Do we have anyone else? How about a Steel Viper design?? Do you know in three Zombie design challenges we have had only one Viper entry?

You wanted a Steel Viper. Now you have one. I used the minimum sized engine (with MASC attached for 6/9[12]), so that I could gain maximum pod space (10 tons)

Overview:
The Gila Monster is Clan Steel Viper's first foray into designing a four-legged
Mech of any stripe. Borrowing technology from a couple of Scorpion battlemechs
from of their many Brian caches, Steel Viper scientists set out to achieve the
edict set down by the IlKhan. Lacking initial production for the 180-series
engine sought by the Viper scientists, technicians were able to scrounge enough
powerplants from Wyvern chassis found in a cache on New Kent. Of the eight
plants they coudl find only six still survive due to the less of two prototypes
due to crashes. After two years of stress filled work Viper scientists were
able to solve the motive issues thanks to the taking Golaith Scorpion
scientists taken as isorla in recent trials. The Scorpion scientist had much
experience with four-legged mech thanks to their work on the Fire Scorpion.


With the motive issues solved, the scientists went on to build six prototypes
each featuring one of the planned six standard confiugrations/



Variants:
The X1 configuration is a testament to the Steel Viper's fondness for the Ultra
autocannon. An Ultra AC/5 with one ton of ammunition is mounted in the right
torso, while two ER medium lasers are mounted in the left torso as backup
weapons.


The X2 carries the ER PPC with a medium and a small pulse laser as backup. To
keep Elememtals of its back, two Er small lasers are mounted in each torso to
cover the rea arcs of the Gila Monster.


The X3 features twin Streak SRM-4s as its primary weapons with an ER large
laser to be used to give cover fire as the Gila Monster advances in combat. An
ER medium laser is there for backup.


The X4 is the ammo-independent striker as it features matching pairs of ER
medium lasers and medium pilse lasers. A quartet of ER small laser is also
carried with two covering the rearward arcs. All of these lasers are tied into
a targeting computer, provided by the minds of the captured Goliath Scorpion
scientists, allowing for greater accuracy in combat.


The X5 is the indirect fire support model with an LRM-15 launcher with two tons
of ammunition and a brace of medium pulse lasers as backup. ER Small alser is
moounted rearward to discourage Elementals from attacking.


The X6 is a take on the X2 that replaces the ER PPC with a large pulse laser.
Backup weapons are two ER medium lasers and two rearward firing small pulse
lasers.

Natasha Kerensky gazed once more upon Strana Mechty, in a role she had never considered before leaving with the Dragoons nearly fifty years previously.

"Clan Wolf currently has over twelve hundred GM 120 engines salvaged from the fighting in the InnerSphere."  Natasha laid out the facts to the scientists and warriors behind her. "Engines we can break down for parts, build new Wasps and Stingers around, or potentially trade."

"However what Clan Wolf lacks is a basic design to provide the basis for a Garrison force.    That is where you come in.    I am ordering the design of a new Omni-mech based off of the Wasp 1A, however with a mass increase to 30 tons."

Clan Wolf was literally flush with GM 120 engines salvaged from the very large number of Wasps and Stingers destroyed in the last three years of fighting.   However Clan Wolf had very little desire to build even more Wasps and Stingers using the salvaged engines.

Instead Khan Kerensky ordered a new Omni design built, a 30 ton Mech that would use the GM 120 fusion engine and salvage as many components as possible from the Wasp.  In addition every part but the Clan Double Heat Sinks were designed to be produced locally, instead of relying upon parts imported from the Clan Homeworlds.

The plan is to stand up entire Clusters of the "SuperWasps" (four Mech Trinaries, a Trinary of Infantry, and if available a Trinary of IS ASF) at a time, to ensure Clan Wolf has its Occupation Zone gripped tightly.

The Prime Config features an UAC5 with two tons of ammo, an ERML and 120 meters of jumping capacity for a cool running Mech

Alpha Config runs hotter with two ERLL and a Targeting Computer, along with 120 meters of jumping capacity

Beta Config is a pure Fire support Mech with twin LRM15 launchers with 4 tons of ammo and a EML

Gamma Config with its 2 MPL and 6 SPL is heavily influenced by the Wolf Dragoons model of the Wasp

Delta Config with its ER PPC and Streak SRM 6 is an upgunned Wasp 1A, with more firepower along with 120 meters in jump capability

While the SuperWasp does violate the criteria for this contest I am will accept it. Might not win but it could spur other ideas! ;)

Alright gang that will do, time is up and I have made the call. I’d like to thank everyone who participated in this design contest which produced eight excellent entries by six designers. So here are the final results as determined by me without further delay.

First off we have the SuperWasp by fitzgerald. I liked the idea of using all those 120 Fusion Engines that Clan Wolf captured from the InnerSphere. The imagery of a “SuperWasp” is super cool as well and I am a sucker for the RoboTech art. However your far too slow for this contest and I would expect mobility in the form of jump jets on this Mech to be integral. While most of your configurations have jump jets I believe such devices would be part of this design. So if you don’t count jump jets you’d have 12 tons of pod space which is impressive but as most configs do there is really only 10. Advanced structure and armor could have pushed the boundaries of that pod space further however not doing so makes this proposal super cheap. Which to me is another plus. So fitz while I am saying nice job and very innovative use of existing material to produce a highly reliable garrison machine low speed and lack of mobility got me placing you in last place. Sorry, but all is not lost. I’m seriously considering an AirWolf LAM based on this design sporting high tech advancements and serving as recon element for the Clan. What do you think?

The Zorro Sangre by Shadow_Wraith is a Diamond Shark / Blood Spirit effort which left me confused. I don’t understand the name choice, well I do sort of. The Blood Fox as it should be would be great but why Spanish? Star League Standard English is the Clan language and such a departure from norms I do not see. LordGrayson got away with it for his Claybeg series because of its importance to the Blood Spirit. Use of the Kit Fox makes sense and again the name could have played in here. Why not something like the Blood Scent or the Crimson Highfin? The 7/11 movement with a MASC for tactical boosts of 14 is very nice. But the name was the biggest reason you placed seventh.

In sixth place I have the Infernus Sling by LordGrayson for the Blood Spirit and Fire Mandrill Clans. If you only picked a name! Yeah you have it in the fluff but I wish you just went with one. The Infernus or Infernal would have done nicely as it mixes between the Fire in Fire Mandrill and the Spirit in Blood Spirit if ya get my meaning, makes me think Fire Spirit. Nice combo. I did like the basis OmniMech’s basis which was the Sling of course. The 6/9 movement with a MASC for tactical boosts of 12 is pretty good and the 10 tons of pod space (1/3rd of the mass) seems high end for this challenge. Plus it had an armor factor of 105 which again was top end. So the design is good but the name really detracted from this otherwise excellent entry.

At number five I got the Crimson Bat by drakensis which is a Blood Spirit creation that ties in with his Desert Jackal entry. Overall I liked this design which had 10 tons of pod space (1/3rd of the mass) which is high end and 7/11 speed. The 67 armor factor was a bit low but the fluff was simple and effective. Again I liked the tie in to your other entry and the fact that this design was a scaled down Coyotl. Not too shabby.

The Desert Jackal again by drakensis was a Cloud Cobra original which I liked a little more than his later entry. This quad is a neat idea even if the singing Trail of Possession for the engine contained within the fluff was a tad whacky. I thought the inspiration for the design, which I can only assume was the Baboon, was a nice touch. I do wish there was a little something more fluff wise. The 6.5 tons of pod space is slighty more than 1/5th of the mass of the OmniMech which was the smallest. However the 7/11 movement with a MASC for tactical boosts of 14 is a nice touch along with a heavy 113 armor factor. So some pluses and some minuses but good enough for fourth overall.

Third place goes to the Shadow Asp by masterarminas which was Star Adder design based on the Falcon. Eight tons of pod space is sort of mid range for all our entries, not too bad. The only OmniMech with integral jump jets its 6/9/6 movement profile is pretty solid and I like the mobile. Plus the 105 armor factor is well suited for a Zombie, very nice. While well written as always I found the Star Adders to be an odd choice to design such an entry - if it had been the Steel Vipers you would have sold me. Still all things considered this is worthy of the bronze.

The Gila Monster was a late entry by Abele which I really liked. Our second quad entry is a very capable OmniMech designed by Steel Viper. I liked how initial power plants came from the Wyvern and Goliath Scorpion scientists taken as isorla were used in the fluff. Again 10 tons of pod space was high end for this contest combined nicely with a 105 armor factor. The 6/9 movement with a MASC for tactical boosts of 12 was pretty good as well. The name strangely enough detracts a wee bit from the design for me. In some ways it is cool because I could see this design having a tail like the Wyvern. I don’t know if it is too old Terran or what but hey second place isn’t that bad. That is now two Viper Zombie entries both of which are quads for Quicksilver.

Top marks go to the Gremlin which was designed by Abele for the Burrock Clan. You shouldn’t be that hard on yourself Abele, the fluff is pretty solid. I liked the basis on the Hermes and its more demonic visage, very Gremlin. This ties in with Clan ProtoMechs which will not be appearing in this AU other than failed prototypes. The 8.5 tons of pod space with 7/11 movement and a 96 armor factor all made for the best possible mix IMO. More importantly is the imagery you created and the idea of this able Light OmniMech nice job and congrats on being the first double medal winner, silver and gold!

Congrats to Abele! Hope to see everyone for the next contest which may not be a Zombie!!

The Adders use a lot of second-line BattleMechs in their second-line Clusters.  Heck, their Kappa Galaxy is comprised almost exclusively of second-line BattleMechs and Vehicles even though it serves as OpFor the the Clan's front-line Clusters for training!  As such, even though the Adders were (perhaps) not likely to use this 'Mech in front-line service, I could certainly see them producing it to replace old BattleMechs in their second-line forces.  And being able to sell off additional units to Clans like the Spirits, Scorpions, and Vipers was an added bonus; at least to me!

Water under the bridge, though.  I'll get you next time, my pretties!  You and your little dog, both!  Mu-hah-hah-hah-HAH-HAH!

Consider me Shocked! 1st and 2nd is a surprise. I literally threw the Gila Monster together in like 20 minutes after reading that there were no Steel Viper entries. It was a slapdash effort. The Gremlin was a surprise as well for the reasons I stated when I posted it. Now let's get to the next contest and see if I can continue this upward ticking trend.

personally I think the Super Wasp was brilliant in concept, and considering it was engineered for Garrison Duty, not front line combat.

I think that is a big problem with the judging.  everything is being judged based on a paradigm of being sent out into an open field to fight in a circle of equals rather then against the Inner Sphere.

OVERVIEW
   Khan Natasha Kerensky was faced with a glut of salvaged 120 Fusion Engines from combat in the InnerSphere. To make use of this isorla she directed Wolf Clan designers to develop a new thirty-ton BattleMech which drew on her extensive experience. Propelled by the Fourth Quicksilver Trail they presented an innovative garrison unit named the SuperWasp. While their OmniMech proposal did not measure up to the ilKhan’s criteria the Black Widow pushed the design forward. Wasting resources on such a “low quality third line” BattleMech drew the ire of Wolf Crusaders. Despite several Trails of Grievance the project moved ahead rapidly with the full support of the Warden leadership. As losers of these contests began their assignments with “police clusters” armed with Wasp IIC much of their Supremacist rhetoric has dried up.

CAPABILITIES
   Virtually everything on the Wasp IIC is refurbished in one way or another. Hundreds of 120 Fusion Engines from the Packrat Long Range Patrol Vehicle, the Stinger BattleMech, and the Wasp BattleMech were recovered from battlefields all across the Clan Occupation Zone. Likewise there were thousands of tons of armored plating that when combined with reclaimed jump jets and electronic systems taken from downed war machines created a veritable assembly line of parts. All that was needed was a new chassis that began in late 3052 at the W-7 Facilities above Tranquil. While expensive, designers opted to go with an EndoSteel structure to maximize protection and weaponry. While this larger thirty-ton frame slowed the BattleMech to its forerunner’s Cruising Speed at best it is far more durable. It seems that the Wolf Khans are content with slower second line equipment despite going with faster front line forces. Combined with its Clan armament and Double Heat Sinks all these different pieces have produced a formidable peacemaker for the Wolves.

DEPLOYMENT
   The plan is to stand up entire Clusters of the "SuperWasps" (three Mech Trinaries, a Trinary of Infantry, and a Trinary of Vehicles) at a time, to ensure Clan Wolf has its Occupation Zone gripped tightly. Only the rate of production of new EndoSteel chassis has limited this successful operation. The Wasp IIC even inspired LAM research by the Wolves on a limited basis.
   Clan Diamond Shark looking to rebuild quickly from their disaster at Tukayyid while augmenting their Touman has been buying up InnerSphere salvage at low prices from Invading Clans. Most were uninterested in utilizing these parts even after the Wolves were fielding Wasp IICs but not the Sharks. They moved quickly to copy Kerensky’s plan and are nearly finished building their own factory to crank out the SuperWasp chassis.
   Both Nova Cat and Coyote have followed at a somewhat slower pace with their own Wasp IICs. The Cats observing the Wolves and the Sharks are considering the creation of their own garrison units. Coyote on the other hand is bringing the Wasp IIC operations to the Clan Homeworlds teaming it with the UrbanMech IIC supplementing their own security forces.

VARIANTS
   A second variant that is heavily influenced by the Wolf Dragoons model of the Wasp is also popular. With three Medium Pulse Lasers and five Small Pulse Lasers this model, number 2, is often paired with the primary Wasp IIC for maximum effect. Model 3 is a pure fire support Mech armed with twin LRM-15s. Four tons of ammunition make this uncommon variant a valuable asset for garrison clusters. The rarest types of Wasp IICs are true second line fighters using 180 XL Engine from the Kit Fox to achieve 6/9 speed. The addition of Clan Ferro Fibrous allows the for two more Jump Jets and an Anti-Personnel Pod.

Ah went with the new production endo-steel chassis I see.


Still its a fun little Garrison unit that I'm sure will be used to put down rebels and the occasional raider alike.

Yup, the only thing that this 'Mech needed for production is a chassis. There are no existing models to take from unlike the other components which are all available and ready to go. So I figured making an EndoSteel frame is just as quick as making a Standard frame, so why not?

While the largest number of these 'Mechs will essentially be Security dedicated (third line machine) like the UrbanMech IIC and the Sentinel IIC, the Wasp IIC 4 can be a true second line fighter.
