Quicksilver Program #14: 80 ton Vampire OmniMech

After four Zombie design challenges in row we are changing things up this time around with a call for an 80 ton Vampire (Assailant). Incredibly this is only our second contest that will feature this type of OmniMech. For those who do not remember Vampires maximize pod space at the expense of all else concentrating on offensive firepower. As such nearly half of this machine’s mass or more should be reserved for pod space so Extra Light engines are a must. Since this is an assault weight machine the 3/5 movement minimum is in effect but since the Gargoyle (Man O’War) is the 80 ton Werewolf the 4/6 profile is also opened. Integral jump jets could also work here to improve this assault class Omnis maneuverability.

Costs should be mid range (less than a Werewolf but more than a Zombie) and use of existing material (such as XL Engines from other designs) would still be a nice touch as the Clans always look to maximize resources. I love to hear about Clan components already in use, like the engines, which have been included in the design to lower costs and speed development. Please do not force equipment that does not exist like trying to retrofit an InnerSphere XL into a Clan XL. That does not save time or effort. What I am looking for ideally is Clan components already in production either from Mechs, Fighters, or Vehicles.

Remember it is all or nothing here. Kill or be killed so this machine should threaten almost any target with its available arsenal. Unlike the stigma attached to the Zombie I think the Vampire is preferred in Clan frontline service. Perhaps older trueborn warriors looking for a glorious end or those deadliest of killers looking for an edge would go for this design. It would be rare for these machines to see second line service but perhaps in certain circumstances I could see it. Almost every Clan could make a case for building this one so your options are wide opened. Burrock, Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar, and Wolf are out as they have filled up their production quota.

Again tell me which Clan built and why? It does not hurt to mention other Clans helping or challenging for possession either. Certainly the Coyotes and Diamond Sharks are poised to strike as this contest is in their wheel house. Nova Cat and Snow Raven are still possible but may not have the need. Jade Falcon and Smoke Jaguar who are the leading Crusaders are maxed out but could they seek allies to help them build a new Vampire. Goliath Scorpion is still struggling for their first Quicksilver design while Cloud Cobra, Hell’s Horses and Ice Hellion only got one. While you are picking a designing Clan keep in mind that another major point in the submission process, the name. The name of your entry is a big deal as more then one designer has found out. Accepted naming conventions for the Quicksilver Program include two major criteria from this point forward. Star League Standard English is a must at this point in Clan history for your presentation. They take great pride in their language and will not pollute it with contractions or foreign ‘Mech names. Also do not name your design after a Clan. I personally dislike the whole totem Mech idea and for the united Quicksilver Program such pomp pomps will be bounced by the ilKhan.

The winning entry will be featured in my FedCom Forever universe which is outlined in my Clarion Call fanfic. Technical Readout 3054: Quicksilver Program is really shaping up thanks to your participation. It will feature all the contest winners, some other notables, and tell us what the Clans of this alternate universe are up to. With every contest we get closer and closer to a finished product.

I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program as it makes things easier on me. I am looking forward to seeing what ideas are developed here and hopefully I can build on them in my fanfic. Any questions or more information can be obtained by simply contacting me at anytime. Here we go, first one in the chute again and with an Ice Hellion offering to wet the appetites of my fellow posters. And, yes, you read correctly that is 43 tons of pod space on a 80 ton chassis (53.75% of mass). Feel the BOOM! I get the name of this Mech from the Vampire theme and from the original 'Nightstalker' TV show with Darren McGavin. That show scared the crap out of me as young kid.

Overview:
When Star Colonel Damon Hawkins, a Ghost Bear abtakha, was given the command of
the Clan Ice Hellion's Thirty-third Striker Irregulars, he was also given the
task of rebuilding the cluster from the its shattered remains following the
Hellion's Fury campaign. The only Mech's that survived were a variety of heavy
and assault OmniMechs. This pleased Hawkins as he favored these types of Mechs
in his tactics. However, the Clan was finding it difficult to procure these
Mechs from the usual sources, Clan Diamond Shark and trials of possession.

Star Colonel Hawkins, with the tacit support of Galaxy Commander Drew
Norizuchi, issued a proposal to Khan Tyler and SaKhan Lienet to develop a new
OmniMech for the Clan and for the IlKhan's Quicksilver Program. His proposal
would include the team that developed the Lithe Kill/Quicksilver OmniMechs.
After a somewhat heated debate, Hawkins and SaKhan Lienet were able to convince
Khan Tyler that this would be in the best interest of Clan Ice Hellion and, as
an added benefit, the rest of the Clans.

Hawkins then met with Senior Scientist Timo Heisenberg, the head of the
successful Quicksilver design team, who assigned a pair of his best
subordinates, Scientist Kasha and Mirko, the task of turning Star Colonel
Hawkins' idea into reality. Using assorted pieces of salvage and isorla, the
two scientist and their technicians fused the torsos of several antiquated
Woodsman Omnimechs to the legs of salvaged Warhawks. They were able to create
three working chassis to test their prototypes.

The next challenge was the powerplant, which turned out to be less of a
challenge that origanlly thought. Again, using salvage, the pulled a sufficient
number of powerplants from Thirty-third's wrecked Viper OmniMechs. A half dozen
powerplants were secured for use in what was becoming known as the Nightstalker
project. Scientist Mirko, like a typical Ice Hellion, wanted to add a MASC
system, but Star Colonel Hawkins vetoed this choice in favor of added
firepower, However, Hawkins did acquiesce to Mirko's suggestion of keeping the
armor layout limited to ten-and-a-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor as it agreed
with his need for more firepower.

After reviewing the battleroms from the Battle of Tukayyid and other actions
from Operation Revival, Scientist Kasha added an ECM suite to scramble the
enemy's electronics and added a pair of anti-personnel pods to discourage the
use of standard infantry in anti-mech attacks. These additions left the
Nightstalker with forty-three tons of available pod space, which is more than
fifty pecent of the Omnimech's intended mass.

Aesthtically, with it's bird-like legs and humanoid torso, the Nightstalker has an
unusual appearance. And given that this design is meant to fill the role of an
assailant, one of the lesser technicians thought that it would be best to give this
new Omnimech a visage that instills fear in the enemy much like a creature from
one's nightmares would do. An horrifyingly ugly face with large gnashing teeth are
formed on the Nightstalker's armor around the cockpit (think Nosferatu, the
original movie vampire).


Variants:
With the exeptional amount of pod space to work with, Scientists Kasha and
Mirko had a free reign to explore as many as options as they could fit on this
new chassis. The Able variant feature the heavy hitting Gauss Rifle mounted
each arm with fed by a pair pf cavernous ammunition bays. Primary backup comes
from a pair of six-tube Streak SRM launchers and a quartet of ER medium lasers.
another pair of ER small lasers are rearmounted in the side torsos to
discourage battle armor and infantry attacks

The Bravo variant is a variation of the Able and features a pair of Class-20
Ultra autocannons mounted with ER large lasers in the arms. A total of eight
tons of ammunition feeds the hungry autocannons allowing for a prolonged
presence on the battlefield. A pair of small pulse lasers act as the only
backup weapons for the Bravo.

The Charlie is a variation of the Bravo's laser/autocannon layout, this time
pairing the large pulse laser with a Class 10 LB-X autocannon in each arm. The
ammunition bay is smaller than that for the Ultras, but it will keep the Charlie
in the field longer than the Bravo. A pair each of ER medium and small pulse
laser provide additonal fire suppoert with the small pulse lasers mounted to
the rear.

The Delta variant features a brace of powerful ER PPCs paired with the Class 5
LB-X autocannon. Each autocannon is fed by a two-ton ammunition bay that allows
the Delta to stay in the filed longer than the Bravo or Charlie variants. For
additional long range fire support a ten-tube LRM launcher is mounted in each
side torso with two tons of ammunition available to the two launchers. Two
small pulse lasers share space in the arms with the PPC and autocannon to aid
in short range defense.

The Echo variant is an unusual conglomeration of weaponry featuring a Class 20
Ultra autocannon as the main weapon. It features the same four-ton ammunition
bin of the Bravo variant, but only one autocannon is mounted. Long-range fire
support comes from two different weapons, a pair of fifteen-tube LRM launchers
with the Artemis IV FCS and a pair of large pulse lasers. No other weapons are
carried to support the Echo variant.

The next two variants are notfavored by Star Colonel Hawkins, but he thinks that
some of the Invader Clans might find some small interest in the artillery
weapons carried. The Foxtrot variant features the Arrow IV artilley missile
launcher with four tons of ammunition available to the launcher. Should the
Foxtrot get too close to the enemy it has an impressive array of weapons to
discourage the enemy from battling the Foxtrot. An ER PPC shares the left arm
with a Class 10 Ultra autocannon with three tons ofammunition available for the
autocannon. For additional protection a large pulse laser and a pair of small pulse
lasers, one of which is mounted to the rear for anti-infantry defense.

The Golf variant is the most controversial variant of the seven being submitted
for the IlKhan's program. The main weapon is a Thumper artillery cannon
stripped from a Marksman found in a cache on Hector. Three tons of ammunition
can keep the Golf in the field for a considerable amount of time. Like the
Foxtrot, the Golf's secondary weapons are rather extensive and powerful. A
gauss rifle with a three-ton ammunition bay is the main secondary armament.
This powerful weapon is backed up by a pair of large lasers, one each of pulse
and extended range. There are no short-ranged backup weapons for the Golf and
none are truly needed.

Overview:
Clan Coyote's Canis programme had suffered setbacks with the withdrawal of some
resources to build their unsuccessful 75-ton Canis OmniMech. Although the
original plan was to build the 80-ton Canis (now also needing a name not
tainted by defeat) around the SXC endosteel structure, this had fallen behind
schedule. The engine, at least was ready - while Clan Wolf weren't willing to
share their 240XL engine, the Snow Ravens had long used them for the Clint IIC
and were happy to contract to provide engines since this would get them a cut
of the profits as a subcontractor.

A fresh view was needed and a team from the Savage Coyote project were brought
in to provide it. Their recommendation was to take the engine and the
electronics (already shared with their own design), placing them on an existing
frame and then wrap the result in the recently developed Compound CL20
ferro-fibrous armour.

Although it didn't offer the same weight savings as the SXC would, this would
let the Coyotes show-case their first domestically built ferro-fibrous armour,
something they'd usually neglected and likely wouldn't use on any other heavier
designs due to the bulk.

Rather than building a new chassis, the Coyotes pulled frames out of storage
using the proven Technicron Type G chassis used by the famously sturdy Awesome
assault 'Mech. Many of these remained available despite centuries of attrition
and the rumours of an Awesome IIC being developed suggest that compatible parts
will be available for some time to come. This logically suggested the new name:
Fearsome.


Capabilities:
With 12.5 tons of Compound CL20 wrapped around it, the Fearsome carries as much
protection as the Awesome or the original draft of the Canis. The XL fusion
reactor leaves a highly respectable 47.5 tons for weapon payload. Some
discussion was had about reducing armour coverage to free up more weapon
tonnage but ultimately it was decided the Fearsome needed to be able to survive
long enough to make full use of its armament.

The Primary configuration starts from the Awesome with a brace of ER PPCs.
Rather than a third PPC in one arm, both arms mount weapons, a Gauss Rifle in
the right arm and a LB-X autocannon. A rear-mounted small laser provides some
defense against 'back-stabbing'.

In A configuration the Fearsome is focused on short-range combat. Both arms
mount heavy, high-speed autocannon capable of shredding many 'Mechs in seconds.
To complement these, a pair of pulse lasers sit on one side of the chest for
long range support and SRM launcher mirrors them as a finisher.

The Fearsome's B configuration concentrates armament in the arms: each mounts
an ultra autocannon, a LRM rack and a pulse laser, giving excellent arc of
fire. Additional heatsinks allow these to be fired constantly, which can lead
to ammunition running short. A small laser in one leg provides some supplement
to the pulse lasers when this happens.

The Fearsome C mounts jumpjets for a limited boost to agility in rough terrain,
although they can only manage 60 metres at best. The C runs warm, with an ER
PPC, Gauss Rifle and two large lasers as primary armament. An array of medium
and small lasers supplement them at close quarters.

The D configuration sports two kinds of autocannon as well as a Gauss Rifle,
providing diverse and cool-running firewpower. Supplementing this are four
extended range lasers for short and medium-range combat.


Battle History:
There is absolutely no truth to the allegations that saKhan Sullivan Koga used
a Fearsome in a Trial of Refusal to stop Khan Robin Steele from launching a
Trial of Possession against Clan Coyote for a certain Technican involved in the
'Hellfury debacle'. It's true the Khan was hospitalised after encountering a
Fearsome A but the saKhan has confirmed this was merely a regular Trial to
maintain their warrior status, neither having participated in recent combat
operations.

WIDOWMAKER



Overview:
Although Clan Wolf was prohibited from further participation in Project QUICKSILVER by order of the ilKhan (and lack of excess production capacity), Khan Natasha Kerensky was keen to add a new tool to the arsenal of Clan Wolf.  Although the Wolf Touman was powerful, Khan Kerensky believed that it had focused far too much on speed . . . and Khan Phelan Ward advocating increasing that speed even further with the new Linebacker and Phantom OmniMechs he had pushed into production.

With the sole exception of the Dire Wolf, Clan Wolf lacked a single OmniMech that combined heavy armor protection with moderate speed and exceptional (in Clan terms) firepower.  What Natasha Kerensky desired was what Project QUICKSILVER termed a 'Vampire' . . . a heavily-armed OmniMech slightly slower than Clan norms, but with enough firepower to make any potential opponent think twice.

To many in Clan Wolf, their Touman already incorporated such . . . the 100-ton Dire Wolf.  But Natasha desired an OmniMech slightly faster, one that would not overly slow down the fast-moving Wolf Touman.  An OmniMech similar to the Jade Falcon and Smoke Jaguar Warhawk, but one with a distinctly Wolf flavor.

In March of 3052, Khan Kerensky met with Khan Bjorn Jorgensson of Clan Ghost Bear at the Wolf forward headquarters on Tamar.  There, she suggested that the two Clans pool their resources to produce a new OmniMech . . . citing the Clan Ghost Bear need for an intermediate design between the 60-ton Mad Dog and the 95-ton Executioner. 

This new OmniMech, which Khan Kerensky named the "Widowmaker" with a laughing grin, would mass 80-tons and use a modified Type BMH-7 endo-steel chassis produced by Clan Wolf for the Naga Artillery OmniMech.  Designated as the BMH-7/b, the new frame would differ in appearance, being sleeker and more rounded than the Naga (and its Woodsman predecessor).

In return, the Ghost Bears would provide the Light Force 320 Fusion Extralight engine from their Viper assembly lines, along with Compound 12A2-B2 standard armor from the Kodiak production facilities .  All told, this would allow the Widowmaker to walk at speeds of 43.2 kilometers per hour and run at 64.8 kph . . . the same as the 85-ton Warhawk.  Furthermore, the design would incorporate a Shield-3 Antimissile System and a ton of ammunition as fixed equipment, along with eleven double-strength heat sinks banked within the engine core.

This would leave the Widowmaker with 40.0 tons of available pod-space . . . 7.5 tons more than the Warhawk, although when the 20 integral DHS of the Warhawk are included (along with the Widowmaker's fixed AMS) actual effective war-load of the two designs is remarkably similar (42.5 tons apiece).

The Widowmaker, however, would be slightly less consuming in resources to produce and maintain than the heavier Warhawk . . . and it would fall squarely within the weight range for an OmniMech that Clan Ghost Bear desperately needed.

After much discussion with his saKhan, Loremaster, Scientists, and senior Blood-named, Jorgensson agreed to the proposal.  Part of the Kingfisher production lines on Strana Mechty would be retooled to produce the Widowmaker; furthermore, to save time and make full use of available resources, the new OmniMech would incorporate the Model 74/129.3 TCS communications array and the S438 Mk. IIII Mod. 7 TTS targeting & tracking array from the Kingfisher.

Natasha Kerensky agreed . . . insisting ONLY that the Ghost Bears MUST name the new OmniMech the Widowmaker . . . and that Clan Wolf would have full production rights as well as the right to purchase completed Widowmakers at cost, not market value.

In May the deal was finalized and work began on the Widowmaker in truth by a team of Scientists from both Clans as well as a small stable of test-pilot Warriors/advisors.


Capabilities
Massing 80-tons, the Widowmaker features an endo-steel internal structure, fifteen tons of standard armor, and a 320-rate extra-light fusion engine, combined with a fixed head mounted Anti-Missile System with a ton of ammo (stored in the center torso) and eleven integral double-strength heat sinks.  This leaves the design with 40.0 tons (50% of the OmniMechs total mass!) available for pod-mounted weapons, munitions, and equipment.

Configuration Prime carries a Gauss Rifle in the left arm with three tons of ammo (24 shots), while the right arm features an ER PPC.  An ER Medium Laser is fitted to the right torso, alongside a four-ton targeting computer making these weapons more accurate in nature.  The left torso features an LRM-20 with Artemis IV fire-control systems and four tons of ammunition (24 salvoes).  Fifteen double-strength heat sinks makes the design heat-neutral and able to deliver a blistering fusillade of fire for extended periods.

Configuration A is based on the Ghost Bear second-line Grizzly BattleMech (long a favorite of Clan Ghost Bear).  Four Standard 14X Series jump-jets are installed for a maximum jump capacity of 120 meters.  Once again, a Gauss Rifle with three tons of ammunition is fitted to the left arm.  The right arm carries a Large Pulse Laser, with two Medium Pulse Lasers in the left torso.  Rather than a long-range missile rack, the Widowmaker A instead carries two Streak SRM-6 launchers in the right torso sharing a ton of ammunition (15 missile salvoes).  Fourteen DHS elminates all but movement heat on an Alpha-strike with both Streak packs locking onto target.  Finally, Scientists from Clan Ghost Bear and Clan Wolf fitted an ECM Suite to the left torso.

Configuration B is (loosely) based on the Kodiak 100-ton standard BattleMech.  The right torso features a massive LB-20X autocannon with three tons of ammo (15 bursts).  Each arm carries four lasers, one ER Large and three Medium Pulse.  Sixteen double-strength heat sinks are fitted, which are enough to allow the Widowmaker B to fire the two ER Large Lasers and the LB-20X autocannon while running and remain heat neutral.  In close, the Warrior assigned to this war-machine can instead substitute the six Medium Pulse Lasers to double his effective damage for the same generated heat levels.

And finally, Configuration C is a heavy bombardment unit featuring massed LRM and SRM launchers.  Four LRM-15s and two SRM-6s (all with Artemis IV) are fitted to the torsos and arms.  Ten tons of ammunition provides reserves for one good fight, while fifteen DHS allow the Warrior to fire a full salvo of seventy-two missiles and generate only movement heat.  Two ER Medium and two ER Small Lasers were added to ensure that the Warrior has some non-ammunition dependent weapons at his disposal.

Nah, I'm good. It's just a quad that won't even come close to winning due to its paltry 36 tons of pod space with it's 4/6 movement and it literally leaves no mnything else. I'll post it after this contest runs its course.

The rejection of the Seeker was a blow to Goliath Scorpion morale, and the Khans immediately ordered a cessation to all further development while they contemplated options, including but not limited to openly defying the ilKhan and developing the Seeker for their own Touman anyway.  This left the future of their Assault grade Mech in serious doubt, until the schematics and computer models were trialed for by Clan Cloud Cobra, who also had been feeling the sort end of the Quicksilver judgments.

The Darksteel was designed for Protracted engagements at extended ranges more then anything else.  Goliath Scorpion fighting techniques tend to show as despite the Omnimechs potential, each configuration can best be described as a generalist.  the frame was based on a heavily modified Marauder IIC chassis, slimmed down for weight and the engines were supposed to be trialed for from Clan Ghost Bears Dragonfly, the only other mech in production to use a 320 XL Engine.

The Primary Configuration favors a slow advance towards a fixed position.  a combination large pulse laser and Gauss rifle, both with targeting assistance, act as the primary long range firepower.  an LRM ten is meant for harassment at the same range.  for up close work paired ER Medium lasers and Streak SRM 4s follow up nicely to the damage the longer ranged weapons provide.  to assist in a steady advanced Jump jets were added and a full electronics suite act as a force multiplier unheard of for a heavy unit.  the one disadvantage to the Primary is the half ton of unused mass, a direct result of lack of space to utilize it.

Alternate Configuration A appears to be geared towards long range direct fire support with Ultra 5 autocannons built up in the arms and large pulse lasers in the torsos.  backing up these weapons are two LRM 20 racks in massive Boxes borrowed from the Timber Wolf.  computer models predicted that even with updated warbooks, a battlemechs targeting system will encounter the same errors that Inner Sphere Warriors encounterd with the Timber Wolf until 3052, and mistake the Darksteel A for a Timber Wolf Prime up to 7.42% of the time.

Alternate B is meant for heavy anti mech warfare, with ERPPCs providing the Bulk of the Firepower.  twin LB-10X Autocannons mounts borrowed from the second line Predator suppliment the PPCs and provide anti elemental/Vehicle firepower.

Alternate C is borrowed from a Trialed for Schematic from Clan Fade Falcon, originally "Project Jupiter" was supposed to revive the Wakazashi frame, but there was never a pressing need for such a mech.  The weapons package proved interesting enough for the Scorpions to attempt the build however.

Called "A Huncback on Steroids" by Khan Phelan Ward, the D Configuration was made for close in brawling. Assault grade LB-X Autocannons can wither opponents to dust and deep ammunition Bins permit a minute and a half of fire.  placing the cannons in the torso prevents the D from being a 100% effective AA Platform, but when oriented correctly can still make low altitude strikes a nightmare for aerospace pilots.  the six medium pulse lasers supplementing the cannons allow for near matching firepower when the cannons are silenced.

Finally Alternate Configuration E is a dedicated Missile Support unit.  Again taking an appearance similar to the Timber Wolf, the four LRM 15s with Artyimes Fire Control can place a hail of missiles where they need to be at any given monent.  large over medium pulse lasers in the arm only increase the confusion of Battle computers as it is a more traditional arraignment then the Timber Wolf.

Actually, it doesn't matter, due to the limitations on crits, especially in the assault class, weight is pretty much limited to the 35-38 ton range. A Zombie means you're moving 3/5, while Vampire or werewolf gets you the XL and 4/6. All three types would have to have standard chassis and armor to maximize crit space.

Here's the Sabretooth to show the weight limitations. While it is a powerful machine, it does come up short in pod space (4 less tons than any current entry) and overall desirability by warriors in general. Quads are great as specialized second line mechs, but have less appeal in the frontlines. the Balius is the exception, not the norm,
