Quicksilver Program #17: 95 ton Zombie OmniMech

Back we go to a Zombie design for the Clan 95 ton weight class. So what do the Clans have at their disposal in the 3052? Well the Werewolf role is covered by the Executioner (Gladiator) which was introduced in 3001 by Clan Ghost Bear. This Assault OmniMech powered by a 380XL Engine and integral jump jets (4/6/4) is very quick for its size especially when you add a MASC ( 8 ). With only 13.5 tons of ferro fibrous (259 factor) the armor is a tad bit on the light side – in fact designers could have done a ton and a half more for new max protection. There is also only 26.5 tons (less than 28 percent) reserved for pod space.

Just entering mass production in 3052 is the Turkina which of course was introduced by Clan Jade Falcon. This 95 ton Vampire is equipped with a 285XL Engine and integral jump jets (3/5/3). So while it is mobile this OmniMech is much slower than the Executioner. With 18 tons of standard armor this war machine sports a 288 factor along with 42 tons of pod space for weapons and equipment. So it can take damage as well as dish it out. This leaves us with a need for a 95 ton Clan Zombie that goes at least 3/5 and sports full armor protection. Both 18 tons of standard armor and 15 tons of ferro fibrous will give you a 288 armor factor without leaving plating on the floor. (max factor being 293 technically)

Again I like to hear about Clan components already in use, like the engines, which have been included in the design to lower costs and speed development. Also remember that Zombies are looked down on by some Clanners. Many refuse to use them or at best will place them in second line service often placing these relics into reserve rather than use them. However these cheap, endurance based designs can be easily manufactured by poorer Clans. This could be the last best shot for a Clan frontline Quad as there is a model already in production that could help here.

There are really only two Clans left I want to focus on who are now really under represented by Quicksilver. Producing only one OmniMech a piece both Coyote (Savage Coyote) and Hell’s Horses (Crazy Horse) are performing below expectations. They should win at least 1 of the remaining 3 contests each as a bare minimum. However it is not impossible for other Clans to pick up the slack. Remember only Burrock, Jade Falcon, Smoke Jaguar, and Wolf are at max output. That leaves eleven other possibilities and I have updated the table below so that it is current.

While you are picking a designing Clan keep in mind that another major point in the submission process, the name. The name of your entry is a big deal as more then one designer has found out. Accepted naming conventions for the Quicksilver Program include two major criteria from this point forward. Star League Standard English is a must at this point in Clan history for your presentation. They take great pride in their language and will not pollute it with contractions or foreign ‘Mech names. Also do not name your design after a Clan. I personally dislike the whole totem Mech idea and for the united Quicksilver Program such pomp pomps will be bounced by the ilKhan.

The winning entry will be featured in my FedCom Forever universe which is outlined in my Clarion Call fanfic. Technical Readout 3054: Quicksilver Program is really shaping up thanks to your participation. It will feature all the contest winners, some other notables, and tell us what the Clans of this alternate universe are up to. With every contest we get closer and closer to a finished product.

I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program as it makes things easier on me. Overview:
Originally begun as two separate projects, it was discovered, through contact
with the merchants of both Clan Blood Spirit and Steel Viper, that the two clans
were working on similar projects. Each project was based on the Royal version
of the Crockett and both had been upsized in weight, with the Spirit design
being the heavier at 95 tons while the Viper came in 90 tons. The Spirit design
was also further ahead indevelopment with two working prototypes to the Viper's
none. After the discovery was made the two clans quickly decided to combine
their efforts into a single project.

Intially called Project Steel Spirit, all development was moved to York due to the
insular nature of the planet and heightened security. Salvaged from Puma tanks
and isorla from the Inner Sphere, the Vipers brought the needed powerplants for
the further production of prototypes of the 'Steel Spirit'. Further development
proceeded at a high pace as communications and targting systems were inte-
grated int combined chassis. Within weeks of the Viper scientist arriving on York
four more prototypes were being put their paces on the York proving grounds.

As the submission deadline for IlKhan Kerensky's Quicksilver initiative reached
it's final months, the leadership of Clans Blood Spirit and Steel Viper came
together to finalize their joint submission for the IlKhan's approval. All of
the groundwork had been finished weeks ago by the development team headed by
the Steel Viper's Senior Scientist Pavel and the Spirits' Chief Scientist Inara.

The team decided to use a modified version of the Star League-era Royal
Crockett's chassis mated to a powerplant orginally used by the Puma. The
chassis use the modernized Clantech version of endo-steel and is reinforced to
take on the additional tens tons of mass for the new Omnimech. To allow the
maximum amount of large weapons to be carried on the new chassis, it was
decided that standard would be used as ferro-fibrous armor used up too much of
the structural space. Eighteen tons of Compund 12A1 stnadard armor is spread
over the enitre chassis giving the new design the near maximum protection allowable.

From the beginning of the design process, the team anticipated that there would
a significant amount of heat build up on all of the possible configuration, so
they chose to mount a total of fifteen double heat sinks on the bases chassis.
As the weapons allocation part of the program came to fruition, this proved to
have been the prudent course of action. As a final addition, an ER small laser
was fixed mounted in the head just below the cockpit.

Khans Zalman and Schmitt both agreed that the basis for the weapons loadouts
would be based on the old adage of "Go big or go home" and demanded that all of
the loadouts use the most destructive weapons available and mount them in
pairs, at the very least. Scientist Pavel and Inara did not disappoint, as you
will see.

Once, the configurations were completed, it came down to the two Khans to
decide a name for the new designs. Upon seeing what their scientists had
wrought, the two Khans agreed that this new Omnimech would be forever as the
Armageddon. Should the design prove to be chosen by the IlKhan, it has been
decided that the Blood Spirits will produce the design as all of the pre-production and
protoype fabrication been done on York. It also has been decided that the Steel
Vipers will receive a trinary's worth of the design before any othe Clan does.


Configurations:
Following the directive given by their respective Khans, Pavel and Inara went
all out to accede to meet this demand. As befits it's name the Armageddon Prime
is two main weapons, the Gauss rifle and the ER PPC, mounted in pairs. The
Gauss rifles have six tons of ammunition to share between them. They are
mounted in the arms of the Armageddon. A pair of ER small lasers are mounted in
the rear arcs to discourage attacks by battle armor and cowardly infantry
forces. An addional heat sink is mounted to help deal with heat issues
generated by the particle projection cannons.

The Alpha configuration features a pair of Class 20 LB-X autocannons as the
main battery. Each of these cannons is fed by a four-ton ammunition bin with a
variety of solid and cluster rounds. Seocndary firepower is provided by an ER
large laser and a brace of medium pulse lasers. For additional defense agains
more conventional attacks, a pair of small pulse lasers are mounted in the rear
arcs. Two additional heat sinks help with any heat issues.

The Beta configuration is similar to the Alpha, but replace the LB-X autocannons
with quick-firing Ultra versions. The ammunition is lighter at three tons per
gun. This done for two reasons, to instill ammo discipline in the pilot and to
make room for the large pilse laser that replaces the ER laser. The twin medium
pulse lasers used by the Alpha, but now share space in the arms with the
autocannons. Four ER small lasers aare mounted in the side torsos with two
mounted to the rear arc. The Beta also retains the two additonal heat sinks
that the Alpha mounted.

The Gamma configuration is the missile support version of the Armageddon and
features a quartet of Artemis IV-equipped twenty-tube LRM launchers. Atotal of
twelve tons of ammunition feed the launchers giving this version plenty of
battlefield utility before resupply is necessary. An ER large laser and a pair
of rear mounted medium pulse lasers provide the secondary fire support for the
Gamma.

The final two configurationsare the two versions that feature jump capability
with the additon of three jump jets spread across all three torso locations.
The Delta's main weaponry features a oair each of the ER PPC and large pulse
mounted in the arms along with an ER medium laser. Atotal of ten additional
heat sinks are mounted to help with the tremendous heat generated by the
main battery. Given the omnimech's infrastucture, it was impossilbe to mount
additinal heat sinks with the twons of pod space remaining, so the design team
added a Streak twin-tube SRM launcher, instead of more lasers, to the rear
center torso along with a ton of ammunition. This is an unusual apllication,
but the designers did not wish to add any more burden to the already over-
worked heat sinks.

The final configuration, the Echo, diverges from the directive of the two Khans
by not having heavy hitter weapons. It is based on the weapons loadout of the
Blood Kite ineder development by the Blood Spirits. While nearly identical to the
to the Blood Kite, the third ER laser has been replaced by an ER medium and the
three SRM-4s have been replaced by two Streak launchers. The three LRM-15
launchers are carried over unchanged, as well as the twenty-one heat sinks.

A little history here - back in the 90s I was in a mechwarrior campaign where a pack of mercenaries with grudges battled the Clans in the 3050s. My character piloted a custom Banshee using scavenged clantech to turn it into a deadly duellist he called the Damocles. This isn't his story... (for one thing, I doubt the Clans would approve of a hatchet) but I remain fond of the Banshee and looking at the engine sources for this category... well. I knew where I was going to get a start on my entrant.

Overview:
When the Khans of Clan Hells Horses passed the specifications for a 95-ton
OmniMech using a standard fusion engine to their scientific teams, they left
them with a problem. Chassis of that tonnage were few and far between, with
neither the Gladiator nor the Turkina easily available as a basis since the
Horses weren't on especially good terms with either of the manufacturing Clans.

However, evaluation indicated that there was nothing especially advanced about
the chassis of either design so instead the Hells Horses looked to the past and
found a chassis that already met the basic requirements of weight and engine:
the much maligned BNC-3E Banshee.

Research indicated hundreds of Banshees had survived the Fall of the Star
League and even the Pentagon Civil War - often simply because they'd been
passed over by Mechwarriors prefering more heavily armed machines. Almost every
Clan would have examples in their Brian Caches.


Capabilities:
While the internal chassis and engine remain true to the original Banshee, the
Death Star sports improved armour and electronics taken from the Industriplex
Alpha's remaining Corvus battlemech production line. Armour coverage is no
better than that of the original design but it was felt some improvement had to
be made to weapon payload and the 2.5 tons saved by this measure brought this
up to an adequate 19 tons.

Another ton was found by cutting back the fixed coolant systems to those
contained in the engine - although these have been upgraded to Clan Double
Heatsinks. The designers, in building up the armour, chose to model the 'Mech on
the original Banshee, giving it the skull-like visage that would eventually be
imitated on the Atlas.

Acceptably agile and armoured to survive a modern battlefield - no one has ever
complained the Banshee wasn't tough - the Death Star' configurations are
primarily built around energy weapons to maximise endurance.

In the primary configuration, the Death Star sports advanced electronics of
every kind. Six additional heatsinks are fitted to help handle the heat
generated by the armament: eight extended range medium lasers. Among the most
respected Clan weapons this yields respectable close and medium range
firepower, especially when tied into the targeting computer. Each arm sports a
small laser for flexibility.

The Death Star A mounts a medium laser in each arm and a PPC in the chest,
balanced by an autocannon with two tons of ammunition. Cool-running and
covering all range bands this is the most flexible configuration but by lacking
focus it sometimes famils to make a strong impression.

Modelled on the SLDF's Thug, the Death Star B mounts a pair of PPCs and a pair
of six-shot SRM launchers but it reverses the arrangement, placing the missiles
in the arms and the PPCs in the chest. This can overheat easily as using the
PPCs alone strains the coolant system.

The Death Star C mounts jump-jets and a simple but effective armament of 2
large and 4 small lasers in the chest. Both arms are left unarmed. This leaves
the configuration effectively unarmed when transporting Elementals and some
analysts suggest this may indicate the Hells Horses are leaning towards the
spheroid tactic of using the 'Mech's fists to punch opponents - a dubious
practise under zellbrigen.
