Quicksilver Program #11: 70 ton Zombie OmniMech

Past the half way point of sorts in Quicksilver and there have been some very interesting developments for the Clans. First off I have to say no more Burrock entries please as they have reached the maximum amount of production for their Clan’s industrial base. During their recent wins (Iron Spider 60 ton Zombie, Gremlin 30 ton Zombie, Nightcrawler 20 ton Zombie) we have found out a bit more about them I think. Their Khans have adapted well to difficult circumstances at least in the Clarion Call setting. The Burrocks have really embraced the Quicksilver Program and the Zombie doctrine which will supplement their Touman nicely. They join Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar, and Wolf as Clans who have topped out so to speak.

Next we have a group of four Clans who could stand pat in regards to production but could also add another design or two to their industrial capacity. The Ghost Bears are the primary manufacturers of four OmniMechs [Fire Moth 20 ton Werewolf, Viper 40 ton Werewolf, Kingfisher 90 ton Zombie, Executioner 95 ton Werewolf]. The Nova Cats, Steel Vipers, and Star Adders all produce three. Two name changes to remind you of will be the Nova Cat (70 ton Vampire) to the Pulsar and the Blood Asp (90 ton Werewolf) to the Black Mamba.

Snow Raven and Cloud Cobra who each produce a single OmniMech design each and as you will discover they have other plans that make them unconcerned with further development. No doubt the Blood Spirits can not be too happy with Burrocks success although them and their Fire Mandrill allies along with a few new friends are a pretty interesting story. These four Clans could also factor into future designs but if they do not I am really unconcerned.

With nine OmniMech designs to go it really boils down to five Clans with big needs to fill. Chief among them are the Hell’s Horses and Goliath Scorpions who still have no Primary Manufacturing Commitments. With things turning ugly as seen in the Deathstalker fluff both are getting a little desperate to fulfill the ilKhan’s bare minimum quota.  Hell’s Horses in particular is hurting with the discontinuation of the Hellbringer and multiple lines sitting idle. Ice Hellion will likely be unsatisfied with just one OmniMech and Coyote is feeling the pinch after losing out on the Lupus and the fate of the Woodsman is still up in the air.

Then there is Diamond Shark who I would expect to get more aggressive in a bid to corner the market. With only the Sand Devil in production and losing out on the Grendel things are getting tough. So with my industrial expectations being Goliath Scorpion [1], Ice Hellion [2], Coyote [3], Diamond Shark [3], and Hell’s Horses [3] someone is gonna come up short. Not to mention those other 8 Clans still capable and willing to fill out their capacity like Burrock, Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar, and Wolf.

So what we are looking for here is a 70 ton Clan OmniMech built as a Zombie who has a minimum movement factor of 4/6. Remember these war machines are slow movers with standard fusion power plants that can take loads of damage before going down. We are really starting to see some nasty heavy weight sluggers who have more than half their mass reserved for weapons and equipment. Zombies are also the cheapest Mechs to build and the easiest to construct. I would like to see a lot of recycled equipment especially when it comes to engines and other components if possible. This will speed production and enable the Clans to rapidly field this equipment for Operation Restoration.

Also remember that Zombies are looked down on by more than a few Clans, see the updated production list above for preferences. Many refuse to use them or at best will place them in second line service often placing these relics in reserve rather than use them for front line combat. When choosing Clan for your design keep in mind that another major point in the submission process, the name. Accepted naming conventions for the Quicksilver Program include two major criteria. Star League Standard English is a must at this point in Clan history for your presentation. They take great pride in their language and will not pollute it with contractions or foreign ‘Mech names. Also do not name your design after a Clan. I personally dislike the whole totem Mech idea and for the united Quicksilver Program such cheerleading will be bounced by the ilKhan.

The winning entry will be featured in my FedCom Forever universe which is outlined in my Clarion Call fanfic. Technical Readout 3054: Quicksilver Program is really shaping up thanks to your participation. It will feature all the contest winners, some other notables, and tell us what the Clans of this alternate universe are up to. With every contest we get closer and closer to a finished product. I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program as it makes things easier on me. I am looking forward to seeing what ideas are developed here and hopefully I can build on them in my fanfic. Any questions or more information can be obtained by simply contacting me at anytime. Tomb Scarab

Overview
In 3030, Khan Lar Seidman of Clan Hell's Horses directed the Horse Scientists to begin work on eliminating the problems and deficiencies associated with a quad-motive BattleMech.  Although never a high-priority project, Seidman was convinced that if the bone-shaking ride of the SCP-series Scorpion and the lack of flexibility of the GOL-series Goliath could be solved, that a quad-motive BattleMech might one day serve the Horses as a fire-support element.

Khan Seidman was killed in 3046, but the fruits of his command sixteen years earlier would be felt in just six short years.  In 3052, the ilKhan commissioned PROJECT QUICKSILVER, calling for submissions of designs for common Clan-wide production.  Khan Malavai Fletcher was determined to win at least one of the coveted slots and she turned to her Scientists, urging them to unearth plans and concepts filed away for future completion.

Scientist-Warrior Timothy Cobb (a Bloodnamed Warrior who had 'retired' from the Horse Touman in 3042 at the age of 41 and begun a second life as a Scientist) was one of the members of Seidman's team working on solving the problems of existing quad-Mechs.

Scientist Cobb requested a meeting with the Khan and there he presented her with the work begun by her predecessor.  But the plans and schematics were not for a BattleMech, but instead for a quad-motive OMNI-Mech!  Four prototypes, Cobb reassured the Khan, had been tested since 3047 . . . although not armed and not in combat.  But the motive difficulties had been eliminated in full by use of computer run-by-wire systems and a gyroscopically stabilized cockpit mounted cradle which automatically controlled roll, pitch, and yaw to compensate for the abnormal (compared to a biped design) movement.

Khan Fletcher almost dismissed the notion, but then Cobb told her that the preliminary design featured a full THIRTY-TWO tons of pod-space for weapons and equipment . . . albeit at a lower speed than the majority of OmniMechs of the same weight class (but not less than many standard BattleMechs).

Fletcher demanded a demonstration which took place on August 17, 3052 at the Cobb Trial Grounds on Niles.  There the as-yet-unnamed OmniMech was put through its paces by the veteran Scientist-Warrior as the Khan observed.  Timothy Cobb pushed the frame to its utmost and in the end, Malavai Fletcher was convinced that the design had merit.

And after seeing the unique side-ways crawl of the OmniMech, she immediately christened the new war-machine the Tomb Scarab.


Capabilities
Massing 70-tons, the Tomb Scarab uses a 280-rate standard fusion engine that provides for a walking speed of 43.2 kilometers per hour and a  maximum running speed of 64.8 kph.  Despite the pinch on internal volume, Horse Scientists opted to use Endo-Steel II for the internal frame and Ferro-Fibrous armor plating to protect the war-machine; a full twelve and one-half tons were so fitted providing in excess of 99% of the maximum theoretical armor protection . . . a GREATER amount of armor than that carried by the 75-ton Timber Wolf!

Only the base ten double-strength heat sinks were fitted.  This did leave a full 32.0 tons of pod-space available for weapons and equipment, although the limited volume promised to make configurations difficult.  Indeed, the majority of configurations shown to date feature two heavy ballistic weapons (low-heat, for the most part), supported by a moderate array of energy weapons designed to use the internal heat sinks to their maximum.

The Prime Configuration carries two LB-10X autocannons, each with three tons of ammunition for thirty twin bursts (divided among the right and left torsos).  A Large Pulse Laser is mounted in the center torso to supplement these guns.  Cool running, the Tomb Scarab Prime is able to use all three weapons constantly . . . as long as the ammunition reserves last, that is.

The Prime-2 is a almost identical to the Prime, replacing the Large Pulse Laser with a longer-ranged and harder hitting ER PPC.  Not quite as cool-running, the Prime-2 can overheat on a running Alpha Strike . . . but only a minimal amount.  This was deemed worth the added reach and firepower.

Configuration A is similar, but with twin Ultra AC-10 autocannons and six tons of ammo (once again, evenly divided between the right and left torsos).  As with the Prime, a Large Pulse Laser is mounted in the center torso. When firing both UAC-10s in rapid-fire mode, the Tomb Scarab A does generate a slight amount of excess overheat, but it is quite manageable.

Configuration B features two Gauss Rifles and four tons of ammunition for sixteen double shots (right and left torsos AGAIN) with a center torso mounted ER Large Laser in support. 

Configuration C is the first scheme that does not feature a ballistic weapon.  Three Large Pulse Lasers (right torso, center torso, and left torso) are the main guns, supported by a head-mounted ECM Suite.  Fifteen DHS eliminates all excess heat but that caused by movement.  One additional Large Pulse Laser has been fitted to the right torso firing to the rear, along with a Medium Pulse Laser in the left torso, also firing to the rear.  Although most unusual, they do protect the Tomb Scarab's weakest point and NO ONE expects to encounter a rear-mounted Large Pulse Laser!

Configuration D features a Large Pulse Laser in the center torso and a Medium Pulse Laser in the head . . . but these weapons only exist for when the primary missile launchers exhaust their ammunition.  Four LRM-15 launchers with Artemis IV FCS give the Tomb Scarab D its ranged punch (two each in the right and left torsos, fed by six tons of ammunition divided equally between the right and left torsos for 12 quad missile salvoes).  With only the base ten DHS, the Tomb Scarab D generates movement heat as excess when using just the missile launchers; however, if the Warrior wishes to conserve ammunition he can substitute the Large Pulse Laser for two of the 15-racks for no added heat burden.

Configuration E has a Large Pulse Laser in the center torso, supported this time by EIGHT Streak SRM-4 launchers (four each in the right and left torso) fed by four tons of ammunition (two each in the right and left torsos) giving a total of 100 missile salvoes.  Even with twelve DHS, the Tomb Scarab E will critically overheat if firing all nine forward guns, but with the 'No-Lock, No-Fire' nature of the Streaks, this was deemed acceptable.  Two Medium Pulse Lasers (right torso and left torso) were added firing to the rear to provide some additional protection to attacks from that direction.

And finally, Configuration F features four jump-jets (two each right and left torso) for a 120-meter jump capacity.  Armament is very similar to the Prime, with two LB-10X autocannons (right torso and left torso) fed by four tons of ammunition (two each in the right and left torsos) for 20 twin bursts.  The center torso energy mount is an ER Large Laser.  This configuration is heat neutral on a jumping Alpha Strike.

The unique movement modes available to the Tomb Scarab requires specialized training for Warriors to become accustomed to.  However, the ability to side-step and to crouch opens up an entire realm of new tactical possibilities on the battlefield.  Combined with the heavy armor protection and tremendous firepower available to this OmniMech, the Horses consider it a superb, if slightly slow, fire-support element that will serve the Clans well.


Deployment
Khan Fletcher presented five Tomb Scarabs to the ilKhan late in 3052 for evaluation and testing.  This included the original four prototypes and one hastily assembled unit constructed in just forty-four days.  Still, she refuses to start even limited production of the design until the ilKhan makes the decision as to whether or not he will select this OmniMech for Clan-wide production.  When questioned on this issue, Khan Fletcher answered, "Only a fool spends more in resources than he must.  Even if the design wins, the ilKhan might well award production to another Clan.  We are the Herd and we shall Wait until the Stallion speaks."


Additional
When the SLDF arrived in the Pentagon, numerous Terran animal and insect species were released into the wild . . . some were genetically modified, others were not.  The beetles of the family Scarabaeidae were among those who were NOT genetically modified for their new homes.

Evolution, however, shaped these brilliantly colored insects in a new direction.  Competing for a niche within existing ecosystems, the beetles mutated into an aggressive, omnivorous species that relied on their thick exoskeletons and razor-sharp mandibles to protect themselves from other predators.

Soon after the first examples of the new beetles first appeared, the Pentagon Civil War erupted . . . and the scarabs found a new source of protein.  Named the Tomb Scarab, the beetles would burrow into fresh graves and devour rotting corpses; often enough, grave diggers of the Civil War would come under attack by swarms of these creatures when he disturbed a nest in an adjacent grave.

Although not among the nineteen species of animals selected by Nicholas Kerensky to serve as the totems of his Clans, the first ilKhan greatly admired these scavengers for their ability to utilize and consume every last scrap of flesh and sinew from the dead . . . a most industrious use of available resources, as he wrote in his journals.

Today, the Tomb Scarab has spread across the Kerensky Cluster (and has been spotted in the Occupation Zones as well) where it is often considered an invasive species.  Lethally so, as well, as a typical swarm of Tomb Scarabs often numbers in the hundreds.

I had forgotten about the 65-ton Crossbow and originally designed the Tomb Scarab above as a 65-ton Zombie.  The inspiration was the standard Fire Scorpion BattleMech, but I believed that the Horses would make a better choice than Clan Goliath Scorpion.  After Takiro posted the competition, I had to go back to increase the tonnage.  While this DID give me 2.5 additional tons for weapons and armor, the pinch on internal components was VERY TIGHT.  Still, I do believe that the Tomb Scarab is a capable and rather frightening design that is almost pure Clan in concept.  MORE GUN.  Lots of Dakka-Dakka-Dakka!  Think of most configurations as a fast Awesome and you aren't too far off, even though it uses ballistic weapons instead of PPCs for two-thirds of the available firepower (in most configurations).  I added the all-energy loadout and the two missile configs just to give the design some flexibility.  Hope y'all like her.

Overview:
After throwing considerable resources into lighter categories for the
Quicksilver programme and getting no useful results, the Hells Horses were
getting frantic. Without the resources of building at least one of the new
designs, they could easily fall behind other clans. Even the Fire Mandrills had
secured two slots!

With factory space available from the retirement of the venerable Hellbringer,
the Horses repurposed as much of the sub-assembly production as possible
towards a new heavy OmniMech design. To ease production they started from an
existing and successful BattleMech design: one based on the ancient and
well-understood Guillotine.

Already in wide deployment, the Guillotine IIC could readily be rebuilt to
supplement new production. There was only one problem: the Hells Horses didn't
have the rights to the design. The Coyotes struck a tough bargain by insisting
on joint design and production. Their insistance on opening up more pod-space
than that allocated in original drafts of the design, made jumpjets an option
and cut back the default allocation of heatsinks to a minimum.

Initial arguments over the project had the Coyotes label the design as the
Crazy Horse - possibly in partial reference to the Inner Sphere's claim that the
Hellbringer Prime, on which the Horse's preferred configuration of the new
design had been based, was crazy. The Hells Horses, not in on the joke, traced
an ancient Terran warleader by the name and assumed name was a deliberate
reference rather than a slur, adopting it as the official name of the new 'Mech.


Capabilities:
While the Guillotine IIC's inner chassis and engine remained completely viable,
the armour wasn't up to modern standards. A new and thicker layer of Forging
Omni-H24 - now available from the same plant that supplied it for the
Hellbringer - modestly improved protection. Electronics were instead copied
directly from those used on the Summoner, providing cross-compatibility of
parts.

Rather than the classic 'Prime' configuration, the Hells Horses instead laid
out the H configuration, resembling the Hellbringer's Prime configuration for
their own use. The preferred configuration of the Crazy Horse for Clan Coyote
is the G, resembling the Guillotine IIC.

Working from here the Clan's scientists developed A configuration as a sniper -
almost identical to a configuration on the new Pulsar heavy Omni-Mech.

The B configuration is similarly intended as a long range support 'Mech - the
Crazy Horse is unlikely to be able to chase down a target so it needs long
range armament.

The precise opposite sentiment is asserted by the C configuration which favours
close quarters in rough terrain by focusing on short range firepower and an
active probe.

Clan Diamond shark has so far elected to stay out of the quicksilver competitions, preferring instead to let the ilKhan play his game of attempting to homogenize clan manufacturing for their own financial benefit.  Some cluster commanders however saw potential to use the program in order to bulk out their touman, particularly among the traditionally well-equipped Garrison Clusters.

Star Captain Alan Hawker presented the Soynya (named after a Russian Axe) to Khan Sennat for consideration to the program.  In addition to the technical specs for the design and attached computer simulations, Hawker also presented a trade plan that involved appropriating the 280 rated fusion engine from Clan Coyote’s Guillotine, as they would be most willing to trade.  The frame itself was to be acquired, from of all sources, Clan Wolf itself.  The Diamond Shark Watch had previously obtained information on the Wolves Collaboration with the Inner Sphere, Vis a Vie Wolf’s Dragoons.  Khan Natasha Kerensky’s last report to Ulric Kerensky included technical documents that were developed to counter the clans on a mass scale.  This unnamed heavy Mech was designed to deploy for extended campaigns

Society Cell Addendum: We delivered designs for both the Marauder II and the Gallowglas to Wolf's Dragoons as a means of disrupting the Warrior caste, we knew invasion was inevitable and would be the beginning of the end.  that the Warrior Caste and their Watch can catch us in the act like this shows we need to reestablish our security measures and tighten them.  these are rejected designs, what happens if they discover project Battle Epsilon 5?

The Primary Configuration matches this concept battlemech that was stolen by the Clan Watch almost to a Tee, a precision guided all energy armament and jump jets will permit the Soynya to engage the enemy for protracted periods in hit and fade attacks that Garrison forces will be forced to engage in with Inner Sphere Opponents.

Alternate Configuration A is designed for defensive operations as well.  Modeled after the Davion Battleaxe twin PPCs provide principle offensive firepower while paired Missile Launchers are designed to slow down enemy forces through either thunder mines or indirect fire.  A Streak SRM six is used for anti elemental operations.  Most telling is an additional broad-spectrum spotlight as found on the Warhammer and Guillotine mechs.  In a hypothetical deployment of a full star of mechs, two A’s could provide illumination for a full star.

Alternate configuration B is modeled directly after the Grizzly, designed to appeal in sales to the Ghost Bears and also provide a respectable mech for all customers.

Alternate C has been nicknamed “the Destroyer” and is designed for Garrison support and ambush roles.  Twin Assault Autocannon s provides crippling firepower under most circumstances.  A single ERPPC is the acknowledgment that occasionally mechs are deployed in situations that they are not suited for.  Most interesting is the 500-kilogram cargo pod that is strapped to the rear center torso of the mech.  This is mean primarily it seems to carry additional equipment and supplies to garrison infantry or occasional elementals that may be attached to the Soynya.

Both Alternate Configurations D and E are designed to combat Inner Sphere forces directly. D is an anti tank and AA Platform.  A Gauss Rifle and Large Laser provide more concentrated punch.

Alternate E is more geared towards countering Armor, elementals, and knocking out already damaged mechs.  Particularly deep ammunition bins for the 44mm cannons permit long-term engagements.

MA has just forced me to change the name of my entry as it also uses the word 'Scarab' in its name. Mine is also a quad though it does have less pod space than his, but that is due to the loadout  and crit space I needed.

I see that you took the same approach the Vipers did with the Crossbow. Speed over firepower. this is a good thing with lights and mediums, I don;t think it worls well with heavies.

O I know but the crossbow is to slow for clan ice hellion . :) I know I was in a strange land when I thought up this zombie but Ur not going to have many heavies that can run down medium and even some light mechs and its got 50% of a locust's weight in armor alone .

Nice design JP, I will add to the ilKhan's evaluations.

for the record the Sharks already produce the Stormcrow and Mad Dog at Manufacturing Plant DSF-8 over Paxton

Again another effect of the Quicksilver Program is the consolidation of existing production lines in order to maximize out put of war material. The Stormcrow is a Snow Raven design while the Mad Dog is a Smoke Jaguar design and it is those Clans that are now responsible for primary manufacturing. Their industrial centers are being strengthened and enlarged by the addition of resources like raw materials and complex shipments from other Clans for the united war effort. These Primary Factories will be more InnerSphere or Star League like in their scope being capable of greater production rates. Such sites like the Arctic Cheetah's on Foster can be won from another Clan like Smoke Jaguar did to Ice Hellion before the invasion. The Sharks will continue producing the Stormcrow and Mad Dog at secondary sites I would imagine but not at the rates of primary facilities. This will all be debated in the next Clan chapter of Clarion Call.

Origins

The Cane toad is an amphibian species introduced by clan scientists to Dagda to deal with the Dagdan Locusts that were ravaging crops across the barely habitable world. Whilst the toads dealt with the insect problem most admirably, they have since become their own plague upon the world, adapting to almost every environment that does not immediately kill them. Upon hearing of the Quicksilver Project and its call for new 'Mechs of every type, the scientists Clan Goliath Scorpion thought this a perfect representation of their new heavy machine.

Capabilities

The Cane Toad chassis is based heavily upon the Grizzly, although how the Scorpions managed to talk the Ghost Bears into sharing the technical plans, but rumour says that the Diamond Sharks traded the Bears for it, and then traded it on to the Scorpions, though what the Sharks got out of the deal is unknown. What is known is that this 70 ton 'Mech has the same Endo steel structure as the Grizzly and the same 280-rating fusion engine, the Scorpions wrapped it in 10.5 tons of Ferro Fibrous armour, just one ton shy of its maximum. With no other equipment fixed to the chassis (although in the great Goliath Scorpion tradition every variant contains an advanced targeting computer in the left torso) the mech has thirty four tons of pod space with which to battle its foes.

The Prime variant is built as a long range sniper, with a Gauss rifle in its right arm fed by three tons of ammo and two ER Large lasers in the other arm. An ER Medium laser in the left and right torsos support the main guns, while the five-ton targeting computer and fourteen double heat sinks allow it keep raining fire from a great distance without heat becoming an issue, although it cannot handle a full alpha strike.

The Alpha variant is definitely a close range brawler, with its LBX-20 fed by three tons of ammo once again in the right arm to either blast big holes in its opponent, or sandblast him depending on the warriors preference. Four Medium pulse lasers split between the left arm and right torso support the main gun and give it enough firepower to continue the fight should the autocannon run dry. Four jump jets were added to give it added mobility in broken or urban terrain, and its ECM suite will help shield the mech from the enemy while it closes the range. A four-ton targeting computer gives its accurate guns even more precision, while the twelve heat sinks allow it to handle all but a jumping alpha strike.

The Bravo configuration is more of a general purpose machine, the ER Large laser in the left arm and twin LRM 15 racks in the torso give it long range fire support ability, while the Ultra-10 in the right arm and ER Medium in the left arm give it good mid-ranged firepower also. Again a three-ton targeting computer aids the warriors accuracy, and fourteen heat sinks handle most of the heat load. Battlefield longevity could be a issue for this configuration however, with only twenty volleys for the Autocannon and twelve for each of the missile racks, this machine cannot travel too far from supply lines.

The Charlie variant is another that mounts jump jets, and like the alpha is designed as a close range brawler in rough terrain. However unlike the alpha this configuration mounts a heavy all energy loadout, starting with a large pulse laser in the right arm with an ER medium and flamer slung beneath it. The left arm mounts a pair of medium pulse lasers as well as another ER medium, with 4 more ER mediums split between the left and right torsos. A full electronic suite including ECM, Active Probe, TAG and a four-ton targeting computer allow a warrior to spot targets for his allies as well as avoid notice himself. As a last minute modification the scientists added an Anti-missile system in the head, to further protect this deadly machine. Five extra heat sinks were added, but even they do not come close to handling a full alpha strike, and the warrior piloting this machine must keep an eye on his heat gauge.

And finally the Delta configuration, which is deadly in its simplicity. It mounts a large pulse laser in each arm, supported by an ER large laser in the left and right torsos respectively. Its four-ton targeting computer gives it pinpoint accuracy at almost any range, whilst the twenty heat sinks allow it to alpha strike with only a small heat buildup.

Deployment

Other then the ten demonstration machines built to be shown to the ilKhan -two of each-, production of these machines has not yet begun, awaiting the ilKhans approval.
