Re: Optimizing the Orion

Originally I tried this with an Ultra AC-5, but the thing just isn't optimized at all.  Instead I saved 4 tons by swapping in a PPC, and although the thing can overheat now, it's much more effective and reliable overall.  Plus I got to attribute the design to Team Banzai, which is a win.

Type: ON1-D Orion
Production: Federated Commonwealth (Banzai Weapons Design Company refit, New Avalon)
Combat Value: 1867 BV
Total Cost: 7,579,250 C-Bills (including x1.75 tonnage premium)

Internal Struc (Std): 7.5t
Engine: Vlar 300: 19t
  Walking: 4
  Running: 6 (8.)
Heat Sinks: 10(20)
Gyro/Cockpit (std): 6t
Armor Factor (Ferro): 13t (231-max pips)

Head 3/9
Center Torso 23/36/10
R/L Torso 16/22/10
R/L Arm 12/24
R/L Leg 16/32

Quirk: Anti-Aircraft Targeting, Easy to Maintain, Rugged (1)

1x PPC (3cr, 7t) RT
1x MASC (4cr, 4t) RT
3x SRM-6+Artemis (9cr, 12t) 2LT/LA
4x Ammo (SRM) 60 (4cr, 4t) LT
1x CASE (1cr, 0.5t) LT
2x Medium Lasers (2cr, 2t) RA/LA

One of several proposed “field refit” upgrade packages for the AFFC’s venerable Orion heavy ‘Mechs, the ON1-D variant was designed by the famed Banzai Weapons Design Company.  It appears to be the brain-child of Dr Anna Banzai, daughter of the mysterious ‘Mechwarrior and engineer Dr. B Banzai, leader of the elite mercenary unit Team Banzai.  The actual sourcing of components largely comes from New Avalon-based partner firms, all of whom have teamed with Banzai Weapons Design in the past.

The “field refit” transforms the Orion into a close-range brawler, with just a single long-ranged weapon, a right-torso mounted Magna Hellstar PPC, sourced from Corean Enterprises.  The missile racks were all replaced with Harpoon-6 SRM racks, sourced from Lycomb-Davion IntroTech, and mated to Artemis IV fire-control systems and the Sync-Tracker 39-42071 targeting system from Corean Enterprises (specifically taken from their Valkyrie lines).  The two arm-mounted medium lasers were retained, but replaced with compact ChisComp 39 Medium Lasers, supplied by Archenar Battlemechs, from their Dervish lines.  Also from Archernar is a new carapace of StarGuard Ferro-Fibrous armor, with thirteen tons providing comparable protection as the classic Orion, with integrated StarGuard CASE for the four tons of SRM ammunition.  Ten double heat sinks, all integrated into the existing Vlar 300 fusion engine, give the ON1-D double the heat dissipation of the Succession Wars era design, but still struggle to handle heat spikes from all weapons.  The ON1-D is intended to be used as a ‘bracket-fire’ unit, and the PPC is expected to be utilized only sparingly when at close ranges.

The final touch is the use of General Motors Type B Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry, produced on Kathil as a special order for the “field refit kit”.  The inclusion of MASC gives the Orion bursts of speed up to 85kph, comparable to Clan heavy cavalry designs, and giving it the chance to close to its preferred close range attacks.   The partition of the large left-torso ammunition bin for the SRMs was intended to allow the ON1-D to load a mix of variant missile types: NAIS and Team Banzai have noted that Inferno missiles tend to work exceptionally well against Clan battle-armor, and initial tests of the newly developed Tandem-Charge missiles suggests that they could also be useful against Clan ‘Mech and battle-armor alike.

« Reply #16 on: July 23, 2021, 10:39:27 AM »

Here's the all-energy build that two of the Orion quirks (rugged, easy to maintain) favor.  I really wanted to make this a ComGuard 'mech, and it's loosely based on the Clanbuster Black Knight, but just couldn't find the fluff for it in 3053.  By 3070, this would be a totally viable Word of Blake design, but in 3053, it's really only the Confederation or Combine that could do this, and the Combine has a massive double heat sink shortage and hasn't finished development of the No-Dachi...so Confederation it is.  Given the astronomical price of the refit, you can see why they might develop a 60-ton melee 'Mech (the impressive Ti Ts'ang) instead of a heavier design, not that the Ti Ts'ang is all that cheap at 15M C-Bills itself.

Type: ON3-L Orion  “Shen”
Production: Capellan Confederation (Bergan Industries refit, Ares)
Combat Value: 1953 BV
Total Cost: 19,881,750 C-Bills (including x1.75 tonnage premium)

Internal Struc (Endo): 4t
Engine: Ford 375XL: 19.5t
  Walking: 5 (6)
  Running: 8 (9)
Heat Sinks: 15(30): 5t
Gyro/Cockpit (std): 7t
Armor Factor (Std): 14.5t (231-max pips)

Head 3/9
Center Torso 23/36/10
R/L Torso 16/22/10
R/L Arm 12/24
R/L Leg 16/32

Quirk: Anti-Aircraft Targeting, Easy to Maintain, Rugged (1)

1x Hatchet (5cr, 5t) RA
1x PPC (3cr, 7t) RT
1x TAG (1cr, 1t) H
1x Large Laser (2cr, 5t) LT
7x Medium Lasers (7cr, 7t) 3LT/4LA
1x Triple-Strength Myomer (6cr) 2RA/2RL/2LL

After perfecting the formula for Triple-Strength Myomers in 3050, Bergan Industries of Ares initially struggled to find ways to utilize and market their (admittedly very expensive) product.  As primarily a producer of light ‘bug’ mechs, Bergan was not producing war machines that could best showcase the Triple Strength Myomer, so looked into creating factory refit designs that could both promote the material, while also bringing in more business and expertise, particularly with heavier ‘Mech designs.

The ON3-L is one such offering, chosen by Bergan because of its rugged design, and the open framework making it both easy to maintain, and also relatively easy to modify (as ‘Mechwarriors through the centuries have noticed).  They completely rebuilt the GM Marauder chassis, using Earthwerk STG II Endo-Steel, already being produced at their Ares facility for their upgraded Stingers, then rebuilding the myomer bundles of the ‘Mech from the ground up, using their Triple Strength Myomers.  Given the localized nickname of “Shen” (the Chinese name for the Orion constellation, from ancient Terra), the redesignated ON3-L (a pun based on the fact that Shen, the Hunter, is written with the Chinese character for ‘three’, for the number of stars on his belt) can consistently move at speeds of 85kph due to its Ford 375 extra light fusion engine, manufactured on Terra by Ford Military Ltd, but purchased in limited special order quantities for these upgrades.  However, Bergan’s TSM boost the Orion to a blistering 96kph when heated and engaged – swiftly enough to pace lighter scouts and able to run circles around heavier ‘Mechs.  Fifteen double heat sinks, all integrated into the massive engine block, allow the ‘Mech to dissipate (or even modulate and maintain, by configuring which sinks are turned ‘on’ or ‘off’) a sizable amount of weapons and movement heat.

The design adds a right hand actuator to the Orion, wielding a fearsome hatchet, capable of cleaving through a light ‘Mech in a single blow, and making it a significant melee threat.  In order to heat up and keep the TSM engaged, the “Shen” strips out the bulky and ammunition-dependent autocannon and missile racks of the classic Orion, and is instead equipped with an array of energy weapons.  Bergan was able to provide the seven Martell medium lasers from its own facility, with four in the left arm housing, giving a real “laser punch”, and three more clustered around a Martell large laser in the left torso, in place of the LRMs of the classic Orion.  Bergan does source the right torso Ceres Arms Smasher PPC from Ceres Metals, the single long-ranged weapons system on the swift-moving “Shen” ON3-L.  A head-mounted Apple Churchill 442x TAG unit, also sourced from Ceres Metals, sits in the head of the ‘Mech just below the cockpit.

This new design came as a nasty surprise to opponents of those McCarron’s Armored Cavalry units fielding the fast-moving heavy melee design in the early years of the Third Marik Civil War.  League pilots, expecting the Orion to act in a fire-support role, were not expecting a speedy and brutal melee design, and appeared similarly confounded when attempting to avoid melee, and realized that the ON3-L is nearly as comfortable in close-range brawls.  Although the design requires a fairly skilled ‘Mechwarrior, in order to take full advantage of its capabilities, it is already inspiring Confederation armaments manufacturers to work on developing native designs that can mimic some of the “Shen’s” impressive capabilities.

Thought about doing a Blackwell Wolf's Dragoons model but they just came out with the War Dog, which I like but could be tweaked as well.

A Clan Buster variant might work as they used the 300XL engine for most of them

A lesser seen Clan Buster variant outfitted by ComStar for the battle on Tukkayyid the Orion CB is a well rounded design that should be considered for future full production by some great power. With the inclusion of the tonnage saving though bulky XL engine Comstar engineers have turned the generalist role into a more sniper or missile boat design. With twin Doombud LRM-15s and its Imperator Code Red LB 10-X Autocannon the design is more then efficient at medium to long ranges. Backed by four Martell medium lasers the design has satisfactory short range support for any 'Mechs that are able to approach within the designs missiles minimum ranges. While only 20 of these designs were able to upgraded in time for the battle, 16 of the 20 were able to make it back on their own legs or as viable salvage.

A really simple upgrade, but a low-cost (and low-BV) upgrade that makes the Orion a nasty brawler.  Useful for a Periphery power, I'm thinking.

Type: ON1-MC Orion
Production: Magistracy of Canopus (Majesty Metals and Manufacturing refit, Dunianshire)
Combat Value: 1444 BV
Total Cost: 6,737,500 C-Bills (including x1.75 tonnage premium)

Internal Struc (Endo): 4t
Engine: Vlar 300: 19t
  Walking: 4
  Running: 6
Heat Sinks:   15(30): 5t
Gyro/Cockpit (std): 6t
Armor Factor (Std): 14.5t (231-max pips)

Head 3/9
Center Torso 23/36/10
R/L Torso 16/22/10
R/L Arm 12/24
R/L Leg 16/32

Quirk: Anti-Aircraft Targeting, Easy to Maintain, Rugged (1)

1x PPC (3cr, 7t) RT
6x SRM4 (6cr, 12t) RA/4LT/LA
5x Ammo (SRM) 125 (5cr, 5t) LT
1x CASE (1cr, 0.5t) LT
2x Medium Lasers (2cr, 2t) RA/LA

Following the disaster that was the Andurien Succession, Magestrix Emma Centrella ascended to the Magisterial Throne in 3040 intendeding to normalize relations with the Free Worlds League, and attempt to rebuild and expand her nation’s economy.  One priority was finding ways to produce effective ‘Mechs within the Magistracy, without growing dependent on untrustworthy and militaristic Coreward nations like the League or Confederation.  Although the Magistracy produces a number of native ‘Mech designs, the Magistracy Armed Forces was interested in upgrading their existing ‘Mech units with as many lostech materials as possible – and refit priority was given first to trooper and heavy ‘Mech designs, which were expected to see both the biggest benefits.

Due to their proximity (and infrequent conflicts) with the Free Worlds League over the centuries, the MAF fields quite a number of ON1-K Orions, and Majesty Metals and Manufacturing was contracted to upgrade the machines, some of which were several centuries old.  MMM’s Dunianshire facility was chosen as the primary refit location, and MMM attempted to integrate as many lostech components as they could produce, into the upgraded Orion.  The redesignated ON1-MC thus features a massive and reinforced Earthwerks SHD II Endo Steel chassis, and equips fifteen “freezer” double heat sinks, with three of the bulky sinks fitted into the cavernous torso.  The weapons load-out was completely revamped, with a massive “Parti-Kill Heavy” PPC (from MMM’s Manticore line) in the right torso, and two Martel Medium 5 Lasers replacing the  original or replacement lasers in each arm.

As part of the upgrade, the ancient Irian Orator-5K comms and Wasat Aggressor Type 5 targeting systems were stripped out and replaced with a new O-P 300 Commset and O-P 2000A target & tracking system, both pulled from MMM-Dunianshire’s long-standing Shadow Hawk production lines.  Fourteen and a half tons of the Shadow Hawk’s Maxmillian 43 standard-grade armor was also used to replace the Orion’s existing armor plating, and Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment was incorporated into the left torso, to protect the five ton ammunition bin.  Finally, the ON1-MC is equipped with six Shannon-Fore SRM launchers, with one each wrapped around the medium laser in each forearm housing (mirrored left and right), in the classic Orion arrangement, and four SRM4 launchers in the left torso housing.  With a massive 125 salvos of short-range missiles in its left torso ammunition bin, this Orion can utterly shred at brawling ranges – it has roughly half the close-range firepower of the feared SRM Carrier, but with greater speed and significantly greater armored protection.

Since the first ON1-MC upgrades have been redeployed to Canopian line units, the MAF has been been experimenting with alternate missile types, and typically fields one ton of Inferno or Smoke missiles in most combat situations, and has been working on reverse engineering Tandem-Charge and Fragmentation designs, as these warhead types are expected to be quite effective against irregular (= pirate) forces most commonly faced by Magistracy units.

Bradshaw, that's a pretty nice Clanbuster, a really nice fire-support unit.  But what I meant was that I was trying to create a 5/8 speed melee mech with Hatchet that also had triple-strength myomer, plus 'future-proof' the design by include 2.5 tons of electronics so that the thing could readily swap in some C3i when ComStar and the Blakists get that technology developed.  ComStar has access to the necessary 375XL engine, but doesn't have easy access to Triple-Strength Myomers until the 3060s, so that meant that if I wanted a TSM-equipped melee 'Mech in 3053, I was stuck with either the Capellans (Bergan-Ares) or Combine (Cosby Research).

I think this is the last concept (technically two of them) from me.  The ON1-SX is clearly a precursor to the Heavy Gauss Rifle equipped monsters that Defiance starts churning out in the 3060s.  The ON1-S is just a solid fire-support 'Mech, though not terribly flashy.  In all cases, I tried to feature Defiance produced weapons that were not yet on full production 'Mechs, but which would have been available in their final production form by 3053.

Type: ON1-S and ON1-SX Orion
Production: Federated Commonwealth (Defiance Industries refit, Hesperus)
Combat Value: 1871 BV (ON1-S); 1656 BV (ON1-SX)
Total Cost: 7,105,000 C-Bills (ON1-S); 7,203,000 C-Bills (ON1-SX)

Internal Struc (Endo): 4t
Engine: Vlar 300: 19t
  Walking: 4
  Running: 6
Heat Sinks: 10(20)
Gyro/Cockpit (std): 6t
Armor Factor (Std): 14.5t (231-max pips)

Head 3/9
Center Torso 23/36/10
R/L Torso 16/22/10
R/L Arm 12/24
R/L Leg 16/32

Quirk: Anti-Aircraft Targeting, Easy to Maintain, Rugged (1)

WEAPONS (ON1-S)
1x ER PPC (3cr, 7t) RA
1x Gauss Rifle (7cr, 15t) RT
2x Ammo (Gauss) 16 (2cr, 2t) RT
1x Ammo (Streak) 50 (1cr, 1t) RT
1x CASE (1cr, 0.5t) RT
4x Streak SRM-2 (4cr, 6t) 2LT/2LA

WEAPONS (ON1-SX)
1x Long Tom Art. Cannon (15cr, 20t) 10RA/5RT
3x Ammo (LTAC) 15 (3cr, 3t) RT
1x Ammo (Streak) 50 (1cr, 1t) RT
1x CASE (1cr, 0.5t) RT
4x Streak SRM-2 (4cr, 6t) 2LT/2LA
+1 Double Heat Sink (0cr, 1t) -engine-

Throughout the centuries, the Lyran Commonwealth half of the Federated Commonwealth acquired quite a number of Orion ON1-K heavy ‘Mechs, either as battlefield salvage, or by purchasing surplus and used chassis from the Free Worlds League’s secondary arms market.  Following the Clan Invasion, as the AFFC scrambled to rebuild their shattered ‘Mech forces, the Orion was seen as one of the ‘Mechs needing an upgrade, as the mid-ranged brawler had performed miserably against speedier, and longer-ranged, Clan forces.  Defiance Industries’ proposal was among the most intriguing, and as one of the major arms manufacturers of the Commonwealth (with long-standing ties to the military procurement bureaucracy), their ON1-S proposal was quickly green-lit, with refits at their Hesperus facility proceeding apace by the middle of 3053.

Defiance clearly approached the refit contract as an opportunity to test out their latest lostech developments, starting with a bulky Chariot Type IV Endo-Steel frame that appeared to be slightly oversized as a chassis for the Orion (a nearly identical design would be used for their Salamander 80t assault ‘Mech, which would release a year later in 3054).  All heat sinks were replaced with double-strength “freezers”, and the ancient comms and targeting systems were replaced with a matched TharHes HM-22 commset and targeting system, both taken from their new Battle Hawk line, both comparable to the 26th-century electronics on the older ON1-K models.  Fourteen and a half tons of “Glasgow Limited”-branded ‘Mech armor, with integrated CASE protection, replace the existing armored plating, and retaining the peerless armored protection that defines the Orion line of heavy ‘Mechs.

All weapons systems on the older Orions were removed to make way for Defiance Industries replacements.  The ‘Mech is assymmetrical, in that its long-ranged weapons are both on the right half, while its short-ranged weapons are on the left half; this is intended to allow ‘Mechwarriors to torso-twist the ‘Mech to better protect its critical weapons, by ‘blocking’ with the other half of their ‘Mech’s armor and chassis.  The two main weapons systems on the ON1-S include a new Defiance product, the Defiance 1001 ER PPC, which first appeared on their Zeus upgrade in 3048.  It is paired with a Poland Main Model A, under license from Johnston Industries, making clear Defiance’s interest in developing their own Gauss rifle lines.  Two tons of ammunition feed the CASE-protected Gauss Rifle.

By comparison, the left side weapons, while just as cutting-edge, are much shorter-ranged.  Four Defiance Streak SRM2 racks, two in the left arm housing, and two in the left torso housing, sip from a single ton of Streak SRM ammo in the CASE-protected right torso.  The weapons are quite ammunition efficient, and can potentially hit as hard as the Gauss Rifle if all four weapons systems achieve target lock – by default, each pair of weapons is locked to fire as a set, but the TharHes Ares HM-22 targeting system can readily handle multiple target locks and cascading (as opposed to simultaneous) acquisition and launch.

As a showcase for their newest products, the ON1-S Orion is proving to be a tremendous success for Defiance Industries, leading to a great deal of interest throughout the ranks of the AFFC about upcoming Defiance releases and new ‘Mech designs.  Defiance has also released test footage of an ON1-SX refit, available to the AFFC (or interested mercenary buyers) as a special order, highlighting yet another pre-production weapons system: this variant Orion replaces both the ERPPC and the Gauss Rifle (as well as the entire set of right arm actuators) with a short-barreled Long Tom Artillery Cannon, capable of inflicting damage comparable to an AC-20 at ranges of 600 meters, nearly identical to a Gauss Rifle.  The tremendous weight and bulk of the LTAC, however, as well as its massive cooling demands (requiring an additional double heat sink in the ON1-SX), suggest that Defiance is looking for ways to create a more efficient big gun in the next generation or two of armaments R&D (indeed, the earliest successful implementation of this concept would see production in 3061 with the release of the Defiance “Hammerfist” Heavy Gauss Rifle, and the Fafnir assault mech in 3063).

Re: Optimizing the Orion
« Reply #25 on: July 24, 2021, 09:17:24 AM »

The appearance of the ON1-T in the Taurian Concordat has surprised many.  The Concordat had not previously produced the Orion or deployed it large numbers so many observers questioned where the mechs had come from.  Speculation included that the Concordat had located another lost SLDF cache and which contained the mechs. The truth is much less exciting.  With the increasing trade ties between the FWL and the the Concordat, largely due to the efforts of the Alphard Trading Corp, the Concordat was able to license production of the Orion.

Many in the Concordat questioned why the they would license production of the Orion when the TDF already had a significant number of heavy mechs.  A quick look at the new ON1-T reveals the reason.  The TDF has long lacked assault mechs, being forced to rely on heavy mechs to fill that role.  The new Orion has been designed to fill the role of of an assault mech, while still being able to be manufactured at existing factories which are limited to mechs weighing 75 tons or less.

Designed to hold a line at all costs [Editor's Note: This is part of the Protector's wasteful efforts focus on defense against a supposed AFFC invasion], the Orion emphasizes armor and firepower at the expense of speed and mobility.  The Vlar 300 engine that formed the heart of the Orion has been replaced with the lighter Warner 225B that is used on the Sabre Aerospace fighter.  This smaller engine frees up more mass and space for other improvements.

The weapons array is similar to that of the ON-1K.  The main gun remains the Class 10 Autocannon in the torso. However the temperamental KaliYama Class 10 has been replaced with the locally produced Pontiac 50.  In field tests this change has removed the feed system's tendency to jam if fully loaded.  When pressed to explain why this is no longer an issues, the designers have not been able to come up with an answer. Supporting the Autocannon are a pair of missile racks. For long range firepower, the old 15 tube LRM launcher has been replaced with a Delta Dart 20 tube rack. Taking advantage of the smaller engine, the missile launcher was moved lower in the torso, away from the shoulder. This has reduced the heat build up in the shoulder and eliminating the instanced of the actuator or missile launcher shutting down to due to the heat build up in the area.  The 4 tube launcher has been replaced with an experimental Streak Launcher from Pinard Protectorates Limited. While this reduces the number of missiles, it does improve ammo efficiency.  In an effort to further increase the firepower of the Orion, both of the Medium Lasers have been replaced with Sunglow Type 2 Large Lasers.  This change proved to be a deadly surprise to a pirate force that raided Althea's Choice where the new ON1-T was undergoing field trials. During the battle, which took place at longer ranges, the 2 Orions deployed with the TDF forces ran out of ammo for their Autocannons and LRMs.  Thinking them to be easy targets, the raiders then closed on the mechs. At that point the TDF pilots opened fire with their large lasers, scoring several hits on the enemy mechs.  Surprised by these attacks, the raiders broke off and fled the planet.  Rounding out the weapons are a pair of Hotshot Flamers for use against infantry and vehicles.

The improvements to the mechs weapons necessitated the improvement of the cooling system.  Adding 2 heatsinks, the switched to double strength models, allowing it to maintain a high rate of fire.  To free up mass for the additional heatsinks, the designers removed 1.5 tons of armor. However by switching to a new Durallex Heavy Ferro-Fibrous armor, they were able to maintain the same level of protection as the original Orion.  Lastly a pair of CASE systems were mounted in each torso ammo bin to protect the mech from ammo explosions.

I am sure that Ice Hellion is mulling over a potential entry or two. Bradshaw and Abele got to finish off their fluff. Anyone else jumping in?
