by the AFFC to help replace losses suffered during the Clan Invasion. While not produced in the either the Lyran or Davion states, the Jenner has become common in their armies due to salvage from the DCMS. The former Federated Suns admired and respected the Jenner, seeing it's value as a light raider and scout, while the former Lyran Commonwealth could not understand how such a small mech could prove deadly to their massive Zeus and Atlas assault mechs. As a result the Federated Suns tended to put captured Jenners into service, while the LCAF typically stored them and would not use them. With the formation of the AFFC, many of these stored Jenners were requisitioned by regiments from the Federated Suns region and put into service. With the reintroduction of the lost Star League technology, the AFFC realized that the Jenners would need to be upgraded if they were to remain viable on the modern battlefield. With so many of the Federated Commonwealth's Jenners being deployed in the Federated Suns region it was only logical that the refit effort would take place there.
The GM facility on Talcott was chosen to conduct the extensive upgrades to the Jenner. The Jenners were brought to the facility where they were stripped down and the chassis reconditioned to a a new state. The Magna 245 engine was replaced with the General Motors 280 Extralight. The GM engine offered the advantage of easier maintenance since it was manufactured in the Federated Commonwealth, unlike the original Magna engine, and a high speed, which was considered valuable as the Jenner was seen as a cavalry mech by the AFFC. While the speed was increased, mobility was decreased by the removal of the jump jet system. While there was some discussion of retaining the jump jets, the Lexington Ltd Lifters were found to be problematic from a maintenance perspective and none of the other models tried by the design team were compatible with the Jenner's systems.
The weapons were redesigned to provide more of a punch. The arm mounted medium lasers were retained, although the old Argra 3L Medium Lasers were replaced with Intek models. The SRM was removed and instead the Jenner carries a PPC in the torso. Somewhat surprisingly the designers chose a standard Johnston Parti-Cannon model rather then the more advanced Extended Range model. The extended range models simply generated too much heat for the Jenner, even with Double Heatsinks.
The other changes made to the Jenner include replacing the electronics with models found in the AFFC, simplifying repair and maintenance. The armor was greatly improved, there are 6.5 tons of Star Guard Ferro-Fibrous armor, providing nearly double the protection of the JR7-D.

Overview:
Majesty Metals and Manufacturing is one of the few companies in Canopian space that can still build BattleMechs, primarily providing the MAF with Locust light 'Mechs and Marauder heavies. The losses in the Andurien War had highlighted the weaknesses of the Canopian 'Mech sources and the need was identified for a new skirmisher to, one hopefully affordable.
Magistracy Intelligence managed to obtain fragments of the design data of the Jenner 'Mech from what remained of Diplan and filled the gaps with advanced equipment coming back into service. In particular, the Wolf Dragoons were happy to work jointly with the Canopians in developing the capacity to build double-heatsinks, endosteel and ferrofibrous - for reasons that didn't become apparent until 3050, by which time the Canopian Jenner was nearing completion.
Capabilities:
The JR7-M Jenner lacks a missile launcher as that's part of the design that was missing from the data recovered for Majesty Metals. However, it mounts a fifth medium laser in the space and with double heatsinks it can use them far more freely than earlier Jenner models could.
Much of the systems are substitutes from other equipment - the electronics are simply those of the Locust, which work surprisingly well and are easy to maintain and replace. Everything is built on Canopus IV except the lasers, which have to be shipped from Dunianshire.
Deployment:
The new Jenners are going to the MAF and the Wolf Dragoons on a roughly equal division. While the Dragoons are using some to rebuild after the Battle of Luthien, others are being sold off on Outreach and have proven quite popular. It's likely in the future that some merc units will be allowed to buy directly from Canopus but at the moment sales are restricted.

Thought I'd detail a concept for those interested which I might not have time to create. It would be a refit from House Marik using the standard chassis which drops the SRM for a NARC. The Free Worlds League might have greater access to XL Engines which could be used to create room for the NARC and probably more armor. This would be another 'foreign design' which would not be favored by any true Marik Mechwarriors mainly found in the Commonwealth who typically support Minister-General Paul Marik and his daughter Corrine. There could be exceptions to this rule who are just natives fed up by outsiders interfering in their internal/domestic affairs.
Also a Rasalhague variant used against the Clan juggernaut is a definite possibility too which I definitely won't be able to dedicate time to. ;)

The Jenner JR7-R is the first new mech developed for the Kungsarme since the Battle of Tukayyid. Following the Clan defeat, Comstar began aiding the Free Rasalhague Republic in upgrading several of it's factories to produce mechs. One of the early efforts was the upgrade to Odin Manufacturing's factory on Orestes. While plans called for the production of a new design to be deployed by both the ComGuards and the Kungsarme, it was realized that it would take several years to develop the new Mech and put into production. Fortunately an opportunity arose that would help replenish the Kungsarme's losses and give Odin Manufacturing valuable experience with Mech construction.
The Kungsarme has traditionally used mechs from both the Federated Commonwealth and the Draconis Combine. It was not uncommon to see a Commando advancing towards the enemy while being protected by a Panther. Many of these mechs were lost during the fighting,. The Federated Commonwealth offered its support to the Kungsarme and sent several shipments of Battlemechs, including many Commandos, to the beleaguered nation. When the FRR approached the Draconis Combine about Panthers, they were rebuffed, due to a shortage of Panthers that had arisen due to the lost of many of the factories that built the mech. Instead the DCMS offered to provide the Republic with Jenners. After much consideration the FRR accepted the offer. They did however request several modifications to the mech. Luthien Armor Works was unable to meet this request, being pressed to deliver the JR7-N. Instead they proposed an alternative. LAW would deliver partly completed mechs to Odin Manufacturing who would complete the mech.
The new Jenners, featuring the same chassis, engine and C3 System of the JR7-N, would arrive at Odin Manufacturing without any armor, armament or cooling systems. Once there the design team mounted a pari of Extended Range Large Lasers in each arm. This allowed the Jenner to provide long range coving fire to other light mechs. To deal with the high heat of the lasers, the designers improved the cooling system, adding 2 more heastsinks. While the mech still runs a little hot, it considered acceptable.
The armor was also significantly increased. The FRR, with so few mechs, placed a high premium on survivability. The JR7-R features 50% better armor protection then the standard Jenner. One major difference between the standard Jenner and the JR7-R is the removal of the Jump Jets. As the mech is intended to ve deployed in support of Commandos, which are not jump capable, this was not seen as an issue. By removing the jump jets space was freed up for the other improvements to the design.

After the stalemate of the Clan Invasion, both the KungsArmé and the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery (DCMS) knew they needed to rebuild.
The Free Rasalhague Republic had seen its power base almost completely destroyed and had to rely on ComStar and other foreign powers help. The DCMS traditional reliance on Light ‘Mechs had shown its limits during the conflict as the Clans brought better ‘Mechs, far more agile and powerful than the ones usually found in the Inner Sphere.
However, economics and money was still something to take into account. For example, Luthien Armor Works (LAW) had only finished in 3046 the rebuilding of their Jenner line on Luthien and in spite of only producing the controverted JR7-K, the company could not stop its production and lose profits from its sales, not when lots of research and development and other investments were needed.
Perhaps more will be known when the time is set for declassification of the documents for this period but from the few sources available, it seems that the Ökurashö or Ministry of Treasure was already speaking with Prince Haakon Magnusson’s Cabinet and with ComStar Stellar Relations.
From the final results, it seems that LAW had to modernise the JR7-D and K still used by the KungsArmé to the specifications of this latest to turn them into an efficient unit against the Clans. In turn, ComStar gave LAW access to the production of some of its idle lines on Terra, which was both a way to keep them used and in pristine conditions and to get money out of it. This deal gave Luthien Armor Works enough resources to invest in some R&D for a “new†Jenner.
This is how the 6 models of the JR8 series where created, each with different capabilities but with a common basis, the JR7-K that LAW was producing.
The JR8-R was the retrofit made for the exclusive use by the KungsArmé. As such, LAW probably tried to keep changes to a minimal to make the most profit of the deal while still increasing the efficiency of the Jenner
This shows as the JR8-R is a mix between a JR7-K and the old JR7-F. It carries 6 Argra 3L Medium Lasers (from old stockpiles) with a complete replacement of the cooling system by Double Heat Sinks and adding 25% armour to protect the Jenner.
While not a revolution per se, according to different reports, the increased endurance and firepower have been well received by ‘MechWarriors and this Jenner also made their way into some mercenary units already using the Jenner, ensuring a small but constant demand and a “widespread†use in the Inner Sphere (“widespread†for a pure Kurita design that is).
If the JR8-R was an evolution, the other JR8, the K Series was more a revolution and even if we lack details, the most probable is that all this was only possible through the loan/sales by ComStar of some Extra-Light Engines produced on Terra, allowing the new Jenner to keep the same speed but with more free weight.
The JR8-K1 is an upgraded JR8-R with a C3 Master Computer on it and one more Double Heat Sinks. This was meant as an experiment as a control unit for the other JR8-K, even if Jenners are meant to work with Panthers and a C3 Master Computer in a Panther or a heavier unit would have make more sense. However, the sheer variety of the JR8-K series is probably meant to make Kuritan light units more coherent than before.
According to the best intel estimates available, the JR8-K1 is not widely produced. One might wonder why is the Draconis Combine throwing away one of it best assets? The answer lies perhaps in the old samurai/bushi mentality with only honourable duels being seen as worth fighting. However, one should note that the lack of long range weapons on this command unit might hamper the efficiency of its unit.
The JR8-K2 is designed to strike from afar and then fade, a bit like the Hussar from the Star League Defence Forces. Except that it slightly slower but that with an ER PPC (taken from the stockpile for the Grand Dragon), 2 Medium Lasers, a C3 Slave unit, a Guardian ECM and 5.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous Armour, it doesn’t play in the one shoot wonder weapon category. Careful analysis of its heat signature shows that it might run a bit hot if it alpha-strikes, something that it is designed to do at all.
The JR8-K3 is a variation on the same theme but with an indirect fire capacity thanks to 2 LRM-5 (with only one ton of ammo, limiting its stay on the battlefield or its flexibility but protected by a CASE) and an ER Large Laser from Diverse Optics, that is likely intending to make a breakthrough in an another market as the Aerospace Fighters one. The C3 Slave unit allows it to call for more help from its team mate or to bring its firepower where it matters.
The JR8-K4 is an electronical warfare specialist. With 6 tons of Ferro-Fibrous Armour, a Guardian ECM Suite, a Beagle Active Probe and a C3 Slave unit, it can detect and disturb any unit it faces. With its 4 Medium Lasers and 2 Small Pulse Lasers and TAG, it can defend itself against those ambushing it or fast enough to catch it.
The JR8-K5 is a coming-back to the original formula of the Jenner. With 6 Medium Lasers, a C3 Slave unit and a Narc Missile Beacon (probably imported from the Free Worlds League), it is at the same time a hunter and a team player able to link with a C3 Network or to help missile units to reach their targets.
Now that we have seen what Luthien Armor Works made of the Jenner, only two questions remain:
1. How long will ComStar provide these engines? When will it be worth for Luthien Armor Works to bring in a new production line dedicated to the specific engine needed by the JR8-K?
2. What are the KungsArmé and the DCMS plans with their new Jenner?
What ComStar might want is unclear as no one knows what they are getting from this deal. Depending on the price the Draconis Combine has to pay for each engine and on the future production of JR8-K, it might be a simple matter of time before LAW or another Kuritan company begins to produce the needed engine.
The KungsArmé is likely to focus on the retrofit of their Jenners to improve their capacity to hold against the next attack of the Clans.
Reports on the DCMS are unclear about the direction it will take. Some advocate for heavier and still mobile forces (thanks to the use of advanced technologies) while others point out at the spirit of the Bushi and variants of Captain Ravannion’s tactics. The new jR8-K would be perfectly suited to do this with their possible integration into a C3 network improving their efficiency. One example of this occurred on Kazanka in the Tabayama Prefecture were a company worth of pirates intended to steal crystals of yttrium. Thanks to their capacity to bind together a Lance of brand new JR8-K was able to destroy piece by piece the raiders while suffering only minimal loses. It seems that their efficiency earned them the right to paint their ‘Mechs in blood red.

Since I found out I had forgotten to add this as a comment from myself, I just want to add that I think Krupp Armament Works on Earth is producing the 245 XL Engine or is able to do so (perhaps for the Spector? I couldn't find who produced it for the Star League). However, I only have indirect evidence as the fluff for the Gurkha states that it was produced to keep the production lines on Terra busy and its engine is a 245 XL.

I guess it is possible Ice although the 245 XL seems more available to the Federated Commonwealth at this point for the Spector which was reintroduced in 3053 and expanded for the Talon in 3056). The Solaris Mech the Longshot followed in 3058. But it is possible that the ComGuards had a 35 ton reason to make the 245 XL and the Spector could well have been it. The Gurkha (3063) still looks a decade away and following a Blakist takeover which might not happen here.

By the early months of 3053, the DCMS (Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery) was in desperate need of new BattleMechs to replace losses due to the Clan Invasion. Given a breathing space by the victory of the ComGuards at Tukkayid, Gunji-no-Kanrei Theodore Kurita ordered a complete review of both research and development as well as planned upgrades of existing BattleMechs.
The Combine had been working on Omni-technology since the appearance of the Clans, and Kurita was impressed with the plans for a series of OmniMechs that would be constructed by Luthien Armor Works. However, development of these OmniMechs had slowed due to complications in implementing Omni-technology. While LAW was confident that these teething problems would be worked out, they admitted that it would take three to four years to do so.
Such a time frame was unacceptable to Theodore Kurita. He ordered LAW to overhaul and upgrade several BattleMech designs to incorporate the technology destined for the future OmniMechs.
The first unit chosen was the JR-7D Jenner, intended by LAW as the basis for the new OW-1 Owens OmniMech.
The design was upgraded with a new internal skeletal structure: the Diplan Scout-ES EndoSteel, which saved a ton-and-a-half of mass. The armor was replaced with 6.5 tons of New Samarkand Royal Ferro-fibrous, greatly increasing the armor protection of the new Jenner.
The engine was removed and replaced with a newly designed VOX 280 Extra-Light Fusion Engine. Originally intended for the new Owens (as well as refits of existing Archers and Warhammers in the DCMS inventory), this engine was lighter than the existing Magna 245 found in the JR-7D, but pushed the new Jenner design to even greater speeds (equal, in fact, to that of the Locust and Cicada).
Gunji-no-Kanrei Kurita also issued an order for the limited amount of double-strength heat sinks in Combine inventory to be made available to LAW for incorporation in the newly designated JR-7O. Most of these came from the Shilone Aerospace Fighter; it was said that when Theodore Kurita learned that the design engineers had "wasted" double-strength heat sinks on a design that incorporated no other new technologies (and did not actually require the added cooling abilities!) he and a small number of the Otomo (the Coordinators personal cadre of body guards) had a private meeting where this "misallocation" of vital DCMS technology was discussed.
After two top executives at Wakazashi Enterprises paid the ultimate price for this transgression against the Combine, the Shilone SL-17R was rapidly redesigned and the excess DHS made available to LAW for the new Jenner (and other BattleMechs).
LAW took the comm system (Sipher Security Plus w/C3 Network) and targeting/tracking system (Matabushi Sentinel w/Beagle Active Probe) directly from the Owens pre-production lines, as those components were already being produced with little--if any--delay.
The weaponry of the JR-7O-3 was virtually identical to that of the JR-7D: four Angra 3L Medium Lasers (two each mounted in both the right and left arms and able to pivot to target hostile forces behind the Jenner) and a Thunderstroke SRM-4 launcher in the center torso, fed by a two of ammunition. However, the design engineers at LAW had the tonnage available for a second Thunderstroke and another ammunition bin . . . and they used it. Although the JR7-O series had to remove the jump jets of the JR-7D, the design was very nearly heat neutral . . . as well as faster and being able to project very heavy firepower (for a light-weight BattleMech) at close range.
Two variants were also introduced. The JR7-O-2 retained all of the existing armor, heat sinks, and electronics, as well as the four Angra 3L Medium Lasers and one Thunderstroke SRM rack. However the second missile launcher was replaced with a Thunderstroke-L LRM-5 rack and a one-ton ammunition bin. This change gave the JR7-O-2 a limited punch at greater than short-range, albeit at the cost of raw damage in close.
The JR7-O-1 was the second variant and removed both SRM launchers for two LRM launchers and two tons of ammunition. Perfectly heat neutral on a running Alpha Strike, this version (despite the lower damage potential) was highly sought after by rank and file MechWarriors of the DCMS.
In addition to all of these components, the JR7-O incorporated a C3 Slave Module (in the head) and a Diplan Inquisitor Beagle Active Probe in the right torso, making the JR7-O Series Jenner excellent scouts and spotters for heavier BattleMechs.
Although intended only as a stop-gap measure until the production delays of the Owens were resolved, the new Jenner would remain in full production until the aftermath of the Jihad, when the JR7-O production lines on Luthien were destroyed.

Finalized my fluff. Like MA I took my idea from the Owens which I did not know was based off the Jenner until I started researching a month ago when I knew the design was coming up.

A creation of desperation from the FRR the JR7-R is a relatively low-tech variant pulled together in an effort to bolster the KungsArme in the lieu of peace after Tukayyid. Utilizing the "thoughtful" gift from the Capellan Confederation of Omni 175 engines stripped from Ravens that have since been upgraded with newer XL variants. The JR7 is much slower than its brethren, to compensate for this loss of speed the engineers have altered its basic missiles systems with a trio of LRM 5 Missiles systems granting much longer range of fire. While still maintaining the standard twin mounted battery of medium lasers in the arms. Making the most of the bad situation the new variant is able to mount 5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor as well as mount newer double heat sinks provided by ComStar at reduced prices.

The final three Jenner entries from Abele unfortunately were not fluffed which stinks especially cause R3 is pretty darn interesting. A hard charging Jenner with a Blazer?! Now that is a concept for the future almost certainly. I am thinking of some Regulan innovation during the Third Marik Civil War which might be designed differently but fill the same 'Blitzkreig' role for that faction. The others had promise two - I like the idea of using the standard PPC on these designs and an all Pulse Jenner would have its advantages. Too bad bud, maybe next time.
PASSABLE
16. JR8-3 & JR8-4 (Bradshaw)
While your base designs did much better than just pass here Bradshaw you went too far with these two variants, well at least in my opinion. Again, these models used 280 XL Engine (8/12/6) and much of the Owens equipment which would be a superb testbed for the future OmniMech. EndoSteel and Double Heat Sinks fit nicely but there was the sloppy armor error which nearly cost you the contest altogether. Was it ferro-fibrous or standard armor? It is pretty difficult to go through all of these designs and you guys have two weeks to get it right – please make sure you do so from now on. Why these two variants ended up here instead of with the other was the non-modular swaps which were attempted. Replacing a CASE between variants would require an extensive change of armor which is a bridge too far. Don’t get me wrong InnerSphere techs could certainly try something like this but I don’t see it working. Also, please double and triple check your designs for errors cause I am just gonna disqualify any obvious errors I find next time.
15. JR-8A (Abele)
One of the few simple Jenners presented during this contest that featured a standard 245 Fusion Engine (7/11/6) this one did have its share of advanced technologies. From five and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (98 factor) armor to an EndoSteel chassis which included Double Heat Sinks this was definitely an upgrade. The C3 Slave included here was also a must in my opinion for any would be contender in this contest. The weaponry left me a bit wanting here with only an ER Large and two Small Lasers to defend itself this Jenner is more of a harasser than it is a raider. I could see the Jenner fulfilling that role but others were more desirable to me.
14. JR8-F (Abele)
Much like the JR-8F this simple Jenner with a 245 Fusion Engine and two additional jump jets (7/11/7) shares many of the same advanced components as well as the same venerable power plant. Five and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (98 factor) armor, an EndoSteel chassis, Double Heat Sinks, and a C3 Slave all help improve this Jenner’s capabilities. More a traditional hard charger this one mounts four Medium Lasers and a Small Pulse which left me wanting. While the improved mobility is intriguing the point-blank range of the Small Pulse combined with its light hitting power is a bit of a letdown. Suppose it could be designed for anti-Elemental missions but I’d probably still prefer another Medium Laser in that case.
13. JR9-K (drakensis)
This was a little too radical of a Draconis upgrade of the Jenner which relied on a 245 XL (7/11/7) imported from the Federated Commonwealth (Loxley) in order to power it. Not sure I love that angle even during the desperate days of the Clan Invasion when such imports would be possible. Kurita pride might be so much that it could preclude such improvement. The standard chassis remains as do the Single Heat Sinks which is concerning. Jumping and/or firing the four Medium Lasers could result in overheating even though replacing the SRMs with a NARC Missile Beacon would lower those concerns. The C3 Slave and Beagle Active Probe together with the NARC turn it into an amplifier rather than a hard charger by itself. The five and half tons of ferro-fibrous (98 factor) armor is certainly an improvement. I don’t know it is really a lot of change to accept here but it is possible.
CONTENDERS
JR7-N (Irose)
This Draconis upgrade utilizes the same old Standard Chassis with a newly developed 245 XL (7/11/5) fusion plant to allow improvements. Development of such an engine for the pride of the Kurita BattleMech Corps would certainly be possible I suppose. Your gonna need Double Heat Sinks with the ER Large Laser and four Medium Lasers which generate a bunch of heat. Alternating long and short-range fire could be the best solution there and a C3 Slave, Beagle Active Probe, along with five and half tons of ferro-fibrous (98 factor) armor certainly do improve performance here. Not bad Irose, I just thought other advanced Combine approaches were better.
JR7-M (drakensis)
I liked this Magistracy of Canopus and Wolf Dragoon project except for the EndoSteel chassis which was a bit too advanced for me in the Periphery at this time. No problem with the Magistracy replicating the design or the Dragoon connection as I think they would be curious about the Periphery realms and somehow establish links with them. Sort of a continuation of their exploration mission of the InnerSphere perhaps a liaison program of a sort. Liked the six and half tons of ferro-fibrous (116 tons) armor and Double Heat Sinks as advanced tech for the Periphery at this time. Five Medium Lasers aren’t a bad armament either and gives you a lot of what the Kurita Jenner had. What I could see happening here is dropping two jump jets and downgraded to the original standard chassis which would match the Draconis model or even exceed it in some ways. Perhaps in the near future??
10. JR7-R (Irose)
I asked for a Free Rasalhague Republic variant and this one was certainly the most intriguing. I know Bradshaw’s lower tech model finished higher because of concept but based on fluff this better. I love the concept too which changes it into a fast-moving energy support asset with twin ER Large Lasers. Unfortunately, no one that I could find in the entire contest addressed arm flipping which the Jenner could probably do if so desired as it has no hand or lower arm actuators. Thanks to six and half tons of ferro-fibrous (116 factor) armor this one probably could do just that and support quite ably ComGuard and Kungsarme allies. Even without jump jets this was a good design but I felt that others just beat it out. Sorry Irose!
9. JR-701, 702, & 703 (masterarminas)
These three entries by masterarminas were ultimately judged to be too Owens and not enough Jenner. This can mostly directly be attributed to the movement rate which has no jump jets included. Don’t get me wrong I like the angle of approach with an advanced Jenner variant being a test bed for the Owens. Partial Modularity demonstrated in LRM-5s swapped for the SRM-4s in these variants was a great idea. I would have liked to have seen the Beagle Active Probe switched for a Guardian ECM in another variant as well. The C3 Slave is definite must on this upgrade as is Double Heat Sinks which are well fluffed as usual. Finally, six and half tons of ferro-fibrous (116 factor) armor provide for near total protection. Great job as usual however three advanced Combine Jenners finished ahead of you here Arminas, sorry!
8. JR-8X (Abele)
Abele’s best in my opinion is this experimental model which was a cross between a Jenner and a Capellan Raven in my opinion. Seemingly drawing on the Owens for inspiration but without the omni angle it uses EndoSteel, a 280 XL Engine with six jump jets (8/12/6), and Double Heat Sinks to boost performance. Six and a half tons of standard armor (98 factor) are an definite improvement for this surveillance Jenner which would fill a niche role in the DCMS. A C3 Slave, Guardian ECM Suite, and Beagle Active Probe all mounted where the SRMs usually go would make for an interesting look. The addition of a TAG for artillery spotting certainly would have been nice but the advanced electronics suite you put together is quite impressive. The Anti-Missile System isn’t bad here either helping to improve defensive abilities. I might have kept all four Medium Lasers if I were you instead of splitting them in two and adding two Small Pulses. Nice job Abele!

7. JR7-R Jenner (Bradshaw)
While the back ground story of this Free Rasalhague variant using old Capellan engines was a bit of a stretch even with ComStar assistance I really liked the concept. This slower Jenner with a LRM arsenal could provide fire support to other light units which may in fact be more traditional hard charging Jenners. I would have preferred a Periphery and/or Isis Marik for this design which would have been far more practical. Ultimately, I decided against anyone from this fourth party or outsider category making the winner’s circle but this was the closest because of its concept which I greatly appreciated.
6. JR8-K (drakensis)
A simple swap from the last lostech model which swaps standard armor out for ferro-fibrous and drops four Medium Lasers for two Medium Pulses. Much else like the standard chassis, the 245 Fusion Engine, and jump jets (7/11/5) remain the same. Keeping the Single Heat Sinks in this case makes a lot more sense too me because of the accuracy of the Pulses, their shorter range, and lower heat profile when compared to the double lasers in either arm. This was a solid contender and nearly the winner in the simple upgrade category but was ultimately defeated by another.
5. JR7-FC (Irose)
This FedCom Jenner which stripped out the jump jets and SRM in favor of a PPC makes me envision the Osprey BattleMech which would follow years later. The Magna 245 Power Plant has been replaced by the more powerful 280 XL engine which makes it go 8/12 MP. This sits nicely with the Double Heat Sinks which can all fit inside that new motor helping the dissipate the heat generated from the all energy arsenal. Unfortunately, much like masterarminas design I felt that this approach was too Owens and not enough Jenner. I really liked the decision to keep the Standard Chassis and go with six and half tons of ferro-fibrous (116 factor) for near maximum protection. Not a bad design but one other just beat you out here bud, sorry!
4. JR8-K1 through K5 (Ice Hellion)
Nearly winning the Draconis refits were these five advanced tech Jenners which were hurt by their energy armament just a tiny bit. In the same boat as Irose’s JR7-N which was another good entry but was missing those SRMs that I found made an important difference to me. Their short-range striking power I felt was essential ultimately and they do have some specialized roles which energy weapons just can’t fill out. Don’t get me wrong no ammunition explosions and unlimited supplies are good things but the impact of SRMs with the Jenner is too much for me to pass up. Surprisingly I also found myself favoring the 280 XL Engine upgrade to the 245 XL upgrade which was more plausible to me thanks to the development of the Owens. Importing the 245 XL from the FedCom would be possible I suppose but this is Lord Kurita’s prize Light Mech. I know these are a couple of very minor considerations in the ultimate scheme of things but your designs came very close to being the Draconis winner. Sorry bud, so damn close!
WINNERS
3. JR8-2 and JR8-1 (Bradshaw)
Even though there were some errors in the entry these high-tech Jenner upgrades presented as an Owens testbed were clearly my favorite Draconis entries. Movement was not only upgraded with the 280 XL Engine (8/12) but a jump jet was added (6) to improve mobility from the original. Not only can the twin SRM-4s be swapped for two LRM-5s in a pre-modular design but the Beagle Active Probe could also be exchanged for a Guardian ECM if so desired. The TAG is a nice feature as well as is the C3 Slave which I imagine could also be swapped out if so desired. Two arm mounted Medium Lasers round out the weapons and equipment. The only drawback was not being sure if this entry included Ferro-Fibrous or not which nearly resulted in a different outcome. However, it was the most Jenner of the upgrades presented and I believe deserving of a bronze medal. Congratulations Bradshaw!
2. JR9-F (drakensis)
While I wasn't fond of the Streak SRM-2 the rest of this FedCom upgrade was a winner to me. Integrating the remanants of the original Ozawa factory and the growing Norse-Storm industries with their 245 XL Engine for the Spector to execute this refit worked masterfully in my opinion. Like the Double Heat Sinks esepcially with the two upgraded Medium Pulses working in concert with two of the older Medium Lasers. Also it jumps 210 meters or seven hexes which is a nice boost to the original capabilities. The armor is also increased thanks to seven and half tons of standard plating providing a little more than max protection (120 which is one over the 119 allowable factor). I could really see AFFC units utilizing it the most with Davion and Steiner units not being fond of this enemy Mech. Silver medal, nice job drak!
1. JR8-R (Ice Hellion)
Keeping it simple this model dropped the SRM-4 and its ammunition (3 tons) in favor of two more Medium Lasers. This allowed another ton of armor (5 tons) which was upgraded to Ferro-Fibrous (89 factor). Double Heat Sinks were also added to help deal with the increased heat generated by the all energy arsenal. The movement rate (7/11/5) stays the same and with six Medium Lasers this Jenner can stay in the field indefinitely. This makes for an excellent striker which has no worries from ammunition explosions or exhaustion. Well done Ice, congrats on the gold medal and the win.

CASE can only be added by a factory, I had this designed as a production variant for this reason Strategic Ops has this as one of the harder refits. I learned this recently when people were talking on the Facebook page. The only thing harder is engines and internal structure.
