I originally only had two in the chamber, but once I posted those two I got inspired and went mad like a Bull in a china shop

Glad you went nuts Abele but check on your Liao Wasp as it has a fluff error I commented on earlier.

WSP-2T (Irose) I really like this design as proposed with dual Streak SRM-2s and two Medium Lasers which essentially doubles the firepower of the original. Best of all is the one ton of ammo (50) shots is now split between two launchers for greater usage which somewhat mitigates against the dangers of massive ammo explosions. One launcher will never get through this much ammo but two stands a chance. An interesting Taurian design without jump jets.

WSP-2T (Abele) another take on the Taurian Wasp which keeps jump jets for its short range arsenal which is a plus but I have to confess I like the dual missile launchers as opposed to two Medium Lasers if I have to choose. The reason for this is listed above in Irose's entry but SRM-2s might be a superior launching system thanks to their smaller size and possible use of inferno rounds. A good competition here again.

Wonder where Bradshaw, masterarminas, and Ice Hellion have gone?

WSP-2W Wasp

Designed and developed by Blackwell Industries (on Outreach), the WSP-2W Wasp is the direct descendant of the older WSP-1W Wasp which originated within the mercenary regiment Wolf's Dragoons.

Like the WSP-1W, the -2W variant forgoes any missile weapons to focus on carrying lasers exclusively.  But whereas the older version carried only six Small Lasers, the new built WSP-2W instead mounts two Diverse Optics Type 2 Medium Lasers, supported by four Diverse Optics Type 1 Small Lasers.  This simple change not only increases maximum damage output, but also gives the WSP-2W Wasp extra reach that older version simply did not have.

In order to mount this formidable (for a 20-ton light-class BattleMech, at least!) weapons array, Wolf's Dragoons authorized Blackwell to design and incorporate an Endo-Steel II internal structure.  And to compensate for the high heat production, double-strength heat sinks were ordered to be fitted to the design.  Still, the design engineers found that they could not accommodate the desired weapons load, not without further cost increases and weight savings.

One study, however, showed that by utilizing a Hermes 140 Extra-Light Fusion engine (which would boost speed to 75.6 kilometers per hour walking and 118.8 kph running), the tonnage would become available . . . although excess internal space was rapidly disappearing!  Computer simulations showed that with the addition of a 7th Rawlings 52 Jump Jet (for a total jump distance of 210 meters), the proposed WSP-2W Wasp could (barely) manage to squeeze the desired weapons loadout onto the chassis.  Enough tonnage remained to boost the Durallex Light armor to a full 4.0 tons, giving the new Wasps of Wolf's Dragoons a higher chance of survival on the modern battlefield.

Although expensive, General Wolf authorized Blackwell to begin limited production in 3053.  The first production run was intended exclusively for the use of Wolf's Dragoons, but in 3055, General Wolf gave the green light to market a limited number of the new Wasps for export.

The WSP-2W remained in production until Blackwell's factories on Outreach were destroyed during the Jihad.  Just under 500 examples had been produced by that time, roughly 20% of which remained assigned to active or reserve Wolf's Dragoons units.  The remainder were deployed throughout the Inner Sphere and near Periphery in the ranks of other mercenary formations and the armed forces of the Federated Commonwealth.

WSP-2W (masterarminas) a good design from the Wolf Dragoons on Outreach certainly and while I'd normally speak of the difficulty of creating a new 140XL Engine model here it is a lot less than Clan tech possibilities already available to them. The armor is the best it can possibly be for a 20 tonner and at only 2.5 million C-bills this model isn't as expensive as the high tech Stinger from the last contest. Only thing I'd suggest to make it better would be the complete exchange of Medium Lasers for the remaining Smalls. Yeah I know it wouldn't be a W WSP without Small Lasers but the firepower would be reduced only by 2 while the range would triple and heat would go up by 2 as well which is well within heat tolerance on this model. A jumping Alpha Strike would only produce 19 heat. Still a very nice model here. ;)

I've update my WSP-3N (NARC) entry which also has a 3P (SRM-6) variant for those interested.

https://www.ourbattletech.com/forum/index.php?topic=3814.msg48144#msg48144

Also if anyone would like to try their hands at a larger Wasp (LAM to BattleMech conversion at 30 tons or Super Wasp of 25 tons) please go ahead and do so! Oops, got those weights backwards - now fixed. After just seeing my first one in the flesh I'm gonna try and make a Cicada Killer (Wasp) myself - big suckers!!

Re: Optimizing the Wasp
« Reply #23 on: August 22, 2019, 09:53:25 PM »

Very nice Bradshaw, 5 variants for each Great House presumably. Here are some quick thoughts.

WSP-2K (Bradshaw)
I like your lostech hard charging Kurita version of the Wasp despite it diverging from its canon Machine Gun roots. EndoSteel and a MASC combine with two Medium Lasers along with four tons of standard armor to create a pretty solid Wasp. Double Heat Sinks are a little bit of design overkill here as you really don’t need them as a jumping alpha strike produces 12 heat. You could do that action twice with ten single heat sinks before suffering any ill effects of overheating. Coupled with the fact that a MASC Alpha Strike would produce only 7 heat or a Running Alpha Strike produces 8 this design can cool itself pretty quickly. That and no fluff really hurt your case.

WSP-2M (Bradshaw)
This high tech Marik sniper is the only Bradshaw entry to feature an XL Engine together with EndoSteel and Double Heat Sinks. Armed with an ER Large Laser this model is really high end and pretty well protected thanks to four ton of armor. While I could quibble with you on the armor distribution this is clearly one of your best. Too bad there is no fluff.

WSP-2L (Bradshaw)
Despite having no fluff this is a very Liao Wasp variant which stays true to its canon roots by utilizing EndoSteel to free up a ton. An SRM-4 and Medium Laser are mounted as its arsenal which is all very nice but why only three tons of standard armor? Should have gone for at least Ferro-Fibrous here bud which according to my calculations would have improved your protection factor by 6 to 54 total. Not much of a difference but easily accomplished with a minimal of cost and difficulty.

WSP-2D (Bradshaw)
I was hoping you’d have a Davion complement to their long-range missile carrying Locust and you did get it in. With the help of EndoSteel you get a LRM-5 and Medium Laser on the Wasp which sports three tons of standard armor. I would have preferred the improved protection of Ferro-Fibrous but since this is a long-range harasser you can sort of justify even though you did not as it unfortunately it has no fluff. So even though you get away from the Davion variant of the Wasp this is one of my favorite models you pulled off.

WSP-2S (Bradshaw)
While the need to have a TAG carrying Wasp is there for FedCom forces something is missing aside from the from the fluff.  EndoSteel and Double Heat Sinks are great for a start and I don’t mind two Medium Lasers but two Small Lasers and no Ferro-Fibrous which the 1S has? With a Mech armed with point blank weaponry you should have added Ferro-Fibrous at least especially cause it was on the last model.

Alright, still working on the Cicada Killer for my 25 ton Super Wasp but here is the Yellowjacket. This is a 30 ton BattleMech built off refurbished Wasp LAM chassis deployed during the Marik Civil War. Not sure which faction commissioned it yet but it probably wouldn't be the central government - more likely one of the opposition forces. I was thinking of a tie in story with the Marik Guard for a stockpile of these Wasp LAMs which were mothballed following the 4th Succession War because of a lack of spare parts but never completed it. Engineers at an unnamed Refurbishment company on the nearby Game World of Solaris removed the LAM conversion equipment to make way for the new design. Advanced lostech components include the Edasich Motors 180 XL Engine from the Hatchetman, Ferro-Fibrous, Double Heat Sinks, and an ER Large Laser. Essentially it becomes an enlarged version of the original.

OVERVIEW
Clearly an experimental model which has its roots in Wolf Dragoon lore this lostech upgraded version was an unfinished concept based on the Super Wasp. I thought it would be appropriate for this NAIS prototype to make an appearance here but the exact storyline is coming into view. It would be a Wolf Dragoon war machine built in response to the Clan Invasion as well as the InnerSphere optimization efforts. I am still working on the fluff for this design and just wanted to get this design in for our little contest. Essentially a fast-moving well-armed sniper this BattleMech would be quite formidable against numerous opponents including Clan Lights.
I have renamed this BattleMech in honor of our favorite bug hunting device which certainly fits thanks to its ER PPC, zap! This is more appropriate than the Cicada Killer which was a nice idea but I like this hook better. The more I thought about it the more this advanced Wolf Dragoon design made on Outreach will help address the Clan menance. The final cost per unit would be 3,612,916 C-bills.
The Dragoons would have to develop the new chassis and extra light engine but for them it would not be much of an issue in my opinion. With the Gallowglas importing the Tiegart Maximum ER PPC to Outreach why not more for this design? For Ferro-Fibrous why not use the StarSlab (same brand as the original Wasp) 511 Ferro Fibrous from the War Dog? Five tons of this advanced plating would provide full armor protection for these 25 tonners even though its bulk would eliminate all but one critical space. Much of the rest of this Mech’s components (jump jets and electronic systems) would be pulled straight from its predecessor the Wasp.

Unless my  memory has failed, I don't think you can use XL engines on LAMs. Then again it's been so long since I cracked the spine on a rulebook I'm probably wrong.

Very true Abele but the Yellowjacket is a BattleMech based on a refurbished Wasp LAM chassis whose conversion equipment has been ripped out. So it won't be transforming anytime soon. Sorry I didn't explain it better but I wanted to get the concept out there before the contest was over.

And now it is over. Please no more submissions as the judging will now commence!

Well another busy weekend but the review is well underway. Hoping to be done soon but I did leave some comments on Bradshaw's designs and a couple of larger Wasps for you to comment on above. See ya tomorrow folks!
