Number twenty-one has gone from LAM to IIC to unseen and back to reseen again but it has always been one of my favorite Mediums. This should be no surprise because with the old Phoenix Hawk looking like the Transformers Jetfire or a Robotech Valkyrie where my love of giant walking robots began. I also feel like its one of the most iconic BattleMechs of the universe and I can't wait to see what you guys can do with this classic in the Salient Horizon setting.

Design Criteria
Design: Phoenix Hawk Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 45 tons
Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!
Star League LosTech

Design Traits of this Setting
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy.
Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.
Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday July 3rd, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

When the PXH-3D was put into service there were some complaints from Mechwarriors in the AFFC. The biggest complaint was that the -3D was over armed and lacked adequate cooling to handle all of the Mech's weapons. They also feel the design moved away from it's primary role as a scout. In response to these complaints, the AFFC called for a new version of the Phoenix Hawk that would emphasize the scouting role. Fortunately Apple Computers Intersteller had managed to put the famed Tek Tru-Trak system back into production, while General Motors had reintroduced the advanced Tek Battlecom. It was soon decided to develop a new version of the Phoenix Hawk based on the PXH-2 variant.
While the PXH-4D shares the same endo steel chassis as the PXH-3D, it relies on the older GM 270 fusion engine. One of the reasons for this change was to try and keep the cost of the mech down, as the electronic systems were very expensive. The weapons are based on the original PXH-1. The old Harmon Heavy Laser is updated to a Blazefire Sweetshot Extended Range model. The machine guns have been removed, but in their place the PXH-4D carries a Sutel Precsion Line Small Pulse Laser which is effective against infantry while not requiring any ammunition. To deal with the heat build up of these weapons, the cooling system is upgraded to use double strength heat sinks.
The star of the new Phoenix Hawk is it's advanced electronics array. The Tek Battlecom is combined with a Guardian ECM, while the Tek Tru-Trak is mated to a Beagle Active Probe. This turns the Phoenix Hawk into a highly advanced scout, capable of sneaking behind enemy lines and locating hidden targets. To protect these systems, the Phoenix Hawk is equipped with 8 tons of Star Guard Ferro-Fibrous Armor.

The PXH-4S was developed based on feedback about the PXH-3S. While mechwarriors generally liked the PXH-3S, there were some complaints from the field. One of the main complaints was about the short range of the Phoenix Hawk's main gun. In effort to alleviate this problem, the Thunderbolt-12 Large Pulse Laser has been replaced with a Defiance 1001 ER PPC. While sacrificing some accuracy, the Defiance 1001 has a much longer range and better penetration capability.
Supporting the ER PPC are a pair of medium lasers and a pair of Small Pulse Lasers. Taking a cue from the PXH-4D that is being developed on New Avalon, the Small Pulse Lasers have replaced the machine guns, providing the mech with an effective anti-infantry system that does not require ammunition. The anti-missile system was removed and replaced with a Guardian ECM, allowing the mech to better hide from opponents. The MASC system was retained, providing the Phoenix Hawk with the ability to quickly escape dangerous situations.

Like many new designs developed by the Free Worlds League, the PXH-3M was rushed into production with out sufficient consideration of how to best apply the technologies recovered from the Helm Memory Core. The result was a powerfully armed mech that could not sustain a high rate of fire due to it's inadequate cooling system. After the initial shock of the Clan assault wore off the FWL engineers began to re-evaluate their designs, coming up with improved versions. Several different versions of the Phoenix Hawk were proposed during this process. Most of the designs sacrificed the Machine Guns and Anti-Missile Systems for additional heatsinks or armor. While these improved the performance of the mech, the designs did not really stand out from other mechs.
While trying to determine the best configuration of the Phoenix Hawk one engineer suggested sacrificing one of the ER Large Lasers for a NARC launcher. Reports from the field were coming with complaints about LRM equipped mechs that were carrying a Narc launcher. These mechs were forced to close with enemy mechs to deploy their Narc beacons and then retreat so as to be able to use their LRMs. It was suggested that the Phoenix Hawk could be used as a spotter. It's superior speed and mobility would allow it to close with enemy targets, while it had enough armor to survive. Trials with a PXH-3M that was modified to replace one of the ER Large Lasers with a Narc Beacon proved highly successful. It was recommended that the design be put into immediate production.
Taking advantage of the need to retool the factory for the new design, several other minor changes were introduced with the PXH-4M. The Machine Guns and Anti-Missile Systems were removed from the mech. In their place the designers add an additional heatsink, more armor, a Flamer and a small laser.
The new Phoenix Hawk is being assigned to fire support lances, where it can deploy it's Narc Beacons against enemy targets and provide close in protection for the other mechs in it's lance.

A nice opening trio Irose!

These two Periphery variants were developed simultaneously, but separately, they share nearly everything with the exception of their respective tertiary weapons.. The Outworlds Alliance feature a new ER large laser developed by Lushann Industrials Ltd. which is based on technology acquired from Johnston Industries in the Federated Suns. The ferro-fibrous armor comes from the Draconis Combine and the seven tons of armor is actually slightly less than the PXH-1D that it is based upon. Alliance Defenders Ltd. has begun converting the Wasp line on Alpheratz to production of this new Phoenix Hawk. Weaponry features the aforementioned ER large laser, a medium laser and a pair of small lasers.
The Canopian/Taurian version is exactly the same as the Alliance version with the exception of a small pulse laser replacing the two small lasers. Production will be on the Taurian world of New Vandenberg once the facility has been finished.

Note: The next batch of designs are based on the original 3050 Phoenix Hawk upgrades and they correct what I see as deficiencies in those designs
After fighting three separate Clans, the Draconis Combine took note of the deficiencies in their 'modern' upgrades. From these observations and the continued development of recovered technologies two new variants of the Phoenix Hawk have been developed. Both take advantage of the new C3 technology with one being fitted with a C3 Slave and the other a C3 Master. The first model strips away one of the ER Large Lasers and replaces it with a variety of electronics including a C3 Slave and a Beagle active probe. An AMS system has been added with the ammo protected by CASE. One of the Medium Pulse Lasers was replaced by a pair of standard medium lasers. Additionally, there was an addition half-ton of ferro-fibrous armor added.
The second model, the PXH-4KM, Replaces one of the ER large lasers of the PXH-3K with a C3 Master unit while two medium lasers replace one of the medium pulser just like the PXH-4K. Armor remains the sames the PXH-3K.

There are two new variants from the Federated Suns that deviate far from the PXH-3D. So much so that each of them uses an autocannon for its primary weapon. The first variant, the PXH-4D strips all but one medium pulser from the weapons loadout. In the place of all these weapons, a GM model LB 10-X autocannon is mounted in the right arm along with two tons of ammunition. Along with medium pulser, s standard medium laser and a small pulser are also carried. An additional ton of standard armor is also carried. To make room for all this two double heat sinks have been removed.

The second new variant, the PXH-4D2, makes use of a standard Class 5 autocannon in place of the LB 10-X. This is in anticipation of the new specialized ammunition currently in development by General Motors and Johnston Industries. It has a two-ton ammunition bay. The laser weaponry is the same as the PXH-4D with a Streak SRM2 launcher added for addional short-ranged firepower. This model is now fitted with none tons of standard armor.

Overview:
A small military unit known as the Ghost Furies whom operate out of the old Rim Worlds anti-spinward reach have begun fielding some pretty impressive lostech refits as of late. While this diverse group of Mechwarriors is widely believed to be a force for good whom exactly their powerful benefactor(s) is remains a mystery. Known for their hunting of several pirates in the area and hording of rare tech (such as a large cache LAM parts) their home base can’t be pointed currently. Intelligence reports indicate that they are led by Captain Ayokunle Dubazana formerly of the AFFC who retired after the Truce of Tukayyid. Going into business with a few other Mechwarriors for hire they departed on their first bandit hunt in September of 3052. Since than the group has more than tripled in size recently adding supporting infantry and aerospace assets. Their tech squad appears quite adept at lostech salvage and engineering superior field refits for the Furies who continually spar with the worst dregs of pirates out on the Rim.
Capabilities:
One of the first lostech refits carried out at the direction of Dubazana by the noteworthy Chen brothers was performed on his personal PHX-1 Phoenix Hawk named Sudden Impact. The ‘Mech is so-named for the commander’s fondness of Death from Above maneuvers which is legendary among the unit much to the constant chagrin of Chief Tech Robert Chen. Continual damage to the legs had to be repaired after these deadly high intensity crashes which often resulted in Dubazana’s victory. In order to maximize the survivability of the ancient BattleMech under these conditions Chen planned to reinforce the armor to the max degree. To that end the eight tons of Durallex Light armor plating was stripped off and old GM 270 Fusion Engine removed to make way for lostech components. This made way for a new GM 270 XL Engine, thirteen Double Heat Sinks, and Lexington Limited High-Grade Ferro-Fibrous. Eight and a half tons of this advanced armor plating provided near maximum protection for the Phoenix Hawk. All of these modifications left room for further additions which included two Defiance Model 6 ER Large Lasers placed in either arm. While the old Harmon Heavy Laser was eliminated these two new lostech versions had longer range. The two Machine Guns and their ammunition was also removed to make way for a single Defiance B3S Small Laser mounted in the head. Much of the original design still remained like the two Harmon Medium Lasers, the trademark torso mounted Pitban 9000jump jets, the Tek brand electronic systems, and of course the rugged original Orguss Stinger chassis.
Deployment:
While only one of these ‘Mechs is currently known to exist a certain Lyran defense contractor has been reviewing its performance. Coventry Metal Works has been intrigued by this ‘custom knock off 3M’ and is considering purchasing the rights for mass production. Rumors claim that company executives have been displeased by the performance of the 3S and are looking for alternatives. The personal involvement of Duke Thomas Bradford of Coventry at the most recent visit by Captain Dubazana has raised some eyebrows in the intelligence community.

Overview:
With the loss of most of Rasalhague's factories first to the FRR and then to
the Clans, the DCMS had been limited in its ability to replace some designs for
over a decade.
With their home planet occupied, stray assets of GKE were finally convinced in
3051 to accept an offer (more of an ultimatum) by the Combine's government to
set up business in long disused factories on New Samarkand, borrowing heavily
to pay Luthien Armor Works for one of the old New Samarkand Armor Works
facilities.
Eager to start paying off their loans, GKE decided to put their efforts into
revitalising the iconic medium 'Mech that had served through the Succession
Wars, hoping that the Phoenix Hawk would be emblematic of their own rise from
the ashes.
Capabilities:
Using the same 360 Hermes extra-light reactor as the new Grand Dragon, the
Phoenix Hawk can now compete in agility with even high end Clan designs.
The only armament is a single extended range PPC, offering long range punch but
with little fall back if the weapon is damaged. GKE point out that this should
keep mechwarriors from over-extending in a damaged machine and force them to
return for repairs.
Deployment:
The DCMS has sent dozens of damaged Phoenix Hawks for rebuilding by GKE, which
is enough to keep the company from falling behind on repaying their debts in
the short term, but new production is still at least a year away. There seems
little likelhood that the new Phoenix Hawk will be in any hands but the
Dragon's until GKE's finances stablise, which given predatory government
oversight won't be anytime soon.

That's a fast one drak!

The Phoenix Hawk PHX-3MS is a variant of the 3M model born out of a peculiar opportunity. When the first PHX-3M were given to units of the 1st Marik Militia, the ‘MechWarriors were impressed by the extra firepower provided by the twin ER Large Lasers but less by the secondary weapons and the lack of heat management to move and shoot.
This lead to two different directions: the PHX-R Roc of Captain Paul Master and the PHX-3MS sponsored by Flame Tech, a manufacturer of Fletcher where the Marik Militia unit was stationed. Having been found guilty of embezzling funds and failing to deliver, Flame Tech new board knew that if something wasn’t done, they would disappear. This is why they offered their services to improve free of charge any ‘Mech for the Marik unit garrisoning the planet and the PHX-3M was selected.
Always eager to secure new tools and given the trend running through the Free Worlds League with improvements being made on all ‘Mechs, the commanding officers of the 1st Marik Militia gave the go-ahead to this project.
Unable to afford to invest too much money in this project, Flame Tech decided to keep most of it: dropping almost all its weapons. One of the twin Diverse Optics Sunbeam Er Large Lasers was kept and the other sold for a Magna Mk III Large Lasers bought from old surplus produced for the classical Marik Wolverine. Some says that it was made to keep heat under controlable levels but others would argue that Flame Tech did a good operation by selling back the ER Large Lasers for old surplus of classical ones. 5 of their own Martell Medium Lasers were added to increase the damage at closer ranges. Given the aggressive nature of the test pilot assigned to the development of the PHX-3MS, a Guardian ECM was added to further disturb the electronical warfare capacity of his opponents, the armour was increased to almost the maximum possible on this chassis and since he always seemed to be on the verge of overheating, a TSM was also selected to improve both its speed and physical damage capacity while using the otherwise quite taxing weapons for the 10 Double Heat Sinks that were kept and making good use of the Phoenix Hawk mix of weapons and mobility. This was seen by Flame Tech as a marketing bonus that fitted part of the name of the BattleMech, the Phoenix part of the Phoenix Hawk.
Because of the rather quiet sector where the first prototypes were developed, it saw no combat trial before the operational trials made some months later by the 8th Orloff Grenadiers in the Periphery (as the Free Worlds League didn’t want to deploy a ‘Mech “designed†by Flame Tech without fully testing it) where parts of a pirate band had managed to get through the first defensive line of the Marik unit and began to loot and burn down a small town where the 8th had its supply depots.
‘MechWarrior Yiannis BÄdakku in his PHK-3MS both the closest and the speediest ‘Mech available reached first the area and immediately found himself under the fire of the pirates as well as their flames added to the fires burning in town. The plan of the pirates that were more numerous but lighter was to overheat the Marik ‘Mech, ignoring that it was packing a TSM, a piece of equipment not widely available or used at that time.
Although the final result saw the destruction of the PHK-3MS when ‘MechWarrior BÄdakku decided to put itself in front of civilians targeted by the pirates before destroying the Firestarter, last survivor of the band, his ultimate fate was immortalised by a local author in one poem, ensuring that the popularity of the new Phoenix Hawk in the knightly mood that was beginning to go through the all Free Worlds League Military

Targeting & Tracking System: Octagon Tartrac System C
Overview:
The 3rd Marik Civil War drove weapons manufacturers to develop some of the deadliest designs the InnerSphere has ever seen. Earthwerks Incorporated set out to improve on its PHX-3M with what some have dubbed the ultimate Phoenix Hawk. They utilized historical archives of Star League Royal Phoenix Hawks as well as the rapidly proliferating Blazer to enhance their new design’s battlefield potency. Only hampered by component delays and import trouble the PHX-4M is set to become the mainstay of Marik Commonwealth forces for years to come.
Capabilities:
The 4M reimagines the Phoenix Hawk’s arsenal using PXH-1 as a guide post. First, the massive Diverse Optics Twin Sun Binary Laser Cannon replaced the two Diverse Optics Sunbeam Extended Range Large Lasers found on the PHX-3M. This restored the ‘Mechs signature look and focused its heavy energy beams into a single massive burst with enough firepower to take vaporize the head of any BattleMech. While critics say it doesn’t have the range of two Extended Range Larges or the overall hitting power of these separate lasers it is more heat friendly. To better support this main gun designers went back to the two Harmon Medium Lasers rather than their shorter ranged Pulse successors. These tried and true complements function very effectively with the Blazer especially when the BattleMech is running. Two Sunglow Prism Optic Small Pulse Lasers replace the Machine Guns of the PXH-1 as a final defense against infantry attack. Without the need for ammunition this all energy armament can enable the Phoenix Hawk to remain in the field indefinitely without the need for resupply. Finally, a Guardian ECM Suite mounted in the center torso was added to improve this its defenses which is allegedly what Star League Royal variant of the Phoenix Hawk did as well. Any extra tonnage was placed into armor plating which rose to nine and a half tons of Durallex Light which provided the maximum amount of protection for this forty five ton BattleMech.
Deployment:
Problems importing necessary components have so far limited production of the PHX-4M Phoenix Hawk to only a few dozen units. These have been entrusted to the Minister-General’s finest troops who have utilized them impressively thus far against the Periphery invaders of the Free Worlds League and their traitorous allies.

Final day for entries folks!
-
My fluff on the 4M was rather uninspired.
-
The Draconis Combine debuted two new Phoenix Hawk medium-weight BattleMechs in 3047. Developed by Alshain Weaponry, these new upgrades did not follow the path of prior DCMS Phoenix Hawk variants. These 'Mechs retained their jump-jets for maximum mobility. Intended to serve as heavy scouts and scout leaders, Alshain Weaponry replaced the original GM 270 Fusion Engine with a light-weight GM 270XL Extra-Light Fusion Engine taken from the production lines for Wolf Trap (produced on Luthien by Luthien Armor Works).
The weight savings allowed the design team to incorporate a Tanadi Citizen C3 Slave Module in the basic model (PHX-2K), along with a Diplan Inquisitor Beagle Active Probe, a New Samarkand Nimbus Guardian ECM Suite, and a Tanadi Forward-1 Target Acquisition System. These electronics made the new PHX-2K an exceptional scout . . . but the improvements did not stop there!
Alshain Weaponry replaced the old Durallex armor with New Samarkand Royal Ferro-fibrous (8.5 tons for near maximum armor protection on a 45-ton biped design!). The Harmon Medium Lasers were retained (but moved to the center torso) as were the two M100 Machine-guns (both moved to the left arm, along with a half-ton of ammunition). The design concept originally featured CASE to protect the MG ammunition, but having an extra ton-and-a-half to spare, the design team eliminated CASE to upgrade the original Large Laser of the Phoenix Hawk to a Lord's Light PPC.
While some critics questioned why Alshain did not instead use an ER PPC (i.e., the Lord's Light 2), the answer was simple. Even with double-strength heat sinks, the PHX-2K still runs hot on a jumping Alpha Strike even with the basic PPC. Using one of the new ER PPCs, the excess overheat production would be even greater.
With the loss of the Alshain plant to Clan Ghost in 3051, the DCMS and Alshain Weaponry set about to overhaul and expand the facility on Tok Do. Although not yet capable of producing the new PXH-2K (and -2KM), the factory on Tok Do is expected to begin its first production run by the end of 3057.

The second variant is the PHX-2KM, which removes the TAG, Guardian, Beagle, and C3 Slave Module to install a Tanadi Coordinator C3 Master Computer. All other components and weaponry remains the same. This fast-moving and nimble BattleMech serves as a exceptional scout-leader and is able to coordinate the efforts of an entire scout lance (provided that the scouts are equipped with a C3 Slave Module).

I have removed by non-fluffed designs. They were going to be DQ'd anyway, so I now see little use in them being posted
-
You snuck that in last minute there masterarminas, nice job!
Alrighty folks that is that. No more entries please. This contest has concluded. "Today we celebrate our Independence Day!"

Any time frame on getting these (and later entries) evaluated? I know (and understand) if you are pressed by real life into leaving these aside for the moment.

Ok, this review is now underway folks!

Well this one was a good one folks with sixteen entries by six designers (3 Irose, 7 Abele, 2 Takiro, 1 drakensis, 1 Ice Hellion, 2 masterarminas) and all of them solid. No disqualifications which really makes me smile until I have to choose who wins. That was really tough this time around especially for our Kurita candidates who were particularly good and numerous this go around. I thought there would actually be more Marik candidates as I identify that Mech with the Free Worlds League but all of those entries may have been even better than the Dragon's foray. Anyway lets get down to business here.
PASSABLE
16. PHX-3B (Takiro)
As I take it hardest on myself during these contests this excellent take on the Phoenix Hawk based on our Ghost Furies campaign ends up in last place. I thought it was an excellent contender for the Steiner model but another contestant beat it out pretty thoroughly. I do have to concede that Dubazana's optimal take was based on the 3M more so than the 3S even though it all began with a standard chassis from a PXH-1 which the lostech FWL upgrade did not. It did use the 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) and two ER Large Lasers but utilized eight point five tons of ferro-fibrous armor (152 factor) for near maximum protection. In order to improve the heat dissipation this variant added three Double Heat Sinks for a total of thirteen. To pay for this armor and cooling enhancement the original two Medium Lasers are retained. Finally, a Small Laser was added to provide some point blank support which replaced the original's Machine Guns. All in all a really good lostech variant but it ends up being a unique design which is already part of the Salient Horizon universe at best.
15. PXH-4D2 (Abele)
This Davion Autocannon/5 variant built to utilize developing specialized muntions was interesting. Given the Federated Suns obsession with the Autocannon I am ok with it even though the EndoSteel chassis, the 270 XL Engine (6/9/6), and ten Double Heat Sinks go in the other direction. At least outwardly they are high tech and the AC/5 is perhaps the lowest tech of the autocannons. Nine tons of standard armor (144 factor) with CASE works well to protect the design but the rest of the weaponry I didn't love either. The Medium Pulse, Medium Laser, and Small Pulse are all alright I geuss but not a fan of the single Streak SRM-2 cause of all that ammo (50) rounds. Perhaps if you went for two launchers I could gett behind it especially as a 'test bed design.' That is what it feels like to me overall at best, a limited research project but nothing more.
14. PHX-2P1 (Abele)
While this slight lostech upgrade of this 'Periphery Hawk' only uses seven tons of ferro-fibrous (125 factor) armor and an ER Large Laser its manufacturer was a bridge too far for me. I doubt the Outworlds Alliance would have the capability to produce this BattleMech on its own. You addressed the supply of the high tech items but the lack of industrial base in the Alliance is difficult to overcome in my eyes. If it had been tied into the Draconis Combine's loss of their Phoenix Hawk during the Clan Invasion and a massive investment by the Martial Alliance (ComStar, FedCom, Kurita backed anti-Clan coalition) then maybe but simply switching a Wasp line to this project would not be enough bud, sorry. While the Standard chassis could be derived from a Stinger and bulked up the 270 Fusion Engine (6/9/6) would have to be accounted for as well. The thirteen Single Heat Sinks, the Medium Laser, and two Small Lasers could be gotten yes but the lack of infrastructure for House Avellar is too much for me to get past.
CONTENDERS
13. PXH-4D (Abele)
This Davion LB-X Autocannon variant is intrguing as it goes ballistic rather than energy for its main weapon. An LB 10-X AC with two tons of ammo (20) would eliavate any overheating concerns which most Phoenix Hawks face thanks to movement from jumping and their overwhelming laser batteries. This main gun combined with ten Double Heat Sinks makes this a heat friendly design and ammuntion concerns are negated as well thanks to the eight point five tons of standard armor (136 factor) with CASE. The EndoSteel chassis and the 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) allow you the room to pull all of this off which the Federated Commonwealth could certainly do. It fits well in the universe and my only objection might come from its supporting weaponry of a Medium Pulse, a Medium Laser, and a Small Pulse. I probably would have gone with four Medium Lasers and called it an anti-Elemental Hawk or a more traditional two Medium Lasers and two Small Pulses. However, that being said the design is quite good on its own and could have been a winner but another was better.
12. PXH-4K (Abele)
Another solid entry was this Kurita design using a Standard chassis, the 270 XL Engine (6/9/6), along with a dozen Double Heat Sinks, and protected by eight and a half tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) with CASE. Armed with an ER Large Laser, a Medium Pulse, two Medium Lasers, and an Anti-Missile System (12) this Draconis variant was well designed. A C3 Slave and a Beagle Active Probe serve to further enhance its electronic scouting capabilities which were already pretty good. Very nicely done but unfortunately I thought there were better designs for the Dragon which shows you how good the competition was here.
11. PXH-4KM (Abele)
Abele built on his very solid 4 series Kurita Phoenix Hawk with this command variant which I liked even better. Stripping out the Anti-Missile System and its ammo (-1.5 tons) also allowed for the removal of the CASE and a half ton (-1 ton) of ferro fibrous armor (8 tons equals 143 factor). Replacing the C3 Slave and the Beagle Active Probe (-2.5 tons) with a C3 Master works pretty well. The rest of the BattleMech remains unchanged from its Standard chassis to its 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) along with its dozen Double Heat Sinks and armament which included an ER Large Laser, Medium Pulse, and two Medium Lasers. Very nice, only thing is that there were other Kurita designs which were better in my opinion.
10. PXH-5K (Abele)
Your Advanced Kurita 5 series Phoenix Hawk outfitted with an EndoSteel chassis, a 270 XL Engine (6/9/6), ten Double Heat Sinks, and protected by eight tons of standard armor (144 factor) with two CASEs is even better. You keep the C3 Slave and ER Large Laser main gun supplementing it with twin SRM-4s (50) and two Medium Pulses. This results in a more 'offensive' Phoenix Hawk which is desirable in light of the Clan invasion but I am not sure that manufacturing it would be possibly especially given the Combine's loss of Alshain Weaponry. Most concerning is obtaining a place to produce the new EndoSteel structure necessary for the 5K in the first place. That and better designs proved your undoing here.
NEAR MISSES
9. PHX-2P2 (Abele)
Of the two 'Periphery Hawks' presented this is the one that came the closest to making it to the winner's circle. This design based on a Standard chassis, powered by a 270 Fusion (6/9/6), cooled by thirteen Single Heat Sinks, protected by seven tons of ferro fibrous (125 factor) armor and armed with an ER Large, Medium Laser, Small Pulse was solid. The only thing was the fluff which seemed to indicate a Magistracy of Canopus and Taurian Concordat allied project. It is a bit too early for that here but I could very easily see a Calderon effort succeeding alone. They have the industry and two of the three lostech items used on it were rediscovered by the Concordat. The Taurians having independently gotten a few items of cutting edge tech already via the Maultier is really one of the undiscussed recoveries of the 3000s. I don't begrudge them getting an ER Large to somehow finish this project even though it would be an obstacle but I don't know if the Phoenix Hawk is a Taurian design per say. So with a wee bit of a fluff error, a slight ER Large parts issue, and lacking a distinctly Taurian flavor I am going to pass on this one right now. Perhaps if you added in a mercenary unit like Little Richard's Panzer Brigade training the TDF in lostech maintenance or some such could hve gotten you over the top.
8. PXH-3MS (Ice Hellion)
Such a good story with this design that ultimately finished just outside the winner's circle. Love that FlameTech got caught doing something wrong and felt the need to put this refit package together based off the 3M. The EndoSteel, the 270 XL Engine (6/9/6), ten Double Heat Sinks, and the Durallex Light (now increased to 9.5 tons which results in a near max 152 factor) armor all come from the 3050 lostech version. The Large Laser and the Medium Lasers can come from the old PXH-1 if necessary and the Guardian ECM Suite can certainly be obtained. The Triple Strength Myomer which makes this 'Hot Hawk' really come together might be tougher to obtain at this time. Its inclusion would make a lot of sense because of how hot the Phoenix Hawk usually runs especially this one. The fluff including the deployment was so good I really considered this one for the winner's circle. However, with other better designs already ahead of this Mech this one sort of got left behind. Sorry Ice, it is a good one but just misses here.
7. PHX-4K (drakensis)
This Kurita fast sniper makes an excellent use of available parts in putting this concept together. Using the Standard Phoenix Hawk chassis and the Draconis control economy to force a corporate marriage in the wake of Clan devastation really works. Adding a 360 XL Engine (8/12/8) makes this BattleMech into a true fast scout which is paired with an ER PPC. The only weapon has great hitting power and range giving it wonderful capabilties which doesn't run dry on ammunition because its an energy based cannon. Ten Double Heat Sinks do an excellent job of cooling the design and six tons of ferro-fibrous (107 factor) armor combined with its high speed and mobility (matching a Spider!) do a good job at protecting it. Minor minuses were the lack of a C3 computer or secondary weaponry but that is no doubt a sacrifice made because of the massive engine. It was tough decision but another Kurita design narrowly, and I stress the word narrowly, beat you. Great concept though drak!
WINNERS
6. PXH-4M (Irose)
While this wasn't the best Phoenix Hawk from the Free Worlds League (House Marik) it was a winner thanks to its Narc Missile Beacon (6). Using the 3M as a basis this upgrade retains the EndoSteel chassis, 270 XL Engine (6/9/6), two Medium Pulses, and one of the ER Larges. The other is dropped for the NARC Launcher and a ton of Beacons which helps with the Phoenix Hawk's heat problems. A Flamer and a Small Laser were added for point defense with another ton and a half going to armor (9.5 tons total for a 152 near max factor). Finally one additionally Double Heat Sink, for a total of eleven, was added to deal with the heat generated by this design. While still hot this upgrade addresses that problem and also the FWLM need for NARC platforms at this time. I did like one other Marik entry better but this one met a requirement and was well done making it into the winner's circle. Congrats Irose, your 4N as I will call it in the Salient Horizon universe made it!
5. PHX-2KM (masterarminas)
The winning Kurita command variant by masterarminas shares many desirable features of the base design. Built on available/ pre-existing Standard Phoenix Hawk chassis and the 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) produced for the Wolf Trap construction of this BattleMech while confined to renovation of older Draconis models would be most possible in the present. With the fall of Alshain Weaponry's facility to the Clans during the invasion this will have to be the way of things until a more permenant solution can be implemented. Ten Double Heat Sinks and 8.5 tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) are also nice lostech additions which further enhance the design. While its weaponry appears to be backwards thanks to older but widely available level one weaponry like the PPC, two Medium Lasers, and two Machine Guns (100) it works. This proven armament also adds to its 'design of the now' feeling which I like and above all in the case of this model it features a C3 Master Computer. This innovation allows the Phoenix Hawk to serve as a lance network command asset for the Combine which was something I was looking for plus it also has the ability to 'TAG' opponents for artillery. I really like it and as always the fluff is spot on so congrats masterarminas your 'Dragon Hawk' made it!
4. PHX-4M (Takiro)
The Marik entry I liked best was my own design wise even though I thought the fluff was rather uninspired. This 'Blazer Hawk' is largely based on the 3M (EndoSteel chassis) which replaces it's two ER Large Lasers for one Binary Laser Cannon. This had the effect of endowing it with a headcapper weapon that did less heat than both the longer ranged lostech lasers. With the 'Mechs solid speed and mobility provided by the 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) this loss of reach shouldn't really effect it poorly. Endowing it with 9.5 tons of standard armor (152 factor) gives it near max protection which this hard charging Hawk now needs. A Guardian ECM Suite also helps these defenses adding an electronic stealth to its capabilities. Supporting the Blazer at mid-range are two Medium Lasers which are further backed by twin Small Pulse Lasers which can deal with infantry. This all energy arsenal can keep the Phoenix Hawk in the field indefinitely and makes for an excellent hard hitting raider. A dozen Double Heat Sinks do a pretty good job of cooling this design although heat still remains a concern for Mechwarriors. I placed it here which I considered appropraite for this new FWLM weapon which is just outside the medal zone.
3. PXH-4D (Irose)
This new Federated Commonwealth (Davion) model made by Achernar BattleMechs on New Avalon corrects the mistakes of the 3D. Retaining the EndoSteel chassis the design elects to go back the old 270 Fusion (6/9/6) for greater reliability and toughness. This also greatly reduces the cost and allows for 8 tons of ferro fibrous (143 factor) armor as ample protection. With ten Double Heat Sinks all fitting in the 270 rated standard power plant this extra bulk from the armor plating fits within the design well. Only one ER Large is kept along with two 2 Medium Lasers for support and a Small Pulse for point defense operations. This produces only light damage but managable heat which is acceptable because of its advanced electronics package. Equipped with both a Guardian ECM Suite and a Beagle Active Probe this Phoenix Hawk becomes a truly modern medium weight scout which is quite durable as well as affordable. A solid tool in the hands of the AFFC at this time in particular which matches well with the Lyran winner as well. Nice job on the bronze medal!
2. PHX-2K (masterarminas)
This large Kurita large scout with solid fluff narrowly beat out drakensis 4K for the top Draconis spot in this contest. I emphasize the word NARROWLY cause man both of these were exceptional concepts. This one featured a Standard chassis, a 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) still in production thanks to the Wolf Trap, ten Double Heat Sinks, and is protected by 8.5 tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor). The venerable weapons array belies a nod torwards Takashi traditionalists with an old school PPC, two Medium Lasers, and two Machine Guns (100) doing a nice job. What put the design over the top was pairing this arsenal with one of the most sophisticated electronics packages ever assembled for the new school tactics of Theodore's adherents. A Beagle Active Probe, a Guardian ECM Suite, Targeting Acquistion Gear (TAG), and a C3 Slave create a fantastic scout for the Dragon in its ultimate time of need. All the components are accounted for and even without a factory older models can be refitted into this premier recon Mech. Well done and silver medal!!
1. PXH-4S (Irose)
The Phoenix Sniper as I call it comes from the Federated Commonwealth (Steiner) by way of Coventry Metal Works of course. Working off the 3S it essentially replaces the Large Pulse with an ER PPC creating a deadly sniper. With a Standard chassis at its core extensive refits are possible although difficult even though new builds are likely more practical. Powered by a 270 XL Engine (6/9/6) and boosted with a MASC (12) this model can even match drakensis 4K sniper for short periods. This combination allows for 8.5 tons of ferro-fibrous (152 factor) armor as well as two Medium Lasers and two Small Pulses which serve in support of the ER PPC. While the ten Double Heat Sinks can be overwhelmed I think the operational capabilities are worth it. Also a Guardian ECM Suite is added to aid in its electronic defenses which is a benefit to any would be sniper. I think it also makes a good partner for the 4D which Irose also proposed here. Great job Irose on the gold medal winner of this contest!!!

I guess I've been doing this wrong. Quantity is not a quality of its own. The Russians were wrong, too.

Almost competed for this one as I've watched a lot of anime in my life. I wanted to do one based of the image below. I just have been non creative with fluff recently.
