I'd agree. Everything since Focht mentions the idea in the novels the InnerSphere has been trying to copy the success of the Mad Cat.

The Rakshasa is pretty optimized and crit-packed, but there is a tiny bit of wiggle-room for optimization there.  But as-is, I think it's both superior to the Marauder, as well as a decent copy of the Timber Wolf given the use of inferior Inner Sphere technology.  I mean, it's effectively a lighter-weight, fast-moving Stalker, which describes the Timber Wolf pretty well, too.

So I was running some numbers on the Rakshasa and it is damn near impossible to change it. It is already one of the most optimized designs for what it is. Using InnerSphere tech you just can't emulate the performance of the Mad Cat any better. Is it the best use of a 75 ton chassis?? Well I'll leave that question for you guys to bat around here while we wait for more Marauders. ;)

After receiving a Request For Proposal (RFP) from the Lyran Quartermaster Corps for a new modern version of the venerable and venerated Marauder, the engineers the Bowie Industries facility on Carlisle jumped to the enormity of the task. After reviewing what few battleroms that made it back from the Clan front, they decided to emulate the Mech that was giving FedCom forces all sorts of trouble, the Mad Cat (aka Timber Wolf) The five new Marauders lack the speed of the Clan OmniMech as well as the armor protection, it more than makes up for these deficiencies by having the ability to jump. All five models are based on the five most common configurations. While they are not exact copies, due to the superiority of Clan technology, the engineers feel that they have done as well as they can given these handicaps.



MAD-6S Marauder
The first model is based on the Prime configuration, though an SRM6 launcher replaces one of the LRM-20s. The ER large lasers are copied from the Mad Cat. Standard medium lasers replace the Clan ER models while a medium pulse laser is mounted along with a single machine gun. Artemis IV FCS units grace both missile launcher to improve accuracy. Sixteen double heat sinks do what they can to handle the heat of the laser battery while thirteen tons of standard armor protect the Mech and its pilot.

MAD-6S2 Marauder
Meant to replicate the A configuration, the MAD-6S2 is armed with a pair Defiance 1001 ER PPCs which are backed up by a trio of Defiance P5M medium pulse laser and a Defiance D5S small pulse laser. Augmenting the energy-based battery are a pair of Coventry T4H Streak SRM2 launchers. Nineteen double heat sinks are more than enough to handle bracket fire operations of the weaponry. It does more precarious when more the bulk of the weapons are used at shorter ranges. Armor protection is provided 13.5 tons Valiant Lamellor standard armor.

MAD-6S3 Marauder
Based on the Mad Cat's B Configuration, this variant of the Marauder mounts a brand new Norse-Storm Gauss Rifle backed up by a standard Donal PPC rather than the inferior large pulse laser of Inner Sphere design. A pair of small missile launchers (LRM5 and SRM4) provide additional fire support even though they lack the Artemis IV FCS of the Clan OmniMech. The twelve double heat sink are capable of handling an alpha strike and jump with no heat buildup. Thirteen tons of armor are also mounted.

MAD-6S4 Marauder
The least popular, among the test pilots, of the new variants, the MAD-6S4 was meant to carry the KWI Ultra AC/5 autocannon, but after serious jamming issues it was replaced by the more reliable GM Whirlwind standard autocannon. An ER large laser and medium laser combo in the left arm provide the primary backup to the auto-cannon. A pair of TharHes REacher LRM10 launchers provide long-range fire support and a SureFire 444 AMS engages enemy missile as they approach the Marauder. Thireteen double heat sinks handle the heat buildup of all of the weapons while 13.5 tons of armor protect the pilot.

MAD-6S5 Marauder
The final variant is similar to MAD-6S2 as it retains the twin ER PPCS and a similar weapons configuration in the center torso. Even the Streak SRM2s are retained though this variant mounts six of them vice the two mounted on the MAD-6S2. Fifteen double heat sinks do the best they can to handle the heat of the ER PPCs and jump jets, though a disciplined pilot should have little problem with heat build up. Thirteen tons of armor provide all the phusical protection for the Mech and pilot.

While the MAD-5D Marauder is very popular among those Davion mechwarriors fighting against the Clans, those who still remain in the Federated Suns portion of the FedCom want a model of their own. One that has more autocannons and less heat. Thus the MAD-6D and MAD-6D1 were born. An energy weapon is still mounted in the form of the extremely rare and experimental binary laser cannon for the close-range kill capability. Twin auto-cannons are mounted on the two variants with Ultra AC/5s on the MAD-6D and standard AC/5s on the MAD-6D1. Both models have fourteen double heat sinks and both lack jump jets. Due to the heavy recoil of the auto-cannons, the medium lasers have been moved to the wing torso locations on the MAD-6D


MAD-6D Marauder The main issue with this variant is the shallow ammo bins. More than one test pilot has suggest that the medium lasers be removed and more ammo added. This suggestion has allen on deaf ears amongst the engineering team.

MAD-6D1 Marauder The main differences in this model are the use of standard armor and standard auto-cannons. Each AC/5 has two tons of ammunition. This is done to extend the on-field performance of theis variant and to be prepared for the new auto-cannon special munitions currently under development at General Motors and Kallon Industries. Two medium pulsers provide the only back up to the two main weapon systems. Fourteen tons of standard armor covers the Marausder Chassis vice thirteen tons of ferro-fibrous armor on the MAD-6D model.

Realizing the failure of the MAD-5M Marauder and its anemic pairing of large and medium pulse lasers, Ronin Incorporated decided to to take a hard look at the design and attempt to improve on the performance of the platform. All weapons systems were stripped off the chassis and replaced by a pair of CBD/IWW binary laser cannons. Even though the heat produced was significantly higher that that of the large pulsers, the range was increased by 50% and damage increased by 33%. This more than pleased the trio of test pilots involved in the evaluation. What made them even happier was the extra 2.5 tons of armor added to the chassis. The seven teen double heat sinks can handle the heat of the laser cannons while running full tilt. It only becomes an issue if more weapons are added to the mix. An Artemis IV-equipped LRM15 launcher provides the long-range punch for this Marauder while a pair of standard medium lasers provide additional short-range firepower. Fourteen tons of standard armor keep the Mech and pilot fairly safe from incoming fire. Additional protection comes from the Guardian ECM suite monted in the center torso.

A rather boring variant that goes the full energy route

A novel approach to the Marauder the MAD-4L, one of the team at Ceres Metals went with a command variant that features a trio of Firmir UltraLase ER Large lasers as the primary weapon with a pair of Ceres Arms W medium pulse lasers as backup. The command console allows a Capellan commander to have better tactical control of the modern battlefield while not having to worry about fighting his Mech as well. While the design lacks the hitting power of its predecessor, it does have the ability to engage at long range. The ECM suite allows the commander to stay 'hidden' from enemy sensors. Initial test the Fifth Confederation Reserve Cavalry has been met with mixed success as the pilots have found that the nineteen double heat sinks are barely capable of keeping the heat under control. What they miss most is the killing power of the PPCs. and some even suggested a fix to the design (see below). Two tons of extra armor is carried by the MAD-4L for a total 13.5 tons of standard armor.

Tai-i Syu Midorikawa was one of the few Combine Mechwarriors to survive and escape the onslaught of Clan Smoke Jaguar through the outer reaches of the Alshain Military District escaping on foot to one of the last DropShips to depart Richmond. HIs family's Maruader was a shattered ruin left among the rubble of Richmond's capital and the dead of the First Alshain Regulars. An engineer, as well as a Mechwarrior he turned to his home world of Togura to recover from his injures, both physical and mental. The fight with the Jaguars had taken him to his limit and he found solace in working with engineer friends at Ibuki Robotics as they were making their first foray into Battlemech production. Using the Marauder as a template and technological assistance from advisors from Independence Weaponry. Syu knew one of the keys to defeating the Clans was to engage them at as la=ong a range as conceivably possible for once they close and start to deploy battle armor the fight is all but over. Using the Vlar 300XL as the power source allowed for the use of the new Arrow IV Artillery system which was able to engage the enemy from unseen distances and with impunity. To better coordinate fire, this new Marauder is now part of C3 network and with the right ammunition can have rounds guided by a TAG system that is forward deployed. Once the ammunition runs out, an ER PPC and an array of medium laser provide the Mechwarrior with adequate firepower until he can get to a supply depot. Fourteen double heat sinks (a rarity in the combine) keep this new Marauder in the fight longer than one would expect. Armor portection is at near maximum with fourteen tons of standard armor.

Tai-i Midorikawa was the first to test pilot the new Marauder and he was able to engage targets from many kilometers away with the aid of the C3 network and TAG-equipped Locusts. He was very pleased an vowed to do his best to cinvince the DCMS Logistics command to accept the new Marauder.

Abele: not to rain on your ArrowIV parade, but I pretty sure that C3 systems have a relatively short range.  Otherwise you'd just spam artillery-C3 and break the game.  But the idea still flies with TAG.  Seems like a precursor to the Dragon II.

Takiro: regarding the Rakshasa, you can trade out the LRM10+Artemis for three LRM5s.  The average number of missile hits is slightly higher form the triple LRMs, it ignores ECM, chews up AMS ammo pretty well, and allows you to violate the Ares Conventions with six missile launchers instead of just two.  You do end up with greater heat spikes, unfortunately, but tradeoffs.

Although the Great Houses have been largely fixated on the Clan Invasion, and the frantic rebuilding process following the Truce at Tukayyid, reports from the anti-spinward Periphery suggest a new potential concern, particularly with Federated Commonwealth worlds having been stripped of many of their ‘Mech units.  The Circinus Federation, long considered little more than a pirate kingdom, appear to have begun fielding a number of Marauders that bear a striking resemblence to the MAD-4X first created by Ronin Inc and debuted during the War of 3039.

Initial intelligence analyses suggest that the Marauders are refits, and that the Federation is modifying these ‘Mechs at a hidden facility further into the periphery than their capital world of Circinus.  As of the latest information (in late 3053), it is uncertain whether this is a security measure or a matter of economic or political expediency, but the ‘Mechs themselves appear to be fairly uniform in appearance.  This suggests that the Federation has managed to acquire at least one experienced team of mechanics and engineers capable of the sort of refits on display.

The Circinus Marauders – tentatively assigned the model number MAD-4CF by SAFE, the Free Worlds League’s national intelligence agency – are pure energy-boats, with no ammunition dependencies, perfect for raiders that expect to be some distance from their supply lines.  The arm housings have been stripped of the traditional PPCs, and a pair of Binary Laser Cannons have been fitted into each.  No Marauder 4CF’s have been captured or destroyed to date, but the expertise to craft such “Blazers” from a matched pair of large laser cores has been around for centuries in both the Lyran half of the Commonwealth, as well as the league.

The 4CF carries an array of five medium lasers for close range brawls, and the sustained fire rate of observed Circinus Marauders suggests that the machines do carry some lostech, likely seventeen or more double heat sink “freezers”.  Armor fragments recovered from pirate raids on Galisteo and Poulsbo suggest that the pirates have managed to acquire a cache of Grumman-2 brand Ferro-Fibrous armor, and have layered on a considerable quanitity to protect their hard-hitting heavies  As that particular brand of armor is produced by StarCorps on Son Hoa, right on the pirate kingdom’s borders, this suggests that there may be some smuggling and/or corporate double-dealing in the famously free-wheeling (some would say even, corrupt) StarCorps Industries branch facility.

A few analysts in the LIC (Lyran Intelligence Corps) have run simulations suggesting something even more troubling – that the Federation may actually have a small-scale ‘Mech production facility.  However, this alarmist hypothesis is based on the analysis of tread markings from several different raids by Circinus ‘Mechs on Peripheral worlds, which (it is claimed) show that several different Circinus Marauders present with nearly identical tread markings, as if they were all built by the same factory.  However, given how weak the Federation economy was as recently as the early 3040s, and the utter lack of foreign direct investment from any of the Great Houses, it is of course inconceivable that the pirate kingdom could have acquired either the resources or the know-how to set up a native ‘Mech manufacturing site.

The TDF has a generally deployed a well balanced mech force.  The one weakness is their lack of assault mechs. Despite efforts to correct this problem, the Concordat has not been able to manufacture assault mechs.  Instead they have been forced to rely on mechs such as the Warhammer and Marauder to fulfill the assault mech role.  With the recovery of lost Star League technologies, Taurus Territorial Industries began developing a new version of the Marauder that could fill the assault role in the TDF.  Starting with the standard Marauder they removed the Pontiac Light Autocannon and replaced it with a 3rd Magna Hellstar PPC, leading some to dub the mech a mini-Awesome.  Some of the mass saved was used to increase the armor protection.  The -4T carries 13 tons of the new Durallex Heavy Ferro-Fibrous Armor, providing protection nearly equal to that of the Awesome.  To handle the heat generated by the Particle Cannons, the -4T has replaced its standard heatsinks with double strength models.  The final addition was a Magna Small Laser which has been mounted in the space that was formerly occupied by the ammo bin for the Pontiac Light.  There has been no no official explanation for the addition of this weapon.  Unofficially many claim it is because the Awesome also has a small laser.

The MAD-5T was designed by Vandenberg Mechanized Industries as response to the MAD-4T produced by Taurus Territorial Industries.  While TTI did license the -4T to Pinard Protectorate Limited, they refused to provide it to VMI due to a long standing rivalry between the 2 companies. VMI decided to develop their own "ultimate" Marauder. 

While the -4T was designed to be a mini-assault mech, VMI focused on turning the Marauder into a powerful close assault unit.  The design team at VMI started by removing all of the Marauders weapons.  The arm mounted PPCs were replaced with a Sunbeam Large Lasers.  A second pair of lasers was mounted on the mech's torsos.  This gives the mech a powerful punch at close range. The new weapons have proven very effective when the -5T is deployed in urban areas.  However a concern was raised about the threat that infantry pose in urban combat.  To provide the Marauder with a way to deal with this threat, the Martell medium lasers have been replaced with Hotshot flamer.  The final change to the weapons array is a rear mounted Magna Small Laser.  While this is officially meant to deal with enemy forces that get behind the Marauder, many claim the -5T carries a small laser because the -4T also carries one.

The new weapons generate even more heat then the original Marauder's weapon array.  To compensate for this, the designers add an additional heatsink and switched to double strength models.  This allows the Marauder to maintain a high rate of fire during combat.  The other major change was to mount 13 tons of Durallex Heavy Fire-Fibrous armor, greatly improving the protection of the mech.
