Is EndoSteel like regular steel where you create a bunch of beams and then sold to others who then create frames out of it or is it made specific to a frame in some odd type of process. I always wondered.

Endo Steel is a material- just like regular steel, titanium, aluminum, etc.

Objective Raids (p. 170) actually describes the process of manufacturing the Internal Structure of a Marauder II at the GM/Blackwell plant.
Step 1: foamed aluminium is forced into molds and forms the core of the mech's "bones"
Step 2: the cores are wrapped in Silicone Carbide Monofilament
Step 3: They are encased in a Titanium Steel Shell

I would assume it is the same using endo steel- just the Endo Steel replaced one or more of the materials used.

Wow, more from Irose and drakensis. I like the concepts guys and was just waiting for a Gauss entry aka a mobile defense turret, LMAO!!

I thought about a gauss variant for the LC half of the FC but I could not make it work without Endosteel.

Yeah, as I was saying bud, just waiting on someone to do it as my schedule is way too busy to complete a third such Urbie but I was going with a Lyran EndoSteel model too. I was thinking along the lines of a proof of concept design by the Hollander design team which if they could make that work then their model would even be better. Although I was going to speak of a recoil problem after the Thumper fluff fluff you wrote. ;)

I thought EndoSteel required an Orbital Foundry in order to facilitate its production??

My design was almost identical to Drakensis except I had 6 tons of armor and no case.

FYI the Gauss Rifle should have no recoil - it uses magnets to accelerate the projectile- not a chemical propellant that would generate recoil.

It does, what is not clear is does it just need an orbital facility to manufacture the materials (which can then be processed into mech bones elsewhere) or does the entire process need to be done in orbit.  In either case the steps to produce the "bones" is probably fairly similar.

Yeah thats the reason of my question. Does Endo Steel come in pre-made molds for each Mech or were individual facilities able to alter the original material to fit whatever design they wanted.[quote

I reasoned that orbital foundries were key in the fabrication of EndoSteel and that these fragile spaceborne facilities were easy targets during the Succession Wars hence its extinction. I grant you that other components went extinct at this time and were not in any way connected to space industry.

Yeah but come on Endo Steel was around in the late 2400s you telling me the Houses got blasted back to pre Terran Hegemony tech. Ridiculous there were to many planets untouched throughout the SW. I love BT but there is too many cases like this that never made sense.

Overview
What is a planned economy? What are its cons and pros?
Whereas some would link it to some states that “died” a long time ago on Earth, a perfect example is right under our eyes: the Capellan Confederation and we can see there both the advantages and disadvantages of such a system.
This state has always displayed for several reasons a strong tendency to decide how investment or production took place, going as far as to decide how much and which capital goods had to be produced. Among the reasons that will be expanded upon later in this book (see chapter 4.2 Adaptation of states to economic problems), you can find a deep recession following the Reunification Wars, a lack of heavy industrial basis after the first Succession Wars, the need to focus every available resources on defence matters, the might of House Liao…

Sometimes the results were completely incoherent (just see the old nail joke in House Liao Book, published by ComStar Archives in 3024) but sometimes the process had interesting results, such as the creation of the Vindicator or of the new UrbanMech at the end of the 3040s-beginning of the 3050s.

The Capellan Confederation had been nearly destroyed by the 4th Succession War and even if the Andurien Crisis showed the mettle of the Capellan Confederation Armed Forces, the War of 3039 showed also that the Capellan Confederation could not stand against the might of the former Armed Forces of the Federated Suns.
One of the biggest results (even if It still is carefully hidden from the Capellans themselves) was the complete disorganisation of the production on several worlds, among them Grand Base or Betelgeuse, where state-of-the-art Cataphracts were produced.
To allow for a quick recovery, Romano Liao ordered that all units were to be stripped of any advanced items that could be used on the production of this Heavy ‘Mech, going as far as diverting whole production runs fresh from the factory. This complex move resulted in lots of units of the CCAF being left without real advanced weapons in case of an attack.

This is when Hellespont Industrials came to see Chancelor Romano Liao, giving her willingly the LB 10-X used in the UrbanMech in exchange for “considering favourably the reopening of the Betelgeuse factory”, which had been closed after the Andurien Crisis while agreeing to provide the Capellan Confederation with a better and improved ‘Mech.
According to some unofficial papers released well after that time, Alana Morgain, the CEO, knew that she was playing a dangerous game with her head being on the forefront but she had a clever trick in her sleeve.

From Economy and the State, an introduction by NAIS Press Limited, 3060 – Textbook for the NAIS College of Finance

Capabilities
From afar, the UM-R63L looks exactly like a classical UrbanMech: a box with legs. However, appearances can be misleading as this new version is fully upgraded, even if some of the solutions used just show how desperate the Capellan Confederation was at that time.
For example, the speed was increased by 50% thanks to the use of a DAV 90 instead of the usual Leenex 60. However, since there was no clear military production for this DAV engines, one can only assume that they were taken from civilian buildings, stripping them of energy for the good of the Confederation. One can only imagine the sacrifices made by these civilians for the survival of House Liao (or so they were likely told). A third JumpJet was added to improve the mobility of the UrbanMech in cities.

While reconditioning the DAV engines (as explained in the class on Fusion Engines of 3rd semester, to bring a civilian engine up to military standards, some small and rather basic changes are needed to improve the stability of the energy output)), Hellespont Industrials exchanged the internal Heat Sinks for Double ones, improving the overall efficiency of the cooling system by more than 80% while freeing one ton for something else.

The selection of weapons while perfect for urban settings and against small threads (the core of the day-to-day business for an UrbanMech) are more limited in terms of range, which in most cities shouldn’t be a problem. A Large Pulse Laser is at the core of its firepower supported by a Medium Pulse one to deal with infantry and a standard Medium Laser to give it more range against most targets. All these weapons are left-overs either of former production sites (the Medium Lasers coming from Kajuka Aerospace Division, which found in this deal with Hellespont Industries a way to drop their supplies of Lasers after the loss of all the production sites of the Cheetah) or from projects without a market (like the Large Pulse Laser produced by Saroyan Special Projects on Sian).

To help deal with the specifications of fighting in the specific environment that is a city, two tried and trusted systems were added. The willingness to use a Guardian ECM and a Beagle Active Probe by Hellespont Industries can be traced back to their successful use on the Raven, a hit of the Sian based company. Both systems are predicted to provide an edge in urban settings and against all kinds of enemies by at the same time shielding the UrbanMech from hostile electronic devices and allowing it to detect hidden opponents.
To make room for these two systems, Hellespont Industries had to use their own Ferro-Fibrous Armour to free some weight while lightly improving the protection.

From UrbanMechs, folly or efficient tools?, a 3060 mid-term paper from the NAIS College of Engineering published in Collection of papers from the class of 3061 – NAIS Press Limited, 3062

Battle History
In spite of what one might think, being assigned to the borders between the Periphery and an Inner Sphere power has never been troublesome. Take Kincade's Rangers during their time there, they had to deal with rebels, dissidents, pirates… but no fight was harder than the raid of Renow where their 2nd Battalion had to deal with a traitorous attack by rogue elements from the Magistracy Armed Forces trying to get back their commanding officer that had been seduced by the scion of a Capellan family.
With a single Lance of UR-630L supported by armour and infantry, the brave Kincade’s Rangers managed to play hide and seek among the buildings of the local town, engaging the heavier enemy unit with precise fire before getting back in the shadows, leaving untouched the buidlings.

From the script of the Golden Scorpion, an episode of the CCAF best of the best, show ran by the Capellan Broadcast Services in 3053

This is obviously a romanticized version of what happened on Renow. Kincade’s Rangers had to repel a reconnaissance in force by elements of the Magistracy of Canopus Armed Forces and civilians like the buildings suffered from the fight in the few towns of Renow.
I would recommend using footages of the fight at Fort Lyons on Carver V. Even if the fight was against a Marik unit and the ‘Mechs displayed by the then Capellan forces were classical UM-R60, Lothar’s Fusilliers shots were more precise. However because of their unacceptable act in the 4th Succession War, I would recommend taking only footages where the Capellan forces can’t be identified.

From the report of the Chancellor’s Voice on the Golden Scorpion episode of the CCAF best of the best

Variants
There was only an experimental variant of the new UrbanMech, one that managed to increase the firepower of the UR-630L through the use of a Binary Laser Canon and of a Small Pulse Laser. In spite of the extra range and damage done, the lack of precision of this weapon made the UR-631L something of a dead end, even if some might be used shall the Capellan Confederation be in grave danger.

From UrbanMechs, folly or efficient tools?, a 3060 mid-term paper from the NAIS College of Engineering published in Collection of papers from the class of 3061 – NAIS Press Limited, 3062

Deployment
The best part of the UM-R630L is that all these changes can be done during a regular maintenance trip with no need for a complex factory retrofit. The only limitation to the number of UM-R630L being deployed is the capacity to find DAV 90 engines.

REPOST JUST TO PUT THEM INTO SOME TYPE OF ORDER

A simple field refit of the commonly seen UM-R63, the R63A drops one of its heat sinks and its infantry support weaponry of a small pulse laser and small laser for twin medium lasers and a CASE system to protect its pilots.

As advanced technologies have started to arrive from the Chancellor's future in-laws in the FWL some of the weaponry is rapidly being distributed to any Mechs that Liao commanders can. A design that can be seen in front line forces as well as provisional ones the Urbanmech is one that most realms would neglect but due to limitations in their available forces is getting many upgrades. Seen as a vital design for urban defenses the UM-R62 is departure from its brethren and is outfitted with the advances of pulse technologies, a weapon that has its flaws in ranged combat but can excel in the city settings the UrbanMech is known to excel in.

With the single largest number of Urbanmechs outside the Capellan Confederation the Capellan March of the Federated Commonwealth has refitted a number of their captured designs with a battery of SRM-4 launchers. Utilizing little in the way of advanced technologies the FC variant takes advantage of being one of the first to rediscover double heat sinks as well as utilizing the Guardian ECM system against the forces that first rediscovered the technology themselves. Quite often pilots will use one of their tons of ammo for Inferno rounds as the hatred for their Capellan enemies often causes intensive incidental damage on raids on Capellan worlds.

UrbanMech UR-D02

Another variant from the Federated Suns again removing the traditional autocannon from the design. This one though maintains is damage output with its choice of weaponry and in fact doubles it. With a twin PPC design. Outfitted with an additional ternary of small lasers for short range and infantry suppression. Quite popular with what pilots are assigned the Mechs the design is able to surprise many opponents the first time they face the variant with its firepower. Utilizing Ferro Fibrous armor to offset the drop of one ton of armor which is only slight decrease in total protection and Double Heat Sinks to assist with the massive increase in heat issues caused from the new energy weapon variant.

A variant found in the Free Worlds League and heavily influenced by the Hunchback HBK-4P, this variant mounts an impressive 8 Medium Lasers equating to twin AC/20s on the design. Equipped with the new Guardian ECM to assist the design in covertly approach enemy units as the design maintains the snail pace 32 kmh top speed. Adding a TAG system which some may consider odd but this allows the design to call in accurate artillery strikes in urban settings which usually is rare due to the normally high chances of collateral damages on strikes without said guidance. This design in its urban setting is able to tackle even heavy Mechs if able to strike first.

Production Variants

Produced by Hellespont Industrials and funded exclusively by the FWL this production line utilizes the DAV 90 Fusion Engine, an engine that typically was used for powering military and hardened civilian buildings. Giving the Urbanmech a slightly more respectful 54 kph top speed and allowed for the design to increase its jump radius by an additional 30 meters. Using advanced technologies with its Double Heat Sinks, Pulse Lasers and Beagle Active probe the 70M variant is a superb urban defender.

Utilizing the same DAV 90 fusion engine that Hellespont Industries secured the licensing for in the FWL deal the 70L variant is an infantryman's worst nightmare. Designed as a Mech to assist with the FCs overwhelming infantry advantage in their RCT regiments. The design has a decent punch for its weight vs armored foes with its twin Medium Lasers but it really shines when it engages in infantry and IFVs. With 6 MGs, 3 flamers and twin small lasers this Mech can lay waste to multiple platoons in rapid order. In the instances infantry is supported by SRM2 heavy ordinance the design is outfitted with an Anti-Missile system to shoot down enemy fire.

A variant designed and sold to the Draconis Combine, the 70K is an unique design. Taking a technology that the DCMS has used with good effect the 70K uses the Dragon's Breath flamers that have been used creatively for years by them. Some have affectionately called the design the Otōto, as the design acts as the little brother to its heavier lance mates. Following behind and using its liquid nitrogen flamers to cool down its bigger brothers. But to over look its damage output is foolhardy with its twin Medium Lasers and SRM4s it can cool down its lance mates and still exploit holes in opposing forces while doing so.

Purchasing the licensing rights from Hellespont, Earthwerks has jumped into the production of the UrbanMech. Utilizing their mass produced GM 120 engine to bolster its speeds as the design is  similar in concept to the new 70L variant. This is Earthwerks first exploration into the design and has gone for an all energy battery of a staggering 18 small lasers, backed by a single flamer. While not the longest of ranges for its weaponry the design in an urban setting when many battles are fought in extremely tight corridors the design could theoretically destroy many small and potentially medium Mechs within a barrage or two.

Attempting to take the Urbanmech out of its comfort zone of the city setting, Earthwerks has outfitted their variant with their very reliable GM 150 engine, which is being purchased from the FWL who are rumored to be unveiling a new Mech themselves in the near future utilizing the same engine. Nearly tripling the speed of the UrbanMech to 86 kph, the EW2 is able to bounce around the battlefield and tear apart its foes with the extremely accurate Large Pulse Laser and exploit any openings with its SRM 4 Launcher giving the design an entire new persona.

A design more famous for its court cases than its actual production the 70D variant has its routes in Davion claims that the last living legal holder of the Orguss Industries Urbanmech production rights sold said rights to Corean Enterprises in 3042. Tied up in courts for nearly 10 years Corean continued to build the facilities on New Avalon as the case was being played out. Ultimately the case was dismissed as there wasn't enough evidence to disclaim the Corean claims. The production of the Davion facility quickly started it assembly lines and began pumping out the design to City Defense Forces across the Federated Commonwealth, primarily used across the Outback which has been stripped of many of its primary defense forces to deal with the Clan invasion. Armed with an exclusively battery of energy weapons. It mounts twin Medium Lasers in each arm with a quad battery of small lasers in corresponding torsos.

Straight outta Connaught. This Free Worlds refit comes complete with a brand Binary Laser Cannon and not much else. The sole back-up weapon is a medium laser and the fourteen single heat sinks are not enough to keep it cool. A couple of quick shots and heat becomes a serious issue. The refit team was not able to get access any more advanced components or even engine upgrade. An ultra-cheap alternative to ammo-dependent AC/10 or AC/20 models.

I found this at another site I posted at sometime ago.

The two I lost when my computer featured a standard mover with an Ultra AC/5 and pulsers as back. The second moved 4/6/4 with twin ER Larges 10 DHS and an ECM. IIRC.

The Blazer just makes so much sense here. Nice job Ice!
As the poster Daryk at the CBT site would say, "The Blazer Always Make Sense." Or words to that effect.

Daryk is right especially here. Glad you got a design in Abele before the deadline. Did you see my post asking for your comments on UrbanMechs posted here? Specifically I wanted to ask you about what you felt was their speed maximum. I slowed my ComStar design down because of your dislike for a 6/9/6 Urbie posted previously. I'd love to hear what everyone thought was proper regarding speed for the UrbanMech here and why.

My fluff is going up momentarily (done now!) - please comment if you wish. Love feedback!

Less than six hours remaining in this contest!!

Personally I think an urbanmech should move between 2/3 and 4/6. Any faster and I have to question why you even bothered with an urbanmech rather then another 30 tonner.

One of the problems I have is making mechs unique. If you increase the speed of an urbanmech to 6/9/6 isn’t that just a funny looking javelin?
