Overview:
Clan Cloud Cobra, like several other Clans, was eager to to gain a chance to
seek the honor of producing a new winning design for IlKhan Kerensky's
Operation Quicksilver program. As one of the smaller Clans they lack both
resources and infrastructure to produce some of the more advanced designs and
had to settle for cheaper and more efficient tech ologies to compete in this
program. The competition for an 80-ton design featuring a non-extralight fell
under the oversight of Star Captain Delindo Halstead of the 97th Cobra Guards.
Star Captain Halstead, was given this task personally by Loremaster Eleni Riaz.
In order to fastrack this program, Star Captain Halstead decided that a few
developmental corners had to be cut in order to get the design done in the
required amount of time. With the permission of his cluster commander and the
Khan, Halstead journeyed to Arcadia and issued a challenge to Clan Star Adder
for the chassis schematics for the Naga OmniMech and a Star's worth of empty
chassis. They chose the Star Adder as they were the only producers of the Naga
in the Pentagon worlds. His team of scientists only needed the empty chassis as
they were not going to be using the burdensome 400XL powerplant that the Naga
used.
Halstead and the binary of assault Mechs he bid into the fight defeated the
Star Adder force arrayed against. Unfortunately, Star Captain Halstead was
injured in the process when he was forced to eject from his damaged
Executioner. While his body adjusts to his new bionic arm, he still oversees
the design team working on Project Horus.
With the chassis now in place, Halstead's team of scientist led Senior
Scientist Winston set to making the Horus into an improved version of the Naga.
With extralight powerplant not being in use, Winston and his stripped a number
of Warhammer IIC's of their powerplants and mounted them in the Naga chassis,
which, with a few minor adjustments, fit well into the torso. Next came the
armor application. The Naga originally came with nine tons of standard armor,
which was totally inadequate for frontline service. Winston and his scientists
replaced that with twelve-and-a-half tins of ferro fibrous armor which was just
short of the meximum amount an 80-ton chassis could carry.
Aesthetically, they wanted the Horus to resemble its namesake Egyptian god.
With a bit of artistic license, the area around the cockpit and uppertorso was
made to represent the the hawk-like visage that represented the god Horus.
Variants:
With a total of thirty-two tons of pod space available, the Horus had more pod
space than the faster Gargoyle and the larger Executioner, both mainstays
of the Clans and was less vulnerable to internal damage due to the placement of the
standard fusion engine. As project overseer, Star Captain Halstead reserved the right to
configure the Prime to himself. Using his favorite configuration of the Executioner,
the A model, as the basis for this configuration. It differed only in the number of large
pulse lasers it carried. Mounting only two, the Prime replaced the third pulse laser with
an ER large laser so that same number of double heat sinks could be carriedin the Horus
Prime as there were in the Executioner A. All other weapons stayed the same, though the
layout was slightly more uniform due to the allocation of heat sinks and themounting of
the ER Large laser in the head. Four jump jets are mounted to main the mobility of the
Executioner A that Star Captain Halstead preferred.
The Alpha is the heavy striker featuring a Gauss rifle paired with an ER PPC
and is designed with the 'one shot, one kill' mentality of the Clan warrior in
mind. The Gauss is fed by a four-ton ammo bay for prolonged fights against both
Clan and Spheroid oponents. The cobras read the reports of pooe logistics being
one of downfalls during the Battle of Tukayyid and wanted to eliminate the
issue as muchas possible. A Streak SRM-6 and a trion of medium pulse laser
provide the necessary back up weapons for the Alpha's big guns.
The Beta is an homage to the Warhawk and features a quartet of ER large laser
mated to a targeting computer. While the armament may not be of the pulse
variety like the Warhawk, the Beta has the ability to inflcit significant
damage to an enemy mech. A total of eight double heat sinks have been added to
help mitigate the heat generated by the large lasers.
The Gamma features a Class 20 LB-X autocannon as its main weapon. This huge gun
is fed by a four-ton ammo bay which can carry any variety of ammo the mech's
pilot prefers. To allow the Horus to close with the enemy, an Artemis
IV-equipped twenty-tube LRM launcher with three tons of ammunition is mounted
in the left torso. A quartet of pulse lasers, three medium and a small, provide
the secondary support for the Horus Gamma.
The arm-mounted weapons of the Delta are reminiscent of the ancient Marauder as
each arm is fitted with an ER PPC and an ER medium laser. A pair of Streak
SRM-4s provide additional close quarters support. Eight additional heat sinks
go along way to ridding the heat buld up of the main battery. Heat concerns only arise
when the Horus brings the ER medium lasers into firing range. At this point it is up
to the pilot in the cockpit to maintain heat discipline. Of course, this may not be an issue,
as a good Clan mechwarrior should have already eliminated the enemy before getting
too close for the medium laser to beocme necessary.
The Epsilon configuration is a tribute to the Naga, which gave life to the
Horus. Aingle Arrow IV aartillery missile laucnher is carried on the right side
of the Hours and is fed by a foru-ton ammo bin that can carry all types of
ammunition available to the pilot. The secondary armament can be traced back to
the Helepolis artillery battlemech used during the Star League, which has been
updated to more modern technology. Two missile delivery systems are used and
feature Artmeis IV fire control system. The LRM-15 and SRM-6 provide additonal
fire support to the Arrow IV system. As an additonal backup, a pair of ER
lasers, one large and one medium, are carried.
The final configuration, the Zeta, is another configuration created by Star
Captain Halstead and is a tribute to the Rifleman II that his original
ancestor, Danila Halstead, used during Operation Klondike. The large pulse
laser stayed due to thier superior accuracy and range. Unable to mount the twin
LB 10-X autocannons due to weight considerations, a pair of Class-5 LB-X
autocannons were mounted instead, Each of these autocannons has a two-ton
ammunition bay. A brace of ER medium lasers are the only other weapons carried
by the Zeta.
