Proto-Shrike
« on: July 19, 2017, 04:17:44 PM »

The pre-production test chassis of the Shrike set the standard for what was to follow once the Mech entered full production although the initial version saw far more limited production.  This was due to its in essence prototype nature as the Falcons had not integrated the partial wing system on so large a Mech before, and lots of tests were carried out on the Mech's structural integrity and strength to ensure it could survive repeated jumps and landings

With the familiar ER large lasers on the upper shoulder starting the weapons load a HAG-20 filled out the left arm, drawing from a 3 ton magazine built into the weapon itself.  For close range engagements a pair of SRM-4's were mounted in the armoured vambrace of the right arm, sharing a ton of ammunition between them.  A light TAG in the spacious head also allowed the Shrike to designate targets for artillery.
Perhaps one of the more surprising features was the inclusion of a full head ejection system.  The Scientists felt that the Shrike would serve mostly as a Mech for Cluster Commanders so their lives were worth the added complexity of the ejection system, with the Scientists seemingly putting value on Warrior lives.

Unfortunately the HAG still had to be imported from the Horses and there was constant feed issues with the loading system for the HAG and SRM's leading to jams and one SRM detonation which blew a prototype's arm off.

Not bad but given it's a prototype wouldn't it be better having a gauss rifle in place of the HAG?

Because of the size difference you'd have to compromise it further leading to the production model carrying the HAG

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Yup I'd also be tempted to drop down to a ton of ammo for gauss boost up your SRMs to a 6 they are Falcons and you have to Lasers for range

Or if you're in the DragonCat universe, the Shrike)

Although sharing some 'DNA' with the Onager, the Shrike is a different beast entirely.  At 95 tons it shares the weight bracket with the Turkina for heaviest front line Mech produced by Clan Jade Falcon, and indeed was built to supplement the older Mech, trading firepower for mobility and accuracy.
Built around an endo-steel skeleton and powered by a powerful 380 rated XL engine that can push the Shrike up to 64kph. The addition of a Partial Wing System allows for leaps of up to 120 meters with far greater control than the typical brute force required for normal jumps.

The Shrike also features a curiosity amongst The Clans, a full head ejection system.  The Mech was designed with an eye to it being the ride of an Officer, and with the Falcons suffering such heavy losses amongst their Officer corps something was needed to improve the life expectancy of the surviving officers.  Whilst somewhat controversial at first, it was recognised that Spheroid opponents would try targetting a Commanders Mech to weaken the Clans forces coordination and throw battle plans out of sync, so the system was accepted as a 'necessary evil'.

Built to engage at long range the Shrike is armed with a pair of ER Large lasers, each one mounted in a semi-gimbaled mount that allows them to fire at targets off center of without having to turn the Mech's torso, which is handy in a jump.  A HAG-20, currently imported from Clan Hells Horses provides additional long range firepower as well as acting as a lethal anti-aircraft weapon and sandblaster against heavily armoured targets.  The HAG is fed by three tons of ammunition, giving it long battlefield endurance.

For short range work a SRM-6 is also installed, which is useful when targets close or finishing off a weakened foe or one bold enough to try getting under the HAG's minimum range.
The Shrike also features a potent electronics system, an ECM shields the Mech from hostile C3 systems and targetting equipment whilst a targeting computer is linked into the lasers and HAG.

Whilst lighter on firepower than the Turkina the Shrike's mobility and speed allow it to control the range against an opponent and it can jump a huge distance without relying on massively heavy Improved Jump Jets.

Subject to a brutal trial by fire against a Turkina, the Shrike has started entering limited production with Clan Jade Falcon with one of the pre-production Mech's claimed by Khan Jaina Pryde.

Drawn by the amazing Matt Plog, this version of the Shrike came of my desire to change the Mech around a bit, and as good as the original art was, I felt it was too flat and broad across the chest and just looked a bit off.  Plus the partial wings were way too small, a drawback of having to base the art on the clickytech models.
Plog produced a much more angled and aggressive looking machine whilst keeping the same kind of feel for it.

The negative quirks are due to it being pretty damn new, the non-standard parts would probably dissapear in a few years but these would almost certinally be the perview of Cluster and Trinary Commanders and above, so not that common really, with the Turkina likely to remain the Falcons big 'line trooper' assault Mech thanks to its greater firepower.

Thoughts and comments are always most welcome

It has lighter firepower for my tastes personally, but It is also faster than most things it's size. My only suggestion for improvement would be switching the SRM-6 and ECM for a full CEWS. Maybe add an AMS of some kind in. Fluff looks fine to me, their experienced mechwarriors need something to keep them alive... of course if the Jade Falcons weren't bent on starting wars they don't have the manpower to finish, it wouldn't be nearly as big a problem.

The Shrike is equally undergunned, pair of ER large lasers and a pair of UAC-5s with an LRM-10 for some indirect firepower. I hate small caliber AC's and even putting a pair of them on a Mech that's not a dedicated flak unit imo is a waste of tonnage.  The HAG does roughly the same firepower for less tonnage so the trade off was acceptable, and you get a bit more heat sinks to play with, making this version cooler running.  The SRM is a bit of a weird choice i'll admit, but its more a defensive weapon than anything.  The Shrike's made to engage at long ranges, wearing an opponent down whilst boinging around and being a right pain in the arse. An AMS and ECM would have been a better choice, but I didn't want it to be flawless.
