Our forty fifth and final heavy design is indeed the Orion presumably named after the giant Hunter of Greek mythology and/or the constellation. An ancient BattleMech dating back nearly six centuries (2456) the Orion is referred to as the poor man’s Atlas which could well be. Personally, I am rather ambivalent towards this design which is sort of the reason it is a great Free Worlds League Mech. It has a little bit of everything but doesn’t do anything well particularly in my opinion. Not saying it isn’t a solid Heavy BattleMech but I feel it is better as part of a larger unit not a stand-alone presence. That being said great leaders like Aleksandr Kerensky, Kenyon Marik, and Theodore Kurita all piloted this ‘Mech.
We’ve already had a few thoughts about how to go about the optimization of the Orion for the BattleTech Salient Horizons setting which I will repost right after this.
Design work has already begun on the Orion. I'm trying to do it without using an XL or Endo Steel
The challenge for me is that the Orion is functionally identical to the Marauder: same speed and weight. So how to distinguish a Marauder build from an Orion build, at least in terms of game stats? Obviously, the fluff is a little different -- the Orion is purely a FWL Kali Yama 'Mech, while the Marauder is from all over, but that's fluff. The silhouette is also different: the MAD is a chicken-walker, while the ON1 is roughly humanoid. But again, that's a fluff difference.
The major game-play distinction comes from their quirks, and the Orion is -- bizarrely -- an anti-Aircraft 'Mech that is also rugged and easy to maintain. That's a... weird combination. The AA means that flak weapons are ideal, but the rugged/easy-to-maintain encourages an all energy build that doesn't use ammo and thus doesn't tie a 'Mech to a supply depot (where it could also get ready maintenance). And none of the canon variants really take advantage of these quirks in a significant way.
I've been playing with a bunch of different builds and none of them really satisfy me. I think I'll probably try either a heavy-weight Rifleman load-out that really takes advantage of the variant Flak ammunition, or a Black Knight variant laser-boat build. The Perseus is a nice Omni concept on the design that retains two of the quirks, but has extremely limited crit slots, so can't really lean into the laser-boat builds.
The difference--as almost always--lies in the weapons mix. You can build a 75-tonner moving at 4/6 that looks (and feels) like a Marauder, or you can build one that looks (and feels) like an Orion. Try to stay true to the spirit of the 'Mech and its 3025 variants and you can't go far wrong. For example, the Orion should have (not always, but most of the time) a mix of long-and-short range missiles, short-range energy weapons, and a ballistic weapon. Whereas the Marauder (and most of its listed variants) almost never mounts missiles, being either all energy or a ballistic-energy mix.
Gives them a totally different feel on the playing field.
Now, you can break that paradigm (for example, fitting a PPC or Large Laser for the AC) and keep almost the same feel and spirit.
You can go completely outside the box, but that runs the risk of having a 'Mech that may be quite good on the playing field, but doesn't feel like a Marauder or Orion in play.
Anyway, you always take a risk when changing a canon design. And it will get even worse as we go up in tonnage because so many assault-weight machines are very similar in design and capabilities. (To one degree or another, of course).
Just my thoughts.
What I will say on the matter is that there are two different factories currently producing the design (Kalidasa and Kendall) which could lead to at least two different models. Don’t forget the new tactics and weaponry of the Free Worlds League which includes massed LRM-5 racks over larger systems, NARCs over Artemis IV FCS, and Blazers. While I’m not a fan of the Narc carrying ON1-M lostech variant the ON1-MA isn’t that bad at all. And don’t be afraid to go outside Marik space for mercenary variants as this venerable low-cost design could be a real presence there as well.

The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.
Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday July 30th 2021 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

ON2-K Orion
While House Kurita does not possess the ability to produce the Orion BattleMech, they have undertaken an ambitious refit and upgrade program for 'Mechs already in service with the DCMS (along with local Warlords and Nobles who can afford the cost).
Luthien Armor Works on Luthien has developed two closely related variants of the Orion that are intended to serve the Dragon as command 'Mechs. The first of these (the ON2-K) was first seen in 3051, shortly after the Clan Invasion and it proved very capable against hostile Clan forces.
LAW began the redesign by removing the heavy and bulky AC-10 and autocannon from the Orion chassis, replacing it with a Lord's Light PPC. Next, the engine core was removed and the standard heat sinks were removed, with Double-Strength Freezers taking their place before the Vlar 300 standard Fusion Engine was reinstalled. An additional ton-and-a-half of mass was saved by the removal of the standard armor, with 13.0 tons of New Samarkand Royal Ferro-Fibrous installed instead (keeping the same superb levels of armor protection as the ON-1K).
All other weapon systems were retained, but Artemis IV Fire-Control Systems were added to the LRM-15 and SRM-4 launchers (although the SRM-4 was moved from the right arm to the left arm) and CASE added to the left torso.
With the six tons left available, the engineering teams at LAW incorporated a head-mounted C3 Slave Module along with a C3 Master Computer in the right torso.
This provides the ON2-K with the ability to command and coordinate a C3 network lance and also tie into a fully integrated company. The C3 Master Computer also gives the MechWarrior assigned to the new Orion) the ability to designate targets for artillery and air strikes (just as if it mounted a TAG system).
These new Orions have quickly become quite popular in the DCMS, being refitted as quickly as LAW can perform the work.

ON2-M Orion
House Marik has long produced the Orion at its Kali Yama facilities on Kendall and Kalidasa. The 'Mech has become a mainstay of the Free Worlds League Military as well as Provincial Forces throughout the FWL. Many examples have also been exported to mercenary commands, some Periphery States, and (on rare occasion) other Great Houses.
When Kali Yama began looking at an upgrade, they began by replacing the ten standard heat sinks with Double-Strength Heat Sinks. The 14.5 tons of standard armor was replaced with 13.0 tons of the newly developed Valiant Lamellor 2 Ferro-Fibrous armor, saving weight but keeping the same level of armor protection as earlier models.
Only the Irian Weapon Works Medium Lasers were retained in the redesign. The LRM-15 launcher was replaced with three smaller Delta Dart LRM-5 launchers fed by two tons of ammunition (for sixteen triple salvos), saving yet another ton. These missile launchers are normally outfitted with NARC-seeker head missiles for increased accuracy. The SRM-4 was replaced with three Valiant Javelin Streak SRM-2 launchers fed by a single ton of ammunition. CASE was added to both the right and left torsos.
The AC-10 Autocannon was also removed and replaced with a Kali Yama Weapons Industries Type 5 LB-10X Autocannon with two tons of ammunition.
Full production of the ON2-M began in 3052 after extensive field testing proved the concept. It has since been quite popular among Free Worlds League MechWarriors.

The ON2-M2 is a second variant produced only at the Kalidasa facility. This version removes the LB-10X Autocannon and Streak SRM-2 launchers (and their ammunition) to instead mount an Imperator Dragon's Fire Gauss Rile in the right torso fed by three tons of ammunition. To make up (somewhat) for the decreased punch at shorter-ranges, the design team at Kali Yama installed a third Irian Weapon Works Medium Laser in the head.
Armor protection had to be reduced by 0.5 tons, however, resulting in a 'Mech with slightly less protection than the ON2-M.
Debuting in 3053 for field testing, the ON2-M2 rapidly proved its worth and quality and was approved for full-scale production later that year. Rumors suggest that both the ON2-M and ON2-M2 will be produced together, providing FWLM commanders with increased flexibility among their Orions. It is believed that the Kali Yama facility on Kendall will soon add an ON2-M2 production line as well.

Four very nice initial entries by masterarminas! Excellent start to this contest.

ON2-T Orion
Vandenberg Mechanized Industries has instituted a refit/upgrade/overhaul program or existing Orions in the Taurian Concordat. These 'Mechs (whose refit requires four months down-time at the New Vandenberg facility) have become available for the Taurian Defense Force, the Magistracy of Canopus Armed Forces, and the Outworlds Alliance, as well as mercenary commands and private owners throughout the Periphery and Inner Sphere. VMI has only a limited ability to refit these 'Mechs, limiting the upgrades and restorations to less than three dozen each year. However, demand has been high and slots are reserved up to fiscal year 3058.
The design team at VMI began the process by removing the SRM-4 launcher and AC-10 autocannon (along with their ammunition loads), although both Medium Lasers and the LRM-15 were retained (and a third ton of ammunition installed for the LRM launcher!).
In their place, the design engineers installed a Magna Hellstar PPC (right torso) and two Pinard Reaper Streak SRM-2 launchers (right arm), fed by a single ton of ammunition. A third Irian Weapon Works Medium Laser was added to the head, while two Voelkers 200 Machine-guns were installed in the center torso, with a half-ton of ammunition in the right torso.
Next, VMI removed the ten standard heat sinks and replaced them with thirteen Double-Strength Freezers. The armor was replaced with 13.0 tons of newly developed Ferro-Fibrous plating as well (leaving overall protection at the same level as the original model). CASE was added to both the right and left torsos.
While some detractors of the design referred to it as little more than an "overweight Thunderbolt-clone," the Orion-T has received rave reviews from MechWarriors lucky enough to be assigned one in the field. Performance has been so good, in fact, that the Protector is pushing VMI to build a new production line on New Vandenberg to produce the ON2-T instead of just refitting existing 'Mechs.

ON2-W Orion
Blackwell Industries of Outreach has begun to produce a new variant of the Orion for Wolf's Dragoons (and select customers throughout the Inner Sphere and Periphery). Using the full spectrum of recovered Star League technology, the ON2-W promises to be an effective heavy-weight BattleMech.
Blackwell began by redesigning the base chassis to incorporate Endo-Steel II internal structure members and replaced the standard armor with 13.0 tons of Ferro-Fibrous. Double-Strength Freezers took the place of the standard heat sinks, while CASE has been installed in both side torsos.
All weaponry except the LRM-15 launcher has been removed and replaced, and even the Doombud LRM-15 has received Artemis IV Fire-Control Systems. A Harpoon SRM-6 launcher (with Artemis IV FCS and one ton of ammunition) was installed in the right arm, while a Defiance Disintegrator LB-10X (with two tons of ammunition) is fitted where the old Autocannon-10 used to be mounted. Both Medium Lasers have been replaced with Sutel Precision Line Medium Pulse Lasers as well.
The end result is a very tight design, with little internal space remaining . . . making the Orion-W somewhat difficult for Techs and AsTechs to perform repairs or conduct general maintenance. However, the design is effective, rugged, and packs a solid punch. The ON2-W has replaced all Orions in the service o Wolf's Dragoons and starting in 3054 will become available for export to interested customers (at least those approved by General Wolf).

With no exposure to combat the ON1-M variant has only seen use in battlefield simulations and training exercises in the 3 years since its debut. With less than stellar Post Exercise Reports (PXR), the brass in the FWLM asked for changes to the Kali Yama Weapons Industries design. Primary concerns lay in the usage of the NARC missile target acquisition system. While beneficial the systems short range forced the 'Mech to get within ranges that once used forced the design to slug it out with its opponents or withdraw to longer ranges after deployment to fight again at longer ranges. With the new military strategy being implemented within the League this system could be removed and designated to lighter quicker designs that could approach and withdraw much quicker then the lumbering pocket assault 'Mech. With the removal of the NARC and subsequent removal of its Irian Weapons Works Class 4 SRM-4 system. The design has incorporated twin Large Lasers as a means to have a primary weapons system that wasn't ammo dependent. With the increasing large number of upgrades to designs with the ER variant Kali Yama was able to pick up the older systems at quite the bargin. With this additional heat sinks were required but were easily added into the design.

Acquired through legitimate or other less savory methods the Marion Hegemony has acquired a sizeable number of Orions over the past few years. With little access to newer lostech technologies the Caesar has authorized the Orion to be their focal point on upgrades in the heavier weight 'Mech categories. While not upgraded with as much advanced technology as its Inner Sphere brothers the Hegemony engineers have added just enough to improve the design. With the upgrade and replacement of the Kali Yama Class 10 Autocannon the larger Kali Yama Big Bore Autocannon the engineers were able to replace the ammunition feeding system on those designs not already updated with the Norse-Storm BattleMechs upgrade. The lost tonnage was available after the replacement of its Valiant Lamellor armor with a variety of acquired sources of Ferro Fibrous armors obtained. The Kali Yama Death Bloom LRM-15 launcher was able to be upgraded with the Artemis IV with the removal of its Irian Weapons Works Class 4 SRM-4 launcher, which also allowed for the doubling of its Irian Weapons Works Medium Lasers. While still vulnerable to ammo explosions due to the inability to obtain or lack of knowledge with CASE technology the design is an improvement over the older variant and will bolster the armies of the Marian Hegemony for the near future.

Kali Yama Weapons Industries released the upgraded ON1-M Orion in 3049 to much fanfare, using a Hermes 300 Extra-Light fusion engine in order to find the tonnage to upgrade the LRM launchers and autocannon. However, the ON1-M also featured a Narc Missile Beacon, a weapon that required the Orion to move to within close range in order to utilize, and the Clan Invasion (and the Clan’s fast-moving Omni-Mechs) made it obvious to Inner Sphere militaries just how low a top speed of 64kph truly was.
Kali Yama returned to the drawing board, and made some modifications to their flagship Orion design, speeding up development of their Endo Steel production processes, which had first debuted in their upgraded TBT-7M Trebuchet. The Orion ON2 series uses a Corean-II Deluxe Endo-Steel chassis, upgrades the heat sinks to double-strength freezers, and retains the Hermes 300 XL in order to maximize weapons systems, truly leaning into the “gunboat” role. The ON2-L has nearly the same weapons systems as the ON1-M, including the Kali Yama Industries LB10-X, but adds an Artemis targeting system to the Kali Yama Weapons Industries Type V LRM-20 launcher. It drops both the Narc and the SRM system, but upgrades both medium lasers to Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Lasers, giving the ON2-L significant long-range punch. Fourteen total double heat sinks help mitigate the tremendous heat of the weapons systems.
The ON2-G is an alternative offering of the ON2 series, produced at Kali Yama’s Kendall facility. It fits a Zeus Slingshot Gauss Rifle, sourced from Irian Battlemechs Unlimited, in place of the LB10-X Autocannon, but retains the LRM-20 and Artemis of the ON2-L. It also has CASE protection for both torso ammunition bins, and just one Diverse Optics Sunbeam ER Large Laser (in the right arm), with a Diverse Optics Type 18 Medium Laser in the left arm weapons housing, with an Irian Weapons Works Class 4 SRM launcher wrapped around the laser. This variant ON2 has just ten double-strength heat sinks, all integrated into the Hermes 300 extra-light engine.
The last ON2 series upgrade offered by Kali Yama (out of their main Kalidasa facility) upgrades all of the classic Orion’s weapon systems, dropping the SRM in order to fit lostech in every other weapons mount. The right torso autocannon is a Kali Yama Weapons Industries LB 10-X, while the left torso uses the reliable Kali Yama Death Bloom LRM-15, but with Artemis IV fire control integrated into the Wasat Aggressor Type 5 targeting system. A generous three tons of missiles feed the LRM-15, and two tons are available for the LB autocannon; no CASE is used to protect the ammunition on this variant.
Although the ON2-LP has decent long-ranged firepower, it is as a close-in brawler that the design truly shines: in place of the arm-mounted medium lasers, the LP fits two Diverse Optics Type 30P Large Pulse Lasers instead, one in each arm, providing nearly double the hitting power of a medium laser with significantly greater accuracy. With thirteen double-strength “freezers”, the LP is an exceptionally cool-running ‘Mech, capable of firing almost non-stop with all its weapons system, generating only excess heat for movement. In fact, the three tons of missiles for the LRM allows League ‘Mechwarriors to load a ton of dead-fire missiles for their LRM launcher if desired, giving up the enhanced accuracy of the Artemis, but allowing the Orion to punch significantly harder at point blank ranges.

This one is based on the semi-canon Mechwarrior 5 'Mech. It's a really nice sidegrade of the Orion, so I tweaked it to make it work slightly more effectively than the Mechwarrior variant.

A new Capellan-specific Orion upgrade came to light after Sun Tzu’s ascension to the Chancellorship of the Capellan Confederation in 3052, and the loan of CCAF forces to his fiance Isis in the Third Marik Civil War. Designated the ON1-L by SAFE, the Free World’s national intelligence agency, this upgraded Orion appears to be a “factory refit” of the Confederation’s modest Orion forces, and seems to be known as the “Betelgeuse” upgrade by Capellan forces – more specifically, the “Yad al-Jauza” upgrade, the classical Arabic name for the system, which literally translates as the ‘Hand of Orion’. Every Orion “Betelgeuse” seen on the battlefield thus far appears to include the symbol of the Kali Yantra, similar to a unit marking, but it is unclear what the significance of this marking might be.
The “Betelgeuese” monicker reflects that the Capellan Orion has been created as a refit by Aldis Industries of Betelgeuse – yet interestingly, they are best known for being a vehicle manufacturer, with almost no Battlemech production or refit experience. The ON1-L “Betelgeuse” uses a Vlar 300 XL engine in place of the Vlar 300 standard engine – possibly produced natively by Aldis Industries, but the sourcing for the modern extra-light engine is a bit opaque, reflecting the Confederation’s overall lack of transparency. All standard weapons have been removed, and replaced by three Firmir MaxiLase Large Lasers (clearly produced by on-planet armaments partner Firmir Weaponry), one in each arm in place of the medium lasers of the original, and a third in place of the right torso AC-10 of the original. The ON1-L fits six Longfire Light V LRM-5 racks in place of the classic arrangement: four racks in the left torso, and two racks wrapped around the large laser in the arm housing of the left arm. Four tons of LRM ammunition in a CASE-protected left torso bin feed all six sets of missile racks.
Units facing the ON1-L on the battlefield have noticed that it appears to carry at least one ton of dead-fire ammunition, making the ‘Mech hit quite hard at brawling ranges, and isn’t simply a fire-support platform. Sixteen double heat sinks (twelve of them integrated into the Vlar engine) manage to mitigate the worst of the heat spikes that come with this Orion. Analysts suggest that the weapons mix is intended to match the reliability and ruggedness of the Orion frame, while also being easy to pop out and replace if damaged on the battlefield, and the low-cost and low-tech weapons dramatically reduces the Orion “Betelgeuse’s” logistical burden on the financially strapped CCAF.

The 'Mech version of the Partisan. Had to squeeze in one lostech material (the ferro-fibrous), in order to make weight, and added the CASE because it's practical, especially for a Periphery power, but otherwise it's a stock Orion chassis, including the single heat sinks.

Produced in limited numbers on Alphard by Kali Yama/ATC, the joint partnership formed between Kali Yama and Alphard Tracing Company, the ON1-MH is intended to lean into the Orion’s strengths – particularly as an anti-aerospace platform, and its famed ruggedness – while also reducing the logistical burden of the standard Orion on a cash-strapped periphery nation.
Part of Caesar Sean O’Reilly’s “Romanization” of the Hegemony, the Orion refit (and the partnership with Kali Yama) are intended to help modernize the MHAF. The refit itself is quite basic, involving surplus used (and usually quite badly damaged) Orion chassis supplied by Kali Yama, which are then being refurbished and repaired on Alphard, under the supervision of qualified Kali Yama technicians. The long-term goal is clearly to help the Hegemony develop local expertise with Mech maintenance, and ultimately production, while Kali Yama gains a valuable source of additional revenue, and the ability to bid up the price of their goods and services in the Free Worlds League as a result.
The redesignated ON1-MH downgrades the Vlar 300 fusion engine to a smaller (and more affordable) Nissan 225, a common power source due to bankrupt aerospace firm Raimei, and the widespread manufacture and production of Sabre aerospace fighter components throughout the Inner Sphere. The Hegemony actually sources the engines from Lockheed/CBM of the Federated Commonwealth, and Pinard Protectorates Ltd, which merged with the Taurian branch of the Alphard Trading Company and retained friendly relations with the Alphard office; purchase orders suggest that the Hegemony has nearly a dozen of these ‘Mechs in its armed forces. Although this reduces the Orion to a top speed of 53kph, it is clear that the ‘Mech is intended primarily as a defensive lynchpin and fire-support unit.
Missles are typically the most expensive logistical element of modern weapons – they are not only quite pricey, they also require a fair bit of technological know-how to manufacture and transport, and this typically ties smaller Periphery powers to Inner Sphere suppliers. The Hegemony gets around this issue by pulling all missile weapons off their Orion, and downgrades the KaliYama Class 10 Autocannon to the ubiquitous Deleon-5 Autocannon, produced in huge numbers on Kalidasa (and elsewhere) by Quickscell Company for their Scorpion Light Tank – the purchases running through the joint KY-ATC account. The ON1-MH mounts four of these guns, individually modest in firepower, but collectively capable of putting a serious pounding on both ‘Mech and conventional forces to ranges of 540 meters. Two are fitted to the right arm and right torso weapons housings, while the last two are fitted top-to-bottom in the large left torso shoulder housing, which originally fitted the LRMs.
The autocannons are all fed from a a four-ton ammunition bin in the right torso, and the bin is CASE-protected, significantly increasing the survival rate of both the precious heavy ‘Mech, as well as its pilot. It is also sub-divided into four smaller bins, allowing pilots to switch between ammunition types in the middle of combat. MHAF doctrine appears to be to carry a mix of standard HE and anti-aerospace Flak rounds, making the ON1-MH a deadly anti-air unit, and a credible threat against ‘Mechs and vehicles on the battlefield. Two Diverse Optics Type 2 Medium Lasers, produced on Alphard originally for the J Edgar hover-vehicle, add additional close-combat pounch, and are all fitted into what was formerly the left-arm weapons housing, giving this Orion some close-in firepower in a pinch, and one not dependent on ammunition.
All systems on the ON1-MH are Succession Wars technology, save for the armored shell (and integrated CASE), which consists of thirteen tons of Aldis Heavy Ferro-Fibrous armor, an SLDF-era material whose composition and manufacture was detailed in the Helm Memory Core. This provides the Orion with maximum protection for its weight, giving the design remarkable durability and suggesting that the Hegemony plans to embed the ‘Mech in the midst of a formation and provide mobile anti-aerospace protection. As to the sourcing of this armor, it appears that Kali Yama is testing the lostech Aldis Heavy weave in a number of their prototypes, and was happy to provide their periphery partner with large quantities at cost, with the expectation that the MHAF would provide feedback to their League partner – which also implies that the Hegemony is planning large-scale raids or other significant military actions, if they expect to be using one of their rare 75t heavy ‘Mechs soon.

Originally I tried this with an Ultra AC-5, but the thing just isn't optimized at all. Instead I saved 4 tons by swapping in a PPC, and although the thing can overheat now, it's much more effective and reliable overall. Plus I got to attribute the design to Team Banzai, which is a win.

One of several proposed “field refit” upgrade packages for the AFFC’s venerable Orion heavy ‘Mechs, the ON1-D variant was designed by the famed Banzai Weapons Design Company. It appears to be the brain-child of Dr Anna Banzai, daughter of the mysterious ‘Mechwarrior and engineer Dr. B Banzai, leader of the elite mercenary unit Team Banzai. The actual sourcing of components largely comes from New Avalon-based partner firms, all of whom have teamed with Banzai Weapons Design in the past.
The “field refit” transforms the Orion into a close-range brawler, with just a single long-ranged weapon, a right-torso mounted Magna Hellstar PPC, sourced from Corean Enterprises. The missile racks were all replaced with Harpoon-6 SRM racks, sourced from Lycomb-Davion IntroTech, and mated to Artemis IV fire-control systems and the Sync-Tracker 39-42071 targeting system from Corean Enterprises (specifically taken from their Valkyrie lines). The two arm-mounted medium lasers were retained, but replaced with compact ChisComp 39 Medium Lasers, supplied by Archenar Battlemechs, from their Dervish lines. Also from Archernar is a new carapace of StarGuard Ferro-Fibrous armor, with thirteen tons providing comparable protection as the classic Orion, with integrated StarGuard CASE for the four tons of SRM ammunition. Ten double heat sinks, all integrated into the existing Vlar 300 fusion engine, give the ON1-D double the heat dissipation of the Succession Wars era design, but still struggle to handle heat spikes from all weapons. The ON1-D is intended to be used as a ‘bracket-fire’ unit, and the PPC is expected to be utilized only sparingly when at close ranges.
The final touch is the use of General Motors Type B Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry, produced on Kathil as a special order for the “field refit kit”. The inclusion of MASC gives the Orion bursts of speed up to 85kph, comparable to Clan heavy cavalry designs, and giving it the chance to close to its preferred close range attacks. The partition of the large left-torso ammunition bin for the SRMs was intended to allow the ON1-D to load a mix of variant missile types: NAIS and Team Banzai have noted that Inferno missiles tend to work exceptionally well against Clan battle-armor, and initial tests of the newly developed Tandem-Charge missiles suggests that they could also be useful against Clan ‘Mech and battle-armor alike.

Here's the all-energy build that two of the Orion quirks (rugged, easy to maintain) favor. I really wanted to make this a ComGuard 'mech, and it's loosely based on the Clanbuster Black Knight, but just couldn't find the fluff for it in 3053. By 3070, this would be a totally viable Word of Blake design, but in 3053, it's really only the Confederation or Combine that could do this, and the Combine has a massive double heat sink shortage and hasn't finished development of the No-Dachi...so Confederation it is. Given the astronomical price of the refit, you can see why they might develop a 60-ton melee 'Mech (the impressive Ti Ts'ang) instead of a heavier design, not that the Ti Ts'ang is all that cheap at 15M C-Bills itself.

1x Triple-Strength Myomer (6cr) 2RA/2RL/2LL
After perfecting the formula for Triple-Strength Myomers in 3050, Bergan Industries of Ares initially struggled to find ways to utilize and market their (admittedly very expensive) product. As primarily a producer of light ‘bug’ mechs, Bergan was not producing war machines that could best showcase the Triple Strength Myomer, so looked into creating factory refit designs that could both promote the material, while also bringing in more business and expertise, particularly with heavier ‘Mech designs.
The ON3-L is one such offering, chosen by Bergan because of its rugged design, and the open framework making it both easy to maintain, and also relatively easy to modify (as ‘Mechwarriors through the centuries have noticed). They completely rebuilt the GM Marauder chassis, using Earthwerk STG II Endo-Steel, already being produced at their Ares facility for their upgraded Stingers, then rebuilding the myomer bundles of the ‘Mech from the ground up, using their Triple Strength Myomers. Given the localized nickname of “Shen” (the Chinese name for the Orion constellation, from ancient Terra), the redesignated ON3-L (a pun based on the fact that Shen, the Hunter, is written with the Chinese character for ‘three’, for the number of stars on his belt) can consistently move at speeds of 85kph due to its Ford 375 extra light fusion engine, manufactured on Terra by Ford Military Ltd, but purchased in limited special order quantities for these upgrades. However, Bergan’s TSM boost the Orion to a blistering 96kph when heated and engaged – swiftly enough to pace lighter scouts and able to run circles around heavier ‘Mechs. Fifteen double heat sinks, all integrated into the massive engine block, allow the ‘Mech to dissipate (or even modulate and maintain, by configuring which sinks are turned ‘on’ or ‘off’) a sizable amount of weapons and movement heat.
The design adds a right hand actuator to the Orion, wielding a fearsome hatchet, capable of cleaving through a light ‘Mech in a single blow, and making it a significant melee threat. In order to heat up and keep the TSM engaged, the “Shen” strips out the bulky and ammunition-dependent autocannon and missile racks of the classic Orion, and is instead equipped with an array of energy weapons. Bergan was able to provide the seven Martell medium lasers from its own facility, with four in the left arm housing, giving a real “laser punch”, and three more clustered around a Martell large laser in the left torso, in place of the LRMs of the classic Orion. Bergan does source the right torso Ceres Arms Smasher PPC from Ceres Metals, the single long-ranged weapons system on the swift-moving “Shen” ON3-L. A head-mounted Apple Churchill 442x TAG unit, also sourced from Ceres Metals, sits in the head of the ‘Mech just below the cockpit.
This new design came as a nasty surprise to opponents of those McCarron’s Armored Cavalry units fielding the fast-moving heavy melee design in the early years of the Third Marik Civil War. League pilots, expecting the Orion to act in a fire-support role, were not expecting a speedy and brutal melee design, and appeared similarly confounded when attempting to avoid melee, and realized that the ON3-L is nearly as comfortable in close-range brawls. Although the design requires a fairly skilled ‘Mechwarrior, in order to take full advantage of its capabilities, it is already inspiring Confederation armaments manufacturers to work on developing native designs that can mimic some of the “Shen’s” impressive capabilities.

Thought about doing a Blackwell Wolf's Dragoons model but they just came out with the War Dog, which I like but could be tweaked as well.

I really wanted to make this a ComGuard 'mech, but just couldn't find the fluff for it in 3053.
A Clan Buster variant might work as they used the 300XL engine for most of them
-
A lesser seen Clan Buster variant outfitted by ComStar for the battle on Tukkayyid the Orion CB is a well rounded design that should be considered for future full production by some great power. With the inclusion of the tonnage saving though bulky XL engine Comstar engineers have turned the generalist role into a more sniper or missile boat design. With twin Doombud LRM-15s and its Imperator Code Red LB 10-X Autocannon the design is more then efficient at medium to long ranges. Backed by four Martell medium lasers the design has satisfactory short range support for any 'Mechs that are able to approach within the designs missiles minimum ranges. While only 20 of these designs were able to upgraded in time for the battle, 16 of the 20 were able to make it back on their own legs or as viable salvage.

Following the disaster that was the Andurien Succession, Magestrix Emma Centrella ascended to the Magisterial Throne in 3040 intendeding to normalize relations with the Free Worlds League, and attempt to rebuild and expand her nation’s economy. One priority was finding ways to produce effective ‘Mechs within the Magistracy, without growing dependent on untrustworthy and militaristic Coreward nations like the League or Confederation. Although the Magistracy produces a number of native ‘Mech designs, the Magistracy Armed Forces was interested in upgrading their existing ‘Mech units with as many lostech materials as possible – and refit priority was given first to trooper and heavy ‘Mech designs, which were expected to see both the biggest benefits.
Due to their proximity (and infrequent conflicts) with the Free Worlds League over the centuries, the MAF fields quite a number of ON1-K Orions, and Majesty Metals and Manufacturing was contracted to upgrade the machines, some of which were several centuries old. MMM’s Dunianshire facility was chosen as the primary refit location, and MMM attempted to integrate as many lostech components as they could produce, into the upgraded Orion. The redesignated ON1-MC thus features a massive and reinforced Earthwerks SHD II Endo Steel chassis, and equips fifteen “freezer” double heat sinks, with three of the bulky sinks fitted into the cavernous torso. The weapons load-out was completely revamped, with a massive “Parti-Kill Heavy” PPC (from MMM’s Manticore line) in the right torso, and two Martel Medium 5 Lasers replacing the original or replacement lasers in each arm.
As part of the upgrade, the ancient Irian Orator-5K comms and Wasat Aggressor Type 5 targeting systems were stripped out and replaced with a new O-P 300 Commset and O-P 2000A target & tracking system, both pulled from MMM-Dunianshire’s long-standing Shadow Hawk production lines. Fourteen and a half tons of the Shadow Hawk’s Maxmillian 43 standard-grade armor was also used to replace the Orion’s existing armor plating, and Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment was incorporated into the left torso, to protect the five ton ammunition bin. Finally, the ON1-MC is equipped with six Shannon-Fore SRM launchers, with one each wrapped around the medium laser in each forearm housing (mirrored left and right), in the classic Orion arrangement, and four SRM4 launchers in the left torso housing. With a massive 125 salvos of short-range missiles in its left torso ammunition bin, this Orion can utterly shred at brawling ranges – it has roughly half the close-range firepower of the feared SRM Carrier, but with greater speed and significantly greater armored protection.
Since the first ON1-MC upgrades have been redeployed to Canopian line units, the MAF has been been experimenting with alternate missile types, and typically fields one ton of Inferno or Smoke missiles in most combat situations, and has been working on reverse engineering Tandem-Charge and Fragmentation designs, as these warhead types are expected to be quite effective against irregular (= pirate) forces most commonly faced by Magistracy units.

A Clan Buster variant might work as they used the 300XL engine for most of them
Bradshaw, that's a pretty nice Clanbuster, a really nice fire-support unit. But what I meant was that I was trying to create a 5/8 speed melee mech with Hatchet that also had triple-strength myomer, plus 'future-proof' the design by include 2.5 tons of electronics so that the thing could readily swap in some C3i when ComStar and the Blakists get that technology developed. ComStar has access to the necessary 375XL engine, but doesn't have easy access to Triple-Strength Myomers until the 3060s, so that meant that if I wanted a TSM-equipped melee 'Mech in 3053, I was stuck with either the Capellans (Bergan-Ares) or Combine (Cosby Research).
-
Nice stuff guys, I was thinking of a ComGuard Clanbuster myself but with a Ultra AC/5 and other far reaching weapons.
-
I think this is the last concept (technically two of them) from me. The ON1-SX is clearly a precursor to the Heavy Gauss Rifle equipped monsters that Defiance starts churning out in the 3060s. The ON1-S is just a solid fire-support 'Mech, though not terribly flashy. In all cases, I tried to feature Defiance produced weapons that were not yet on full production 'Mechs, but which would have been available in their final production form by 3053.

Throughout the centuries, the Lyran Commonwealth half of the Federated Commonwealth acquired quite a number of Orion ON1-K heavy ‘Mechs, either as battlefield salvage, or by purchasing surplus and used chassis from the Free Worlds League’s secondary arms market. Following the Clan Invasion, as the AFFC scrambled to rebuild their shattered ‘Mech forces, the Orion was seen as one of the ‘Mechs needing an upgrade, as the mid-ranged brawler had performed miserably against speedier, and longer-ranged, Clan forces. Defiance Industries’ proposal was among the most intriguing, and as one of the major arms manufacturers of the Commonwealth (with long-standing ties to the military procurement bureaucracy), their ON1-S proposal was quickly green-lit, with refits at their Hesperus facility proceeding apace by the middle of 3053.
Defiance clearly approached the refit contract as an opportunity to test out their latest lostech developments, starting with a bulky Chariot Type IV Endo-Steel frame that appeared to be slightly oversized as a chassis for the Orion (a nearly identical design would be used for their Salamander 80t assault ‘Mech, which would release a year later in 3054). All heat sinks were replaced with double-strength “freezers”, and the ancient comms and targeting systems were replaced with a matched TharHes HM-22 commset and targeting system, both taken from their new Battle Hawk line, both comparable to the 26th-century electronics on the older ON1-K models. Fourteen and a half tons of “Glasgow Limited”-branded ‘Mech armor, with integrated CASE protection, replace the existing armored plating, and retaining the peerless armored protection that defines the Orion line of heavy ‘Mechs.
All weapons systems on the older Orions were removed to make way for Defiance Industries replacements. The ‘Mech is assymmetrical, in that its long-ranged weapons are both on the right half, while its short-ranged weapons are on the left half; this is intended to allow ‘Mechwarriors to torso-twist the ‘Mech to better protect its critical weapons, by ‘blocking’ with the other half of their ‘Mech’s armor and chassis. The two main weapons systems on the ON1-S include a new Defiance product, the Defiance 1001 ER PPC, which first appeared on their Zeus upgrade in 3048. It is paired with a Poland Main Model A, under license from Johnston Industries, making clear Defiance’s interest in developing their own Gauss rifle lines. Two tons of ammunition feed the CASE-protected Gauss Rifle.
By comparison, the left side weapons, while just as cutting-edge, are much shorter-ranged. Four Defiance Streak SRM2 racks, two in the left arm housing, and two in the left torso housing, sip from a single ton of Streak SRM ammo in the CASE-protected right torso. The weapons are quite ammunition efficient, and can potentially hit as hard as the Gauss Rifle if all four weapons systems achieve target lock – by default, each pair of weapons is locked to fire as a set, but the TharHes Ares HM-22 targeting system can readily handle multiple target locks and cascading (as opposed to simultaneous) acquisition and launch.
As a showcase for their newest products, the ON1-S Orion is proving to be a tremendous success for Defiance Industries, leading to a great deal of interest throughout the ranks of the AFFC about upcoming Defiance releases and new ‘Mech designs. Defiance has also released test footage of an ON1-SX refit, available to the AFFC (or interested mercenary buyers) as a special order, highlighting yet another pre-production weapons system: this variant Orion replaces both the ERPPC and the Gauss Rifle (as well as the entire set of right arm actuators) with a short-barreled Long Tom Artillery Cannon, capable of inflicting damage comparable to an AC-20 at ranges of 600 meters, nearly identical to a Gauss Rifle. The tremendous weight and bulk of the LTAC, however, as well as its massive cooling demands (requiring an additional double heat sink in the ON1-SX), suggest that Defiance is looking for ways to create a more efficient big gun in the next generation or two of armaments R&D (indeed, the earliest successful implementation of this concept would see production in 3061 with the release of the Defiance “Hammerfist” Heavy Gauss Rifle, and the Fafnir assault mech in 3063).

The appearance of the ON1-T in the Taurian Concordat has surprised many. The Concordat had not previously produced the Orion or deployed it large numbers so many observers questioned where the mechs had come from. Speculation included that the Concordat had located another lost SLDF cache and which contained the mechs. The truth is much less exciting. With the increasing trade ties between the FWL and the the Concordat, largely due to the efforts of the Alphard Trading Corp, the Concordat was able to license production of the Orion.
Many in the Concordat questioned why the they would license production of the Orion when the TDF already had a significant number of heavy mechs. A quick look at the new ON1-T reveals the reason. The TDF has long lacked assault mechs, being forced to rely on heavy mechs to fill that role. The new Orion has been designed to fill the role of of an assault mech, while still being able to be manufactured at existing factories which are limited to mechs weighing 75 tons or less.
Designed to hold a line at all costs [Editor's Note: This is part of the Protector's wasteful efforts focus on defense against a supposed AFFC invasion], the Orion emphasizes armor and firepower at the expense of speed and mobility. The Vlar 300 engine that formed the heart of the Orion has been replaced with the lighter Warner 225B that is used on the Sabre Aerospace fighter. This smaller engine frees up more mass and space for other improvements.
The weapons array is similar to that of the ON-1K. The main gun remains the Class 10 Autocannon in the torso. However the temperamental KaliYama Class 10 has been replaced with the locally produced Pontiac 50. In field tests this change has removed the feed system's tendency to jam if fully loaded. When pressed to explain why this is no longer an issues, the designers have not been able to come up with an answer. Supporting the Autocannon are a pair of missile racks. For long range firepower, the old 15 tube LRM launcher has been replaced with a Delta Dart 20 tube rack. Taking advantage of the smaller engine, the missile launcher was moved lower in the torso, away from the shoulder. This has reduced the heat build up in the shoulder and eliminating the instanced of the actuator or missile launcher shutting down to due to the heat build up in the area. The 4 tube launcher has been replaced with an experimental Streak Launcher from Pinard Protectorates Limited. While this reduces the number of missiles, it does improve ammo efficiency. In an effort to further increase the firepower of the Orion, both of the Medium Lasers have been replaced with Sunglow Type 2 Large Lasers. This change proved to be a deadly surprise to a pirate force that raided Althea's Choice where the new ON1-T was undergoing field trials. During the battle, which took place at longer ranges, the 2 Orions deployed with the TDF forces ran out of ammo for their Autocannons and LRMs. Thinking them to be easy targets, the raiders then closed on the mechs. At that point the TDF pilots opened fire with their large lasers, scoring several hits on the enemy mechs. Surprised by these attacks, the raiders broke off and fled the planet. Rounding out the weapons are a pair of Hotshot Flamers for use against infantry and vehicles.
The improvements to the mechs weapons necessitated the improvement of the cooling system. Adding 2 heatsinks, the switched to double strength models, allowing it to maintain a high rate of fire. To free up mass for the additional heatsinks, the designers removed 1.5 tons of armor. However by switching to a new Durallex Heavy Ferro-Fibrous armor, they were able to maintain the same level of protection as the original Orion. Lastly a pair of CASE systems were mounted in each torso ammo bin to protect the mech from ammo explosions.

A variant spotted rarely within the Circinus Federation over the past few decades. Outfitted with no lostech the design departs from the commonly seen K variants with the inclusion of the seldom seen Binary Laser Cannon or Blazer as commonly called. Replacing its primary long range weaponry of its long range missiles the design has downgraded the traditional Kali Yama Auto Cannon 10 system with an assortment of brands of Auto Cannon 5 systems, typically those found on either Lyran or League designs. While not heat friendly the design is outfitted with more than the traditional stock engine of the K variant carries allowing for moderate heat expenditures.

Under the radar StarCorps in 3048 acquired the schematics for the Orion from the struggling periphery Diplass Technologies, a once powerful corporation in the days of the Usurper. Exchanging currency as well as assistance in the improving of the remaining Diplass production facilities. StarCorps was able to over the past few years repair and outfit production capability on the planet of Crofton to devote towards the Orion Battlemech. With the ability to utilize rediscovered Lostech technologies the designers have been able to downsize one of their most iconic designs into the 20 ton lighter frame of the Orion. Utilizing existing patents on many of the technologies seen throughout their vast holdings the design was relatively easy to put together once the internal framework was figured out. With Oriente Gauss Rifle and Holli LRM system the design is able remove tons of armor off its opponent at longer ranges and if the opponent is able to survive that its twin Harmon medium lasers and locally sourced Harpoon-6 missile system will exploit any holes in them quickly. While more pricey then other designs in its weight class due to the inclusion of the Vlar 300XL engine the Federated Commonwealth has quickly gobbled up the first few production runs to fill the holes left in their forces due to the Clan invasion.

Overview
Following the Fourth Succession War, the Wolf’s Dragoons settled on Outreach and developed their own world with the installation among others of Blackwell Heavy Industries. Eager to display their resilience and their success, the mercenary units requested, in a move that wasn’t fully understood at that time, an upgrade of the Orion, General Kerensky’s ‘Mech.
Capabilities
On the surface, the ON2-BHI doesn’t look really different from the classical Orion but a closer look shows that is a different beast.
Packing an Ultra AC/5, that increases the range while giving the same damage capacity as the original AC/10, backed by a trio of LRM-5, this long-range fire support ‘Mech is equally at ease at closer ranges with the SRM-4 having been replaced by 4 Medium Lasers arranged in the same way with the cooling system integrated in the 2 empty racks in the arm.
All these weapons along with the ammo and the CASE to protect it were given by Federated companies as a further proof of the bond between House Davion and the Wolf’s Dragoons.
The use of these weapons (and most of all of the Medium Lasers) is only possible thanks to the use of 11 Double Heat Sinks that barely keep the Orion running cool enough to bring its guns in battle.
All these changes allow the new Orion to perform efficiently at all ranges, blending into every combat style or battle plans. The only problem that some might face is its lack of heavy weapon able to finish its opponent with one shot but for a pure team member this is not a problem.
Battle History
I'll stand by you
Take me in, into your darkest hour
And I'll never desert you
I'll stand by you
I'll stand by you
Won't let nobody hurt you
This is how to best describe the job of the ON2-BH1 which battle after battle is there for its lance mate. An example happened during the assault by the Wild Geese on Blackjack.
Thanks to its generous supply of ammo and abundant laser weapons, a ON2-BHI piloted by ‘MechWarrior Patrick Dillon stayed behind in the Fire Lances and managed to protect them against a determined attack by elements from Clan Jade Falcon. Using their honour system to take the attackers one by one (a bit like Kai Allard-Liao on Twycross) and alternating between long range fire and fight at close range, he managed to slow down the Clanners enough to let the fire support units take a new and better position to destroy the attackers. Upon receiving the first massed shots, the jade Falcons quickly reacted and destroyed the ON2-BHI in front of them with all the might of their superior weapons but it was too late to save them.
Variants
The next step was a logical one that went along many of the upgrades made in the Inner Sphere. Using a Vlar 300XL Engine allowed the use of a locally produced Grizzard Gauss Rifle together with a Sunglow Binary Laser Canon with the rest of the weapons being a lot like the ON2-BHI (the most notable exception being the use of only 2 LRM-5), except for the use of Ferro-Fibrous to lighten the weight of its protection.
Some speculations are going on around the newly locally produced weapons with some saying that the newest Orion is just a test bed for a more advanced ‘Mech that Blackwell Heavy Industries will soon be producing but so far nothing has been seen.
Deployment
Blackwell Industries sells its retrofit kits of the Orion only to units or individuals approved by the Wolf’s Dragoons, going as far as to offer the complete upgrade in its installations to those rewarded by the mercenary units.
The ON2-BHI is more commonly spread in the Inner Sphere and the Periphery while only a handful of ON3-BHI can be seen outside of the Wolf’s Dragoons.
Notable ‘MechWarriors
Phoenix, the ‘Mech of ‘MechWarrior Sylvan Greenspan, was twice the first ‘Mech of the new retrofits made by Blackwell Heavy Industries and has been given as a reward to ‘MechWarriors of the Wolf’s Dragoons that were on the fast track to being promoted to officers. In spite of being constantly used and of the damage it may suffer, the tech teams take special pride in keeping the tradition alive of the phoenix rising each morning from its hangar in an immaculate state.
Its last action was in the team building sessions following the Outreach summit where it lead a Star of Dragoons in spite of not being retrofitted with Clan tech.

Two interesting variations Ice!!
-
Final day for entries of the optimized Orion!
-
Three hours left!!!
-
No entries for me this round as I've pulled my two posts due to lack of fluff a bit earlier. I'm just finding it harder to come up with something original besides the boring 'tech swap' type-posts I've been writing lately. I think there will be few entries from from here on out. Boredom with the inner sphere designs with way too much repetitive effort on my part. With about a nine or so designs left, this part of the contest won't be over another four to five months or so and judging is even further behind as Takiro (who I know is probably a busy man) has just finished up the 50-tonners. It's hard for me to remain engaged or excited. Now, I go back to watching the impressively boring Olympics coverage by NBC.

Okay folks, we are all done with heavies. No more entries please!

Yeah looking back I have very few entries for judgements in the next 20 tons of competitions. Either no ideas or to many other similar ones available
