Title: Optimizing the Panther
Post by: Takiro on January 26, 2020, 09:59:42 PM
Contest number twelve features another Draconis favorite which often pairs with the Jenner. The Panther is the far slower, think heavy Mech but with some mobility, of the two with far more hitting power and range. Maybe the bigger sluggers are more my style as I have used this one before because I have used the Panther before and I generally like it. While I have my own version of this classic I'd love to see what you guys can come up with. Here we have several threads of inspiration to inspire you from include a return of the Mech of the Week Article from CBT as well as the BattleTechwiki page and our first bite at the apple right here on OBT thanks to Giovanni!!!

Design Criteria
Design: Panther Light BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 35 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. I've also become a fan of massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries (Free Worlds League in particular has gone in this direction) which could provide closer equivalents to Clan LRMs. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

The Panther can most commonly be found in the service of House Kurita who is by far the greatest user of this Light BattleMech design. The Free Rasalhague Republic likely has the second most per capita thanks to their Draconis origins and since they took over both Panther factories following their secession. The Federated Commonwealth probably has the next most thanks to salvage taken over the years although I am not sure how many they would utilize. I really am not sure how many if any are employed by ComStar, the Free Worlds League, the Capellan Confederation, Mercenaries or the Periphery Powers. I suppose it would be available but on a far lower scale than the three primary users of the Panther.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday February 7th, 2019 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

Did this one a while back inspired by GiovanniBlasini’s Post Your Puma! thread, Black Panther, and Combat Manual House Kurita. Love to hear what you guys think about it and see if you can beat it!!

PNT-10ALAG GRAND PANTHER

Mass: 35 tons
Chassis: Alshain 560-Carrier EndoSteel
Power Plant: Hermes 210 XL
Cruising Speed: 64 kph
Maximum Speed: 97 kph
Jump Jets: None
   Jump Capacity: None
Armor: Maximillian 42
Armament:
2 Lord’s Light 2 Extended Range Particle Projector Cannons
Manufacturer: Alshain Weapons
Primary Factory: Tok Do
Communications System: Sipher CommCon SCU-4
Targeting and Tracking System: Cat’s Eyes 5 with C3 Slave

Overview:
The Amphigean Light Assault Group was one of the few DCMS contingents with an affinity for light BattleMechs. Throughout the Succession Wars they had utilized these fast units to deadly effect by darting around enemy formations and in packs descending on isolated targets. While extremely dangerous these ‘shock’ tactics proved most effective against some of the Dragon’s more cumbersome adversaries. In order to facilitate the Groups operations a modified Panther, the PNT-9ALAG, was designed for maximum speed which dropped the jump jets for a larger engine. Able to run at eighty-six kilometers per hour this variant was their preferred model in spite of the loss of jump mobility.
Unfortunately, this unique design and the Amphigean’s hit and run tactics were not enough to stop the Clans whose fearsome Puma regularly outmatched them at every turn. Ultimately the Invaders destroyed both the 2nd and 5th Light Assault Groups on Avon and Krenice respectively. One member of the unit was confident he could get his Panther to match the performance of the high-tech intruders. Challa Udaku was an elite Mechwarrior of African descent with the 1st Amphigean who set out to conduct this upgrade on his personal ‘Mech. Naming it the Grand Panther in the same vein as the Grand Dragon both Draconis upgrades share the same primary weapon.

Capabilities:
The key to the entire upgrade process was obtaining a 210 Extra Light Engine to power the new design. Thankfully Irian BattleMechs Unlimited in the Free Worlds League manufactured the Hermes 210 XL and was willing to export it the Combine. Originally made for the Capellan Confederation’s Raven this power plant increased the maximum speed of the Panther to ninety-seven kilometers per hour matching the Puma. To compensate for the larger engine a three-ton gyroscope had to be included in order to maintain proper design equilibrium. Of course, the rest of the Panther’s secondary weaponry also had to be dropped in order to make way for a second Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon. These two big guns are identical to the Puma’s primary arsenal and despite inferior to their hard-hitting Clan counterparts can equal their effective range. To compete with the ultra-advanced Targeting Computer and apply a new Kurita innovation Udaku convinced his superiors to allow him to mount a C3 Slave. While some traditionalists expressed doubts in this new equipment the C3 network feed into Amphigean Light Assault Group’s pack mentality.
Unfortunately, there were some design limitations which could not be overcome. Efforts to improve the Mech’s armor with Ferro-Fibrous were thwarted by a lack of internal space. Proving too bulky to fit on the existing chassis along with the rest of its weapons and equipment this concept had to be dropped ultimately. While one radical design proposal dropped the existing arms for weapon barrels which would have made such an armor upgrade possible it proved too costly. With a price tag nearly double the PNT-10K retaining the venerable Maximillian 42 armor which already provided excellent protection, eight-seven percent of maximum, became a no brainer. Also despite adding eleven Double Heat Sinks, which again matches its Clan adversary, firing both ER PPCs will cause overheating. So, like the Puma this InnerSphere design must also alternate between firing both of its primary weapons and firing one to mitigate a high heat curve.

Deployment:
The forced relocation of the Panther plant on Krenice to Tok Do and the high cost of this advanced model has so far limited its deployment. Only the 1st Amphigean Light Assault Group currently fields the Grand Panther and it is fast becoming a favorite. No doubt the design will spread to the 7th Amphigean Light Assault Group soon as that new regiment continues to form up in the Dieron Military District. The BattleMech has quickly proven its worth in repeated strikes against Clan held worlds targeting supply depots. Helping to capture or destroy impressive amounts of advanced equipment from the Invaders has stamped its place in the Light Assault Group. The exceptional performance of the Black Panther Lance, composed entirely of Grand Panthers, during these raids in particular earned public recognition from the Gunji-no-Kanrei. His praise bought with it requests from Genyosha and Ryuken for refit kits as well as additional production. Also, the Order of Five Pillars new military unit, the Sohei, has also expressed interest in obtaining the Grand Panther for its frequent operations against the Clans.

    1 Donal PPC
    1 Delta Dart LRM-5
Manufacturer: Vandenburg Mechanized Industries
    Primary Factory: New Vandenburg
Communications System: Sipher CommCon CSU-4
Targeting and Tracking System: Cat's Eyes 5

Overview:
Since the late 3030s, MIIO has tracked an increasing number of Panthers in use in the rimward periphery. Several theories for this have been followed up on, including the possibility that some SLDF stockpile had been uncovered, but the source was eventually traced to New Vandenberg.

This only raised the question as to how VMI had obtained schematics to build a design usually produced only in the Rasalhague region of the Draconis Combine. While proof would take time to obtain, the obvious answer was correct: the Draconis Combine had elected to share data on the Panther with the Taurian Concordat, reasoning that the paranoid Thomas Calderon would be only too eager to reinforce his forces on the Federated Suns border, forcing House Davion to move forces away from other locations, such as the Draconis March.

Capabilities:
The exact model of Panther built by VMI has shifted over time as different parts and technologies were available, but since 3040 it settled onto the PNT-9T, which sports Durallex Light ferro-fibrous armour developed for use with the Taurians' Maultier APC and a Delta Dart LRM launcher rather than SRMs. This is believed to be an attempt to mirror the Toro, the Taurian's first indigenous 'Mech, which combined a PPC with Delta Dart launchers

The Taurians find that this variant operates well as a sniper. They have fitted it with a Donal PPC, sharing production with their Warhammer lines. It seems that the DCMS was unwilling to share actual weapon designs, even after providing schematics for the chassis and electronics. The latter paid off for the Taurians, since as would later be found with the Charger it was quite suited for use with LRMs even though Tanadi hadn't really intended them for that weapon type.

Deployment:
The Taurians did repay their benefactors by providing a shipment of Panthers to the Combine shortly after the end of the War of 3039, but these aren't believed to be PNT-9T models. While almost all found on the Davion border, Protector Calderon did allow limited use in 'evaluation missions', which the Taurian military used as an excuse to hunt down pirates, something that they'd had little opportunity with. Two Panthers are unaccounted for after this evaluation and it's unclear if they were destroyed entirely, taken apart as part of the post-evaluation review or might have been salvaged by third parties.

When news of the Clans arrived on Rasalhague, the Board of Directors at Gorton, Kingley and Thorpe acted quickly and put together a plan that would get as much production equipment off planet at all three Republic production facilities and to a location coreward of Rasalhague yet still within in the FRR. The planet chosen was Orestes. Their facility on Jarett was a left out of this plan as it was in the Combine and too far away to bring any hard assets to the Republic. A small number of key personnel from New Oslo and Satalice were able to make it as far as Al-Hillah before their JumpShip were dragooned in Kungsarme service. Roughly 25 percent of the production was able to get off Rasalhague before the Clans claimed that world. The most important assets that managed to make it to Al-Hillah were the design specs for the Panther, Phoenix Hawk and Archer Battlemechs being built at the Satalice facility. This and nearly two dozen Panther-9R chassis and engines and the necessary tool and dye works also made it to Al-Hillah before continuing on to Orestes.

Orestes, at the lacked the necessary orbital facilities to manufacture endo-steel frames, so all of the designs would have revert to using the heavier standard chassis. As a makeshift repair and refit was being built on an old airstrip. GKT engineers set about designing new configurations for the Panther. The first featured a binary laser and a Streak SRM-2 launcher. The Streak was readily available from sources in the Lyran Commonwealth. While the binary laser was developed in house from plans acquired in 3041 from a  team of treasure hunters working in the Free Worlds League.

The second new variant uses a standar 175 fusion engine acquired from sources in the Capellan. Once used for the Raven battlemech, they found new life in the Panther. after being refit with double heat sinks by the Capellan factory, two dozen of the powerplants were sent to the GKT facility on Orestes. Unable to acquire any ER PPCs due to there being a shortage due all of the new Mechs that needed, the GKT team settled on using the ER large laser matched with couple of pulse lasers and a Streak SRM-2 launcher.

Both Mechs take advantage of using ferro-fibrous with 9FR model having a half-ton more than the 9BL. The 9BL retains the use of single heat sinks as the refitting of double heat sinks was next to impossible at the makeshift Orestes facility.

Will need to rewrite the fluff. Which I sort of remember but will need to rethink my thoughts

Panther PNT-10ALA

While the Amphigean Light Assault Groups have long modified their 9R Panthers for an additional speed boost with the larger 175 Engine at the expense of the mobility of the traditional jump jets found on the signature model. Increased confrontations with Clan forces have shown that the speed boosts provided with this switch doesn’t provide to the needs of today’s MechWarriors.

Reviewing the needs and wants of their troops ALAG have returned to the roots of the Panther design. Returning to the original Large Laser primary weaponry. With the need for additional tonnage to be found the traditional SRM-4 system has been dropped. Rationale given was that often the ‘Mech was far from supply lines and the addition of an additional Large Laser in its stead would be an improvement in the deisgn. Able to have the direct fire damage at medium ranges, their speed maintained at higher than the traditional and now reintegrating the Jump Jets, the ALAG Mechwarriors are excited to return to the battlefield in the reconfigured design. The only advanced technology added by the unit Double Heat Sinks for the increased heat from the all energy loadout and the new Jump Jets. An additional half ton of armor has also been added.

Panther PNT-NSB1

A variant produced by Norse-Storm Technologies the NSB1 variant is being upgraded from captured Panthers from both the Federated Commonwealth as well as surviving Free Rasalhague Republic units.

Incorporating the larger but lighter 245XL engine currently under production by the company for the return of the SPR-5F Spector to the battlefield. This increased speed gives an entirely new feel to the walking tank that is the Panther. Some saw opting for the lighter ER Large Laser instead of the traditional ER PPC as an interesting choice. Some would have preferred the longer ranges and increased damage but the designers felt the increased tonnage would have left the design with little to no secondary weaponry available. Replacing the traditional SRM-4 missile system with twin Streak SRM 2 systems. The replacement is seen as an improvement by Mechwarriors utilizing the design with the ammo and heat savings features of the failure to fire with no lock inherent in the system.

So looking up research on Panther production sites....I can't find a single one still in Kurita hands.

Wakazashi Enterprises
New Samarkand not open until 3132

Alshain Weapons
Alshain lost to GB in 3051
New Oslo lost to Wolf in 3050
and Tok Do not built until 3083
Title: Re: Optimizing the Panther
Post by: Takiro on January 27, 2020, 04:28:51 PM
The first Panther factory was located on New Oslo and it began cranking out Mechs in 2759 mainly for the SLDF (implied). After the fall of the Star League this facility was taken over by the Draconis Combine who adopted it into its ranks just in time for the Succession Wars.

In order to keep up with demand a second factory was created on Jarret some time during the Succession Wars.

Both facilities lay within the Free Rasalhague Republic which apparently sparked the creation of a third facility on Krenice. During the Clan Invasion all three sites were assaulted and two (or at least significant parts of two) were relocated. FRR authorities managed to barely outrun the Wolves on New Oslo before rebuilding on Satalice. They were attempting another move when that plant was captured. Jarret was destroyed during the invasion and the Combine managed to relocated at least part of the Krenice facility to Tok Do (Objective Raids).

It is also said that 'While Alshain Weapons crash-built a new line on Tok Do in 3053, they could not maintain their pre-invasion production levels and focused on spare parts and refit kits instead.'

So at this time there are two known factories producing the Panther - Satalice and Tok Do. Both probably hodge podge messes thanks to the Clans.

Alshain Weapons lost its factory on New Oslo to Clan Wolf in 3050 and was forced to destroy the factory on Jarett that same year to prevent its use by Clan Ghost Bear

You state Tok Do but also it says can only do spare parts and refit kits not production of new mechs

As for Satalice

Since taking control of the lion’s share of the Free Rasalhague Republic, Clan Ghost Bear has done their utmost to integrate as much as possible with the occupied populace. Although such factories as Gorton, Kingsley and Thorpe on Satalice might seem of dubious value to the Clan’s touman, Clan Ghost Bear continues to train the workers here and hope to be able to have them trained to manufacture up to Clan standards soon. Until then, they continue to accept modest numbers of the factory’s original products for use as training ‘Mechs and to be issued to the lowest of garrison and solahma troops.

The move of factories is detailed in the original Technical Readout 3050 as well as Objective Raids.

New canon doesn't just pave over old canon in my BattleTech settings bud. I think every word has a place regardless its age.

Couldn't read the picture you sent Tak phone is too small screened.

But the new canon doesn't change the old canon. Satalice is in clan hands just wolf now instead of GB so either way its not able to make mechs for DC

Your post states Tak Do is only doing refits and spare parts.

Title: Re: Optimizing the Panther

Just enlarge it bud, I'll email it to you.

The original TRO 3050 (which was in universe published 3051 during the lull in the invasion caused by the Clans return home to elect a new ilKhan following the death of Leo Showers at Radstadt) lists Alshain Weapons on Krenice as a manufacturer of the Panther. It is uses the word 'telescoped' specifically to emphasis the crash nature of construction there. At least part of this facility was relocated to Tok Do but most of Krenice (previously an industrial planet) was laid waste by retreating Kurita forces. By 3053 the Tok Do facility is operational but in a limited fashion - production is slow and there is a heavy focus on refit kits and repair work (aka spare parts).

Don't forget as part of this contest you can establish a new factory with a suitable justification in some real good fluff which someone here has already done.

Deleted my new production variant no inspiration and it looks like the Tak Do variant is correct found more fluff about it in objective raids. Thought about designing a IIC model for wolves on satalice but it's against contest rules.

We already had a Clan variant using InnerSphere technology win a spot in these contest. It can't feature Clan tech sure but the Clans could still be making them for lesser forces.

Captured in 3051 the Gorton, Kingsley, and Thorpe Enterprises facilities on Satalice has begun production again under new management with Clan Wolf. Not caring much for the original design Clan Wolf has instead changed the design for their needs, target practice and Mechs for means for their Solahma units to hunt down bandits.

Removing the original Hermes 140 engines for the more robust VOX 280s which used to be reserved for the Archers produced on site has doubled the effect speed of the design. Higher speeds mean harder targets to hit is the thought process with the switch. Not caring much for the offensive potential of the design has stripped the Panther of its normal weaponry. Clan Wolf needing to trade with the Ghost Bears for components have begun trading the Lords Light ER PPCs and Telos Four-Shot launchers to the Bears for the targeting and communications equipment necessary for the design as well as the Martell Lasers now included on the design. Dropping the Lexington Lifter Jump Jets while increasing the armor capacity of the design are the last of the changes made by the Clan.

PNT-11K PANTHER

Mass: 35 tons
Chassis: Alshain 560-Carrier Endo Steel
Power Plant: Nissan 175
Cruising Speed: 54 kph
Maximum Speed: 86 kph
Jump Jets: Lexington Limited Lifters
   Jump Capacity: 120 meters
Armor: Maximillian 42
Armament: 1 Lord’s Light 2 Extended-Range Particle Projector Cannon
2 Guided Technologies Second Generation Streak SRM-2s
Manufacturer: Alshain Weapons
Primary Factory: Tok Do
Communications System: Sipher CommCon SCU-4
Targeting and Tracking System: Cat’s Eyes 5

OVERVIEW
The Clan Invasion wrought a lot of havoc on the InnerSphere especially with its military industrial base. The rapid advance of the Warriors of Kerensky cut off vital component and manufacturing hubs which weakened the Great Houses' ability to rebuild their shattered defenses. ComStar stepped up following Tukayyid restarting long sheltered Terran industries to restore its own military as well as their newfound allies. One notable example of this industrial alliance was the development of the PNT-11K Panther for the DCMS, Rasalhague Kungsarme, and the ComGuard.

CAPABILITIES
This new upgrade used the Alshain 560-Carrier EndoSteel chassis which was developed for the PNT-10K. The Hermes 140 Fusion Engine was replaced with the two ton larger 175 Nissan Power Plant courtsey of Skobel MechWorks. Not only did it improve the Panther's maximum speed to eighty six kilometers per hour but it made room for bulky Double Heat Sinks. Ten of these 'freezers' replace the thirteen Single Heat Sinks normally found on this Light BattleMech. The larger engine is able to incorporate seven of these bulky coolers leaving just three which have to be placed in the interior of the Mech. Four Lexington Limited Lifters remain to provide an additional one hundred and twenty meters of jump mobility. These jump jets enable the Lord's Light 2 Extended-Range Particle Beam Weapon to take the high ground and strike from a distance. Two Guided Technologies Second Generation Streak SRM-2s manufactured on Proserpina replaced the Telos-4 Short-Range Missile Delivery System. These highly efficient missile racks provide close in support for enemies able to get in tight quarters. Finally six and half tons of Maximillian 42 standard armor plating remain to provide solid protection for this Light Support 'Mech.

DEPLOYMENT
Aid to the reconstructed Tok Do facility which was hobbled but its emergency transference from Krenice thanks to this project boosted production. Draconis and ComStar technicians are still working to further enhance output to better defend the InnerSphere from future Clan assaults. Limited new production runs have entered service with all three powers while older Panthers have continued to arrive there for refurbishment from locations that even include the Federated Commonwealth.

I was really busy these last two weeks so I only got a change to do something yet.
Here is a Panther designed with a pack mentality.

Below you will find the the interview of Chief Petty Officer Tanaka from the 1st Amphigean Light Assault Group I did before he had to leave for an unknown destination.

Hello Chief Petty Officer Tanaka.

Hi Mr. Gunsmith.

Could you tell us a little more about yourself?

I am Chief Petty Officer Tanaka from the Draconis Mustered Soldiery and I have been assigned for more than 20 years to the 1st Amphigean Light Assault Group, the Legacy of Blood.

So you were on Galtor III?

Yes but this was a rather easy campaign. We just cut through the defending forces and it was over.

Note from the Editor: A loyal Son of the Dragon as it was not so easy, especially after the initial phase.

But we are here for you to tell us about your pet project, the Ichor. First question, isn’t this a strange name?

Not at all. Ichor was the name in Greek mythology of the ethereal fluid that was the blood of the gods and other immortals. Since I wanted to contribute to the avenging of our destroyed sister regiments and since by tradition, all the unit's Battalion and Company names are related to Greek mythos, I found that this name fitted the concept.

Okay. What is this concept?

The Ichor is basically a Panther PNT-10K updated to the Amphigean Light Assault Group standards, much like the PNT-9ALAG that we have been famous for.

So it is basically a custom variant of the famous Panther?

Yes and not. First, we wanted to increase the speed like we had done before. Luckily for us, there was a whole set of XL Engines waiting for us in the new factory of Luthien Armour Works, which would allow us to give the rest of the ‘Mech a much needed boost.

Note from the Editor: it seems that these engines were to be used in the new Raptor Omni. Were they given to the 1st Amphigean or did it “acquire” them remains unknown.

However against the Clans, this boost was not enough and we put a MASC to allow for short busts of speed and making the Ichor, the fastest Panther in the whole Inner Sphere.

I have heard that you also improved its mobility?

Yes, even if we prefer more ground speed, Jump Jets could provide a tactical edge in certain situations against the Clans. We even increased the jumping capacity of the PNT-10K by a full 25%.

And for the weapons? What did you bring in to play against the Big Guys?

I wouldn’t be so ironic if I were you as this Panther has more than its share of claws and teeth. The ER PPC remains where it was as it brings more range and firepower than any weapon. However gone is the SRM-4, we decided instead to use a SRM-6 One Shot from Budda Imperial Vehicles as a last line of defence and to ensure it would stay on the field, we added 2 Argra 3L Medium Lasers left over from the Jenner original production runs. And around this, mostly to make the best of the long range of its Lord’s Light 2, we added a C3 Slave to connect it to a C3 Network and use other ‘Mechs to support it.

Note from the Editor: This man is either well connected to Luthien Armor Works or this company might be missing some cargo.

Aren’t you running a bit hot?

Not at all. We have 10 Double Heat Sinks and obviously you must decide what weapons you will fire but in tests so far, we managed to run and fire all energy weapons without barely noticing the heat or to shoot the ER PPC while jumping.

In other words, more than enough.

This is what our ‘MechWarriors think. And don’t forget we are the Amphigean Light Assault Group, we are the sharks, we are a pack!

True but don’t forget that your new enemies aren’t playing by the same rules. Speaking of rules, you mentioned trials. Did you get the opportunity to field it against real opponents? Or the Clans?

You know that since the Truce, we aren’t allowed to move above the line but I can’t wait to make them pay for our sister regiments.

Note from the Editor: According to our intel, the 1st Amphigean is planning to raid several worlds and our bet is that the new Panther is likely to see action or has already seen some.

Well thank you  Chief Petty Officer Tanaka.

It was a pleasure Mr. Gunsmith

I hear ya Ice, was expecting to be done with the Ostscout review by now myself. Glad to see you got something in.

Very good Abele.

Still some time left folks. A little under eighteen hours to be exact. So get any last second Panther entries in!

Okay folks this contest has concluded and I'd love to thank everyone for their participation. Might take a hiatus on the optimization quest for a bit to catch up on other work but don't worry I have another something special coming soon! ;)

Thank you but I don't want to get overwhelmed Bradshaw. It won't be a major delay in our contest. I am thinking March we will start up again with Mediums.

With only nine entries by four designers this was one of our smallest contest pools which was a little disappointing. I have to say though I have found it hard recently to get any spare time to dedicate to BattleTech unfortunately so it is tough sometimes to find the zone. What did show up was quite good and for a second straight contest there was no disqualifications which was awesome. Made it really hard to pick winners but here is my attempt at it.

PASSABLE

9. PNT-9BL Panther (Abele)
While I really like the idea of replacing the PPC with a Blazer however with only a dozen single Heat Sinks it is pretty tough to keep cool. I could see the Free Rasalhague Republic developing a variant like this in desperation for use against the Clan invaders but the heat bloom keeps me from embracing it completely. Like the original 140 Fusion Engine (4/6/4) and six tons of Ferro-Fibrous (107 factor) for improved protection. Even the Streak SRM-2 (50) upgrade fits but there is just too much heat in my opinion to approve this concept for production unfortunately. If you went with Double Heat Sinks here Abele you had a winner.

8. PNT-10K (Ice Hellion)
Named the Ichor this fast mover features the 175 XL Engine (5/8/5) from the Raptor and a MASC (10) for even faster movement. An EndoSteel structure and Double Heat Sinks are bulky but effective in this design which because of all this light weight lostech features a bunch of weaponry. The ER PPC is joined by twin Medium Lasers a Single Shot SRM-6 (3.5 tons) and a C3 Slave. Not a fan of the single shot launcher but like the retained six and half tons of standard armor (104 factor). This would make a nice custom or unique design but I'm not sure about a wide spread variant.

CONTENDERS

7. PNT-9FR Panther (Abele)
This is an interesting modernized variant of the original Panther developed by the Free Rasalhague Republic. Faster with the 175 Fusion Engine (5/8/5) but less punch thanks to an ER Large instead of a PPC. I like the Streak SRM-2 upgrade which replaces the SRM-4 but I'm not as excited about the Medium Pulse and Small Pulse additions. Double Heat Sinks are a big plus here though as is the six and a half tons of Ferro-Fibrous (116 factor) for near max protection. I am a bit concerned that no CASE was included to protect against ammunition explosions from the Streak SRM ammo. Obtaining the power plant from sources in the Capellan Confederation is a bit dubious but acceptable. Sorry to say one other very advanced design beat you out this time bud.

6. PNT-10ALA (Bradshaw)
This new Amiphigean modification has their signature 175 Fusion Engine and also brings back the Jump Jets (5/8/5) for enhanced mobility as well as better speed. Double Heat Sinks with two Large Lasers completing its armament is quite effective. Seven tons of standard armor (112 factor) plating is also an improvement which approaches maximum protection. While you could have gotten more complex and sophisticated in your approach this keeps it simple stupid. Unfortunately, you ran into some really good competition (my Grand Panther namely) and if I had my way this would have been the Draconis March variant.

5. PNT-10ALAG (Takiro)
Not gonna lie folks, the Grand Panther is one of my favorite concepts despite its high heat factor and cost. With a 6/9 movement rating thanks to the Free Worlds made Hermes 210 XL and two ER PPCs this design which features a C3 Slave can match the Clan Puma in many ways. Despite eleven Double Heat Sinks which results in a two-one-one firing pattern from its big gun weaponry I think it still works well. Admittedly I could have gone with a more heat friendly two PPC version, which is a variant planned, but that would have reduced the range. With an XL Engine, EndoSteel, and three Double Heat Sinks bulking out the design I was unable to add Ferro-Fibrous which was disappointing. However, the base six and half tons of armor isn't bad and pretty capable of taking a beating so its ok. Not quite the right time for this design yet with the Third Marik Civil War disrupting supplies and I think I just may go with standard PPCs instead of ERs to better manage heat.

WINNERS

4. PNT-WLF (Bradshaw)
This solahma design from the Wolf Clan is pretty neat and makes me think of Phelan’s Wolfhound a little bit. In spite of being named for a Big Cat this canine revision is fast using a VOX 280 Engine (8/12) thanks to the Ghost Bear held Satalice factory which makes the Archer. Without jump jets this double-quick Panther can close with superior armor plating of seven tons (112 factor) and meat out punishment. Cheap and easily desployed I can see Wolf and Bear InnerSphere bondsman being outfitted with these BattleMechs as auxiliary forces for the invaders. Good concept and good enough for fourth prize!

3. PNT-11K (Takiro)
As our contest unfolded, I contemplated more and more an upgraded Panther with a 175 Fusion Engine (5/8/4) that did its best to improve on everything. I only came up short on Jump Jets and Armor which remained completely unchanged what I did change is notable. Ten Double Heat Sinks replaces Thirteen Single Heat Sinks enabling you to effectively utilize the ER PPC and makes room for the engine expansion along with the addition of a C3 Slave. This can really make the Panther into a superior long-range sniper in an equipped lance. I think replacing the SRM-4 with Artemis IV FCS with twin Streak SRM-2 launchers is a big upgrade. They are consistent hitters at close range with their lock and fire system guaranteeing a lower heat profile with efficient ammo usage. This was the best Draconis variant in my opinion and good enough for third place!

2. PNT-10NSB1 (Bradshaw)
Incorporating the new 245 XL Engine in production from the Spector this refit is much faster and more mobile (7/11/7) with an ER Large Laser and two Streak SRM-2s as its armament. I like the unspoken idea of getting back to this ‘Mechs origins as an SLDF design but now faster and in the service of the AFFC as an anti-Clan fast striker. Plus, I like the idea of Norse-Storm outfitting the FedCom Jenner and Panther with the same engine from its Spector. Double Heat Sinks do a real nice job here and the six point five tons of standard armor (106 factor) are solid for protection. Perhaps ferro-fibrous could have been even better but I like this design which in my opinion was good enough for second place!!

1. PNT-9T Panther (drakensis)
I really like this Taurian design which is incredibly similar to the original featuring a PPC and LRM-5 instead of SRMs. This doubles down on the light fire support role even though it does mean that both long reaching weapon systems have minimum range issues. The only lostech items that the BattleMech features are defensive in nature with six tons of Ferro-Fibrous replacing the standard plating and a CASE protecting against ammunition explosions. Otherwise the rest of this design is identical to the PNT-9R right down to the thirteen Single Heat Sinks which do a good job at cooling the Mechs waste heat. I find the story very believable too as the Taurians dealing with the Draconians is a natural fit especially with their common Davion enemy. I also like the history of the Toro which is similar and a native attempt to get back to its capabilities. Excellent work and top marks to drakensis!!!

Congratulations to the winners and Takiro, it is sometimes difficult to find more than a couple of ways to upgrade a design in a logical way while retaining its role (hence perhaps the "lack" of designs).

8. PNT-10K (Ice Hellion)
This would make a nice custom or unique design but I'm not sure about a wide spread variant.

And you got the idea. I only saw it deployed in the Amphigean Light Assault Groups (and perhaps a few in other units by some strange twisted mistakes in cargo).

I hear ya guys. I really liked the Blazer replacement for the ER PPC forwarded by Abele. Might take a revision of that one for the future.

If/When this starts up again you are going to see a blazer on every chassis that you put forward for optimization.

LOL!

A Blazer in place of a PPC/ER PPC comes with certain advantages like head-capping. It is interesting in the Salient Horizon setting to see the Blazer take off especially in the Free Worlds League with the unfolding Civil War and that old lack of PPC excuse. ;)

Looking back on this contest, I'd like to redub the Panther PNT-WLF to the Canine-K9, what do you think? I know dogs arent Wolfs and thats the reason for the name. Its basically their bitch and it shows not as good as their brethren the Wolves. Its a little subliminal mind fuck to pilots.
