Bradshaw -- I tooled up an optimized variant of your K2, but fluffed it as a Steiner 'Mech.  I'll try to post it later this week.

As for the K2 you proposed, if it was a Kurita fire support design, wouldn't you find a way to wedge some C3 into that beast?

(The "obvious" method is to strip out one double heat sink, 'cause they're rare in the Combine during this time period, and rely on the Combat Computer quirk to avoid overheating.  Then slap a C3 into the cockpit and away you go)

Era: Age of War/Star League
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/E-F-D-A
Production Year: 3049
Cost: 8,079,875 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,855

Chassis: Titan H1 Standard
Power Plant: Strand 255 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 32.4 km/h
Maximum Speed: 54.0 km/h
Jump Jets: None
    Jump Capacity: 0 meters
Armor: Valiant Lamellor Standard Armor w/ CASE
Armament:
2 Series 7W ER Large Lasers
    2 Mitchell Systems LRM-15s
    4 Magna Medium Lasers
    2 Holly SRM-4s
Manufacturer: Blackwell Heavy Industries
    Primary Factory: Outreach
Communications System: Cronol PR
Targeting and Tracking System: Spar 3c Tight Band

Overview:
Commissioned for the Wolf Dragoons' Zeta Battalion, this refit package began production within days of the first report of the Kell Hounds meeting the Clans on the Rock reached Jaime Wolf.

Capabilities:
The STK-3W is a fairly simple upgrade, with the torso restructured around smaller SRMs and double-heatsinks in order to fit cellular ammunition storage. This allowed an expansion of the arm-mounted LRM launchers with half the SRM ammunition switched to LRMs to keep endurance the same.

Still slow but carrying more protection than ever, this Stalker focuses more on the long range firepower needed to face the Clans. The new heatsinks are sufficient to manage extended range large lasers (the same units found on Blackwell's Falcon) and both LRM racks (taken from the Imp). The loss of four missile tubes at short range is considered more than worthwhile as the new heatsinks allow the Stalker to add one of the large lasers for point-blank fire while moving and suffer no impairment from heat build up.

The only complaint from 'Mechwarriors is that the new cellular missile storage doesn't extend to the missiles carried in the arms. This unfortunately is a limit of the available technology and there is no space in the torso to carry all the missile reloads inside superior storage. By default the launchers will empty the 'on-hand' missiles in each arm, reducing this vulnerability, before drawing on the more secure missiles in the left torso. Mechwarriors can over-ride this if they have specialist munitions loaded.

Battle History:
While Zeta Battalion itself didn't participate in the Battle of Luthien, sufficient kits were available that a few upgraded Stalkers did see action. Operating in a static defense line, a pair of Dragoon Stalkers assigned to Beta Regiment were credited with three kills each against the light 'Mechs of the Nova Cats' 5003rd Harasser Cluster, the Clan Warriors not having anticipated that the defenders would be able to bring such heavy long range firepower to bear.

Deployment:
The Dragoons have refitted all their Stalkers to this standard and since the Outreach conference, kits have been made available to the DCMS and the AFFC. While the FWLM has expressed an interest, the priority for units facing the Clans has meant that no orders have been approved.

It's believed that ComStar has asked to license the design so they can refit and repair their own Stalkers after Tukkayid, but negotiations don't look promising.

STK-5LM STAKLER
Mass: 85 tons
Chassis: Irian Chassis Class 30
Power Plant: Magna 255
Cruising Speed: 32 kph
Maximum Speed: 54 kph
Jump Jets: None
       Jump Capacity: None
Armor: Kallon FWL Special Ferro-Fibrous with CASE
Armament:
12 Irian Weapons Works Class 5 Long-Range Missile Systems
5 Magna Mk II Medium Lasers
       1 Intek Medium Pulse Laser
Manufacturer: Irian BattleMechs Unlimited
       Primary Factory: Shiro
Communications System: Irian E.A.R.
Targeting and Tracking System: Wasat Aggressor

Overview
The lostech STK-5M refit introduced in 3050 by Irian BattleMechs Unlimited left many dissatisfied. The inclusion of the Narc Missile Beacon while well intentioned served this slow-moving assault Mech poorly. Unable to quickly close with opposing forces and properly utilize these short-ranged missile targeting pods made them a nearly pointless design addition. To make matters worse CASEs weren't installed in the BattleMech's side torsos meaning missile reloads, which were increased, are vulnerable to critical strikes. The Clan Invasion also added momentum to fix these issues and maximize performance. The Third Marik Civil War pushed these efforts into overdrive resulting in the introduction of the STK-5LM by the end of 3053.

Capabilities
Using the 5M as a starting point Irian designers built off their new Class 30 chassis which did address any lingering structural issues the original Titan H1 skeletal had. Most of the arsenal was removed along with the standard twenty Heat Sinks and the older Valiant Lamellor armor plating. For its main weaponry a dozen Irian Weapons Works Class 5 Long-Range Missile Systems were chosen to rain fire down on the opposition. This was in keeping with the recent Free Worlds League predilection toward smaller missile racks that aimed to equal the superior technological advantage possessed by the Clans. The combined potential firepower of these twelve launchers is indeed impressive amounting to three LRM-20s at less than twenty percent of the mass. While some site the drawbacks of this practice the savings when combined with the growing FWLM NARC doctrine that teams these fire support units with fast spotters holds a lot of possibilities. Eight tons of ammunition stored in the now CASE protected side torsos permit these missile racks to fire sixteen complete salvos. Thirteen Double Heat Sinks enables the continuous firing of all sixty of its long-range missiles combined with full movement or the 5LM can switch to its close-range battery of supporting lasers. Five Magna Mk II Medium Lasers and an Intek Medium Pulse Laser offer limitless close-range fire for those threats who survive its massive bombardment. Stalker Mechwarriors eagerly embraced this exceptional bracket firing arrangement familiar with the STK-3F’s capabilities. Originally planned to be larger this impressive array of energy weapons had to be scaled back due to a lack of interior space. The extremely cramped interior does make technical work difficult on the new Stalker but the fourteen and a half tons of Kallon FWL Special Ferro-Fibrous provides exceptional protection.

Deployment
While war rages around them Irian Unlimited is thus far attempting to supply every side in the current dispute. This massive corporation spread throughout the League has seen its offices fall into enemy hands or executives with divided loyalties share restricted designs with rebels. New production at Shiro III has been hotly contested by Isis and Andurien forces while Refit Kits have been assembled at a variety of Irian sites. Every side has embraced this ‘Bracket Firing Beast’ into its service without question which is unusual and speaks to its effectiveness. The result has been a rapid proliferation of the new 5LM throughout the Free Worlds and Capellan Confederation during the conflict.

STK-5LS STAKLER

Variant:
While nowhere near a full OmniMech this new Liao-Marik Stalker does display aspects of modularity that allows it to interchange its loadout easier than most current BattleMechs despite its cramped interior. A second slightly mobile version, the 5LS, with greater shorter-range firepower has also been made available by Irian. Swapping three Large Lasers in the same energy weapon bays and eight SRM-4s in the same racks has made this version more of a close-range brawler. Two jump jets allow it some limited agility in urban environments where it can be truly terrifying. With almost nineteen rounds of ammunition, it can deliver more damage than any Stalker currently known to exist. Again Mechwarriors are advised to bracket fire this formidable arsenal.

Lyrans love big guns, and the Stalker is a big enough ‘Mech to really manage a decent Gauss-Zilla build.  That basically meant that this had to be a Defiance Industries build, given the limited number of alternative manufacturers for such a Stalker design in 3053.

Type: STK-6S Stalker
Production: Federated Commonwealth (Defiance Industries, Furillo)
Combat Value: 2249 BV
Total Cost: 15,970,125 C-Bills (including x1.85 tonnage premium)

Internal Struc: Endo: 4.5t
Engine: VOX 255 XL: 6.5t
  Walking: 3
  Running: 5
Heat Sinks: 10 single: 0t
Gyro/Cockpit (std): 6t
Armor Factor (std): 16t (256 pips)

Head: 3/9
Center Torso: 27/42/11
R/L Torso: 18/28/8
R/L Arm: 14/28
R/L Leg: 18/33

Quirks: Ubiquitous, No/Minimal Arms, Arms Flip

3x Gauss Rifles (21cr, 45t) RA/RT/LA
6x Ammo (Gauss) 48 (6cr, 6t) RT/LT
1x Medium Laser (1cr, 1t) CT

Trellshire Heavy Industries was formerly one of the major armaments firms in the Lyran Commonwealth, with major facilities on Chahar, Twycross, and Sudeten.  Then the Clan Invasion occurred.  Trellshire increased production of their signature Stalker, Battlemaster, and Rifleman lines, and pushed out a hastily upgraded Stalker (the STK-5S), which was universally panned as both more fragile and inferior to the original 3F design, particularly against the long-ranged, speedy Clan opponents.

Twycross fell to Clan Jade Falcon, but was won back through the heroics of Kai Allard Liao in November of 3050.  Given how fragile their position was on the front lines of the Clan Invasion, CEO Duchess Yvonne Killa began dismantling and evacuating the Twycross production lines to a satellite facility on Adelaide.  The efforts proved prescient, as Twycross was ultimately lost to the Steel Vipers’ Gamma Galaxy just a year later, in November of 3051.  By that point, however, Trellshire had moved nearly all of their ‘Mech production lines well behind the Clan front, although they were forced to license out their extra-light fusion engine design, as well as the Stalker specs overall, to Defiance Industries in order to fund the move.

Defiance had already been working on a number of competing product lines, and saw an opportunity to use their new license as a testbed for some of their latest technologies.  The VOX 255 extra-light engines were retained (and were, in fact, also used to power the 85-ton Gunslinger, developed in cooperation with the Draconis Combine), and combined with another weight-saving technology: Chariot Type IV Endo-Steel framing, newly prototyped on Hesperus II.  The single heat sinks of the 5S were retained, as was the standard armor, but with a full sixteen tons of Valiant Lamellor providing near-maximum armored protection.  However, in place of the legendary Spar 3c Tight Band targeting system, Defiance simply substituted in TharHes-branded comms and targeting gear.

Recognizing that the AFFC would not be interested in a slow, fragile, close-range brawler design (which is what Trellshire’s 5S variant effectively was), Defiance engineering teams did a complete overhaul of the Stalker’s weapons systems.  Feeding the new interest in the tremendous fire-support capabilities of Gauss Rifles (particularly in the former Lyran half of the Commonwealth), and taking advantage of the incredible weight-savings offered by their use of a VOX 255 extra-light fusion engine in their upgraded Stalker, Defiance squeezed in no less than three Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifles – one more than carried by their own 85-ton offering, the Gunslinger, which released to modest public interest in 3053.  Six tons of ammunition provides just enough firepower for a standard engagement, abut does handcuff this updated STK-5SG to its supply lines, and a sole Defiance B3M medium laser provides some backup firepower at close ranges, or if the Stalker runs out of ammunition.

Although an obvious cash-grab, Defiance has already seen impressive levels of interest in the design, and has (ironically enough) been in discussions with both Trellshire, their license holder, and with Gunslinger ‘Mech partners Independence Weaponry, about potentially expanding production of this Stalker line.  Indeed, Defiance appears to be working on an in-house assault ‘Mech they hope will garner even greater interest, and accordingly has shifted Stalker production to their secondary facility on Furillo.

Very nice fabulousorcboy! Here is my direct fire Stalker which is close to Bradshaw's. How do you think it compares?

STK-4S STALKER
Mass: 85 tons
Chassis: Titan H1
Power Plant: Strand 255
Cruising Speed: 32 kph
Maximum Speed: 54 kph
Jump Jets: None
       Jump Capacity: None
Armor: Valiant Lamellor Ferro-Fibrous with CASE
Armament:
       2 Armstrong Class-B ClusterGun
       2 Donal Particle Projection Cannons
Manufacturer: Robinson Standard BattleWorks
       Primary Factory: Robinson (refits only)
Communications System: Cronol PR
Targeting and Tracking System: Spar 3C Tight Band

Overview
The introduction of the new STK-5FC Stalker did not please everyone in the Federated Commonwealth. Many Mechwarriors refused to see their ancestral war machines turned into glorified artillery walkers and strenuously objected to the upgrade. These displeased pilots found willing allies in Duke James Sandoval of Robinson and Duke Ryan Steiner of Porrima. While both men have little love of each other they did share the common desire to better defend their native Marches. To this end they combined their resources to produce an direct fire alternative to their sovereigns rear line solution. Inspired by the new MAD-4S Marauder variant from Solaris with its three main gun armament they aimed to develop a four-gun Stalker. Their efforts quickly paid dividends as designers were able to come up with the STK-4S in a relatively short amount of time.

Capabilities
Removing all of the old weaponry, heat sinks, and armor from the old Stalker left engineers with vast amounts of space in order to incorporate the four main gun directive. Unfortunately, two Gauss Rifles proved too large and new ER PPCs too hot operationally but there were other choices available. Shifting their focus to the new LB 10-X Autocannons and the older but still combat effective PPC technicians soon found their solution. Both weapons possessed an effective range of five hundred and forty meters (18 hexes) along with solid striking power. With only moderate heat buildup which could be fully neutralized by thirteen Double Heat Sinks the choice was clear. Thankfully Duke Sandoval was able to contract with nearby Bander BattleMechs in order to obtain the new Armstrong Class-B ClusterGuns. The older Donal PPCs proved easy to obtain with so many discarded in favor of lostech upgrades making the refit possible. Thirteen and a half tons of Valiant Lamellor Ferro-Fibrous completed the redesign along with a CASE which safeguards the forty rounds of autocannon ammunition. These defensive improvements have resulted in a ten percent improvement in maximum armor protection from the 3F along with a noticeable boost in pilot and machine safety. With a one million three hundred thousand C-bill price tag over the 3F this retrofit is pretty reasonable as well.

Deployment
Rapidly proliferating through the Draconis and Skye Marches the new STK-4S debuted just after the 5FC. Ironically appealing to both Lyran and Davion traditionalists it appeals to a certain old school mindset from both nations. First Prince Hanse Davion and Archon Melissa Steiner grudgingly gave their blessing to any Stalker Mechwarrior in the Federated Commonwealth who owned their war machine outright to upgrade to the 4S. Refusing to mandate to their ‘Artillery Mech’ has lessened its numbers somewhat leading to some discussion of possible new production. Certain mercenary units have also made inquiries about the refit process with both Dukes and offers are currently being made.

Overview
The Stalker, one of the most common Assault ‘Mechs in the whole Inner Sphere, was in need of a complete retrofit to either bring it up to modern standards or to make it live longer in the modern era.
Seeing this as a perfect opportunity to bring more ‘MechWarriors on Canopus and to get themselves a reputation before launching other upgrades or new designs, Majesty Metal Manufacturing decided to sell a retrofit of the Stalker and received funds from the Magestrix to develop their ideas further.
This is how the STK-3MC was born.

Capabilities
The first obvious task was to improve the cooling system thanks to the use of 15 Double Heat Sinks  that would allow for heavier weapons to be used.
And thanks to the good relations between the Magistracy and the Draconis Combine, this heavier firepower came with two Lord’s Light PPC, so common in the Kuritan sphere of influence. These two energy weapons replaced both the traditional Large Lasers and the LRM-10.
To deal with opponents trying to get within the minimal range of the PPC, the 4 Medium Lasers that could be found in the original Stalker were kept and 4 SRM-6 from Andurien were added together with 4 tons of ammo. This ensured that the Stalker would stay for long periods of time on the battlefield.
To further add to the extra protection provided by the CASE shielding the ammo bins, 14.5 tons of armour were added.

Both the different disposal of the weapons and the extra reinforcement of the armour ensured less stress on the internal structure, a common problem that had plagued numerous Stalkers over the centuries.

The STK-3MC is still slow and can’t alpha strike but its efficiency in all compartments had been improved and after several tests, the Magistracy Armed Forces requested all their Stalkers to be converted to this new standards, initiating a steady flow (for the Periphery that is) of private Stalkers going to the Majesty Metal Manufacturing plant on Canopus to receive this retrofit.

Battle History
Potnia Theron is a Canopian ‘Mech that defended alone a village targeted by pirates. Thanks to the heavy armour of this Stalker, it remained between the target and the raiders keeping on firing on them and forcing them to try to face it at closer ranges where their numbers would represent an advantage.
However the extra punch provided by the Medium Laser and the SRM-6 allowed its unknown pilot to deal with a few shots with every opponent trying to get too close until the pirates decided they had enough and retreated.
For her bravery (assuming the pilot is a she), she was given by Emma Centrella one of the first Iokheira.

Variants
The STK-3MC Iokheira or “showered by arrows” is a STK-3MC that has recently began to appear among the forces surrounding Isis Marik (showing that perhaps the real mind behind the STK-MC is Isis’ husband and therefore the Capellan Confederation). Our best analysis shows that their SRM-6 has been replaced by 12 Streak SRM-2 originating from the Free Worlds League and a Guardian ECM Suite and Ferro-Fibrous Armour from the Capellan Confederation. They are being assembled on Canopus and given to selected ‘MechWarriors, hand-picked by Isis Marik, perhaps as a reward or because of the slow upgrade capacity of Majesty Metals and Manufacturing.

Deployment
Majesty Metals and Manufacturing is busy upgrading as many Stalkers as they can get their hands on but so far progresses have been slow. It is rumoured that a treaty between Isis Marik and Emma Centrella is about to be signed and that a company within the Capellan Confederation could receive the production rights for the two new Stalkers, increasing its availability.

Notable ‘MechWarriors
The Amnisiades are female ‘MechWarriors originating from the Magistracy of Canopus, the Capellan Confederation and the Free Worlds League and acting as battlefield bodyguards for Isis Marik. They are being given STK-3MC Iokheira, all named from ancient goddesses of Earth.

Re: Optimizing the Stalker

When a mid-sized firm is forced to down-size, like Trellshire when moving out of the Clan Invasion corridor, what would make sense for them to do, in order to stay afloat?  My thought was partnership with another mid-sized firm, giving both companies a chance to make a play for market share against some of the big fish in the weapons industry – like Defiance, in this case.  And with the right combination of components, you can get a really viable fire-support design out of the Stalker.  I tweaked both of my designs below, based on Bradshaw’s proposals earlier in the thread.

Type: STK-5S2/5S3 Stalker
Production: Federated Commonwealth (Trellshire Heavy Industries, Adelaide)
Combat Value: 2113 BV (5S2), 2273 (5S3)
Total Cost: 8,755,125 C-Bills (5S2), 8,100,225 C-Bills (5S3)

Internal Struc: Endo: 4.5t
Engine: Strand 255: 13t
  Walking: 3
  Running: 5
Heat Sinks 10(20): 0t
Gyro/Cockpit (std): 6t
Armor Factor (Std): 16.5t (263 pips-max)

Head 3/9
Center Torso 27/42/12
R/L Torso 18/28/8
R/L Arm 14/28
R/L Leg 18/36

Quirks: Combat Computer, Ubiquitous, No/Minimal Arms, Arms Flip

WEAPONS INVENTORY (5S2)
4x LRM-15 + Artemis (16cr, 32t) RA/RT/LT/LA
8x Ammo (LRM) 64 (8cr, 8t) RT/LT
2x CASE (2cr, 1t) RT/LT
4x Medium Lasers (4cr, 4t) 2RA/2LA

WEAPONS INVENTORY (5S3)
2x Gauss Rifles (14cr, 30t) RA/LA
4x Ammo (Gauss) 32 (4cr, 4t) RT/LT
2x ER Large Lasers (4cr, 10t) RT/LT
+1 Double Heat Sink (3cr, 1t) RT

By that point, however, Trellshire had moved nearly all of their ‘Mech production lines well behind the Clan front, although they were forced to license out their extra-light fusion engine design, as well as the Stalker specs overall, to Defiance Industries (who continues to expand and further dominate the Commonwealth arms market) in order to fund the move.  Happily for Trellshire, they were able to enter a partnership with TharHes Industries, taking advantage of the equipment manufacturer’s cutting-edge products in order to redesign their ‘Mech lines, while showcasing the latest in arms technology.

Unable to mass-produce the massive and expensive VOX 255 extra-light engine at their Adelaide facility, Trellshire ‘downgraded’ their Stalker to a classic Strand 255, which also gave their ‘Mechs considerably greater durability on the battlefield.  Although fusion engine manufacture is slow, they have been able to acquire additional engines from StarCorps Industries to fill their production gap.  The partnership with TharHes allowed Trellshire to incorporate double-strength “freezers” as standard in their new Strand engine blocks, making it possible to strip out older heat sinks and save weight for armaments.  A TharHes Calliope ZE-2 comms system replaces the antiquated Succession Wars era Garett T11-A of the Trellshire STK-3F, but Trellshire made certain that they could manufacture new Spar 3c Tight Band targeting systems, which famously incorporates a sophisticated fire-control system that optimizes fire rates to take advantage of the ‘Mech’s heat sinks.

These core elements of the new Stalker are relatively modest changes compared to the incorporation of TharHes 1A Type 17 Endo Steel, a reinforced variant of a Star League-era endo-steel composite initially used in Phoenix Hawks (and revived by Achernar Battlemechs in 3048).  The Type 17 chassis is essentially a production prototype, as TharHes investigates the viability of producing more Endo-Steel components, effectively undergoing field tests in the new Stalker designs – thus far, they appear to be holding up under combat conditions.  The ‘Mech is also slathered in sixteen-and-a-half full tons of Trellshire Royalstar-brand standard ‘Mech armor, providing the maximum effective protection for the 85-ton ‘Mech.

Trellshire’s new Stalkers, technically marketed as a variant of their STK-5S despite the considerable changes made to the core design, were released in late 3053 with two weapons packages.  The first, the 5S2, is a pure fire-support vehicle intended to provide long-range support even against Clan foes.  It carries four TharHes Reacher 15 LRMs with TharHes Fire Control Artemis systems, spread across the arms and torsos of the ‘Mech, and eight tons of missiles protected by Durallex CASE.  Four Magna Mk II Medium Lasers, in the familiar arm-mounts, add some close-combat bite.  It is clear competition for StarCorps Industries’ Longbow, which has the same weight and ground speed, but inferior throw-weight with just 50 non-Artemis tubes (indeed, the success of the 5S3 ultimately persuades StarCorps to start upgrading their venerable Longbow lines by the late 3050s).

The second, the 5S3, is a direct-fire support unit, with paired Poland Main Model A Gauss Rifles (also produced by TharHes for their Falconer design) in the arms, fed by four tons of ammunition, and a pair of Cyclops XII ER Large Lasers (produced by TharHes for their Wolfhound design) in the torsos.  This variant does not include CASE, but instead has and additional double heat sink fitted to the right torso of the ‘Mech to help mitigate the ferocious heat spikes of the Cyclops XII, especially if fired in tandem.

Both Stalker variants have proved to be popular with Combine and Commonwealth procurement officials, and Trellshire is struggling to keep up with demand, with orders of both designs already backed up to 3056 or later based on currently manufacturing capacity.  They are already in talks with TharHes about potentially developing a Ferro-Fibrous production capability, in order to further improve their ‘Mech designs, and also to attempt to regain some of their corporate footprint in the arms industry.

Ice Hellion -- are your Stalker designs intentionally 80 ton 'Mechs, instead of the standard 85 tons?  Just asking because the fluff suggests that they are relatively easy to produce as 75t heavy 'Mechs (and I proposed one such design in the Marauder contest), so an 80-ton variant isn't all that weird in canon.

Oops. Mistake from my side. I will see if I can change them.

Thanks for spotting that.
