There was a timeline document for Mech designs I will try to locate now.

Well here it is. Let me blow the dust off of this file which is dated 1998. Almost an antique!

Please keep in mind that there is a lot more information out there now but this ain't too shabby, enjoy this blast from the past.

The History of BattleMechs

Well, I've been meaning to do this for a LONG time, and now that school's out for the moment I finally got up the nerve to sit down and work out the evolution of the BattleMech. This all started when I got the 3058 TR and noticed inconsistencies with various dates in the technical readouts. What tipped me off was the realization that the Mackie was produced in 2439. I remembered that the Zeus has been produced in 2411. Clearly, the Zeus could not have existed before the Mackie. As I looked through the 3058 TR, I found more inconsistencies. For example, the Emperor, which is listed as a contemporary of the Banshee and Striker, had an XL engine, double heat sinks, LB 10-Xs and pulse lasers--all this a mere 63 years after the first BattleMech had been made. It seemed inconceivable to me that the Emperor could be so advanced, especially when it was mentioned in the same breath as the Banshee. Obviously, the ComStar records had been muddled up.
The following, then, is an attempt to reconcile some of those irregularities in the history of BattleMech development. In addition to plotting out a type of pecking order, I was interested in seeing what types of technologies were introduced during what time periods. As you can guess, the results were somewhat confusing.
The major types of inconsistencies I found were:
* Dates that made no logical sense or contradicted certain source materials (re: the    Mackie/Zeus problem)
* Technology introduced at a date that was not consistent with other 'Mechs produced at    that time (re: the Emperor/Banshee)
* 'Mechs designated as Star League designs that were first produced before the Star League had even formed (circa 2571)
There are some obvious reasons for these problems. First of all, the 3025 TR was written before most of the background history for BattleTech had been "nailed down", so to speak. Second, most of this information comes from the "fluff text" that has no purpose or meaning within the actual game rules, and is most frequently written by writers who do not have the sickening disease that causes most rabid BTech players memorize gobloads of meaningless made-up history and source material on the BTech Universe. The most likely explanation as far as the game mechanics are concerned is that ComStar has its records screwed up... a likely problem when some of the records are a good 400-500 years old.
At any rate, the following is a list of the major BattleMechs and the years they began production, with notes on new technology and other breakthroughs. I've stuck in some historical dates as reference points. By no means is this list complete or entirely accurate. Some dates could only be estimated, and many BattleMechs did not have a production date listed. Errors and inconsistencies have been marked with a '*', and in a couple of cases I have changed dates that did not make any sense.

        *  = Inconsistency, error, or lack of data.
?? = No exact date possible from available data

In the beginning...
The first BattleMech ever mass-produced was the Mackie in 2439. I have heard
some rumors that there was an earlier prototype that was never mass-produced and weighed in at 50 tons, but I've never seen any evidence of this. Although the 3025 TR says that the Zeus began production in 2411, I have reason to believe this is either an error on ComStar's part or a simple typo (those of you looking for the stats on the SparrowHawk or trying to flip back and forth between the Ostscout and the Ostsol know what I'm talking
about). The Zeus most likely began production in 2511, since the Lyrans were the first to steal the plans for BattleMech construction in 2455. Before the Zeus, the Lyrans had put together the Commando.
Note that some data is completely missing. The Rim Worlds Republic also had
early access to BattleMech construction in 2455, but no data (other than the name, size, and some information on speed and weapons for the Jackrabbit, which is an appropriated SLDF design anyway) on any RWR BattleMech design has ever been published.

Which came first?
Some astute critics have pointed out that early BattleMechs such as the Griffin were once considered assault 'Mechs. This seems odd when the capability to build larger machines had already been established by the Mackie. The Striker is, according to most sources, the first assault 'Mech, and even it outweighed the Griffin. The date given for the first production seems inaccurate. If it was really produced in 2550 (as listed in the 3058
TR) then it would have been built long after many of the BattleMechs originally listed as "assault 'Mechs". If, again, the Striker was a victim of a typo and was actually produced in 2450, then this would undoubtedly establish it as the first assault 'Mech.
The Archer was the next assault 'Mech to be built, though it would be later outclassed and relegated to heavy 'Mech status. Records do not show whether the Archer was a Terran Hegemony design or a Successor State design, though the proliferation and widespread use of this popular 'Mech would suggest a little of both.

A 55 Ton Assault 'Mech?
The problem presented by the Griffin is easy to rationalize if one takes into account the political and military climate of the years during which the Terran Hegemony controlled the Inner Sphere. At first glance, it seems a little odd that a 55-ton 'Mech should be classified as an assault 'Mech when much larger 'Mechs such as the Mackie, Emperor, Striker, and Banshee were being built. However, the Griffin is a Successor State design. It is likely that the Successor States (which were the equivalent to the Periphery at
that time, politically and industrially) did not have the materials or production facilities to make BattleMechs in the 80 to 100 ton range. Hence, the 55 ton Griffin was an "assault 'Mech" as far as the Successor States were concerned. 55 tons was probably as large as most Successor States could go. As BattleMech technology advanced throughout the 2500s and the Successor States grew in size and power, the Griffin would naturally be replaced by bigger and better BattleMechs.

Is Bigger Better?
It is important to remember that during the early years of BattleMech production, the relationship between the Terran Hegemony and the Successor States was largely antagonistic. The Terran Hegemony's designs were usually much heavier, as characterized by the Mackie, Emperor, Striker, and Banshee. Using these much larger machines, the Terran Hegemony was able to dominate the battlefield. The Successor State designs, such as the Griffin and Commando, were typically much smaller and carried less firepower. Once the Star League was established, however, the balance of power began to shift towards the Successor States. The Terran Hegemony's larger BattleMechs were becoming obsolete and being replaced with smaller, faster 'Mechs, and larger assault 'Mechs were now being built in the Successor States. Many of the Terran Hegemony designs were absorbed by the SLDF and re-designated as SLDF designs, even though many of them were in production long before the formation of the Star League.

Introduction of New Technology
Part of my purpose to writing all this up was to get an idea of what types of new technology were introduced in what time periods. For instance, the data given on the Thorn states that it was the first BattleMech to use Endo steel (and apparently CASE) and that it was first produced in the late 24th century. Of course, this would put the Thorn a good 50-60 years before the Mackie, so this is probably another typo. The Thorn most likely went into production in the late 2400s, or the 25th century.
There is no definite data on when XL engines were first introduced. The stats given for the Emperor seem to indicate that it was the first to use an XL engine, but it seems unlikely that such an engine would be possible a mere 63 years after the Mackie. Some historians have suggested that the Lancelot was the first to use an XL engine in 2581, which seems much more reasonable. Only two designs other than the Emperor mention XL engines before this date; these are the Excalibur and the NightHawk. However, the data we have on these two designs points out that they were introduced to
SLDF forces during the Reunification War, which could not have happened BEFORE the SLDF was formed in 2571. The production dates we have for the Excalibur and NightHawk must therefore be incorrect.
Assuming that the Emperor listed in the 3058 is an upgrade (Editor's note: According to FASA, it is not an upgrade, and the original date is correct) and the original weapons load has been lost to time, and the Excalibur and NightHawk were first produced sometime after 2581, the the following table illustrates when new technologies were first introduced.

        Technology              Year            BattleMech
        ----------              ----            ----------
        Endo Steel              24?? (late)     Thorn
        CASE                    24?? (late)     Thorn
        Ferro-Aluminum          25?? (early)    Hammerhead (AeroSpace)
        Ferro-Fibrous           2572            Thug
        Double Heat Sinks       2572            Thug
        Beagle Probe            2578            Black Knight
        XL Engine               2581            Lancelot
        NARC Pod                2587            Kintaro
        Gauss Rifle             2592            Highlander
        Guardian ECM            2597            Nightshade (VTOL)
        LB 10-X                 2602            Champion
        Artemis IV FCS          2602            Champion
        Arrow IV System         2611            Chaparral
                                                (Tracked Vehicle)
ER Large Laser          26?? (<2631)    Hussar
        Anti-Missile System     2630            Exterminator
        Ultra AC/5              2651            Sentinel
        SRM-2 Streak            2651            Sentinel
        ER PPC                  2670            Talon
        Pulse Lasers            2696            Lightning (Hovercraft)
        MASC                    2742            Mercury

The above list is by no means entirely accurate, but those are the closest dates I can pin down. TAG or a more basic laser guidance system for guiding down indirect-fire LRMs most likely was developed in 2610 when the Longbow was introduced. It was probably then adapted to guide down Arrow IV homing missiles when the Chaparral was introduced a year later. It is interesting to note that the Beagle probe appeared before the Guardian ECM, but there are no records of the Guardian ECM being used on anything before the Nightshade VTOL. The appearance of the Beagle probe on the Black Night
suggests that Guardian ECMs were appearing on field upgrades or on refits prior to 2578, and the Nightshade was just the first unit to use the system in an actual production model.

Wrapping Things Up (Finally, Eh?)
Well, that about covers most of what I wanted to say. Comments/questions welcome. My data on the Reunification War is pretty sketchy, so some more information on that might help pin down some of the more problematical designs.

Editor's Note:
A few additions or notes have been made. I asked Darrin for permission to post this here for everyone to enjoy. I hope it helps. BTW, FASA has stated they feel that the dates are more iron-clad, so where some data exists that is contradictory, unless it is a typo, the official FASA date is correct, ie., regardless of whether WE think the Emperor's date is too early, FASA says "It is what it says, and at that date". Note, this also does not take into account early variants, or designs that were later modified greatly (such as the Galahad, a Star League design the Clans later modified to its current design, or the "original" Rifleman [statistics, date, etc., all unknown, except that it was equipped "differently"]) or the prototype plans that keep turning up, such as the Enfield and Devastator. All in all, Darrin did an outstanding job on this, but it's tough to make sense out of something designed as it went along.

Trebuchet is 2780 per TR3025 and 3039.  Sarna is wrong.

Actually sarna has the 2780 date in their description which eludes to late era Star League service but 2799 is likely the year which the Free Worlds League began production.

2799 is when the downgraded -5N entered service.

Vindicator VND-2R

Mass: 45 tons
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Chassis Config: Biped
Rules Level: Tournament Legal
Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-D-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 3,574,250 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,225

Chassis: Ceresplex IV Standard
Power Plant: GM 180 Fusion Engine
Walking Speed: 43.2 km/h
Maximum Speed: 64.8 km/h
Jump Jets: Anderson Propulsion Lift
    Jump Capacity: 120 meters
Armor: Hellespont Lite Ferro-Fibrous Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
    2 CeresArms Smashers PPCs
    1 CeresArms Medium Laser
Manufacturer: Ceres Metals Industries
    Primary Factory: Capella
Communications System: CereseCom Model 21-Rs
Targeting and Tracking System: C-Apple Churchill

Overview:
Ordered by Romano Liao before her suicide, the VND-2R upgrades the Capellan's main trooper for warfare under the new conditions faced by the Confederation. As one of the handful of factories not lost in the Fourth Succession War, Ceres Arms' production line on Capella had been working flat out for decades and the retooling provided a welcome respite for long overdue maintenance.

Capabilities:
The new Vindicator uses double-heat sinks to free up tonnage for a second PPC, although it has also been necessary to remove the missile launcher and small laser to make room. The advanced cooling systems allow for sustained use of both PPCs so long and medium range firepower is enhanced rather than reduced.

Advanced armour substitutes have improved the one weak-spot in the Vindicator's generally excellent protection, providing extra coverage of the knees and ankles. This plating is the only part of the Vindicator not manufactured on Capellan, shipped from Sian.

Deployment:
The first four of the new Vindicators, refits rather than new production, marched with the Red Hussars in honour of the inauguration of the new Chancellor. The first production run is expected to be directed to the Confederation Reserve Cavalry rather than more prestigious units, to continue restoring this work-horse brigade.

In the meantime, many Capellan mechwarriors have been honoured with assignment to have their Vindicators refitted to the new standard, accompanying their 'Mechs to Capella for the work. It is believed by some intelligence services that this shake-up will also cover for Sun-Tzu Liao purging units of officers he deems unreliable.

Overview
The Capellan Confederation was left in an unique position when two of its biggest potential opponents turned to either face the wrath of the Clans or to supply the rest of the Inner Sphere with advanced tech.
This gave House Liao some time to look back at their forces and to try to upgrade them. At the top of the list, was the iconic Liao ‘Mech: the Vindicator, whose upgraded version (the VND-3L) had been launched in 3051 but had been so rushed that it didn’t make full use of the potential of advanced tech to turn it into a more than efficient fire-support unit.

Capabilities
Trying to keep the original spirit of the Vindicator, the VND-3LU is an upgraded model of the VND-3L trying to take a step in the right direction with a lot of available components.
This led Ceres Metals Industries to make the best of the cooling system by keeping only 10 Double Heat Sinks, freeing some much needed tons. This was followed by an upgrade of the armour to Ferro-Fibrous giving it almost the maximal protection it could have (and allowing Ceres Metals to experiment with mass production of a new component that is likely to be used in other Capellan ‘Mechs in the future).
The ER PPC was kept and the Medium Pulse Laser was moved to the Left Arm where a Medium Laser was added, giving it good secondary weapons against all kinds of targets. For the fire-support part and apart from the ER PPC, 2 LRM-5 were fitted with one ton of ammo protected in CASE (and for purely defensive operations, some within the CCAF have suggested the use of Thunder ammo to spread minefields when needed) and a TAG to call in for artillery support, something the CCAF is keen on doing.
In the Head, the iconic Laser was replace by an Anti-Missile System to give some sense of protection at longer ranges against missiles.

Battle History
The new Vindicator already got its baptism of fire as its prototype helped stormed ComStar compound on Capella when ComStar and the newly formed Word of Blake fought an open battle in the streets over the control of their facilities on planet.
Thanks to it being on the test field with its TAG active, it was able to quickly call for artillery fire, making the enemy brothers take another road leading them directly into the teeth of a more numerous Liao unit waiting for them.

Variants
Looking at the future war against the Clans and other invaders, Ceres Metals Industries foresaw a need for a ‘Mech able to fight almost forever and with an eye for defensive battle. This is how the VDN-3LD (D for defender) was born. Using a mix of parts from the VND-3LU and from the VND-1R, it packs a Ceres Arms Smasher PPC and instead of the LRM-5, 5 Ceres Arms Medium Lasers, all courtesy of the old production lines of the old Vindicator. 2 Double Heat Sinks were added. As for electronical warfare, which is always a top priority when fighting defensive battles, the original TAG was kept and a Guardian ECM together with a Beagle Active Probe were added (it is to be noted that by implementing this non-proprietary component, Ceres Metals still complies to the original request of the Confederation).
The first tests were promising when using in cities and thanks to the availability of a lot of its components, it is likely to be mass-produced and deployed in most defensive units of the CCAF.

Deployment
Following the traditions of the Capellan Confederation, both variants are being sent to almost all units within the Liao space replacing the VDN-3L and being used to allow more advanced or specialised ‘Mech to be gathered in specific units or for unique missions.
Would this approach will work against the Clans should they come remains to be seen.

Notable ‘MechWarriors
Jesse Villar is a promising member of the Warrior House Lu Sann. In his VND-3LU jian wu (named for a traditional sword dance), he has displayed a flair for supporting other units from afar before rushing to the help of other Warriors should they need it.

Interesting Ice, I did a Capellan Vindicator myself over the weekend and here it is for everyone's review.

VND-3R VINDICATOR

Mass: 45 tons
Chassis: Ceresplex IV
Power Plant: GM 180
Cruising Speed: 43 kph
Maximum Speed: 65 kph
Jump Jets: Anderson Propulsion 30
   Jump Capacity: 120 meters
Armor: Hellespont Lite Ferro-Fibrous with CASE
Armament:
   1 Zeus LRM-10
1 Ceres Arms Warrior Extended-Range Particle Projection Rifle
   1 CeresArms Medium Laser
   1 Hessen Small Laser
Manufacturer: Ceres Metals Industries
   Primary Factory: Capella
Communication System: CeresCom Model 21 RS
Targeting & Tracking System: C-Apple Churchill

Overview:
While the VND-3L Vindicator lostech upgrade was introduced in 3051 it left a lot to be desired. The VND-1R had been a well-balanced low-tech war machine for the Capellan Cpnfederation since its introduction in 2826. It had a richly deserved reputation for being a rugged workhorse for House Liao throughout the rest of the Succession Wars. The recovery of Star League technology forever altered the environment in which this BattleMech thrived. Compared to the improved performance of other designs the new Vindicator was just flat unimpressive and bizarrely oversinked. Ceres Metals set out to correct this flaw while simultaneously improving on the Vindicator’s overall performance.

Capabilities:
In order to make way for this refit all nine tons of Starshield armor was removed along with three Double Heat Sinks. A Zeus LRM-10 previously used on the Manticore doubled the old fire support from the smaller Sian/Ceres Jaguar LRM-5 which had been a staple of the Vindicator. The original CeresArms Medium Laser and Hessen Small Laser from the VND-1R reappeared on the VND-3R which dropped the Ceres Arms Model W Medium Pulse Laser. Mechwarriors preferred the longer range of the standard Medium Laser over the Pulse and together with the Small Laser at close range they could generate more firepower. Only the Ceres Arms Warrior Extended-Range Particle Projection Rifle remained from the 3L and together with its new supporting arsenal produced a slightly improved performance. This reconfigured armament taxed the remaining dozen Double Heat Sinks but only Alpha Strikes combined with high stress movements like running or jumping could produce an overheating condition. Even this was minor in nature and these maneuvers had to be continuously repeated in order to produce negative side effects which was unlikely. Eight and a half tons of Hellespont Lite Ferro-Fibrous armor plating with CASE created near maximum armor protection for the new Vindicator which again was a small enhancement.

Deployment:
Many are still unimpressed by this ‘minor’ Vindicator upgrade but that is the charm of this Capellan fire support workhorse. Costing under four million C-bills, easily mass produced by Ceres Metals, and with refits for existing models a relatively simple affair this BattleMech design should rapidly proliferate the CCAF which needs every piece of equipment it can get its hands on. This quite capable and highly reliable war machine should be a shot in the arm for the overly taxed rump Confederation which is currently involved in ‘strictly defensive operations’ as the 3rd Marik Civil War plays out.

Variant:
The VND-4R takes this lostech upgrade a step further by replacing the old GM 180 with the new VOX 225 XL. This more powerful engine designed for a soon to be unveiled Elemental killer based on the Vindicator provides greater speed for this slow Medium BattleMech. Now capable of 86 kilometers per hour designers also added a fifth Anderson Propulsion 30 Jump Jet for even greater mobility. While these lifters had to be repositioned to each leg a single thruster remains in the center torso to provide balance. Lastly, the Hessen Small Laser Small Laser was replaced by a second CeresArms Medium Laser thanks to weight savings. These additions boosted performance again but at the cost of heat generated by movement and weapons without adding any further heat dissipation. As such the VNR-4R can overheat much quicker so pilots must carefully monitor their rate of fire and movement. Due to its cost, nearly seven and a half million C-bills, which is nearly double the 3R and the fact that some Liao Mechwarriors actually prefer the durability of the standard 180 Fusion Plant over the bulky 225 Extra Light the 4R is rare. It is typically awarded as a gift by the Chancellor for outstanding service or a special order for those wealthy enough to afford it.

I have another idea. We will see if I manage to write my fluff down before the clock (and finish the overall concept too).

There was a timeline document for Mech designs I will try to locate now.

Well here it is. Let me blow the dust off of this file which is dated 1998. Almost an antique!

Please keep in mind that there is a lot more information out there now but this ain't too shabby, enjoy this blast from the past.

Masterunitlist.info has the full timeline for all designs and variants

These two new Vindicators from the St. Ives Compact were made with the technical assistance of the erstwhile allies in the Federated Suns who provided the technology to build the 225XL fusion engine. The first is an upgrade of the VND-1SIC and replaces the larger laser with a new ER variant while the LRM launcher gets an Artemis IV FCS for greater accuracy.
Secondary armament consists of a pair of medium lasers and a single small pulse laser. 8.5 tons of ferro-fibrous covers the standard frame on both models. Twelve double heat sinks provide sufficient heat dissipation for the first variant.

Re: Optimizing the Vindicator
« Reply #24 on: July 16, 2020, 04:10:29 AM »

These two new versions of the Liao standard medium Battlemech are nearly identical. The only difference being that one mounts a falmer while the other has a TAG unit. Like their counterparts in the Compact they feature a 225XL engine as their power source. Unlike the Compact Vindies, the Capellan versions come with endo-steel frames and standard armor to save even more weight. Each model comes with a Ceres Arms Warrior ER PPC and an LRM-15 launcher for added long-range punch. The new developed Thunder LRM ammunition is available on both models. 9.5 tons of standard armor provides the same protection as their Compact cousin models. A mere eleven double heat sinks help to mitigate the heat build up from the ER PPC abd secondary weapons.

Re: Optimizing the Vindicator
« Reply #27 on: July 16, 2020, 12:17:41 PM »

Built at a new factory line at the Pinard Protectorates Ltd. facility on MacLeod's Land, the following Vindicator's are more variants of the original VND-1R Vindicator than all-new designs. All three variants use a standard 180 fusion engine that has been refit with double heat sinks (thanks House Liao) and are fitted with ferro-fibrous. The Canopians took an unusual approach by stripping away the PPC and replacing it with two Sunglow Type 3 ER Large Lasers. These lasers are simply upgraded Sunglow Type 2 larger refit with new lenses and power units borrowed from the Capellan-built Martell ER Large laser. The missile launcher has been moved to the center torso due to one of the large lasers now resting in the left torso. The launcer is a Shannon Fore SRM-4 rather a LRM-5. Additional firepower comes from a standard small and medium laser. Armor protection is 8.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor that originally came from the Capellans, but is now produced in the Concordat. The thirteen double heats sinks have to work hard to keep the heat in check.

The first of two variants, the VND-4T is a take on the VND-1SIC and replaces the large laser with a large pulse laser. The large pulser is thought to be a poor choice of weapon, but the Taurians could not refuse the deal that the Lyrans were offering on the Thuderbolt-12 design. )Little did the Taurians know that the folks at TharHes Industries were trying to phase out the design due to its poor performance versus the Clans). They kept the LRM launcher from the VND-1SIC and gave it two tons of ammunition. A medium pulse laser and a standard medium laser are the backups. Eight tons of ferro-fibrous armor protect the chassis and eleven double heat sinks keep this Vindy fairly cool.

The VND-5T was originally going to be the Canopian variant, but they changed their minds and went with twin ER large lasers rather than a standard PPC. The Taurians glommed onto this variant once they discovered just how piss poor the large pulse laser performed. Along with the PPC switch, the Taurians like the addition of the SRM-6 as it would be able to cover the shorter ranges that the LRM and PPC could not. All of the remaining specs are identical to the VND-4T model.

Re: Optimizing the Vindicator

The Liao Davion feud has taken the stalwart design of the Liao favored Vindicator and morphed it into a rival to one of their hated enemies signature designs. Upgrading its speed and maneuverability thanks to the deal worked out with the Draconis Combine and Wakazashi Enterprises for their Nissan 225 fusion engines. The design incorporates the latest in Liao Triple Strength Myomer technology to further its increase in speed in certain battlefield situations. Replacing the standard PPC with the newer ER variant has negated the need for the paltry and often useless long range missile system of the traditional design. As well due to its lack of now minimum ranges dropping the paltry small laser instead adding an additional twin Ceres Arms medium lasers. The inclusion of the hatchet personal defense weaponry was seen as a means to an end with adding a potent close range weapon as well as showing the FedRats that they could improve upon the usage that they had done with their own Hatchetman design.
