Quicksilver Program #4: 30 ton Zombie OmniMech

Yeah I know, another Zombie. ::) Sorry folks but the existing 30 ton Clan OmniMechs dictate this course of action. The venerable Kit Fox or Uller was originally produced by Clan Cloud Cobra in 2890. Clan Jade Falcon narrowly won the rights to manufacture it along with Clan Snow Raven who traded for the production rights. This OmniMech with over half its mass (16 tons) thanks to a 180 XL engine (6/9) is a classic example of a Vampire or Assailant that concentrates on firepower.

More recently (3037) Clan Ice Hellion designed the Arctic Cheetah or Hankyu which was manufactured on Foster. Unfortunately for them along came Smoke Jaguar and conquered the place in typical fashion. With a 240XL engine (8/12/6) this OmniMech has only 9.5 tons of pod space making it a Werewolf or Speedster that uses it’s superior movement to gain a decisive advantage. Also important to remember in this design contest is the consequences to Clan Ice Hellion of discontinuing their mid-range Hellion.

As it no longer fits into this Unified Clan program the Hellion project which was likely underway in some capacity since the loss of the Artic Cheetah will be dropped or redirected somehow. This is a result of the necessary focus on the OmniMechs of the Battlefield Trinity which will best utilize the Clans limited manufacturing capacity and amplify existing logistical networks. So I will give special consideration or added weight to those designs put forward by the Ice Hellions in this contest as well as the 35 ton challenges.  ;)

So what is the exact criteria for this contest? Well an OmniMech which masses thirty tons and as it is another Zombie one that is powered by a Standard Fusion engine. My movement minimum of 6/9 will remain in effect for this Light machine. Again as a recommendation to all potential designers please don’t settle for the lowest possible speed. For these small light weights speed is armor. Remember that survivability above all, low costs, ease of production, and use of existing material are also benefits here.

Also I haven’t forgotten those would be design contestants who jumped the gun in previous threads. Both the Shadow Asp by masterarminas which was a Goliath Scorpion design and the Gremlin by Abele are qualified under the above criteria. I will consider these two and forgive me if I’ve overlooked any other design. However they lack the proper fluff and I’d like to see them both fleshed out more.

Please do not forget some Clans disdain these Zombie designs. While some Clans will use these OmniMechs in front line service others will relegate them to second or third line service at best. This means some Clans may possibly hold them in reserve as replacement for down equipment, training or testing gear, and even lesser roles. These Clans should not be the ones designing such equipment so when your creating this Zombie keep this in mind. Also try not to double dip. If you have seen a Clan building a Light OmniMech already go somewhere else. Tell me which Clan built and why? It doesn’t mention other Clans helping or challenging for possession either. Here again is a list of which Clans prefer what equipment in 3052.

I’m still hoping to do a Technical Readout 3059 for this setting and when I do the winners shall appear in this fanbook. This work would not only follow the progression of Clan equipment in this alternate setting but the InnerSphere’s as well. I’m really looking forward to the day when this tome is finished.

I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program like Heavy Metal Pro cause it makes things easier on me. SHADOW ASP

Overview
When the ilKhan issued his call for a competition for a new series of OmniMechs, Khan N'Buta of Clan Star Adder was keenly interested.  Seeking to improve the tactical (and strategic) flexibility of his Clan, he had for a long time pushed his Scientists into exploring options such as low-cost standard engine outfitted OmniMechs for garrison duties.  Dozens of such designs existed in computer files, although none had ever progressed so far as an actual prototype.

That oversight was now corrected.

Determined to be an early winner over his rival Khans, N'Buta examined the various proposals for a new 30-ton Zombie-type OmniMech.  One in particular, code-named Shadow Asp, caught his eye and piqued his interest.  Although not as fast as some proposals, the Shadow Asp was highly mobile (through the inclusion of fixed jump jets) and very well-protected.  Engineers noted that the design was as fast as the existing Kit Fox and as mobile as the Arctic Cheetah, while being far less expensive to produce than either of those two war-machines (albeit at the cost of available pod-space).

After careful examination of the proposal, Khan N'Buta authorized the Scientists to build ten . . . five for entry in Project Quicksilver and five more to be field-tested by the Adders of Kappa Galaxy.

So far, Khan N'Buta has been extremely pleased with the Shadow Asp and he has high hopes for success in the Project Quicksilver Trials.

Capabilities
Based upon the SLDF Falcon BattleMech (of which the Adders had more than one hundred stored in secure underground caches), the Shadow Asp shared the same basic build and 180-rate standard fusion engine as that venerable design.  Although slower than many other Clan light-weight OmniMechs (64.8 kilometers per hour walking; 97.2 kph running), the 30-ton Shadow Asp featured six fixed jump-jets allowing for jumps of up to 180 meters without difficulty.

Five and one-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating gave the new war-machine the absolute maximum possible protection on a 30-ton frame.  To preserve as much space as possible for weapons and equipment, the Scientists built the entire design around a newly produced Endo-Steel II internal structure frame (however to save time and resources, the engines and jump-jets, suitably refurbished, came directly from the moth-balled Falcons).

Eight tons remained for pod-space once the base chassis had been assembled.

The Shadow Asp Prime would be armed with two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm), supported by a pair of SRM-6 launchers (right torso and left torso, each with a ton of ammunition for 15 dual missile-pack salvoes).  An Active Probe installed in the head rounds out the design.  Although capable of overheating, Adder Warriors note that the overheat is relatively low and something any competent MechWarrior should be able to deal with.

A variant of the Prime (the Prime-2) was unveiled at the same time.  This configuration simply replaces the Active Probe with an ECM Suite.  The Prime and Prime-2 are intended to be partenered within a Recon or Scout Star to provide full-spectrum sensor capability and electronic warfare coverage.

Configuration A pays homage to the old FLC-series Falcon.  Two ER Small Lasers (one each in the right and left torso) are fitted, along with two Machine-Guns (both in the left arm along with a half-ton of ammunition).  Unlike the old SLDF Falcon, all of these weapons are forward-firing . . . and in place of the original design's Medium Laser, Adder engineers mounted instead a Large Pulse Laser in the right arm!  Hard-hitting, long-ranged, and deadly accurate, this weapon makes the Shadow Asp A lethal.

Configuration B is armed with a long-range ER Large Laser in the right arm and a Streak SRM-6 launcher (with one ton of ammo for 15 salvoes) in the left arm.  Excess overheat production is minimal.

The Shadow Asp C is a deadly in-fighter armed with four Medium Pulse Lasers (one each in the right arm, left arm, right torso, and left torso); once again, excessive overheat production is not a major concern even on a jumping Alpha-strike.

Configuration D provides limited Air-Defense to its Star-mates.  The main weapon is an LB-2X autocannon in the right torso with one ton of ammo (45 bursts), supported by two ER Medium Lasers (right arm and left arm).

Configuration E features an LRM-10 rack with Artemis IV in the right arm with two tons of ammo (for 24 salvoes), supported by two ER Medium Lasers (left arm and right torso) and an ER Small Laser (head). 

The Shadow Asp F has been equipped with a one-ton Targeting Computer in the head.  Each arm carries an ER Medium Laser, supported by four ER Small Lasers (two each in the right and left torso).  The right arm also carries a TAG system for target designation when artillery has been bid.  Two additional double-strength heat sinks (twelve in total) are fitted to the Shadow Asp F allowing the war-machine to remain heat neutral even on a jumping Alpha-Strike.

An alternate version (the F-2) removes the TAG and replaces it with two more ER Small Lasers (one each in the right arm and left arm) and is used when artillery has not been bid.  Although the F-2 runs hotter than the standard F Configuration, Adder Warriors welcome the added short-range firepower.

Finally, there is the very unusual G Configuration.  Intended for use as a dueling OmniMech, this configuration is capable of generating rather high levels of excess overheat . . . but the lack of onboard munitions and the fixed jump jets prevents this from being as undesirable as on most OmniMechs.  Taking the Zombie concept to its logical conclusion, the Shadow Asp G concentrates all of its weapon systems in the torsos and head, leaving the arms as 'buffer armor' and allowing the configuration to continue fighting even after losing one (or both!) side torsos.  The primary long-range weapon is an ER Large Laser mounted in the head.  For close-range savaging of the enemy, EIGHT ER Small Lasers are fitted to the side torsos (four each in the right torso and left torso).

Actually, Takiro, I won't be entering this design in the contest.  8/12/x movement is just as fast as the Arctic Cheetah (which is a Speedster) and it has VERY low pod-space (only 5.5 tons!).  Instead, I will recycling the name for the OmniMech posted above. 

One note:  we are getting at the point where speeds much above minimum is getting expensive.  At 6/9/x, a 30-ton OmniMech with a standard engine and maximum FF armor will have 11 tons remaining for pod-space.  My design uses 3 tons for jump jets, leaving 8.  Bumping up the speed to 7/11/x leaves 8 tons for pod-space . . . without jump-jets.  Going to 8/12/x leaves just 5.5 tons.  Adding MASC lowers pod-space by a ton, but provides only for a temporary boost in speed.

Now, a Werewolf or Vampire might well lower the armor to compensate . . . but we are talking ZOMBIEs here.  8 tons of pod-space is 26.6% of the frame's total mass . . . which is pretty good for a standard engine 'Mech.  5.5 tons would drop below 20% (18.3% to be exact), which is rather low.  11 tons is GREAT (36.6%!!) but still within your suggested range.

Before i get to the drawing board, the hellion should be reconsidered in the Uller or arctic cheetahs place (would fit the bill for either.)
 As it is faster and tougher the then the uller and packs more then enough firepower, and the hankyu is freaking lame

Here is a modified version of the Gremlin. It makes a modest jump up in speed, but sacrifices a ton of pod space in the exchange. Could have been worse withot the addition of Endo-Steel. The configs on the orginal version caried over fairly well, though there were minor changes due to the weight loss. The fluff is not great as I lack the writing skills of MA or JP.

Overview:
Clan Burrock has always been short on resources for much of their history and
their touman reflects this. However, they are still looking to develop a cost
effective light OmniMech. Burrock scientists believe that they have struck
armament gold with the Gremlin when they came across the schematics for the
HER-1Sb Hermes in an ancient data file. With the lack of sufficient production
Extra Light engines, they settled on a lower capacity 210 standard power plant.
This gave the Gremlin a maximum speed of nearly 120kph. To protect the pilot
and machine five tons of ferro-fibrous armoris spread liberally across the
frame.


The visage has been changed from the Hermes and now has a more sinister
demon-like appearance. The multi-pronged horns on the head are actually a
combination of radio antennas and passive sensor receivers. The hunched legs
are also intentional to give it a more aggressive look.


Variants:
Prime: As the main configuration should be, the Prime is the heavy hitter
equipped with a menacing ER PPC with a medium pulse laser and an ER small laser
as backup weapons


Alpha: This is the short-ranged special and is equipped with matchings of small
pulse laser, ER medium and ER Small lasers. An SRM-2 is mounted as well anc
carry all varieties of available ammunition types.


Beta: This is the trooper varian armed with a LRM-10 and a SRM-4 missile
launcher. Backup weapons consist of a trio of medium lasers mounted in three
separate locations to give it decent coverage in all range categories.


Gamma: This is elemental hunter and is equipped with an active probe and an ECM
suite to aid it in this role. Due to the addition of four jumpjets, armament is
limited to a brace of ER Medium lasers, a medium pulse lasers and ER small
laser.


Delta: This is another trooper model requested by the Burrock Khan and it
features an ER Large laserm an ER Medium laser and two ER Small lasers. For
added short-ranged punch, a six-tube SRM launcher is also mounted.

You are right there MA, speed is getting more expensive in regards to weight as we go upwards. Also structure and armor are on their way up enabling more benefits to increased plating rather than more power plant. It is as always a careful balancing act between these two factors. It will be interesting who can do it best.  ;)

Agreed JP but the Hellion is still early in the design phase with production not occurring for another seven years in the canon timeline. I would certainly consider the Hellion beating out the Arctic Cheetah it just doesn't exist yet to challenge it and producing them to challenge when other designs are needed would be a waste of resources impacting the Clan war effort. Might not only be for not though - perhaps the Hellions can alter the design and make an effective contribution.  ;)

Overview:
The Cloud Cobras started the development of their candidate using isorla from
Clan Fire Mandrill. Several incomplete chassis for Mandrill light 'Mechs were
available and as the scientists noticed: it's almost quadrupedal as it is...

The decision on what to do about the engines was decided when the Scorpions
found a shipment of 210-rated fusion reactors untouched for centuries due to a
lack of any purpose for them. The price was right - no one had wanted them
anyway so the impoverished Cloud Cobras won them for a song (literally, the
Trial of Possession was settled when a Cloud Cobra male voice choir were deemed
to have out-sung the barber-shop quartet of Snow Raven laborers manning the
storage facility.)


Capabilities:
The Desert Jackal is fast and carries as much armour as the frame will carry.
Weapon space is limited and focused on using highly efficient Clan weapons. In
almost all cases these are concentrated in the boxy weapon-pods in the
shoulders. There's no jump-jet configuration, somewhat limiting movement in
terrain but in anything approaching open ground lets the Desert Jackal reach an
impressive 150kph at the sprint and sustain well over 100 kph.


The Prime configuration is a medium and close combatant, using arrays of medium
and small lasers to deliver brutal salvos. The A configuration is more of a
long-range duelist adding ECM and an anti-missile system to protect it while
picking away with the single large laser.


The B configuration has the most powerful weapon available: an extended range
PPC backed up with a flamer, a less sophisticated version of the A. Meanwhile
the C optin is uncompromisingly configured for close attack, using pulse lasers
and machineguns linked with a targeting computer.

Ok here is my submission the Zorro Sangre 30 ton omni mech.

Overview

The Zorro Sangre is another mech that Warrior Merchant's of Clan Dimond Shark came up with after reviewing the ilKhan's requirements for the quicksilver program.  After checking with certain other Clan's.  They teamed up with Clan Blood Spirit in producing this prototypes. If approved by the IlKhan, the production will be the split evenly between the two clans.

The chassis they decided to use was the tried and tested Kit Fox to save on development costs.  The warriors, merchants and scientist caste members assigned to the development team took the lead in acquiring the appropriate chassis via trade or trials.  They manage to acquire seven chassis and got the plans for the design to produce an additional fourteen chassis for the testing of each Clan’s warriors.

They redesigned it slightly to handle the increase in speed with the use of MASC and the addition of a targeting computer to all types.  The external appearance was kept to look like the Kit Fox to help it confuse its opponents.  By using a standard engine and standard armor the costs were kept low enough for Clan Blood Spirit to not complain enough that added cost of a Targeting computer.  With the maximum speed of 120 kph(141 kph with MASC engaged) this mech is counting on its speed to help it survive.

   The overall mission for this mech that can be used in raids and that is not in constant need of ammunition.  During the development of the Zorro Sangre, a group of scientists from Clan Dimond Shark decided to see what other other models they could come up with if they changed the standard armor for ferro fiberous.  Thus they developed the Type E and F

The Base model was designed to fight the inner sphere infantry and eventual development of any inner sphere battlearmor.  It mounts a MG and a flamer in each arm and a MG and a ER Med laser in the torso.  The MG and ER Med laser are tied to a Targeting computer and an active probe to help it find infantry in urban areas and in forest or jungles.

Type A was designed to be assist its fellow lance mates with a long range direct fire support with the use of the ER Lg laser  mated with the Targeting computer.  Jump jets were added to Type A to increase its mobility in urban and mountainous areas.

Type B was equiped with an ECM suite, a experimental Laser AMS, and four extended range lasers (three mediums and one light).  The development team decided that type B can be useful for raids and is independent of any supply since it has an all laser weaponry.  The biggest issue they have right now is the experimental Laser AMS.  It tends to increase the mech's heat when its being targeted by missles and could possible hinder the pilot from conducting an 'alpha' strike.

Type C was designed to be cheaper model that the Clan Blood Sprits can possibly produce.  The removed the targeting computer and armed the mech with an ER PPC and an ER Sm laser in each arm.   Also this model was designed to be independent of the need for ammo.

Type D is just like Type C that has no targeting computer.  But it has an all energy armament.  It mounts three ER small laser on the torso and an ER Med laser in each arm.  Jump jets were added to this model to increase its mobility and it can jump up to a distance of 210 meters.

Type E is a completely new mech.  The sub group that was responsible for this design decided to equip this model with ferro fiberous armor.  Even though it would increase the cost, the chances of it surviving increased.  Keeping with the theme of the Base model the Targeting computer was kept and was matched with five ER med lasers and an ECM suite to help it increase its chances of avoiding being targeted
 
Type F followed the Type E with the Ferro Fiberous armour  but its armament was more designed for Clan dueling combat in mind.  They attached the ER Med laser to the targeting computer and installed six SRM 2 with a ton of ammo. With only a ton of ammo, depending on the combat environment, the ammo can be switched to inferno rounds when its expecting to fight dezgra forces from the inner sphere.

Overview:
Clan Blood Spirit - long allies of the Fire Mandrills - seized on the
opportunity to spike the wheel of the Cloud Cobras by seizing part of their
stock of 210-rated fusion engines (destined for Desert Jackals).


To make use of the reactors, the Blood Spirit Scientists started with the
schematics of the long retired Coyotl - samples of which were still in their
inventory.


Capabilities:
Scaling the Coyotl down into the Crimson Bat stripped away tons of armour to
meet the required tonnage limits of the engine - itself more than a ton heavier
than the original.


The result is a Mech with light armour, better than average speed and
respectable firepower for its size. Mechwarriors are well advised to stay out
of range of opponents - making the Prime configuration excellent and the A
model with its targeting computer similarly effective.


A smaller targeting computer and jumpjets make the B model a deadly hit and run
artist while still outranging the Inner Sphere. Finally the C model hones this
to deadly effect, capable of hammering a target with more than thirty SRMs for
a sudden win or sudden defeat that appeals to many Clan mechwarriors.
