Optimizing the Wasp
« on: August 13, 2019, 09:38:13 PM »

The third InnerSphere BattleMech to be optimized for peak performance just after the Clan Invasion is a lot like the second. This early 3050s refit project will mirror the Clan Quicksilver Trials which will hopefully give everyone the best possible Tech to do Battle with. Before discussing my design thoughts with you on the Wasp here is the Mech of the Week Article from the CBT Forum to spur you along.

’Mech of the Week: WSP-* / Super Wasp
https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,26253.0.html

Optimal Design Thoughts on the Wasp

Role. The Wasp is probably deployed more widely than the Locust or the Stinger and is perhaps the most manufactured BattleMech in the entire Human Sphere. The sheer number of these 20-ton jumpers could dictate its own role which I dare say is cannon fodder. Unlike the Stinger which itself is a knockoff of the Wasp it has many different variants which indicate varying roles. From scout to backstabber to light support asset the Wasp does it all making it the lightest workhorse ‘Mech around.

Factories. [9 or 10 different complexes in 6 or nations] WSP-1 – Alpheratz (Outworlds Alliance), Perdition and Taurus (Taurian Concordat), Sian (Capellan Confederation), Canopus IV (Magistracy of Canopus); WSP-1S – Furillo (Federated Commonwealth); WSP-3M – Kalidasa and Shiro III (Free Worlds League); WSP-3W – New Avalon (Federated Commonwealth); unclear about the original General Mechanics factory on Mars which could plausibly be cranking out new machines for the ComGuards?

Internal Structure. The very generically designated 1A Type 3 two-ton standard chassis that proliferates the entire Human Sphere is incredibly common. Certainly not an obstacle to upgrading the BattleMech as the new 3W built on New Avalon shows. The new 3M designed in the Free Worlds League does utilize EndoSteel in its Irian Chassis Second Generation Class 20 chassis. If you have an EndoSteel foundry started up already this could be a good way to get an extra ton for 14 criticals.

Engine. The InnerSphere Extra-Light (XL) Fusion Plants are very bulky and have issues with increased fragility thanks to their bulkiness but this upgrade would be the best way to get extra mass for upgrades. Firepower over survivability here could be the way to go for this ubiquitous 20-ton Light Mech. Developing such an XL Engine could be something of a process as none is currently in production. Fourteen manufacturers currently produce the standard120 Fusion Engine making it one of the more common power plants made. This makes it a very inexpensive component especially when compared to designing a whole new XL which would be a costly endeavor.

Jump Jets. While I am tempted to say that mobility is integral for this Light 'Mech there are already existing variants that lack these lift devices. Strange I know as the Wasp was the first war machine that used them ever but hey I cannot argue with the facts in evidence folks.

Heat Sinks. With such a small Fusion reactor (120) the Wasp like the Stinger has problems mounting all of its free coolers. Only 4 Heat Sinks can be included in this compact power plant meaning 6 must be placed. This could be a problem if we need Double Heat Sinks which thanks to the high heat jump jets may be required for increased weapon fire. That would mean 18 criticals occupied in that event which could preclude the use of EndoSteel or Ferro-Fibrous especially if a XL Engine is included.

Cockpit & Gyro. Not much can be done here to improve the performance of the machine given the available level of technology. However, both components are plentiful and have proven to be reliable over time.

Armor. While Light Mechs have plenty of internal space available we may be running out of room for Ferro-Fibrous. In my view these advanced composites are the least advantageous given a choice between the alternatives (Endo Steel, XL Engine, and Double Heat Sinks). However, they are available and at least in regards to refits easier to accomplish. Durallex Light Standard Armor Plating might be the way to go here even if a slight increase in weight is needed to achieve max protection. Again, like the Stinger an argument can also be made that any more mass dedicated here is a waste better used for offensive capabilities.

Weapons & Equipment. There are a lot of possibilities here gang and the Wasp is wide open for a bunch of variants. For me I think missiles when I think of the primary differences from the Stinger but as Bradshaw and I spoke about before there are just so many options. Existing variants really demonstrate the Wasp’s general utility quite effectively.

Design Criteria
Design: Wasp Light BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 20 tons
Cockpit: (3 tons)

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. I've also become a fan of massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries (Free Worlds League in particular has gone in this direction) which could provide closer equivalents to Clan LRMs. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. While we will be focusing on the InnerSphere and their efforts to defeat the Clans by matching as best we can their equipment performance don't forget the Periphery. High tech efforts by a rebuilding ComGuard following Tukayyid or their erstwhile brethren the Word of Blake could be your angle. Then you have different Great Houses and their significant Regions or Worlds concentrating on fortifying their militaries ranging from line troops to militia. There are also Corporate concerns which could come into play or let’s not forget our favorite mercenaries.

I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible.

Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday August 23, 2019 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full seven days for this contest, good luck!!

WSP-3N WASP
Mass: 20 tons
Chassis: Irian Second Generation Class 20 Endo Steel
Power Plant: GM 120 XL
Cruising Speed: 66.5 kph
Maximum Speed: 95.1 kph
Jump Jets: Rawlings 52
   Jump Capacity: 180 meters
Armor: Durallex Light
Armament:
1 Octagon Missile-Magnet Narc Beacon
   1 Starflash II Medium Laser
Manufacturer: Kali Yama Weapons Industries
   Primary Factory: Kalidasa
Communications System: Irian E.A.R.
Targeting and Tracking System: Wasat Aggressor

OVERVIEW
What began as an experimental project to equip select FWLM units with NARC Missile Beacons in order to augment the firepower of their long-range missile boats took hold during the Civil War. The Silver Hawk Coalition decided to join this effort to improve their Provincial troops who were endangered by internal discontent bought on by Blakist fanatics, various warring Marik factions, and the ever-present foreign threat posed by Lyran aggressors. Thanks to generous financing from House Kurita which needed all the manufacturing help it could get in facing down the Clan Invasion the decision was made to engineer a high-tech Wasp which featured the Narc Missile Beacon.

CAPABILITIES
The Octagon Missile-Magnet NARC Beacons which were originally produced on site for the TBT-7M Trebuchet and ON1-M Orion were repurposed for this light weight mobile spotter. Fitting this accuracy enhancing launcher on such a small chassis would prove challenging as it and its ammo would consume twenty percent of the BattleMech’s total mass. Thankfully the Second Generation Irian Chassis made of EndoSteel was already a part of the lostech upgrades originally deployed by House Marik. Unfortunately, the Jolassa-328 Ferro-Fibrous made on Umka for the 3M proved unobtainable during the conflict because of distance and too bulky. With plenty of Durallex Light armor plating still available and easily put back into production at Kalidasa this obstacle was easily overcome. Adding a ton of this standard armor improved the 3N’s protection factor over the original 1A which was quite valuable. Still more advanced materials were needed to save weight which meant designing and adding the new GM 120 XL Engine. The engineering challenges were numerous especially because of this small power plant’s sheer bulk. Together with the EndoSteel internals this lostech device reduced internal space all but eliminating Double Heat Sinks. The tiny Extra Light Engine was simply incapable of mounting so many freezers which themselves were incredibly bulky. Even some safety improvements like a CASE had to be scrapped because of a lack of critical room. Designers even considered removing the lower arm and the left-hand actuator to create more space. Thankfully the elimination of Ferro-Fibrous as well as other high tech but bulkier products elevated interior concerns. Technicians who maintain the 3N still complain that they have little room whatsoever to work on the ‘Mech adding time to their already busy maintenance schedules. Despite its unpopularity with Techs all components are now made locally on Kalidasa which please the Silver Hawk Coalition to no end. Even the Wasp’s trademark Medium Laser is now shipped in from nearby Amity by Imstar AeroSpace. The Starflash II Medium Laser was originally made for the Cheetah-R but has already proven a fine fit here as well.

DEPLOYMENT
The WSP-3N joined Coalition units along with the new HBK-6K Hunchback during the Civil War making them a force to be reckoned with. Both the Silver Hawk regiments and 31st Marik Militia received these high-tech missile spotters first and used them with great effect. Trebuchets and Orions working with these new Wasps have reported large improvements in missile strikes. The Dieron Regulars are the next unit to receive this ‘Mech following the conclusion of hostilities in the Free Worlds League.

VARIANT
The WSP-3P replaces the Narc Launcher with an SRM-6 and it is typically assigned as a partner for the 3N. Its extra firepower in addition to the 3Ns other Lance mates create a powerful missile battery which can swiftly decimate almost any force. However, the lack of a local manufacturing source in the Silver Hawk Coalition has limited the 3Ps deployment leading to a far greater number of 3Ns in service.

Re: Optimizing the Wasp
« Reply #2 on: August 13, 2019, 09:48:20 PM »

Following the Clan Invasion, the AFFC found itself needing to replace the large number of mechs destroyed by the Clans. The Valkyrie, long a favorite of the AFFS/C, was ordered into increased production. Even with the information from the Helm memory core, which allowed the restoration of the Corean factory on New Avalon, production of the Valkyrie could not keep up with the demands of the AFFC.  Achernar Battlemechs, seeing an opportunity, offered the AFFC a new variant of the Wasp.  Unofficially referred to as the Valkyrie Light, the WSP-3D sought to create a mech that had similar capabilities to that of the Valkyrie.

The new design saved weight by replacing the chassis with an Endo Steel Frame and using a new Extra Light Fusion Engine.  The design team removed the Bical SRM Twin-Rack and replaced it with a pair of Magna Longbow 5 LRM Launchers.  The original plan had called for mounting a single Federated 10 Shot launcher which is used on the Dervish.  However the bulky Endo Steel frame and XL Engine prevented them from mounting it.  Instead they had to use a pair of Magna Longbow 5s, which were also used on the LCT-3D.  These smaller launchers could be shoe horned into the torsos of the Wasp.  This effectively gave the WSP-3D the same long range firepower as the Valkyrie.  The WSP-3D retains the ChrisComp 39 Medium Laser in the right arm for close in defense.

The new design was quickly accepted for production by the AFFC as a stop gap measure until enough Valkyries could be produced to replace the losses that were suffered in the fighting against the clans.

    1  C3 Computer (Slave)
Manufacturer: Alliance Defenders Limited
    Primary Factory: Alpheratz
Communications System: Duotech 65
Targeting and Tracking System: RadCom TXX

Overview:
While the Draconis Combine doesn't manufacture the Wasp, the sheer proliferation of the 'Mech over almost six centuries of service means that large numbers exist in the DCMS inventory, typically refitted with a machinegun in place of the SRM launcher. As scouts, these were frequently refitted to carry the new C3 slave computers and the WSP-2K was formalised shortly before the Outreach Conference of 3051.

Seeing a need for more Wasps in the future, Gunji-no-Kanrei Theodore Kurita negotiated with the Outworlds Alliance for the purchase of additional Wasp chassis, unarmoured and with space left for more advanced electronics. After securing a commitment from First Prince Hanse Davion that this wouldn't be considered a violation of their traditional neutrality, the OWA has authorised this sale. The first shipments left Alpheratz shortly before the Battle of Tukkayid, destined for Scarborough Limited's plant on Al Na'ir, where the C3 computers and ferrofibrous armour awaits them.

Overview:
In late 3052, Gibson Federated BattleMechs announced their license to build the Wasp, agreed with Irian Technologies. At first it was believed this would be the new WSP-3M that had debuted the previous year only for this to be later clarified to be the WSP-2M. Differences between the two have not been officially clarified with many believing that Irian have offloaded an inferior prototype on one of their industrial rivals.

Actual reports from the new ComStar leadership suggest that the WSP-2M is actually based on a ComGuards refit that saw limited production on Mars at some point during the Succession Wars, though modified to use parts from within the Free Worlds League. This strongly indicates that the Wasps built on Gibson are intended for the Word of Blake to begin building their own military forces.

Re: Optimizing the Wasp

Well we've already got three designs in and likely more to come on the first night of this contest. Here are my first comments.

WSP-3N (Takiro)
Not sure I love this variant which is designed to take advantage of the Marik NARC philosophy I am developing for Salient Horizon. Essentially done to reduce the size of LRM racks to maximize weight efficiency which is especially important in light of the Clan technical edge it sees the Free Worlds League Military (FWLM) go to the LRM-5 for ever missile boat and NARC carriers to promote accuracy on target. This is a team work philosophy which they generally employ which is far different from the Clans and also builds on their manufacturing of NARC systems.

WSP-3D (Irose)
One of my early favorites of the bat this fire support model with twin LRM racks also hits on similarities to the Valkyrie. Fluff is solid and this will be a tough one to beat for the Davions who already deploy a Locust LRM variant. Great job Irose!

WSP-2K (drakensis)
Another good one keying in on the Draconis Combine need for war machines in light of the Clan Invasion and the Outworlds Alliance manufacturing facility. Addressed also is the Federated Commowealth in this deal which I imagine would still have problems with the Robinson or Draconis March as a result. Still it fits well, isn't too advanced and also opens other opportunities for additional designs. Fantastic!

WSP-2M (drakensis)
A solid scout variant built upon Marik manufacturing and ComStar/Word of Blake expertise which is certainly a possibility given the current situation. Still trying to figure out if the Mars facility is operational at this time.

So far none of the published designs is like the two, and only two, designs I have on mu comp at home. Will publish when I get off work. Expect something in the next four hours as I have fluff to write as well.

Okay 1 more.  That's probably it for me.

While the WSP-1S was rushed into production in response to the Clan threat, another engineering team at Defiance Industries on Furillo looked into developing a more advanced model for the AFFC. Intended to combine the best features of the WSP-1A and the WSP-1S models, the new Wasp was designed as an anti-vehicle/anti-infantry unit.  Using the newly developed Defiance 120XL engine, the design team was able to free up more mass for additional weapons, while retaining the WSP-1A's mobility.

Early field reports of the WSP-1S featured a number of complaints about the Mech's short range weapons.  The P5M Pulse Laser and B3S Laser required the Wasp to get very close to enemy units, where it would be exposed to heavy fire, which the Mech's light armor could not protect against.  A number of Mech pilots also lamented the loss of the SRM launcher and it's heavier firepower.  Based on this feedback, the design team chose to retain the B3M laser and HoverTech SRM launcher which were carried by the WSP-1A.  The decision to retain the older model SRM launcher rather then mount the newer Coventry T4H Streak Launcher was at first met with some resistance from Wasp pilots.  Once it was understood that the intention was for the WSP-3S to carry Inferno rounds for use against vehicles and infantry, something the Streak Launcher can not do, the opposition to the HoverTech launcher largely disappeared.  To protect the Mechwarriors from the large amount of ammo carried in the event of an ammo explosion, the WSP-3S carries a CASE in the torso.

In keeping with the Mech's role as an anti-infantry/anti-armor unit, the designers retained the Zippo Flamer carried by the WSP-1S.  Mounted in the left armor, the weapon has proven very effective in combat.

The final addition to the mech was the Cyclops-Beagle Sensory Probe, which is also used on the new model of the Firestarter from Coventry Metal Works.  The Beagle Probe will allow the WSP-3S to located hidden units, especially tanks and infantry hiding in urban environments. While this greatly increased the cost of the mech, the cost increase was more then offset by the increased performance of the Mech. It also allowed the Mech to fill a secondary role as a scout for the AFFC.

In a series of recent trials, the WSP-3S was found to greatly out perform the WSP-1S.  The AFFC has order the new design into production at Furillo, replacing the WSP-1S on the production line.

Re: Optimizing the Wasp
« Reply #7 on: August 14, 2019, 10:37:16 AM »

The WSP-2FC Wasp is a joint collaboration between Defiance Industries on Furillo and Achenar Battlemechs on New Avalon. The major stumbling block to the design was the of an extra-light version of the GM 120 fusion engine.Using the larger 180 XL found in the newest Hatchetman variant as a template, the engineers at Defiance Industries came up with several prototypes and shared their success with their partners on New Avalon. The Achernar engineers then chose to use an Endo-steel chassis to decrease the weight even further.

Next both design teams agreed to arm the new Wasp with an ER large laser, used locally sourced versions either the Cyclops XII (Defiance) or the Blankenberg Sweetshot (Achernar). The large laser is backed up by a small laser, also loccaly sourced. Armor is increased by a half-ton with attention being paid to the cockpit and legs. To give the Wasp increased speed, the Achernar team added Triple-Strength Myomer bundles to the design.

Initial field tests proved satisfactory with Lyran-based units conducting raids into the Clan OZ and engaging Wolf forces and destroying or damaging several Koshi and Dasher OmniMechs with the loss of only four Mechs including one [iWasp[/i]. In FedSuns space the new Wasps were tested against pirate forces and on one small raid into Taurian space with no losses to the Wasps.

The Wasp-2L is an upgrade of the ancient Wasp-1L which replaces the the SRM-4 with a Streak SRM-2. With the weight savings gained from the use of Endo-Steel and Ferro-Fibrous armor an Apple Churchill ECM suite has also been added along with a small laser. While the armaments are minimal, the use of an ECM suite allows the Wasp to avoid and evade the enemy on the modern battlefield, It's planned use is as a scout and in ambushes.

The following two variants are designed for the greater mercenary marketplace by the Canopians (WSP-2A) and the Free Worlds League (WSP-2G). The WSP-2A makes use of a standard fusion engine while WSP-2G uses an XL powerplant. Armament for the two Mechs is a similar as both are armed with a Streak SRM and a medium laser with the WSP-2G having a small pulser and a flamer due the use of the XL engine. Even though armor mass is the same the WSP-2A has slightly more protection due to the use of ferro-fibrous armor.

In the Outworlds Alliance, a group of engineers decide to buck tradition and strip the jump jets from the Wasp so that more weaponry and armor could be added. When Alliance Defenders Limited acquired a large number of Hermes 140 fusion engines to refit into their limited number of Panthers. Of the forty engines acquired, only nine went into Panthers, while another seen went into a new hover tank design program. The remaining twenty-four went to the new Wasp variant under development. With maximum ground speed increased by 20 kph and armor protection increased by more than 25%, attention was diverted to armaments. The standard SRM2 is replaced by a new Streak model and moved from the leg to the center torso, Rather than using the new pulse technology, the Alliance engineers added another medium laser citing the longer range of the standard model as the deciding factor.

Oh very nice another Irose and some Abele Wasps to comment on! ;)

WSP-3S (Irose) another good one here combining the 1A [the base model with a Medium Laser and SRM-2] and 1S [a recent lostech upgrade using EndoSteel, Ferro-Fibrous, Medium Pulse, Flamer, and two Small Lasers] thanks to a 120 XL Engine [fluffed away as a FedCom project] which is very nice but you got some competition

WSP-2FC (Abele) is that direct challenge and with an ER Large makes for a very potent harasser especially when combined with a Triple Strength Myomer. Firing the ER Large and the Small Laser while jumping six activates this advanced musculature enabling faster movement (7/11). Tough choice ahead...

WSP-2L (Abele) bit of an error in the fluff on this one which concerned me it speaks of replacing the SRM-4 with a Streak SRM-4. The Streak SRM-4 is not currently available which would invalidate your entry. Now looking at your design it is actually a Streak SRM-2 which is quite legal. Just please correct the typo.

WSP-2A (Abele) I like this Canopian model designed for the mercenary community at large as it uses relatively simple upgrades which could indeed be obtained.

WSP-2G (Abele) This advanced Free Worlds League variant uses an XL Engine to really max out this 20 tonners capabilities

WSP-2OA (Abele) No jump jets and a 140 Fusion Engine taken from a Panther? I like it. This thing has some nice pop thanks to 2 Medium Lasers and a Streak SRM-2. Nice!

Okay, I can't help myself.  One more design.  Not the most advanced but I like the fluff

The Wasp WSP2T is an experimental testbed developed by the Taurian Concordat.  In 3019 the Taurian Concordat located a Star League storehouse on Celeano.  Using the materials found there, the Concordat began to reverse some of the technology found there.  By the 3040s, they had managed to put Ferro-Fibrous armor into production.  A number of other technologies have entered the prototype stage in the recent years.  These efforts have consumed a significant number of Taurian Bulls, which has led the Protector to question whether  the Concordat is receiving any value for it's investment or if the money would be better spent on new fortifications to defend against the Davion threat.  In an effort to show the value of the development programs Pinard Protectorates Limited developed a new variant of the venerable Wasp that would highlight some of the new technologies that were entering production.

The PPL design team began developing the new design by removing the Harvester SRM Launcher and Rawlings 52 Jump Jets.  While removing the Jump Jets reduced the mobility of the Wasp, it freed up room and weight for an improved weapons array.  Replacing the Harvester SRM was a pair of experimental Pinard Reaper Streak SRM Rack.  Doubling the missile firepower and improving the ammo efficiency made the Mech far more potent on the battlefield.  The design team also managed to mount a second Diverse Optics Type 18 Laser in the left arm.

The Wasp's Durallex Light armor has been replaced with the Durallex Light Ferro-Fibrous armor, providing better protection, mainly to the legs and torso. While only a slight improvement in protection levels, the design team felt it was worth the added cost.

It is hoped that the new Wasp will enter mass production soon, the main limitation is the availability of production quality Streak Racks, PPL hopes to have the kinks worked out with in the next year or 2.

Taurus Territorial Industries put forth its own design that uses endo-steel technology acquired, at a very price, from their Capellan neighbors and ferro-fibrous armor. Unlike the submission made by their competitors at Pinard, the jump jets are retained, but Streak technology is not used. The SRM-2 has been moved to the left torso, while a second medium laser has also been added for added offensive capability. While this WSP-2T is not very different from the standard WSP-1A, but it does its best to take advantage of the new technologies made available to the Concordat.

A third Irose and another Abele variant?! I'll have to take a look at these Taurian models tomorrow. ;)
