Quicksilver Program #1 - 20 ton OmniMech (Zombie)

As part of the new Clan effort to restore the Star League, Operation Restoration, ilKhan Ulric Kerensky called for a comprehensive OmniMech building program. In order to optimize Clan battle capabilities up to May 21, 3067 and beyond every possible OmniMech chassis will be evaluated for best possible performance. Focusing on the trinity of battlefield – firepower, speed, and armor – each weight class will now have more than just one generalized design. This will maximize the Clan technological edge over the InnerSphere and develop better logistics which plagued earlier operations. Dubbed Quicksilver, in honor for the Mech that gave birth to the first OmniMechs, this program will require total commitment from all castes and every Clan. As Stacalkas-Nomen draws near let us be ready to defend our very way of life.

So lets start small with the 20 ton chassis. The only Clan Omni we have circa 3052 is the Fire Moth (aka Dasher) and since it is the epitome of Speedsters we are looking for two new designs. For the first challenge we are looking for a 20 ton Zombie OmniMech powered by a Standard Fusion engine. As this is a light machine and speed is always a factor I have established a movement minimum of 6/9. Remember that survivability above all, low costs, ease of production, and use of existing material are all benefits here.

While some Clans will use this Mech in front line service do not forget other Clans disdain for this design. No doubt they will be relegated to second or third line service at best. This means some Clans may possibly hold them in reserve as replacement for down equipment, training or testing gear, and even lesser roles. These Clans should not be the ones designing such equipment so when your creating this Zombie keep this in mind. Tell me which Clan built and why? Here is a list of which Clans prefer what in 3052 IMO.

The winning entry will be featured in my FedCom Forever universe which is outlined in my Clarion Call fanfic. I hoping to do a Technical Readout 3059 for this one day and if I follow through on that the winners shall appear in that. This work would not only follow the progression of Clan equipment in this alternate setting but the InnerSphere’s as well. Should make for an interesting piece in the future.

A very interesting first entry. Could you please redesign Configuration A. I don't believe Heavy Lasers are available at this time. Future versions would be fine. Otherwise well done! Like the Spirit story and the name.

General comments. Surprised you didn't have a version that included jump jets. Why didn't you include EndoSteel? It is only a ton of savings yes. Not enough benefit??

 O oky hmm I can turn alpha into a sniper with just a Regular ER Large Laser and put it back into the CT like the prime and move the TC to the Head.
  On the endo I was originally going to have it have endo then thought about the fact this is Clan Blood Spirit and that they don't like to really waste resources bad enough they had to have a Omni mech but to waste endo on a 20tn Mech Frame that isn't really going to last long kinda went against the Blood Spirits beliefs.
 For jump jets I believe version ah ECHO has the jump jets for this mech.
OKy I fixed alpha its the attached file shows the revised mech how do u guys get that info to show in code box so it doesn't make the page super long.

NIGHTCRAWLER

Overview:
Clan Burrock was among the first to answer the call of the ilKhan with the prototype of their Nightcrawler OmniMech.  This design was first manufactured by Burrock Scientists in 3037, but was quickly mothballed as the Khans desired more powerful (heavier) OmniMechs.  But since the ilKhan commanded a design for every weight class, the Burrock leadership jumped ahead by pulling the 20-ton Nightcrawler from mothballs and in the process became the very first Clan to submit a design to the ilKhan . . . just eleven days after he issued his request!

Ulric Kerensky was rather taken aback at the speed of the Burrock response and the fact that they shipped him not only design schematics and computer simulations, but a full Star of five complete and ready-to-field prototypes!  In a move calculated to sow division amongst the Crusaders, Kerensky publically praised the Burrocks as a shining example of a well-prepared Crusader Clan.

And the Nightcrawler was assigned to the Warriors of the Ebon Keshik for testing and evaluation in Project Quicksilver.

Capabilities:
Massing just 20-tons, the Nightcrawler (named after a species of nocturnal carnivorous beetles indigenous to Eden) uses Endo-Steel II internal structure to save available mass, along with 3.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor plating (for 97.1% of maximum coverage on a 20-ton chassis).  A standard 140-rate fusion engine was included to save costs; although larger than the 120-rate minimum power requirement issued by the ilKhan, this engine was sufficient to provide for a walking speed of 75.6 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 118.8 kph; at least one known configuration features seven jump jets for a maximum jump capacity of 210 meters as well.

Faster than most of the other submissions to Project Quicksilver, the Nightcrawler remains low-cost and easy-to-produce for Clans without extensive resources, despite the inclusion of Endo-Steel II and Ferro-Fibrous plating.  However, the design also featured a very low pod-space for a Clan OmniMech with a total available of just 5.5 tons (one ton LESS than the venerable Fire Moth).

Still, Burrock Scientists and Warriors managed to create some workable designs using that 5.5 tons.  All configurations below are equipped with lower arm and hand actuators on both arms, unless other noted.

The Nightcrawler Prime is armed with two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm) and five SRM-2 launchers fed by a single ton of ammunition (for a total of 50 missile salvoes).  Two SRM-2s are fitted to the right torso (along with ammo bin), two to the left torso, and one in the center torso.  With 10 DHS, only movement heat is generated on an Alpha Strike.

Configuration A has three sub-variants, all differing only in the electronics carried.  Each is armed with two Medium Pulse Lasers (right arm and left arm) and a Flamer (right torso).  The A-1 carries an Active Probe; the A-2 instead is outfitted with an ECM Suite; and the A-3 is armed with TAG.  Each is mounted in the center torso.  Very cool running and capable of accurate fire, the Nightcrawler A is a superb scout.

Configuration B has two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm, again), supported by an LRM-5 with a ton of ammunition (24 missile salvoes) both in the left torso, and an Anti-Missile System with a ton of ammunition (24 bursts) in the right torso.  Very cool running, this configuration is able to provide on-call fire-support at range.

Configuration C runs hotter than expected, but the overheat is minimal.  Armament consists of three ER Medium Lasers (right arm, left arm, and center torso) and three ER Small Lasers (two left torso and one right torso).

Configuration D is the long-range heavy hitter of the Nightcrawler family:  the main gun is an ER Large Laser in the right arm, supported by an ER Medium Laser in the left arm.  Completing the armament is an anti-personnel/incendiary Flamer in the center torso.  Despite the plethora of energy weapons, only movement heat is generated on an Alpha Strike.

And finally, there is Configuration E.  This model has seven jump jets (one center torso, three right torso, and three left torso) that puts a severe crimp in the available space for weapons.  With only two tons remaining, the Burrocks went with the most efficient combination:  a pair of ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm).

Deployment
So far, only five prototypes have been produced and are undergoing evaluation by the staff of the ilKhan.  To date, the Nightcrawler has yet to participate in actual combat operations and remains a unknown factor, despite Burrock hopes that this war-machine will finally see production for general use by the Clans of Kerensky.

Wow, two excellent entries! Can't wait for the Spirits and Burrocks to fight this one out!! Can you say the blood feud continues during this testing phase!!!  ;)

Two small critiques off hand. Hardly worth mentioning but I'm sure its ferro-fibrous with a CASE armor. More noteworthy is the weapons carry location is often the arms. I perhaps would move things inward to the torso playing up the survivability angle. Granted it only slightly improves it but hey...

Please keep them coming gang. Very enjoyable entries thus far!

The first two entries were so good they inspired me to create one. I'll post it if nobody thinks of the idea. Can't win cause its mine but inspiration for further contests.

Overview:
Designated the Hyena by the Inner Sphere, the Bone Lion was rushed into
production by Clan Steel Viper using a chassis hastily obtained from Clan Ice
Hellion as the need to rebuild from Tukkayid became apparent.


Capabilities:
Slow by Clan standards, the Bone Lion is intended for use by Clan Warriors
fresh out of the sibko or whose transfer to solahma units has been deferred by
the need to fill out garrison clusters stripped to rebuild frontline clusters.
The quad design was selected as this was deemed more stable and therefore
easier to pilot.


With pod-space comparable to the Fire Moth, the Bone Lion uses energy weapons
in most configurations - again more because the Viper Khans want to concentrate
ammunition on warriors less likely to waste it. The Gamma configuration, with
multiple LRMs, is the sole expection - permitted to counter indirect fire
barrages by AFFC lances of Dervishes and Valkyries.


Battle History:
Thus far the only successful action seen by the Bone Lion has been in
skirmishes against AFFC raiders and guerillas. Capable of keeping pace with
'Mechs such as the Commando and in most configurations well able to maintain an
extended chase, the Bone Lion is quite effective in a garrison role.


In it's one encounter with clan forces, a Trial of Possession on Twycross
against Clan Jade Falcon, the Bone Lion lived down to the expectations of the
Steel Viper's Khans.


Deployment:
Clan Steel Viper are thus far the only Clan to build the Bone Lion but the
rights were won by Clan Ice Hellion and the Jade Falcons challenged for and
took possession of the third and fourth production runs, using them to back up
their Kit Foxes.

A Quad was the design I had in mind in my last post but you have a different story then I. Nice job!

Quick question for you though. You have Ferro-Fibrous under component names along with Standard. In design looks like Standard but having quickly designed this 20 ton Omni myself you could add Ferro-Fibrous even though it knocks critical space down to 9 (you loss 12 crits for the Quad front leg trade and 7 more for armor) which adds a ton to play with. Your design uses 6 crits at max so you could add the ton or was it too tight for your liking? I found that the armor numbers maxed out best with the standard armor so that maybe my answer. Just wondering. ;)

Overview:
Following a series of setbacks following the Khatib incident, the Cloud Cobras
were in a nigh desperate need to replace their Battlemech forces. In the latter
stages of this recovery, and as resources were being stretched thin, clamn
Cobra scientists were tasked with designing a resource efficient  light
OmniMech to continue their rebulding process. The Silver Fang is loosely based
on a Fire Moth chassis taken as isorla. Gone form the Fire Moth is the
relatively expensive 200XL engine. This is replaced by the more resource
effient standard 120 series engine found among the Stingers and Wasps in the
Cobra caches.


The Silver Fang is well protected three-and-a-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor,
when combined with the endo- steel structure this allows the Silver Fang to
have  six-and-a-half tons of pod space with which to arm this OmniMech. There
are five varients which a variety of weapons. Three variants feature
long-ranged weapons, a fourth feature short-ranged weapon and a fifth which a
striker mech.

An earlier version used ff armour, my bad for not changing it. I removed it when I switched to quad and was worried about pod-space. Needlessly as it turned out.

I understand JP. The 20 ton zombie is a tough challenge since you can only go in a few directions. 25 tonners will be 2 weeks off. Got one more 20 tonner to go!
