Since the Official boards are a bucket of fail at the moment, but had the Pantehr as a recent MotW topic, thought I'd start a thread here for people to post their Panthers.

To kick things off, here's a little "Periphery" Panther, based on the PNT-14S, that loses the small cockpit by downgrading the rocket launchers to RL-10s:

Also, because I cannot leave well enough alone, something that's basically a cross between the PNT-8Z Panther and the JR7-A Jenner:  think of it as a Panther using a salvaged Jenner engine, dropping the CT missile launcher to save mass, along with three heat sinks, and downgrading the PPC to a large laser.  At 7/11/4, though, with 6.5 tons of armor, I think that might be workable during the Third Succession War, though.

Here's a couple from one of my older AU fics.



Panther PNT-10V1 & PNT-10V2


Overview:
During the Outreach Conference in 3051, engineers from the Draconis Combine and
Federated Commonwealth compared their proposals to upgrade their 'Mechs to meet
with the Clans.

One of the most controversial points was the DCMS' plans for their Panther
light 'Mechs, in no small part because of the scathing appraisal by Victoria
Steiner-Davion.

Challenged to improve on their work, the Federated Commonwealth heir pulled
together a team of junior officers and returned not one but two proposals to
address her concerns about heat management for the Panther and also
introducting the advanced armour materials now becoming available.

The V1 proposal switched out the PPC for a pulse laser in order to accomodate
the Combine's limits on manufacturing advanced heat-sinks. The loss of range
pushes the Panther into close range engagements in dense terrain, where the
Clans were at less of an advantage.

The V2 completely switches the paradigm, utilising double heatsinks, a larger
fusion engine to support a Lord's Light 2 PPC. Since there's no longer a need
to cover the close range weakness of older PPCs, the short-range missiles are
replaced with a pair of long-range missile launchers, rendering this variant a
skirmisher that can at least keep pace with the heavy cavalry 'Mechs of the
Clans.

You know, I'm really liking both of your Panthers with LRMs.  Another fav of mine I can't take credit for is one Marwynn did, IIRC, is a Intro tech PNT where the weapons are swapped for a large laser and LRM-10.

Overview:
The Amphigean Light Assault Group was one of the few DCMS contingents with an affinity for light BattleMechs. Throughout the Succession Wars they had utilized these fast units to deadly effect by darting around enemy formations and in packs descending on isolated targets. While extremely dangerous these ‘shock’ tactics proved most effective against some of the Dragon’s more cumbersome adversaries. In order to facilitate the Groups operations a modified Panther, the PNT-9ALAG, was designed for maximum speed which dropped the jump jets for a larger engine. Able to run at eighty-six kilometers per hour this variant was their preferred model in spite of the loss of jump mobility.
   Unfortunately, this unique design and the Amphigean’s hit and run tactics were not enough to stop the Clans whose fearsome Puma regularly outmatched them at every turn. Ultimately the Invaders destroyed both the 2nd and 5th Light Assault Groups on Avon and Krenice respectively. One member of the unit was confident he could get his Panther to match the performance of the high-tech intruders. Chaka Udaku was an elite Mechwarrior of African descent with the 1st Amphigean who set out to conduct this upgrade on his personal ‘Mech. Naming it the Black Panther in the same vein as the Grand Dragon both Draconis upgrades share the same primary weapon.

Capabilities:
   The key to the entire upgrade process was obtaining a 210 Extra Light Engine to power the new design. Thankfully Irian BattleMechs Unlimited in the Free Worlds League manufactured the Hermes 210 XL and was willing to export it the Combine. Originally made for the Capellan Confederation’s Raven this power plant increased the maximum speed of the Panther to ninety-seven kilometers per hour matching the Puma. To compensate for the larger engine a three-ton gyroscope had to be included in order to maintain proper design equilibrium. Of course, the rest of the Panther’s secondary weaponry also had to be dropped in order to make way for a second Extended Range Particle Projection Cannon. These two big guns are identical to the Puma’s primary arsenal and despite inferior to their hard-hitting Clan counterparts can equal their effective range. To compete with the ultra-advanced Targeting Computer and apply a new Kurita innovation Udaku convinced his superiors to allow him to mount a C3 Slave. While some traditionalists expressed doubts in this new equipment the C3 network feed into Amphigean Light Assault Group’s pack mentality.
Unfortunately, there were some design limitations which could not be overcome. Efforts to improve the Mech’s armor with Ferro-Fibrous were thwarted by a lack of internal space. Proving too bulky to fit on the existing chassis along with the rest of its weapons and equipment this concept had to be dropped ultimately. While one radical design proposal dropped the existing arms for weapon barrels which would have made such an armor upgrade possible it proved too costly. With a price tag nearly double the PNT-10K retaining the venerable Maximillian 42 armor which already provided excellent protection, eight-seven percent of maximum, became a no brainer. Also despite adding eleven Double Heat Sinks, which again matches its Clan adversary, firing both ER PPCs will cause overheating. So like the Puma this InnerSphere design must also alternate between firing both of its primary weapons and firing one to mitigate a high heat curve.

Also I do have two variants to do still. A lance commander with a C3 Master and a more primitive weaponry variant with one or both of the ER PPCs being replaced by standard models.

As for my entry I originally wanted to call it the Great Panther but the Black Panther had a certain appeal. What do you guys prefer?

Also I do have two variants to do still. A lance commander with a C3 Master and a more primitive weaponry variant with one or both of the ER PPCs being replaced by standard models.

How about the Grand Panther - there was after all the Grand Dragon that followed the Dragon

Grand Panther: Do the opposite of what the Grand Dragon did to the Dragon. Swap in an AC/5 with one ton of ammo. Remove PPC and two heat sinks. Swap SRM-4 for two medium lasers and maxed armor. All done in introductory tech

Thanks for your input Dragon Cat and Abele on the naming of my Great/Black Panther.

That is an interesting Level 1 option Abele. I would not call it 'Grand' however and I'd still rather go with a 5/8 LAG version rather than a 4/6/4.

Curious what would it take to make it an ICE Engine Mech (Primitive) with an AC/5 and some SRMs?

LiamsGhost love your concept for the line of Panther 'Zombies' just march forward slowly. Could you replace the PPC and SRM6 with 2 Large Lasers? Relatively long range and it would just keep coming in waves.

Also Abele you inspired me on a Panther IIC. Got that one coming up as well as the C3 Master version of the 'Grand Panther' and a more Primitive version.

Zombie Panther designed to outlast other BattleMechs and survive hits that a Mech shouldn't survive.  The designers unfortunately forgot that it is still a light BattleMech and they fall in droves.  The BattleMech's survival is boosted by not only a reinforced structure, Heavy Ferro Fibrous Armour, a Compact Fusion Engine and Gyro but also an experimental Blue Shield Project defence system meaning that pesky long range particle cannon hits are minimised.  A single ER Large laser allows it to fire forever

Overview:
After its introduction in 2739, the Panther was considered one of the best fire support 'Mech for reconnaissance units and was distributed through the Star League forces hunting down bandits in the Periphery.

However, during operations following the killing of The Edge in 2742, it was found out that while the Panther was useful in its role, it was too slow to keep pace with the other light 'Mechs it was assigned to cover and this resulted in several loses on the battlefield.

Eager to find a solution but in a real hurry as things were heating up in the Periphery and with a low budget available as the priorities for the coming years were the Sovetskii Soyuz-class WarShip and the brand new MCY-99 Mercury, the Quartermaster Command asked Ford Military Limited on Earth if they could work on a faster design with better firepower and the same protection as the Panther and for an increase in price as low as possible.

Eager to win back a contract from the Star League Defence Forces, the company quickly accepted and begin the work on this new 'Mech.

Capabilities:
After reviewing the performances of the Panther, the team saw that it would be difficult to upgrade it but that the challenge would be worth it.


First, they took a look at the firepower and decided to focus even more on long range support. For this, they upgraded the Nightwing Large Laser in its right hand to a brand new Newhart Extended-Range Large Laser. This increased the range of the design by more than 25%, making it easier to perform its role from further away.

The same was done with the Totschlagen-6 SRM Launcher, which was replaced by a Zeus-5 LRM Launcher, a weapon known for its extreme accuracy at all ranges. The weapon was placed in the left arm for a greater field of fire and provided with a special and shorter firing tube, allowing 5 missiles to be launched by two of them. This was seen as an experiment as there were no certainties about its efficiency.

These changes increased the efficient range of the weapons by 40% and increased the endurance of the 'Mech by allowing more salvo to be fired.


The trickiest part was now to increase the speed while keeping costs low and with a limited amount of weight to play with. The solution came from a young engineer that had been allowed to work on the development of the Mercury: Myomer Accelerator Signal Circuitry. With this, the maximum speed of the 'Mech would be increased by one third, allowing it to keep pace with almost all light units in use in the Star League Defence Forces.


However, to allow the MASC system to work efficiently the armor had to be redrawn completely as the myomer in the previous and angular configuration was prevented from moving more quickly. The armor was made less angular but kept at the same level of protection with 6.5 tons of Maxmilliam 42.

Along with this external reshaping, the number of heat sinks was reduced to 13 in order to make room for the MASC.


To allow the 'Mech to perform its missions in spite of all hardships, it was provided wth a Dield Ranger Sightseer Communications System and a Ranger LAF Model 2 Targeting and Tracking System. Both systems being battle trusted after their use on the Hussar and offering both extended range capabilities in terms of detection or communication and the ability to jam out most form of communications.


The final result was a 'Mech that had the same protection and mobility as the Panther but more range and speed for an increase in price of less than 500,000 Star League Dollars.


As a reward to the young engineer, she was allowed to choose the name of the 'Mech and she selected Shere Khan, the Prince of Tigers and the 'Mech was officially christened the Shere Khan SK-8.

Configuration / Variants:
The only variant made was at the beginning of the years 2750 and consisted in an upgrade in the communication and tracking systems and the change of the LRM-5 for a Holly-4 SRM Launcher.

This was seen as necessary as some pilots just wanted to be able to close the gap with the enemy and quickly finished it.

This variant was named Shere Khan SK-8WH.

Battle History:
The Shere Khan saw more than its share of fights in the Periphery and during the Amaris Coup.

One of its earliest battles was led by Lieutenant Kelly Twine during a raid by pirates on the world of Star's End in 2744. She began by firing from afar as was normal procedure but when the bandits stop withdrawing thinking they had managed to attract the light forces of the SLDF away of their support, she ordered her lance to use the MASC and outflanked quickly the surprised pirates, ending the fight quickly.

Deployment:
1 battalion worth of this design was produced each year by the different factories of Ford Military Limited. Each of them was sent to the different independent regiments present in the Periphery and hunting pirates and bandits.

As things were heating up in the Periphery and the different bandits were being supplied and trained by the Rim Worlds Republic, the Shere Khan was quickly outdated and was thus set away in favour of more modern designs.


However, it earned a second youth during Amaris Coup when it was assigned to Volunteers Regiments. Due to their casualty rates, few Shere Khan SK-8 survived the fight and most of the survivors left with General Kerensky.


The only pieces of information available are coming from the decoding of the Gray Death memory core by Coventry Research Facility.

Overview:
Following the Jihad, the DCMS was forced to spend years rebuilding and arms
restrictions led to them diverting equipment to stockpiles as they prepared to
resume their historic mission to bring all humanity under the benevolent rule
of the Dragon.

Manning this equipment would require a source of militia Mechwarriors who could
be promoted for regular service when the time came, however such units couldn't
be equipped with the most modern 'Mechs without drawing attention.

The solution found was the Grand Panther, officially a refit of older 'Mechs to
modern standards but actually supplemented by new production from Wakazashi,
confident that no one would be suspicious about relatively large numbers of
Panthers in Combine militias.


Capabilities:
The Panther had never been expected to move faster than heavy 'Mechs but the
proliferation of fast cavalry units meant that the original engine was no
longer able to keep up. Replacing it with an extra-light engine had been put
into practise as far back as the PNT-13K and the same Omni reactor was still
available. To further expand space available, a lightweight gyro was included.

The armament is completely upgraded, mounting a Lords Light PPC descended from
the original unit but increasing damage potential by fifty percent. More modern
heatsinks can comfortably cope with this as well as jumping - only firing the
missile launcher at the same time will stretch the cooling capacity.

The missile launcher installed is a sophisticated multiple munitions model
drawing from a pair of ammo bins, meaning that the Grand Panther can supplement
the heavy PPC at long range with volleys of LRMs or resort to SRMs when
fighting in close quarters. The ammunition load is more than sufficient for
extended operations and is protected behind CASE to save the mechwarrior in the
even of a shot penetrating the bins.

While XL engines tend to make me wary, higher ground speed, more armor, a heavy PPC and missile launcher upgrade to throw one more SRM and ability to throw LRMs to boot is very nice.

I looked at a light engine rather than extra-light but it didn't quite work out.
