Welcome to the seventh installment of the Clans united design effort that will fill out their OmniMech ranks. Today we jump squarely into the Medium weight class after six straight hard fought Light competitions. Since we had five canon choices that fit all three categories we are bumping up a full ten tons for this project. Ultimately Clan Wolf chose to discontinue the 40 ton Phantom while the Coyotl by Clan Coyote will remain a thing of the past. More relevant to our little contest here is the decision to decommission the 45 ton Mongrel (Grendel) made by Clan Diamond Shark.

Unfortunately for the Sharks and the Mongrel it fell squarely between the Ice Ferret (Fenris) produced by the Wolves which with its 8/12 movement will be considered the Werewolf (Speedster) of this class and the Shadow Cat made by Nova Cat with its 17 tons of pod space, Vampire (Assailant). The fact that the Mongrel debuted at the Battle of Tukayyid, which was a monumental failure for the Merchant Clan, likely played into this decision as well. Perhaps even more significant was the fact that this OmniMech had not entered full scale production (3053). This has bought forward another issue which is a big piece of the Quicksilver Program.

Per the ilKhan each Clan should be producing at least one OmniMech design to display a united front. Quicksilver has redirected facilities, streamlined logistics, and pooled resources precisely in order to maximize production. Now while some Clans just have a more developed industrial complex, better access to raw materials and deeper fiscal wherewithal the overall contribution will no doubt vary. That being said other Clans have specializations that may give them greater effect than their industrial potential. Smoke Jaguar we know is already running low on supplies but despite several set backs their powerful warrior mindset may augment their overall contribution much like Blood Spirit.

However at this point in time Diamond Shark and Goliath Scorpion produce not a single design for the Clans. My best guess at this point is we have anywhere from 10 to 12 designs still unaccounted for. Now the Sharks should produce at least a few I would think and the Scorpions at least one. To illustrate known production efforts thus far I have added the current industrial commitment [] of each Clan below. Keep in mind that with a total of 51 designs produced for the Quicksilver Program by 17 different Clans you come up with a total of 3 designs per Clan on average.

While you are picking a designing Clan keep in mind that another major point in the submission process, the name. The name of your entry is a big deal as more then one designer has found out. Accepted naming conventions for the Quicksilver Program include two major criteria from this point forward. Star League Standard English is a must at this point in Clan history for your presentation. They take great pride in their language and will not pollute it with contractions or foreign ‘Mech names. Also do not name your design after a Clan. I personally dislike the whole totem Mech idea and for the united Quicksilver Program such pomp pomps will be bounced by the ilKhan.

So your mission, if you should decide to accept it, is to design 45 ton Zombie OmniMech for the Quicksilver Program. No extra light engines on these low cost, easy to produce, take a beating on keep on ticking war machines. Since we have moved into the middle weight division the movement minimum has been lowered to 5/8. I realize speed is becoming harder and harder to come by these days so perhaps adding jump jets for increased mobility might be advantageous. That is just a recommendation but you see a lot of mediums sporting them. I also like to see use of existing material and methods that will increase survivability on the modern battlefield.

Now I also got to say that some Clans will still not consider designing or producing these OmniMechs. Zombies are frequently disparaged for their “low tech” power plants which are slower or take up too much mass. If forced to these Clans will relegate these machines to second or even third line service. Some Clans may possibly hold them in reserve as replacement for down equipment, training or testing gear, and even lesser roles. I’ll give you a possible angle since I was talking about Diamond Shark earlier. How about making a Zombie to sell it and finance continued rebuilding or better designs?

Whoever your designing Clan should be tell me how and why they are building. Please mention other Clans that assist in this design process or ones who challenge for possession of it. Of course the winning entry will be featured in my FedCom Forever universe which is outlined in my Clarion Call fanfic. Technical Readout 3059 is looking better and better every contest I must say thanks to these contests and the winners shall appear in this future fanbook. This work will not only follow the progression of Clan equipment in this alternate setting but the InnerSphere’s as well.

I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program like Heavy Metal Pro as it makes things easier on me.  :)  Ok here is my entry for the 45 ton weight class.. The Fire Grenadier

OVERVIEW

This is another omnimech design cooperation between the Clan's Blood Spirit, Goliath Scorpion and Diamond Sharks.  The Diamond Shark warrior-merchants always looking at making a profit at a low cost decided that R & D cost will be split 25/25/50 respectively.  By Clan Dimond Shark taking the more up-front cost in exchange for the exclusive manufacturing and trade rights to other clans.  The other two clan’s agreed to this condition since it can help them develop an omnimech.

If it is approved by the Ilkhan it will be built by Clan Blood Spirit and Goliath Scorpion.  Their factories will also supply Clan Diamond Shark with the mechs to trade to other Clan's.  The warrior merchants of Clan Diamond Shark will be the go to supplier for this mech. So any profit to be had will be earned by Clan Diamond Shark.

They based the Fire Grenadier on the old Star League mech design the Wyvern.  The communication and T&T System was Ice Ferret since this help keep development costs down. Endo-Steel and FF Armor was used to save weight.  The FF Armor gives it 100% coverage. And the plans for the Vox 225 fusion engine came from the design schematics of the ancient battlemech Kyudo.  Clan Dimond Shark made a short production run of these fusion engines to provide the powerpland for the Fire Grenadier.  MASC was added to give it a burst of speed when needed at combat and a targeting computer was included in all models.  This design gives it a 16.5 tons of pods space.

Three Star's worth of omnimechs were produced.  The first Star was sent to Strana Mechty for evaluation in Operation Quick Silver and the other two Star's was sent to Clan Blood Spirit and Goliath Scorpion units to evaluate its use and what tactics suit it.  The enemy forces its expecting to use is the dark caste bandit's.

CAPABILITIES

The base model is designed as a long range sniper with its pair of ER Lg lasers.  For up close it has a pair of ER med lasers and a pair of flamers for anti-infantry work.  An active probe was attached to help it in urban or wooded areas. An anti-missile system was added to help it defend from missile attacks.

Type A is designed as a long range fire support to recon stars.  An ER PPC was placed on the left arm paired with the targeting computer and an LRM 15 with Artemis IV was placed on the right arm with three tons of ammunition.  This was designed to support its Star mates. 

Type B is more of dedicated long range fire support and anti-aircraft with an LRM 15 with Artemis IV is placed in arms with two tons of ammunition and an ER Med laser is placed as back up weapons.  A flamer is placed in the head to provide it with a limited anti-infantry.

Type C is designed for up close combat.  It’s armed with one ER Med laser in each arm tied to a targeting computer and it’s outfitted with five SRM 6 rack with 6 tons of ammunition.  Some of the ammunition can be changed to inferno rounds.  This design was a tribute to the Clan's Commando IIC.  The warriors that are participating in the design process agreed that if used properly it can cause serious havoc on inner sphere forces.  Especially infantry and armor forces.

Type D has been designed with increased mobility.  Jump jets were added to give it a 120 meter distance capacity.  A Lg pulse laser and ER med laser is paired with the targeting computer and an SRM 4 in each arm with a ton of ammo only. The SRM can exploit any damage that the lasers would have caused.

Type Z is used for the Clan's Zellbringen warfare.  And its designed to fight at extreme long range.  It has a Ultra AC/2 paired with an ER Large laser.  An ER med laser was added as a secondary weapon. An AMS was added to help it protect it from LRM fire.


BATTLE HISTORY

   The warriors of Clan Blood Spirit have reportedly tested the mech on it bandit hunting missions and the feedback has been positive since its battlefield endurance has kept up with combating the Dark Caste Bandits.   The warriors of Clan Diamond Shark has so far only evaluated this mech against the 1st Cateran Cluster to see the diffent ways this mech can be used and what other variations they can come up with.

I will be posting a design . . . soon.  Working on the fluff now; it is (basically) the Silent Death Takiro referenced above, but without the advanced equipment developed after 3052-53.  Also, the name will be changed to protect the innocent.  (Well, to give it a more Clan-like designation, at least).

SAND DEVIL

Overview
The announcement of Project Quicksilver in 3052 left Clan Goliath Scorpion wondering whether or not they should participate.  Always short of resources, their existing Touman was outfitted with large numbers of standard BattleMechs (instead of cutting edge OmniMechs) and few BattleMechs or OmniMechs were produced by Clan Scientists.

Indeed, Khan Ariel Suvorov considered the competition to be a waste of time; however, that opinion was changed with a concerted by her saKhan (Nelson Elam) and the Clan's Master of Instruction (former Khan Nikolai Djerassi) to bring her onboard.  Already, the two argued, the Scorpions are considered to be a third-rate Clan.  If the Scorpions failed to submit a single OmniMech design that was then accepted for Project Quicksilver, the Clan would fall further behind and suffer ridicule and attacks from the other Clans.

Faced with the real possibility that her emphasis on overhauling the Scorpion aerospace assets could cost the Clan its very existence, Khan Suvorov relented.  Elam and Djerassi were assigned to oversee the development of a new Scorpion design that would serve the Clan (ALL of the Clans) well.

After examining the available choices for competition, the two decided upon the 45-ton Zombie slot.  The Scorpions already had a reputation for fielding lighter (slightly, at least) 'Mechs than other Clans and the two leaders quickly determined that the 45-ton slot would be the most effective for combining speed, armor protection, and weapon payload.

In May of 3052, Djerassi assigned the name Sand Devil to the future design and assembled a staff of Scientists and Warriors to see it through to completion.  This team proceeded deliberately, debating the merits of slower designs versus the reduced payload of faster, more mobile units.  But the consensus slowly settled on a unit able to walk at speeds of 64.8 kilometers per hour.  Any slower would be TOO slow, the Warriors argued, while faster speeds required too much weapons payload to be sacrificed.

But problems arose.  Clan Goliath Scorpion did not produce the 270 Standard Fusion Engines required for the design.  On the other hand, Clan Diamond Shark already had a plant designed to produce this engine for their Highlander IIC BattleMech . . . BattleMech Plant CM-T15 on Arcadia.  Another concern was that the newly completed SR-1 Facility on Roche might not be able to keep pace with demand if the Sand Devil won the competition . . . and the Scorpions lacked the capital resources necessary for expansion.  Not without further diluting Khan Suvorov's aerospace renaissance.

In order to circumvent both of these problems, Nikolai Djerassi travelled to Strana Mechty in person to meet privately with Khan Ian Hawker.  Over the course of two weeks, the men met and discussed the state of the Clans in general and Project Quicksilver in particular.  Furious at the ilKhan for killing the Mongrel project, Hawker was eager to put a new (and potentially profitable) OmniMech in production.  Although disdainful of the Warden and his decadent Scorpions, Hawker listened . . . and from these meetings he begrudgingly decided that the Scorpion design was reasonable and had a good chance of winning the coveted 45-ton slot.

Hawker agreed to supply the engines, but only if Clan Diamond Shark gained production rights to the design.  Little did he realize that Djerassi wanted this as well . . . and with that agreement, the deal was sealed.

One final problem remained.  To complete the Sand Devil in time, Scorpion scientists needed to use an existing chassis . . . and preferably existing communications, targeting, and fire control systems.  Two possibilities presented themselves:  the Ice Ferret produced by Clan Wolf and the Shadow Cat produced by Clan Nova Cat.

As the Shadow Cat was a new design, concerns over unforeseen glitches soon sidelined debate on using that chassis, leaving only the Clan Wolf Ice Ferret.  But the Scorpions did not have rights to produce (or duplicate) the chassis and systems.

On June 26, Star Captain Jillian Scott, a Scorpion ristar on detached duty in the Inner Sphere to observe and report on the Invasion and Occupation, appeared before Khans Natasha Kerensky and Phelan Kell on Tamar.  Citing orders from her Khan, Scott issued a Trial of Possession for the right to use the Ice Ferret chassis (including all motive and electronic systems) as the basis for a new Clan Goliath Scorpion OmniMech.

Impressed by the audacity of the Scorpions, Khan Kerensky accepted . . . and met Star Captain Scott on the field of battle herself.  The Scorpions lost that Trial and Scott was taken as abtakha by the Wolves.

Incensed at this 'betrayal' by their nominal allies, Khan Suvorov did the unthinkable . . . she sent Nikolai Djerassi to Hector and ordered him to convince the Hellions, by wit or battle, to provide the Scorpions with the needed schematics and rights to their original Wolf Hunter design (which Clan Wolf had turned into the Ice Ferret).

Although Clan Wolf had won the production rights to the Ice Ferret, the Hellions kept records and blue-prints and schematics even after they discontinued production.  Technically, they still had the right to produce the design . . . or to trade it.

Khan Stephen Tyler's first impulse was to reject the Scorpion proposal . . . but after he had a chance to consider, he began to realize just how irritated and incensed the Wolves would be when they realized that the Scorpions had secured the chassis and right to produce it . . . despite the Trial that Natasha Kerensky had just won.

On July 3, 3052, Khan Tyler traded the schematics and blue-prints for the original Wolf Hunter to Nikolai Djerassi . . . in exchange for a case containing one dozen bottles of 48-year aged Glengarry Reserve Scotch Whiskey.

With the plans secured, full-scale development of a prototype began.


Capabilities
The Sand Devil masses 45-tons and uses a 270 Standard Fusion Engine that provides sufficient power for a walking speed of 64.8 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 97.2 kph.  Design engineers used Endo-Steel II internal structure to save as much mass as possible for weapons payload, although they did outfit the OmniMech with 8.0 tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating (for 100% of the maximum possible protection available on a 45-ton chassis).

No fixed equipment was installed on the base chassis and only the ten base double-strength heat sinks mounted, maximizing available pod space at 14.0 tons.  Although two tons less than that available on the 35-ton Adder(an OmniMech ten tons lighter moving at the same speed), design engineers stressed that the Sand Devil (with its standard engine) was more rugged, carried far more armor protection, and consumed fewer resources to field and maintain.

All known configurations of the Sand Devil feature a Targeting Computer due to the Clan Goliath Scorpion designers desire to comply with Scorpion doctrine.

The Prime configuration is armed with an ER PPC in the right arm, an ER Medium Laser in the left arm, and (at the insistence of Clan Diamond Shark 'consultants') a Streak SRM-6 launcher with a ton of ammunition in the left torso.  Eleven DHS provide ample cooling ability, although there is a heat spike if the Streak locks onto a target and fires.  A two-ton Targeting Computer is located in the right torso.

Configuration A is armed with two ER Large Lasers (right arm and left arm) tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso.  Thirteen DHS allows for the Sand Devil A to remain heat neutral on a running Alpha strike.  There are two sub-configurations:  the A-1 uses the final ton to mount an Active Probe, while the A-2 instead carries an ECM Suite.  Both sub-configurations carry this piece of equipment in the center torso.

Configuration B provides the Scorpion Touman with air-defense capabilities.  The main weapon is an LB-5X autocannon in the right arm with two tons of ammunition.  This is supported by three ER Medium Lasers (center torso, left torso, and left arm).  All four guns are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso.  Although carrying only the base ten DHS, the Sand Devil B is cool-running.

Configuration C is designed for anti-infantry/battle armor duties.  Four ER Medium Lasers provide the bulk of the available firepower (mounted right arm, right torso, left torso, and left arm).  Two ER Small Lasers support these weapons at closer range (right torso and left torso).  The right arm carries a TAG system, while a center torso mounted Active Probe allows the Sand Devil C to located hostile infantry.  Four Machine-guns (two each right torso and left torso) with a half-ton of ammunition (left torso) provides AP capacity.  For additional defense, an Anti-Missile System is provided (left torso, with a ton of ammunition) and the lasers are tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer located in the right torso.  To support all of these weapons, thirteen DHS are provided.

The Sand Devil D carries fourteen DHS, but still generates movement heat on a full Alpha Strike.  The main gun is an ER Large Laser in the right arm.  Backing up this weapon are EIGHT ER Small Lasers, mounted in the left arm, center torso, and three each in the right and left torsos.  All weapons are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso.

Configuration E is a jump capable scout.  Six jump jets (three each right and left torso) are carried, allowing for jumps of up to 180 meters.  To support its recon role, the Sand Devil E is outfitted with an Active Probe (center torso), ECM Suite (left torso), and TAG (left arm).  Armament consists of an ER Large Laser (right arm) and a Streak SRM-4 (left torso) with a ton of ammunition.  Only the base 10 DHS are mounted, but these are only strained on a full jumping Alpha Strike.  A one-ton Targeting Computer is located in the right torso.

And the final configuration is the Sand Devil F.  Also fitted with six jump jets (three each right and left torso), this configuration is brutally simple:  four Medium Pulse Lasers (right arm, right torso, left arm, left torso) tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer (right torso).  Eleven DHS allows for the Sand Devil F to remain heat neutral even on a jumping Alpha Strike . . . and while relatively short-ranged, the lethal accuracy of this configuration cannot be overstated.


Battle History
Khan Tyler was correct in his assumption that the Wolves would have little taste or amusement for the manner in which Clan Goliath Scorpion bypassed the results of their Trial of Possession.  Immediately after receiving the first five prototypes in November of 3052, the ilKhan himself had to physically restrain Khan Kerensky from hopping aboard a JumpShip and travelling to Roche (in person!) to fight a Trial of Grievance against the Scorpions!

The design was almost rejected by the ilKhan when he announced that he was ". . . personally investigating the irregularities involved in the Scorpion acquisition and duplication of an OmniMech design to which Clan Wolf had sole legal rights."

But an unlikely coalition of Clan Wolf enemies came to the Scorpion's defense in this manner.  The Hellions, of course, refused to condone any such investigation and they insisted that they, indeed, had every legal right under the Martial Code to trade the design schematics.  The Sharks, who stood to profit, warned the ilKhan that he stood on dangerous ground . . . and both the Falcons and Jaguars, eager at ANY action which caused Clan Wolf to suffer in ANY manner, also stood in opposition.

In the end, the ilKhan gritted his teeth and allowed the Sand Devil to enter the competition . . . but the matter was far from settled.

Small Wolf units began to descend onto Scorpion holdings, determined to 'punish' the Clan for the actions of their leadership.  Only the skill and determination of Scorpion Warriors have so far managed to keep losses at an acceptable level.  Unfortunately, the feud between the two Clans has shown no sign of abating; on the contrary it is threatening to escalate even further if the Sand Devil wins the coveted Quicksilver slot.


Additional
The new Clan Goliath Scorpion OmniMech was named after the fearsome Sand Devil of Roche . . . a massive (350 kilogram, on average) insect that closely resembles the Ant Lion of Terra (although far, far larger in scale).  Rare even in the desert wastes of Roche, the Sand Devil uses its mandibles to dig out steep sided pits from the loose sand and rubble of the wastes, then buries itself at the bottom.

When creatures come upon the pit, they begin to slide down, the sides collapsing and causing them to fall . . . and when they reach the bottom, the Sand Devil is lying in wait.  Seizing the prey with its bone mandibles (which ratchet down and lock into place), the insect then injects it proboscis into the victim and starts draining blood and other vital fluids.  The strength of the mandibles is truly amazing and have been known to penetrate Elemental battle armor on at least three occasions.  Once the mandibles lock into place, the Sand Devil does not release its prey until its victim is dead.  Even after the death of the insect, the mandibles remain locked and must be broken to free the victim.

An ambush hunter par excellence, the Sand Devil is honored for its ability to alter its environment to suit its own strengths and deprive its prey of theirs.  As such, Khan Suvorov selected the name for the Scorpions entry in Project Quicksilver 45-Z.

5/8 movement curve is nice, so I will see what I can do. But I'm losing interest in doing nothing but Zombies as engines take up a bunch of weight and going over the minmum movement is really going to cut into pod space. I've got a couple of designs already in the chute, so I will have to make a choice and then write credible fluff, which is also getting challenging.

The Way Seeker was developed by Clan Goliath Scorpion as an inexpensive omnimech that could be distributed to it's seekers as they traverse the inner sphere.  to that end the Icepick was made with ease of repair first in mind.  The Base Chassis was made with 100% modular components able to accept transplanted members from mechs up to 20 tons lighter of 50 tons heavier, from off the shelf materiels.  armor connection points were created specifically to accept Starshield, Durralex, or StarGuard armor plating.  Speed was not a concern for this machine, rather the comforts of the long march were much more important.  Time and again the Clan's foray into the Inner Sphere proved that superoir technology could only go so far, and that out pacing the militaries of the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth and DCMS only closed range faster allowing the foes enemies of the clans a chance to strike.  Most impressively, the Cockpit module is of inner sphere design, fixing a long standing problem of clan cockpits being the same mass and fewer amenities.    the aft compartment of the Cockpit holds a pantry locker, fold up lavatory and just enough space for a hammock in a space 2 meters wide, two meters tall and 1 meter deep.

The Primary Configuration of the Way Seeker is geared towards extended operations away from support.  the paired large pulse lasers provide extreme coverage.  a quartet of medium lasers excellent backup firepower, though an alpha strike will overtax the heat sinks.  pilots must learn to focus on long or short ranged weapons.  Jump Jets provide additional maneuverability and a Flamer gives the pilots strategic utility, anti infantry firepower and survival

Geared more towards traditional battlefield support, the Alpha, heavy LRM Launchers and respectable ammunition bins provide long range bombardment.  given the Way Seekeris designed for individual warriors Artemis Fire Control is slaved to the Missiles rather then more reliable TAG or NARC, which requires teamwork.

Alternate B is a picket Mech.  a powerful Gauss Rifle and Extended range laser give the B Maximum range and interdiction, allowing the machine to make up for it's slow speed by keeping enemy forces under threat for ten to twenty seconds longer then typical.  rounding out it's capabilities is an AMS provides protection from first strike and a Beagle Probe prevents that first strike from being a surprised.

Alternate C is designed to destroy opposition and act as a bodyguard to strategic assets.  an ERPPC provides reach while a massive 210 mm dual purpose cannon pulverizes opposition.  the nature of the Way Seeker's arms also allows the Cannon to act as an improvised anti aircraft gun, decimating low flying aerofighters as though it were a battery of Rifleman.

Alternate Configuration D is meant for close range combat.  A Battery of even medium lasers provided enough power to vaporize a a dwelling and devastate entire Elemental points and mechs.  a targeting computer allows ten of those lasers to be placed on a single point of a target.

the Final Configuration, Alternate E, is designed for Multi-Threat combat.  4 Medium lasers long the standard of main firepower for Battlemechs, mount in pods on the arms.  an over under assembly of Long and Short Range Missiles provide variable threat targeting to conventional assest and Battle armor.  the Right arm sports a 25mm ultra autocannon for extended range harassment and anti armor capabilities.

Overview:
Clan Coyote has always favoured firepower in their designs. When they learned
the ilKhan had approved the - in their view - undergunned Shadow Cat as the
primary firepower platform for the 45 ton bracket Khan Koga protested fiercely.
The limited influence of a Home Warden Clan left the Coyotes unable to amass
the votes to overturn the decision.

When working to provide a candidate for the 'zombie' category, the Coyote
Scientists therefore had a second set of objectives: leave the Nova Cat design
clearly out-gunned.


Capabilities:
In order to compete for pod-space as well as protection, the Knave had to use
the smallest fusion engine possible while still meeting the criteria of the
contest. The 225 VOX was fortunately available from two sources: cached Von
Luckner tanks and the Coyote's remaining Great Wyrm battlemechs. Some thought
was given to basing the chassis off the Great Wyrm but in the end the
Scientists went with a design based on the original Blackjack submitted by GM
to the SLDF centuries before, which offered more flexibility in pod-space.
(Interestingly, the Inner Sphere seem to have drawn the same conclusion with
their work on an Omni-Blackjack).

The primary configuration of the Knave pairs large and medium extended range
lasers, all controlled by an advanced targeting computer. Electronic
counter-measures add to security and jump-jets let the Prime make optimal use
of terrain.

The A configuration keeps the jumpjets but uses an array of small and medium
lasers to deploy short-range salvos. This design is favoured for close terrain
and the flamers ward off hostile infantry.

As with many OmniMechs, the B configuration is for fire support, with four LRM
racks and a moderate quantity of ammunition. Less specialised, the C
configuration has the reach of a Gauss Rifle but at close quarters can rely on
small and medium lasers, not unlike the A.

Given the array of tanks and other vehicles deployed by the Inner Sphere, the
Scientists fitted the D configuration with a LB-X autocannon. Excellent for
exploiting armour breaches created by the PPC, the autocannon is also highly
effective at damaging tank tracks, hover-fans and turret rings. In simulations
the Knave D can often disable vehicles quickly before backing out of their
range and finishing them with its PPC.

Sabre Kraken



Seizing the opportunity to spur on innovation and burn Warriors resources doing it! a rather more than half baked Society Scientist lurking inside Clan Diamond Shark, a one Dr. W Wily used the Quicksilver program to push her personal hobby horse and personal holy grail, Tripod based Mech designs.

Dr Wily burned through dozens of favors and the despicable, disgusting and down right dirty actions she took to ensure her Mech design went ahead would create a TriVid that even the most jaded Canopian Porn Producer would go "Too far.  Way too far.   .......   The animal rights people would have our heads if I dared film this master piece of deviance."

What resulted was a unique designs named after a very vicious aquatic predator from Circe, the Sabre Kraken, a genetically modified beast introduced by an unknown Star League Scientist shortly after the SLDF in Exile landed on the Pentagon Worlds.     Why a three meter long kraken with a beak fully capable of slicing through Mech Armor and a taste for human flesh was a necessary addition to Circe's ecology no one knows.     Thankfully extremely rare the Sabre Kraken is hunted without mercy by the Labor Castes due to its succulent apple wood smoked bacon flavored flesh. 

Dr Wily's unveiling of the Sabre Kraken resulted in her scheduled execution by her fellow Scientists Academic Discourse among the Society tends to involve high powered lasers, a fate Khan Hawker has stayed pending the results of the iL Khans decision.   After all Victory counts for all.

Development

More rationally the Sabre Kraken is based around the VOX 225 Engine used by the Von Luckner Tank, a full Cluster's worth that had been gathering dust in the Diamond Sharks warehouses.  With a walking speed of over 50 km/h Dr Wily added in 5 additional fixed jumpjets to further aid the Sabre Kraken exploit the battlefield.     

To provide this unusual Mech with additional capabilities Active Probes and ECM were installed as fixed equipment to hunt hidden enemy units and degrade enemy fire.

A full covering of 8.5 tons of Ferro Fiberous armor covered the unique Endo Steel frame of the Sabre Kraken.

Additionally a Full Head Ejection System was added, both to prove Dr Wily could replicate the Inner Sphere design, and to avoid bothering to design an ejection system.


More importantly for the Sabre Kraken was the arms of this unusual mech.   Extremely flexible they enable both forward and rear firing and have been described by many as "Creepy, very creepy".

The Prime Variant takes full advantage of this by placing a Large Pulse Laser in each arm, and an AMS unit with a full ton of ammo in the right torso.

Alpha Variant with an UAC 5 and 4 ER Medium Lasers has a real 'One Two Punch' for both distance and in close attacks.

Beta Variant places and ER LL and ER ML in each arm along with additional heat sinks for solid skirmisher.

Gamma Variant is a fire support mech with LRM15's in each arm and two tons of ammo each, backed up by a pair of ER ML in the right and left Torso's.

Delta is a vicious In fighter with 2 Medium Pulse Lasers in each arm backed up with a SRM6 in each torso feed from a ton of ammo apiece.

I'm in, I thought I was onto something different until I saw JPArbiter's Icepick... why couldn't I have finished early this morning.  Slightly different though since I've got a little more movement options.  The fluff is a little sparse but I think the configurations speak for themselves.

Overview

The Trickster has been in development for ten years.  A brain child of Clan
Coyote it only really became reality with Clan Blood Spirit's input - strange
bedfellows for a strange Mech.


Capabilities

The Trickster is unique among Clan OmniMechs where it takes the "development
triangle" and turns it on its head.  Instead of picking the logical "Speed" and
"Weapons" options this Mech goes for armour and weapons creating the
slowest Medium OmniMech in Clan history.  Although this is balanced
 with MASC and Jump Jets among its pears it is a Mech that some
think should have been 20 tons heavier.  This design choice was at the
insistence of the Blood Spirit advisers who pointed out to their Coyote
partners that they did not have to do everything the Wolves demanded
even if that Wolf was the ilKhan.

This Trickster's lack of speed is made up with its massive weapons bays. 
Based around four traditional defence BattleMechs the Trickster takes
elements from the Vulcan, UrbanMech, Catapult and Hunchback and
creates a Clan MechWarrior's nightmare or dream.  For commanders
however this Mech is perfect for holding territory or for making
MechWarriors prove that it is their skill and not the Mech that makes
them the Warrior.

Unable to outrun most heavy designs the MechWarrior needs to fight
and win every battle or die trying making this the perfect Trial Mech. 
With large autocannons, particle cannons and Long Range Missile
racks the norm on this Mech when normally they are a rarity on this
size of design.

Battle History

So far this Mech has only seen battles in Trials of Position of Clans
Coyote and Blood Spirit.  Its strange capabilities have so far kept
other Clans at arms length.

In the trials it has taken part in the Mech has proven that it can
match and destroy Mechs 10-15 tons heavier in it in one-on-one
engagements.

Deployment

This Mech is deployed so far exclusively by Clan Coyote and
Blood Spirit.  Although it has seen some front-line use the
Trickster's primary positions in these Clans have been as
command Mechs for Garrison Clusters.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

The Sabre Kraken is plain whacky and while I like it cause it is so far outside the norm - it will not even qualify for the contest given its highly Level 3 nature. Sorry fitz, I'll give it an evaluation but tripods ain't sniffing this challenge.

JP and Dragon Cat both your submissions are slower than criteria - something that should be recognized in your fluff. Dragon Cat is comes the closest to justifying his decision in the fluff thus far. Give me a "yeah we know the ilKhan said but we think this is better" yada yada..... please. Thank you!

5/8 movement curve is nice, so I will see what I can do. But I'm losing interest in doing nothing but Zombies as engines take up a bunch of weight and going over the minmum movement is really going to cut into pod space. I've got a couple of designs already in the chute, so I will have to make a choice and then write credible fluff, which is also getting challenging.

How about a Quad?  On 5/8/0 with 8.5 tons of FF armor, you would have 18 tons of pod space and 19 critical slots remaining.  5/8(16)/0 would put you at 16 tons and 17 slots, while 5/8/5 would be 15.5 tons and 14 slots. At 6/9/0 with the same armor, you would have 13.5 tons pod space left over and 21 free critical slots.

All of those are still available and have not yet been done, and such a 'Mech could have 20 points on the side torsos and 21 on the center torso, front legs, AND rear legs (although, the rear torsos would be rather weak).

Just saying, man.

True enough.  But governing seventeen Clans (and getting them ALL on the same page, at the same time, for the same purpose) must be like herding cats.  It wouldn't be the Clans if we didn't see SOME Scientists/Warriors/Khans saying . . ., "Ulric doesn't know what he is talking about.  So what if it doesn't meet his parameters?  THIS design is what we (Cats, Falcons, Jaguars, 'Yotes, etc., take your pick) NEED."

Personally, I don't have a problem with JP or DC dropping down to a 4/6/x movement curve . . . and I think it adds a bit of spice because they were able to get 20+ tons of pod-space in; which any Clan Warrior (or leader) HAS to respect.

On the Sabre Kraken . . . a tripod?  I WAS NOT expecting that.  Sure it is way out in left field, and perhaps Fitz might consider redoing it as a Quad, but it also exemplifies the disparate, cut-your-neighbor's-throat Clan competitiveness.    Of course, if it FAILS, then the Scientist responsible will probably be (to quote Ray about the Vigo the Carpathian) . . . "stabbed, shot, hung, stretched, disemboweled, and then drawn and quartered."

Yeah the Sabre Kraken definitely gets the outside the box award but looking at the design itself she looks like a biped. Where are the significant differences between a tripod and bipedal models? Did you design it as a normal mech and just say it is a tripod? ?

True dat Master A, getting the Clans on the same page is difficult at best. I also noticed before you commented that about the un Clan like nature of your potential entry. Care to elaborate?

Well, it is a matter of perception and degrees.  The Scorps fought a Trial with Clan Wolf and lost.  Okay, we all know that they CANNOT used the Ice Ferret chassis and electronics because Clan Wolf owns them.  BUT, then they went to Clan Ice Hellion and got the design anyway. 

This is where it gets sticky.  You see, when the Hellions developed the Wolf Hunter, specifically to combat Clan Wolf!  But the Hellions choose poorly on weapon configurations and Clan Wolf got fed up.  They launched attacks and eventually won a series of Trials that resulted in ALL Wolf Hunter production facilities being in their possession.  To their minds, the Hellions lost all of their rights.  But despite not being able to BUILD any more, the Hellions never (technically) fought a Trial against the Wolves which would have forced them to give up FUTURE production rights to the design.

The Wolves never considered that, as the Hellions turned away from the newly renamed Ice Ferret to other designs.  For all intents and purposes, the OmniMech was now the possession of Clan Wolf, lock-stock-and-barrel.  All of this taking place some 40-50 years ago (8-10 GENERATIONS of Clan Warriors!).

From the Wolf point-of-view, the treacherous Hellions had NO RIGHT to trade the design schematics because they WON the production facilities.  Which means the Scorpions are illegally using the CLAN WOLF design, after LOSING a Trial of Possession for it.  THAT is what the Wolves consider "unClan-like" about the Scorpion behavior.

But, from the point-of-view of everyone ELSE, technically, the Hellions did retain the rights to the design.  And are free to share it with anyone they wish as the result of a trade or a Trial.  It is just that no one had ever BOTHERED to do so.  Plus, even if it WERE illegal in nature, there are Clans out there that would support the Scorpion/Hellion position just to "stick it" to Clan Wolf!  And take the ilKhan down a peg or two.

Basically, it is all a bloody mess with tempers running high on all sides and the (tacit) approval of the ilKhan to Wolf stars and Trinary formations exacting revenge on Scorpion holdings for their "perfidy."

Perception, Clan law, and hurt feelings all around . . . not a good combination, eh?
