Quicksilver Program #15: 85 ton Zombie OmniMech

So here we are in the 85 ton category with only one Clan OmniMech to design. We already had the Warhawk (Masakari) going into the initial invasion. Introduced in 2999 by the Smoke Jaguars this Werewolf is equipped with a 340XL (4/6) and can carry 32.5 tons of weaponry. Work was accelerated on the Savage Coyote which will serve as the Clans’ 85 ton Vampire thanks to Quicksilver. This developing Coyote is equipped with a 255XL (3/5) and will carry 45 tons of weaponry. So what we need is the Clan 85 ton Zombie.

Again I like to hear about Clan components already in use, like the engines, which have been included in the design to lower costs and speed development. Also remember that Zombies are looked down on by some Clanners. Many refuse to use them or at best will place them in second line service often placing these relics into reserve rather than use them. However these cheap, endurance based designs can be easily manufactured by poorer Clans. This could be the last best shot for a Clan frontline Quad as there is a model already in production that could help here.

With only five remaining Trails the competition is getting intense between Clans that are still short. What to do about Goliath Scorpion? Perhaps Diamond Shark will sell the Sand Devil back to the Scorpions but this would leave them with only one OmniMech in full scale production. Coyote and Hell’s Horses are in the same boat as the Sharks who can do a lot more but thus far been beaten by other Clans. Only Wolf, Smoke Jaguar, Jade Falcon and Burrock have topped out their industrial commitment so there are plenty of Clans out there still looking to earn more of a share as well as win additional glory.

While you are picking a designing Clan keep in mind that another major point in the submission process, the name. The name of your entry is a big deal as more then one designer has found out. Accepted naming conventions for the Quicksilver Program include two major criteria from this point forward. Star League Standard English is a must at this point in Clan history for your presentation. They take great pride in their language and will not pollute it with contractions or foreign ‘Mech names. Also do not name your design after a Clan. I personally dislike the whole totem Mech idea and for the united Quicksilver Program such pomp pomps will be bounced by the ilKhan.

The winning entry will be featured in my FedCom Forever universe which is outlined in my Clarion Call fanfic. Technical Readout 3054: Quicksilver Program is really shaping up thanks to your participation. It will feature all the contest winners, some other notables, and tell us what the Clans of this alternate universe are up to. With every contest we get closer and closer to a finished product.

I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program as it makes things easier on me. I've been waiting for this to start up, now I can go watch some NFL. Here's one for the Mandrills. I hope you like it. It would have been up sooner, but I was working on my 90-ton Vampire's fluff as well as trying afew things with the 95 and 100-ton challenges. One of those last three is going to be a doozy.

Overview:
The more aggressive Crusader elements of Clan Fire Mandrill were in a need for
a new assault class OmniMech to increase the sizes of their repective Kindraa
toumans. Kindraas Sainze, Kline and Mick-Kreese came together to design this
new OmniMech shortly after the Operation Revival invasion fleet left the
Homeworlds. The going was slow as long-held rivalries undermined any progress
they made. By the time IlKhan Kerensky announced his Quicksilver Initiative
they had four working prototypes of the new Silverback OmniMech. Using elements
of the Wakazashi's chassis, mainly the upper torso, combined with the legs of
the Warhawk, modified to use endo-steel technology and a different aesthetic,
the Mandrill scientists led by Senior Scientist Laura Watt of the Kline kindraa
managed to come up with several configurations based on antiquated designs from
the Star League era.

The Silverback is carried along by a Series 255 engine that was originally
mounted in the Stalker battlemech and was kept in storage pending future need.
Additionally, three jump jets are permanently affixed to the Silverback's
chassis. This gives the new OmniMech increased mobility in confined terrain,
which is lacking in most of the other assault Omnimechs amongst the Clans. The
addition of a fixed MASC unit gives the Silverback that added burst should it
need to close with an enemy or manuever into a better fight position.

When it came to designin the configuration for the Silverback, Watt and her
staff looked to the past in order to move into the future. All five configurations
are based on battlemechs from the time of the original exodus to the Homeworlds
following the bringing down of the Usurper. With thirty-nine tons of pod space ready
for use, several intriguing configurations were developed by Watt and her associates.


Configurations:
The Prime configuration is based on the Royal BLR-1Gb Battlemaster and features
clan technology versions of the original's weapons. A pair of ER PPCs and a
large pulse laser make up the main battery of weapons. Rather than upgrading
all of the medium lasers to ER equivalents, Watt's team decided to upgrade two
of them to extended-range models, while the other two were merged into a medium
pulse laser. A total of thirteen double heat sinks have to been added to handle
the tremendous heat load, but it is not enough to handle a possible alpha
strike.

Alternate configuration A is based on the Armament of the much larger Royal
version of the King Crab. All of the weapons are the same, but like all of the
configurations, it features modern equivalents. The standard pair of Class 20
autocannons have been upgraded to an Ultra and a an LB-X autocannons. Both
weapons are fed by three-ton ammunition bins. An ER large laser and a ten-tube
LRM launcher account for the long-range fire support that can gets this
configuration closer to the enemy and bring the big guns into the fray. An ER
small laser is added for anti-infantry combat.

Alternate configuration B is based on the Longbow missile Battlemech and
features a quartet of LRM launchers, a pair each fifteen- and twenty-tube
systems, equipped with the Artemis IV fire control system. A total of ten tons
of ammunition allow for a prolonged battlefield presence. A trio of medium
pulse lasers provide the only secondary weapons for this configuration.

Using the Royal version of the Crockett as the base for the loadut of the C
configuration. A gauss rifle is carried in the right arm along with a three-ton
ammo bin. Three tons of ammunition should be sufficient to keep a disciplined
pilot on the field for a long time. A brace of ER large lasers along with an ER
medium laser are mounted in the left while two medium pulse lasers and two ER
medium lasers are split between the side torsos, A total of nine heat sinks
have been added to deal with heat buildup.

The final version is the general trooper version of the Silverback is based on
the battlemech that supplied the powerplant, the Stalker. A pair of ten-tube
Artemis IV-equipped LRM launchers are mounted in the arms. Four lasers, a pair
each of ER mediums and small pulses, share the arms with the missile launchers.
The two side torsos feature an ER large laser and a six-tube Streak SRM
launcher each. A total of seven double heat sinks help mitigate the heat build
up generated by this variants weapon's loadout.

Overview:
Although on opposite sides of the Crusader/Warden split, Clans Blood Spirit and
Goliath Scorpion have points in common. Both in the bottom tier of the Clans
and sharing a focus on a past era of glory, they've not had close contact in
decades.

During the Grand Council debates following Tukkayid, saKhan Daryl Keller of
Clan Blood Spirit commented negatively on the Goliath Scorpions as lapdogs to
Clan Wolf. Newly elected saKhan Nelson Elam sought Keller out for a Trial of
Greivance over this, pointing out that such co-operation between Clans was
something the Blood Spirits had once espoused.

Boasting of his victory over Elam in the subsequent unaugmented trial between
the two saKhan's entourages - referred to in Ebon Keshik records as a drunken
brawl - Keller repeated the comment to Karianna Schmitt who was inspired to
contact Khan Ariel Suvorov and propose co-operation between their Clans. While
far from appointing an ilChi to the Goliath Scorpions she agreed to work with
them in developing a new OmniMech named for the Stone Lion of Tokasha as if
approved the 'Mech would be constructed on that world although based on the
Blood Kite.


Capabilities:
Both clans have been forced to rely on simple and inexpensive designs in the
past so they little difficulty agreeing the basic structures. The Stone Lion
wraps the engine and modified frame from a Blood Kite in 13.5 tons of
ferro-fibrous armour, using the same formula developed in the 2840s for use on
the Mars Assault Vehicle.

The layout is based on that of the Blood Kite with space for three large weapon
bays, two in the chest and one in the right arm. The left arm is provided with
only limited space, typically used for secondary systems. The jumpjet system
was retained and the cockpit systems were expanded to include an ECM suite.

The primary configuration draws on the Blood Kite, albeit re-arranged for the
new chassis. The triad of large lasers, LRM and SRM launchers gives it
considerable impact at any range although careful heat management is vital.

In contrast to the primary configuration, the Stone Lion A is simple and
heat-efficient with three Gauss Rifles and three medium lasers. This model was
more popular with Goliath Scorpion testers than their Blood Spirit counterparts.

For fire support missions the Stone Lion configuration of choice is the B with
two ER PPCs alternating fire with seven LRM launchers. In close quarters, the
left arm can bring to bear a cluster of three small lasers for additional
firepower.

There are some Mechwarriors for whom there's no substitute for autocannon. The
Stone Lion C caters to this, with a pair of ultra autocannon in the chest and a
LB 10-X in the right arm. Each arm also mounts an extended range lasers. Like
the A configuration, this model handles heat well.

The final configuration so far uses three Large Pulse Lasers for long-range
engagements, bolstering these with nine Streak SRM launchers at close ranges.
As this potentially more than triples the firepower of the Configuration,
Mechwarriors aware of the configuration prefer not to approach a Stone Lion D
closer than 300m.

Galaxy Commander Brett Andrews is a man who felt denied a certain amount of greatness.  He is fanatically devoted to his Clan, and to his Clan's ways of thinking.    That Clan Steel Viper has been routinely defeated or under performed in the Inner Sphere has not been the fault of the Vipers way of thinking nor the clans methodology of warfare, but rather an ambiguous "Taint" that he accuses the entire inner Sphere of harboring, and sometimes spreading to other clans, most notably the Jade Falcons.

GC Andrews commanded scientists and technicians to create an omnimech in the same vein as the Battle Cobra and Crossbow, utilizing a standard engine and minimal advanced construction materials in order to enhance his clusters, and eventually his clans offensive might.  Scientists succeeded in turning in plans for the quicksilver proposal in record time.  what they did not mention was the use of the decommissioned and obsolete Wakazashi chassis and a modified engine as the core of this new mech.  the armor was reworked from the Wakazashi in order to enhance ease of mantaince that was needed to the frame.  though only 88% of the maximum possible coverage the available physical space makes mantaince much easier on technicians, and still matches the venerable Star Leagues Battlemaster, a mech that possesses a reputation for enhanced protection of it's operator and ruggedness.  in honor of the absolute control this mech is designed to have over the battlefield, Andrews named the mech Imperator.

the Imperator Prime is modeled after the Wakazashi, but utilizes two gauss rifles to put the mech in a Stand off Posture.  six tons of gauss ammunition profile excellent endurance particularly for a clan mech, and the jump jets provide enough maneuverability to keep the mech from being flanked when in a defensive posture.

mean for up close attacks, the imperator B utilizes 8 medium pulse lasers for accurate  direct attacks.  twin 88mm autcannons dominate the arms, providing additional firepower against both ground and air targets.

Alternate Configuration B is based upon the most common SLDF Assault mech in existance, and one that the Clans only took a few with them on the exodus.  that the Stalker was one the of the toughest mechs for the Clans to deal with, and one of the most common, spelled a certian amount of respect.  the Viper Scientists saw that focusing on the most high tech machines was perhaps a mistake on the part of the Great Father, when lower tech but more durable and effective machines would be better served.

Finally Alternate Configuration C  is a generalized Fire Support Design.  Ostensibly it is built to bring an Arrow IV Launcher onto the battlefield for precision targets.  the twin LB-2X Autocannons and deep ammunition bins permit the C to also function in a light anti aircraft role, while side mounted ERPPCs permit direct fire support/self defense against ground forces.  this combination of extended range weaponry creates an effective zone of control that could permit an entire trinary to operate with a certian amount of impunity.  if deployed a Star per Cluster in a manner similar to the Wolves own Naga, it could create a nightmare area control platform for the vipers.

Overview
To date, neither Clan Hell's Horses nor Clan Star Adder have made impressive showings in Project QUICKSILVER.  Although each Clan had one victory apiece, both felt that they deserved more; both felt that their strong Clans needed more.  But the Khans of those two Clans (Malavai Fletcher and Cassius N'Buta, respectively) were determined to change that.

With few options remaining as the OmniMech research, development, and optimization program drew to a close, the Khans decided to collaborate on what had been christened a "Zombie", although neither Clan primarily used such OmniMechs on a routine basis for their front-line forces.  However, Clan Star Adder did have a strong tradition of using such standard fusion engine powered BattleMechs in their second-line and garrison units . . . and both Clans realized that potential profits could be squeezed from smaller Clans who simply could not afford better technology in large numbers.

Naming the OmniMech proved to be the first challenge . . . Khan Fletcher insisted that in some way the name must refer to HER Clan.  Which ruffled the feathers (well, scales, to be honest) of Khan N'Buta in turn and threatened to end the joint project before it truly began.  But then a Goliath Scorpion abtakha in the Star Adder Khan's command unit put forward a suggestion:

Name the new design after an exceptional pre-spaceflight atmospheric fighter craft of Old Earth.  One known and respected for its sheer toughness, endurance, lethality, speed, and ability to destroy its opponents in amazing numbers.

He referred to the ancient F6F Hellcat of the long-forgotten United States Navy.

Both Khans were impressed by the suggestion (Khan Fletcher because the name included the word HELL, which met her requirements, and Khan N'Buta because not only was that WW2 fighter extraordinary, the Star League had named not just one, but TWO Aerospace Fighters after it). 

After viewing ancient records found in the Clan's central archives of footage of the original F6F Hellcat, Khan N'Buta agreed.

And with that hurdle passed, work on the design began.


Capabilities
The new Hellcat OmniMech would be based upon the SA-85O Light endo-steel chassis of the Marauder IIC that was produced by Clan Star Adder on Albion.  The design would incorporate the Forging MD4 ferro-fibrous armor plating (13.5 tons for 98.47% of maximum theoretical protective coverage) and the Consolidated 340 Fusion engine--both of which were also produced on Albion for the Marauder IIC.

This combination would allow the Hellcat to walk at speeds of 43.2 kilometers per hour and run at 64.8 kph . . . the same as the front-line Warhawk OmniMech (also 85-tons) produced by Clan Smoke Jaguar. 

Clan Hell's Horses would contribute the communications array (CH3V Series Integrated), the targeting and tracking array (Version Kappa-III TTS), and the double-strength heat sinks from their Thunder Stallion line located on Kirin.  Thirteen DHS would be integrated into the engine core, leaving the Hellcat with 30.0 tons of pod-space for weapons and equipment.

Both Khans were quite surprised when the scientists informed them of the available pod-space . . . just two and one-half tons less than the Warhawk moving at the same speed, possessing the same level of armor protection, and costing less than HALF the price in capital expenditures and resources!  Of course, the Hellcat did possess seven fewer DHS than the Warhawk, making heat judgment on the part of the Warrior assigned to this war-machine of vital importance.

But the Khans deemed this as acceptable and ordered immediate production of a dozen prototypes for testing on Niles, Sheridan, and Strana Mechty.  The design would be produced on both Kirin and Albion, with all components shipped as needed for assembly.

The Prime Configuraiton is a true zombie.  Armament consists of three Large Pulse Lasers (right arm, left arm, and center torso) supported by five Medium Pulse Lasers (right arm, left arm, right torso, left torso, and head).  Fifteen DHS allow the Hellcat Prime to generate just movement heat when using all three LPLs at range; in close, the Warrior can substitute five MPLs for two of the Large Pulse Lasers and maintain the same heat profile.  Although not recommended, the lack of explosive munitions means that if necessary, the Warrior may utilize an Alpha-strike with all eight lasers laying out a blistering array of accurate fire.  His OmniMech will probably shut-down seconds later, but he has that option.

Configuration A has an ecletic array of weapons:  a Gauss Rifle in the left arm with three tons of ammunition (24 shots), an ER PPC and an ER Large Laser in the right arm, and a head-mounted ER Medium Laser.  Seventeen DHS allow the Warrior to generate excess overheat only on a running Alpha Strike . . . and even then it is a minimal amount.

Configuration B has four jump jets for a 120-meter jump capability.  Long-range armament consists of an ER PPC in the right arm while a head-mounted ECM Suite provides additional defenses.  The ER PPC and the secondary weapons are tied into a three-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso for maximum accuracy.  EIGHT ER Medium Lasers make up the secondary battery, with two each in the left arm, left torso, center torso, and right torso.  Twenty-one DHS is sufficient to allow the Warrior to run and fire all eight ER Mediums and remain heat-neutral.  At ranges exceeding the reach of the ERML, the design is quite cool-running, while the close-quarters damage potential is exceptional.

The Hellcat C is armed with two ER Large Lasers (right arm and left arm) and two ER Medium Lasers (center torso), supported by an Active Probe in the head.  But the main close-quarters weapon is the massive LB-20X autocannon in the right torso fed by FIVE tons of ammunition stored in the left torso (25 bursts!!).  Fifteen DHS allow the Warrior to use one ER Large, both ER Mediums, and the LB-20X autocannon at shorter ranges, while remaining heat-neutral even on a run. 

Configuration D is a fire-support OmniMech that the Adders insisted upon.  Four LRM-15 launchers (each with Artemis IV and emplaced two each in the right arm and left arm) with eight tons of ammunition (64 total missile flights) are the main guns.  Two center torso mounted Medium Pulse Lasers are almost an afterthought.  Although just the base thirteen DHS were fitted, excess overheat is quite low, even on a running Alpha-strike.

Configuration E was demanded by the Horses.  Three ER PPCs (right arm, left arm, and center torso) form the main battery.  Twenty-three DHS allow for the constant use of all three guns generating excess overheat only on a run.  Two ER Medium Lasers were fitted to the right and left torso in a rear-firing position, providing for additional protection against lighter, faster opponents.

Finally, the Hellcat F is an exercise to see just how much potential damage the chassis can inflict.  Two ER Large Lasers in the left arm supported by an LB-5X autocannon in the right arm (with two tons of ammo for 40 bursts) are the long-range guns.  Medium-range, as well.  In close, however, these weapons are overshadowed by the FOURTEEN ER Small Lasers mounted in the right torso (four), center torso (two), head (one), and left torso (seven).  Fourteen DHS means that only movement heat is generated when using the ER Smalls in close . . . and at range the design simply cannot overheat.  To make matters worse for the opponents of the Hellcat F, EVERY gun on this OmniMech has been net-worked into a five-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso for maximum accuracy, regardless of range.  Lethal in close-quarters, the Adders expect the Hellcat F to serve admirably as heavy anti-Aerospace OmniMech configuration as well, in addition to being able to lay down direct supporting fire at long range with the twin ER Large Lasers.


Deployment
Khan Lincoln Osis of Clan Smoke Jaguar was NOT amused when the Hellcat was unveiled to the ilKhan on Strana Mechty.  Khans Fletcher and N'Buta had drawn upon the services of the Scorpion abtakha who originally suggested the name to prepare a short introductory film explaining the lineage and name of the design for the ilKhan, the Khans, and their senior officers.

Knowing his audience well, the Scorpion-turned-Adder included gun-camera footage and vintage World War II film of the original Hellcat in action, spliced together with clips of the SLDF Hellcat and Hellcat II ASF.  But what drove Khan Osis into a frenzy was the opening sequence where the former Scorpion showed Imperial Japanese fighters downing dozens of obsolte P-40 Warhawks and the voice-over that narrated the design and introduction of the Hellcat as a replacement for the aging and obsolete Warhawk.

Furious over the implications (and potential insults), Osis came close to challenging both Fletcher and N'Buta to a Trial of Grievance then-and-there, but his officers managed to restrain him before he could make that monumental error in judgment.

After a week spent in isolation to calm himself and collect his thoughts, Osis announced that the Smoke Jaguars would view the production of the Hellcat as an insult . . . and would Trial for the exclusive rights of any factory intended for its production in order to dismantle it on the spot.

To which ilKhan Kerensky answered . . . "Bargained well and done."
