Optimizing the Ostroc
« on: January 31, 2021, 06:06:21 PM »

Welcome to the Roc! Our thirty third optima (kicking off a little early because of the impending snow storm) brings us the second of the so-called Ost series which graced the original Technical Readouts, the Ostroc. Likely most of your entries will be refits rather than new Ost builds but you never know what is possible till I read it. Go back and take a look at the Eleventh Contest for the Ostscout which had three winners for some Ost inspiration but don’t forget the Great Ost-pansion either! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a Mech of the Week on the main forums to provide us with a little more inspiration but the always dependable BattleTechWiki has a link for you below.

Ostroc – BattleTechWiki
https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Ostroc

Design Criteria
Design: Ostroc Heavy BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 60 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday February 12th 2021 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

First of two.  The Ostmann series is perfect for MRMs, but unfortunately that's outside the purview of this design contest, so I'm trying to create a preceding design that can be readily upgraded to MRMs in the late 3050s.  In the meantime, here's my other idea.  Hoping I'm not stepping on Abele's toes here, but the Ostroc really is perfect for this:

Type: OSR-6C Ostroc
Production: ComStar (Krupp Armament Works, Terra)
Combat Value: 1598 BV
Total Cost: 11,384,960 C-Bills (including x1.6 tonnage premium)

EQUIPMENT
Tonnage: 60
Internal Structure: 6t
Engine: Vlar 300 XL: 9.5t
  Walking: 5
  Running: 8
Heat Sinks:17(34) DHS: 7t
Gyro: Standard: 3t
Cockpit: Standard: 3t
Armor (Ferro): 189: 10.5

Head   (3/9)
Center Torso (20/30/8)
R/L Torso (14/20/7)
R/L Arm (10/16)
R/L Leg (14/28)

Quirks: Narrow/Low Profile (glancing blows on +0/+1 margin)

WEAPONS INVENTORY
2x Binary Lasers (8cr, 18t) (RT/LT)
3x Medium Lasers   (3cr, 3t) (RT/CT/LT)

One of the legacy Mech chassis available to ComStar on the eve of the Battle of Tukayyid, the Ostroc had one significant advantage so far as the ComGuard was concerned: it was one of three classes of ‘Mech that were ideal for upgrading with their huge cache of Star-League era Vlar 300XL engines.  With its standard 300 Vlar easily substituted for the extra-light engine, the Ostroc-2Cr “Royals” in the ComGuard were fitted with the hardest-hitting weapons that the organization could scrounge up: a pair of Binary Laser Cannons, swapping out for the ER Large Lasers of the -2Cr.  Three double heat sinks were added to the -2Cr’s fourteen, to maximize the heat-dissipation of this hot-running design, allowing the newly designated -6C to fire nearly a full alpha-strike every few seconds, as it was expected to do as it reached engagement range.  Although given the option to upgrade the Medium Lasers to ER versions, ComStar’s Battlemech engineers demurred, arguing that the heat loads would outweigh the limited range benefit, and the factory-OEM Fuersturm-B’s would be far more efficient.

To reduce the risk of an ammunition explosion, one of the original 2C’s major weaknesses, the SRM-4 was swapped out  for a third medium laser, mounted in the center torso, and the “Royal’s” ferro-fibrous protection was bulked up considerably, carrying 94% of the ‘Mech’s theoretical maximum.  This resolved the 2C’s second significant weakness, one that had been only partially mitigated by the use of ferro-fibrous armor in the 2Cr “Royal”.  The result is a mobile cavalry ‘Mech that has the speed and armor to get within its preferred 300m combat range, and able to deliver a consistent barrage once it gets there.

On Tukayyid, the 6C saw reasonable success – when able to close to its preferred ranges, it absolutely devastated its more thinly-armored Clan adversaries.  Several clans (like Wolf and Ghost Bear) heavily prioritized identifying and eliminating hard-punching brawlers like the 6C, but its decent armored protection meant that it could absorb a real beating before being disabled, drawing fire away from lance-mates and disrupting Clan lines of battle, before rapidly withdrawing as part of Precentor Martial Focht’s hit-and-run grand strategy – then repeating the process again shortly thereafter.  Given the success of the design, Krupp Armament Works was contracted to begin limited production runs of the 6C following the Truce, and the venerable armaments firm cannibalized some of the Ostroc-6C’s components (such as the Vlar 300 XL engine and ferro-fibrous armor)  in order to get a jumpstart on designing the Raijin RJN101-A.  The Ostroc 6C has seen modest but on-going use in the ComGuard since, with many younger pilots impressed by both its aggressive tactical doctrine as well as its reputation as a successful “Clanbuster” design.

Having my cake and eating it, too.  Proto-MRMs with a 3053 appropriate date, and a write-up of the MRM Ostroc that I envisioned snuck into the description :)  Note that dead-fire missiles have an introduction date of 3050 or 3052, depending on source.

Type: OSR-3L Ostroc
Production: Capellan Commonwealth (Ceres Metal Industries, Capella)
Combat Value: 1555 BV
Total Cost: 5,624,960 C-Bills (including x1.6 tonnage premium)

EQUIPMENT
Tonnage: 60
Internal Struc: Endo: 3t
Engine (Vlar 300): 19t
  Walking: 5
  Running: 8
Heat Sinks:   10(20) DHS
Gyro (Standard0: 3t
Cockpit (Standard): 3t
Armor (Standard): 144: 9t

Head   (3/8)
Center Torso (20/22/6)
R/L Torso (14/22/4)
R/L Arm (10/8)
R/L Leg (14/20)

Quirks: Narrow/Low Profile (glancing blows on +0/+1 margin)

WEAPONS INVENTORY
2x LRM-15s (6cr/14t) RT/LT
4x Ammo (LRM-DF) 32 (4cr/4t) 2RT/2LT
2x CASE (2cr/1t) RT/LT
4x Medium Lasers (4cr/4t)

Technically an early prototype design, the Ostroc-3L did see limited production in the mid to late 3050s, as a proof-of-concept design intended to demonstrate the firm’s mastery of Star League technologies from the Helm Memory Core.  The -3L did not use an extra-light engine, as the costs were seen as prohibitive for a test concept that might never be funded by the Capellan state, but it did integrate an endo-steel frame in the company’s newly expanded Ceresplex orbital manufactory over Capella.  Also included was a fully engine-integrated set of Ceres-branded double-strength heat sinks, and a set of Star-League designed “Starshield” Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment.  This did require the use of ammunition, which was yet another reason the Ostroc was selected for the upgrade (along with the company’s flagship Vindicator line).

However, Ceres had struggled to perfect its ER Large Laser design (the company eventually admitted defeat and ended attempts to produce an in-house variant, instead licensing a Martel design in the mid-3060s, as seen on their production Ostroc-4L), and their Large Pulse Laser production never made it past the initial prototypes.  Their Sian/Ceres “Jaguar” brand of Long-Range-Missile, however, manufactured in partnership with Hellespont Industrials on Sian, was looking to expand market share in the Confederation, and had begun trials of their LRM-10, 15, and 20 packages.  In combination with the new CASE technology, the existing Ostroc line was seen as an ideal testbed and showcase for the re-designated -3L (prototype).

Apart from the endo-steel frame and double heat sinks, the -3L is almost identical to the original -2C design, including the weak arm armor and thin rear armor, both unpopular with ‘Mechwarriors.  The biggest change instead comes from replacing the Feursturm-A large lasers of the -2C; instead the -3L torso mounts a pair of the new Sian/Ceres “Jaguar” LRM-15s, fed by four tons of ammunition split between two CASE-protected bins.  The design uses four Ceres Arms Medium Lasers in place of the original Feursturm-B designs, doubling the short-range firepower of the Ostroc, and placing two of the lasers into the arms, to give the ‘Mech slightly greater field of fire, and the ability to protect its rear (an ability lacking in the original -2C).  The design team intended the heavier array of short-ranged weapons to mimic a Quickdraw or Blackjack, giving the ‘Mech a sizable punch should opponents try to sneak into the minimum range of the LRM missiles.

The biggest tactical and logistical innovation, however, was the decision to equip the -3L with dead-fire missiles as standard, rather than the traditional bombardment-range LRM missiles, a novel technology that had been shared by the Draconis Combine during the Clan Invasion.  Although the DF-missiles feature a shorter engagement range of just 450 meters (as compared to the standard 630 meters) and are less accurate than standard missiles due the lack of internal guidance systems, in exchange they pack effectively twice the punch of the standard LRM, and are much cheaper to produce.  The ‘reduced’ range was actually comparable to the range of the standard Large Lasers of the -2C, while the expected (and potential) damage was considerably greater, making the Ostroc-3L a fearsome brawler.

Ceres hoped that the lower logistical costs of the DF missile would appeal to the CCAF in the next round of post-Tukayyid procurement trials.  They were also planning to get a jump on developer Luthien Armor Works, who appeared to have been too preoccupied by the Clans to take advantage of the potential of this new weapons system fully.  Of course, in 3058, LAW would release the MRM family of launchers with improved dead-fire technology, rendering DF missiles largely obsolete.  Subsequently, Ceres would transfer their Deadfire missile production in their entirety to Menke A&A, and begin production of a Medium-Range-Missile system in partnership with Hellespont, ultimately resulting in the Sian/Ceres “Puma” series, which would be featured on the full production Ostroc-5L.  Produced in tandem with their Martell ER Large Laser equipped -4L Stealth on Capella, the -5L is also a Stealth design intended for service in CCAF “Shadow Lances”, featuring MRM-30s in place of the LRM-15 dead-fires, dropping from four medium lasers to two ER medium lasers in order to equip an ECM, and adding an additional half ton for protection for a total of 9.5 tons of Ceres “Durralex-Heavy” brand Stealth armor.  However, this variant did not begin production until 3069, and the ravages of the Jihad limited total numbers manufactured until full-scale production could resume in the 3080s.

Ostroc OSR-3W

Mass: 60 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Age of War/Star League
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/E-F-D-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 5,360,960 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,394

Chassis: Ost-II Standard
Power Plant: Vlar 300 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 54.0 km/h
Maximum Speed: 86.4 km/h
Jump Jets: None
    Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: Valiant Lamellor Standard Armor w/ CASE
Armament:
    2 Magna Mk.III Large Lasers
    1 Holly SRM-4 w/ Artemis IV FCS
    2 Magna Mk.II Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: Blackwell Industries
    Primary Factory: Outreach
Communications System: Dalban Micronics
Targeting and Tracking System: Dalban Hi-Rez II

Overview:
As the Wolf Dragoons rebuilt following the Fourth Succession War they were also settling into their new landhold of Outreach, bringing in long-time partners Blackwell to rebuild the factories there. While Blackwell could already build the Marauder II, these large and expensive 'Mechs weren't ideal for the Dragoons as they began re-establishing their line regiments.

In 3033, a crack team of lawyers managed to unravel the licensing rights for Ostmann Industries trademark heavy 'Mech despite a ferocious rearguard contest by ComStar's legal department. Jaime Wolf wryly likened the victory to the viciously fought battle of New Delos in 3015 when he rewarded Blackwell with the promised schematics that would allow the production of new chassis in the Harlech factory.

Capabilities:
The new Ostroc uses the same basic chassis and engine as the original model, although Blackwell elected to use other components that were more available, mostly using electronics, armour and weapons from the Marauder II.

Observers noticed that the Dragoons ran their Ostroc's rather aggressively, not realising until 3051 that Blackwell had been allowed double heatsink technology by their partners, a very well kept secret. This decision freed up tonnage for improved missile guidance packages as well as thicker armour plating - particularly on the arms which had been a noted weakspot on the OSR-2C.

Battle History:
While Ostrocs had been in use by the Dragoons for over a decade, their most famous role so far was in the Battle of Luthien. As Nova Cats pushed closer to the Imperial City, militia Dragons were rushing to reinforce the final line of defense. This spearhead was reinforced by two companies of faster Dragoon 'mechs, mainly Ostrocs. The fast heavies were able to survive Clan firepower long enough to get close and buy time for the Coordinator's Dragon Claws to be deployed.

Deployment:
While the Ostroc OST-3W has been exclusively in use by the Dragoons for over a decade, sale to other mercenary units has been opened up since 3052 as the Dragoons seek to defuse hostility over their long silence about the looming threat. Many small commands offered contracts along the Occupation Zone have found the Ostroc an affordable addition to their forces, and one that isn't too hard for their techs to maintain and operate.

Total Cost: 11,943,160 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,649

Chassis: Ost-II Standard
Power Plant: Vlar 300 Fusion XL Engine
Walking Speed: 54.0 km/h
Maximum Speed: 86.4 km/h
Jump Jets: Unknown
    Jump Capacity: 150 meters
Armor: Riese 475 Standard Armor w/ CASE
Armament:
    2  ER Large Lasers

Targeting and Tracking System: Ferdinand-a
================================================================================
Developed in house at Irian Battlemechs, the Ostroc-3M is an upgrade of extant OSR-2C OSR-2M models within the federal units
of the FWLM. The key upgrade is the new XL engine which allows for more armor, new weapons and the addition of double heat
sink. A pair of ER large lasers replace the original standard units while the SRM-4 has been upsized to an SRM-6 with a CASE-
protected ammo bin. A pair of standard medium lasers have been added to the arms while a medium pulser has been added to
the center torso for close quarters combat. A total of sixteen double heat sinks help with heat mitigation, but proper heat control
must be maintained at closer ranges. A total of eleven tons of ferro-fibrous armor is carried for near maximum protection.

Sorry, I've been gone so long. 25 days in hospital after a quintuple (most you can have and still be alive) bypass, a trio of micro-strokes and a heart attack. Basically my cardiac system had a cascade failure.

Take care of yourself.

Sorry to hear, Abele.

Out of curiosity, two quick questions for Takiro:

(1) Should the Ostsol be part of the same thread?  For all intents and purposes, it's effectively the exact same frame with a slightly different package (and I think a different set of 'Mech traits).  I don't know that there will be a huge difference otherwise between Ostsol and Ostroc designs.  Even the 'official' designs don't seem hugely different from each other.

(2) Are Command Cockpits part of the allowed tech?  They are Star League era technology and are (by canon) starting to be produced in limited numbers in the Inner Sphere by the 3050s.  Asking for the Ostsol, as I have a few ideas there.

Overview
Having suffered huge losses after fighting the Clans both in terms of units and of worlds (with only 12.6% of their units remaining and 8.3% of their worlds), the Free Rasalhague Republic is facing a serious threat to its own existence.
Even if ComStar bought some relief by winning a truce thanks to their win on Tukayyid and is pouring units and money in what remain of the Free Rasalhague Republic, its leaders know that it is never good to rely on someone else’s generosity and have taken several initiatives to solve this problem. One of them is to make use of the “peace” to test new tactics and new equipments to go along what could be seen as a new military doctrine.
The loss suffered means that each remaining world will have to be defended and kept in KungsArmé hands and this can only happen by using the weaknesses of the Clans against them, one of them being the lack of proper reconnaissance at the strategical and tactical levels and another one being a refusal to concentrate firepower when allowed.
The first part was obviously for either Light ‘Mechs or speedy vehicles that could evade detection and outrun most troubles but once on the battlefield where space was so tight, they were too vulnerable for the superior firepower enjoyed by the Clans. This is where a proposal was made to use a heavier model.
The “freedom” enjoyed by the decrease in the number of ‘Mechs in the army, the lack of production capacities (meaning that there was no industrial lobby to use a certain model rather than another) and the support of most States in the Inner Sphere allowed the KungsArmé to launch an experiment with retrofits of older designs before deciding if they were interesting enough to build new production lines or to secure privileged access to them.
Based on the prescriptions, the Ostroc was selected. Its rarity allowed it not to be missed in front-line units if things went wrong and its profile and mix of speed, armour and firepower made it a good fighter in different roles from urban fighter to heavy scout or deep raider.

Capabilities
Odin Manufacturing got the contract for this test run as it was already producing Ostscout on Orestes and as a compensation since its production lines were not going through a heavy upgrade like Grumium Creations or Janesek Industries.

The first step was upgrading all the available chassis to the OSR-2D standards and this was done thanks to a shipment of ER Large Lasers from ComStar sponsored Blankenburg Technologies.
The following step was to decrease the number of Double Heat Sinks, dropping all those not in the Fusion Engine, preventing it from alpha-striking but keeping it in capacity to fire its twin ER Large Lasers without any problem.
The next choice made was to use Ferro-Fibrous to improve the overall protection.

Willing to test and try several ideas, the KungsArmé requested Odin Manufacturing to come up with some new ideas for tactical scouting and fire coordination variants based on this chassis, both areas where the Inner Sphere could enjoy some superiority.

5 designs were presented by the manufacturer, each christened according to one of the names of the God Odin or to something linked to it to show its role on the battlefield.
The first, Geirvaldr or Spear Master, dropped the classical SRM-4 for 9 tons of Ferro-Fibrous Armour, 6 Medium Lasers and a Remote Sensor Dispenser to detect where Clans are headed. To shield it when it drops the sensors, a Guardian ECM was added.
The second variant is Geirtýr, or Spear God, and exchanges 4 Medium Lasers for a Narc Missile Beacon and one ton of ammo, allowing to tag team with other missile equipped units.
To be efficient, sensors must be monitored and this is where the Rúnatýr, God of Runes, comes in. 6 Medium Lasers and a Beagle Active Probe allows it to be dangerous on its own while being able to “read the future” and detect hidden or moving opponents. To shield it a bit more, the armour was upgrade to 9.5 tons.

The last two variants are named Huginn and Muninn for the two ravens of the god Odin and were constructed only thanks to a shipment of C3 Computers given through ComStar for further test.
As said in the Poetic Edda from old,
I fear for Huginn,
that he come not
back,
yet more anxious
am I for Muninn.

Muninn carries the heart and soul of a C3 unit, a C3 Master Computer. To do that, the only available weapons are the 2 ER Large Lasers and the 2 Medium Lasers. However, the armour was increased to 10 tons of Ferro-Fibrous.
Huginn packs the firepower of other Ostroc variants with 6 Medium Lasers added to its twin ER Large Lasers. This way, it can bring a lot of firepower while serving as a spotter for others thanks to its C3 Slave Computer.

Battle History
So far, only tests have been conducted to verify the feasibility of the new tactics under development but they have proven quite successful giving the KungsArmé some extra flexibility by allowing it to detect the approaching threats and to mass its strength to take it down.

Deployment
The KungsArmé seems pleased with the new Ostroc and a decision regarding which one(s) to retain is likely to happen quickly. However without ComStar funding, it is unlikely that a production line will be created.

Notable ‘MechWarriors
Fjalar or Deceiver is the nickname of a Lance of the new Ostroc variants assigned to the 2nd Kavalleri where it leads a scout unit. Following Överste Pegrem’s claim to her ties with a long line of ninjas, the identity of their pilots and the exact variant in this Lance is kept a secret to further confuse its potential opponents about who or what they are facing.
