This second of two challenges that will attempt to beat an existing design which had previously been retired by the Clans. The Quicksilver Program forced the Clans scour every known design for renewed use against their dishonorable InnerSphere opponents. With the rise of the Zombie OmniMech several retired OmniMech designs using standard fusion engines were considered for reactivation. While these old designs have come close to restoration they were defeated by newer Clan designs. It was the Coyotes, a Clan many say has past its prime, that have bought these deactivated machines back for consideration.

The Woodsman was first produced in 2865 and was the first OmniMech ever made by the Wolf Clan. This highly tested and well regarded design would serve for nearly a century in front line Clan service before being reduced to second line status. Its standard 300 fusion engine enables it to reach a 4/6 movement rate that combined with a MASC could reach 8 MPs for short periods of time. As faster Clan designs came online these systems would be pushed passed their breaking point resulting in their eventual retirement. Despite its deactivation the Woodsman would inspire three future OmniMech designs (Timber Wolf, Gargoyle, Naga) and continue to have an excellent reputation.

It is a favorite of Clan scientists who often used this versatile museum piece to test new configurations and weapon systems. With 27 tons of pod space and some pretty nasty weapons and equipment many argue that the Woodsman could still be very useful to the Clans especially against the InnerSphere. Highly durable with 13.5 tons of Durallex Heavy standard armor the Woodsman has a 216 armor factor. While short of full protection it is still a pretty impressive Zombie. It also has an EndoSteel structure which is pretty high tech especially when compared to Inner Sphere opponents.

Working in conjunction with their Wolf allies the Coyotes successfully petitioned for the manufacturing rights to the Woodsman. With the failures of the Coyotl and the Lupus many within the Clan are growing nervous. Should the Woodsman fail to measure up to the ilKhan’s standard the Coyotes will be reduced to just one OmniMech primary factory, the Savage Coyote. Could there be an attempt to proactively upgrade of the Woodsman with the help of the Wolves? It is possible but other Clans are certain to step forward with their own designs which could enter service rapidly and outmatch the Woodsman.

While Burrock, Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar and Wolf can not add to their production totals they could play a role. The Hell’s Horses fresh from their first Quicksilver victory are on the look out for more. Goliath Scorpion is still looking to secure its first OmniMech manufacturing slot in this reshaped Clan industry. Diamond Shark, Ice Hellion, Cloud Cobra, and Snow Raven only possess a single primary OmniMech factory site thus far which means they are looking to pounce. Not to mention the other six Clans who are also ready to gain a greater share of the industrial complex.

So this time around we are looking for a 75 ton Clan OmniMech with a standard engine that can take a whole lot of punishment. I am going to keep the movement minimum of 4/6 for the Clan Heavy weight class even though we are rapidly approaching the Assault class. Again I like to hear about Clan components already in use, like the engines, which have been included in the design to lower costs and speed development. Also remember that Zombies including the Woodsman are looked down on by some Clanners. Many refuse to use them or at best will place them in second line service often placing these relics into reserve rather than use them. However these cheap, endurance based designs can be easily manufactured by poorer Clans.

While you are picking a designing Clan keep in mind that another major point in the submission process, the name. The name of your entry is a big deal as more then one designer has found out. Accepted naming conventions for the Quicksilver Program include two major criteria from this point forward. Star League Standard English is a must at this point in Clan history for your presentation. They take great pride in their language and will not pollute it with contractions or foreign ‘Mech names. Also do not name your design after a Clan. I personally dislike the whole totem Mech idea and for the united Quicksilver Program such pomp pomps will be bounced by the ilKhan.

Remember that your entries will be ranked against your fellow designers and the venerable Woodsman which was detailed in the Golden Century PDF available over the internet. The winning entry will be featured in my FedCom Forever universe which is outlined in my Clarion Call fanfic. Technical Readout 3054: Quicksilver Program is really shaping up thanks to your participation. It will feature all the contest winners, some other notables, and tell us what the Clans of this alternate universe are up to. With every contest we get closer and closer to a finished product.

I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program as it makes things easier on me. Nice the Woodsman II by LordGrayson. Coyotes can not be pleased that the Blood Spirits and Fire Mandrills trying to steal their design.  ;)

O thought it was Clan Wolfs mech not the yote's mech ah well might have to redo the fluff a bit about the mechs fight and switch it to Clan Yote getting their butts kicked and not the big bad wolf.

OK, it looks like I'm the one who breaks the mold this time in using a design that falls outside of the design parameters by going 3/5(6)/0. I traded firepower for speed. If I would have gone 4/6 with no MASC and using the same chassis and armor setup, I would have had about four tons less pod space and that is a lot of firepower to give up. As the adage goes, "Armor, Speed, Firepower: Pick two to make a good design" and that's what I went with. I realize that this will likely cost me the win, given previous results, but I'm not bothered by that fact. The image below would have the side torso weapons switching side and the overall appearance would be more lizard-like. Additionally, this will like be tha last Quad I field as a Zombie as crit space will be a limiting factor as available pod tonnage goes up. with this design I used nearly every crit available on each of the five configs.

Overview:
Flush with their success in designing the Gila Monster, Clan Steel Viper
decided to make another foray in the designing of a suitable quad OmniMech.
This design began life as the Thunder Lizard, an early attempt at a second-line
battlemech that ended in failure due to the previously mentioned unfamiliarity
with quad design. The Thunder Lizard was based on the early Star League-era
Xanthos. It featured a similar armament to the Xanthos but on a chassis a
quarter of the size. Ultimately, the Thunder Lizard never entered production
due it's unreliability and it was shelved.

After the Gila Monster placed second in the IlKhan's trials, the Thunder Lizard
was resurrected to breathe life into the Clan's next foray into the IlKhan's
competition. The first objective was to maximize firepower, which came at the loss
of mainline speed by stripping out the standard 300 series engine and replacing it
with a 225 series fusion plant. This dropped the speed down to a maximum of 54
kph and left the new Omni with 34 tons of pod space. However, saKhan Andrews
felt that speed needed to be maintained, so the lead designer fixed a MASC
system to the new Omni's chassis, which gave the Monitor a top speed of 65kph,
if only for a short time. This left the Monitor with a total of 31 tons of pod space,
which was quite admirable for a quad chassis with just enough internal space make
use of it all. More pod tonnage could have been available if not for the inclusion of
four anti-personnel pods mounted one per leg.


Configurations:
Given the Steel Viper's well known predilection for the Ultra autocannon, four
of the five configurations are fitted with one. Each of the four iterations of
the Ultra is featured on the Monitor chassis.

The Prime configuration is a near virtual upgrade of the XNT-3O Xanthos and
features an Ultra-20 autocanoon with a four-ton ammo bin. It is backed up by an
ER PPC. The Xanthos' SRM-6 has been upgraded to a Streak launcher. Four ER
small lasers and a small pulse laser provide additional close range firepower.

The A configuration is the only variant that is not armed with an Ultra
autocannon. However, it boasts significant firepower with the Gauss Rifle and
its three-ton ammo bin. An Artemis-equipped LRM-15 gives the A added long-range
striking power. Four medium pulse lasers and three flamers give the 
Monitor added protection in close quarter combat.

The B configuration features the Ultra-10 autocannon as the main weapon and is
fed by a three-ton ammo supply. For close-in support two Streak SRM-6 launchers
are mounted to  exploit holes punched in the enemy's armor by the Ultra-10. A
quintet of ER lasers provide fire support. The heat buildup of these is
somewhat mitigated by two additonal heat sinks.

The C configuration's main weapons are pair of large pulse laser backed up by
an Ultra-5 autocannon with a deeper than usual ammo bin. Three ER medium laser
and a pair of small pulse lasers add even more firepower. Four double heat snks
have been mounted to manage the heat of the vast array of energy weapons. An
ECM suite is also mounted to interfere with the enemy's guidance systems

The final configuration features the other love of the Steel Vipers, the
twenty-tube long-range missile launcher. Two Artemis-equipped launchers are
carried and are fed by six tons of ammunition. An Ultra-2 autocannon is mounted
to discourage enemy fighters and vehicles from getting too close to the Monitor.
Three medium pulse lasers and two ER small lasers provide protection from any
enemy that happens to get too close.

Overview:
Concerned that the Woodsman might be insufficient to secure them a slot in the
coveted top end of the Heavy 'Mechs, the Coyotes went back to the drawing
board.

The key to their efforts was diplomacy. A rising bloodnamed warrior and rival
to the Coyote's leaders, Silas Kufahl, surpassed all expectations by winning the
rights for partial design data of the Orion IIC. The Wolves have defended the design
jealously since 2841 but Kufahl pointed out the long friendship between his
Bloodhouse and that descended from Andery Kerensky - reminding them that he was
a descendant of Andery and by extension of the great Aleksandr Kerensky
himself.

Even then, Kufahl had to win three grueling Trials of Possession, each time
against a pair of Clan Wolf warriors to secure the engine, chassis and armour
data. Injuries in the final Trial - where he faced two Elementals in
unaugmented combat - left Kufahl unable to secure the electronics but even so,
this was a redoubtable success for the warrior.

Within Clan Coyote, the project was originally called the Hunter but in
reference to constellations associated with Orion and to their long friendship
with Clan Wolf, the Clan Council agreed this 'Mech should be named Canis - a
name originally allocated to another design project.


Capabilities:
The basic structure of the Canis is identical to those of the Orion IIC - the
fact that this stands up well after two centuries is testament to the success
of the original design. The electronics are newer and identical to those used
by the new Savage Coyote assault 'Mech.

Concious of Clan Wolf's sensitivity regarding the original design, the Coyotes
have elected not to equip any of the standard configurations to mimic the Orion
IIC.

The primary Canis configuration features a pair of heavy high-speed autocannon
for medium to short ranges while at long ranges two extended range large lasers
only slightly strain the heatsinks.

As an alternative, the A configuration mimics the Woodsman's primary
configuration with LRM racks in the torso and two lasers in each arm. No
machineguns are fitted, instead the 'Mech uses jump-jets and additional
heatsinks.

The B configuration of many Omni-Mechs is used for fire support and the Canis
eschews the common LRM (with their explosive ammunition) for two Gauss Rifles
and a torso-mounted extended range lasers. Careful placement of the weapons
minimises the chances that internal damage will leave the Canis B disabled.

For assaulting positions, the Canis C mounts a pair of PPCs and enough
heatsinks to maintain a constant barrage as it closes in. Once it reaches close
range, the missile launchers in each arm can deploy a shattering volley of
forty-eight SRMs to finish off a target.


Notables:
Silas Kufahl laid claim to the first prototype of the Canis and has indicated
he'll continue to use it even if the Canis isn't chosen by the ilKhan for full
production.

O thought it was Clan Wolfs mech not the yote's mech ah well might have to redo the fluff a bit about the mechs fight and switch it to Clan Yote getting their butts kicked and not the big bad wolf.

Take a look at the first paragraphs of this challenge again LordGrayson it details the history of the Woodsman.  ;)

OK, it looks like I'm the one who breaks the mold this time in using a design that falls outside of the design parameters by going 3/5(6)/0. I traded firepower for speed. If I would have gone 4/6 with no MASC and using the same chassis and armor setup, I would have had about four tons less pod space and that is a lot of firepower to give up. As the adage goes, "Armor, Speed, Firepower: Pick two to make a good design" and that's what I went with. I realize that this will likely cost me the win, given previous results, but I'm not bothered by that fact. The image below would have the side torso weapons switching side and the overall appearance would be more lizard-like. Additionally, this will like be tha last Quad I field as a Zombie as crit space will be a limiting factor as available pod tonnage goes up. with this design I used nearly every crit available on each of the five configs.

Actually if you take a look at the 6th paragraph of the challenge I am hinting we are close to the assault classes and if you build a quad with crits getting tight your solution (smaller engine = slower speed but no need for endosteel or ferro fibrous) is very acceptable. Again I can not tell you guys the answers to the test.  ;)

I've got another design int he works that is a bit more mainstream and not a quad. I'm waiting on MA's next design and which Clan he assigns it to. I've got two in mind, if he chooses one of those two, I'll got with the other. If he chooses both, somehow, I'll have to throw a surprise clan in there.

It's still too early yet to do that.

Yeah a little bit too early right now to say. Still waiting on JPArbiter, MasterArminas, Smegish, and Fitzgerald to get in on this. Plus Shadow Wraith and Dragon Cat may return to the contest. Who knows maybe there are others out there who will throw their hat into the design ring for the first time. I'll let you know by Wednesday if additional entries will be allowed for designers but thanks for the heads up. If anyone else has ideas for multiple entries let me know! ;)

 :)  Okay I was struggling with the fluff and the name for the mech.  I am still going for the Clan Dimond Shark leading a joint Clan Engineering development team.  Here is my mech for the 75 ton Zombie.

The Jaeger Arachnid!

OVERVIEW

After losing several competitions, the group of  Warrior Merchants of Clan Dimond Sharks reevaluated why the lost and what can be done about the next viable category.  Going with the 75ton Zombie category for Operation Quicksilver.   The Warrior Merchants  again contacted several other clan’s to see if they wanted to share the cost of R & D of the prototypes.  Clan Blood Spirit, Goliath Scorpion and Snow Raven.  This time it was agreed that all the participating clans will share in the manufacturing of the parts for the Mechs while, it will be assembled by two Clan’s that has the factory space.

   The four Clan engineering team decided to base the chassis of their 75 ton Zombie mech on Clan Wolf’s Timber Wolf design.   They gathered the worst chassis of the Timber Wolf in all four clan’s and set about redesigning it.  To prevent Clan Wolf from complaining and asking for a Trial of Grievance.  The Khan’s of the four clan’s negotiated with Khan Kerensky for the right to modify and updated the venerable Timber Wolf chassis.  They settled on a Trial of Possession (The payment those clan’s will have to make to Clan Wolf) to be held if the Jaeger Arachnid gets selected as the winner of the 75 ton Zombie trial.  Until then, Clan Wolf will be given a prototype to test on their own.

   With the matter settled for the time being, the engineering group gathered and assembled enough chassis to assemble 28 chassis, a Star of each will go to the participating Clan and to Strana Mechty  for the Operation Quicksilver testing.  The remaing three were given to Clan Wolf for evaluation by their garrison clusters.   The external appearance was engineered to look like the Timber Wolf so it will confuse the enemy targeting and tracking system.

   The name Jaeger Arachnid was chosen because it signifies the mission of the mech to be used primarily by garrison/secondary line units. At the same time to be a deadly mech to be mostly used with other units.

CAPABILITIES

   The mission profile of the Jaeger Arachnid is for the use of the second line forces of the invading Clan’s and as a line omnimech of the more resource poor clan’s.  By basing the chassis on the Timber Wolf, the Warrior Merchant’s of  Clan Dimond Shark are betting the familiarity of using the existing parts of the Timber Wolf to the Jaeger Arachnid will lower the maintenance costs.   MASC and jump jets are included in all the verision to give it the mobility it needs and an anti-missle system is standard in all versions.   And it has 11 tons of Ferro Fiberous armor that provided 91 percent coverage.   

The Prime variant is designed as a general purpose brawler.  It has an LRM 15w/Artermis IV with three tons of ammo.  An ER PPC and a Lg Pulse laser is paired with a Targeting computer.  An SRM 6 Streak with a ton of ammo is used for short range.  Its jump jets gives it an added mobility of jumping 60 meters in any direction. It has 12 double strength heatsinks to help it manange the heat.

   Type A was designed to be a direct fire support unit.  It is armed with a pair of ER PPC for long range fire and a pair of ER Med lasers for short range use with a pair of  SRM 6 and three tons of ammo to back it up.  An MG is mounted on the Arms with a ton of ammo for its use for anti-infantry use. All the direct fire weapons are paired with the Targeting computer.  This model tends to run hot, even with 14 double heatsinks.  The mech warrior piloting this will have to be careful when it wants to fire both ER PPC’s and when it uses its jump jets.

   Type B is designed as a LRM fire support.  It mounts three LRM 15 with Artemis IV and nine tons of ammo to supply it.  An ER Lg laser and a ER Med Laser is added as a back up weapons.  It mounts only ten double heatsinks to help it manage the heat generated.  This reduces the heatsinks to only 10 double strength.

   Type C removes the Targeting computer to lower the costs and is designed as an abusher and close ranged brawler  The Type C retains one LRM 15 and Artemis IV with three tons of ammo for long range engagement,  For medium to short range its armed with 5 ER med lasers and an LB-20X with three tons of ammo.  An ECM is added to this model to help it avoid being found or targeted.

   Type D removes the AMS but retains the ECM and increases its jump jets up to 120 meters.  This model is designed as highly mobile AA model.  On Right arm it mounts a LB-5X with three tons of ammo to back it up and an ER Med laser.  On the Left arm it mounts a Ultra-5AC with four tons of ammo to use and an ER Med laser.  An ER Lg Laser is mounted on the head to give it a extreme long ranged fire.

   Type E has been designed as a escort mech and anti-battle armor unit.  It retains the ECM of the previous model.  This model mounts 13 double heatsinks and reduces the jump capacity to 60 meters. It also keeps the ECM.  Most of the weapons are mounted on the arms,  Each arms contains an ER Lg laser, med pulse laser, a Heavy MG (a ton of ammo is shared for all three MG),  an SRM 4 with a ton of ammo for use and a flamer.  On the left and right torso a med pulse laser and flamer is installed.  The only other difference in the torso is one mounts an AMS and the other the third Heavy MG. 

   Type F is designed as a independent of ammo use.  It mounts 17 heatsinks to help it manage the heat and has a jump capacity of 120 meters.  Each arm mounts an Lg pulse laser and an ER med laser for medium to short range fire.  The arms also mounts a flamer for anti-infantry work or setting urban or wilderness areas on fire.    On the left and right torso an ER Lg laser is added for long range fire.  The ECM was kept to help it being found or targeted. 

DEPLOYMENT

   Each Clan has deployed their Star worth of mechs as a unit with an engineering/technician team to monitor its performance.  Clan Blood Spirit sent their mechs against Clan Burrock forces and fared decently against the highly mobile Burrock forces.  Clan Goliath Scorpion sent its star to be used by the Cateran Cluster in its various traials against other clan’s.  The results so far has been favorable.    Clan Dimond Shark and Snow Raven sent their units against Periphery forces from bandits to forces of the Hanseatic League and the garrison units on Clan Cloud Cobra’s tanite worlds.  Those engineering/technician teams so far has to transmit their results.  The three units sent to Clan Wolf was immediately sent to their Occupation Zone and issued for use by their garrison warriors. This was issued to Star Commanders of three different garrison units. They primarly use either the Prime variant or the Type E model for anti-infantry work.

the Arctic Horror is Clan Coyote's attempt top outdo itself and their Wolf allies dramatically.  so dramatic was this entry into Quicksilver that it was named not after some beast among the homeworlds, but instead a massive and powerful predator from the Inner Sphere World of Kountze.  Tactically the Arctic Horror borrows heavily from the Hammerhands of House Davion fame.  the Hammerhands was a heavy mech that was built for average speed during the age of war, but was never upgraded to a faster or mor advanced engine then the 225 standard.  eventually this mech was out deployed by the Warhammer produced by the Terran hegemony which used a faster 280 engine.  Scientist engineers evaluating the design postulated that the Warhammer was on a tactical level INFERIOR to the Hammerhands despite the speed advantage, and that only Hegemony backed economies of scale permitted the WHM to replace the HMH.

to save time on developing the Arctic Horror, the WOD Chassis that Clan Wolf was directly speaking of revitalizing was used again.  making up for the smaller engine meant that components of the cooling system had to be spread to the adjacent torsos as well, somewhat limiting torso podspace by comparison. the MASC module was also removed, even further limiting the mechs speed. the tradeoff however was an endowment of 40 tons of podspace, over half of the available tonnage of the entire mech. 

The Primary Configuration is a flat combination of the two most potent and frightening mechs ever to grace the battbefield (particularly when paired together) the Warhammer and the Archer.  By no means the most heat efficient machine on the face of the Touman, the Prime is built to defend garrison's and toumans, utilizing Long Range Missiles to soften it's prey, indirectly if possible, and then engaging with Particle Cannons as the range closes.

Alternate configuration A B and C Were based on a Scientist cast proposal for a lighter design with the same podspace as the Arctic Horror.  designed for long range dueling, Multi Threat Warfare, and Anti Aircraft/Anti Vehicle/Anti Battle Armor operations respectivly.

Alternate Configuration D and E are more directly based on the Hammerhands that the Coyote Engineer and Scientists studied before they proposed the horror.  the D Configuration has longer reach and hits mechs hardest.  E is closer, and more capable of shredding conventional assets and aircraft, though it's hard hitting cannons can equally bruise mechs.

Alternate Configuration F is a brainchild of a captured Horses Warrior/Scientist to create an artillery platform that can also function as a command mech.  a Centerline Large Pulse Laser is the only weapon outside the Arrow IV, as an acknowledgment that occasionally a warrior must defend itself.  the keystone aside from the Arrow IVs is the communications suite that can coordinate a whole trinary.  again this is a role that most warriors scoff, but when compared to well coordinated brigades on Twycross and Wolcott, and again at Tukkyid, "the need for warriors to think and act as one is all the more important then ever."

Configuration G is built on the same principle as the Kraken 3.  throw a full ton of Long Range Missiles down range every 10 seconds.  Heat and durability is a concern, but given this mech is built to be static and preferably behind cover of both terrain and starmates that should be overcome, particularly if a warrior is willing to ease up on the trigger every so often.

Configuration H is designed to close at a steady pace. a deep binned gauss rifle and ERPPC provide long rnage punch, and once range closes, a staggering five SRM 4 packs unleash devastation to damaged units or elementals.  two Centerline Medium lasers provide protection even in catastrophic circumstances for the Horror.

Configuration I is a Heavy Anti Airtcraft platform, with targeting computer guided 88mm cannons and an ER PPC backing them up.  an ECM Suite provides protection against advanced targeting systems and jump jets permit the mech to get into prime position.
