Challenge number thirty is another classic BattleTech unseen ‘Mech with legendary pilots, the Shadow Hawk. From Grayson Carlyle to Marik Special Forces and other lesser known Mechwarriors this dark hawk has seen its share of action across the InnerSphere. I did use it quite a bit in my home campaigns as one of those henchman machines usually so it is readily familiar. Plenty of experiences to build on and thankfully we also have a Mech of the Week Article and BattleTeckWiki to provide us additional information. I really can’t wait to see what you guys can come up with (even though I do have some ideas of my own) for the Shadow Hawk for the Salient Horizon setting!

The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Design Traits of this Setting
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy. Facing the technologically superior Clan invaders have caused them to spend vast sums of resources on the finest technology available usually translating into high priced BattleMechs that few other factions can afford.
This is somewhat true for the Draconis Combine which has lost a significant portion of their industrial capacity to the Clans. This has been forced Kurita designers to innovate in new and different ways regardless of traditional warrior ethos which pervades the realm. Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
The Capellan Confederation typically fields cost effective designs at this time thanks to their resource strapped situation. While justifications for high end increases can be made like the Outreach Conference, Wrath of Blake technical aid, spoils of war from Isis forces, and good old Capellan espionage these should be minimized. My advice would be Periphery plus for these designs as the Confederation is under strain supporting Isis right now as it is. Growing stealth tech reflected in the Raven would be appropriate in many cases as sophisticated electronic lostech devices like the Guardian ECM Suite would be a priority for their recon designs. There is also a fire support role which is a hallmark of Liao tactical doctrine. The discovery of Thunder LRMs to deploy minefields and use of Arrow IV Artillery on the Catapult are themes which could be amplified here.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.
Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. SHD-3M Shadow Hawk
As one of the only remaining producers of the Shadow Hawk, House Marik was very interested in producing an upgraded variant. While several proposals were made, the final selection was based (loosely) upon the Royal Shadow Hawk of the SLDF . . . schematics for which were rather unexpectedly acquired by SAFE (passed along by ROM agents at the direction of ComStar).
The new SHD-3M would utilize an extra-light 275 rated fusion engine to save mass, along with an endo-steel II internal chassis and ten double strength heat sinks. These changes allowed Marik engineers at Earthwerks to increase the number of jump jets from three to five, and improve armor protection to a full 11.5 tons of standard armor (with CASE included for both torsos!).
Armament was similar to the traditional SHD-2H Shadow Hawk, but was improved in nearly all range brackets. At long range, a Holly LRM-5 launcher provided some bite, which an LB-10X autocannon (with two tons of ammunition) improved at medium range. At shorter ranges, a Martell Medium Laser and two Holly Streak SRM-2 launchers (fed by a common ton of ammunition) only added to the carnage the new Marik Shadow Hawks could produce.
At point-blank range, two Martell Small Pulse Lasers added their damage . . . and provided some vital anti-personnel capabilities. Even with just the ten standard DHS and extra jump jets, these new Shadow Hawks proved to be heat neutral on a jumping Alpha Strike.
Although expensive, House Marik and the FWLM deemed the new design as well worth the price. And the SHD-3M slowly became the most common (and desired) medium-weight BattleMech within the Free Worlds League Military.

I had two ready to go, but after doing more research I will have to rework them. I'll get them up later today once I get off work. I have a 3rd one designed,b ut it needs major fluffery work before it goes up.

While the 5M variant coming out of Earthwerks and its Calloway IV facility was well received and the first seen variant of the design in 250 years. With its quincentenary anniversary the design team behind the first upgrade of the Shadow Hawk wanted to give it one more major upgrade. While traditionally a jack of all trades design with its mix of long to short range weaponry, the engineers decided to make it more a light assault design. Inspired by the Clans' Thor design the team swapped the Ultra variety Autocannon with the other lostech autocannon an LBX. With this switch it allowed the design to have a reliant, consistent and variable main weapon system. To many hot shots had been complaining about the jamming occurring in their Ultra variety cannons. With this switch the team removed the traditional SRM system as well. While it was valuable for exploiting holes in opponents armor at short range the danger of having a missile system located next to the vulnerable pilot had cost the lives of a few Mechwarriors over the years with critical shots on the system. The Cluster ammunition of the LBX autocannon negated the need for this system. With the increased useage of advanced targeting systems being utilized primarily within the FWL itself with the new push for NARC systems the design is an outlier with its downgrading from the beefier Doombud LRM 20 system to a newly designed Doombud LRM 15 system enhanced with the Artemis FCS. Unable to mimic the Summoner with its complementary ER PPC the designers were only able to add an additional Medium Laser to the design for an additional punch at shorter ranges. So far with minimum feedback the few pilots that have received this variant have been very pleased.

An offshoot of the 5Ma work coming out of Calloway the 5M2 variant was approved by the Chancellor for Earthwerks Grand Base facility. Designed to serve as a command mech for scout lances or as the advanced forces for heavier lances, the 5M2 is more designed to be a brawler than it brother designs. Centered around its new ER PPC the design is built for extended action in the field. With its removal of the traditional LRM system, it instead has a larger Short Range Missile system in its place, assisted by the NARC missile guidance systems, it appears the design was designed as a complementary design to be utilized in conjunction with the new swarm LRM doctrine coming out of the FWL as well as potent lance mate with the plethora of Capellan Catapult Battlemechs. With its integrated MASC system it is able to quickly advance into enemy lines damaging opponents with its trio of Medium Lasers and SRMs, plant a NARC beacon on strategic targets and then quickly maneuver away from any larger opponents it may be facing. Overlooked in the original observation of the 'Mech is that it is also able to drop remote sensors while doing these maneuvers gathering valuable intelligence in the process.

Davion variant
The 2D variant for its time was a glass cannon and never appreciated by its pilots, the extra weaponry didn't negate that the 'Mech had less armor then some designs nearly half its tonnage. This was not addressed even when the Davion Quartermasters in 3049 acquired a large quantity of older 2H designs from Majesty Metals and created the 2D2 variant. With the increases in LosTech becoming more available in the past few years the 2D2 variant was a design that many sought to upgrade to a more formidable and durable design. Dropping the autocannon and long range missiles the design has been able to upgrade both medium lasers to the larger ER variants. The larger and more appreciated changes were the added 4 tons of armor and the switch to the more durable ferro fibrous weave. This has maxed out the armor capability for the tonnage. Talk has begun in certain circles of purchasing the rights to the Shadow Hawk design and having the capability of producing a even more upgraded variant of the design but for now this has only been an idea and no actions have been taken.

Kurita variant
An upgrade of the Succession War era 2K variant revealed in 2803 the 2K2 variant utilizes little upgraded technology but what it does utilize makes the design much more potent than its predecessor. Downgrading the engine to the Nissan 220 engine freed up needed tonnage to outfit the design with an increased weapons load without incorporating the costlier and more vulnerable XL variants. With the increase in available tonnage the design has upgraded its PPC to the newer ER variant. Removing the traditional long range missile system with the newer and deadlier Gauss cannon adds a fierce bite to the design. These changes have altered the designs role and is now used as a direct fire support mech often paired with the Draconis Catapult K2 variants.

Earthwerks Uncorporated has long been the Free Worlds League main producer of the Shadow Hawk and their improved SHD-5M was met with mixed reviews with a large share being not enough ammo for the missile launcher, the propensity fo the Ultra auto-cannon jamming and the lack of a 'head-capping' weapon. With this new SHD-5B model at least two of these concerns were answered in the form of the binary laser cannon. This new-ish weapon has capability to knock out an enemy Mech with one shot and, since it is ammo-independent, it cannot jam. The missile launcher is smaller, but is equipped with an Artemis IV FCS and allows for the mechwarrior to have up to twelve salvos vice the six of the previous LRM-20 launcher. The model has a half-ton more with the increase all going to the legs with a minor redistribution of the torso armor. A medium pulse laser and two standard medium lasers provide the secondary weaponry, while TAG unit has been added to allow Arrow IV and artillery fire missions to be called in by the Mech's pilot. As the new binary laser cannon is very heat intensive a total thirteen double heat sinks have been mounted on the new SHD-5B chassis.

When the engineers at the Earthwerks Capellan facility on Grand Base discovered the basic specification for the SHD-5M Shadow Hawk in a data packet in a routine corporate update they were ecstatic. The Capellan n Confederation never had the ability to produce the Shadow Hawk and now it had dropped right into their laps. As the Capellan Confederation was still rebuilding from the materiel losses of both the the Fourth Succession War and the Canopian-Andurien conflict, there was a demand for new battlemechs featuring the modern weapons recovered from the Helm Memory Core. Chief among these weapons were the ER PPC and the Gauss Rifle. It is with this thought in mind the Grand Base-based engineers set implementing a new variant featuring the Gauss Rifle as its primary weapon. Mounted in place of the Ultra AC/5 auto-cannon it is fed by a two-ton ammo bin. Given the mass of the weapon, secondary armament would be at a minimum with a pair each of standard and pulsed medium lasers. Like the SHD-5B, the SHD-4L is equipped with a head-mounted TAG unit. Armor protection is at a near maximum for the chassis with 11.5 tons of Maximillian 43 armor spread across the chassis.

The following is a common refit seen throughout the FWLM, but primarily amongst of the regiments of the Free Worlds Legionnaires. It replaces the the LRM-20 and Streak SRM-2 launchers with Artemis IV-equipped LRM-15 launcher, a medium pulse laser and CASE in the right torso. All of this removes the threat of ammo explosions in the center and right torso and gives the mech more ammo for the LRM launcher and increased accuracy. Earthwerks is giving strong consideration to revamping their production lines for the SHD-5M and putting this into mass production.

Project Nemesis is a weapons program meant to increase the offensive capabilites of the Canopian Armed Forces. Using the Shadow Hawk chassis, a smaller engine, the Warner 200N, provided by the Taurian Concordat in exchange for twenty-four variants built to Taurian requirements. Each of the Canpoian variants feature two Martell Model 5 medium lasers and a Magna200p small pulse laser as fixed equipment. Ten tons of Maximillian 42F ferro-fibrous armor protects the Mech and its pilot. The right torso is by protected CASE. Each variant can be 'easily' be re-configured to one of the other variants in under 30 man-hours at a dedicated rear area repair facility.
The first variant is a tribute to the original SHD-2H model and features the Armstrong J11 autocannon as its primary weapon. The SRM-2 launcher has been moved from the head to the center torso and its ammunition has been moved to the CASE-protected right torso. A Holly LRM-10 replaces the old LRM-5 and now has a two-ton ammo supply.

The Taurian variant of the Shadow SHD-3MC sees the removal of the fixed weapons of the Canopian variants and replaces them a Large Pulse Laser (a gift from the Capellan Congederation and a pair of medium pulse lasers. The main weapon is the Holly LRM-15 launcher and its launcher. In all other respects this Taurian version is identical to it Canopian cousins.

A product of Kallon Industries, this upgrade of the SHD-2H Shadow Hawk employs some of the rediscovered technologies from the Helm Memory Core. With the use of an extra-light engine two jump jets were added along with the LRM-5 being replaced with an Artemis IV-equipped LRM-10 launcher. The SRM-2 is now a Streak model. Two medium pule lasers replace the original medium laser while a small pulse laser is added for additional anti-infantry support. The GM Whirlwind autocannon is the only weapon that has not been replaced or upgraded and now has a two-ton ammunition bin in anticipation of newer munitions currently under development by several Federated Suns ordnance manufacturers.

SHD-3M2 Shadow Hawk
An alternative design concept to the SHD-3M model chosen for production was the SHD-3M2. Initial tests on a handful of prototypes showed this variant was slightly better at long-range engagement . . . but ran the risk of having the Ultra autocannon jamming in combat. Despite this, the SHD-3M2 was authorized for limited production (approximately 1-in-4 new Shadow Hawks emerging from the factory on Calloway VI are the SHD-3M2 variant).
This variant removes the Imperator Code Red LB-10X autocannon and replaces it (and its two tons of ammunition) with an Imperator Ultra-5 Ultra autocannon. While capable of the same maximum damage as the Code Red, the Ultra-5 has a longer maximum range, although some flexibility is lost with its inability to fire cluster ammunition (and its pronounced tendency to jam at exactly the wrong moment!). With the two remaining tons, the Earthwerks design team decided to install a second Holly LRM-5 launcher mounted in the head; initial concepts did not increase the ammunition allowance, but field tests showed a second ton of LRM munitions was needed. To gain that tonnage, Earthwerks removed one of the two Martell Small Pulse Lasers from the left arm.
Just as cool running as the SHD-3M, the -3M2 promises to be highly effective at long range combat, especially when supporting units mounting NARC missile beacons.

Overview:
While every Draconis unit sought effective lostech upgrades to successfully combat the new Clan threat none had the unique support available to the Sohei. These elite warrior monks outfitted by the Order of Five Pillars (O5P) drew on a vast network whose wealth and connections spanned the entire InnerSphere. This brought them many fine concepts unavailable to traditional DCMS commands which could retrofitted into existing designs like the Shadow Hawk here. Ancient Star League repair facilities on Soul are now working overtime to rush this renovated war machine into production as quickly as possible to meet demand.
Capabilities:
Kurita designers based their initial experiments with remaining SHD-2R in service rather than rely on new high-tech imports from the Free Worlds for this venerable Shadow Hawk.
They did however replace the old 275 Core Tech Fusion Engine with a Nissan 275 XL model which was only half the weight. These lostech power plants produced on Marduk for the Griffin and Wolverine by Victory Industries freed up nearly eight tons for additional weaponry or equipment. Most of this went toward swapping the Armstrong J/11 Autocannon/5 for the newly manufactured Grizzard Model 200 Gauss Rifle. This massive cannon made by LexaTech Industries of Hun Ho can compete with Clan machines because of its long range and heavy hitting power. The Martel Model 5 Medium Laser was upgraded to a Victory Nickel Alloy ER Large which provided additional direct long firepower desired by the Sohei. While this required the complete removal of the missile systems to accomplish it did avoid ammunition explosions from their ordinance making for a hardier design. That and ten tons of advanced Starshield Ferro Fibrous armor improved existing armor protection which was also welcome against the high-powered Clan invaders. Cooling this Shadow Hawk were ten Double Heat Sinks which helped save another two tons from the older dozen single Heat Sinks which were replaced. Two Pitban LFT-50 were also added in order to maximize the jump movement of this Mech increasing its jump radius an additional sixty meters. Even continuous Jumping Alpha Strikes will not produce overheating conditions and thanks to the large engine all of these bulky Double Heat Sinks can be mounted within. Finally, a new C3 Slave unit mounted in the head allowed this BattleMech to coordinate its attacks with its lancemates (and its entire company if so equipped) dramatically improving its overall accuracy.
Deployment:
While only a handful of these BattleMech existed before the Sohei’s baptism by fire during the Raid on Rockland against a vicious Smoke Jaguar opponent more have appeared since. The Sohei in particular were impressed by this variant’s sniper abilities and have sought to incorporate additional units quickly. Rumor has it that the design may soon spread to other Draconis commands on the Clan front.

Overview:
As the 3rd Marik Civil War progressed each side looked to optimize their individual war machines to promote the best possible outcome. Oriente designers decided they could do better with locally produced equipment on hand than the modernized Marik version of the Shadow Hawk dubbed the SHD-5M. Given supply disruption that wracked the Free Worlds League industrial base the need to generate such homegrown products was paramount. Especially given the fact that the neighboring Capellan Confederation was backing a rival claimant to the throne of Atreus. House Halas who was often at odds with House Liao quickly designated this project the SHD-5H after their own Ducal House.
Capabilities:
The 5H draws on improvements made for the 5M like the new Earthwerks SHD II EndoSteel frame and Hermes 275 Extra Light Engine which were both manufactured on Calloway by Earthwerks. However, rather than use the Imperator Ultra-5 Autocannon, which the Marik version does, Oriente designers fitted the Oriente Model O LB-10X Autocannon to the Shadow Hawk along with another ton of Autocannon ammunition. Dropping the head mounted Hovertech Streak SRM2, its ammo, and one CASE made room for the larger Autocannon. Moving all remaining munitions to the right torso allows the new BattleMech to mount a single CASE for maximum safety. Swapping out the massive Doombud Long Missile 20-Rack from the 5M for four Holly Long-Range Missiles 5-Packs, which were featured singularly on the old 2H, saved valuable tonnage in typical modern Free Worlds fashion. To make good for the loss of the SRM-2 this Shadow Hawk adds a second Martell Model 5 Medium Laser to the Left Arm pairing it with the original retained in the Right. Ten Double Heat Sinks allow for the SHD-5H to Alpha Strike and jump one hundred fifty meters with only slight overheating. Mechwarriors are advised to vary their movement from time to time while in battle to avoid any effects which should be minimal in any event. Finally, the design adds a ton of Maximillian 43 plating to produce a near maximum armor protection factor.
Deployment:
Initial production immediately went to the newly returned Langendorf Lancers who continue to field test the 5H as they settle into the defense Calloway VI. The mercenaries have found it to be an excellent design for defeating conventional vehicles and combating inbound aerospace fighters. Often pairing it with fast NARC platforms for increased missile accuracy the Shadow Hawk is currently progressing well through trials. Very soon the Fusiliers of Oriente, the Orloff Grenadiers, and the Oriente Hussars will all field it likely against the Capellan Confederation and their Isis backed forces.
Variants:
Mechwarriors desiring greater short-range pop have replaced two of the LRM-5s and a ton of ammo with two SRM-4s and their corresponding loadout. This semi-modular refit which is becoming increasingly common around the InnerSphere utilizes the identical size and mass of these weapon systems for quick field swaps. While the modification is not yet as rapid as Clan Omni technology substitutions it is gradually laying the ground work for such technical operations.

Here are my Shadow Hawks. I did my fluff like an entry in a TRO.
Overview
The Shadow Hawk is part of the classical trio of 55 tons ‘Mechs, able to deal all kinds of job. However apart from the complete overhaul and upgrade made by the Free Worlds League with the SHD-5M and the retrofit made by the Federated Commonwealth with the SHD-2D2, it never got any real upgrades after the invasion of the Clans.
However, willing to reinforce the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery, the Draconis Combine managed to get almost all the production of Majesty Metals and Manufacturing for themselves instead of the Federated Commonwealth and worked on an upgrade of their classical SHD-2K using the experience acquired from fighting the Clans.
Capabilities
The SHD-5K was designed with one idea in mind : be able to project as much firepower as possible against any Clan targets while being able to fulfil any role.
For this, the weapons were upgraded to an ER PPC, two LRM-5 and one Medium Pulse Laser with the addition of a C3 Slave unit in the Head to make the best of this technology and assist its teammates.
The armour was upgraded to 10 full tons of Ferro-Fibrous with the addition of CASE to protect the torso from ammunition explosions and the Heat Management was improved thanks to the 11 Double Heat Sinks available in the Core Tek 275 Engine.
To avoid the spreading of advanced technologies and make the best of the Combine industrial might, only “simple†advanced technologies were given to Majesty Metal and Manufacturing (like Double Heat Sinks) while the finalisation of the design (ie putting everything advanced) is done in the Draconis Combine. The DCMS can almost custom-tailor its SHD-5K while allowing the Canopian company to focus on the production of a simple design “en masse†(or as much as it can do).
Battle History
The first combat from the SHD-5K was during a raid made by some “rogue†elements of the Free Worlds League that went into Canopian territory with one SHD-5M accompanying them
They faced a provisional Lance made of Kuritan ‘MechWarriors testing the first prototypes of the SHD-5K (for ease and concealment, those ‘Mechs had been fully assembled by Kuritan techs in the Magistracy).
Even if the indirect long range firepower of the SHD-5M was superior to the one deployed by the SHD-5K, the concentrated firepower of the Kuritan ‘Mechs and their capacity to better coordinate their firepower, they managed to wipe out the rogue unit quickly. However in the process, they suffered some damage that due to the lack of available advanced items couldn’t be repaired.
This delayed the final testing by several months but the fire trial gave confidence to the DCMS in this design.
Variants
While things were pretty clear regarding the Shadow Hawk until now, it seems things are going to get more difficult with 3 other variants having reached production status.
Majesty Metals and Manufacturing made a low tech upgrade of the SHD-2H. With 11 Double Heat Sinks, all in the engine, they could reuse the same engine line as for the SHD-5K and the use of locally produced systems (except for the One-Shot SRM-4 imported from the Draconis Combine), they could speed up things. With a PPC, two LRM-5, one Medium Laser, one Machine Gun and its improved jumping capacity and armour, the SHD-5C is a perfect mix of firepower, protection and mobility for as few C-Bills as possible and able to be repaired in the harsh conditions of the Periphery.
Earthwerks Incorporated went two different ways trying to improve their SHD-5M. The SHD-5U (U for Universal) replaces all the weapons for an ER Large Laser, four LRM-5, one SRM-6 and one Medium Laser. This improved flexibility is seen as the way to go for future designs.
The SHD-5Sn focuses exclusively on long-range firepowet with a Gauss Rifle (with 3 tons of ammo) and two LRM-5. Its only secondary weapon is the traditional Medium Laser.
Like the SHD-5C, all components are being manufactured in the Free Worlds League.
Rumours can be found saying that the Draconis Combine went further and created specific SHD-5K1 and 5K2 variants (no real tag name is known for now) that focuses for one on being a team-player (with a Narc system) and for the other on being the coordinator (with a C3 Master). Nothing is known for sure apart that they would use systems mostly made in the Draconis Combine or by trusted suppliers.
Deployment
The new SHD-5K is being deployed replacing the old SHD-2K on the basis of one to one. Further deployment policy is unknown at this time.
Thanks to the opening of a new production line for the SHD-5C and the SHD-5K, its capacity has been doubled and sales to Canopian units or mercenary ones are providing a constant influx of C-Bills to MM&M.
Meanwhile Earthwerks is producing all its three versions as fast as it can and has sent them mostly to the Free Worlds Guards and other units stationed in the Marik Commonwealth.
Notable ‘MechWarriors
Tai-Sa Iraho Tagai is a member of the Sohei unit and their public face. An expert Shadow Hawk ‘MechWarrior, he was given a SHD-5K with the order to “test it until it breaksâ€. So far, it didn’t break.
However, some are saying that his ‘Mech is no ordinary SHD-5K and that he is being used as the test pilot for the newest variants designed by the Draconis Combine. Knowing the ease with which the Sohei can get access to advanced Kuritan technologies, this could be true.
