Today we start designing the final of the Clans' three OmniMech variants for the 20 ton chassis. From canon we have the Fire Moth (aka Dasher) which is the very definition of a Speedster or what I’m alternately referring to as a Werewolf. Our first design contest produced the Nightcrawler (by Master Arminas) via Clan Burrock which will serve as the Clans 20 ton Zombie OmniMech. So what we need to complete this weight range is what I was originally calling an Assailant. I’m still alternately fooling around with the monster theme as you can see so I’m now calling these Vampires because they draw off armor and speed to maximize their offensive firepower.

As such nearly half of this machine’s mass or more should be reserved for pod space so Extra Light engines are a must. Since this is still a light machine however and speed is always key the 6/9 movement minimum is still in affect. Costs should be mid range (less than a Speedster but more than a Zombie) and use of existing material (such as XL Engines from other designs) would still be a nice touch as the Clans always look to maximize resources. Remember its all or nothing here. Kill or be killed so even something this light should threaten almost any target with its potential firepower.

Unlike the stigma attached to the Zombie I think the Vampire is preferred in Clan frontline service even if this one is only 20 tons. Perhaps older trueborn warriors looking for a glorious end or those deadliest of killers looking for an edge would go for this design. It would be rare for these machines to see second line service but perhaps in certain circumstances I could see it. Almost every Clan could make a case for building this one so your options are wide opened. Again tell me which Clan built and why? It doesn’t hurt to mention other Clans helping or challenging for possession of this machine either. Here is a list of which Clans prefer what equipment in 3052.

Still hoping to do a Technical Readout 3059 for this setting and when I do the winners shall appear in this fanbook. This work would not only follow the progression of Clan equipment in this alternate setting but the InnerSphere’s as well. I’m really looking forward to the day when this piece is complete.

I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program like Heavy Metal Pro cause it makes things easier on me. Here is my submission.   Another omnimech designed in cooperation with a few clans and guided by the Merchant Warriors of Clan Dimond Shark. 

By reviewing the requirements of the Quicksilver Program and seeing future profit.  The Merchant Warriors of Clan Dimond Shark decided to Trial or negotiate with some home clans on designing the next generation omni mech.  The design schematic will be shared with participating clans and if the Mech is chosen then they can trial for the right to be the manufacturers of the omnimech.

They based the Cobra Dog on the Firemoth.  The internal structure uses standard instead of endosteel to cut down on the cost and downgraded the engine from a 200XL to a 120XL.  This help minimize development costs and the Clan's that are agreed to develop it was the Cloud Cobra's, Blood Spirit's and of course the Dimond Shark.  Clan Ice Hellion was approached but they deemed the omnimech too slow for their possible use.

The Cobra Dog is designed as the lightest mech that can possibly served in a front line Clan unit.  From a glance the mech looks like the Fire Moth but the difference is the arms are configured differently.  The development team expect to submit two prototypes of each model.  One for the Quick Silver Program and the other for the evaluation of the respective Clans.  The Dimond Sharks are of course hoping for a possible win with this model.  The overall theme with this omnimech is to minimize ammo usage and increase its survival against its innersphere opponents.  The design gives about 8 tons of pod space to work with.

The base design is armed with a ER PPC and is paired with a targeting computer for long range sniper duty.

Type A is designed for indirect fire support with 3 LRM 5 packs and direct long range fire support with its single large laser.

Type B adds Jump Jets for a distance of up to 180 meters.  This model packs a pair of ER Medium lasers as its primary weapon and a flamer on each arm for anti infantry work.  The additional  use of this mech is to use TAG to spot for Arrow IV artillery and use its ECM to counter any targeting gear or any electronics like the beagle active probe that is being fielded by inner sphere forces.  This mech is ideally used in wooded areas or urban areas.

Type C continues the mobility theme of the Type B and removes the Flamer, TAG and ECM for a targeting computer.  The ER Lasers are replaced with a pair of Medium Pulse lasers. This configuration is designed as a long range raider since all of its weapons are energy based and has no ammo dependency.  Also gives it a higher chance to take down its opponents with combination of the pulse lasers and targeting computer.

BLOODWING

Overview
Intrigued by the ilKhan and his Project Quicksilver, Khan Lynn McKenna of Clan Snow Raven decided to submit a prototype of her own.  Drawing upon the venerable Fire Moth, she directed Raven Scientists to redesign that commonly deployed OmniMech with a smaller, lighter engine and without the MASC systems.  Although at least one Scientist asked whether they should consider improving the armor as a priority, Khan McKenna only authorized a slight increase of just one-half ton, demanding the largest possible war-load on an OmniMech masing just 20-tons.

Designated as Test Vehicle Bloodwing, the first example was handed over to the ilKhan in late 3052 for field testing.

Capabilities
Although many questioned their Khan's sanity (the Scientists doing so asking those questions VERY quietly), the Clan's finest minds sat down and outlined a 'Mech that might indeed meet the Khan's specifications.  Since speed is life for a 20-ton design, the Scientists decided that a walking speed of 75.6 kilometers per hour was the absolute minimum.  A 140-rate Extra-Light Fusion engine was fitted to comply with that decision.

With two and one-half tons of Ferro-Fibrous armor plating (half a ton more than the Fire Moth and providing almost 70% of the maximum possible protection on a 20-ton frame) and Endo-Steel II internal structure, the final computer design showed a capacity for 9.0 tons of pod-mounted weapons and equipment . . . just half-a-ton less than the 45-ton Ice Ferret!

Khan McKenna was impressed and she ordered two prototypes to be constructed immediately and shipped to the ilKhan for acceptance trials . . . although it is noteworthy that she did NOT instruct her own engineers to begin production for Clan Snow Raven.  This has led some to wonder whether or not the entire Bloodwing Project is some attempt by Khan McKenna to troll the other Clans by presenting them with a weakly protected (but heavily armed) chassis that existing Clan Snow Raven OmniMechs can easily defeat in future trials.

Configurations
The Prime features a blistering array of energy weapons:  a Large Pulse Laser in the right arm is the main gun; hellaciously accurate and possessing excellent range, it is a solid weapon.  But in close, the design can also bring SIX ER Small Lasers to bear (mounted two each in the left arm, right torso, and left torso).  The design carries just the base ten Double Strength Heat Sinks, resulting in marginal overheat production on a running Alpha Strike.  Khan McKenna approved the design, however, citing that any Clan Warrior worth her OmniMech should be to deal with the excess overheat production.

A sub-variant replaces the Large Pulse Laser with an ER PPC; although this version generates even greater levels of heat, the added range and damage of the ER PPC is considered worth the cost and the loss in accuracy.

Configuration A is outfitted with two ER Large Lasers (right arm and left arm) with an eleventh DHS filling out the pod-space.  Designed as a long-range sniper, this variant is well-able to pick targets to death at range, although it too suffers from the generation of excess overheat.

An in-fighter supreme, Configuration B is armed with five ER Medium Lasers (right arm, right torso, center torso, left torso, and left arm) tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer (right torso).  Thirteen DHS are mounted, allowing for overheat generation only on a running Alpha Strike.  Even clan Heavy- and Assault-weight war-machines have to be careful of the Bloodwing A because if it can get in their rear it is quite possible to lose a Trial due to the blistering discharge of the quintuple laser array.

Configuration C is very cool running, although it does suffer from limited onboard ordnance.  The main weapon is an LRM-20 with Artemis IV (right arm) fed by a two-ton magazine in the right torso (twelve missile salvoes).  The only secondary weapon is an ER Medium Laser in the left arm.

Configuration D is a short-range missile boat.  Two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm) are the long-range weapons, backed up by three Streak SRM-4 launchers (right torso, center torso, and left torso) fed by a single ton of ammunition in the right torso (25 missile salvoes).

Configuration E has seven jump jets fitted for a maximum jumping distance of 210 meters.  Long-range armament consists of an LRM-10 (right arm) fed by a ton of ammunition in the right arm (twelve missile salvoes).  Two ER Medium Lasers (left arm and right torso) provide back-up weapons (and indeed, the majority of the damage potential).  It has been suggested that this configuration be paired with OmniMechs featuring a NARC missile beacon launcher to enhance the dozen missile salvoes available.

Then there is Configuration F.  This version carries an Active Probe (right torso), an ECM Suite (left torso), a TAG (left arm), an Anti-Missile System (left torso) with a ton of ammunition stored in the left torso (24 bursts), a Flamer (right arm), two Machine Guns (left arm) fed by a half-ton of ammunition (left arm), and two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and center torso).  A Targeting Computer (left torso) provides additional accuracy.  Although capable of serving as a scout or recon element, the Bloodwing F was designed to serve as an infantry hunter for urban combat operations.

Finally, Configuration G carries an LB-2X autocannon in the right arm with a ton of ammunition (also in the right, for 45 bursts of cluster!), support by a triple ER Medium Laser mount in the left arm.  Neither arm carries lower-arm or hand actuators, allowing the OmniMech to fire both ahead and behind at available targets.  While the damage from the LB-2X is minor, it is an effective anti-fighter weapon and possesses a superb range, as well as providing for the possible of securing critical hits against even heavily armored OmniMechs at ranges often exceeding those of their own weapons.  It is cool running as well and with the triple mount of ER Medium Lasers able to defend itself in close.

Deployment
Awaiting the Trial results of Project Quicksilver.  Only two prototypes are currently available for testing and combat simulations.

Overview:
When the ilKhan put out a call for new OmniMechs, the Smoke Jaguars were
already working on Lincoln chassis, intended to be a relatively slow frame for
garrison work capable of sprinting at just over 100 kph with use of MASC. The
design was quickly re-worked to meet the minimal standards for the new contest.


Capabilities:
The Dust Liger must triumph swiftly or die: with only light armour it can't
survive an extended fight. In order to optimise for carrying Elementals, almost
all the chassis pod-space is concentrated in the arms. This also simplified the
design process but in the process made it impossible to fit jump-jets.


The primary configuration is sometimes dubbed the mini-Timber Wolf with paired
lasers in the arms and missile launchers at the shoulders. In contrast to this
balanced approach, the A configuration is a pure SRM boat while the B
configuration is entirely armed with long range missiles.


With a long Occupation Zone that boasts a fanatical population base the Smoke
Jaguars laid out the C configuration for policing their conquests. A brutal mix
of machine guns, lasers, missiles and advanced electronics cuts through
guerillas and 'technicals' with ease - it's sourly joked that the C stands for
'crowd control'.


A relatively recent development, the D acts as a sniper, bringing excellent
long range energy fire to bear with a good chance of avoiding close actions the
Dust Liger can't survive.


Battle History:
The Dust Liger has seen no serious combat yet, but two were deployed in C
configuration recently when riots threatened the Smoke Jaguar's new command
centre in the Inner Sphere. Images of one, covered in flaming napalm gel and
still advancing into the rioters has been circulated by the Smoke Jaguars while
an extended version showing the 'Mech falling with the Mechwarrior being
overcome by the heat is circulated by resistance groups.

Clan Jade Falcon took the oppourtunity of the Quicksilver program to do the unthinkable.  Despite a long history of the Omnimech being considered the pinnacle of combat platforms, the modularity also made the concept of the Omnimech a valuable training tool permitting the Falcons (and their eventual Shark and Raven collaborators) to design an omnimech that while battle ready, could spend more time in Falconer Compounds teaching various skills of war without resorting to Star Leauge in Exile leftovers, or risking heavier and more expensive machines.  named the Caracara after a South American bird of prey  This new mech had it's configurations tweaked to train new Falcon Warriors how to combat Inner Sphere opponents.

Two key concerns dominated the base chassis.  in order to create a combat ready trainer, like the Chameleon and Crockett of old, there was a determination that the armor plating needed to be strong enough to withstand a certain amount of firepower.  as one Engineer put it "if the armor is less protective then the skeleton, why have armor at all?"  the second was a prediction of high heat designs.  double heat sinks were mounted in each leg so that in water rich battle fields heat build up of hotter configurations could be mitigated to a degree

The Primary Configuration is designed with multi threat tactics in mind, and to be able to use the infamous "Roschak manuver" to it's fullest extent, spiraling the Caracara ever closer and exposing it's foe to an ever increasing amount of firepower.

The Alpha Configuration shows that the Falcons at least learned the greatest lesson in fighting the inner sphere.  The Clans did not possess an extreme technological advantage against the inner sphere save in one area, that of energy weapon capability.  unfortunately clan combat rituals did not leverage this well and in many cases even victories where pyrrhic as the AFFC began leveraging batteries of LRM Carriers to exploit this docterine  the A Configuration counters this by utilizing an ER Large laser mounted in the left or right arm depending on pilots preference, ideally placing them in LRM launchers outermost range.  two anti missile systems, each with it's own dedicated ammunition bin, further protect the machine from LRM volleys while allowing the mech to provide more direct fire support to star mates.

Bravo Configuration, a contribution of the Snow Raven engineers who lent some expertise to the project,  is clearly a trainer designed specifically to train both mechwarriors in engaging aircraft, and aerospace pilots in how to avoid Surface to air fire.  in simulations it has shown to be some success in countering cavalry vehicles favored by the Davion half of the AFFC.  whether or not this configuration will leave the Falconer commands is unknown though.

Charlie Configuration is a mimmick of the Firefly Battlemech.  though it's leaping capabilities are limited compared to it's potential, the all energy armament lends well to extended tours.  The Falcons likewise have become less stubborn about the use of Arrow IV Batteries, making the Charlie a decent Spotter thanks to it's TAG

The Delta and Echo Configurations were last minute additions presented by a Shark/Falcon collaboration that was worried about infantry and battle armor being deployed by inner sphere forces.  Almost omitted from the official report, simulation runs showed enough merit to be returned.  the Echo Configuration clearly apes the FS9-H Firestarter first developed during the Reunifacation Wars, more information on it's capabilities can be found in technical manuals for that mech.  Delta Configuration is devastating if unimaginative.  relying on volume of fire, an impressive 14 SRM 2 racks can spray enough missiles to keep any Battle armor squad's head down, or roast vehicles and infantry alive with infernos

That's too bad Abele. You still have until Friday midnight to change your mind. The more the merrier so I'm hoping you do. It isn't that hard. Give me a overview with a Clan or Clans and a hook that makes your Mech unique. Capabilities is cake cause your just rehashing what you designed. Deployment could be Clans who designed it or are interested/disinterested in your machine. Then keep writing till you have something you like.

It's all good. Of the four designs, all four had as much pod space as mine or more. Another had the same speed. All had equal or less armor. 20 tons doesn't give you a lot of wiggle room, especially when a minimum movement profile has to be met. An omni in this particular challenge can only go 6/9/X or 7/11/X, use an XL, Endo and Ferro-fibrous to get enough pod space to put in a halfway decent weapons mix. Nearly every one had something similar to my top four configs, so I would have offered little or no extra spice to the contest. I don't think there will be much varieity until we get above 40 tons in weight.

Yup I haven't seen a quad entrant yet either.  There are some great submissions in already that is true but there are plenty of possibilities here. The zombie was limited because of its fusion engine but the XL creates more of a movement curve. Sure you can drop it down to 6/9 for max pod space but as MA points out you only slightly degrade that pod space with larger XL engines and light armor (speed is armor). You can add a MASC as well for tactical manuvering bunch of stuff anyone can do.

It's all good. Of the four designs, all four had as much pod space as mine or more. Another had the same speed. All had equal or less armor. 20 tons doesn't give you a lot of wiggle room, especially when a minimum movement profile has to be met. An omni in this particular challenge can only go 6/9/X or 7/11/X, use an XL, Endo and Ferro-fibrous to get enough pod space to put in a halfway decent weapons mix. Nearly every one had something similar to my top four configs, so I would have offered little or no extra spice to the contest. I don't think there will be much varieity until we get above 40 tons in weight.

Actually, you can get up to 9 tons of pod-space on a chassis moving at 8/12 if you are willing to go with the armor protection of a Fire Moth, showing here:

At 8/12 it would crossinto the speedster (Werewolf) category. I'm already working on 25-tonners (Zombie and Speedster as Mist Lynx fits the assailant role)

25 tons. is almost as bad. 30 and up allows for some creativity, but I beleive the Zombie is the only open category there.
