Optimizing the Scorpion
« on: October 18, 2020, 10:59:28 PM »

As Abele has quite correctly predicted contest twenty-nine will deal with our first four-legged friend, the Scorpion. Another one of the unseen, I can’t say this quad was one of my favorites initially but as the concept has developed so has my interest. While I will talk about this further in my posts I can’t wait to see what you guys can do with the Scorpion in the Salient Horizon setting!

Design Criteria
Design: Scorpion Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 55 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday October 30th 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

SCP-2M Scorpion

The first upgraded Scorpion to be seen in the Inner Sphere was the model designated as the SCP-2M.  The design concept originated with Brigadier Corporation and was (somewhat loosely) based on the SCP-1T upgrade to the Scorpion that appeared in the Taurian Concordat in the mid 3020's.

Taurian engineers at VMI had removed the massive VOX 330 fusion engine and instead installed a CoreTek 275; while this reduced the maximum speed, it also freed up a large amount of space giving these new Taurian Scorpions armor and armament more appropriate to a 55-ton BattleMech.  Additional improvements by VMI included a 3-dimensional stabilized cockpit (mounted on gimbals to control pitch, yaw, and roll) and heavy-duty shock absorbers mounted in the legs that removed most of the "rough ride" syndrome endemic to Scorpions since their initial introduction in 2570.

Using the VMI model as their baseline, Brigadier planned to incorporate a new Endo-Steel II internal chassis to free up additional weight, along with double-strength heat sinks.  As the newly (re-) developed ER PPC was still not available, they retained the exceptional Anderson Armaments PPC of the original SCP-1N.  But four LRM-5 launchers (fed by three tons of ammunition in a CASE protected left torso for a total of 18 quadruple salvos) replace the Marvel Six-Pack SRM-6 launcher.

Armor protection was greatly increased to eleven tons of standard armor, allowing the SCP-2M to take a Class 20 autocannon strike to any leg or forward torso without damaging the internal structure.

These Scorpions had not yet entered production when the Brigadier facilities on Oliver were captured by the LCAF during the War of 3039.  The SCP-2M languished for nearly a decade until Hanse Davion was finally convinced that the design could fit well within the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth.  Only two changes were made from the original Marik design; the LRM-5 launchers were replaced with Coventry Five-Tube LRMs produced by the Lyran Commonwealth and the original planned head-mounted Medium Laser was replaced with Target Acquisition Gear for designating artillery strikes.  This also had the effect of making the new Scorpion heat-neutral even on a running Alpha Strike.

By 3051, the first of these upgraded Scorpions were entering service with the AFFC, and while there were still many MechWarriors who wanted nothing to do with a Scorpion, those who worked with the new upgrade were quite vocal about the improvements, pronouncing the upgrade as a truly superior medium-weight fire-support 'Mech.

SCP-2FC Scorpion

After Oliver (and the Brigadier Corporation factory complex there) was taken by the Lyran Commonwealth in the War of 3039, Defiance Industries began looking at several of the designs either currently in production or planned for future production by House Marik.  Among those designs was the SCP-2M Scorpion.  But Defiance believed they could do better.

By 3050, a new production line on Furillo had been assembled for what would become the SCP-2FC Scorpion.  This upgrade was intended to stay more "true" to the original Scorpion than the model that was being produced on Oliver.

The VOX 330 engine was retained . . . but as an Extra-Light Fusion Engine, not a standard one!  While cost increased dramatically, it allowed Defiance engineers to retain the speed of the original design . . . and they stole the 3-dimensional cockpit stabilization system of the SCP-2M completely!  Then, in an effort to neutralize one of the largest complaints about the Scorpion (and other quad 'Mechs)--the inability to torso twist--Defiance installed six jump jets!  This decision gives the SCP-2FC the mobility of the 20-ton Stinger and Wasp . . . but on a 'Mech mounting eleven tons of standard armor plating!

Twelve double-strength heat sinks were installed to deal with the heat produced by the jump jets and the weapons array:  a Defiance 1001 ER PPC, three Defiance Streak Streak SRM-2 launchers (fed by a single ton of ammunition in a CASE protected left torso), and a Defiance B3M Medium Laser. This was not enough to make the design heat-neutral, but only movement heat is generated on an Alpha Strike . . . with all three Streak launchers locking on a target!  The AFFC deemed this to be sufficient for their needs.

The first examples of the SCP-2FC reached AFFC units in early 3053 where it proved quite effective in action against the Clans--who were not expecting a jumping Scorpion with actual armor and not just tin-foil plating!

By 3054, the upgrade had received much praise from units to which they were assigned and slowly the new Scorpions (both this model and the "Marik" model produced by Brigaider) began to attain acceptance among the AFFC MechWarriors.

SCP-2T Scorpion

While the Taurian Concordat was quite "peeved" as first the Free Worlds League, and then the Federated Commonwealth (!!), stole their proprietary cockpit stabilization technology for the SCP-1T Scorpion, they too decided to upgrade existing 'Mechs to incorporate newly recovered technology.  Indeed, Protector Thomas Calderon bank-rolled Vandenberg Mechanized Industries to restore and retool a damage production line on Illiushin to produce the new Taurian SCP-2T Scorpion.

As always, the Concordat took a more conservative approach, with standard armor, standard internal structure, and a standard 275 Core Tek fusion engine.  However, double-strength heat sinks were installed in place of the older standard heat sinks, and a full twelve tons of armor was mounted (more than many contemporary heavy-weight 'Mechs!).

Armament consisted of a Diverse Optics Sunbeam Extended-Range Large Laser (center torso), a Marvel Six-Pack SRM-6 launcher (with a ton of ammunition CASE protected in the right torso), and two Delta Dart LRM-5 launchers (fed by two tons of ammunition protected by CASE in the left torso).  Although able to overheat, the amount produced is minimal and equal only to the movement heat generated by the new Taurian Scorpions.

Potential damage out is equal to that of the SCP-2M . . . and the armor protection for MechWarriors is simply superb.  Although VMI is capable of producing less than 20 new Scorpions each year, these are eagerly awaited by the TDF and a handful of lucky mercenary commands able to obtain a procurement contract.

I like it too but the upgraded one looks cooler as the old one.

Is it really any surprise that I like the Scorpion;)

I like it too but the upgraded one looks cooler as the old one.

Agreed.  The old one looks "Funky" and not in a good way!  The new one looks much better.

Long distained by MechWarriors across the Inner Sphere the Scorpion is one of the oldest designs still in production. Debuting at the centennial of the Mackies entrance into the new norm for war, the first quad BattleMech designed. Though a very serviceable design with an impressive speed and weapons package, the design was shunned by MechWarriors used to the gait of the traditional humanoid design. Along with lower protection than others in its weight class the design lacked the Jump Jets that many pilots liked on their medium weight rides. All of these reasons allowed the design to survive but never flourish its long history. Relegated to militias and other second line forces the cheap but serviceable design was never upgraded or altered by the Brigadier Corporation until the planet Oliver was taken over by the Federated Commonwealth. With the massive amount of resources available to the FC it took time but eventually it was determined to upgrade the facilities taken over during the 4th Succession War. The Scorpion being one of the last designs produced there to be upgraded with LosTech.

Seen as a second-line design with usual inexperienced pilots at the controls the weapons load was designed with that in mind. Starting from the Internal Structure upwards the design was totally updated with the new appearance totally different from its original look. Utilizing the new lighter but bulkier Endo Steel structure was seen as a gamble on a design that already lacked internal space due to its quad design. The tonnage savings though was worth it for an increase in other areas, primarily the major seen weakness of armor and maneuverability. Adding 5 tons of armor and the ability to jump for up to 150 meters. The downside was that they also needed to lower the top speed of the design to 87 kph, though this allowed the design to have a much more common sized engine that allows for easier procurement of replacements and parts. Replacing the Anderson Armaments PPC with similar sized but more accurate Large Pulse Laser sacrificing range is seen as fine in the more urban settings that militia find themselves fighting in. Replacing the older Marvel SRM-6 with 4 Streak SRM 2 packs again increasing the accuracy of the system but this time sacrificing tonnage for this ability. Protecting the ammo systems with a CASE system is seen a boon by the average militiaman and was added as a means for militiamen to live longer and upgrade overall ability with more veterans surviving. An Electronic Countermeasure Suite was the last change to the design allowing the design to ambush its opponents. While drastically improving the design in many minds the Brigadier Corporation has been able to do so with little cost increase impressing many minds within the Federated Commonwealth and may be in line for further grants awarded.

Am I the only one that wants to put a fluid gun on it with acid??  ;D

So they were designed in 3050 and came into use in 3053 perfect timing for trial runs on Solaris (acid warheads)

Two good ones Bradshaw that need fluff of course but your acid bath one is a DQ waiting to happen. Looks like it use tech outside the realm of the challenge.

In regards to art I'd have to say the new stuff does indeed look better IMO.

Keep those legal entries coming folks!

Hate to say but that gun is pre spaceflight tech, so fluid gun should be legal

Scorpion SCP-3S

Mass: 55 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Quad
Rules Level: Experimental Tech
Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 10,903,217 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,457

Chassis: Brigadier 800F Standard
Power Plant: Hermes 275 Fusion XL Engine
Walking Speed: 54.0 km/h
Maximum Speed: 86.4 km/h (108.0 km/h)
Jump Jets: None
    Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: Unknown Standard Armor
Armament:
    1  Binary Laser Cannon
    1  LRM-20 w/ Artemis IV FCS
Manufacturer: Brigadier Corporation
    Primary Factory: Oliver
Communications System: Unknown
Targeting and Tracking System: Unknown

Overview:
When rebuilding their factory with AFFC funding, Brigadier decided to put the Scorpion back into service, sure they could use centuries of complaints about the design to address its flaws and produce a 'Mech that would be welcomed and put them back on the map as an innovator.

Whether they succeeded or not, the arrival of the Clans ensured that Brigadier would be able to sell the Scorpion to the AFFC or, failing that, to mercenaries who found their existing sources were being bought up by national militaries.

Capabilities:
Brigadier didn't manage to get an extra-light 330 reactor ready in time, so they elected to use the Hermes 275 extra-light engine that had already been developed by TharHes for their Bushwacker project. To compensate for the slower speed, some of the tonnage freed up was used to fit MASC.

While still far from the maximum possible armour for the frame, the addition of a ton and a half of armour makes the Scorpion significantly more durable than the previous iterations of the design. CASE was considered but since the extra-light engine meant that major damage to the torso would result in a combat-loss anyway, this was rejected.

The result was considerable tonnage available for weapons and the Scorpion replaces the original PPC and SRM-6 with a far more formidable Binary Laser cannon or short and medium range combat and an Artemis-enhanced LRM rack for longer range engagements.

But how much design use does it really get? Is there a design that actually uses this "Innovation"??

And there is a Blazer! What else can we put on a Scorpion?
