Quicksilver Program #3: 25 ton Zombie OmniMech

Before we press on ahead lets take a quick look back at the completed 20 ton Omni series for the Clans. First of course you had the canon Fire Moth which will serve as the Werewolf of the weight class which is being produced by the Ghost Bears. Second was the Nightcrawler built by the Burrocks which is the Zombie twenty tonner for the Clans. Lastly the Bloodwing which was designed by the Snow Ravens but will built by the Blood Spirits. Figured the name is appropriate for such a partnership and with the Spirits all geared up to produce a 20 tonner this Vampire will do nicely.

Now onto the 25 tonners as many have been expecting. Here we already have two OmniMechs which arguably perform different roles under Quicksilver. The venerable Mist Lynx or Koshi has been in production by the Smoke Jaguars since 2926 and is in widespread use throughout the Toumans of the Clans at this time. While it only has 7.5 tons for pod space because of its integral jump jets the ilKhan has decided to accept it as the Vampire (Assailant) because of the sheer number of new designs that already have to be created for Quicksilver. The newer Fire Falcon deployed by the Jade Falcons which just entered full scale production this year will serve as the Werewolf (Speedster).

This still leaves the Clans with a need to fill at 25 tons. Yup this is another Zombie OmniMech powered by a Standard Fusion engine. Since we are still in the Light category the movement minimum of 6/9 will remain for this contest. As a recommendation to all potential designers don’t settle for the lowest possible speed. For these small machines speed is armor. Remember that survivability above all, low costs, ease of production, and use of existing material are also benefits here.

While some Clans will use Zombie OmniMechs in front line service do not forget other Clans disdain these designs. No doubt they will be relegated to second or third line service at best. This means some Clans may possibly hold them in reserve as replacement for down equipment, training or testing gear, and even lesser roles. These Clans should not be the ones designing such equipment so when your creating this Zombie keep this in mind. Also try not to double dip. If you have seen a Clan building a Light OmniMech already go somewhere else. Tell me which Clan built and why? It doesn’t mention other Clans helping or challenging for possession either. Here is a list of which Clans prefer what equipment in 3052.

This work would not only follow the progression of Clan equipment in this alternate setting but the InnerSphere’s as well. I’m really looking forward to the day when this piece is complete.

I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program like Heavy Metal Pro cause it makes things easier on me. Overview:
Clan Goliath Scorpion were very much interested in building an in-expensive
OmniMech to bolster their small touman and the prospect of getting resources
from the other Clans to help in production was far too good to miss.


Chassis design started with the classic Mist Lynx but to meet the
specifications a standard fusion engine was needed. Removing the jump-jets
provided enough spare tonnage to fit the engine and another ton of armour.


Capabilities:
With enough speed and armour to survive most circumstances the Wind Claw has to
give up something and the breaking point was the pod-space. Even so, the
Goliath Scorpions elected to hardwire an ECM suite into the design.


With slightly less space than the Fire Moth has, the most common configuration
draws on one of the most feared versions of the smaller OmniMech: five medium
lasers with a targeting computer. Goliath Scorpion warriors have found this
highly effective for running battles, using cover to cool between salvos.


The A variant packs the much-feared Clan PPC while the B uses four LRM
launchers, both operating on the basis that fighting from a lengthy range will
reduce the accuracy and volume of incoming fire. While the A variant is made
use of by the Goliath Scorpions, the B variant is more common with Clan Wolf
warriors who won the right to test the new design.


The C variant mixes SRMs and lasers to support a scouting role with the Beagle
Active Probe while the D variant attempts to balance long-range sniping
capability with a short range sting. The jumpjets from the Mist Lynx are
restored in the E variant, which also sports an anti-missile system - at the
expense of further depleting the limited armament.


Battle History:
Clan Goliath Scorpion allowed Clan Wolf to employ the Wind Claw for testing
purposes. This led to a brief employment of two Wind Claws against a ComGuards
information-gathering raid. The Wind Claws ferried Elementals in to engage
ComGuards infantry and Mechwarrior Hannibal employed his LRMs in an anti-air
capacity against ComGuard helicopters while the Elementals and his comrade
dealt with the infantry that had been aboard the helicopters. Without their
transport the infantry surrendered, which Hannibal claimed to have been his
plan all along.

The Allard was brought forth by Galaxy Commander Phelan Ward as part of his Clans contribution to the Quicksilver program.  Kell was already a master light Mech pilot, and thanks to his upbringing had extensive knowlege of how the Inner Sphere fought and how the clans could combat thier tactics.  using a paradigm suggested by a Coyote Scientist called "Perpendicular Warfare" The Deployment of the Allard requires an extensive rethinking for the Clans in terms of how to engage in battle.

The Allard (named after a Cousin of CG Ward's) utilizes Endo Steel and Ferro Fibrous armor, but lacks an advanced engine.  always one for breaking the rules, Ward and his engineering team designed the mech slower then specifications asked intentionally.  instead they opted for a quadrapedal battlemech frame, allowing the machine to be more maneuverable and engage targets much more rapidly.  The enhanced armor protection was designed to repel a heavy autocannon or Inner Sphere grade PPC Blast to any one frontal location.  most shockingly, Ward flagrantly ignored the speed requirements set out by the IlKhan.  his argument being that mechs that emphasized durability are also designed to make slow, steady advances, something his teams proposal provides.

the crown jewel of this design however is the Omnimech capable turret.  the proposal was put forth by Clan Goliath Scorpion originally for thier "Fire Scorpion" Battlemech, and rejected more out of tradition then an technical or engineering reason.  when Galaxy Commander Ward heard of this technology, he immediately trialed for it.  fresh from his success at Tukkyidd, the Scorpions yielded without a shot fired.

the Primary Configuration plays naturally to the Allards strengths.  with an LRM 20 and deep ammunition bins, the Primary can find natural cover, lower itself into a hull down position and bombard an enemy from range.  With a friendly NARC spotter, this machine can even be used indirectly.

Alternate Configuration A was originally a proposed configuration for the Ice Ferret mech, and designed for multi threat attacks.  a large laser provides long range direct fire ensuring there is no where to hide or run from this menace.  twin Medium lasers and SRMs allow the Allard to engage targets close up, particularly shredding enemy battle armor and vehicles.

Alternate B is a dedicated urban combatant, though criticized for the half ton of weight that was underutilized.

Alternate Configuration C is a Snipers dream.  again best utilized from a prepared position, the ERPPC is slaved to a dedicated targeting computer, and an ECM suit both protects the mech from advanced electronics, as well as helps disguise the mech when in a prepared position.

Free Rasalhauge has shown the clans that they need to constantly fear aerospace fighters.  The abject failure of Clan Technology in the sky has been an embarrassment that few are willing to accept.  Alternate D is a design that is meant to exist in bulk and act as Anti Aircraft Artillery to protect the Cluster from Aerospace Fighters.

Though many in the council of Khans publicly balked at the presentation of the Allard, for it's name, for it's quadrapedal design, the use of "unproven technology", flagrent disregard for adherence to design standards, and for the fact that it came from a freeborn, the IlKhan publicly laughed, asking the council "only a spheroid could think in ways we could not.  Is it his failure... or ours?"  the design now rests in the Grand Council's hands.

JP your OmniMech doesn't meet the criteria which are still in effect. HOWEVER, when an innovation comes along like this rules are made to be broken. Well done, the Allard shall definitely be considered. Folks this is how to break the law.... in style!

Come on Shadow Wraith do not just give up, roll up your sleeves and get out your T square. Engineer me an OmniMech - DAMN IT!!!

Drakensis nice job on the Wind Claw, if the first two designs are any indication this is gonna be one hell of a design contest!!!!!

I had been sitting on this since the quicksilver plan started, I had to modify it a touch to fit the zombie paradigm(was outfitting a speedster cause I forgot the Fire falcon), but with limitations comes inspiration.

don't expect me to flagrently violate the rules like this all the time, but I was always gonna put a 25 ton Quad with a turret in the show.

RED DEATH

Overview
Determined not to be rejected (again), the Khans of Clan Blood Spirit teamed up with Mandrills from Kindraa Sainze to design the rather unique Red Death OmniMech.  Initial schematics called for a biped design massing 25-tons, moving at the same speed as the front-line Kit Fox and Adder OmniMechs and using a standard fusion engine to allow the largest possible war-load on the frame (8.5 tons).

Unexpectedly, however, the two leading Warriors assigned to oversee the development process were both abtakha . . . Star Captain Grant Solheim was a former Goliath Scorpion now serving Clan Blood Spirit and Star Captain Erica Mendoza was a former Hell's Horse serving Clan Fire Mandrill. 

Both Warriors were concerned that the basic design concept was simply . . . too conservative to win the ilKhan's competition.  However, both Warriors were very familiar with the design and operation of quad BattleMechs (not OmniMechs) fielded by their Clans.  During drinks one evening, the two were exchanging ideas when suddenly the concept of a quad-OmniMech was broached.

Despite concerns over the lack of internal space in such a design, the two were convinced that it could be achieved . . . and it would have the advantage of possessing greater armor than the majority of 25-ton designs (which on a Zombie-type OmniMech would prove crucial). 

Without informing their Khans, the two changed the parameters that the Scientists were assigned.  Three months later, the Red Death (named after a particularly vicious species of avian native to Eden that impales its prey on long thorns of a spiky tree) was born.

While the Khans were initially furious, the performance of the new OmniMech quickly ended their protests . . . and forgiveness was quietly offered to the two Warriors.  In December of 3052, the first examples of the Red Death arrived on Strana Mechty for the ilKhan to judge.

Capabilities
Massing 25-tons, the Red Death uses a 150-rate standard fusion engine that allows for a walking speed of 64.8 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 97.2 kph.  No fixed equipment was mounted on the design, which uses a quad (rather than bided) motive system.

This design choice allowed the Scientists to fit the Red Death with five full tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (98.96% of maximum coverage); in conjunction with the use of endo-steel internal structure, the war-machine was able to preserve 8.0 tons of pod-space for weapons and equipment . . . although space in the OmniMech was quite limited (just 37% of the nominal internal space remained available).

By concentrating the bulk of the FF-armor and ES-internals in the right and left torso, design engineers were able to install all four double-strength heat sinks unable to fit within the engine core into the legs . . . potentially allowing the Red Death to use shallow water to increase its cooling ability.

But the engineers were able to make good use of both the tonnage and internal space.

The Red Death Prime features an ER PPC in the center torso, supported by a right torso SRM-4 launcher (with 25 missile salvoes stored in the right torso as well). Just the standard 10 DHS are fitted, but the Prime is perfectly heat neutral.

Configuration A carries an ER Large Laser (center torso), supported by two LRM-5 launchers (right torso and left torso), each fed by a ton of ammunition (48 missile salvoes total, 24 per launcher).  This configuration also runs quite cool.

The B Configuration features an Active Probe and an ECM Suite . . . with the weapons configuration consisting of three Medium Pulse Lasers (center torso, right torso, and left torso).  Even less heat is generated than the Red Death A.

Configuration C does have SOME capacity to overheat . . . if both Streak SRM-4 launchers lock onto target.  Mounted in the left and right torsos, these weapons share a single ton of ammunition (right torso, with 25 missile salvoes).  Secondary armament consists of two ER Medium Lasers (both mounted in the center torso) and two ER Small Lasers (right torso and left torso).

The D Configuration carries four LRM-5 launchers (two each in the right and left torsos) supplied by two tons of ammo (48 missile salvoes or 12 salvoes per launcher).  Although possessing just half the endurance of the Red Death A, the Red Death D has twice the throw-weight.  Back-up weapons consist of two ER Medium Lasers mounted in the center torso.  This configuration is perfectly heat neutral even on a run.

Configuration E features six jump jets (three each right torso and left torso) for a 180-meter jump capability.  Armament is light, with two ER Medium Lasers (right torso and left torso) and two ER Small Lasers (right torso and left torso) tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer (center torso).  A TAG system rounds out the payload.  Like the Prime and D, the Red Death E is heat neutral even on a run.

The F Configuration also carries six jump jets (three each in the right and left torso), but is optimized for anti-personnel work.  An Active Probe in the head allows for locating hostile infantry, while each side torso carries a machine-gun and a flamer (with 100 bursts of MG ammo stored in the center torso).  A center torso mounted Medium Pulse Laser rounds out the ordnance and provides some anti-'Mech/Vehicle capabilities.

Configuration G uses every single available square centimeter of internal volume.  Armament consists of two ER Medium Lasers (right torso and left torso) and six ER Small Lasers (two each center torso, right torso, and left torso) tied into a head-mounted one-ton Targeting Computer.  Two additional DHS (for a total of twelve) provides perfect heat dissipation when either walking or running.

Finally, the Red Death H is quite unusual.  Designed for underwater operations, it fails to mount an Underwater Maneuvering Unit.  However, its weapon load consists of two ER Medium Lasers (center torso), two LRT-5 torpedo launchers (right torso and left torso, fed by a single ton of ammo in the right torso), and two SRT-4 torpedo launchers (right torso and left torso, fed by a single ton of ammo in the left torso).  Although the design appears to overheat, being submerged allows the four leg-mounted DHS to operate at greater efficiency,
allowing the Red Death H to be unconcerned about heat generation.  Although slow, the added stability of a quad-design beneath the waves was deemed an overall positive trait.

Deployment
To date, only a handful of Red Death prototypes have been produced and handed over to the Ebon Keshik for examination and entry in the Project Quicksilver Competition.  Unfortunately, the design has already cost both the Spirits and Mandrills one Warrior each.  While the Khans may have officially forgiven Star Captains Solheim and Mendoza, the rank-and-file of both Clans have not.  Never one to waste an opportunity, and seeking to reward their out-of-the-box thinking, ilKhan Kerensky offered both Solheim and Mendoza a slot in the Ebon Keshik.  Faced with increasing aggression by their own Clan trothkin, Grant Solheim and Erica Mendoza accepted the ilKhan's offer, forswearing their former (and current) Clan to serve only the ilKhan.

constitute a a new trinary plus make up losses suffered at the hands of Kindraa
Sainze following the Invasion Trials.


Payne scientists decided on using the powerplant and some components from the
Star League-era Firefly Mechs that they had in storage in one of their nearly
depleted caches, while using plans from a failed program from early in the
Golden Century.

While the powerplant allows the Shadow Marmoset to travel at speeds approaching
100kph, the design team felt that was not quite fast enough so they added a
MASC unit to enhance it battlefield mobility.


Imitial testing has been promising. Enough so that the Paynes are ready to ramp
up to full production. Kindraa Beyl-Grant has discovered that the Paynes have
been working on a new Omni and have offered to supply with raw materials in
exchange for binary's worth of Shadow Marmosets to augment their ground forces
and they have offered to design a couple of configurations that better suit
their needs and offensive doctrine.


Variants:
The Prime configuration is hunter-killer armed with an ER PPC and a pair of
lighter weight lasers. It's a duelling design meant to take out other light
Mechs.


The A configuration is an homage to the FFL-3SLE Firefly from which they got
the powerplant. The six jumpjets give it greater battlefield mobility while the
trio of lasers gives it enough staying power. The LRM-5 gives it a longer reach
on the battlefield.


The B configuration is the scout/striker model featuring an array of lasers
that cover all ranges. An active probe helps find those enemies that have
chosen not to engage in honorable combat.


The C configuration harkens to the Commando IIC that has frustrated several of
the other Kindraas in battle, both recent and historical. An SRM-6 and a brace
of SRM-4s give the Marmoset an aggressive short-ranged punch for such a light
machine. A pair of ER Medium laser act as backups to the SRMS once their ammo
runs out.


The D configuration is a jumper with only four jumpjets. The big surprise is
the quad medium laser battery that is matched to a targeting computer. This
model comes from the Beyl-Grant scientists as part of the deal they have with
the Paynes.


The E configuration is the oddball configuration that features the Ultra AC/2.
An ER Small laser and twin machines act as the only backup weapons. The primary
use of this model is as an anti-air and anti-vehicle platform. Needless to say,
Payne scientists don't expect that this configuration will get much use.

Sparrow

A somewhat surprising design coming from Clan Jade Falcon, the Sparrow it seems was prompted by the Falcons desire for a suitable Light 'Mech for Garrison work in the Inner Sphere. 

Needless to say Jade Falcon Scientists under the watchful eye of Falcon Warriors decided to favor both speed and armor for this entry.   While at a significant cost of pod space for weapons, Falcon Warriors weren't overly concerned given the roles they intended the Sparrow to perform. Capable of a top speed of over 129 kilometers an hour, the Sparrow was meant to be a scout first, a skirmisher second, and finally pressed into service to suppress unruly populaces.   


What the Jade Falcon Scientists produced in only 30 days was an Omni version of the LocustIIC as a very deliberate insult to the Smoke Jaguars.   Star Captain Jonathan Uston, a Falcon Mechwarrior well known for his personal feuds with Smoke Jaguars has gleefully endorsed the new adaptation and was said to be the driving force behind this blatant omnization.   That being said Falcon scientists are already looking towards developing a field kit to upgrade all Locust IIC's in the Clan's Touman to the Sparrow standard.

The Prime nods to the battlemech its an omni of inspiration for this brand new design armed with 8 ER small lasers and medium pulse laser. A strong anti infantry unit, this variant is well known and familiar to Clan Warriors. 

The Alpha variant is a purpose built skirmisher featuring a ER Large Laser, a small pulse laser and more importantly a Targeting Computer to make long range, high speed shots a possibility.  Jonathon Uston favors this variant and pressed hard to see it developed. 

Falcon Scientists included Beta to deal with the always troublesome prospect of garrison work inside the InnerSphere.  Meant for suppressing riots within urban areas the Beta variant includes jumpjets, flamers and an active probe to crush any foolish attempt to rebel against the Falcons.   

Delta was designed to be an alternative skirmisher equipped with a Streak SRM4 on either arm along with a ER medium Laser.   The single ton of ammo is considered more than sufficient to feed both SRM's for a single battle.   A favored dueling variant, Falcon Warriors often focus on high speed passes instead of simply grinding away at an opponent.
