Overview:
A prototype next-generation Atlas developed by Yori 'Mech Works for the DCMS in the mid-3060s, the AS8-K would never enter production due to the Jihad. A few prototypes were made and these were lost during the fighting on and around Al Na'ir.
Capabilities:
Broadly following the classic AS7-D layout, the Atlas mounts a pair of dissimilar missile weapons in it's left side and the main gun - in this case a Heavy PPC - on the right. The missile launchers are an artemis-guided LRM launcher, complimenting the PPC at long range, and a Streak SRM-6 for finishing off damaged targets.
In each arm, a Diverse Optics Type 30 large laser provides good mid-range firepower. If all ammunition is expended, the three energy weapons still leave the Atlas more than capable of holding its own on the battlefield.
As a result of the huge Vlar Extra-Light reactor and the triple strength myomers, the Atlas AS8-K can keep pace even with many fast cavalry designs. While it has all the protection of its predecessors, there are a large number of vulnerable internal systems that can be knocked out if the armour is penetrated. Wise commanders therefore commit the Atlas at critical junctures and withdraw them for repairs if damage mounts up.
Deployment:
The exact number of prototypes is unclear but at least four are known to have existed and none are confirmed as having been destroyed beyond repair. It's assumed that they are most likely in mercenary hands as two were spotted on Galatea in 3074, although they didn't have any visible markings. A third - or possibly one of the above two - won three Class-5 bouts on Solaris VII the following year.
