Title: Optimizing the Whitworth
Post by: Takiro on May 10, 2020, 09:19:53 PM
I guess contest number eighteen is a guilt secret of mine even though I can’t say my love of the Whitworth has ever been a secret. Beats me as to why? Maybe it’s the fact that this ‘Mech is a nice supporting asset that sets up your other forces and I am a sucker for the unheralded hero. I really didn’t realize that the ‘Worthless’ or the ‘Tin Woodsman’ had such a cult following. Will this maligned Mech take the canon path of obsolesce or will a new trial be blazed in Salient Horizon for the Whitworth? You’ll have to decide, let’s see what you guys can do with this forty-ton fire support asset!

Design Criteria
Design: Whitworth Medium BattleMech
Era: 3052, just following the Truce of Tukayyid
Tech: InnerSphere Level 2
Mass: 40 tons

Tech Base
The tech base for this enterprise will be InnerSphere Level 2, also known as Star League lostech, circa 3053. Remember some Level 1 standards which Bradshaw and myself think still have value like Large Lasers and PPCs which feature the same damage factor as their higher tech brethren with less range and perhaps most significantly less heat. Here is a list for your design reference. Let me know if there is anything I missed!

Star League LosTech
Anti-Missile System
Arrow IV Artillery Missile System
Extended Range Large Laser (ER Large Laser)
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon (ER PPC)
Gauss Rifle
Ultra Autocannon/5
LB 10-X Autocannon
One-Shot Missile Packs
Pulse Lasers (Small, Medium, & Large)
Streak SRM-2
Swarm LRMs
Thunder LRMs
Artemis IV FCS
Beagle Active Probe
Guardian ECM Suite
Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry (MASC)
Narc Missile Beacon
TAG
Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment (CASE)
Double Heat Sinks
Endo Steel Internal Structure
Ferro-Fibrous Armor
Extra Light (XL) Engine

InnerSphere Low Tech
Blazer Cannon (or Binary Laser)
Recon Camera
Remote Sensor Dispenser

New Innovations
Triple Strength Myomer
Hatchet
C3 Computer

Design Traits of this Setting
The Free Worlds League in particular have embraced massed LRM-5s over the larger batteries to provide closer mass equivalents to Clan LRMs. Thanks to a corresponding increase in NARC units these ‘fire teams’ have become quite effective in the Marik Civil War. Also, the Blazer has made an appearance in the shattered FWLM searching for an advantage over their former brethren.
Both the Federated Commonwealth and ComStar seem to have gone in the other direction with LRM batteries preferring larger LRM-15s and 20s linked to Artemis IV FCS to enhance accuracy.
Many Draconis optimizations have included the C3 System which is accelerated from the canon setting which saw their deployment lag.
Regional factions like the Draconis March and the Periphery have seen the introduction of some ‘simple’ lostech items like Double Heat Sinks, Ferro-Fibrous, Streak SRM-2s, and Pulse Lasers. Extra-Light (XL) Engines remain too expensive and have drawbacks which make their deployment unlikely here. Advanced orbital facilities needed for EndoSteel manufacturing also remain out of reach at this point. They are not beyond using PPCs and Large Lasers either which they view as more efficient than their ER successors.

Please do your research (think Objective Raids) for available components as this will be another factor in rapid production. I love fluff and your winning designs will be featured in my BattleTech Salient Horizon alternate setting. I'd like to go beyond the refits bought to you by Technical Readout 3050 and delve into extensive redesigns of your BattleTech favorites. Sharpen up your favorite war machines perhaps drawing on past or current variants while remembering the spirit or role of these Mechs. Don't forget to justify the expense of your project and multiple winners are possible. Figure that all entries have to be completed and posted on these forums by Friday May 22nd, 2020 by 11:59 PM which should give you all a full two weeks for this contest, good luck!!

Overview:
During the 2730s, Canopian agents working for the Magistracy Intelligence Ministry used blackmailed to convince a Vice President of the Whitworth Company to provide them with the complete technical specifications for the Whitworth Battlemech. [Editor's Note: It is believed that the executive was partaking in some Canopian activities that would be greatly frowned upon back on Dieron.]  The MIM agents then turned the plans over to Mickelson's Automotive.  Located on Lindenmarle, Mickelson's was founded by Canopian patriots who supported independence from the Star League.  The company's automobile production was a cover the firm's true business, weapons production. These weapons were then provided to the Canopian resistance groups.  The Whitworth-C model was developed in 2742 as a result of a shortage of LRM Launchers for the Whitworth.  Due to a shipping mistake, the company received a shipment of Parti-Kill PPCs in place of the Holly LRM launchers that were used on the Whitworth.  Because of the problems involved in secretly shipping weapons to the Mickelson factory, there was the prospect that the production line would be forced to shut down for an extended period of time once the on hand supply of LRM launchers was used up.  Then one of the company's engineers suggested using the Parti-Kill PPCs on the Whitworth in place of one of the Holly LRMs.  This would allow production to continue uninterrupted until a new shipment of LRMs could arrive.  A single prototype was built and secretly tested by several Canopian mechwarriors. The design proved to be very effective and production began on the new WTH-C model.  The Whitworth-Cs became very popular with the troops, who appreciated the extra firepower and so the design remained in production, even after a new shipment of LRMs arrived at the Mickelson's factory.  Both the WTH-1 and the WTH-C have continued in production at the Magistracy Armaments (Formerly Mickelson's Automotive) factory.   Production continued until a pirate raid in 2810 badly damaged the factory.  Efforts to get Taurian assistance in rebuilding the factory were futile due to the paranoia of Semyon Calderon.  As a result the Whitworth-C ceased production. When Emma Centrella became Magistrix, she began working to improve the nation's economy.  One effort was directed at expanding the Magistracy's industrial capacity.  One project focused on rebuilding the old Magistracy Armaments factory on Lindenmarle.  After 8 years, the factory began producing new Whitworth-Cs.

Capabilities:
Except for the weapons configuration, the Whitworth-C is identical to the standard Whitworth.  While the standard Whitworth is used mainly in a fire support role, the Whitworth-C is used as a front line combat unit.

The main difference between the Whitworth and the Whitworth-C is the replacement of the left torso mounted Holly LRM Launcher and ammo bay with a Parti-Kill Heavy Cannon PPC. The Parti-Kill is a powerful weapon that is also found on the Manticore Tank and the Canopian Leopard Dropship.  Capable of hitting a target at long ranges, the PPC  provides the mech with a strong punch. As a result the Whitworth-C is capable of filling a wider variety of roles then the standard model. In order to get the PPC to fit on the Whitworth, the engineers had to remove the left arm mounted medium laser.  The laser's power feeds interfered with the PPC's mounting and there was no way to reroute it with out redesigning the entire torso.

The biggest problem with the PPC is the added heat burden placed on the mech’s cooling system.  Due to the limited amount of space in the mech, the engineers could not add any additional heatsinks to the design. As a result mechwarriors must be careful when using the PPC to ensure that they do not over heat the mech and cause it to shutdown.

Deployment:
The Whitworth-C is one of the most common medium mechs in the MAF, out numbered only by the Shadow Hawks produced by Magesty Metals & Manufacturing.   It has proved to be far more versatile then the original Whitworth and is very popular with mechwarriors who like the extra fire power of the torso mounted PPC. The mech can be found in every line regiment of the MAF, although the majority of the mechs are found in Raventhir's Iron Hand and 3rd Canopian Fusiliers.

The Whitworth-C saw significant action during the Periphery Uprisings fighting against the SLDF troops. The mech acquitted itself well, surprising the Star League troops with it's additional firepower.  In several instances Star League troops encountered the Whitworth-C and attempted to close with the mechs, in an effort to get within the minimum range of the LRM.  These troops were rudely surprise when they found themselves taking PPC fire from the Whitworth. In most cases, the SLDF soldiers were completely wiped out.

In the years after the fall of the SLDF, the Magistracy sold several Whitworths and Whitworth-Cs to the Taurian Concordat, which only produces a limited number of medium mechs. In exchange the Concordat sold the Magistracy heavy mechs to bolster their forces. The Whitworth-C continued to serve with distinction in the MAF during the course of the Succession Wars.  The mech played major roles in helping to defend the Magistracy against pirates and raiders.

During the recent war against the Capellan Confederation, the Whitworth-C found itself facing off against Capellan Vindicators.  The two mechs were relatively evenly matched and the Whitworth managed to win it's fair share of victories.

The WTH-2C is the newest model of the Canopian Whitworth which was redesigned to take advantage of the newly recovered technologies from the Helm Memory Core.  With only limited capability to incorporate advanced technologies, the new Whitworth has received only modest  improvements.  Even so these have gone a long way towards improving the mechs effectiveness on the modern battlefield.  The biggest change is to replace the old standard heatsinks with the new double strength models.  This is a major improvement and allows the Whitworth to keep up a steady rate of fire, something the older model had issues with.  The other change improves the protection of the mech by encasing the LRM ammo in CASE system to protect against ammo explosions.  This reduces the armor by half a ton, but the use of the newly developed StarSlab/1 Ferro-Fibrous armor actually provides better protection then the older StarSlab/11 armor.

Development work has begun on a WTH-3C model.  While several configurations are being tested the most popular configuration uses an Endo Steel chassis to save weight.  This allows the mech to carry 2 tons of ammo for the LRM launcher, increasing endurance,  as well as an Artemis IV launcher, improving accuracy.  The Parti-Kill PPC is replaced with an extended range model for even longer range firepower.  However due to the bulky size of the Endo Steel and heat sinks, the Ferro-Fibrous armor of the 2C model is replaced with standard armor, slightly degrading the protection of the mech.

Very nice Irose! I like both Canopian Whitworths you've led off with but especially the 2. Simple and effective.

I am working on one design myself Abele along with two reviews. ;)

Era: Clan Invasion
Tech Rating/Era Availability: E/X-X-E-A
Production Year: 3052
Cost: 6,188,560 C-Bills
Battle Value: 1,056

Chassis: Whitworth Type I Standard
Power Plant: Hermes 240 Fusion XL Engine
Walking Speed: 64.8 km/h
Maximum Speed: 97.2 km/h
Jump Jets: Whitworth Jetlift
    Jump Capacity: 120 meters
Armor: Durallex Light Standard Armor
Armament:
    2 Longbow-10 LRM-10s
    2 Intek Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: Whitworth Speciality Manufacturing, Mountain Wolf BattleMechs
Primary Factory: Benjamin (WSM), Alpheratz (MWB)
Communications System: Garret T14
Targeting and Tracking System: Garret D2j

Overview:
With the largest inventory of Whitworths still operable, the DCMS was eager to upgrade them and put them facing the Clans, at least until new designs taking full advantage of newer tecnology could be deployed. Whitworth Speciality Manufacturing had been manufacturing spare parts for the 'Mechs since 3035 and jumped at the contract but were financially struggling to meet the DCMS' demands.

Enter Brandon O'Leary, the businessman who had revitalised the long dormant Mountain Wolf BattleMechs four decades before. O'Leary was working towards re-establishing Mountain Wolf's second factory in the Lyran Commonwealth, but the expertise to reintroduce the extra light engines used in the Star League era Night Hawk that had been built there was more challenging.

Licensing the Whitworth to O'Leary and combining efforts by the design teams brought the redesigned Whitworth's completion forward by at least three years.

Capabilities:
The centre of the new design is the Hermes 240XL, developed by Kallon and already being used by the DCMS for their advanced Spider variants. Rebuilding the Hermes around this engine gave Mountain Wolf the key insights they needed into extra light engines and pushes the Whitworth from its previously mediocre speed to something viable against Clan light and medium 'Mechs.

To save weight for a larger gyro, the head mounted laser was removed, but the armament of the Whitworth was otherwise left unmodified. Two LRM launchers are managable in terms of heat and give the range to hit back at Clan 'Mechs, while the two lasers provide a useful back-up.

One of the smallest changes became the most popular with Mechwarriors: remounting the lasers in the arms allowed the installation of hands, greatly increasing the options of mechwarriors using the Whitworth.

Deployment:
The WTH-2O is currently being built on Alpheratz for the Alliance Military Corps. The factory on Benjamin is currently using its assembly line to refit existing Whitworths with new production scheduled to begin after the DCMS refits are completed.

Variants:
The DCMS has requested a variant on the design which replaces one LRM launcher with a NARC launcher. The WTH-2P also restores the head mounted laser. Because it retains the LRM ammo intended for the original right-torso launcher, it has longer endurance on the battlefield. However, this did require finding space in the torso for the NARC beacons. The AMC has not expressed interest in this variant. The DCMS is proposing to deploy a single WTH-2P alongside other fast moving LRM-equipped designs, such as the WTH-2O, the Wolf Trap and the Grand Dragon.

WTH-2M WHITWORTH

Mass: 40 tons
Chassis: Whitworth Type I
Power Plant: Nissan 200
Cruising Speed: 54 kph
Maximum Speed: 86 kph
Jump Jets: Whitworth Jetlift
   Jump Capacity: 150 meters
Armor: Aldis Heavy Ferro-Fibrous
Armament:
4 Holly LRM-5s
3 Intek Medium Lasers
Manufacturer: Kali Yama Weapons Industries
   Primary Factory: Kalidasa
Communication System: Garret T14
Targeting & Tracking System: Garret D2j

Overview:
Work on the HBK-6K Hunchback really opened up Kali Yama’s markets during the 3rd Marik Civil War especially with the Draconis Combine. Tai-sho Isoroku Kurita searching for ways to improve the much-maligned Whitworth contacted his allies in the Silver Hawk Coalition who jumped at the opportunity almost immediately. Guardian Hestor Hepburn-Marik realized that while the design was not popular in the Free Worlds League it was with mercenaries fighting in their power struggle. Executives from Kali Yama looking to enhance their bottom line were quick to agree directing their design team to research ways to improve the Whitworth. Recognizing that they could utilize components either leftover from the Hunchback’s upgrade or lostech items from that very same project only sped their efforts along. The first refitted models of the WTH-2M walked out of Kalidasan Mech Yards in late 3053.

Capabilities:
Designers first replaced the two Longbow-10 LRM launchers with four Holly LRM-5 racks in typical Marik fashion. These fairly common missile systems manufactured by Holly Industries of Emris IV matched twin Longbow-10s performance and saved two tons. Replacing the eight tons of Durallex Light armor with seven tons of Aldis Heavy Ferro-Fibrous used on the new HBK-6K enhanced this forty-ton BattleMech protection even further. With this space designers swapped out the undersized LTV160 Fusion Engine with the Nissan 200. This larger power plant from the old HBK-4G Hunchback, which Kali Yama is also retrofitting at a break neck pace, allows the Whitworth to reach speeds of 86 kph. Finally, another Whitworth Jetlifter was mounted in the center torso which increased jump mobility to 150 meters corresponding with its greater ground speed. Much of the rest remained the same with the other internals like the orignal chassis, the Garret brand electronic systems, and three supporting Intek Medium Lasers not even being touched. While most were thrilled with this upgrade package some are no doubt disappointed the lack of torso mounted CASEs to prevent horrific ammo explosions and safeguard Mechwarriors. Even with this notable drawback there has been a great deal of enthusiasm for the new WTH-2M Whitworth.

Deployment:
Initially sold to the Dieron Regulars and various mercenaries who see this Whitworth as the best upgrade over the standard WTH-2. Solid performance reports did indeed boost Kali Yama’s refit business which has become center around this ‘Mech. Wide scale retrofitting eventually brought this BattleMech into the Silver Hawk Irregulars and the 31st Marik Militia who use it as a Medium Fire Support asset. Recently the WTH-2M has been teamed with the new HBK-6SN Hunchback in Coalition units where these Long- and Short-Range Missile Boats complement each other well on the battlefield.

First time/long time.  I ran into something like this a long time ago and it has stuck with me ever since.  Took me a bit to figure out the fluff but hopefully it works.

Type: WTH-0K Whitworth
Tech Base: Inner Sphere
Production: Draconis Combine (Whitworth Specialty Manufacturing)

When Whitworth Specialty Manufacturing was incorporated in 3035, it was originally billed as a manufacturer of spare parts for the Draconis Combine’s existing Whitworth ‘Mechs.  Many of the rugged, mobile little support ‘Mechs had survived the rigors of the Succession Wars, despite the manufacturer, Whitworth Company of Dieron, having been destroyed during the Amaris Civil War.  However, there were constant rumors about the new company having ComStar backing, and certainly the Dragon saw WSM as a convenient method for testing a variety of design concepts as Whitworth ‘field refits’ throughout the late 3030s and the 3040s.

One such ‘field refit’ was the -0K, very clearly inspired by the infamous Black Whitworth terror ‘Mechs fielded by the Amaris Dragoons.  The refit was actually rather extensive, far more than a simple field refit, as it involved replacing the LTV 160 fusion engine of the original Whitworth, for a Nissan 200 engine of rather mysterious provenance, equipped with a full set of the new “freezer” double heat sinks.  Although the particular model and make is common in the Federated Suns (as the motive power of their Centurion and Enforcer lines), it is unlikely at best that the Suns would be the supplier.  There is speculation that Osaka Heavy Metrics has been contracted to produce the new engines, as they had both the design specs and production rights as part of their defunct Kiso line, but it is also possible that the engines are being shipped out of Terra via Comstar.  There are also hints that Luthien Armor Works may instead be producing the engines, possibly intended as part of a new design that may shortly be debuted. [ed: this is the Daimyo]

The Nissan 200 gives the -0K much greater closing speed, important as the long-range missile racks have been pulled and replaced by short-range missiles: two SRM-4 racks per side torso, each pair fitting quite neatly into the mounting brackets for the LRM-10 of the original design.  The -0K retains a two-ton ammo capacity, with one ton in each side torso, and fits a fifth Whitworth Jetlift jumpjet into the center torso for a 150 meter jump capability.  Of the original’s three medium lasers, it replaces the left arm laser with a Flamer, and drops the head-mounted laser entirely.  With no long-range firepower, the -0K relies rather more heavily on its relatively heavy armor (for a 40t ‘Mech), but can devastate conventional forces with broadsides of sixteen inferno missiles, backed by a ‘Mech flamer.  It is also proving surprisingly useful against battle-armored forces, with its reasonable top speed and heat-based armament.

Welcome to the contests fabulousorcboy!

I was just considering a SRM version myself but mine is altogether different. ;)

Keep those Whits coming gang!!

Although not generally liked by MechWarriors of the DCMS, the Whitworth is a capable medium-weight design. In the wake of the War of 3039, Takashi Kurita and Theodore Kurita ordered the DCMS to begin work (with the aid and assistance of ComStar engineers and technicians) on upgrades for a number of different BattleMechs.

Normally, the Whitworth would not have been among them, but Whitworth Specialty Manufacturing (based on Benjamin) had long sought a contract to build new Whitworths for the DCMS rather than repairing and overhauling older units.  Although the DCMS bureaucracy resisted this idea for nearly a decade, in the wake of the Clan Invasion, Theodore Kurita fast-tracked their concept of the WTH-2K.

This new vision of the Whitworth would utilize a Nissan 200 Extra Light Fusion engine, allowing the 'Mech to attain greater speeds on the ground (54.0 kilometers per hour walking and 86.4 kph running), while a fifth Whitworth Liftjet jump-jet was added (placed in the center torso) to increase overall tactical manuverablity on the battlefield.  The Nissan 200XL would be built on Luthien (and later used on the Blackjack-O OmniMech) by Luthien Armor Works.

The original eight tons of Durallex Light standard armor would be replaced by 7.5 tons of New Samarkand Royal ferro-fibrous armor plating, giving these new Whitworths slightly great protection than the standard units already in service.

All three Intek Medium Lasers were retained, as was the chassis (Whitworth Type I), communications system (Garret T14), and targeting & tracking system (Garret D2j).

The original Longbow LRM-10 launchers and ammunition bins were removed, however, and replaced with Thunderstroke-L LRM-5 launchers (two each in the right and left torso), each launcher fed by a ton of ammunition.  While the total number of missiles capable of being launched remained the same as older Whitworths, ammunition endurance was doubled.  To keep an ammunition explosion from gutting the 'Mech and rendering it unsalvagable, CASE was added to both the right and left torsos.

Having a spare half-ton remaining, WSM installed a Magna Small Laser (manufactured on Mizar for the Samurai Aerospace Fighter).

While original concepts called for standard heat sinks, Theodore Kurita himself ordered the newly developed double-strength heat sinks to be incorporated into the design.  This decision allowed the new Whitworth to dissipate the majority (but not all) of the heat generated by weapons and movement, even on a jumping Alpha Strike.

A single variant is also produced (in limited numbers) by WSM.  The WTH-2K-2 removes two Thunderstroke-L LRM-5 launchers (and their ammunition bins) and replaces them with a pair of Thunderstroke SRM-4 launchers, each with a ton of ammunition.  Although hotter running than the WTH-2K, the -2K-2 is deadly in close range, while still maintaing a bit of a long-range sting.

Although not in production, a third variant has emerged during the Clan Invasion.  Tai-sa Ijogi Waters of the 2nd An Ting Legion ordered one of the Whitworths in production be modified for his own use.  Designed for combat in urban areas, the WTH-2K-3 is based on the WTH-2K-2, but removes the last two Thunderstroke-L LRM launchers for two more Thunderstroke SRM launchers.  In addition, head-mounted Intek Medium Laser has been replaced with a Zippo Flamer.  Only one of these 'Mech was produced, and Tai-sa Waters was killed in action against Clan Smoke Jaguar before it could be delivered.  Having already constructed the 'Mech, WSM subsequently sold the WTH-2K-3 to the DCMS where it was delivered to the 2nd Legion of Vega.  Although quite hot running, this 'Mech is exceptionally deadly on an urban battlefield.

Very nice masterarminas!

A very modular approach by the DCMS with the LRM-5 and SRM-4 becoming almost an Omni Missile Rack. Both systems are identical critical space and tonnage wise. If they could be swapped rapidly this 'OmniWorth' would become perhaps a proto-modular response to the Clans. Fantastic job as usual.

Overview:
This Whitworth has been the family Mech of the Aoyama family since before the
fall of the Star League. Over the years this Mech has gone through numerous
variations and has time has gone by nothing, aside from a couple of fasteners,
survive from the original Mech. This current refit is a result of the damage
suffered at the hands of the Smoke Jaguars. Tai-i Ringo Aoyama barely survived
her encounter.

After her battles with Jaguars she wanted more hitting power than her
grandfather's version gave her. Her first option was to mount an ER PPC in
place of her grandfather's LRM-15 launcher. However, nearly all of the ER PPC
production within the Combine was going to new production or refitting the
DCMS' Warhammers and Marauders. Seeking another option, she finallysettled on
the Binary Laser Cannons coming out of the Free Worlds League. While the Blazer
lacked the range of the ER PPC, it had a higher damage potential.

A new Nissan 200XL fusion engine was fitted to the Whitworth which increased
its top speed to 85 kph, a necessity when fighting the Clans. Another new
feature is the application of lostech ferro-fibrous armor to the Mech's frame.
A total of 7.5 tons has been mounted giving the Mech excellent for its size.

In addition to Blazer, this Whitworth retains, though in different locations.
two the original medium lasers while replacing the third with a medium pulse
laser. A TAG unit has been added in anticipation of the broader use of Arrow IV
systems within the DCMS.

Another interesting feature of this Whitworth is the addition of hands to the
arms. Tai-i Aoyama found that the lack of hands was detrimental when fighting
Clan battle armor. It was near impossible to remove the Toads without hands.
This required major modifications to both arms of the Mech. The right arm is
converted from the PPC bearing arm of the Panther, while the lower left arm is
borrowed from the Phoenix Hawk.

Tai-i Aoyama is currently awaiting re-assignement after recovering from her most
injuries. She has recently re-qualified as a Mechwarrior and has been training
as much as the local commanders will allow her to.

The engineers at the facility that performed the refit have submitted the
design to their superiors with only one modification being the removal of the
TAG for upgrading one the remaining medium lasers to a pulse model.

The WTH-2D is an attempted by the AFFS to further improve  the WTH-2 Whitworth.  While the WTH-2 was considered an adequate upgrade of the old Whitworth, featuring improved accuracy at the expense of short range firepower, the design did nothing to solve one of the major flaws of the Whitworth, it's limited battlefield endurance.  The WTH-2D seeks to solve this problem by replacing the old LTV 160 engine with the the Miata 200XL engine that was developed for Kai Allard-Liao's custom Centurion - Yen-Lo-Wang.

The new engine not only increases the speed of the Whitworth, but it also frees up mass for 2 additional tons of ammunition.  The other major change is the replacement of the old Durallex Light armor with Star Guard Ferro-Fibrous Armor.  While carrying 1 ton less armor then the WTH-2, the Ferro-Fibrous armor provides nearly identical protection.  This allowed the design team to replace the Whitworth Jetluft Jumpjets with Pitban LFT-50s increasing the jump range to 150 meters.

Due to the increased speed, jump capability and firepower the new Whitworth has earned the nickname of the Double Valkyrie among mechwarriors.

The Whitworth WTH-3D was developed by Johnston Industries as an alternative to Kallon Industries WTH-2D.  As with the WTH-2D, the 3D model also switches to an Extra Light Fusion Engine, in this case the LTV 160XL developed for the LCT-4D Locust.  Rather then increase the speed of the mech, the design team chose to save weight, allowing for a more powerful weapons array.

The Longbow-10 LRM Launchers have been removed and replaced with the Valiant Arbalest LRM 15 Launcher, increasing firepower by 50%.  In order to make the new weapons fit, the designers had to remove 1 ton of armor.  By switching to Star Guard Ferro-Fibrous armor, they were able to provide nearly the same protection as the WTH-1.  Unfortunately the bulky Ferro-Fibrous armor precluded them from increasing the ammo supply.  As a result the mech only has 8 rounds for each of its LRM Launchers.  Should the mech enter production (as opposed to just refitting existing mechs), it has been suggested that the mech could use an Endo Steel Chassis to save mass for additional ammunition.

Developed from a Solaris 7 Arena Mech built by Omnitech Industries, the Whitworth-2S is designed to perform as an Elemental Hunter-Killer. Armed with an ER Large Laser and brace of Medium Pulse Lasers to handle the onslaught of Elementals An SRM-6 and LRM-5 serve as the backup to the laser battery. The Mech is to be built at the Edasich Mobility Systems factory near the Edasich Motors facility on Aur.

The WTH-7D was created in response to Duke Sandoval's complaints that the AFFC was stripping the Combine border to dangerous levels in order to send more troops to fight the Clan Invasion.  Along with large numbers of Urbanmechs (which were converted into the UM-RD variant) the First Prince sent a number of mechs that were otherwise slated for decommissioning.  Among those mechs were large quantities of the WTH-1 Whitworth.  While considered better then the Urbanmech, the Duke was upset as he was losing many heavy and assault mechs and was being forced to replace them with light and medium models.

After looking at several different options, the Duke and his team settled on an upgrade that was proposed by the engineers at the Robinson Standard Battleworks.  Having already proven successful with their upgrade to the Urbanmech, they now took on the challenge of improving the Whitworth.  Their final design, radically altered the weapons to create a hard hitting mech.  Stripping off the LRMs, the replaced them with a pair of arm mounted PPCs.  In an effort to speed production, the arm mounts were modeled on those of the Warhammer, this resulted in the mech acquiring the nickname of the WhitHammer.  The arm medium lasers were relocated to the torsos and supplemented by a Holly 4 Tube SRM Launcher mounted over the right shoulder. The left shoulder features a high power searchlight similar to the Warhammer.  Unlike the Warhammer the search light is not tied into the tracking system and so is of limited value in combat.  The main reason for including the searchlight was to make the Whitworth look like a Warhammer, and hopefully encourage enemy forces to retreat.

In order to save mass of all of these upgrades the design team made a number of changes to the mech, beyond removing the LRM launchers.  Similar to Johnston Industries WTH-3D, the engine has been replaced with the LTV 160XL which is used on the LCT-4D Locust. The Durallex Light armor was replaced with StarGuard Ferro-Fibrous armor, this allowed the design team to remove 1 ton of armor which providing nearly identical protection.  The head mounted Intek Medium Laser was also removed during the upgrade.  The primary reason for this was to reduce the power draw on the engine, which had greatly increased due to the new energy based weapons array.

The final change was to upgrade the heat dissipation system.  With the high heat generated by the Particle Cannons, the design team switched to double strength heat sinks. Even so the mech has a tendency to run hot and mechwarriors are encourage to stagger their fire.

The new Whitworth has been deployed with a number of Draconis March Militia regiments where it has been met with great enthusiasm.  While the mech is not heavy mech, it provides quite the punch.  The mechwarriors assigned to the new Whitworth have been anxious to try their new mechs in actual combat.

Didn't mean to do another one- but the more I thought about it the more I thought this should have been a TC mech (partly inspired by the idea that the TDF acquired lots of Whitworths when they were deccomissioned in the mid 3050s).  So here is a somewhat similar version.

WTH-4T

Targeting and Tracking System: Garret D2j

Type: WTH-4T Whitworth
Technology Base: Inner Sphere

The WTH-4T is a surprising new version of the Whitworth that has been seen operating in the Taurian Concordat.  The Concordat has operated a small number of WTH-Cs that were purchased from the Magistracy of Canopus during the First Succession War as well has a number of WTH-1s that were captured from the Federated Suns. Following the AFFC's Future Victor 49 excerises, Protector Calderon began looking at ways to improve the capabilities of the TDF.  While most of the efforts were directed at relatively worthless fortifications, there was an effort to improve the Concordat's mech forces.  Project Light Deception looked at trying to make a medium mech with the firepower of a heavy mech, in an effort to offset the Concordat's numerical inferiority.  After looking at, and discarding, several different ideas  the engineers came around to an upgrade of the Whitworth.  After looking at the WTH-C with it's single PPC and LRM 10 Launcher, one of the engineers questioned if they could replace the other LRM with a PPC.  After several attempts they managed to come up with a working prototype.

The designers started by removing the right torso LRM launcher and replacing it will a PPC.  Unlike the WTH-C, the designers did not have to remove the arm mounted medium lasers. Due to the extensive changes that were made to the mech, they were able to redesign the torso to reroute the power feeds for the lasers. The design team did remove the head laser to free up room for other changes.

In order to cope with the high heat output of the PPCs, the designers added 2 heat sinks and switched to double strength models.  This helps keep the mech cool in most situations.  The Whitworth Jetlift jump jets were removed from the mech to save mass for the additional heat sinks.  The other major change was the replacement of the old armor with new Durallex Light Ferro-Fibrous armor.  While weighing a ton less then the original armor plating, it provides nearly identical protection.

The new mech performed well during trials and the TDF has decided to modify all WTH-1s to this standard.  The upgrades are taking place at the Laconic Arsenal.  It remains to be determined if the WTH-Cs will be upgraded to this standard or left as they are.

I have no idea for fluff but would be interesting to see a design that actually totally redesigns the 'Mech to be a AC model, considering the Whitworth was a rifle it would have made more sense for this name to be used for a design with one.

WTH-2D WHITWORTH

Mass: 40 tons
Chassis: Whitworth Type I
Power Plant: Nissan 200 XL
Cruising Speed: 54 kph
Maximum Speed: 86 kph
Jump Jets: Whitworth Jetlift
   Jump Capacity: 150 meters
Armor: StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous with CASE
Armament:
4 Holly Mark II Streak SRM-2s
1 Intek Medium Laser
2 Martell Medium Pulse Lasers
Manufacturer: Corean Enterprises
   Primary Factory: New Avalon
Communication System: Garret T14
Targeting & Tracking System: Garret D2j

Overview:
Efforts to maximize the combat efficiency of BattleMechs with lostech began prior to the Clan Invasion at the New Avalon Institute of Science. One such example was undertaken by Doctor Laurence Whitlock following his graduation from the NAIS. His father was a member of Team Banzai killed during the battle of Northwind piloting the family's Whitworth. Restoring this war machine to operation was Laurence's passion and optimizing its performance became his obsession. Approaching the Banzais, as well as his commanders in the NAIS Cadet Cadre, Laurence proposed a can't miss project that would give birth to the WTH-2D.

Capabilities:
Dcotor Whitlock utilized the classic four-ton Whitworth Type I chassis and powered it with the new Nissan 200 XL Engine boosting its top speed to 86 kilometers per hour.  This allowed the addition of a fifth center torso mounted Whitworth Jetlifter enabling it to jump one hundred and fifty meters at a time. The key to his entire concept was the replacement of the 'Mechs entire arsenal, exept the head mounted Intek Medium Laser, with four Holly Mark II Streak SRM-2s and twin Martell Medium Pulse Lasers. These Star League era weapons gave this Whitworth unrivaled short-range accuracy which is devastating in close quarter combat like in urban centers. Varying ranges for the Pulses and the no lock no fire nature of the Streaks mitigate the effects a jumping Alpha Strikes could have on its ten Double Heat Sinks. However, the potential firepower that this model can rain down on opponents is truly impressive. Finally, seven and a half tons of StarGuard CIV Ferro-Fibrous with CASE from Valkyrie provided maximum protection.

Deployment:
The Whitlocker, as Dr. Whitlock called his personal creation, proved to be an effective proof of concept 'Mech spurring limited production. Retrofitting of existing Whitworth chassis is being carried out by Corean Enterprises in association with NAIS and Banzai Weapons Design Company on New Avalon. Completed WTH-2D units have gone to Team Banzai and the NAIS Cadet Cadre where they have been well received.

Here you will the Kai family.

Extract from The Might of the Pillar of Jade or how the Combine economy managed to help in the fight against the Clans, Doons School of Business Press, Donegal, 3053

Whitworth Specialty Manufacturing (WSM) is a strange bird. Incorporated in 3035 on Benjamin and focusing on producing replacement parts for and some refitting/upgrading kits for the maligned Whitworth, no one understood how this company could survive on a niche market with less than 300 Whitworths operating in the Inner Sphere at that time.
Rumours spread that ComStar had something to do with it and was pouring money into this company but nothing could be proven and it remained on Benjamin focusing on the retrofit of Whitworths keeping them alive and in fighting conditions and proposing to everyone who could afford it the reworking of the faulty actuator system in the legs and hips.
In 3050, following the Clan Invasion, the company introduced the WTH-2, a straight forward upgrade that was unfortunately a mistake as it dropped two thirds of the close range firepower for some improvement of the LRM thanks to the use of Artemis IV Fire Control System. The feedback from the units was  terrible as the Clans were able to use their extra speed to get at closer range, leaving the newly upgraded Whitworth vulnerable.

This is when Whitworth Specialty Manufacturing decided to go for a bold plan. They would go a different road and produce the WTH-2 Kai (modified in Japanese), proposing newest and more efficient package, able to appeal to the few Houses units still using Whitworth as well and perhaps more interestingly to the Periphery and mercenary owners of this ‘Mech. If sales were enough and if the reputation of the new versions of the Whitworth was high enough, perhaps WSM would be able to be sponsored by the Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery to build a factory to produce more advanced versions of the Whitworth.

This resulted in two generations of retrofit for the Whitworth produced at a year of interval. The WHT-2 Kai 0X were simpler upgrades (that all involved the addition of CASE, meaning still heavy work to upgrade them) meant for an easier maintenance and repair time and thus perfect for the Periphery or for not top-of-the-line units while the next step the WHT-2 Kai 1X brought things like Double Heat Sinks. But both benefited from an upgrade in terms of software bringing them up-to-date both in terms of efficiency and protection.

Since things were to go quickly, WSM turned to suppliers from the Draconis Combine only to help increase its stockpile and this turned out to be a wise move as in a few weeks, every single upgrade kit had been bought but in less than a month after that, Whitworth Specialty Manufacturing was back on tracks.

The WHT-2 Kai 01 is a WTH-1 with few twists and aimed specifically at the Draconis Combine with the inclusion of a C3 Computer Slave. This new piece of technology and the inclusion of CASE were made possible through the use of 4 LRM-5 instead of the classical LRM-10, giving it the same number of tubes, even if the damage is more spread.
The WHT-2 Kai 01 was seen team-working with the newest Panthers from the DCMS forming part of a C3 unit and managing to easily tag team with their weapons being complementary between the heavy concentrated punch and the more spread one.

The WHT-2 Kai 02 is a more flexible ‘Mech with 2 Small Pulse Lasers being added as a last line of defence against Elementals in restricted grounds. This change was meant after further analysis of the battleroms and the importance of urban battlefields to defend the Inner Sphere against the Clans. This addition was done by dropping the C3 Slave and replacing the standard armour by a Ferro-Fibrous one (the loss of 2% of the total protection was seen as something worth the added firepower and extra efficiency). The only complain is that this ‘Mech can run hot if no extra care is taken in selecting the firing weapons.
In spite of this, this kit has proven popular among the Periphery realms as they had been looking for something low cost to beef up their defences against the Elementals and for those having some Whitworths this option was seen as the best one.

The WHT-2 Kai 03 earned quickly an unofficial nickname, the “Half” as an engineer looking at its weapons joked that it was “half a Crusader” and even if it was not intended, she was right. With a SRM-6, 3 LRM-15, it packs half the missile firepower of this classical fire-support machine. However, it still has two of the original Medium Lasers adding their firepower when danger gets close in. An 11th Heat Sink was added to help cool it a little. Those looking for flexibility are enjoying the degree of freedom provided by the “Half”.

The WHT-2 Kai 11 uses Ferro-Fibrous armour like the Kai 02 and thanks to it adds some protection  against Elementals in the form of a Small Pulse Laser. The use of Double Heat Sinks allows it to fire without having to worry too much for its heat.

The WHT-2 Kai 111 upgrade turns the Whitworth into a pure fire-support ‘Mech with 4 LRM-5 and one ER Large Laser in the Left Arm. However, no extra firepower is there should the fight come to close combat.

The WHT-2 Kai 12 is a “simple” upgrade upgrading the Heat Sinks to Double ones to help deal with the heat generated by the weapons. However this was only possible through a complete rework of the internals of the ‘Mech.
However as soon as it went out, the Kai 12 became an instant hit, replacing the Kai 02 in the orders.

The WHT-2 Kai 13 upgrades the firepower of the Kai 03 thanks to the combo of Ferro-Fibrous armour and Double Heat Sinks (bringing the total number back to 10), allowing it to replace the SRM-6 by twin SRM-4 and adding a Small Pulse Laser.

The Kai series did much to restore confidence in the capacity of WSM to really improve the Whitworth and the use of several of these retrofited ‘Mechs in the Periphery against Pirate units did much too for the communication of the company.
However due to its focus on a niche market, future remains uncertain for Whitworth Specialty Manufacturing. It is unknown if they will manage to thrive or will dwell into obscurity and be forgotten.

The WTH-2K is the latest variant of the Whitworth that has been introduced by Whitworth Specialty Manufacturing. Established in 3035 to supply replacement parts for the Combine's Whitworths the company has recently expanded into full refits of the Whitworth.  The -2K was developed to provide the Combine with a long range sniper unit.

The extensive refit begins by removing all of the Whitworth's weaponry and armor with the exception of the left arm mounted Medium Laser.  The designers also removed the jump jets, considering them of limited value in a mech that is intended to find a safe firing position and snipe enemy units.

The refit began by replacing the old LTV 160 engine with an extra light model.  It is uncertain where Whitworth Specialty Manufacturing is getting the XL engines from.  Some rumors claim Comstar is aiding the company.  The new engines consume most the space that the old LRM launchers and their ammo took up in the torso, but in the process save enough weight for the other changes.

The main weapon of the Whitworth is a Dragon's Fire Gauss Rifle, giving the mech a strong punch at long ranges.  To aid in improving the accuracy of the weapon, the Whitworth carries a C3 slave in place of the head mounted medium laser.  This allows it to use it's lance mates targeting systems as close up spotters, greatly improving accuracy.  The only other weapon carried by the Whitworth is the left arm Intek Medium Laser.

In addition to the C3 Slave, the Whitworth carries a Guardian ECM Suite.  This helps to hide the mech while it is sniping at targets on the battlefield.  As the old Garret T14 Com System could not handle the ECM and C3 systems, it was replaced with the Sipher CommCon SCU-4.  The final change made to the Whitworth was to replace the armor with 7 and half tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor.  While slightly lighter then the original armor plating, the New Samarkand Royal Ferro-Fibrous armor provides superior protection.

Whitworth is currently converting many of the Combine's Whitworths to this model.

Well, I'm just upset that I couldn't get the fluff done for the trio I posted earlier. In that group was the 1st use of a C3 master for these challenges. Too bad that they are now out of the running.

With thirty-one different designs presented in sixteen overall concepts by seven designers the Whitworth contest was indeed a spirited one. I do have to say looking back at it all that missile carriers which embodied the Whitworth BattleTechness were higher finishers. I’d like to thank everyone who participated and hope to see you all back for the Hatchetman as well as the many more optimizations we have to come. Without further ado let’s get done to the review of the Whitworths presented herein, hope you enjoy!

DISQUALIFIED

16. WTH-2AC & WTH-2ACa (Abele)
These LB 10-X Autocannon armed Whitworths done by Abele at the instigation of Bradshaw are interesting for certain. I could certainly see them as an individual or testbed creation created by the DCMS during the Clan Invasion to deal with Elementals. I prefer the 2Aca (Fusion Engine) version as it is simpler, cheaper, and durable although the Medium Pulses of the XL version are tempting. Probably more so if it had a C3 Slave which many Kurita submissions lacked this contest somewhat surprisingly. Alas with no fluff these big gun ballistics which replace the standard missile boat has got to be disqualified. I do have to say that is difficult to imagine the Whitworth as anything other than a missile boat to be completely honest but I suppose anything is possible and the historical rifle context is nonetheless interesting.

15. WTH-2KA & WTH-2KB (Abele)
These high-tech Draconis Whitworths designed or influenced by Uncle Chandy and Hachiman Taro would have been interesting competition if completed. Both models were to be new builds presumably with EndoSteel chassis which used a Nissan 200 XL (5/8) to up the speed while adding another jump jet (5) to improve its mobility. In the same vein they incorporated ten Double Heat Sinks improving the dissipation rates for the Whitworth dramatically. Cloaked in eight and half tons of standard armor (136 factor) these machines featured near maximum protection for their forty-ton weight class. I liked how both had C3 Slaves as well which would be a major advantage for DCMS forces at this time. Not sure I liked the single battery of the LRM-15 for the 2KA but it does make some degree of sense with an Artemis IV FCS attached. Something like a Streak SRM-2 on the other torso might have really caught my attention but not bad design wise. The 2KB is my favorite of the two for its standard Whitworth dual missile battery and mixing the two isn’t a bad idea either. However, without fluff I can’t qualify you to the contest – sorry bud!

PASSABLE

14. WTH-2K (Irose)
The GaussWorth as I call was inspired by Bradshaw's call to produce a 'rifled' Whitworth after its real-life legacy but to me its BattleTech story is hard to overcome. It is difficult to see this 'Mech as anything but a missile boat even though Irose gives it his best shot here. Using a 160 XL Engine while dropping the LRMs, Jump Jets, and two Medium Lasers allows this design to mount a single Gauss Rifle. While the idea of having a slow roaming big gun on the battlefield is intriguing and perhaps even inspiring to some (I'm looking at you Hollander) it just doesn't do it for me because of the huge sacrifices made. I'd love it if it had jump jets for a bit of sniper mobility but that got squeezed out. The addition of a C3 Slave and Guardian ECM Suite are nice additions I gotta say but this Mech feels like a custom ride for a notable warrior rather than a true Whitworth variant. Nice try though!

13. WTH-4T (Irose)
I think this model suffered from part Whitworth Periphery overload and part non-missile boat Whitworth for me. Not a bad design or concept at all especially given your excellent Canopian entry which this is sort of an extension of but I'd like a little bit more foundation. Give the Magistracy a little more time to establish themselves as Whitworth users which I think works and you could certainly see this design flourish. Plus, what happened to the canon Whitworth (its widespread decommissioning) didn't really happen here in the Salient Horizon setting thereby cutting the number of available chassis for modification. Also, this one was a lot like the WhitHammer so for now I am going to say no to this submission even though the design itself is pretty solid. Hope you understand!

12. WTH-1 Ringo & 2R (Abele)
Keeping to his Blazer promise Abele gives us this model which gets away from the Whitworth's missile boating. The fluff is solid with a tale of a Draconis Mechwarrior and ironically her WTH-1 Ayoma which was more of a true Whitworth IMO. I will not judge that and I can see the BlazerWorth as a unique response to the Clan Invasion. Desperate times equal desperate measures so I can certainly see the Ringo as a one-off custom model on the Clan front. However, as a larger variant I just don't see it especially because there were other Kurita models which I thought were better. Good fluff though and solid design.

CONTENDERS

11. WTH-3D (Irose)
While I like the idea of twin LRM-15s on the old Whitworth by using a 160 XL from advanced Davion Locusts it just falls short. Reducing secondary armament to a single Medium Laser is bad enough but both these large launchers having only one ton of ammunition a piece is certainly a no no. Lacking endurance and speed I just don't care for this advanced Federated Suns variant but I did find it appropriate here. Perhaps if you could somehow justify a new build with EndoSteel instead of Ferro-Fibrous which could free up more tonnage for ammo or secondary weapons but truthfully, I doubt even that would be enough to save this endeavor. Unfortunately, the concept just doesn't work for me.

10. WTH-2 Kai series (Ice Hellion)
These seven Kurita entries are a wide variety of Whitworth upgrades which run the gambit of possibilities. They all continue to use the standard chassis, the LTV 160 Fusion Engine, and four jump jets (4/6/4) but from there they branch off. My favorite is probably the 111 with four LRM-5s and an ER Large for pretty solid fire support but I also like the 01 model as well with its C3 Slave Computer. The 03 is interesting with three LRM-5s and an SRM-6 providing a nice split in missile batteries. I question the relevance of the 02, 11, 12, and 13 models which all feature Small Pulse Lasers to ostensibly battle Elementals. Not sure how effective they would be because of their limited range, lite firepower, and the low speed of the Whitworth. I suppose such point defense does have its advantages by why not just go for more Medium Lasers? Or in the case of the 02 why not go with Medium Pulses in the arms anyway as they perfectly cover the LRM minimum range. Not bad overall but I felt that more focus may have led to better results here. Unfortunately, you got beat by other better Draconis designs here. Good tries though bud.

9. WTH-2S & WTH-2S7 (Abele)
This Elemental hunter-killer developed from a Solaris 7 duelist certainly is a very interesting concept for the Whitworth. This new build made by Edasich Mobility Systems on Aur, which appears to be an extension of their engine factory, is a cool angle in itself and one that I really am intrigued by. Only problem is you go away from their Engines for a Nissan 200 XL when I would gone to one of their own (existing or not). I do like the speed improvement (5/8) which correspondingly increases the mobility (5) of the Whitworth. Got no problem using the regular Whitworth chassis either as it would give this Motor company time to develop something more sophisticated in the future. Seven tons of ferro-fibrous armor (125 factor) isn’t bad at all and Double Heat Sinks do seem to be in order. I also like the mixed long range (ER Large and LRM-5) paired with the short range (SRM-6 and two Medium Pulses) even though it has a high heat potential. Bracket firing is no doubt in order here which is a change from the all short-range Solaris 7 model which looks nasty. Would love to have a pilot’s name who uses it possibly sponsored by Edasich would make for a good story.

NEAR MISSES

8. WTH-2D (Irose)
Splitting the LRM-10s in favor of multiple LRM-5s was the way to go for me but this Davion variant dared to be different. Using the 200 XL Engine manufactured for the Yen Lo Wang was certainly an interesting take on obtaining this advanced power plant for the Whitworth. Modifying in the Capellan March would then make some degree of sense and the general boost in mobility and speed is certainly worth it. The armament is very canon with only one Medium Laser remaining thanks to Artemis IV FCS linked to the LRM batteries in true FedCom fashion. Sticking with ten single Heat Sinks is probably the way to go as these weapons don't generate a lot of heat. Seven tons of ferro-fibrous armor provide pretty solid protection as well. Very nice job and nearly good enough for the winner’s circle but ultimately, I liked one other Davy design better.

7. WHT-2O & 2P (drakensis)
On its face this Draconis-Outworlds project here makes sense but such a technically advanced model? Weaving in Mountain Wolf BattleMechs so you could cross a Night Hawk with a Whitworth was clever. With the 240 XL Engine you easily outpace the rest of the competition here. The Jump Jets didn't get increased from four and I am okay with that as it has enough mobility to enhance its operations. Ten Single Heat Sinks can still be kept thanks to the twin LRM-10s and two Medium Lasers. Hell, I even like the fact that you added hands to this design which absolutely crossed my mind. I wish there was more ammo though and I think LRM-5 gimmick could have really worked here. I don't care for LRM carriers with a NARC In regards to the 2P and here again the LRM-5 swap for SRM-4 could have worked. Honestly, the Outworlds Alliance also held you back a bit too as I find it hard to believe that such an advanced model could have been put together here so quickly. Thank you for such an interesting and speedy concept though.

6. WTH-OK (fabulousorcboy)
This Kurita short range variant was absolutely fantastic reaching back to the Black Whitworths of the Amaris Dragoons and reminding me a lot of my 2M concept but just with short range missiles. Upgrading to a standard 200 Fusion Engine really makes a lot of sense perhaps more so with this up-close weaponry. Your component sourcing was also spot on eluding to near future designs quite appropriately. The design and fluff are both excellent but I am very sorry to say you got beat out by one other Draconis Whitworth. However, what I'm happy to report is this variant will live on as part of another winning design. I hope to see you designing here again because you did a very nice job your first time out.

WINNERS

5. WTH-2D (Takiro)
Narrowly beating out WTH-2D by Irose for the top overall Davion spot is my Streak SRM version put together by Team Banzai and NAIS. This super accurate urban combat master would be a deadly opponent for even the Clans in close confines and could serve as a valuable test bed for new technologies like the InnerSphere Streak SRM-6 for example. I do have to say the original concept featured more goodies but alas I just didn't have the tonnage for it all as the design work progress. As a result, this was my least favorite Whitworth that I designed but still a pretty solid high-tech missiler. Given its firepower and accuracy I think it is appropriately placed at fifth.

4. WHT-2M (Takiro)
My first and favorite Whitworth concept bought this BattleMech to the Free Worlds League and Mercenaries at large. Tying into my Hunchback upgrade, and giving me the idea for another, the 2M is a capable fire support variant for Marik forces fighting in their Third Civil War. Only Ferro-Fibrous and Double Heat Sinks make it a lostech design which even with its larger leftover Hunchback 200 Engine it is cheap. I'd love to use fabulousorcboy's WTH-OK as a variant for this model especially based on masterarminas' design. Swapping some or all of the LRM-5s for SRM-4s would make for an even better variant. But as are this simple two LRM-5 downgrades for each LRM-10 combined with the replacement of the 160 LTV with the Nissan 200 is a winner to me.

3. WTH-C & 2C (Irose)
These Canopian Level 1 and 2 designs derived from the BattleTech Shattered Dawn original are fantastic in their story and design. I could certainly see the Magistracy engaging in such industrial espionage to obtain the Whitworth during the Star League era and just now coming back to it following the Clan Invasion. I think it works and would expand this BattleMech's proliferation into the Periphery plus there is the design itself. Simply replacing one of the LRM-10s and a Medium Laser with a PPC is pretty freaking solid and the 2C just takes it to another level. I could certainly see this Mech involved in the liberation of Canopian worlds from the Free Worlds League yoke during the 3rd Marik Civil War. Nicely done for the bronze!

2. WTH-7D (Irose)
The most innovative design of the contest was the so-called WhitHammer from the Davion Draconis March. Built to mimic the larger heavy BattleMech right down to the addition of a spotlight it certainly fits the region's needs at this time. While the 160 XL Engine is a bit advanced for the Old Duke and Robinson I could see it worked in because of some advanced Locust being built at this time. This Medium Doppelganger might just scare of some drunken raiders by a well delivered salvo. While other Whitworths who didn't feature missiles (even though this one has an SRM-6 pack) do well in this contest this one is an exception I feel. It really fits the setting and is a pretty clever use of equipment. Silver medal!!

1. WTH-2K series (masterarminas)
The relation between the LRM-5 and SRM-4 was not something I drew at the start of this contest. The way that these three Whitworth variants made use of these two missile systems almost interchangeably makes me think of a proto-OmniMech effort by InnerSphere technicians. Not sure I loved the 200 XL Engine here but with all the goodies you can add (half ton armor, two extra munition tons, and a CASE in each torso) it is pretty hard to argue against. I am sure House Kurita would want to maximize its operational ability in light of the Clan invasion. Only thing I would have liked to have seen which could have improved it overall is a C3 system. Overall though the concept is quite solid and definitely my winner for the Draconis variant of the Whitworth. Gold medal!!!

Congratulations MasterArminas.

Takiro, we each have our own way of playing. For me the defences against Elementals (and infantry) especially with fire-support units are to be done when they are getting too close (ie under the minimal range of the LRM).
We don't have the same approach regarding this part as I look for a flexible weapon that covers the weak part of my designs (but that don't go for überdesigns) while you go for an optimised one (although Medium Pulse Lasers are for me quite useless in their IS incarnation).

A little background on the WTH-4T.  After I designed and posted the -7D I thought about the design some more and realized I didn't like it, more precisely I did not like the XL engine. So I designed another version- PPCs in each arm, medium lasers in the torsos, an SRM 2 in the right torso and 10 DHS that did not use an XL Engine and instead sacrificed the jump jets and some armor.  The I realized the fluff would read just like that of the 7D - down to the WhitHammer name.  So I made some changes and then posted the -4T.  So basically if I had not rushed to post the -7D and thought about it you would have had the Taurian WhitHammer instead.

That said I am not surprised it lost. (If anything I am surprised the -3D made it to a contender.  It was the design that I really wanted to make work but it just fell flat.)
