Quicksilver Program #9: 60 ton Werewolf (Speedster) OmniMech

Well folks we made it into the Heavies and things are about to get a lot more interesting with the 60 ton weight class. Right now there is only one 60 ton OmniMech in production by the Clans, the Mad Dog (Vulture). This Smoke Jaguar creation, which is a favorite of the Ghost Bears, was introduced in 2963. Its 300XL produces a respectable 5/8 movement rate and features 28 tons of pod space. Many of its configurations establish it as a missile boat or a long range support platform. Eight and a half tons of ferro fibrous (163 armor factor) does not give the best protection (201 would be the max).

Now our next contest will address the only other 60 ton OmniMech in the Clan arsenal which may soon return to full production. The Lupus which eventually inspired the Mad Dog was originally introduced in 2857. The second Omni ever built by the Coyotes could make a return under the Quicksilver Program as the Zombie for this weight class. While it has a standard 300 fusion it can move 5/8 just like its successor and is pretty high tech with EndoSteel structure. 9 tons of Ferro Fibrous (172 Armor Factor) are actually a little better than the Mad Dog. 23 tons of pod space is not all that bad.

Now it is time for the third generation of 60 ton Clan OmniMechs to be designed. This one is a Werewolf (Speedster) capable of 6/9 movement. Producing such a high speed machine might prove limiting but I still think there is a variety of ways it could be accomplished. Remember the design process should be expedited so basing your entry on existing models or utilizing equipment already in production helps. Spare no expense however as this design should be the top of the line in 3052, cutting edge.

Who could pull off such a design? Well I have updated the list of primary manufacturers again and we are running out of candidates. With the Smoke Jaguars, Jade Falcons, and Wolves already maxed out there are only a few who could afford such research and development. The best choices are likely the Hell’s Horses, Ghost Bears, Star Adders, and perhaps the Ice Hellions. All those Clans are committed to the high combat speed philosophy for their Toumans and have the resources to do so. I would also include Diamond Shark and Coyote as outside chances to build this new machine but I am hard pressed to see any other.

While you are picking a designing Clan keep in mind that another major point in the submission process, the name. The name of your entry is a big deal as more then one designer has found out. Accepted naming conventions for the Quicksilver Program include two major criteria from this point forward. Star League Standard English is a must at this point in Clan history for your presentation. They take great pride in their language and will not pollute it with contractions or foreign ‘Mech names. Also do not name your design after a Clan. I personally dislike the whole totem Mech idea and for the united Quicksilver Program such pomp pomps will be bounced by the ilKhan.

Of course the winning entry will be featured in my FedCom Forever universe which is outlined in my Clarion Call fanfic. BTW, Coyote has successfully petitioned Wolf for the manufacturing rights to the Woodsman and along with the Lupus will be restarting production of those designs unless suitable replacements can be found. Lately I have been considering a Technical Readout 3054: Quicksilver Program which will feature all the contest winners and tell us about the Clans of this alternate universe following Tukayyid. What do you think? With every contest we get closer and closer to a finished product.

I still prefer that entries are presented in some kind of design program like Heavy Metal Pro as it makes things easier on me. Boreal Wildcat

Overview
Originating in the ilKhan's PROJECT QUICKSILVER, the Boreal Wildcat was born through a most unusual alliance of two Clans and espionage from a third:  Hell's Horses and the Ice Hellions were the primary Clans behind the development of this OmniMech, but without the aid and criminal activities of Warrior Janos of Clan Goliath Scorpion (current whereabouts unknown with a reward offered for his capture . . . dead or alive) the OmniMech might well have been still-born.

Warror Janos was attached as a liaison to Clan Wolf and assigned to a development team working on Khan Phelan Ward's new LINEBACKER heavy OmniMech.  As tensions rose between the Clans competing in PROJECT QUICKSILVER, Janos found himself in the rather unenviable position of being shut out from his duties and shunned by Clan Wolf Warriors.  After the Goliath Scorpion/Diamond Shark Sand Devil design won the competition for the coveted 45-ton Zombie slot, Janos was ordered to return home to Roche.

He did . . . but only after downloading the entire work history of the Linebacker development program.  Regrettably, his criminal act was discovered only after his JumpShip had departed from Strana Mechty . . . and Janos never arrived at Roche where an arrest order from the ilKhan himself was waiting.

Knowing of the Hellion propensity for speed, Janos made his way to Hector and gave Khan Tyler the (illegal) downloads before vanishing once again (it should be said that Khan Tyler denies this completely, but given the resemblance between the Linebacker and the resulting Boreal Wildcat few believe him).

Already determined to win this VERY coveted Werewolf slot for his Clan, Tyler reached out to Khan Malavai Fletcher of Clan Hell's Horses and offered a partnership to develop the newly christened Boreal Wildcat.

Hellion and Horse Scientists and Warriors swear that any resemblance to the Clan Wolf OmniMech is entirely serendipitous in nature, but few in the Clans believe that.  The engineers reduced the mass of their design by five tons, resulting in better (overall) protection and more pod-space, for a lower price-tag.

Meanwhile, Clan Wolf is utterly furious and has demanded that Khan Suvorov hand over Warrior Janos or "face the consequences of harboring a fugitive."  To which she has publically replied . . . "Bring it, you flea-ridden free-birth progeny of sex workers."

Which has NOT helped to ease the rapidly escalating tensions and agitation in the Homeworlds.

In the meantime, the Horses are trying to avoid conflict with Clan Wolf (and many Horse Warriors blame Tyler for failing to tell them exactly HOW he acquired the data that their scientists used to develop the Boreal Wildcat).  But with the OmniMech ready for production, the Horse Khans realize that it would be foolish of them to simply put aside the design which so nicely would fit within their fast-moving Touman.

Capabilities
The Boreal Wildcat masses 60 tons and uses a 360-rate Extra-Light engine to allow for a walking speed of 64.8 kilometers per hour and a running speed of 97.2 kph.  Design engineers also added a two-ton MASC system that can boost this OmniMech to speeds of 129.6 kph for limited periods of time.  Production time was cut by using rebuilt (to current Clan standards, mind) 360XL fusion engines taken from old SLDF Lancelot BattleMechs.  The base chassis was also designed using the existing Lancelot frames as a guide, suitably modified for the use of Omni-pods, which further reduced development time and allowed the Horses and Hellions to construct a prototype within just ten months of starting the project.

The design also features Endo-Steel II internal structure and 10.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor plating . . . 100% of the maximum possible on a 60-ton biped 'Mech.  Only the base ten double-strength heat sinks are fitted to the design, leaving 21.0 tons of pod-space available.

The Prime carries two ER PPC (right arm and left arm), backed up by a Streak SRM-4 in the right torso with a ton of ammunition.  Six additional DHS allows the Boreal Wildcat to run and gun all day long with the big guns; adding the SRMs WILL generate excess heat . . . but only a minor amount.  This was deemed acceptable.

Configuration A has just three weapons:  two ER Large Lasers (right arm and left arm) and an LRM-20 with Artemis IV in the right torso with three tons of ammo (18 salvoes). Four DHS isn't quite enough to allow for zero net excess heat build-up, but is still within the limits that Warriors should be able to deal with.

Configuration B has a main gun consisting of a Gauss Rifle in the right arm . . . with a massive FOUR tons of ammunition (32 shots!).  Backing up the GR are four ER Medium Lasers.  Eleven DHS eliminates all but movement heat on a run, which is quite excellent.

Configuration C is split into two sub-configs:  C1 and C2.  Both are armed with a Large Pulse Laser (right arm), ER Medium Laser (right torso), two Machine-Guns (right torso), and an Active Probe.  The C1 carries an Ultra AC-10 with two tons of ammo in the left arm, while the C2 is outfitted with an LB-10X with two tons of ammo in the left arm.  Just the 10 standard DHS are fitted, but on the Boreal Wildcat that is enough.  (C1 is heat-neutral--20 vs. 20--on single shot mode; C2 generated 19 heat and dissipates 20.)

The D model is armed with four Streak SRM-6 launchers (two each in the right and left arms) fed by two tons of ammo (30 total flights of missiles) with secondary guns consisting of two Medium Pulse (right and left torso) and two Small Pulse (right and left torso) Lasers.  Eleven DHS means this variant overheats pretty well if all four Streaks lock onto target and the Warrior fires all four of the Lasers, but in practice it is able to balance the heat load nicely (30 generated with all four Streaks locked vs. 22 sinked).

Configuration E is the obligatory heavy scout.  This version carries six jump jets, an Active Probe (head), an ECM Suite (right torso), a two-ton Targeting Computer (right torso), a TAG (right arm), a ER Large Laser (right arm), two ER Medium Lasers (left arm), and a pair of Flamers (left torso).  Thirteen DHS can be overwhelmed on a jumping alpha strike . . . if the Warrior shoots everything including the twin Flamers.  But without the Flamers, this version can jump and gun for minimal overheat (34 max heat--28 w/o Flamers--vs 26 points of
cooling).

Last, but not least, the Boreal Wildcat F is the artillery model.  A 6/9 artillery OmniMech carrying an Arrow IV and twenty artillery rockets!  Plus, four ER Medium Lasers for self-defense and eleven DHS, so it can run and gun at will with the lasers while it gets into position to unleash Steel Rain on the Clan's foes!

It should be noted that design engineers omitted the lower arm and hand actuators from both arms in all configurations.  This allows every configuration (except the Artillery Configuration F) to 'flip' their arms and engage targets behind the Boreal Wildcat.

Additional
Named after a species of genetically altered big cats native to the arctic regions of Strana Mechty, the Boreal Wildcat honors that predator who competes with the impressive Ghost Bear for prey in the harsh northern wilderness.

Despite their name, Boreal Wildcats are not small.  The original stock was based on Asian Snow Leopards from Terra (one of the largest and most powerful big cats of old Earth) and the slight genetic modifications did not make the species any smaller.  However, they did transform the solitary predators into a pack society that works together in the harsh frozen landscape to feed their
cubs, nursing mothers, and elders.

With their superb hearing and vision, Boreal Wildcats are able to sense Ghost Bears hidden in ambush and avoid them . . . packs will relocate to avoid conflict with that exceptionally dangerous competitor whenever possible.  But while the Ghost Bear strikes form ambush on the snowy plains, the preferred territory of the Boreal Wildcats is the arctic Taiga . . . the perpetually frozen forests of pine and other evergreens that crowd the shoulders of the numerous northern mountain chains.

Their white and grey spotted fur allows these cats to blend into their surroundings as they quietly stalk and surround their prey before one of their number attacks and stampedes the local wildlife into the claws and fangs of pack-members waiting amongst the ice-laden pines.

Downed prey is dragged back to the lair, usually a cave with a ready source of water where the pack devours it . . . with the Alpha male partaking first, followed by nursing females, then the rest of the pack down to juveniles just weaned from their mothers.

Very rarely encountered, the Boreal Wildcat avoids man as much as possible and it is nearly as difficult to get a photograph or video of one as the elusive Mist Lynx.  However, it should be noted the cats are extremely territorial and any intruder who ventures close to their lair (be it a human or a Ghost Bear) is almost certain to come under attack from the six to fourteen adult members of the pack.

Few manage to survive such an encounter with an entire pack.

Because of this, Boreal Wildcat pelts are highly coveted by high ranking Warriors (and some Scientists) of the Clans.  Their beauty (and the danger associated with harvesting them) as well as their rarity mark the owner of such as a very dangerous (or highly influential) member of Clan society.

Clan Hells Horses is known for being able to adapt tactically to any given situation.  where most clans may dismiss an asset, they see opportunity.  this can be seen nowhere better then thier heavy use of conventional armor and rotary wing aircraft in their Touman.  when the call came out for a heavy omnimech with high speed capabilities, they saw the opportunity to create a mech not for combat glory, but for targeted killing and battlefield disruption.  Basing thier Omnimech on the last word in battlefield interdiction and elimination, the Exterminator, the Kidon (taking from an old Hebrew word for the tip of the spear) is built in every configuration to bring chaos and confusion to the enemies of the clans.

the Kidon is built around a spared no expenses attitude, with endo steel internal structure, Ferro Fibrous armor and a massive 360 rated XL Engine. nine and a half tons of Ferro Fibrous armor protect the Kidon, and is centered around the ability to withstand a direct hit from an Arrow IV homing Missile, Long Tom projectile, or Assault Grade Autocannon.  special care was paid to rear armor coverage as well, which can protect against clan grade medium lasers, giving the pilot some confidence to turn their back on their foe for a full retreat.  MASC Circuitry adds to mobility, permitting the Kidon to move at speeds that are considered absolutely staggering for a mech it's size (addendum: Reports from Clan Smoke Jaguar about upgraded Dragon Battlemechs seems to have beaten the Warriors of Kerensky to the punch)

the Primary Configuration apes the classic Exterminator almost to a Tee.  a quartet of medium pulse lasers are tied to a targeting computer for maximum accuracy.  though using pulse weapons to hit pinpoint locations has proven difficult, the garuntee of hits permits a mechwarrior to operate at high speed or jump and be able to keep up the pace.  An LRM 10 rack provides self cover fire while the Kidon moves into effective range, and a Flamer acts as a strategic weapon for covering withdraws.

Alternate Configuration A was designed to be a replacement for the Bowman that has served the Horses well for nearly a century.  a single Arrow IV missile dominates the right side of the Kidon A, and four tons of missiles feed the weapon.  for back up firepower a long reaching large laser permits the Kidon A to keep it's foes at arms length.

the Kidon B is designed to work in tandem with the Kidon A.  offical documentation places "independent Artillery Strike stars" as two Bs spotting for three As.  to aide the B in it's task, a full electronics suite is installed including TAG in the well protected head. and jump jets permit mobility where raw speed can not suffice. twin streak SRM 6 packs and a battery of medium and small lasers permit the Kidon B to defend itself, particularly against Pickets and Elementals.  the use of Streak Missiles also permit the B to perform Coup de Gras style attacks on targets ravaged by thier cousins, tearing apart Arrow IV ravaged targets.

Alternate configuration C Emulates another Star League Classic, and in fact one of the most Enduring Battlemech designs of all time, the Archer.  Thogh compared to the Mad Dog Omnimech, Scientist Karl pointed out that most Mad Dog Primes had to retire before their targets were destroyed due to low ammunition in their Prime models.  a Kidon C could not only outmaneuver a Vulture Prime, but keep the Missile fire rate up much longer. the Rear Facing Medium Pulse Lasers were another scoffed at addition.  While Scientist Karl pointed out that Pulse lasers had a better chance of hitting rear facing targets, later examination of his notes showed he too disapproved of this equipment, and was apparently added as a play towards the Traditional Archer Paradigm.  this seemed to please Adder, Cobra, and Viper Khans when shown it however.

The D Configuration is designed to tackle the toughest of targets.  using a Supercharger on top of the MASC allows the Kidon to reach absolutly blinding speeds.  once again harkening back to the Exterminator, this time the elite strike version created by Clan Mongoose for Operation Klondike, six medium lasers and a single large laser are tied to a targeting system, and as much remaining space has been used for heat sinks as possible.

an out of canon addendum, I REALLY like the "Jewifacation" that has been going on with Clan Hells Horses circa 3085 (at least in terms of military assets), and the name Kidon is a flagrant attempt to show a seed of that cultural shift.

Overview:
The Hellfury was the product of Khan Cassius N'Buta's desire for a fast medium
design to submit to the Quicksilver programme. With the Clan Council generally
unfavorably inclined the result was a resource-strapped project that ultimately
edged into the heavy categories.

The decision to build the Hellfury at 60 tons was based on two factors: the 360
extra-light engines now available as a byproduct of the development of a new
90-ton omni-mech (later the Blood Asp) and the discovery of over a hundred
retired Lupus Omni-Mechs in caches. Stripping the Lupus 'Mechs back to the
chassis and fitting the engines gave the Scientists the core of their new
'Mech.

Fierce competition with the Blood Asp team for resources was overall a problem
for the Hellfury project: although they were able to gain access to armour and
electronics for their own design, several key scientists were lost in Trials of
Possession and all three test-pilots were killed fighting the Trials. With only
weeks to go, Khan N'Buta personally devoted time to test the new Omni-Mech and
gave special dispensation to his sibkin, Technician Brutus, to pilot the
Hellfury's second prototype on gunnery ranges. The close resemblance between
the two men left this unnoticed until testing was complete.

The compatibility with the original Lupus, which may be revived as the zombie
60-tonner for the Quicksilver program may allow benefits in parts commonality,
although it could also leave the two designs competing for parts.


Capabilities:
With the powerful engine and advanced myomer signal circutiry, the Hellfury can
sprint a full fifty percent faster than its precursor design. Although carrying
slightly less protection than the Lupus, this protection has been repositioned
around the vital systems of the torso. This can leave arm-mounted weapons more
vulnerable than might be desired.

The first three configurations were copied directly from the Lupus (which
fortunately had the exact same tonnage available, and similar pod-space). The
primary configuration is a classic LRM platform reminiscent of the Archer and
many other designs, augmented with jumpjets and far more advanced electronics.

Alpha configuration uses a more balanced weapon payload, with an ultra-class
autocannon in one arm and a large pulse laser in the other. Finally the Beta
configuration moved directly to close combat preference with a large-bore
autocannon and an array of lasers.

Gamma configuration is the only original weapon-load, developed to allow for
extended operations that don't allow re-supply. The Clan PPC in the left arm
and the pulse lasers in the torso allow considerable sustained firepower with
the jump jets reducing most terrain to a minor consideration.


Battle History:
The Hellfury has seen action only once: Khan Robin Steele of Clan Coyote
committed a Trinary to capture the revision of a 'Mech they still considered
their own. The prospect of capturing Khan N'Buta would also have been a notable
coup.

In the event, the batchall was issued while Khan N'Buta wasn't at the weapon
range (returning to Strana Mechty with the first prototype for display) and
in the absence of warriors present, the responsibility for the facility fell to
Technican Brutus who engaged in masterly bidding, limiting the scope to only the
second prototype and not the first production models in the nearby assembly
buildings. (In fact the Coyotes were quite unaware of these valuable and lightly
guarded Adder assets).

Using Gamma configuration, Brutus then led the Coyotes on a chase away from the
Star Adder enclave, almost losing them in the terrain. When finally cornered he
pulled the reactor safeties and ejected, letting the Coyotes win only the
scorched fragments of the chassis. At first gleeful at the 'cowardice' of the
Star Adder Khan, the Coyote warriors were humiliated to learn they'd bid
against and engaged in battle a mere technician, who quickly pointed out he'd
maintained the Way of the Clans by never presuming to fire the weapons at them.

The arrival of Star Adder reinforcements forced the Coyotes to request hegira
rather than face a Trial of Greivance. This debacle did much to weaken Khan
Steele's position in the Coyote Clan Council.

My ilKhan,

It seems we have found what the Ghost Bears got out of their deal with Clan Fire Mandrill that led to the Quasar Omnimech. The Drop Bear -no idea where they came up with that name from- is their offer for the Quicksilver project, and it appears that the bears learnt a great many things from their experience during Operation Revival. Based on the loadout of most of the variants it appears that the bears intend to use this machine against the armies of the Inner Sphere, with only 3 of the 6 variants being well suited to zellbrigen-like duels.

The 'Mech itself is based on the Mad Dog the bears have filled their touman with, although this time it is a Endo-Steel skeleton rather then the cheaper standard structure that the original was built on. The 360XL engines for the machine are based on the engine of the Lancelot, and many of the Lancelots the Mandrills had in their Brian Caches (a not insignificant number I am told) were stripped of their engines, where they were reconditioned and given to the bears in return for the data on the Nova omnimech for their own recently approved design.

Armour wise, the 'Mech wrapped in 8.5 tons of Ferro-fibrous armour. Far from the maximum it could hold but identical to the machine it is based upon that the clan favours so highly. With only the minimum 10 heat sinks fixed to the chassis and no other fixed equipment, 25 tons of podspace remain for its armament, the three ton reduction over the Mad Dog deemed worthwhile for the extra speed gained.

The Prime variant of the machine is very similar to the Mad Dog prime, long range missiles backed up by lasers, except far more tonnage has been dedicated to its missile armament. Four LRM 15 racks allow it to rain death upon all it surveys, and they are supplied with seven tons of ammunition to maintain that barrage through all but the longest engagements. The laser part of the armament had to suffer however, with four Extended Range Medium lasers, two to each arm to finish off enemies after its bountiful ammo load is expended. The base 10 heat sinks are sufficient for either weapon group, but does not cover movement.

The Alpha variant is one that demonstrates the lessons learned during Revival. The LBX class 10 Autocannon with 3 tons of ammunition in the left arm is well suited to dealing with the many vehicles fielded by the armies of the Successor States (or Comstar for that matter, as the Bears learned on Tukayyid) with four ER Medium lasers to support the main gun. Two Small Pulse lasers and two Flamers make this machine able to deal with unarmoured infantry in droves, and the Active Probe prevents the enemy from simply hiding and waiting for it to pass. Four extra double heat sinks allow it to deal with most of its heat issues, with an alphastrike only slowly the machine down slightly.

The Bravo variant is unsuited to fighting in an open field but I would not like to face it in a canyon or city. The 180 metre jump jets allow it to clear all but the largest buildings in a single bound, allowing the mech to close to the optimal range to use its six medium pulse lasers, three to each arm to devastating effect. Twin Streak SRM 4 racks let the bravo fill the holes made by the lasers with explosions. The two extra heat sinks are insufficient for the task of dealing with the machines heat, and care must be taken while jumping to avoid serious overheating.

The Charlie variant is almost the exact opposite of the bravo, with massive long range firepower. The armament starts with an ER PPC in each arm, guns respected throughout all known space. Four ER Medium lasers spread across the torso -and even one in the head- support the main guns, allowing the mech to continue the fight until it has been thoroughly dismembered, much like the Star League-era Black Knight. The Targeting Computer mounted in the left torso gives the mech pinpoint accuracy, but its fifteen heat sinks are nowhere near sufficient to deal with an alphastrike, forcing its pilot to choose carefully how they wish to dispatch their opponent at any given moment.
This variant and the Bravo are clearly designed to compliment each other in a non-zell environment, with the Charlie punching holes for the Bravo to exploit.

The Delta variant is another support machine, but this time it is an urban combat design and spotter. With a 180 metre jump range and full electronic suite including Target Aquisition Gear, it is clearly built for a renewed invasion of the Inner Sphere rather then dueling. An Extended Range Large laser in the left arm is its solitary long range weapon, supported by six ER Mediums; two to each arm with the remaining two in the centre torso. Heat is again an issue with this machine, even with Sixteen double heat sinks it cannot handle an alphastrike, but they do give the pilot to freedom to use all 6 mediums once it closes to range while only overheating if it jumps.

And finally the Echo variant, which some clans will look at with distaste due to the Arrow IV mounted in its left side. Three tons of ammunition give it adequate longevity for most engagements, while the five Medium Pulse Lasers split between its right arm and centre torso give it more then enough firepower to defend itself should the enemy close or its ammunition run out.

Overall my ilKhan, it is clear that the Ghost Bears intend this machine for use in the Inner Sphere, with several machines being ill-suited or downright breaching zellbrigen, whilst being more then capable of assisting each other. Finally I have heard rumours that the agreement between the Bears and the Mandrills goes beyond the trade of technical data for engines, and that they have agreed to freely trade an unknown percentage of their Quicksilver Project machines with each other, should both be approved. Whilst the Mandrills would no doubt love to acquire such a powerful and swift mech as this one, I am unsure as to what use the Bears would put the Quasar to, unless they plan to give them to the better warriors amongst their second-line forces, where speed is often less important.

Overview:
The Hellcat debutted as a test design for Clan Hell's Horses a QuadMech based
OmniMech it was a first for the Horses.

Capabilities:
Faster than the average OmniMech the Hellcat uses its speed and jump jets to
get it into positions that no other Mech can.  It's armour is strong enough to
withhold an ER PPC or Gauss Rifle to any location other than the head and its
rear can resist a medium laser hit, which few other Mechs can boast.

The Hellcat is a Mech destroyer primarily with its main configurations
featuring the largest types of assault autocannon, dozens of long range missile
racks or the longest ranging energy weapons.

The most recent configuration, the Delta, is an oddball configuration which has
recently appeared designed to eliminate as many Inner Sphere infantry as
possible in as short an amount of time as possible.  The short range missiles,
flamers, machine guns and pulse lasers making short work of the PBIs.  The
design is also a heavy scout with an ECM Suite and Active Probe while a single
ER Large Laser keeps lighter opposition at bay.

A reported artillery carrying Hellcat configuration has yet to surface.

Battle History:
The Hell's Horses attempted to prove this Mech with a trial against Clan Wolf
on Tiber.  The Hellcat surprised Clan Wolf on ever front turning the battle in
ways the Wolves did not expect.  Of the three Hellcats deployed by the Hell's
Horses only one survived the battle however between them they destroyed
 seven enemy Mechs and two points of Wolf Elementals.

Deployment:
Clan Hell's Horses wish to deploy this Mech throughout their Touman although
this Mech looks nothing like a Totem design the Clan has already taken great
pride in the design.

Variants:
The Clan Wolf Watch has learned that the Hell's Horses have been working on a
Totem version of the Hellcat which will be exclusive to the Hell's Horses in
violation to the ilKhan's Quicksilver program.  At this stage however the
re-design does not appear to have gotten off the design boards.

an out of canon addendum, I REALLY like the "Jewifacation" that has been going on with Clan Hells Horses circa 3085 (at least in terms of military assets), and the name Kidon is a flagrant attempt to show a seed of that cultural shift.

Really? I was not aware of their shift towards Hebrew trends. Any canon reason given? Thanks for the explanation. I like knowing the reasons behind the name.

Wasn't so much which name was better, just that if it's going to be refused because of the name, its something that could be easily changed to something less Totemy but still Ghost Bearish. If it isn't then I shall stick with the (supposedly) mythological Australian animal.

I do not know really, but if you flip through Record sheets you will see the Ku was renamed Turhan II, there is the Masada variant of the Svandovit, the Parash light mech.  the Prash entry in TRO 3085 explicity mentions this trend

Or you could do something like this . . .

During the early years of the Golden Century, a Ghost Bear scientist (whose name has been purged from history) decided to breed, genetically manipulate, and release into the wilds of Bearclaw examples of EVERY single bear species native to Old Terra. 

This included the Brown Bear (including European, Grizzly, and Kodiak sub-species), the Black Bear (both Asian and American), the Sun Bear, the Giant Panda, the Spectacled Bear, the Sloth Bear, and the Polar Bear.  And, although not actually related to the above Bears at all, the Scientist also selected the Australian Koala Bear for inclusion among the specimens experimented upon and released.

The Koala specimens in particular thrived in the climate of Bearclaw and within two generations the new species had adapted to its environment.  Growing up to three times the size (and mass) of their ancestors, these creatures retained their ancestors arboreal habits . . . but were no longer restricted to eating leaves.  They had become true Omnivores (a trait that Ghost Bear Warriors find amusing, to say the least) and transformed into ambush predators who pounce on prey roaming the forest floor from the tree branches above.

Dubbed as the Bearclaw Drop-Bear (after the Australian myth), these modified Koalas are vicious in nature and use their powerful claws and prominent fangs (as well as their weight) to almost instantly incapacitate and fatally wound prey animals.  They show little fear of man and have been known to attack Elementals clad in Battle Armor!  (Although to little effect, of course.)

Attempts to domestic specimens have failed utterly, with the few Drop Bears in captivity attacking zoological staff at every opportunity.  Indeed, their sheer appetite for causing chaos has caused Ghost Bear civilians on Bearclaw to nickname the species "Stiches" after an ancient animated children's entertainment program.

Overview:
The Thunder Cat, can be traced back to a computer memory core captured by
Clan Hell's Horses more than a century ago from Clan Smoke Jaguar.
Originally called the Snow Leopard by the Jaguar scientists, it never went past
the initial concept pahse due to the Jaguar scientista lacking the fundamental
knowledge to bring a quad design to the prototype stage. The Snow Leopard
was a 65-ton design and would lead to a concept called the Balius, which was
discontinued due the immense infrastructure costs  involved in producing the
390XL power plant.


Developed on Kirin in the same facility that produces the Clan's totem
Battlemech, the Thunder Stallion, the Thunder Cat features a 360 XL that was
developed from the powerplant that powered the Star League-era Cyclops and Ymir
Battlemechs. This gave the Thunder Cat the same basic speed as the aforementioned
Balius project but at a reduced cost. To make it more distinctive, a MASC has
been permanently fixed to the design and allows it to reach speeds of up to
130kph for a short period of time.


Eschewing the modern convention of using ferro-fibrous armor and mounting the
more traditional standard armor, Hell's Horses scientist were able to mount
10.5 tons of armor, while freeing up internal structure space for the mounting
of larger or bulky weapons.


While the Thunder Cat lacks the pod space of other 60-ton designs such as the Mad
Dog or the ancient Lupus, yet it's twenty-one tons of available pod space still
allows it to be very effective on the battlefield.


Variants:
The Prime configuration comes from the cancelled Balius project and features
twin ER Large Lasers backed up by a quartet of medium pulse lasers. Two ER
Small Lasers are mounted to the rear arc to discourage enemy infantry or battle
armor. Four double heat sinks help alleviate heat build up, but not enough to
hinder the use of the MASC system.


The A configuration geatures a Gauss Rifle with three tons of ammunition for
enhanced battlefield performance. A quartet each of ER Medium and Small lasers
are mounted as secondary weapons should the Gauss ever run oout of ammunition.


Next is the fire support, or B configuration, featuring a pair of Artemis
IV-equipped LRM-15 launchers with two tons of ammunition for each launch
system. An ER Large Laser is carried as a long-range secondary weapon with an
ER Small Laser carries for close-in work. To protect the Thunder Cat from
counter-battery fire, an AMS is mounted in the right torso. To discourage
infantry attacks, A-Pods are mounted on all foru legs.


The C congifuration is a general combat variant featuring an ER PPC and an LB
10-X autocannon as the main battery of weapons. These are backed up by a pair
of ER Medim Lasers and anti-infantry flamers.


The D configuration is the only configuration that features jump jets. The six
that are mounted aloww the Sleipnir to maneuver in urban or difficult terain
such as the canyons found on Kirin and Niles. Designed to carry out the heavy
scout mission, the Thunder Cat D carries the full array of electronics necessary
to complete this task. Offensive weaponry is limited to a quintet of pulser
lasers of all sizes and capabilities.


The Duelling, or E, configuration feature the large Ultra-20 autocannon as its
main weapon. Three tons of ammunition is sufficient for duelling, but could be
a detriment on the battlefields of the Inner Sphere. A Streak SRM-4 is mounted
a secondary weapon. Two pairs of ER Medium and Small round out the weapons
array.
