Quicksilver Program #16: 90 ton Vampire OmniMech

With only four contests remaining we have made into the 90 ton range with two Clan OmniMechs already filling roles. The first is the Kingfisher introduced by the Ghost Bears in 2887. It is a fast Zombie with a 360 Standard Fusion Engine (4/6) and 24 tons of pod space available for weapons and equipment. The Clan 90 ton Werewolf will be the Black Mamba (formerly known as the Blood Asp) in canon. With its 360XL (4/6)   and 42 tons of pod space this Star Adder creation was so similar to one of my home cooked designs (the Black Mamba) the name change was relatively simple. The so what this trail will test is the new 90 ton Clan Vampire.

This will be the third and final Vampire or Assailant of the Quicksilver Program. Again these OmniMechs maximize pod space at the expense of all else concentrating on offensive firepower. As such nearly half of this machine’s mass or more should be reserved for pod space. This makes an Extra Light (XL) Fusion Engine a must on this design. Unfortunately with the assault weight movement minimum in effect and other faster designs already existing this machine will go 3/5. While integral jump jets could work to improve this assault class Omnis maneuverability there is no variation possible on engine size. Sorry gang.

Costs should be mid range (less than a Werewolf but more than a Zombie) and use of existing material (such as XL Engines from other designs) would still be a nice touch as the Clans always look to maximize resources. I love to hear about Clan components already in use, like the engines, which have been included in the design to lower costs and speed development. Please do not force equipment that does not exist like trying to retrofit an InnerSphere XL into a Clan XL. That does not save time or effort. What I am looking for ideally are Clan components already in production either from Mechs, Fighters, or Vehicles.

Remember it is all or nothing here. Kill or be killed so this machine should threaten almost any target with its available arsenal. Unlike the stigma attached to the Zombie I think the Vampire is preferred in Clan frontline service. Perhaps older trueborn warriors looking for a glorious end or those deadliest of killers looking for an edge would go for this design. It would be rare for these machines to see second line service but perhaps in certain circumstances I could see it. Almost every Clan could make a case for building this one so your options are wide opened. Burrock, Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar, and Wolf are out as they have filled up their production quota.

I would love the Diamond Sharks to win this contest as they are a Vampire type Clan without a Vampire type OmniMech currently in production. That would be ideal. My other choice would probably be Coyote looking to build on the success of their Savage Coyote. Hell’s Horses are also woefully under performing based on my assumptions on industrial strength but I am saving them for another design later. Thankfully I no longer have to worry about the Goliath Scorpions with the victory of the Stone Lion. Then there are the other ten Clans who have not topped out their manufacturing capacities. While you are picking a designing Clan keep in mind that another major point in the submission process, the name. The name of your entry is a big deal as more then one designer has found out. Accepted naming conventions for the Quicksilver Program include two major criteria from this point forward. Star League Standard English is a must at this point in Clan history for your presentation. They take great pride in their language and will not pollute it with contractions or foreign ‘Mech names. Also do not name your design after a Clan. I personally dislike the whole totem Mech idea and for the united Quicksilver Program such pomp pomps will be bounced by the ilKhan.

The winning entry will be featured in my FedCom Forever universe which is outlined in my Clarion Call fanfic. Technical Readout 3054: Quicksilver Program is really shaping up thanks to your participation. It will feature all the contest winners, some other notables, and tell us what the Clans of this alternate universe are up to. With every contest we get closer and closer to a finished product.

I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program as it makes things easier on me. I am looking forward to seeing what ideas are developed here and hopefully I can build on them in my fanfic. Any questions or more information can be obtained by simply contacting me at anytime. With a 270XL engine you can only bank 10 DHS . . . which means you are going to run out of crits LONG before you run out of tonnage.  I mean, just using an XL and standard IS/armor nets you the same 50.5 tons of payload as a Dire Wolf . . . without the 15 DHS (12 in the ENGINE) that machine has.  Remove seven crits for endo-steel and you've got 55.0 tons of pod-space . . . and forty crit locations (MAX) to put all of that (and the DHS you need).

That's it.  I'm done.

My entry will disprove this in a moment. However what you end up with is a Mech that reminds one of the Dire Wolf (terribly undersinked) and just about every Jihad-era WoBbie design (too many are way undersinked as well).

so here is my entry and be warned all but one of the configs are way undersinked. These rides are all about heat discipline. I also realized I could have skipped on the ferro-fibrous, but I would have lost 2.5 tons of pod space at the gain of 7 crits. I even went with max armor to help lower the weight. Again, these are awesome configs IMO, but it does require heat management on behalf of the Mech's pilot.

Overview:
Master Scientist Jason (Rynchowski) was assigned the task of developing a new
assault class OmniMech by Scientist-General Charlotte (von Braun) back in 
November of 3049, just after the launch of Operation Revival. While Clan Snow
Raven was noted for its acumen in naval and, to a lesser extent, aerospace
warfare, it still maintained a skilled ground based touman. However, the
Revival trials saw the Clan left our of the invasion, thought they were to
provide naval and logistical support to a number of the invading clans. Jason
was given a ree reign to complete this project as well as a long lead time for
the initial prototype and field testing.

When looking to what weight class he would use for the design, he decided on
making it a 90-ton machine is what is in the median area between the 80-ton
minimum and 100-ton maximum. NoiwJason prided himself on his history, both his
own and his Clan's, He could trace his familial line all the back to the Clan's
original saKhan Joyce Merrell and that is where he chose to go to find
inspiration for his Clan's new OmniMech. It would find it's roots in the first
Mech that Clan Snow Raven would produce, the Pulverizer. Brought into
production following the completion of Operation Klondike it was originally
built with Star League era endo-steel and with a much larger engine. Master
Scientist decided to modernize the chassis and give it a smalllerand less
powerful 270XL powerplant. The slower ground speed would be mitigated with the
application of three fixed jump jets. With the modernization of the chassis
came a new visage with a more avian aesthetic including an area surrounding the
jump jets that looked alot like a set of wings fanning out a cross the back of
the Thunderbird.

With battleroms and other reports filtering back to the Homeworlds from the
battlefields of the Inner Sphere, including the defeat at Wolcott dealt to the
Smmoke Jaguars, Master Scientis Jason and his team decided to free up
additional mass for weapons allocation through the  application of
ferro-fibrous armor. This left the development team with forty-seven tons of
availabble pod space for the Thunderbird, which proved to be sufficient enough
to their needs, once the initial loadouts were developed.


Configurations:
The first configuration, the Prime, featured a punishing array of weapons
centered around a pair of ER PPCs and a Gauss Rifle. Additional fire support
comes from a pair of Artemis IV-equipped fifteen-tube LRM lanchers. The Gauss
rifle draws its ammunition from a three-ton pod mounted on the arme with the
rifle, while the missile lanchers each have a two-ton supply of missiles. The
only othere weapon is an ER medium laser mounted in the head alongside the
cockpit. A total of six additional heat sinks help to deter the massive heat
buildup potential of the weapons.

Alternate configuration A features two Class 10 autocannons, one each Ultra and
LB-X, paired with an ER PPC. Each of the autocannon draw from a three-ton
ammunition bay. A trio of ER medium lasers provide additonal short-range fire
support. Again, six additional heat sinks are carried to help mitgate the heat
burden of the energy weapons.

Alternate Configuration B is another long-range brawler feature enrgy-based
weapons in the main battery. A pair each of ER large lasers and large pulse
lasers are carried in the arms, while a pair of medium pulsers are split
between the side torsos. Additional long-range firepower is provided by a pair
of twenty-tube LRM launchers mounted in the torso with four tons of ammunition
to share between them. A smmall pulse laser is the final weapon mounted on the
B. Eight additonal heat sinks help fight a losing against heat buildup,
especially if a pilot was foolish enough to alpha strike this machine.

Alternate configuration C is a variation of the A configuration that replaces
the Class 10 autocannons with Class 20 autocannons, again featuring one each of
the ULtra and the LB-X. Two ER large lasers replace the ER PPCs and are mounted
in the side torsos, Each of the autocannons are fed by a four-ton ammunition
locker. A head mounted small pulse laser is mounted by the cockpit. Four
additional heat sinks are carried to help with the heat burden.

Alternate configuration D is another energy-based variant featuring a quartet
of large pulse lasers and a ER large laser. These are backed up by a pair of
Artemis IV-equipped ten-tube LRM launchers. Ten additional heat sinks go along
way towards eliminating the heat generated by the five lasers carried in this
configuration.

Alternate configuration E is another heavy hitter featuring a pair of Gauss
rifles, each a with three-ton pod of ammunition. These two large weapons are
backed up by a quartet of medium pulse lasers and a trio of ER medium lasers
spread acros the side torsos and head. Six additional heat sinks help get rid
of nearly all of the heat generated by the weapons of this configuration.

The final configuration, the X, came about from the review of the battleroms
from the Battle of Tukayyid and the sheer amount of artillery fire that the
ComGuards fropped on all of the Clan forces. This configuration feature an
Arrow IV artillery missile system with four tons of ammunition. This is meant
to give the Clan Warriors with a response to the artillery forces of the Inner
Sphere. A pair of Class 5 LB-X autocannons are mounted to counter aerospace
forces, as well as ground based. Four tons of ammunition feed the two guns,
typically cluster rounds to handle the aerospace threat. Additonally, two ER l
arge lasers are mounted to keep any enemies from the Mech and its pilot.
An ECM suite is mounted to jam incoming miissile and enemy targeting systems.

I see where Master Arminas is coming from here. A 360XL makes it harder to reach the 50% pod-space bracket for a vampire but it's not impossible. And the Kingfisher makes excellent use of a 360 SFE so limiting this to 270 only seems a bit restrictive.

(With that said, 4/6 wouldn't be my style for this bracket, but I believe it'd be viable)

Overview:
Clan Nova Cat developed the Hellstorm from their well known Supernova assault
Mech, replacing the engine with a 270XL engine from their new Shadow Cat.
Ferrofibrous armour was considered but in the end, the need for space led to a
decision in favour of simply reinforcing the existing Omega Heavy Stellarguard.

The Nova Cats were still considering how to fit the Hellstorm into their
construction programme - the Barcella Alpha complex or an upgrade of the former
LexaTech factory on Irece being the primary contenders - when Clan Cobra
launched a lightning Trial of Possession and won the design. Khan Din Steiner
thence declared that the Hellstorm would be built at Brim Ironworks, which
already constructed the Supernova.

Tense bargaining between the Nova Cats followed with the Cloud Cobra Khan
finally having to make concessions to Sevren Leroux in order to purchase the
necessary reactors from the Nova Cats. Some rumours claim that Leroux was
playing the long game, deliberately leaking information to the Cloud Cobras so
that they'd win a design slightly beyond their ability to manufacture. As a
result, Clan Nova Cat merchant factors are assured of purchasing the Hellstorm
at cost from their 'new rivals' while still raking in the profits by selling
them the engines.


Capabilities:
With a little over half its weight allocated to pod-space, the Hellstorm edges
into the Vampire category. The fixed jumpjets assure mobility and protection,
though below the theoretical maximum for the frame is still excellent, with
15.5 tons spread across the structure.

The Prime configuration starts out from the Supernova's armament but strips a
large laser from each arm, using the tonnage to add four medium lasers for
close quarters fire. To further bolster this, six SRM racks in the chest are
fed by two tons of ammunition.

The Hellstorm A copies from the classic SLDF assault 'Mech, the Stalker. Moving
the SRMs out to the arms and the medium lasers, the Cloud Cobras who added this
configuration feel that it creates a 'citadel' in the chest that won't be
affected by ammunition explosions due to the Clan CASE.

In an endeavour to show what their new prize could do, the Cloud Cobras
outfitted the Hellstorm B to copy the Kingfisher Prime. sufficient tonnage and
space remained when the Kingfisher's armament was loaded that the right arm
pulse laser was moved over to the left arm and the technicans fitted an
supplementary Gauss Rifle.

Retained from the Nova Cats trials but redesignated as the C-configuration, the
final loadout opts for simplicity: each arm mounts a Gauss Rifle and each side
torso carries a PPC.

I am sorry to hear your done Master Arminas. The guidelines are pretty tough here but I thought folks would step to the plate and scream out "beat the Dire Wolf!" It does get tough here but this is not impossible. However I know there will be other objections. There are three more OmniMech contests to come and I hope to see you back.

Movement of 4/6/0, 13 DHS in the engine core, endo-steel IS, 14.0 tons of ferro-fibrous armor (for 96.05% of maximum) . . . and it still has 45.0 tons remaining for pod-space.

Two tons less than Abele's design (47.0 tons) and one ton less than yours (46.0 tons), while having more DHS banked in the engine AND moving faster (4/6/0 vs. 3/5/3).  I even have a jumping configuration that moves 4/6/4 with 37.0 tons remaining.  If you include the 13 DHS, that gives me 48.0 tons of weapons and equipment vs. 53.0 tons (Abele) or 52.0 tons (you) [I was nice and included your jump jet tonnage].

Making a 4/6/x 90-tonner with 50% of it's tonnage for pod-space (or other equipment) isn't that difficult.

You could always try and violate the design criteria if you feel that strongly about you being in the right MA but in this case you would have to do three things. 1 - explain in fluff how your design is different from the Black Mamba (Blood Asp). 2 - reasons why you are not going with the 3/5 in fluff (which I got here) 3 - Beat your competitors here

Perhaps you could try to reclassify the contest? Perhaps you think the Werewolf role has not been sufficiently filled by the Mamba and it should actually be the Vampire.  Just riffing here.

Overview

Fresh from the success of the last Quicksilver round a small cabal of Goliath Scorpion Warriors from Gamma Galaxy had gathered together and imbued Necrosia together before plunging into a review of the Battlemech designs archived in the Temple of the Nine Muses.   Five warriors started the journey and only four survived to come up with what they all believed was an ideal Star League Battlemech to inspire a new design.

The Emperor Battlemech, the first one to combine a full range of advanced technology and the first assault class mech capable of jumping.

Quickly assigning their personal Sages and Tinkers to the problem of adjusting the ancient chassis into an Omni mech design, the four Warriors lead by Star Captain Abagail Dinour began to plot how to acquire the designs and production rights to the Light Force 270 XL (used in the Incubus.   Thankfully Star Colonel Arnold Dinour of the 4th Scorpion Cuirassiers (Tau Galaxy) was more than willing to help a fellow member of the Dinour Bloodname out, for future considerations of course.

The 4th Cuirassiers's quickly launched a Trial of Possession for the Light Force 270 XL Engine that completely surprised the Hell Horses at Toshka Mechworks Alpha who had left a young Ristar, Star Captain Thomas, in charge of defending the facility while the senior staff were trialing against the Falcons for Vandals produced at the Toshka Aeroworks.   Having bid poorly Star Captain Thomas meet his end the claws of a Scorpion Elemental in the ensuing Trial.

With components quickly coming together the intrepid cabal of Warriors lead by Star Captain Abagail Dinour pressured their personal Sages and Tinkers to hurry up and finish converting Emperor's Titan Chassis to an omni capable design.      After consuming extremely large quantities of opiates, narcotics, uppers, downers, and several large dollops of LSD Scientist Donald (Krieger) managed to solve the herculean engineering task in one stressful night.

What emerged from this chemically enhanced quest was a Vampire Omni Mech with 47 tons of pod space, capable of jumping 90 meters and running speeds of fifty four kilometers an hour.   Clad in fourteen and half tons of ferro-fibrous armor the Tyrant carries as much armor as is physically possible. 

Paired big guns be it Gauss, LBX, or LPLs a common feature across the design variants along with deep ammo bins.   Star Captain Abagail Dinour prefers the Gamma variant, hammering foes with highly accurate gauss rifle shots and letting the Streak SRM6's tear apart foes who get close.

While I've got a different approach to this mechanically, I just don't have enough creative writing juices left for a second option. It would have been based on the Highlander, though. I'll post the shell design on Saturday once this contest is over

Overview:
To compete in the 90-ton category Merchant Factor Angus Labov went back to Clan
Diamond Shark's most iconic product in the assault-class. Over 1,500 Highlander
IIC assault 'Mechs had been been produced as upgraded SLDF chassis or as new
construction, with hundreds still in service.

In addition to returning production to the original factory on Arcadia, the
Diamond Sharks are also planning to steal a page from Inner Sphere strategists
and construct 'conversion kits' that can be shipped to every Clan to convert
existing Highlanders into the Clansman.


Capabilities:
Although Clan Nova Cats' new RFUM reactor was considered, ultimately the
Diamond Sharks made a deal with Clan Hells Horses - also currently not heavily
committed to production for Quicksilver to use their proven Light Force reactor
- as used on the Incubus light 'Mech.

The original Highlander was very well armoured, designers pared its protection
back on the recommendation of Khan Ian Hawker, to maximise the tonnage
available for armament. The result was fifty full tons of pod-space was opened
up. This does have a negative effect sometimes with Mechwarriors assuming the
Clansman is as durable as its forebear. This simply isn't the case and in
particular, the legs may buckle if over-strained in a 'Highlander burial'
attack.

The Clansman Prime draws heavily from the original Highlander with a Gauss
Rifle and LRM racks for long range, alternating with SRMs and Medium Lasers for
close range combat. However, the Clansman significantly upgrades the missiles
in both cases, firing up to fifty LRMs or sixteen Streak SRMs.

The most common alternate configuration fits a Gauss Rifle in each arm and
pairs them with ER PPCs for a formidable long range barrage. The only
supporting weapon fitted is a Streak SRM rack in the chest.

The Clansman B is configured for mixed circumstances - the LRMs provide
excellent long range bombardment capability but the active probe and ability to
pivot the pair of autocannon in all directions make it surprisingly effective
in close quarters such as mountains and urban terrain.
